Amandla! tells the story of black South African freedom music and the central role it played against apartheid. The first film to specifically consider the music that sustained a galvanized black South Africans for more than 40 years, Amandla!'s focus is on the struggle's spiritual dimension, as articulated and embodied in song. Named for the Xhosa word for "power", Amandla! lives up to its title, telling an uplifting story of human courage, resolve and triumph.Amazon.com
The stunning documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony tells the story of protest music in South Africa--but as it does so, it tells the story of the struggle against apartheid itself, for the music and the revolution are inseparable. Through archival footage and interviews with musicians, freedom fighters, and even members of the former government police, Amandla! creates a vivid and powerful portrait of how music was crucial not only to communicating a political message beyond words, but also to the resistance itself--how songs bonded communities, buoyed resistance in the face of bullets and tear gas, and sowed fear in the ruling elite. Part history, part musical exploration, part sheer force of life, Amandla! captures both the sorrow and the triumph of life in South Africa from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power. --Bret FetzerCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com
African Healing Dance, with lead dancer Wyoma and the dancers and drummers of the Damballa dance troupe, is a step-by-step dance course on healing traditions and spiritual movements that are special to the African dance heritage. An African proverb teaches, "If you can talk, you can sing, and if you can walk, you can dance." Thus African Healing Dance is suited for beginning to advanced dancers, students of dance, instructors, and choreographers studying and/or performing African dance. The instructional video and included manual provide an effective guide for a dance or exercise program at home or in a workshop setting. Director of the Damballa dance troupe as well as head dancer, Wyoma begins with a simple warm-up, including breathing techniques; body articulation movements for the hips, chest, shoulders, and feet; and stretching. She then artistically integrates the teaching of six traditional African dances with the passion and joy of connecting dance movements that have the spirit and energy of nature and the elements (water, wind, fire, and earth) and animals such as the snake, elephant, and bird. A final portion of the 70-minute video is called "The Healing Journey," in which Wyoma encourages personal exploration of inner rhythms and feelings through improvisational movement. As one watches this video, it is difficult not to feel the pulse of the drumbeat and the spiritual strength of Wyoma and her celebration of life through dance. --Christine AikenCustomer Reviews:

Ile Aiye (The House of Life) - A Film by David Byrne

With the earthy, yet otherworldly Ilé Aiyé (The House of Life), David Byrne (True Stories) explores the spirit cult of Candomblé. Based in the Bahia region of Brazil, the African-originated religion permeates all aspects of the culture. Byrne incorporates music, dance, interviews, and clips from old black-and-white Brazilian movies into his documentary. Narration is kept to a minimum and the visuals do most of the talking--along with the rhythmic, trance-inducing songs, accompanied by translations of their evocative lyrics. As befits a former art student--and Talking Head--Byrne does get a little "arty" at times, as when he places screens within screens (much like Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book). Fortunately, the effect isn't as distracting as it sounds and is only used sporadically. Ilé Aiyé is a must for fans of Byrne's groundbreaking Brazil Classics, Vol. 1 compilation, on which Tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso sings the lovely number of the same name. --Kathleen C. FennessyDescription
ILÉ AIYÉ is David Byrne's breathtaking 1989 documentary on Candomblé, the African-influenced spirit cult of the Bahia region of Brazil.ILÉ AIYÉ explores the ways in which Candomblé has influenced the daily life and culture of the people of Brazil in music, art, religion, theater, food, dance, poetry and more. ILÉ AIYÉ uses experimental film techniques, music, and cultural observation to express the life and rituals of Candomblé and the symbolic manifestation of the Orishás, the deities which represent the wide range of natural and spiritual forces. The rhythms of the sacred drums and bells, a dance of spiritual ecstasy, offerings and sacrifices, divination and the visitation of the Orishás through trance are all part of the color and life of Candomblé.
Complemented by the original score from David Byrne recorded with Bahian musicians, the music in ILÉ AIYÉ includes ritual music recorded during ceremonies as well as popular Brazilian songs influenced by Candomblé.

Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Juluka - Live! and More...
Starring: Johnny Clegg & Savuka , and Juluka Manufacturer: Eagle Vision USA ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items:
ASIN: B0002CTSYA Release Date: 2004-07-27 |

Though still relatively unknown in America, South African musician Johnny Clegg has been a significant presence in Europe and Africa for several decades--and deservedly so, as the comprehensive, entertaining Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Jaluka: Live! and More... makes clear. Clegg was born in England but has lived in Africa since infancy, and his commingling of those two cultures began in earnest in the '70s, when he formed Juluka, whose interracial lineup (Clegg himself is white) and politically charged songs made for a heady, controversial brew at a time when apartheid was still the rule. Those days are recalled here via concert footage and early videos (including "Scatterlings of Africa," probably their best-known tune), but much of the DVD is devoted to live and video footage of Savuka, Clegg's next band (which included newcomers as well as Juluka veterans), which he formed in '86 and is still going strong. Many songs are devoted to Africa's various plights, but lyrical content notwithstanding, this music--with its nimble bass lines, West African guitar styles (played by Clegg himself; he's also a superb dancer), and combination of infectious Western pop melodies and traditional Zulu sounds--is downright irresistible. It wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to call Clegg the "African Elvis," a musician who adapted black music and made it available to a broad commercial audience. Best of all, Live! and More... will make you smile. --Sam GrahamDescription
Artist Johnny Clegg merged the white, English-speaking culture with the Black, African culture of South Africa to form South Africa's first interracial band Juluka. In the days of apartheid, Juluka encountered their share of problems, including the banning of their first album by the South African government. After this group disbanded in the mid-80's, Clegg formed another band, Savuka, which blended European pop with African music. Savuka toured North America, opening for Steve Winwood and George Michael, as well as garnering a Grammy nomination in the Best World Music Category.Track Listing:

Explosive performances by Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, Santana, the Staple Singers, and others power Soul to Soul, the filmed documentary of a 1971 concert by American artists in Accra, Ghana. There's some great music here, with versions of "Land of 1000 Dances" (Pickett), "When Will We Be Paid" (the Staples), and "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" (jazzmen Les McCann and Eddie Harris, who also feature the amazing African musician Amoah Azangeo) that are as good or better than anything found on other concert films from the period, including Wattstax and Woodstock. But witnessing this predominantly black group of Americans as they respond to being in Africa for the first time is fascinating and moving as well (check out the uncontained emotion of Ike Turner, just one of the nine folks who supplied voice-over commentary for the DVD, to see just how profound an experience it was), to say nothing of the sometimes bemused, often ecstatic response of the African audience. 5.1 surround notwithstanding, the sound can be a little dodgy, but the remastered, restored film, which includes plenty of non-concert documentary footage (including a trip to a seaside "castle" from which slaves were shipped across the Atlantic) looks good, and what's on the film looks first rate. --Sam GrahamDescription
On March 6, 1971, some of the greatest artists in popular music history traveled from the United States to Ghana, West Africa, to take part in a 14-hour musical celebration, Soul To Soul. Over 100,000 enthusiastic locals gathered for this unique cultural exchange between two continents. This award-winning film combines classic concert performances with scenes documenting the artists getting in touch with their roots as they return to the cultural motherland. SOUL TO SOUL chronicles this historic event and is considered by many to be one of the greatest music films of all time. Now available for the first time on DVD, this 2-disc set features the 95-minute, full-length feature film, newly remastered and restored from the original 35mm negative by the Grammy Foundation. The second disc features a remastered and expanded original soundtrack (also making its debut on CD), including performances not featured in the film.Customer Reviews:

Ladysmith Black Mambazo - In Harmony: Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Starring: Ladysmith Black Mambazo Manufacturer: SHANACHIE ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items:
ASIN: B00001ZWB5 Release Date: 1999-10-19 |

After Ladysmith Black Mambazo gained initial fame with American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's 1985 Graceland album, the group achieved tremendous popularity in the international music scene. This 1999 production begins with a fascinating interview with the group's leader and songwriter, Joseph Shabalala. The articulate Shabalala shares the origins of the group's name, his personal calling, and his dream to share South Africa's musical canon with the world while conveying an immense sense of power and vision not often found in today's music. The live concert performance at London's Royal Albert Hall is a "best of" performance that showcases the group's wonderful a cappella harmonies and the genius of Shabalala's writing. The songs (in both English and Zulu) celebrate universal themes, like the misunderstandings between the younger and older generations in "Sisesiqhingini" (Stupid Stupid Stupid). "Phansi Emigodini" (Deep down in the mines) is especially masterful in its use of repetitive rhythms and vocal sound effects to re-create the sounds of picks and hammers at work in the mines. These potent effects create a hauntingly realistic atmosphere and add a deeper, universal level of meaning to the Zulu lyrics. Notable too is the unique "tiptoe dancing" that accompanies many of the songs. This expressive style of dance focuses primarily on the feet, but at times encompasses the entire body and lends a rich, visual aspect to Ladysmith Black Mambazo's powerful music. Following the encore (Graceland's "Homeless") is a short segment featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo on location in the parks and streets of Los Angeles. --Tami HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
