Description

The Addams Family is not your typical family: they take delight in most of the things that "normal" people would be terrified of. Relive the misadventures of Americaâ??s favorite frightfully funny family.

5 out of 5 stars hmmm!.......2007-08-31

hey tendays would you really rather have them on 3 double sided disks looking like junk? If you do the math It's 1 dollar (plus tax) an episode. that's a bargain in my book. I've loved this show since I was a kid and I can't wait to complete the set.

5 out of 5 stars First Family of Goth.......2007-08-05

I loved this show the first time I saw it on reruns on my summer vacation from 8th Grade (...back in '87). It's just a great show with some twisted humor and was excellently executed for a show done back in the early 60's. I tend to enjoy it more than the Munsters for it's a few steps back from being seen too cartoony (though it was based on art/comic strips) for the reasons that it was a definate more original concept versus a take on old horror movie characters. Hell, you see women like Morticia out in the world at Marilyn Manson and OZZFEST concerts!!

It's a show that was at the base of GOTH: Seeing the beauty of the darker things life brings you in a humorous perception. I hate flowers, and loved how Morticia would cut roses and display a vase with nothing but thorny stems!!!

If you like Goth and classic tv, put up the Addams Family DVDS...They are a very inexpensive collection and DVDS you are sure to watch many times..

5 out of 5 stars THIS ISN"T GOODBYE. THIS IS HELLO TO PERMANENT OWNERSHIP........2007-08-05

The final volume is on the way. I can't wait to complete my collection. The rivalry between the fans of THE MUNSTERS and THE ADDAMS FAMILY will probably go on into the 22nd century. As long as it's fair and friendly I see nothing wrong with that. Because if we get vicious and nasty we haven't learned anything from these shows. These shows may have had monsters, vampires, witches, ghouls, zombies, and madmen. But they were kind, polite and very caring of their fellow man. Which show is the original concept and which is the poor imitation is purely subjective. The Addams Family is the Charles Addams cartoon panel drawings originally called THE HOMEBODIES brought to life. The Munsters is Universal's own stable of monsters put into a family sitcom. I happen to like both shows and I'm sure a good number of you people do to. However there are some stubborn, ruthless, insensitive people that choose only one and unfairly berate the other. It's very foolish to deprive yourself of great entertainment because of ignorance. The Addams Family knew exactly what kind of show it wanted to be from the very beginning of it's conception. The Munsters were a little lost at first and had no real direction. With a couple of unfunny pilots and a couple of staggering episodes it took a while before The Munsters became the powerhouse that it was. As for this dvd itself it can never be Goodbye when you have the chance to permanently own it. This is one of the greatest shows in the history of television. And now we have the chance to have it in our personal collection. I only wish the unaired pilot was included in this set. There's one more group of people I forgot to mention. The poor lost souls that hate both shows. The Munsters is better! LET THE BATTLE RAGE ON!!

5 out of 5 stars All Good Things Must Come To An End........2007-07-28

I so loved the Addams Family growing up. I will always consider the Addams Family America's True First Family no matter who is in the White House. This final season of the Addams Family is truly awesome. I really must give the studio responsible for releasing this series credit. Most studios tend to so completely over price these old vintage collectible gem's that most people pass them up as being way too expensive. Most folk find overpricing of old series an exploitation of the mostly older folk for whom these old TV shows hold the dearest memories.

Most people know that these series were made way back in the 1960's when the residual rights for actors ran out long ago. Even with the cleaning and other incidentals that come with re-releasing a series gone so long the often Huge Preniums most studios demand is outragouse.

NOT SO with this whole Addams Family 3 volume Set where the average per Volume price was kept to just over $20 each. With all the post production cleaning it takes to get a quality DVD set of an old series out of mothballs and ready to be enjoyed by future generations $20 is a pretty good deal!

The Addams Family are endlessly funny without being the least bit tasteless or vulgar. The mother and father are not disfunctional they are just plain straight up normal weird and what I wouldn't give for parents who loved their kids but who were just plain weird was their only quirk. The core message in the whole of the Addam's Family is Wierd is Beautiful because too often what society deems normal is too a prison of mind body hope and spirit. Normality is a good but too much of even a good thing is not best for all concerned thats the message I got from the Addam's Family growing up and it has served me well indeed!

A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-13

This movie is one of the great classics that everyone should see at least once.

5 out of 5 stars quite simply the best film ever!.......2007-09-10

In my humble opinion this is the best film ever. Stellar acting and incomparable chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Paul Henreid exudes class and bravery. The incomparable Claude Rains. A witty screenplay, taut direction and an emotinal core that builds throughout the film right up to the most memorable ending of all-time. Play it again, and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Only the best!.......2007-09-09

A great movie must have certain components: (1) great acting, (2) action, (3) humor, (4) a compelling plot, and (5) a memorable song. This movie has all five and ranks, in my opinion, as the Best American Movie of the 20th Century.

3 out of 5 stars Good but definitely not the best.......2007-09-06

I was very excited when i first watched this movie because it is almost on top of lists of all-time greatest movies and the reviews are like wow.. this must be really one of the best! After watching it, I was kinda disappointed because I think the story is so-so, there is no chemistry between the two lead cast (but Bergman is very lovely though). I don't know what's so special about this movie. Did I miss it or what?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie, excellent presentation and special features.......2007-08-15

At 55 years of age, you'd think a movie lover such as myself would have seen Casablanca... but I hadn't until I bought this disc in July of 2007. If you understand what makes a finely crafted film that you can watch repeatedly and still continue to find things out about it that you love, this is one you'll enjoy immensely.

Start with the script - it is filled with tasty classic lines you'll really enjoy hearing in the context of the film. "Here's looking at you, Kid..." for example. Part of what makes all of it work is the vocal treatment by the actors in their delivery. The cast seems very comfortable with the characters they each play and so maybe that relaxed feel carries over to the degree of realism you sense when you watch it. Their dialogue does NOT seem scripted and that's hard to achieve on a consistent basis in a film. I suppose that's a big part of what's made Casablanca such a classic to all who have reviewed the work over the years.

The acting is superb across the board regardless of how small the part. Ingrid Bergman is luminescent to put it mildly. Bogie is really a powerhouse in this one, and Paul Henreid as well as Claude Rains deliver the kind of intimately detailed performances that just make you smile while you watch. Peter Lorre has a smaller part but exquisitely crafted in its execution. He makes it easy for you to hate him, let's put it that way. Sydney Greenstreet gives a solid presentation as well to round out the core ensemble performances given here.

The special features on this disc include a very nice introduction by Lauren Bacall, Bogart's widow. I watched it AFTER viewing the film as I wanted to get the same feel as audiences who originally viewed it in the theater, but I wish I had watched it first. Enlightening to say the least.

Another little gem is a series of trailers for Bogie's other movies. Great slices of the period as far as movie promotion goes! They serve as great reminders of a simpler time in America.

This particular film is a MUST HAVE for anyone's movie collection. I feel that repeated viewings year on year will only make you love it more than you did the first time. Not many films are able to do that.

I can safely say that if you, too, love truly great movies and you decide to purchase this one, it will be the start of a beautiful friendship.

The third season of the popular shonen (boy's) show Dragon Ball Z continues the adventures of Goku and Gohan on Namek, Piccolo's home planet. Goku, who has been in a regeneration tank since the end of season 2, recovers just in time to challenge the sniggering Frieza, one of the most grating villains in anime history. Having defeated Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, and Piccolo, Frieza takes on Goku in a protracted duel. When he begins to doubt his ability to overcome Goku, Frieza destroys the core of Namek, ensuring it will explode in a matter of minutes. Enraged by the death of Krillin and so many others, Goku transforms into the one thing Frieza fears: a Super Saiyan, a legendary warrior who appears once every 1,000 years. As the seconds tick away, the two most powerful individuals in the universe duke it out. While they're beating the soba out of each other, King Kai hatches a plan to use the Dragon Balls of Earth and Namek to ensure a happy ending. As the battle between Goku and Frieza intensifies, the kicks and punches fly, producing titanic explosions. But the duel goes on for more than 20 episodes: With only a limited budget and crude special-effects techniques at their disposal, the filmmakers have to recycle footage endlessly. Dragon Ball Z: Season 3 is more entertaining when the viewer allows a few days to elapse between episodes, rather than indulging in a Super Saiyan marathon. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, brief nudity, tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars shut up you cry babies.......2007-09-15

Oh my God, what is up with all these people that are crying about how they cropped the picture in the new boxed sets. I mean, have you ever tried buying the series in the individual dvds with the starter boxes. I spent tons of money doing it. Now that they have these cheap, un-cut versions out, who cares if I don't see one inch of krillins bald head. Most of the action that occurs on DBZ happens horizontally so the top and bottom little section that was removed isn't all that missed. In fact, I didn't even notice it until I started reading reviews.
I also want to know, what nerdy, no-sex having, english speaking person wastes thier time watching the show in japanese with english subtitles just to see if the voice overs are precise and accurate. They aren't 100% accurate because if they said everything word for word with the litteral translation, the mouths wouldn't match up, you would get board hearing five thousand words that aren't needed. They do a translation that is accurate enough to keep the story the same yet palitable for the viewers so that it is a smooth, easy to watch movie.
Needless to say, the high-def remastering is awsome, the picture has never looked better, especially on a high-def tv. I have loved this series ever since dragon ball. Thank God that it is being released this way because, with tv being high-def and the demand for cheaper prices, who could ask for anything more?!

5 out of 5 stars loved it .......2007-09-10

The cartoon was excellent. i truly liked the graphics and cannot wait till the other series comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-09-09

Finally there is a cheap way for fans to buy DBZ. I remember watching DBZ as a kid on cartoon network. I have been looking since then for a way to get all of the episodes on DVD. They have finally arrived.
I don't care what anyone says by way of criticism about these box sets. If you are a true fan of DBZ, then you will love these sets.

5 out of 5 stars DBZ for Me.......2007-09-08

I am glad that they are releasing Dragon Ball Z as seasons because I was one of those guy's that was buying the tapes when funimation was releasing them for 18-22 dollars a pop for 3 to 5 episodes. These dvd's are the best thing they thought of. GOOD JOB

4 out of 5 stars Fahk yeah!.......2007-09-04

I love this chunk of the show, what with krillin riding a horn through his guts like a rodeo bull and eventually (many episodes later) popping like a grape as piccolo get his chest swiss cheesed by a finger beam. Oh yeah. It's that kinda program. And now its available cheap but cropped. Im used to it now, and having it in perfect japanese format is worth it. I will have episodes 13 of original dragon ball (why they havent gotten through to kidmark and bought back the rights to those first twelve episodes, we may never know) through the end of the show in uncut bliss after I buy this and the android/trunks set. That accounts for almost ten years of collecting tapes and later dubtitled first copy dvds and then when funimation got its 5h1t together and decided to do it right, they split up the cell dvds and skipped to boo. I waited through 2002/2004 and then they finished cell, and then GT, then finally the movies over the past couple of years and milked this cow dry. Now with the redos, they are sorta making up for it, but the widescreen thing was of course sand in our faces, and we may buy the definitive boxed set on blue ray or some other funky format in the future that is considered by hardcores as perfectly perfect. So what. If that thing is like 30 bucks a pop, I may pick that one up too.

Despite critical barbs as sharp as a Maroobi spear, Gilligan's Island has proven unsinkable. Its first season was 1964's top-rated show. The expository theme song is one of television's most quoted, and its characters--the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.), first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), the millionaire (Jim Backus) and his wife (Natalie Schaefer), a movie star (Tina Louise), "and the rest" (Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, as the Professor and Mary Ann, wouldn't get their opening credit props until season two)--are pop culture icons. Revisiting the first season's 36 episodes is a not-guilty-at-all pleasure. Some sure and surprising hands piloted these inaugural episodes, including Ida Lupino, Jack Arnold (The Creature from the Black Lagoon), Christian Nyby (The Thing), and Richard Donner (who went on to direct Superman and Lethal Weapon).

The "seven stranded castaways" from the ill-fated S.S. Minnow (slyly named for former Federal Communications Commission head Newton "vast wasteland" Minow) received memorable visits from the likes of Hans Conreid as errant pilot Wrong Way Feldman, a young Kurt Russell as Jungle Boy, and Larry Storch as a Cagney-esque bank robber. But these were mere diversions from the heart of the series; the no-man-is-an-island social microcosm that creator Sherwood Schwartz conceived as an anti-war parable (this courtesy of his optional commentary during the fabled unaired series pilot). In the Christmas episode "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk," Santa Claus himself drops in to lift the disheartened castaways' spirits. "You could have been enemies," he tells them, "instead of a family group who all learned to get along." This is they key to this series' enduring popularity. That, and the unending debate: Ginger or Mary Ann? --Donald Liebenson

Description

EPISODE SYNOPSES Pilot: Ginger, Maryann and the Professor are different people. Mary-Ann's name is Bunny and her character is more like the current Ginger. Ginger is more like Mary-Ann but still called Ginger. The Professor is very much a ladies man. Since the episode never aired, the show was drastically altered, characters were replaced and so was the now, unforgettable theme song. Episode 1: "Two on a Raft" - The castaways find themselves marooned on the island. Gilligan and the Skipper set sail on a home-made raft in an attempt to find help. After sailing for days and battling obstacles such as sharks and Gilligan's unending hunger, they land back on Gilligan's island without realizing it. Episode 2: "Home Sweet Hut" - A hurricane is coming, so the Castaways must quickly build one large community hut in which to weather the storm. However, they soon get on each-others nerves, so they later decide to branch out and build individual huts. Episode 3: "Voodoo Something to Me" - The Skipper fears that the island is full of 'voodoo' when he thinks that Gilligan has been turned into a monkey. Episode 4: "Goodnight Sweet Skipper" - The castaways hear on the radio that a plane is going to be flying over their island, but they will be unable to contact them because their transmitter is broken. Episode 5: "Wrongway Feldman" - When Gilligan finds an old airplane hidden in the jungle, the Castaways discover a long-forgotten aviator living on the island. Episode 6: "President Gilligan" - The castaways decide that they need someone to be the leader on the island, and so they hold elections. Episode 7: "The Sound of Quacking" - The Castaways are faced with running out of food, when a blight threatens to destroy many of their plants. When Gilligan finds a duck in the lagoon, a difficult decision must be made. Episode 8: "Goodbye Island" - Gilligan discovers a special tree sap that can be used to make a good tasting pancake syrup. Then the professor discovers that the same tree sap also makes a super glue, that may allow the castaways to repair the Minnow. Episode 9: "The Big Gold Strike" - Mr. Howell discovers a gold mine on the island. He then hires Gilligan to work in the mine. When gold fever strikes the castaways and Mr. Howell is unwilling to share the gold, they begin to charge outlandish prices for the supplies and food that Mr. Howell needs. Episode 10: "Waiting for Watubi" - While digging, the Skipper uncovers a carved statue of a Tiki God. He then believes a curse has fallen on him for disturbing the resting-place of Watubi, and that his days are numbered. Episode 11: "Angel on the Island" - Mr. Howell decides to put on a play, staring Ginger, after she begins to suffer from home sickness. Trouble begins, however, when Mrs. Howell decides she wants to play the starring role. Mel Blanc is the voice of the parrot. Episode 12: "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk" - During Christmas, the Castaways get homesick and remember the first day they were shipwrecked. When Santa Claus "appears" on the island, many suspect he is the Skipper in costume. However, just as Santa departs while wishing the Castaways a Merry Christmas, the Skipper appears from the other direction. Episode 13: "Three Million Dollars More or Less" - Mr. Howell loses $3 million to Gilligan in a golfing contest. Mr. Howell then tricks Gilligan into trading for a worthless oil well that he owns. Episode 14: "Water Water Everywhere" - Talk about a painful irony: though surrounded by water, the Castaways suddenly discover that their supply of fresh drinking water is running out. Episode 15: "So Sorry, My Island Now" - The Castaways are captured by a Japanese sailor who thinks that WWII never ended. When the other castaways are captured, it is up to Gilligan to save them. Episode 16: "Plant You Now, Dig You Later" - While working for Mr. Howell, Gilligan unearths a chest. The castaways think it must contain a pirate's treasure. Episode 17: "Little Island, Big Gun" - A mob leader and his henchmen, fleeing from the police, land on the island. Episode 18: "X Marks the Spot" - In a test of a deadly new missile, called "Operation Powder Keg," the Air Force chooses an "uninhabited island" which just happens to be Gilligan's Island. Episode 19: "Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy" - Gilligan discovers a jungle boy living on the island. He shows them a hole in the ground that causes objects to float, and the professor theorizes that it is expelling either helium or hydrogen. Kurt Russell is the guest star. Episode 20: "St. Gilligan and the Dragon" - Angry because the men haven't kept their promise to build them private houses, the women decide to move to the other side of the island in protest. Episode 21: "Big Man on Little Stick" - Handsome surfer Duke Williams rides a giant tsunami to the island. At first, the castaways are excited as Duke thinks he will turn around and surf back to Hawaii (and send help). However, after seeing Mary Ann and Ginger, he decides he may want to stay for a while. Episode 22: "Diamonds Are an Ape's Best Friend"- A gorilla is enchanted by Mrs. Howell's perfume and kidnaps her. After Gilligan accidentally spills the perfume all over his shirt, the gorilla decides to release Mrs. Howell and exchange prisoners. Episode 23: "How to be a Hero"- After Gilligan is unable to save Mary Ann from drowning in the lagoon, the Skipper must jump in and rescue both of them. The Castaways then devise schemes to boost Gilligan's ego, and help him feel like a hero. Episode 24: "The Return of Wrongway Feldman" - The castaways are revisited by 'Wrongway' Feldman. Episode 25: "The Matchmaker" - Mrs. Howell decides to engineer a romance between Gilligan and Mary Ann. Episode 26: "Music Hath Charm" - Mrs. Howell decides to form a symphony orchestra, to make up for the lack of culture on the island. Gilligan's drum beats, as they drift across the water, hold special meaning to angry natives on a nearby island. Episode 27: "New Neighbor Sam" - The Castaways overhear the voices of gangsters discussing buried treasure and threatening their lives. The voices turn out to belong to a parrot, who then leads the castaways to the "treasure." Episode 28: "They're Off and Running" - Mr. Howell wins all of the Skipper's possessions betting on turtle races. Even when he feels bad and switches the turtles so that Skipper will finally win, he still wins! Episode 29: "Three to Get Ready" - The Skipper insists a stone found by Gilligan will grant the finder three wishes before sundown. The professor, of course, insists it is just superstition. Episode 30: "Forget Me Not" -The Professor tries to cure the Skipper's amnesia by hypnotizing him and taking him through time. Episode 31: "Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home" - The Castaways discover that Gilligan has been keeping a secret diary. When they read it, they all seem to disagree with how certain events unfolded and tell their side of the story. Episode 32: "Physical Fatness" - Gilligan and the Skipper plan to join the Navy when they are rescued. However, when weighing themselves, they discover that Gilligan must gain weight, while the Skipper must diet. Episode 33: "It's Magic" - Gilligan finds a raft, oh wait, no, the Great Raftini's magic trunk. Ginger knows how to use the magical tricks and the castaways plan to use the magic to scare away angry natives if they ever got to their island again. Episode 34: "Goodbye Old Paint" - A famous painter who has renounced civilization, Dubov, visits the island (with a short-wave radio, of course). The castaways are hopeful that Dubov will give them his transmitter, but soon discover he does not wish to go back to civilization. Episode 35: "My Fair Gilligan" - After Gilligan saves Mrs. Howell's life, Mr. Howell decides to make him his son. He immediately puts Gilligan through basic training to be a millionaire's socialite son (dream sequence), changing the way he walks, talks and dresses. However, Gilligan and the rest of the castaways miss the "old Gilligan." Episode 36: "A Nose By Any Other Name" - A fall from a coconut tree gives Gilligan an inflated nose and a deflated ego. When Gilligan decides he wants the Professor to perform plastic surgery on his nose, the Professor pretends to perform the surgery, and instead, relies on the recuperation time behind the bandages to allow the swelling to go down. When the bandages are finally removed, Gilligan decides he is happy with his old nose!

5 out of 5 stars It's Gilligan, baby!.......2007-09-09

Gilligan's Island - The Complete First Season is awesome and worth every penny. The first season has some great and classic episodes incluing: Big Gun Little Island, A Nose by Any Other Name, Angel on the Island, Diamonds are an Ape's Best Friend, and Birds Gotta Fly Fish Gotta Talk. Bob Denver was a true talent, his physical comedy and facial expressions still warm my heart to this day. This season is in black and white and the picture quality is fabulous and yes the all episodes are uncut! I also recommend seasons two and three but you must start with season 1, a instant and utter treasure, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD set of Gilligan's Island.......2007-09-09

I bought this DVD set for my husband's birthday. He loved watching Gilligan as a child and was missing the show since it's not offered on our cable network. I bought this set and it is everything it said it would be. It is clear and sound is good. Still in black and white which we both like. It takes you back to your childhood!

4 out of 5 stars Guilligan's Island Season 1.......2007-07-25

Loved the stories - they brought back memories! Only complaint was that there was no way to fast forward a story or skip to the next episode on these DVDs. Kind of annoying to have to watch from the beginning each time!

4 out of 5 stars Colorize.......2007-07-04

When I was a kid and even now, I watch Gilligan's Island. It was a clean cut show and had some silly humor, but I still love the show. On season 1, I wish they would release it all in color instead of black and white.

Forget about a three-hour tour--Gilligan's Island fans can sit right back and enjoy all 32 episodes of the much-loved television comedy and even a few extras with this three-disc set. GI aficionados will probably argue which episode deserves to be called the best in the series' three-year history until the end of time, but few will disagree that its sophomore season (1965-66) contains some of its funniest and best-remembered episodes. For starters, season 2 marks the show's debut in color, as well as the first time the Professor (Russell Johnson) and Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) were mentioned in the opening theme song (all of this occurs in the season opener, "Gilligan's Mother-in-Law"). But it also includes such classic episodes as "Hi Fi Gilligan" (Gilligan picks up radio signals in his mouth), "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" (faux Brit rockers land on the island), "Mine Hero" (a WWII mine washes up on the beach), "Meet The Meteor" (space debris makes the castaways age prematurely), and "The Friendly Physician" (a mad scientist's experiments cause the castaways to swap bodies), all of which have lost none of their laughs or pure entertainment value. The supplemental features, though slight, include an introduction by Johnson and series creator Sherwood Schwartz, as well as commentary by Schwartz on his favorite episode, "The Little Dictator." --Paul Gaita

Description

All 32 episodes are in color as the castaways continue to struggle to survive disasters--both natural and man-made--but never stop trying to find a way to escape in this wonderfully wacky comedy series. Special guest stars include Zsa Zsa Gabor as Erika Tiffany, Janos Prohaska as The Lion, and Vito Scotti as Dr. Balinkoff. Actors: Alan Hale , Jim Backus, Tina Louise, Bob Denver

4 out of 5 stars Gee Eye Double Ell Eye...Gee A Enn Spells Gilligan.......2007-06-28

When I wasn't able to find Gilligan's Island on any TV reruns, I went out and bought the DVDs. It was a great investment.

The DVD set has 32 second season episodes, all in color. The set is light on extras, though.

As I watched these with my family, I recalled every one of these episodes from reruns I saw as a kid. It took me back to a more innocent time, and I could see my young children really liking them. Not a show went by that didn't give us several good laughs.

The transfer is good for a computer screen or large TV. This is innocent, wholesome, good, clean family fun.

5 out of 5 stars Gilligan still good after all these years!.......2007-06-27

I am so pleased with this DVD set! I am having such fun introducing my children to a show that I loved so much as a child. I am definitely going to get the other two seasons, and hope they put more on DVD (there had to be more than 3 seasons of this show??). My triplets are 5 and they love Gilligan! I do get sick of watching Dora and such, so this is a nice break for us all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic TV!.......2007-05-14

Great class TV that is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages! Our family loves watching these old episodes.

5 out of 5 stars "Thanks a lot, Gilligan...".......2007-03-13

After all these years, Gilligan's Island is still silly, outrageous and enjoyable. The second season is probably the best, too bad this show only ran for three seasons but who knew this little show would go on to delight new fans for over 40 years! This show is pure fun, one of my favorite guilty pleasures of all-time. Don't wait, get all three seasons today!

5 out of 5 stars What's to not love?.......2007-01-29

Since I have purchased seasons 3 & 4 of Gilligan's Island, my daughter has been hooked. She may not understand all that she is seeing.....(who does?)...she is glued to the show. Unfortunately there isn't many TV shows out there today that I will let her watch because of all the bad language and inappropriate subject matter. I don't have to worry with Gilligan's Island.....plus I enjoy reliving my childhood by watching them with her.

Though Gilligan and his fellow castaways will remain forever marooned in syndication, the series' network run actually did come to an end in 1967 after a three-year run and 98 episodes. The final 30--which for Gilligan fanatics, include many of the show's best--are compiled in this three-disc set, along with input from creator Sherwood Schwartz. It's not known if Schwartz knew that the series was headed for cancellation, but he and the writers definitely appear to pour on the steam in season 3 to produce some of the series' most imaginative episodes, many of which break out of the island sets through dream sequences; these include the season kickoff, "Up at Bat" (after being bitten by a bat, Gilligan dreams of being a vampire); "Pass the Vegetables, Please" (the castaways gain extraordinary powers after eating radioactive produce); "The Producer: (Phil Silvers guests as a Hollywood director whom the castaways attempt to win over with a musical production of Hamlet); "The Invasion" (the discovery of a government briefcase leads to Gilligan dreaming about spy capers); "The Secret of Gilligan's Island" (a stone table leads to a caveman dream), and so on. A cruise ship's worth of engaging guest stars (Don Rickles, Rory Calhoun, Strother Martin) and amusing performances by the always-game cast make this final season a worthwhile addition to any Gilligan groupie's collection. And doubling its value is commentary by Schwartz on "The Producer" (arguably, one of the best episodes of the entire series), and a featurette about the show's impact on pop culture. --Paul Gaita

We bought these to keep in our RV to watch when we are camping - we can't wait to go on our trips as they are SOOOO funny! We have turned more families on to watching the old shows with the kids. Not much you can watch on tv as a family anymore - so we have to resort to the oldies! They are so classic - buy them for a great time!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as season 2, but . . ........2007-07-16

Still worth the price if it is anything below $20. The episode where Gilligan ends up with plastic explosives as dental fillings still cracks me up to this day.

Based on the original Goth cartoons by Charles "Chas" Addams that ran for decades in the New Yorker magazine, The Addams Family television sitcom portrayed a monster family whose moribund physical appearances were counteracted by each family member's exuberance for passion and adventure. This Volume Two DVD contains twenty-one episodes, including the last of season one and the whole of season two, plus commentaries, and a featurette about the cinematic impact The Addams Family had on American television culture. Premiering the same year as The Munsters, this short-lived series was one of the first two shows to take issue with the Leave It To Beaver aesthetic that dominated television throughout the 50s, in which perfect families narrowly defined normality in the American home. Instead, it starred a family feared by neighbors, who within the boundaries of their haunted Victorian mansion invented their own thriving, not to mention fun, culture. The Addams Family proved that outsiders could be extremely gracious, educated, and interesting, even if eccentricities rendered their looks a threat.

These episodes include the original cast: Gomez (John Astin) and Morticia (Carolyn Jones), Uncle Fester (Jackie Coogan), the two children Wednesday and Pugley, butler Lurch, hairy Cousin Itt, and the enigmatic hand, Thing, who plays castanets for the married couples' cha cha parties, and looks up things in phone books. Macabre humor in each episode reverses average, expected logic. Flower arranging, for Morticia, involves de-budding and stripping roses of all but the thorns. In "Morticia, The Sculptress," Gomez bribes a local art dealer to buy Morticia's hideous art at the Addams Family's own expense, revealing Gomez to be a strange but loving husband. In most episodes, such as "Lurch, The Teenage Idol" and "Cousin Itt and the Vocational Counselor," The Addams' aim to help their loved ones succeed, in these cases Lurch, as a harpsichord-playing pop star, and Itt, on a career search for an unintelligible, hair-covered little person. The Addams Family house interior still looks exquisite forty years later, full of taxidermied animals, antique furniture, carnivorous plants, and medieval charm. One watches this show not only for its sets and costumes, but also for its refreshingly wide take on what successful families can look like. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Almost there!.......2007-08-16

The good: the shows look great and, hey, it's the Addams Family!

The bad: this screwy idea of releasing part of Season One on the first set, then the rest of Season One and part of Season Two on the second. Who thought customers would dig that!?

Also, since I'm about to commit heresy, let me just say that Gomez is still my role model as a husband and father (even though I don't let my kid play with dynamite or have a pet lion). That said, here goes: the episodes are a little more hokey than I remember--not just as a kid, but as an adult.

Bottom line: I highly doubt that you'll be disappointed, but the minuses are just enough to take it under five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful set!.......2007-08-08

I forgot how much I missed these programs. Often I'm afraid that a show I used to think was really good will not be as entertaining. If anything, these are better than I remembered! Charles Addams would be proud.

Prejudice and acceptance clash in Halloweentown High when Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) attempts to prove that humans and the supernatural inhabitants of Halloweentown can peacefully co-exist in the mortal world. Thanks to a slip of the tongue, Marnie's brainstorm to sponsor a high school exchange student program between Halloweentown and her own high school quickly turns into a battle to save the Cromwell family's magical powers and keep the portal between worlds open. An already arduous undertaking becomes even more difficult when the supposedly fictional Knight of the Iron Dagger starts haunting the Halloweentown exchange students right in the mortal world. In the end, it is the common mortals who, by demonstrating tolerance and a commitment to equality, possess the power to save the Cromwells' magic and the entire human world. This third movie in the Halloweentown trilogy focuses primarily on Marnie. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), Gwen (Judith Hoag) and the other Cromwell family members are secondary characters with less prominent roles than in the previous two productions. Makeup and costuming is top rate in this Disney Channel original movie, the trolls and ogres are not too scary, and bonus games and activities are plentiful. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Description

Back to school's never been so cool or supernatural for Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown), her grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), and her family of witches in this latest chapter in the ever-popular series of HALLOWEENTOWN movies. But soon, Marnie and her new friends are in trouble and out of luck when the evil Knight Of The Iron Dagger appears. He's determined to destroy all things magical, and it's up to Marnie to save her high school, the human world, and her magic. For a bewitching good time, HALLOWEENTOWN HIGH is the perfect treat.

4 out of 5 stars Respectable Sequel.......2007-09-11

The one thing that stands out about this series is its consistency. This sequel fits in logically and is well written for this type of Disney fare. The only part that was annoying was the lack of plot for the youngest child, Sophie. She was certainly left out of the action.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Halloween Movie for all.......2007-08-27

I am a fan of the whole Halloweentown series, but this particular movie is probably the best for a varied audience. My children range in ages: 8, 11 and 15. The first two movies have scenes that are a little too intense for my 8 year old daughter. Halloweentown High has enough "monsters" to make it exciting for my 11 year old son and 15 year old daughter, but nothing too creepy for the 8 year old to handle. The story (the attempt to keep those who are different from being descriminated against) has a very good message as well.

In addition to being a perfect Halloween movie for the whole family, the "extras" section has some terrific ideas for Halloween party games. I definitely recommend this move - and Amazon offers it at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults too!.......2007-07-22

If you like to watch with your kids then this is a sure fire hit. Story is entertaining and the actors are great. Plus to see Debbie Reynolds in this type of role is interesting too.The whole series is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie .......2007-03-13

Doesn't have to be audited by an adult before letting your child watch. It is a cute movie about a family that has a problem--- the females are witches. This movie is later on in the series and follows a budding witch into high school. Really cute for adults too.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-02-07

Ranking No. 21 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films, this 1940 classic is a bit dated in its noble sentimentality, but it remains a luminous example of Hollywood classicism from the peerless director of mythic Americana, John Ford. Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck's classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California, but it's the story's emotional resonance and theme of human perseverance that makes the movie so richly and timelessly rewarding. It's all about the humble Joad family's cross-country trek to escape the economic devastation of their ruined farmland, beginning when Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns from a four-year prison term to discover that his family home is empty. He's reunited with his family just as they're setting out for the westbound journey, and thus begins an odyssey of saddening losses and strengthening hopes. As Ma Joad, Oscar-winner Jane Darwell is the embodiment of one of America's greatest social tragedies and the "Okie" spirit of pressing forward against all odds (as she says, "because we're the people"). A documentary-styled production for which Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland demanded painstaking authenticity, The Grapes of Wrath is much more than a classy, old-fashioned history lesson. With dialogue and scenes that rank among the most moving and memorable ever filmed, it's a classic among classics--simply put, one of the finest films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This remarkable film version of Steinbeck?s novel was nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including for Best Picture, Actor (Henry Fonda), Film Editing, Sound and Writing. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar® and actress Jane Darwell won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ma Joad, the matriarch of the struggling migrant farmer family. Following a prison term he served for manslaughter, Tom Joad returns to find his family homestead overwhelmed by weather and the greed of the banking industry. With little work potential on the horizon of the Oklahoma dust bowls, the entire family packs up and heads for the promised land ? California. But the arduous trip and harsh living conditions they encounter offer little hope, and family unity proves as daunting a challenge as any other they face.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Film to Watch - Then Read the Book.......2007-08-22

We all know the Depression was awful. There were people starving, families collapsing. It's hard to really get a sense of just how powerful it was, though. John Steinbeck's articles and books on the topic led to this award winning (AFI #21) movie by John Ford. What's ironic is that some people felt the movie was too extremist about the conditions - but research has shown that it actually was tame compared to situations that really went on.

We begin with a family in Oklahoma who is literally kicked out of their home, with nowhere to go. Flyers are being passed around about a ton of work being available in California. So they pile their entire household of goods and head out. Unfortunately, so does pretty much every starving person - and California is innundated with workers. The Okies are treated poorly, given dirt poor wages and run out of town.

It's amazing that the books are banned in schools - especially in the midwest! I definitely recommend watching this movie as an important history lesson about what our ancestors struggled through - and a reminder not to let this happen again. Once you get started with the movie, pick up the books to get an even more full story.

5 out of 5 stars Steinbeck's Story Faithfully Filmed.......2007-08-15

I don't recall how old I was when I first saw the film version of "The Grapes of Wrath," John Steinbeck's novel of the desperate plight of the "Okies" during the Dust Bowl era -- I know I'd read the book after graduating high school and before entering college -- but on second viewing, I was impressed by how closely the film followed the book. Certainly, a fully realized cinematic treatment would have overtaxed Hollywood budgets and the average moviegoer of 1940, and the novel's final scene would never have been okayed by the censors, but the overall emotional pull of the film is about as close to that of the book in a way that few literature-as-film productions ever are. (Of recent note in this respect are Peter Jackson's fine films of J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy --although I still haven't forgiven him for leaving out Tom Bombadil.) Of course, the genius lay in the casting of Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, though to be honest, none of the casting choices were faulty. I'm teaching the novel for the first time for a literature class this semester, and I would be quite comfortable allowing non-readers to substitute viewing this film in place of reading the entire book. I can think of no better tribute to a first-rate movie than that.

4 out of 5 stars A Real Movie............2007-08-12

I think the Hollywood of today has forgotten how to make movies, they should look at classic films of yesterday like this one to know what "real movie making"is all about. This is a faithful translation of the John Steinbeck novel that looked at how the dust storms that hit the mid-west in the 1930's, caused many farmers to try and seek out a new living in California, in the center of all this is Henry Fonda's intelligent performance of a man who is trying to help his parents keep the whole family together as they search for and hopefully find a new life together.

If The Munsters was a traditional family sitcom as reimagined by Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, The Addams Family is a macabre twist on Father Knows Best. The Munster and Addams clans made their TV debuts in 1964 and lasted two seasons before the networks buried them. The Addamses are now gloriously resurrected in this three-disc set that digs up the series' first 22 episodes (oddly, 12 shy of the complete first season). Inspired by Charles Addams's New Yorker cartoons, The Addams Family is fiendishly funny, with a dead-on cast that indelibly embodies Addams's characters. John Astin brings a demented glee to eccentric, frighteningly wealthy Gomez Addams. Carolyn Jones is bewitching as his pre-goth wife, Morticia, whom the Beatles might have had in mind when they sang, "Baby's in Black." Jackie Coogan is the electrifying Uncle Fester, with Ted Cassidy (who famously took a kick in the groin from Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is the monstrous butler Lurch, whose "You rang?" entered the pop culture lexicon.

The Munsters was family friendly. The Addams Family is more sophisticated and wickedly funny. As Gomez notes at one point, "There's a touch of madness" in the Addams household, where "every day is Halloween." Bear rugs growl, a disembodied hand, Thing, delivers the mail, and a torture rack is good for what ails you. The children, Wednesday (Lisa Loring) and older brother Pugsley (Ken Weatherwax), enjoy such hobbies as playing autopsy or exploding model trains. Gomez and Morticia were one of television's most passionate couples, with Gomez being driven to arm-kissing ecstasy whenever Morticia spoke French. The last episode included in this collection, "Amnesia in the Addams Family," is a classic in which Gomez is rendered "normal" following a conk on the head. The look of disgust on Morticia and Lurch's face when he asks for a glass of milk is priceless. The "altogether ooky" extras include three episode commentaries, a featurette on Charles Addams, reminiscences from cast members Astin, Loring, and Weatherwax, a segment on the creation of the classic snap-snap theme song ("They're creepy and they're kooky...."), and the inevitable theme song sing-along. The Addams Family at last on DVD? As Gomez might exclaim: "Capital!" --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars An Unusual Observation.......2007-08-31

Despite how unutterably bizarre the Aadams Family was, they were, at heart, truly good people. They were dedicated to their family, to each other, and to their friends. They enjoyed what they had without being greedy or avaricious. They found the idea of allowing the suffering and misfortune of anyone to be intolerable, and always went out of their way to help others, no matter the cost.

Am I the only one who noticed this?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite programs of all time.......2007-08-08

The DVD set certainly didn't disappoint. I haven't seen some of these in ages! There's nothing like watching the Addams Family on a dreary afternoon and having a nice cup of hemlock... well, tea actually.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection!!!.......2007-08-04

A classic showcase of the best family values the only way they should be seen.....through the eyes of The Addams Family. From Cousin It and Lurch, down to Wednesday and Pugsley, these DVD's are a very welcome addition to anyones DVD collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough TV at it's best.......2007-07-30

As a childhood fan of the premier TV broadcasts, this DVD set is primarily of nostalgia value for me. I was fascinated with the Charles Addams cartoons I found in the New Yorker magazine on which this breakthrough sit-com was based. TV families of the day (Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver, The Donna Reed Show, Ozzie and Harriet) all put the emphasis on conformity to being "normal" but at times were just too perfect to relate to. Finally we had a rather anti-normal family who appeared bizarre on the outside, but who still cared for eachother and even helped the neighborhood that rejected them. And the passion between Morticia and Gomez added some romantic excitement never seen by TV couples. I see many similarities to The Simpsons here, in bringing some very off-beat behaviour to anti-normal characters with very genuine human needs. The DVD quality is excellent, and some great bonus features are included.
