Baby Einstein - Meet the Orchestra - First Instruments

Product Description
By 12 months, little ones can clearly identify specific sounds, and musical notes. They are also beginning to match different sounds with the objects that make them. Meet The Orchestra, First Instruments introduces your little one to musical instruments that make up an orchestra and the different sounds that they make. Entertain them with fun puppet shows, inspire them with captivating real-world images and beautiful classical music by Beethoven, Brahms, Joplin, Haydn, Mozart and Strauss lets them discover their favorite instrument.Age: 12 months +Amazon.com
Adults may think it's too early to teach a baby the difference between a trumpet and a bugle, but Baby Einstein: Meet the Orchestra--First Instruments entertains children with its next music installment. Relying on its tried-and-true formula of bright colors, quick-paced format, and almost no dialogue (except to repeat names and identify groups by section: brass, woodwinds, strings, and so forth), First Instruments flashes the instrument and its name on the screen, demonstrates how it sounds, and shows animated characters, puppets, babies, youth, and grown-ups all performing on (and enjoying) it. It then combines instruments for a few classical numbers. The jazzy rendition of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" is questionable (it would be nicer to teach kids appreciation for the real thing). Bonus features include instrument flash cards, several puppet shows, a featurette teaching more about music, and additional orchestral numbers. A nice diversion for your little maestro-to-be. Ages 1 year and up.--Ellen A. KimCustomer Reviews:

Tag along for Elmo's musical adventure with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and prepare to strike an unlikely pose, with one foot planted in the friendliest, furriest neighborhood anybody knows and the other in a sophisticated, sonically souped-up concert arena--Boston's Symphony Hall. The video unites the two seemingly mismatched worlds seamlessly, pulling off its unstated but pretty obvious goal, which is to siphon off the classical genre's outermost layer of stuffiness to make it more accessible to little kids, with Sesame-style punch and simplicity. Baby Bear leads viewers into Peter's forest by way of his ticket to see the Boston Pops Orchestra. Backstage he meets conductor Keith Lockhart, who serves as tour guide for a thorough but breezy showcase of various instruments, allowing the lisping little bear to get a grip on which sound portrays which character. Happy-go-lucky Peter, played by a peasant-costumed Elmo, is center stage during violin solos; the scary-sounding French horn signals the approach of the wolf--normally a ferocious fellow, but in this case a harmless furry purple guy. These days, with the gospel about the benefits of music education spreading at fever pitch, this 45-minute gem could be promoted as a way to get preschoolers in on the action. Beyond that, it's a charming chucklefest that's as effective as any intro you'll find to the classic tale. Elmo tickles audiences of all ages as Peter, and Big Bird, with help from the bassoon, spreads his wings in the role of the brave but foolhardy boy's grandfather. --Tammy La GorceDescription

The bad boy of classical music at mid-century, Pierre Boulez made an infamous comment about burning down all the opera houses that was incendiary, to say the least, but it pointed to the fact that Boulez needed to burn bridges to pave the way for a new kind of music. That he became friends with, and later championed the music of, Igor Stravinsky, is odd if only because Stravinsky went through so many stylistic changes--from seductive exoticism to neo-baroque to 12-tone serialism--that Boulez probably didn't know what to make of the elder statesman. But Boulez's maturation as both composer and conductor allowed him to view Stravinsky as a kindred soul restlessly searching for new forms of expression. These 1993 performances of two great Stravinsky works from before and after World War I--that still-bludgeoning masterpiece of rhythm and dance, The Rite of Spring (1913), and a lovely, brief work of subtle coloration, Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1920)--not only give us two sides of Stravinsky but also demonstrate Boulez's innate understanding of such a wide musical palette. The London Philharmonic performs splendidly, and in an added bonus interview, Boulez discusses the importance and influence of The Rite of Spring, not only on him as a musician but on 20th century music as a whole. --Kevin Filipski
Description
Pierre Boulez conducts Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps" (The Rites of Spring), which was originally commissioned by Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes. The magnificent score premiered in Paris in 1913. The rhythmic complexities of "Sacre" are notorious, but in the hands of a master of modern music and one of the world's top orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the elemental barbarism of the music is thrilling. This program also includes "Symphonies D'Instrument A Vent" and a short interview with Pierre Boulez.Customer Reviews:

A nice DVD presentation but..........2001-08-05
His interpretation here is accurate but too sedate for me. It is even more gentlemanly than his renderings of the early 1970s. Le Sacre is raw and primitive and screams out for passion which Boulez fails to lend it.
It might sound good the first time you hear it; the orchestra is up to scratch; the climaxes are nicely loud and it moves on in its merry, noisy way. There are worse interpretations. But as recorded performances go, it is not one that bears repeated audition.
He does much better with the Symphonies of Wind Instruments, a more formal neo-classical work that comes across better for the conductor not attempting to get passionate about it.
It is possible that at times in their lives, Boulez and Stravinsky might have coincided in their musical objectives but there really is nothing akin about Boulez at any time and the Stravinsky who wrote this work. If the studio insisted on a Boulez recording, they might have chosen his Varese interpretations - utterly competent - and left Le Sacre du Printemps to a more passionate interpreter.

If you like Roberto's music, this DVD is gold with 20 tracks. However, make sure you have a nice sound system to amplify the sound, as the sound coming from the DVD is pretty weak in comparison to others.

Berlioz's Te Deum remains one of the great, underplayed masterpieces of the romantic era. A majestic, outsized juxtaposition of human and divine, this mammoth piece for orchestra, organ, solo tenor, and three choruses has defeated many of the forces that have essayed it. But Claudio Abbado has always been one to rise to a challenge, and here he leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra through a marvelous reading of the score. From the opening call-and-response of organ and orchestra tossing chords at one another to the thrilling massed conclusion, Abbado and his superb singers and musicians expertly capture Berlioz's every nuance. The stunning fortes are never allowed to overwhelm the quieter moments, so the piece becomes less a disjointed series of climaxes than an integrated whole. Just listen to the hair-raising crescendos of Tibi Omnes, or the white-hot excitement of the martial Judex Crederis, for a lesson in how a profound understanding of the music's quiet moments makes the eventual release all the more powerful. Only soloist José Carreras disappoints, though even his weak vocalizing is powerfully emotive. Rodney Greenberg's direction of this concert film is as lucid and unobtrusively varied as Abbado's conducting, judiciously picking out the different forces without dwelling anywhere so long so as to lose the bigger picture. The disc is filled out with an appropriately lyrical reading of Wagner's Die Meistersinger overture. The two pieces are separately indexed, which proves somewhat frustrating. To go from one to the other requires a return to the DVD's main menu. A small hassle, though, for such fine music making. --Bruce ReidDescription
Claudio Abbado conducts the award-winning Vienna Philharmonic in a gala concert recorded live from the Alte Oper, Frankfurt. Renowned soloist Jose Carreras lends his magical tenor to Berlioz' "Te Deum," featuring organist Martin Haselbock, the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Prague Philharmonic Choir, the Tolzer Boys Choir, and the Aurelius Boys Choir. Also included is Richard Wagner's overture to "Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg."DVD:
