With 14 films, each supplemented with numerous documentaries, commentaries, and other bonus materials, Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection will be the cornerstone for any serious DVD library. Packaged in a beautiful, conversation-starting velvet box, the individual discs inside come four to a case, decorated with original poster art.
|
No doubt opinionated fans will argue about what should fall under the rubric of "masterpiece" in Hitchcock's body of work, but with the bona fide classics Vertigo, Psycho, and The Man Who Knew Too Much, there's plenty of timeless movie magic here. Eye-popping transfers and gorgeous sound make this set one of the must-have releases of the year.
Should the Hitchcock fan have the energy for more after imbibing on the movies themselves, a bonus disc provides additional documentaries. These include a revealing interview in which the master of suspense discusses, among other things, how much he dislikes working with method actors, going so far as to name names (we're talking about you, Jimmy Stewart and Montgomery Clift). In an American Film Institute lifetime achievement ceremony, the master of suspense is praised by the likes of Stewart and Ingrid Bergman, and seems to be suffering from severe boredom as celebrities pile on the flattery. Then Hitchcock opens his mouth to accept the award, delivering an endlessly witty stream of perfect bon mots that prove once again that he was a master of high comedy as well. Revealing documentaries about the making of Psycho and The Birds round out the feast of extras. The 36-page booklet, filled mostly with stills and poster art, provides little new information about the films.--Ryan Boudinot
Films Included in Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection
Saboteur
Robert Cummings stars as Barry Kane, a patriotic munitions worker who is falsely accused of sabotage, in this wartime thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Plastered across the front page of every newspaper and hated by the nation, Kane's only hope of clearing his name is to find the real villain. The script as a whole is a clever one--Algonquin wit Dorothy Parker shares a screenwriting credit, and her trademark zingers make for a terrific mix of humor and suspense. Saboteur is a pleasure whether you're a die-hard Hitchcock fan or just someone who likes a good nail-biter. --Ali Davis
Shadow of a Doubt
Alfred Hitchcock considered this 1943 thriller to be his personal favorite among his own films, and although it's not as popular as some of Hitchcock's later work, it's certainly worthy of the master's admiration. Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920's serial killer known as "The Merry Widow Murderer," the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. And, of course, it's all done in pure Hitchcockian style. --Jeff Shannon
Rope
An experimental film masquerading as a standard Hollywood thriller, Rope is simple and based on a successful stage play: two young men (John Dall and Farley Granger) commit murder, more or less as an intellectual exercise. They hide the body in their large apartment, then throw a dinner party. Will the body be discovered? Director Alfred Hitchcock, fascinated by the possibilities of the long-take style, decided to shoot this story as though it were happening in one long, uninterrupted shot. Since the camera can only hold one 10-minute reel at a time, Hitchcock had to be creative when it came time to change reels, disguising the switches as the camera passed behind someone's back or moved behind a lamp. James Stewart, as a suspicious professor, marks his first starring role for Hitchcock, a collaboration that would lead to the masterpieces Rear Window and Vertigo. --Robert Horton
Rear Window
Like the Greenwich Village courtyard view from its titular portal, Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window is both confined and multileveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment, convalescing in a wheelchair, from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Cheerful voyeurism, as well as the behavior glimpsed among the various tenants, affords a droll comic atmosphere that gradually darkens when he sees clues to what may be a murder. At deeper levels, Rear Window plumbs issues of moral responsibility and emotional honesty, while offering further proof (were any needed) of the director's brilliance as a visual storyteller. --Sam Sutherland
The Trouble with Harry
A busman's holiday for Alfred Hitchcock, this 1955 black comedy concerns a pesky corpse that becomes a problem for a quiet, Vermont neighborhood. Shirley MacLaine makes her film debut as one of several characters who keep burying the body and finding it unburied again. Hitchcock clearly enjoys conjuring the autumnal look and feel of the story, and he establishes an important, first-time alliance with composer Bernard Herrmann, whose music proved vital to the director's next half-dozen or so films. But for now, The Trouble with Harry is a lark, the mischievous side of Hitchcock given free reign. --Tom Keogh
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. The Man Who Knew Too Muchis the work of a master in his prime. --Tom Keogh
Vertigo
Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson
Psycho
For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. --Jim Emerson
The Birds
Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however, The Birds is also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963, The Birds has grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films. --Robert Horton
Marnie
Sean Connery, fresh from the second Bond picture, From Russia with Love, is a Philadelphia playboy who begins to fall for Tippi Hedren's blonde ice goddess only when he realizes that she's a professional thief; she's come to work in his upper-crust insurance office in order to embezzle mass quantities. His patient program of investigation and surveillance has a creepy, voyeuristic quality that's pure Hitchcock, but all's lost when it emerges that the root of Marnie's problem is phobic sexual frigidity, induced by a childhood trauma. Luckily, Sean is up to the challenge. As it were. Not even D.H. Lawrence believed as fervently as Hitchcock in the curative properties of sexual release. --David Chute
Torn Curtain
Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense of Torn Curtain is by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business. --Ali Davis
Topaz
Alfred Hitchcock hadn't made a spy thriller since the 1930s, so his 1969 adaptation of Leon Uris's bestseller seemed like a curious choice for the director. But Hitchcock makes Uris's story of the West's investigation into the Soviet Union's dealings with Cuba his own. Frederick Stafford plays a French intelligence agent who works with his American counterpart (John Forsythe) to break up a Soviet spy ring. The film is a bit flat dramatically and visually, and there are sequences that seem to occupy Hitchcock's attention more than others. A minor work all around, with at least two alternative endings shot by Hitchcock. --Tom Keogh
Frenzy
Alfred Hitchcock's penultimate film, written by Anthony Shaffer (who also wrote Sleuth), this delightfully grisly little tale features an all-British cast minus star wattage, which may have accounted for its relatively slim showing in the States. Jon Finch plays a down-on-his-luck Londoner who is offered some help by an old pal (Barry Foster). In fact, Foster is a serial killer the police have been chasing--and he's framing Finch. Which leads to a classic Hitchcock situation: a guiltless man is forced to prove his innocence while eluding Scotland Yard at the same time. Spiked with Hitchcock's trademark dark humor, Frenzy also features a very funny subplot about the Scotland Yard investigator (Alec McCowen) in charge of the case, who must endure meals by a wife (Vivien Merchant) who is taking a gourmet-cooking class. --Marshall Fine
Family Plot
Alfred Hitchcock's final film is understated comic fun that mixes suspense with deft humor, thanks to a solid cast. The plot centers on the kidnapping of an heir and a diamond theft by a pair of bad guys led by Karen Black and William Devane. The cops seem befuddled, but that doesn't stop a questionable psychic (Barbara Harris) and her not overly bright boyfriend (Bruce Dern, in a rare good-guy role) from picking up the trail and actually solving the crime. Did she do it with actual psychic powers? That's part of the fun of Harris's enjoyably ditsy performance. --Marshall Fine

Necessarily flawed.......2007-09-14
The best this set rates is 3 stars, and not only for packaging issues previously mentioned.
It's unfortunate that a deal couldn't have been worked out with MGM/UA so that NORTH BY NORTHWEST might have been included here rather than the boring TOPAZ. Even better would be the inclusion of such great WARNER BROS. titles like DIAL M FOR MURDER instead of MARNIE, THE WRONG MAN rather than ROPE and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN as replacement for TORN CURTAIN.
Let's tell it plainly here. This is not so much a "masterpiece collection" as it is the best Hitchcock titles that UNIVERSAL/MCA has in their vaults (along with some less-than-great filler). With such a substantial project as this, perhaps the various studios owed it to Hitchcock to cooperate. And if they had, wouldn't the four substitutions suggested above TRULY make this DVD set Hitchcock's masterpiece collection?
ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS - SEASON THREE features some of the best TV episodes from the Master of Suspense.
A GREAT SET FOR THE PRICE! MISSING SOME GREAT FILMS!.......2007-09-08
I didn't have any of these films on DVD so,..... When I saw it on sale for around $65.00 I thought it was a great deal for 14 films with some extra material. I would have liked to see a few different films in this set,but they ended up putting most of those in another DVD set with the exception of "LifeBoat" and "Notorious". I think all "Hitches" missing films should be put into similar sets. This is a nice set, but wait to see it at the right price. These will be dropping way down before you know it. The transfers look very good!
Pick this along with the Signature Collection and you're done!.......2007-08-23
First things first - This collection is brilliant and the packaging is also good. Its a velvet box containing 4 DVD boxes, each box containing 4 or 3 discs/films and a booklet with a short writeup on each film.
When it arrived, one of the 4 sets was missing, and one was duplicated.
That is: I had 2 sets of the same films, and one set was missing.
I wrote back to the Amazon Customer Support and got an immediate reply saying they will replace it.
This set does not include certain must-have classics like
Strangers On A Train
North By North West
Dial M For Murder
Foreign Correspondent etc.
All this is available in the Signature Series which I picked up from here.
So if you buy these 2 box sets, you're done!!!
5 Stars for the movies, 1 Star for the packaging.......2007-08-13
I would love to have most of the DVDs in this collection, but I won't get it because of the poorly-designed packaging. I don't want 4 DVDs crammed into one case with the artwork reproduced one-quarter size and overlapping. I want each DVD in its own case with full-sized artwork on the cover. If the idea was to make it more compact, the space saved is insignificant. I think the real reason is corner-cutting to save a few bucks. The other Hitchcock set did it the right way- 1 DVD per case. This is very disappointing. For a lot of us, aesthetics count for a lot. Actually, my ideal preference would for all box sets to be packaged chronologically, in the order each film was released.
Poor packaging........2007-06-01
This is a great set minus the annoying packaging. As someone mentioned earlier the DVD cases are fitted to go in a certain order and if they don't go in in that order then they get stuck and the edges of the DVD cases get frayed. The corners of the cases get frayed anyway because the cases are a paper and cardboard-based binding with the plastic DVD holders glued on to them. So I put them in spine first now. Open and close them enough times and you get those white, worn edges on the spine. Another problem with the cases is that the plastic glued on part that hold the DVDs in place are notorious for getting de-glued. Yet another thing. . .one disc is now not holding in the case properly. How could I remedy this problem? Buy an entire new set??? The door on the velvet box doesn't snap shut in anyway so if you hold the wrong side down. . .the DVDs will fall out. So watch out. The velvet box looks and feels nice but it collects dust very easily and is not easily cleanable. I tried to brush off some of the dust and the silvery logos and such began to flake off.

You're better off having been born after, say, 1965, if you really want to enjoy this corny romantic comedy and its abundant references to the MTV culture of the mid-1980s--and even then the odds are only 50-50 that you'll have a shamelessly good time. But a lot of people beat those odds, because The Wedding Singer was a surprise box-office hit when released in early 1998, and it resulted in Saturday Night Live graduate Adam Sandler's salary going ridiculously sky-high. It's a schizophrenic film about a seemingly schizophrenic wedding singer (Sandler) who's charmingly sweet to some people but a tongue-lashing maniac to others, probably out of frustration over his fading ambition as a wannabe rock star (not to mention Sandler's penchant for loud-mouthed lunacy). When he meets an admiring young waitress (delightfully played by Drew Barrymore), it's love at first sight, complicated by their pending marriages to much less appealing fiancés. The plot then contorts itself to accommodate this contrived will-they-or-won't-they? scenario, so you're better off ignoring the love story and focusing on the comedy, which is sporadic but occasionally hilarious. This is also a lighter, friendlier Sandler than moviegoers had seen before, which probably accounts for the movie's success. Toss in a fine supporting cast--including a show-stopping drunk act by indie-movie stalwart Steve Buscemi--and you've got the ingredients for a no-brainer that's ultimately more fun than it is annoying. --Jeff Shannon

This was outrageous!.......2007-08-12
I just need to say that this movie was so funny. Adam Sandler was at his best, showing off how funny he can truly be. In all of Adam Sandler's movies that are comedies, it is usually pretty funny, but this just totally redefined funny. It is about a 35 year-old wedding singer named Robby Hart who has to deal with being left at the alter by his wild, bitchy wife. This new addition adds some really funny new footage to a totally funny movie. I definitely reccomend it.
Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2007-08-08
An exceptional romantic comedy, The Wedding Singer, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck wedding singer who following being stood up at the alter believes he will never experience true love. That's all going to change when a girl he works with asks for his help in planning her own wedding...
Aside from all the humor (and it is endless...), The Wedding Singer is a film about human relations, hope and second chances.
Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Steve Buscemi, Billy Idol (!), and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again! The film is simple enough, but does a great job of describing people's every day lives and the problems they face. It just goes to show that simplicity is often far better than complexity, when trying to present issues of a human nature.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the GREAT 80's music (!!!), and the HUMOR (!) are all wonderful!
In short, The Wedding Singer is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! BRING ON THE SEQUEL!
SANDLER AND BARRYMORE HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE LIKABLE!.......2007-08-05
After Billy Madison & Happy Gilmore it was nice to see Adam Sandler play a character who was likable. Robbie Heart is a rock cover band singer turned wedding singer and longs to be married and have a family of his own. The film is set in the 80's with hilarious results! The music and hairdos alone are enough to make this film watchable, but the it's the chemistry between the two stars that make this a extremely good romantic comedy! One of Sandlers best if not the best. The DVD transfer is very good.
A nice day for a white wedding..........2007-07-27
This is a typical Adam Sandler movie--full of laughs and entertainment. If you like revisiting the 80s with the music--Boy George, Billy Idol and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, you'll enjoy this. Adam plays a wedding singer that was stood up at the altar. Drew Barrymore play a waitress that is about to marry a "Miami Vice" wannabe. As you may have guessed the two realize they were meant for each other and the rest is pure good entertainment. It was fun to reminisce about those 80s. I'm a wedding photographer and I must say the kind of gigs the wedding singer did and the people he encountered, were so typical and realistic--especially table 9! Anyways, not the most technically perfect movie, but full of good Adam Sandler comedy. I had to watch this movie again. I laugh a lot everytime I see it...
This is really really Sandler and Barrymore.......2007-07-24
I love this movie , and they acted so ( damn ) good ; how we realize that every man so easyly become someone not him , as long as he could attract the girl that he like . Anyway, the music is could , i wish i could find you spin me round from extras , but i get ( again ???? ) do you really want to hurt me . But , the best part of this movies is.....(it's nice ) to grow old with you.....i dedicated that tags to my sons

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and First Contact (#8 in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race. Time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise, and capable direction by Next Generation alumnus Jonathan Frakes makes this one rank with the best of the bunch. Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his able crew travel back in time to Earth in the year 2063, where they hope to ensure that the inventor of warp drive (played by James Cromwell) will successfully carry out his pioneering warp-drive flight and precipitate Earth's "first contact" with an alien race. A seductive Borg queen (Alice Krige) holds Lt. Data (Brent Spiner) hostage in an effort to sabotage the Federation's preservation of history, and the captive android finds himself tempted by the queen's tantalizing sins of the flesh! Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before." --Jeff Shannon
Description
In their second big screen adventure, the year is 2373 and the crew of the Enterprise-E has learned the Borg has returned. Because of Captain Picard's past experiences with the Borg, Starfleet has ordered the Enterprise to stay out of the fight. Realizing too much is at stake, Picard disobeys orders and takes the Enterprise to Earth. His knowledge of Borg technology leads the Federation fleet to victory, but a Borg sphere escapes and opens a temporal vortex. The Enterprise pursues and travels back to April 4, 2063; the day before the first warp flight.

A must-have for any Trek fan..........2007-09-14
...but I must say...
There's nothing like a good running commentary, and Jonathan Frakes' is nothing like a good running commentary...
Excelente!!!.......2007-07-12
Los dos discos son para deborar, a sí, todo tiene subtitulos en español, y los comentarios son actuales. Solo para disfrutar de una de las mejores pelis de la serie.
First Contact... should have been the last contact!!.......2007-07-10
This was the last movie that was even halfway decent. After this one, I don't know why any more were ever made. There is so much you can do with the star trek franchise and THIS film proves it. It's the first time they have the screen all to themselves (which is to say without the old crew) and it's the only time that they do a decent job of carrying on the torch that was passed to them by the original crew.
First Contact has some of the best actors around. James Cromwell and Alfrie Woodard are positively wonderful additions to the Star Trek phenomena. There were just too many questions left. Too many loose ends left untied. And too many times when I said "so what." during the show. The crew exists as cardboard cutouts of their television personas. The most dynamic character in this movie is the Borg Queen. And that is just amazingly disappointing.
Star Trek saga.......2007-05-13
Good epilogue for the BORG neverending threat to humanity!!! Great Jean-Luc PICARD in the end against the BORG QUEEN!!!!! Not so bad the Klingon WORF!! Nice and offhands rendering of the human race left (especially the creator of the warp dirve engine, COCHRANE, played amazingly well by James CROMWELL!) after the nuclear world war!!!
Great Movie!!!!.......2007-04-05
I really love this movie but beware, I don't know what I was thinking I thought this was the directors cut which usually puts back all the deleted seens in a movie. Well this one isn't it. It will show you the seens deleted as extras but not intergrated back into the movie. Thats my only complaint but that is a minor complaint and totally my fault. The movie itself is a great, try watching it on a big sreen TV you will love it esp. the opening fight seen in the movie when the Borg attack the fleet. This is a great buy so don't hesitate if you haven't seen the movie or just want it for you collection.

Description
Ted (Ben Stiller) is still in love with his high school prom date, Mary (Cameron Diaz), even though it's been years after the humiliating incident that cut their date short. Ted hires Pat, a private detective (Matt Dillon) to track her down, but Pat ends up falling in love with her too, starting a battle for Mary's heart.
Customer Reviews:
laugh out loud.......2007-07-16
Great movie to watch if you are feeling down. Farrelly brothers at their best; Stiller is perfect, Diaz is gorgeous, Dillon pulls it off so well, and Elliot is Elliot. Many scenes are so memorable that I start laughing just knowing they are coming up.
High Water Mark Of "Gross Out" Comedy.......2007-07-13
Ted (Ben Stiller) plays a nerdy guy, with terrible luck, who has spent the last 13 years obsessing over Mary (Cameron Diaz), the high school dream girl who got away. Ted hears she is living in Miami and hires a scumbag detective (Matt Dillion) to track her down. From there all sorts of wacky hijinks ensue- involving Puffy the dog on speed, a psychopathic murderer and Mary trying on Ted's organic "hair gel".
Slapstick comedy has long been a part of Hollywood cinema. But this film takes it to a new level with its hilariously disgusting gags and over the top silliness. It's a sort of "stupid" movie for smart people. The plot is outrageous and all the characters, besides Ted and Mary, are idiots. This is, of course, very much intentional on the part of the Farrelly brothers. I suppose the point might be that these two good hearted souls still manage to find each other despite all the liars, phonies and bad fortune. But the social satire still takes a back seat to the comedy as this movie ranks very high on the "laughs per minute" meter. An extremely funny film that is among the best of it's type.
SOME THINGS GET BETTER WITH AGE...THIS IS ONE OF THEM!.......2007-03-05
I went to see this movie in the theater. It was after the first few weeks of release and I had read the reviews and decided to go see what was so funny about Mary. I must admit I wasn't expecting much, but within the first few minutes I found myself smiling and before long bursting out into uncontrolable laughter! This is a funny movie with excellent characters. I have watched it several times now and I think it is funnier with each viewing. I may not get the surprize laughs like the first time around, but Stiller,Dillon,Elliot and especially Lee Evans are hilarious! One of the great comedies of all time!
Cheesey Hijinx.......2006-05-31
"There's Something About Mary" is like many cheesey romantic comedies, except that is has more heart and more big laughs. One of the best aspects about Mary is that she is attracted to the integrity of men and not just their appearance. Ted (Ben Stiller) is an awkward teenager with braces who wins the heart of Mary (Carmen Diaz) when he shows the character and courage to defend her handicapped brother. He then garners a chance to take her to the prom, but a terrible accident cuts off their relationship, and leaves Ted yearning for her even after she moves to Miami. Through a friend, he hires a private investigator, Pat, (Matt Dillon) to find her. A slimeball from the start, he chases Mary himself and attempts to leave Ted in the dust.
"There's Something About Mary" is meant to be in bad taste, but for humor, sometimes it hits and sometimes it misses. Fortunately, it bats at about .750 and manages some grand slams. Mary is truly captivating enough to enable decency, but the treatment of the handicapped is a mixed bag. Special people are a touchtone to the characters, but there are a few cheap jokes involving the handicapped as well. Ben Stiller manages again to play Mr. Ordinary who is thrown into the worst of circumances, like in "Meet the Parents," and remain a nimble and nuerotic presence. It is a fun movie for all its hijinx and even (sometimes especially) the cheese...(including, notably a guest appearance by Chief Cheese, Brett Farve...)
Fantastic.......2006-01-07

Leave it to British TV to deliver the slickest, most intense take on terrorism on U.S. soil (with apologies to 24, of course). The State Within is a BBC production of the highest order, tense, dense, and absolutely riveting. The miniseries starts with a bang--actually, a horribly realistic explosion of a U.S. airliner bound for London, and the production values are every bit as detailed and impressive as any big-screen action film. Chunks of plane and passengers fall along the freeway outside Dulles airport in Washington, creating havoc and collateral damage in a truly visceral fashion. And then the real action begins. Our hero is Sir Mark Brydon, British ambassador to Washington, played with sangfroid by Jason Isaacs (slightly reminiscent of Daniel Craig as James Bond). Sir Mark has not only an international crisis on his hands, but quickly learns treachery, deceit, and murder lurk within the governments he's learned to trust. The plot is complex but extremely satisfying, far superior than most mass-market thrillers released in theaters in the U.S. Especially delicious is a small but key role as the U.S. Secretary of Defense by Cagney & Lacey's Sharon Gless, whose eyes glitter like shards of ice. Savor The State Within, but be prepared to be rattled the next time you go to the airport--or try to go to sleep. --A.T. Hurley
Description
Can you believe what your superiors tell you -- even if you are the British Ambassador to America? In this high octane, action-packed conspiracy thriller, a terrifying plot is played out along the dark corridors of power. When a flight explodes in mid-air over Washington D.C., the British Embassy finds itself enveloped in a diplomatic catastrophe. What happens next is a cat's cradle of tangled affinities and conflicting interests told through interlinking stories that unfold as British Ambassador Mark Brydon slowly realizes that he is being played by an invisible puppeteer with great power.

Thrills and Chills and More From Beginning to the End.......2007-09-02
Sir Mark, the English Ambassador to the United States, is like Jack Ryan: he is everywhere and into everything, knowing everybody. There is a cautionary subtext about being informed and not trusting what any government tells you to believe. Mostly, this is thrills and chills entertainment. I really enjoyed it.
This international cast of English-speaking actors does a wonderful job at fleshing out these characters. Sharon Gless is a fun surprise. This is not a macho-fueled story. I loved how there were plenty of really interesting female characters. This kept the predictability at a minimum. Also, I really enjoyed watching Jason Isaacs play a good, sexy guy and Ben Daniels do his man-of-mystery thing.
There is a bit of melodrama, and the character development is not very deep. This is not Shakespeare, but the script is intelligent enough. I also love how it captures the sense of place considering that it was probably mostly filmed in Canada. (I used to live in the DC area. You could have fooled me.)
Great Mini Series.......2007-08-27
I bought this DVD recently to fill some time while recuperating for a few days from a surgery. And I was very pleased. The Editor's Review is right on the money. This is an engrossing thriller of the highest caliber. The acting is great and the story is complex and well written and acted. Be sure to give it your full attention while watching. I made the mistate of answering a few emails on my BlackBerry and realized that the first hour was up and I had missed a bunch of the plot and character introductions by not paying attention. 6 hours of entertainment and well worth the price!
review of disks only.......2007-08-15
I've already given this series a 5-star rating. I do have to say, however, that the DVD set disks are disappointing. What is the term? It isn't "pixellated." It isn't "low resolution." Images crash into each other. It is as if a video at 29.97 frames per second were missing one or two frames per second. It doesn't affect the story but it is jarring to the eye.
On another topic, please convert "Die Kinder" to DVD.
It's entertainment, not a documentary.......2007-06-29
"The State Within" is an intelligent, well-acted, entertaining political thriller. What it is not is a diatribe against the United States. Having read reviews claming that it was, I watched "The State Within" with some trepidation. One review said that, with the exception of the death row prison guard, the Americans were all one-dimensional villains. Not true. There were good Americans and bad Americans in the film, just as there were good British characters and bad British characters.
The film does make the point that, in politics, even choosing the better (most moral) choice can lead to unintended and even evil consequences. No one recognizes this better than Mark Brydon, the hero and clearly a good man. There are some veiled references to Iraq, so I supposed those individuals who firmly believe invading Iraq was the correct thing to do might take offense, but that still doesn't mean "The State Within" is anti-American.
The viewer does need to be patient with "The State Within." There's a fairly large cast of characters and it may take an episode or two to keep them all straight. I'm astounded by the reviewer who claimed to have the entire story figured out in half an hour. I'm not sure all the characters were even introduced by that point. The production as a whole is top-notch, and I especially enjoyed Eva Birthistle as Jane Lavery and Ben Daniels as Nicholas Brocklehurst. His character will keep you guessing for several episodes. Also outstanding was the actor who played the prison guard (not sure of his name), He has such an expressive face. Jason Isaacs gives a compelling performance as the lead character Mark Brydon. Ever since I saw him as Lucius Malfoy in the second Harry Potter movie I've found him to be a fascinating actor, and it was so enjoyable to see him play a hero for a change.
Best Mini-Series I have Ever Seen!.......2007-06-28
The state within is one of the best mini-series that I have ever seen. Ben Daniels, Jason Issac, and Norman Jenkins were phenomenal in their portrayl of their characters. Not only is the cast superb, but the plot is so well written and the characters' stories perfectly interlinked, that I sat on the edge of my seat through all six episodes, totally immersed in the conflict and drama being potrayed on the TV screen. This is one of the few movies that I could not predict what was going to happen, who was on which side, and who was romantically involved and their motives. The state within is quite refreshing in this aspect. Usually within the first five minutes of a TV show I am able to guess not only what is going to happen during the episode but also most of the diaologue. This is not the case with The State Within. This mini-series,in my opinion was not long enough, and should be brought back to television as a regular show. It is that good. I can promise you one thing, this movie will make you think and it will keep you thinking long after episode 6 is over. It is well worth the money. I have loaned out my copy to a friend from school and she is keeping it to show her boyfriend and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to show it to his friends:-). It is a great movie and I encourage anyone who gets the opportunity to watch it!

"Oh my God, I'm a trend pimp!" cries rocker Josie McCoy (Rachel Leigh Cook) when she discovers that she and her best friends Melody (Tara Reid) and Val (Rosario Dawson)--collectively known as the Pussycats--have been recruited in a plot to brainwash America's youth into a frenzy of mindless consumerism. Unbeknownst to the Pussycats, subliminal messages in their chart-topping hit "Pretend to Be Nice" are forcing kids to follow the latest prefab trends as if their lives depended on it. Josie's going to be the Next Big Thing, and to her manager (Alan Cumming) and Megarecords mogul Fiona (Parker Posey), the other Pussycats are expendable baggage in their scheme to dictate the cool quotient of teenagers everywhere.
Shrewdly concocted by codirectors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, this wildly comedic update of the Archie comic book (and early-'70s cartoon show) is a deliriously entertaining assault on pop-cultural flotsam, with a disposable boy-band (aptly named "Du Jour") and cross-product marketing ploys that perpetuate blind conformity among gullible teens. Blatant product placements dominate virtually every colorful scene as Josie gamely embraces the cultural blight it claims to criticize, but this isn't Hollywood hypocrisy. Elfont and Kaplan willfully bite the hand that feeds them, and they're having loads of fun while advocating independent opinion. Cook and her pals are more honestly sexy than Britney Spears, and they make genuinely catchy music (although Cook's vocals were dubbed). It's pure fluff, but Josie and the Pussycats was conceived in such high spirits that it's hard to imagine how it could be improved. Even the obligatory end-credit outtakes are utterly irresistible. --Jeff Shannon

Rockin.......2007-06-27
When this originally came out it rubbed alot of industry people the wrong way and did not get great reviews but watching it now -- it seems more applicable to the state of society. It's campy and fun to watch. The dialogue is not shakespear but it's not meant to be. It's a great escape and really makes you think about what and why things influence us.
lovingly original - ! -.......2006-11-23
'Josie and the Pussycats' is hard to categorize. But who cares?
This movie lovingly persiflages the workings of the rock music industry to you. In a highly light, original & refreshing way. Inviting you to sit back and enjoy, you'll be taken in by its humorous whirlwind-plot.
Though 'Josie and the Pussycats'' acting and picturing could have been better, its originality more than compensates. Five stars!
Wonderful .......2006-11-17
I enjoyed the film, it was comical, but had serious side to it. I really, really enjoyed the extra features on the DVD like the Backstage with interviews of the various cast members and my favorite producer Marc Platt. I also loved the music videos.
I truly recommend this.

Great Hitchcock mystery-thriller-romance.......2007-08-17
This is a wonderful movie. A thriller-mystery, but unusual for its psychological focus. Marnie (Tippi Hedren) is a compulsive liar and thief who takes a job as a payroll clerk, steals all the money, and then goes to another town and a new identity--until the rich young Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) catches on and, in effect, blackmails her into marrying him, not knowing that she is frigid and can't stand to be "handled." A very tense and unhappy marriage, as Mark tries, and finally succeeds, in finding out what troubles Marnie. Interesting from a feminist perspective, in that Marnie loves horses and her mother, but can't stand men. Marnie is revealed to be the killer of one of her mother-prostitute's customers. Man-killing and man-hating, yet finally "tamed" by Sean Connery. Hitchcock uses color to good effect. Marnie is also notable for the obviously fake backdrops during horse-riding scenes. Otherwise, typical Hitchcock style, with Hermann music.
Hitch's Last Masterpiece.......2007-07-01
Blasted when it was first released in 1964, this misunderstook Hitchcock film has picked up speed along the way and joined the ranks of his other earlier works. Tippi Hedren stepped in as the leading lady when Grace Kelly bowed out for political reasons, and she gives the best performance of her career. This was the last movie to use all of Hitchcock's "team," and the experience and polish that they learned is all exhibited here. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score is lush and adds much to what is going on. I would highly suggest multiple viewings of this film; each time you will catch more and appreciate the journey that Hitchcock takes you on. I will warn you though; even for a 1964 film, it has many adult themes and is definitely somewhat disturbing in light of its two main characters: a frigid kleptomaniac and her determined suitor who is obsessed with taming her. It was a highly personal movie for Hitchcock; he pushes Vertigo even further and goes to areas that would not have been permitted even 5 years earlier. The extras, including a highly informative Making Of Documentary make this DVD worth owning.
underrated gem, almost.......2007-04-11
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have been renting a lot of hitchcock films lately. Rebecca, 39 steps, vertigo, north by northwest, lady vanishes, shadow of a doubt. rear window, rope, psycho, the birds... so i'd decided to rent a lesser film, Marnie. At first, I was skeptical because I thought Tippi Hedren was not a particularly good actress. After a few minutes, I was captivated until the end. Of course, I had noticed several flaws here and there, but they were far from destroying the movie. I was eyeing Tippi's performance like a hawk, but she did an OK job, considering the massive undertaking. If someone else played Marnie, it might had been a true classic (Catherine Deneuve, Kim Novak, Grace Kelly). But I thought it over and realized that these fine actresses were too good for this neurotic role. Tippi had a down-to-earth quality about her, most likely due to her lack of acting experience. So I thought Tippi was a proper choice. Sean Connery was a good match for Tippi. He seemed like a man who was willing to put up with this crazy character. Everyone else did a good job.
Anyway, the script is what did it for me. It is intelligent and well paced. Many people had complained about the special effects and backdrop as being fake and unconvincing. But I don't think Hitchcock cared about these trivial matters. So, in this sense, it is like an European movie. It is an art film with a Hollywood production. Perhaps Hitchcock was trying to imitate Luis Bunuel, the master surrealist director, who in turn, probably was inspired by Marnie to create his masterpiece Belle De Jour.
Because of these particular flaws, many critics consider this a minor work. As Francois Truffaut said, "Marnie is one of the greatest flawed films in the history of cinema."
UPDATE: After seeing it again, I realized how clumsy Tippi portrayed Marnie. She was clearly out of her acting range in this movie. Also, Hitchcock was known to be a perfectionist so I wonder why he allowed Tippi's performances to slip. Perhaps he wanted to ridicule her because she rejected his sexual advances during the filming. And the more I learned about Hitchcock's relationship with Tippi Hedren the more strange this movie becomes. When Marnie was being raped, it really seemed like Hitchcock was raping her! Yeech!!
However, after becoming more acquainted with Hitchcock's method of directing his "cattles," I suspect that Hitchcock did not make any actual sexual advances. I think he was trying to put her into the right mindset simply for the fact that Tippi could not act. Hitchcock had been known to psychologically set up his stars for their roles to add to the realism. I think Hitchcock sexually advanced Tippi on purpose for this reason!
About the score: Bernard Hermann overdid it. It is like a Vertigo ripoff. Hitchcock's careless direction of his star and Hermann's annoying score are what truly divided the critics. Admirers love the cinematography, colors and dialogue. They become forgiving of everything else.
I still think it is Hitchcock's last great film, but at the bottom of the barrel of his masterpieces. Is this movie worth multiple viewings? I would say yes, but hesitantly. If this movie was shorter, like 90 minutes instead of 133 minutes, I would say definitely.
For those who are already Hitchcock fans.......2007-03-26
If you are a huge Hitch fan (as I am) then give this film a try, but if you haven't seen many films by Hitchcock you'd be better off having a look at some other films first: North by Northwest in the color category & The 39 Steps/The Lady Vanishes/Shadow of a Doubt for his best efforts in black & white. Mind you, I'm not saying Marnie isn't a worthwhile film, just that its 1960s 'repressed childhood memory screws up an adult life' theme can be a bit much to take at times. Tippi Hedren looks great (as usual) as she plays a bunco lady in this film, lifting cash from a succession of employers when she is not flipping out having seen something red in color. Sean Connery has the misfortune of falling in love with her (for no apparent reason other than her Tippi Hedren looks apparently) and thus sets out to try to help her in any manner he can. She pleads with him in the film "If you love me, let me go," but Sean will have none of that & doggedly persists in his mission (spurred on by what who knows). I know it was typical of that era of film making, having rather fake looking scenes set in cars that are supposed to be traveling on roads, but this film has over 7 full minutes of this as Marnie and Connery's character make believe they are in transit to someplace---7 minutes is a lot of seconds in a film, even when broken up by other scenes. Moreover, Hitchcock utilizes several very fake looking matte paintings as backdrops in this film. Maybe it's just me, but all this just reinforced my feeling that the story was a bit forced as well. It's up to you now. Cheers!
Hitchcock squeezed and twisted suspense out of the simplest materials..........2007-01-08
In a more serious vein, the psychiatric undertones of a suspense story had reached a more realistic level when Alfred Hitchcock came to film "Marnie."
The childhood roots of Marnie's problem were certainly the fulcrum of the plot; but they were also a vital strand in her character, the main force of her motivation; and the question of if and how they would be uncovered was as much a suspense mystery as that of if and how the police would catch up with her...
For Marnie (Tippi Hedren) was a thief, a compulsive thief... She would take a job in an office, win liking and trust by her good looks, manners and work; then rob the safe and move to another part of the country, changing her wig, her name, her identity...
This was the sequence when she went to work for Sean Connery, a successful businessman; but he replaced the stolen money, tracked her down, and forced her to marry him as the only alternative to being handed over to the police...
Marnie Edgar had many problems which sprang naturally from character and situation... Cool, desperately detached, she could find in herself no affection for any living thing except her beloved horse... She was sexually frigid, and when her husband used force, she tried to drown herself.... There was a constant threat of recognition by some victim from her past... Marnie was continually in fear of bright red colors and thunderstorms...
The uncovering of the springs of Marnie's neurosis was utterly convincing and bitterly painful... Marnie had always said she was an orphan, but her husband tracked down her mother and brought the two face to face... There was a beautifully acted scene when she met up again with her mother (Louise Latham), who even now could show no more affection to her daughter than Marnie could to her husband... When Marnie watched while this mother lavished her love on a neighbor's child, and Marnie's eyes begged, but in vain, for a morsel of tenderness, as she had begged in vain as a child...
But still, deep in Marnie's unconscious, the roots entwined: the fear of sex, the compulsive stealing as some sort of compensation, the inability to trust a human being with her love, the shattering effect of a blood-red color...
"Marnie" is not a film in which Hitchcock indulged his flair for spectacularly thrilling set-pieces in dramatic, and often precipitous, situations... But it is memorable, among many things, for the way in which he squeezed and twisted suspense out of the simplest materials... When Marnie was robbing a safe, for example, while an office cleaner cleaned the floor inexorably towards her - no more than that - the heart felt like disintegrating...

Cute & Entertaining...lurv Jennifer Tilly.......2007-04-01
Also, would love to know who sings the theme song "Like I Would For U" that plays in the beginning and end of the movie. No artist listed in the credits, no soundtrack, and would love to find that song.
Love on the Side DVD.......2007-01-11
I had seen this movie previously and had enjoyed it. I had found difficulty finding it available then tried Amazon and found it at a very very low price which I was thrilled about. It didn't take too long to get to me and I've been satisfied with the product I received.
