The stunning documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony tells the story of protest music in South Africa--but as it does so, it tells the story of the struggle against apartheid itself, for the music and the revolution are inseparable. Through archival footage and interviews with musicians, freedom fighters, and even members of the former government police, Amandla! creates a vivid and powerful portrait of how music was crucial not only to communicating a political message beyond words, but also to the resistance itself--how songs bonded communities, buoyed resistance in the face of bullets and tear gas, and sowed fear in the ruling elite. Part history, part musical exploration, part sheer force of life, Amandla! captures both the sorrow and the triumph of life in South Africa from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A document of great significance.......2006-12-08

Amandla - A Revolution in Four Part Harmony - tells the story of four periods in the history of South Africa, from 1948 until today. From the beginning of legalized apartheid, through the oppression of the sixties, to the uprising of the late seveties and Mandela's release in the early 90's. Each period is presented through its Ngoma - the music that was an integral part of the political struggle. It is clear from watching the film the music was one of the weapons used to "engage the apartheid regime".
There are many emotional moments - moments of despair, moments of joy. People such as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masakela and Abdullah Ibrahim speak candidly about their exile, and their love for their country. The songs, such as "What have we done ?" and the "Toy Toy" song and dance are also the heroes of this film, as well as a collection of freedom fighters who all speak with great eloquence and sincerity. (It should be noted that Jesse Jackson who is listed as one of the "stars" - is actually shown for no more than 5 seconds).
The film is an inspiration to any lover of freedom, in a period where despair may seem a reasonable conclusion. If you love freedom and you love music - get this DVD.

    3 out of 5 stars a very big questionmark?????.......2006-06-25

I really wished I had seen Amandla, but unfortunatly the RegionCode was not good. It would be interesting if you could do something about this problem. The nephew of my friend saw it via his computer (because he has a dvd-writer) and was very enthousiastic about the dvd. So let's say then 8/10

    5 out of 5 stars Eye opening!.......2006-04-11

This movie is eye opening accurate experience into South Africa during Apartied. Th music is simply wonderful and will move you.

Buying it for a class but recommend for anyone interested in history, anthropology, music, sociology, etc.

I'd give it 6 stars but it won't let me

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-09-18

What a work! This is by all means one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. I think this documentary should be shown to high school and college students. Even in this age of arms and ammunitions and warfare, this documentary is evidence of South Africa's persistent non-violent struggle, a struggle that branches from the roots of its own culture, a struggle that unites the country for one common purpose - to enjoy the basic rights of one's own country.
Music can create miracles; music can create wonders. African music has proved this as South African singers and musicians from all over the world join hands to establish their own government for the first time in their own country.
I watched Nelson Mandela dance for the first time, and it was not just a dance; it was a celebration of victory coming from almost a century long game full of upheavels, trials and tribulations, sacrifices and martyrdoms, and separation and suffering, still filled with love, unity and MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars "We Shall Overcome" It Ain't .......2004-11-11

This is an excellent history of the role of music in the anti-aparthied struggle of S/A. Familiar greats like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masakela are covered as well as interesting lost history such as the tale of Vuyisile Mini (who was hanged in 1964 for fight-the power songs such as "Beware Voeword.").

For the most part, these are not "We Shall Overcome" or "Kum by Ya" type of anthems (though that's cool in it's place). This is hardcore, fight-the power, we ain't gonna take it type of music. Sibongile Kumalo's song about the struggle near the end of the film will bring tears to your eyes-first for the beauty of her voice and THEN when you read the translation! The sequences of the Toyi-toyi (the war dance of S/A) are inspirational and revealing, as is this DVD itself.

Moving scenes abound. A picture is shown of a beautiful S/A teenager sitting prettily on a sofa, then the camera pulls back to reveal that she has a machine gun next to her. One young lady, crying at the funeral of a comrade in the midst of the struggle cries, "I wish I were a dog! I wish I were cattle grazing in the grass!" If you can watch scenes like that with a dry eye then something is WRONG with you!

We also have some extra-rare footage of the young Nelson Mandela (in 1961, prior to his imprisonment) telling of his views on the choice of violence or nonviolence. There is also footage of his sentancing in 1964 and his eventual release. The scenes of his dancing in celebration are a sight to behold!

But enough of this. Get it and see and hear the power that music has over the human spirit! I'd give it ten stars!

African Healing Dance, with lead dancer Wyoma and the dancers and drummers of the Damballa dance troupe, is a step-by-step dance course on healing traditions and spiritual movements that are special to the African dance heritage. An African proverb teaches, "If you can talk, you can sing, and if you can walk, you can dance." Thus African Healing Dance is suited for beginning to advanced dancers, students of dance, instructors, and choreographers studying and/or performing African dance. The instructional video and included manual provide an effective guide for a dance or exercise program at home or in a workshop setting. Director of the Damballa dance troupe as well as head dancer, Wyoma begins with a simple warm-up, including breathing techniques; body articulation movements for the hips, chest, shoulders, and feet; and stretching. She then artistically integrates the teaching of six traditional African dances with the passion and joy of connecting dance movements that have the spirit and energy of nature and the elements (water, wind, fire, and earth) and animals such as the snake, elephant, and bird. A final portion of the 70-minute video is called "The Healing Journey," in which Wyoma encourages personal exploration of inner rhythms and feelings through improvisational movement. As one watches this video, it is difficult not to feel the pulse of the drumbeat and the spiritual strength of Wyoma and her celebration of life through dance. --Christine Aiken

5 out of 5 stars Awesome teaching, never boring, great isolations & movements similar to Qi Gong & Kundalini yoga to increase energy.......2007-04-26

Everyone has wrote great reviews already. I was shy at first, but Wyoma's generous infectious spirit won me over within 10 min when she was teaching the basic movements with a drummer behind her. When giving it a try, I felt how good my body loved the fluidity of the movement & the simplicity of them & there was no perfect way to move & to let go. Those who are more "Type A" personality & don't know how to let go into a dance would benefit greatly & learn to let go with this.
She teaches alone inside at first for about 20 min, she gives you the origin of the dance, what the movements mean in history while teaching with simple, perfect timing cues so you never feel lost.
Outside with a beautiful mountain/hillside background, there are more percussionists & 1 female & 2 male dancers. There is a great warmup that really gets all the major joints & feels wonderful. The dance itself feels like over an hour of great stretching & increasing the fluid in your joints.
A few of the dances look almost exactly like Qi Gong or Kundalini movement to increase your constitutional energy and increase energy balance for your mind & body. It's interesting that some of these movements for healing have traveled so far thousands of years ago & people instinctively knew which ones were the most beneficial.

You can see the intro trailer at their distributor soundstrue com & you can see snippets of throughout the dvd at collagevideo com

Israel is a magnificent arranger and producer. His music has always been fantastic. However, there seems to be problems with his video shoots. His last one,Going to another level, he almost got me dizzy with the camera shots going all over the place. This one, the video and audio doesn't always line up. Besides that, it's a cool dvd. Don't expect anything different (in terms of music)from the cd though, it's about the same thing

    Description

This multitalented group has exploded onto the world music scene, wowing audiences with its virtuosity and passion. Drawn primarily from the churches and communities of South Africa's most famous township, the choir mixes earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, drumming, dancing, and irrepressible charisma for an experience that lifts the soul and stuns the senses.

Filmed live in concert on their 2005 Australian tour, they sing a blend of traditional gospel and contemporary standards in English as well as some of the 10 other official languages of South Africa. Constantly in motion and dressed in vibrantly colored robes and textiles, with one superb soloist after another taking the lead, they offer up such highlights as "Asimbonanga," Jonny Clegg's tribute to Nelson Mandela; Peter Gabriel's "Biko"; "Mbube," the South African song that became "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"; the traditional ballad "I Bid You Goodnight"; Bob Marley's classic "One Love"; and Nkosi Sikelel'iAfrika, the South African National Anthem.

This was a huge surprise seeing early Mohotlla Queens and Sipho and Johnny (Clegg) in their youthful exhuberance. This is a must for anyone who really loves and wants to understand the uniqueness of South African Music. Follow this with Amandla, perhaps.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary, the soundtrack is even better!.......2001-10-11

This is an excellent documentary not only of the South African music scene, but also about life in Black S/A during the aparthied days while Mandela had yet to be freed. We enjoy the entertaining music along with seeing the horrible conditions that produce this genre. However, if you like this, there is an excellent soundtrack of this documentary that features some music that did not appear in the film that was on a CD from Shanachie records. Y'all need to BRING THAT BACK in print and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Documentary on South Africa.......2001-05-15

This is a well-known classic music documentary on South Africa. A point of reference as a report and as one of the first explorations of this rich scene. It is mentioned on the 'Graceland' album cover notes as the place where Paul Simon first saw Ladysmith! Beautifully produced, edited and shot. Pleasurable!

With the earthy, yet otherworldly Ilé Aiyé (The House of Life), David Byrne (True Stories) explores the spirit cult of Candomblé. Based in the Bahia region of Brazil, the African-originated religion permeates all aspects of the culture. Byrne incorporates music, dance, interviews, and clips from old black-and-white Brazilian movies into his documentary. Narration is kept to a minimum and the visuals do most of the talking--along with the rhythmic, trance-inducing songs, accompanied by translations of their evocative lyrics. As befits a former art student--and Talking Head--Byrne does get a little "arty" at times, as when he places screens within screens (much like Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book). Fortunately, the effect isn't as distracting as it sounds and is only used sporadically. Ilé Aiyé is a must for fans of Byrne's groundbreaking Brazil Classics, Vol. 1 compilation, on which Tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso sings the lovely number of the same name. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

ILÉ AIYÉ is David Byrne's breathtaking 1989 documentary on Candomblé, the African-influenced spirit cult of the Bahia region of Brazil.

ILÉ AIYÉ explores the ways in which Candomblé has influenced the daily life and culture of the people of Brazil in music, art, religion, theater, food, dance, poetry and more. ILÉ AIYÉ uses experimental film techniques, music, and cultural observation to express the life and rituals of Candomblé and the symbolic manifestation of the Orishás, the deities which represent the wide range of natural and spiritual forces. The rhythms of the sacred drums and bells, a dance of spiritual ecstasy, offerings and sacrifices, divination and the visitation of the Orishás through trance are all part of the color and life of Candomblé.

Complemented by the original score from David Byrne recorded with Bahian musicians, the music in ILÉ AIYÉ includes ritual music recorded during ceremonies as well as popular Brazilian songs influenced by Candomblé.

5 out of 5 stars Let yourself be possessed by the rhythm.......2004-10-30

I remember vaguely seeing this film on PBS back in the mid to late '80s when it first came out. Seeing it now, I obviously didn't remember much. This is a great, great documentary. You will learn about the religion of candomble, which is a blend of catholicism and African rituals in Bahia, Brazil. This was a big influence for David Byrne during the "Rei Momo" period(and probably continues to be). The rhythms and dances these people do are nothing short of the DNA of rock and roll. You will also learn more about what makes David Byrne tick. As an example, it suddenly makes perfect sense why he would choose Whitney Houston's "I just wanna dance with somebody" as a cover song in concert. Finally, I dare say, you'll learn about life.

Though still relatively unknown in America, South African musician Johnny Clegg has been a significant presence in Europe and Africa for several decades--and deservedly so, as the comprehensive, entertaining Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Jaluka: Live! and More... makes clear. Clegg was born in England but has lived in Africa since infancy, and his commingling of those two cultures began in earnest in the '70s, when he formed Juluka, whose interracial lineup (Clegg himself is white) and politically charged songs made for a heady, controversial brew at a time when apartheid was still the rule. Those days are recalled here via concert footage and early videos (including "Scatterlings of Africa," probably their best-known tune), but much of the DVD is devoted to live and video footage of Savuka, Clegg's next band (which included newcomers as well as Juluka veterans), which he formed in '86 and is still going strong. Many songs are devoted to Africa's various plights, but lyrical content notwithstanding, this music--with its nimble bass lines, West African guitar styles (played by Clegg himself; he's also a superb dancer), and combination of infectious Western pop melodies and traditional Zulu sounds--is downright irresistible. It wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to call Clegg the "African Elvis," a musician who adapted black music and made it available to a broad commercial audience. Best of all, Live! and More... will make you smile. --Sam Graham

    Description

Artist Johnny Clegg merged the white, English-speaking culture with the Black, African culture of South Africa to form South Africa's first interracial band Juluka. In the days of apartheid, Juluka encountered their share of problems, including the banning of their first album by the South African government. After this group disbanded in the mid-80's, Clegg formed another band, Savuka, which blended European pop with African music. Savuka toured North America, opening for Steve Winwood and George Michael, as well as garnering a Grammy nomination in the Best World Music Category.

    5 out of 5 stars A portal to Africa.......2006-06-01

I lived in Africa from 1983 through 1999. I despair sometimes of showing Africa to someone who has never been there, but with this DVD I think I have finally found a portal to Africa for many people who think only of game parks and famines. Buy this DVD and ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars Ok - now for a review from a South African who grew up with zulu music!.......2006-04-14

Only 4 stars bc. of the imperfect audio/video production. Nevertheless, an awesome dvd - esp. the live Paris concert. What is it about the French that make them so appreciative of all African music?!

Johnny Clegg is a Zulu soul in an Englishman's body - plain and simple. This dvd captures the sincerity, modesty, compassion and inspirational energy of this icon of trans-apartheid fusion. When white folk were talking and complaining about the injustices of apartheid, Clegg was learning to speak Zulu, make music and dance the soul of the Zulu people. His music captures the triumph of joy over suffering that characterizes this people - the ability to see the spark of sunshine in the greyest of days.

The bonus videos have been criticized for being amateurish. I personally think they are wonderful, but then I am a person who can't stand the over-produced slick MTV videos you see these days. The Nelson Mandela moment wil touch your soul.

    5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!!.......2005-09-20

If you are new to the Johnny Clegg experience, this is the next best thing to actually seeing the magic of the man and his music in person! The DVD includes a good many of his hits, plus some outstanding dancing. Each band member oozes personality, you will feel like you know each one personally at the end of the DVD. There is an outstanding synchronization and tightness to this band that shows what can happen when you put the right musicians and music together. I cannot even begin to put words together to say how wonderful this DVD is..this is a "must have" that no Clegg fan should pass up.

4 out of 5 stars Really good if it works on your DVD player.......2005-08-14

Johnny Clegg & Savuka are an amazing band with an amazing history. Their songs are actively political without being obnoxious and preachy, and unlike a lot of political groups they can deftly shift content from politics to romance (sometimes within the same song-"Woman be my country 'til my country can be mine"). The band's one studio weakness is that they sometimes (in this reviewer's opinion) get a bit too chirpy and bubblegummy. That is not a problem on this DVD, because live, these songs are explosive and energetic.

With the full band plus a couple of backing musicians, by the looks of it, the live show in Paris that is the centerpiece of this DVD is a fantastic spectacle. While it's only 13 songs, they are all masterfully executed. The band is technically flawless and full of life onstage, with terrific dance steps to go along with the music, and the band's brilliant fusion of Western pop and African musical traditions has never sounded better. The show climaxes with a stirring rendition of "Asimbonanga" and a charged, fist-pumping rendition of "One (Hu)Man One Vote."

This concert predates "Heat Dust and Dreams" so none of that album's songs are in the set list (that's OK, because "Cruel Crazy Beautiful World" was their best album anyway). The DVD however, is somewhat more recent, so as a side treat this thing is loaded with a number of music videos, most from "Heat Dust and Dreams." (If you're like me, you won't really watch much of these, because the live material is much more engaging.) There are also a number of bonus live gems, such as a wonderfully grainy recording of Clegg's old band Juluka doing an electrictrifying drum-and-dance routine before a packed soccer stadium in the late '70s, and another live take of "Asimbonanga" (this time from the late 1990s) featuring and appearance by none other than the song's subject himself-Nelson Mandela.

My only complaint is that the two copies of this DVD I have encountered have both had skipping problems on certain DVD players. Hopefully this won't happen to you, and this content is worth the risk.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Clegg - the greatest musician ever. Period........2005-02-03

Johnny has touched my life in so many ways. I use his music to inspire me, to inspire others, to help me get through things - from life to marathons and beyond. I aim one day to meet the great man and watch him live in concert. He is truly brilliant in everything he does - from his lyrics, to his rhythm, to dance, to his beats, his energy, and just the feeling that he conveys through his music so fluidly and so powerfully. To me, he is the epitome of what every musician should be. Johnny Clegg is music. He is energy. He is so much, and he is a South African. Ngibonga kakhulu Johnny!

Explosive performances by Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, Santana, the Staple Singers, and others power Soul to Soul, the filmed documentary of a 1971 concert by American artists in Accra, Ghana. There's some great music here, with versions of "Land of 1000 Dances" (Pickett), "When Will We Be Paid" (the Staples), and "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" (jazzmen Les McCann and Eddie Harris, who also feature the amazing African musician Amoah Azangeo) that are as good or better than anything found on other concert films from the period, including Wattstax and Woodstock. But witnessing this predominantly black group of Americans as they respond to being in Africa for the first time is fascinating and moving as well (check out the uncontained emotion of Ike Turner, just one of the nine folks who supplied voice-over commentary for the DVD, to see just how profound an experience it was), to say nothing of the sometimes bemused, often ecstatic response of the African audience. 5.1 surround notwithstanding, the sound can be a little dodgy, but the remastered, restored film, which includes plenty of non-concert documentary footage (including a trip to a seaside "castle" from which slaves were shipped across the Atlantic) looks good, and what's on the film looks first rate. --Sam Graham

    Description

On March 6, 1971, some of the greatest artists in popular music history traveled from the United States to Ghana, West Africa, to take part in a 14-hour musical celebration, Soul To Soul. Over 100,000 enthusiastic locals gathered for this unique cultural exchange between two continents. This award-winning film combines classic concert performances with scenes documenting the artists getting in touch with their roots as they return to the cultural motherland. SOUL TO SOUL chronicles this historic event and is considered by many to be one of the greatest music films of all time. Now available for the first time on DVD, this 2-disc set features the 95-minute, full-length feature film, newly remastered and restored from the original 35mm negative by the Grammy Foundation. The second disc features a remastered and expanded original soundtrack (also making its debut on CD), including performances not featured in the film.

5 out of 5 stars It was great -but no Roberta Flack.......2007-05-16

I didnt see Roberta Flack on this video. It is a misleading item. The headliner is Tina Turner or Wilson Pickett. Nevertheless is is a great video of an old music festival in africa.

5 out of 5 stars No hype, truly a legendary concert film.......2004-12-29

I still have the soundtrack LP I purchased more than 30 years ago. I did not see the original film. The DVD release is an absolute joy. It is as much an educational documentary as it is a profound musical experience. Yes, I am disappointed the Roberta Flack performances were deleted, but the balance of what is provided is thoroughly satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars For IKE & TINA TURNER fans.......2004-11-11

I have to say this was a great show to watch; The intro was a great attention getter. I mean, if you're an Ike & Tina fan, like I am, then you got to get this video/DVD. Watching Tina & the Ikettes dancing from this 1971 film makes it clear to me where a lot of today's artisit get the desire to dance in front audiences, at least got it indirectly. Hip shaken and everything--did TV even show those kind of moves back then? Well with the exception of James Brown of course. And as most Ike & Tina fans know, there isn't that much legit footage of their performances. So this is worth getting for Ike & Tina viewing only. I was kind of disappointed that Santana wasn't shown much; although their performance of Black Magic Women was great. THe guiter sounds and intensity, it was great. I liked watching the energy of the Voices of East Harlem. I never even heard of them before watching the DVD. The young singer on that DVD was like another MIchael Jackson of that day. This kid was even doing the moon walk way before Michael. For the DVD, the commetary was good. You get to hear Ike Turner speaking w/ Les McCann about where his ideas fit in for his reveue, interesting. One thing to note, is that the Guanians (?) new who Wilson Pickett was; it's like they only came to see him, and no one else. The last performance of the film shows Picket singing land Of 1000 dances--wow! I mean the audiance went crazy. Watching them dance gets you energized. They start flying over the stage--mosh pit, I think. It's like everything done today by muscians really isn't something just invented, it's been around for years. You can also tell by the African dancers. Man, they really had it--I mean it's just soul, and they show it.

5 out of 5 stars Roberta Flack denied her permission to be included!.......2004-10-26

Sadly, Roberta Flack denied permission to the filmmakers to include her or her wonderful music in this dvd release. A real loss for all of us. However, the film is still a classic and worthy of inclusion in all serious film and music libraries.

    2 out of 5 stars Incomplete!.......2004-10-19

Roberta Flack is conspicuously missing from both the DVD
and CD releases. I have the original LP soundtrack, and
saw the original film, both of which included her great
performances. I don't know if this was her decision or the
filmmakers, but you cannot call this the ORIGINAL film.

5 out of 5 stars The essential knowledge from the master.......2007-03-15

At the time of the production of this instructional Olatunji had over 50 years of teaching experience and no real peer, especially when he combines information about technique with the deeper cultural basis for the music. So not only do you get a lesson from a master drummer you get the lesson from a master teacher. Very fundamental techniques for obtaining the proper sounds are covered and the instruction progresses to examples of advanced ensemble playing. The fundamentals are stressed, and you are provided with the examples of Olatunji's own demonstrations along with two of his long-time Drums of Passion members, Sikiru Adepoju and Sanga Francis. Recording the sounds of a drum is always problematic but the sound quality here is very good so the distinctive differences in the basic sounds of the drum come across with good accuracy for the student to hear. As simple as a hand drum may seem the African music and rhythms taught by Olatunji have a sophistication but he conveys it all without making it over complicated. The pace of the instruction allows for a good level of concentration. With any recorded musical instruction one is mostly going to get a grounding and a concentration of main points to follow, this recording does that very well. Since Olatunji has passed on this is the closest you will get to having a personal lesson from him now. You can't help feeling like you want more time as his student.

    3 out of 5 stars african drumming.......2006-11-17

This DVD presents authentic African drumming from a master and as such is invaluable. I thought it is aimed more at beginners but there are plenty of tips for more advanced players. Baba is thorough in his explanations and demonstrations of basic strokes although a little slow moving. All lessons are demonstrated by excellent performances with his trio 'drums of passion' and this is what makes this a valuable acquisition although I wish more of the material was aimed towards advanced players and the performances were a bit longer. An excellent DVD for beginners.

After Ladysmith Black Mambazo gained initial fame with American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's 1985 Graceland album, the group achieved tremendous popularity in the international music scene. This 1999 production begins with a fascinating interview with the group's leader and songwriter, Joseph Shabalala. The articulate Shabalala shares the origins of the group's name, his personal calling, and his dream to share South Africa's musical canon with the world while conveying an immense sense of power and vision not often found in today's music. The live concert performance at London's Royal Albert Hall is a "best of" performance that showcases the group's wonderful a cappella harmonies and the genius of Shabalala's writing. The songs (in both English and Zulu) celebrate universal themes, like the misunderstandings between the younger and older generations in "Sisesiqhingini" (Stupid Stupid Stupid). "Phansi Emigodini" (Deep down in the mines) is especially masterful in its use of repetitive rhythms and vocal sound effects to re-create the sounds of picks and hammers at work in the mines. These potent effects create a hauntingly realistic atmosphere and add a deeper, universal level of meaning to the Zulu lyrics. Notable too is the unique "tiptoe dancing" that accompanies many of the songs. This expressive style of dance focuses primarily on the feet, but at times encompasses the entire body and lends a rich, visual aspect to Ladysmith Black Mambazo's powerful music. Following the encore (Graceland's "Homeless") is a short segment featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo on location in the parks and streets of Los Angeles. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Next best thing if you can't see them live.......2005-10-04

Saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo some years ago live and enjoyed their talents. Its nice to hear/see them and to get some extra info thats on the DVD as well.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun.......2003-02-23

I used to be in a choir. Whenever the director wanted us to do more than just sing the notes, she would mention Ladysmith Black Mambazo, like these guys knew how to do what she wanted, and anyone who bought a CD at the time could hear the luscious sound of a large group simultaneously thinking the same thing on an emotional level that would strike home in people's souls. After Paul Simon used them on his "Graceland" album, it wasn't hard to hear what they sounded like. Most people might have a language problem on "Phansi Emigodini (Deep down in the mines)." Not being able to identify the meaning of words in an African language can be an obstacle to paying attention, but they sign what they are doing with their hands and feet. The DVD jacket calls it "tiptoe dancing," but it is so much more. The whole group is adept at waving their hands and feet around in the air, and the more you watch them, the more fun they let themselves have. Americans have gotten used to a lot of individual star performers, but these guys cavort like letting their souls loose is the most contagious behavior on the planet. Our kids must be learning stuff like this in school. It is hard to understand them, but do they care?

5 out of 5 stars Soul touching harmonies.......2001-03-05

I have not purchased this DVD yet but I did see these blokes in a stage production called "The Song of Jacob Zulu" some years ago in Perth Western Australia and they as well as the story had a very big impact on my soul.
