No impressed.......2006-10-28
I bought this dvd because of the list of songs in Product Description. It says: "You'll learn to play the songs:...." but in most of the cases they are not the songs but small riffs. Also this dvd is difficult to navigate and you can not loop the exercises.
I learn some tricks from the dvd but the bottom line is that I was disappointed.
This is a good choice!.......2006-06-16
This course (DVD + Books) may not be the most fun, but it does cover all the bases better than any other SINGLE course out there. To tell you my honest opinion if having fun while learning the guitar is what you want to do, then I would say go with "Guitar Basics" by Bruce Buckingham and work your way up through the Musicians Institue series of courses. The main difference between these series is that Guitar Method starts with reading music and picking out "lame" melodies, where as Guitar Basics starts you out with playing chords and chord progressions. So the decision is really in the hands of where you want to start. Chords or notes?
This and the method books are a great way to start.......2002-06-22
I bought this in order to supplement the method books I am currently studying. Its much more informative than the "Dummies" dvd and you will learn more. My only complaint is when using it to do chapter searches(get to a specific point) it is very confusing. It also would be better with a supplemental book that contains the songs you learn. Still buy it you will be glad you did.I would also recommend Hal Leonards Method books as well. Enjoy!!!!
Useful For Beginners.......2001-04-10
Hal Leonard Guitar Method is a useful product who wants to begin to play acoustic or elecric guitar. It is more enjoyable than a guitar method book.

Not the best, but it's something.......2005-12-22
Now I'm a guitarist, and I have not seen his other films on "How to Play in the Style of" some other artist, but be warned. This video gives you 50 riffs of pink floyds material, mostly from Dark Side and up. All the riffs are only a few measures in length, some a little longer, and some are solos but only small portions of solos, not the whole thing. If you don't have any guitar books on Pink Floyd and want to just know a few of the big riffs, like Money, buy it, it's worth a buy. Also, if you go to the site from which the dvd was made, you can actually print out the guitar tablature to read off of when you play along with them instead of straining your eyes to read the tab on your dvd screen, which is very hard sometimes.
The problem is, his riffs and tabs are not always correct, considering I do have the Official Hal Leonard Pink Floyd Tab Books, and from playing guitar a few years, know that some of his stuff is close, but not exact to the real way of playing it (such as guitar bends that he does not include that David Gilmour uses, the guitarist of Pink Floyd). So like I said, it's something, but not even close to perfect in any way shape or form.
One last note is do not expect to see Pink Floyd at all in this film, this is specifically Curt Mitchell teaching you riffs, that's it!
Description
This is the ultimate course in Jorma Kaukonen's unique and influential blues and country guitar fingerpicking style, filled with invaluable wisdom, advice and techniques for learning pickers at all levels. Jorma gears this material to players who have little knowledge of the fingerpicking basics while skillfully engaging more experienced guitarists as well.
You'll learn five traditional and original songs, each one becoming a springboard for important musical information that will be applicable to any songs you want to play. Jorma teaches at a leisurely pace, taking care to point out all the possible variations that will enable you to make each song your own.
Reviewing the chord positions needed for each song, Jorma slows them down phrase-by-phrase so that almost anyone will be able to play the piece with a little practice. He discusses his alternate bass thumb work, and adds runs, bends, double-stops, bass walk-ups, blues licks, turnarounds, endings and ornamental notes to enhance your fingerpicking and blues arrangements.
In addition to the instructional material, these sessions feature a dynamic "live" performance of each song by Jorma and his touring partner Barry Mitterhoff. They include much-requested tunes "I'll Let You Know Before I Leave," "Trouble in Mind," "Tom Cat Blues," "Genesis" and "Vampire Women."

Your favorite teacher.......2007-03-08
Jorma's approach to teaching fingerstyle guitar is far and away the most effective I've encountered. For starters, he treats you to a spellbinding performance, after which he analyzes the piece and breaks it down into manageable challenges. You will come away from this DVD with some very fun, satisfyingly challenging pieces that you will have added to your repitoire. Who knew back in the mid 70's, when this awe-struck stoner listened to "Genesis", that I'd be playing a very credible facsimile of the piece 30 years later. Jorma is like that favorite teacher you had in school, the unforgettable one who inspired you to higher levels of accomplishment.
One of the best from Homespun.......2005-02-18
I found this dvd and tab to be excellent. Jorma is very clear in his teaching and his playing fits the tab very well. Only my limited talent is holding me back from mastering the material presented. As for the individual who rated it one star, well, the pickers he mentioned are definitely masters, but that's no reason to pan Jorma's dvd. Go figure. I highly recommend this dvd to fingerpickers, especially people just getting into it.
Worth 100 lessons!.......2005-01-14
I hesitated to spend the money on this DVD but I've had lots of fun with it, and it has certainly paid for itself many times over. As someone who is an "advanced beginner" without much natural talent, I had reached a plateau after many guitar lessons. I find this DVD far preferable to taking lessons because of the simple fact that segments of interest can be endlessly studied. The songs are over my head, but with many repetitions I am beginning to get them. Equally importantly, I am learning some of the more subtle points such as how to use vibrato, arpeggio, and dynamic range (varying volume) to make the music sound more nuanced and meaningful. Jorma breaks down the songs into digestible little segments and demonstrates them with an incredibly clean style, all the while throwing in lots of nuggets about technique. A plus for me is being able to learn his beautiful song "Genesis" which I have loved for years. Jorma -- if you happen to read this -- MANY THANKS!!
Good for moderately experienced pickers.......2004-07-07
For those wishing to improve on their picking style and learn the unique riffs of a master--this is for you.
Ignore the whiney quibblings of reviewer Bob Tolstoy below--I checked his review history and he put the same thing on any item that was related to Jorma Kaukonen. Sounds like someone has a personal vendetta.
Jorma is my teacher!.......2004-07-01
This is absolutely the coolest DVD AND the best guitar instruction approach that I have tried, and I have tried a number of them. Jorma [and one of his buddies] play the song, then Jorma goes through step by step and show you how to play the tune. Thanks to DVD technology, you can easily backtrack at tough parts or stop and return later after your fingers recover. Thanks to Jorma, a rich tradition in guitar blues survives today with a significant following. I would not recommend this for beginners, but any 40-somethings or 50-somethings will be glad to know how to play these songs. [The guy who wrote the review below is total sour grapes with a vendetta.]
