A second look reveals some exit-wound-size holes in the plot, but there's nothing second-rate about the performances or the pacing of this serial-killer whodunit written and directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail and I, The Killing Fields). Andy Garcia plays a cop whose failed marriage and recent spell with the bottle has brought him upstate from L.A to live near his half-sister (Kathy Baker) and one-time partner (Lance Henriksen). But he has barely unpacked his bags when a routine homicide call takes him to a spectacular local dump. There, amid heaps of detective-movie typewriters and colorful bags of garbage, he kicks up a severed hand. This leads him to reopen an unsolved psycho-killer file--codename "Jennifer"--that in turn reopens some old sores in the department. In the noir tradition, Garcia falls hard for his key witness, who happens to be blind (Uma Thurman, playing against the luster Pulp Fiction would Monroe-ize two years later) and in one stroke puts her life, and his career, in exquisite jeopardy. The plot weaves in and out of logic, but the dialogue track keeps you leaning in for the details. Along with the taut and suggestive work by Garcia and Henriksen (as usual, all skull beneath the skin), Jennifer 8 boasts a giddy-to-behold gargoyle performance from John Malkovich as an internal affairs cop whose head cold only sharpens the resentment he feels listening to rogue cops insult his intelligence. --Lyall Bush

Intelligent and Visually Gorgeous Effort.......2006-11-05
As many of my fellow reviewers have noted in their reviews, this is a very understated, and underrated, thriller in the film noir tradition. Andy Garcia's character, to me, perfectly personified a police officer who'd had too many ugly years on the job, giving him a varnish of cynicism and brusqueness that translated into impatience with his new co-workers and surprising gentleness for his new star witness. Uma Thurman was terrific as a blind student who may or may not have something to add to the possible serial killer Garcia's character has discovered. Her personification of a blind woman - the way she didn't focus her eyes, her fumbling hands - were sensitively done and, to me anyway, perfect. The scenery and camerawork are beautiful and juxtapose wonderfully with the violence and chase scenes. However, am I the only reviewer who noticed that John Malkovich plays a dual role in this movie? He is the aggressive, sarcastic IA investigator who hammers Garcia's character, but he is ALSO the mentally challenged janitor. You know, the creepy one who is in the bathroom with Uma in that scene where she thinks she's alone, undresses and gets in the tub, completely in the dark (literally and figuratively.) For sheer creepiness, that scene alone gets a 5-star rating. The rest gets 4 stars, mainly due to a couple of plot holes that are never tied up at the end. Stellar performances from Garcia, Thurman, Malkovich and the rest of them.
Double Johns.......2006-02-27
A superb thriller much maligned when first released, "Jennifer8" is first rate on all counts: acting (who plays conflicted, emotional, intelligent better than Andy Garcia? who plays sensitive yet powerful better than Uma Thurman?), directing and writing (Bruce Robinson's only directing credit...but this is the man who acted in Zefferelli's "Romeo and Juliet," wrote the screenplay for "The Killing Fields" and was the object of Isabelle Adjani's obsession in "The Story of Adele H").
The plot involves a serial killer, a beautiful blind woman (Uma), a Los Angeles police officer (Garcia) who, for mysterious reasons, decides to move to Eureka, California and a series of 7 murders. Director/writer Robinson keeps tight rein on all of the various plot points and also extracts truthful performances out of all.
"Jennifer8" is a must see for anyone interested in the fine art of the American thriller. It is primo entertainment: intelligent, suspenseful and adult.
Excellent Ending.......2005-11-25
A burnt out cop, played by Andy Garcia returns to the small home town he was trained in. Before he even starts work body pieces are turning up in the local dump. The pieces lead him to a previous cold case titled Jennifer but no one else sees the links. Then the table completely turns and he's the one being investigated.
This is a suspenseful chaser. I was disappointed John Malkovich didn't show up until more than half way through the film. His interchanges with Garcia were right on but then Malkovich can work with anyone.
There was a creepy scene with Uma Thurman, the blind witness when she undresses and crawls into the bathtub. Unbeknownst to her is an intruder in the room taking pictures of her.
I was thrilled with the total twist at the ending. It was worth it.
OVERLOOKED THRILLER.......2005-11-15
Generally overlooked in is initial release, JENNIFER 8 is a suspenseful, tense and superbly acted thriller, heavy on atmosphere and intricate plotting. Andy Garcia heats up the screen as an LA cop who relocates to a more serene environment in Eureka, California. Not so serene, however, when he finds himself looking into an open serial killer case. Lance Henriksen eschews his usual villainous role to play Garcia's friend and partner who doesn't know what to make of Garcia's obsession with the apparently unsolveable case. Uma Thurman is graceful as the blind Helena, who Garcia feels is in jeopardy as a possible witness. Kathy Baker gives a controlled, effective performance as Lance's understanding and loving wife. John Malkovich is brilliant in his brief but overwhelming role as as the internal affairs officer who wants to nail Garcia for murder. The killer's identity is surprising and it has a real twist of a climax. Recommended.
POPULAR ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER! .......2005-05-30
The first thought that springs to mind is 'UNDERRATED.' Andy Garcia plays a cop who has recently relocated. He stumbles onto a case that is only a small part of a much bigger picture. What evidence is available leads him to an institution for the blind. He then meets Uma Thurman. Uma is able to give him some information, but obviously, her blindness limits what evidence she can offer. But she offers some interesting bits of information that she can. (What the different cars sounded like....knowing that the killer knew how blind people shake hands....etc) Eventually, Garcia and Thurman strike up a more friendly relationship, and there are some really beautiful scenes. (Like when Garcia takes her on the boat and she is enjoying the sensation of the water falling on her.) I don't want to say too much and possibly ruin the movie for you, but suspense gradually builds, and Andy eventually finds himself facing dangerous accusations, and of course Uma finds herself in danger as well. While the pace of this movie may seem on the slower side, it is well done. (Sometimes this is done so we get a chance to know the characters.) Without ruining the ending, there is an unusally frightening moment towards the end where Uma has to defend herself, and her blindness differentiates this climactic moment from other movies. This movie was made in 92, but it has charm from the 70s and 80s. The scenery is beautiful; the background music fits into the story (rather than being a commercial for new tapes/cds on the market). For some reason, a lot of people who made movies in the 90s decided that for a movie to work, there have to be an absurd amount of special effects; someone has to get beaten up or killed every 5 minutes; there has to be a lot of cursing; and humor only works on a slapstick level. Interestingly, this movie currently only has a few reviews, and some of them are on the lower side. To all of you reading this, sometimes a great deal of value is found in the more obscure things. WARNING: DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED BECAUSE THIS MOVIE ONLY HAS A FEW REVIEWS WITH SOME OF THEM NEGATIVE. YOU'LL MISS OUT ON A GREAT SUSPENSEFUL STORY THAT HAS A LOT OF BEAUTY.

Read this Before Buying.......2006-12-31
First off this is a review of Zoids Choatic Century series as a whole. Second I would have given this a 3.5 if I could.
ZCC is by far the best zoids series in the franchise. That still isn't saying much, this is just your average big robo anime. The voice acting is okay, the graphics again okay, the plot is slightly above average. This is a long series that has a lot twists but its just not the amazing legendary anime everyones making it out to be. Make no mistake this is nowhere near the league of say gundam or EVA. This is your anime you pop in if you have kids or just want something to do du to. Normally I would say save your money but the series cost 12.99 each brand new so try it out if you like then go on if you don't then you only wasted 12 dollors not a terrible waste.
CC awakining.......2005-07-11

Jay Jay may have wings and a rudder, but the crowd he hangs with isn't exactly jet set. Funny-faced flying buddies Tracy, Herky, and Snuffy never make it out of Tarrytown, let alone navigate their way through an episode without swerving into a tailspin. Life's Little Lessons lifts off with Herky faking wellness to get to the fair; from there, Tracy tries tackling sonic booms unsupervised, Herky spins his wheels in a tricky game of opposites, Snuffy gets his propeller out of joint over the impermanence of his snowman pal, and Tracy learns to shelf her impatience, a surefire plan for catching sight of a shooting star. A fleet gentler than Jay Jay's doesn't exist--forget about fastening your seatbelt for these low-flying adventures. In fact, if Lessons' lessons take hold the way its creators intended, preschoolers'll come away even more grounded than when they tuned in for takeoff. --Tammy La Gorce
Description
Contains five episodes. Upsy-Downosis - It looks like Herky's caught a case of "Upsy-Downosis," a kind of cold that causes planes and helicopters to fly upside down. Not wanting to miss out on a trip to the beach, Herky tries to keep his cold a secret! But when Herky's Upsy-Downosis causes him to mess up an important delivery for Brenda, he learns why it's best to let an adult know when you're not feeling well. Tracy's Sonic Boom - Savannah has agreed to help Tracy learn how to fly fast enough to do a sonic boom as soon as she returns to Tarrytown. But Tracy doesn't want to wait that long, and decides that she's going to try to learn on her own! When she flies out of control and has to be rescued, Tracy realizes there are some things that shouldn't be done without the help of an adult. Herky and The Opposites Game - Herky and Jay Jay challenge each other to a game of Opposites. Unable to stump Herky with opposite words like "high" and "low," "wet" and "dry," Jay Jay asks Herky to come up with the opposite of "Snuffy." Stuck, Herky turns to Old Oscar, who teaches him that sometimes you have to look at things in a different way in order to find the answer. Snuffy's Snowman - After the planes spend the day at Frosty Pines building a snowman, Snuffy decides he wants to bring "Jack Frosty" back to visit Tarrytown Airport. That night, Snuffy is shocked to find his snowman is starting to melt! Jay Jay explains that since a snowman's place is in the snow, they should probably take him back to Frosty Pines. That way, Jack Frosty can stay cold all year around, and Snuffy can visit him anytime he wants! Tracy's Shooting Star - After Jay Jay and Big Jake spot a shooting star, Tracy is determined to see one for herself. But after staying up late three nights in a row with no luck, Tracy worries that she'll never see one! Discouraged, she turns to Brenda Blue, who explains that patience is part of any worthwhile discovery. That very night, Tracy's patience is rewarded when she sees the biggest shooting star of all!

Mostly classic.......2007-07-05
Unlike many of the budget priced DVD sets, FRIGHT NIGHT CLASSICS features one movie per disc. Thus, eight films = eight DVDs. There's only a single clunker in this set-- one of those "shot in a week" Philippino specials. The rest range in quality from not bad to really good. Film-to-DVD transfers of ST. CLAIR DVDs tends to be quite fine.
For the ultimate in fright films, check out the HORROR 100 MOVIE PACK. It's a monumental collection of monsters, freaks and the undead.

The first broadcast series reaches its climax as Tenchi, his friends, and the restored knights Azake and Kamidake challenge Kagato, who has usurped the throne of Jurai. (This Kagato is not the "Ruins Buster" villain from Tenchi Muyo! but a rebel Jurai prince banished ages ago.) Kagato attacks, wounding Tenchi's grandfather and kidnapping Ayeka, then withdraws to his fortified palace. Washu creates a computer virus that sabotages the Jurai defense network; Ryoko sneaks Tenchi, Azake, and Kamidake into the palace while bounty hunter Nagi creates a diversion. It's a foregone conclusion that Tenchi will triumph over Kagato, but director Hiroshi Negeshi makes their duel a surprisingly dramatic confrontation between good and evil. Although he's the rightful crown prince of Jurai, Tenchi returns to Earth, his adventures in space counted as "an excused absence" from school. The final episode, "No Need for a Conclusion," returns to the bittersweet tone of the initial "No Need for Discussions." After describing what's become of each friend, Tenchi sighs for the days when "life was like a carnival," although he enjoys the peace that now reigns in Okayama. But as fans of the series know, things never stay calm around Tenchi for long. Rated 13 and up for cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon
Description
Prince Tenchi? Tenchi's grandfather, Hatsuhiko, reveals that Tenchi is the true heir to the throne of Jurai, but will the power of tryth be of any consequence when the evil and powerful Kagato rules the Jurai Empire? The amazing conclusion! Tenchi Universe Vol. 8 (Episodes 23, 24, 25, 26).
Customer Reviews:
The ending of the Tenchi Universe........2004-06-20
Tenchi and the gang find out the true nature of the evil they face, as Kagato comes for them! This is not the Kagato from the OVA series, but a Prince of Jurai who has turned to the dark side of the Jurai power. He was defeated by Yosho and his name erased from history. Now he returns. He battles and wounds both Yosho AND Ryoko, kidnaps the Ayeka and escapes, deciding to fight Tenchi at a place and time of his choosing. He tells Tenchi that he will be waiting for the boy at the Jurai Palace and disappears.
As you can guess there is a good reason why there are four episodes on this DVD. The ending is complex and very detailed, as the gang battles to get through the layers of defenses around Jurai. One by one they show their skill and talent as they help Tenchi get closer to the palace. But one by one they also drop out, either wounded or powerless to go on. Even Nagi and a wounded Ryoko do their best to deliver Tenchi to the palace before they withdraw.
Within the palace the Knights confront two Dark Knights who serve Kagato, which allows Tenchi to slip past and carry out the final showdown with the evil Kagato. At this point think Samurai epic.
The very last episode is a ending without a ending as many of the characters slowly return back to Earth to be with Tenchi and the last scenes are almost the same scenes we saw at the start of the first episode!
Because this TV series, "Tenchi Universe", is so much longer than the OVA, it allows for a lot more character development, more themes and a exciting main plot. True, being made for TV meant it couldn't be as mature, but I felt it was worth the money. Now, of course, the DVDs have been collected into sets, many of which you can get used, so make sure to shop around before you give away your hard earned cash!
Excellent series.......2004-04-01
INTRODUCTION:
Although the Tenchi Muyo anime series became a massive hit in its native Japan and other neighboring nations, it was never fortunate enough to gain that kind of success in the United States. That's a real shame, because this is one of the best anime series out there. It DID air briefly in America on the Cartoon Network, but it never really won the audiences over the way series like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z did. But this series is every bit as good as the animes that DID achieve fame in America. Read on for my review of this set.
BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes.
SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you.
THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are!
DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well. There aren't a whole lot of bonuses, but at least there are some - a number of anime DVDs don't have any at all!
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all the episodes of this classic series on DVD at long last. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.
No Need for an Ending.......2002-10-25
Tenchi Universe ends here, or does it? During the last few minutes of the last espiode, it seems everyone is coming back to Earth and re-start the "carnival" that is Tenchi Muyo!
Tenchi Defeats the evil ruler of planet Jurai, but not easily. After the battle, Tenchi goes back to Earth. Akeya seems downhearted that Tenchi has returned to Earth. Tenchi and the gang gets help from the Bounty hunter Nagi along with Ken-ohki. Ryoko takes Tenchi to the palace of Jurai, but it seems the Ryoko was badly hurt when she was attacked by Kagato. A great ending!
The conclusion the Tenchi Muyo TV series........2002-09-27
These last four episodes have some sad scenes.... Anyway, I don't want to ruin any part of the ending sinces it's a nice ending. Unfortunately, the ending isn't "complete". You'll know what I mean when you watch it. Tenchi is a very good show and all anime fans should see it.
An Excellent Ending.......2002-03-10
I just loved the end of the Tenchi Universe series. I really loved the episode when Tenchi and Kagato go head-to-head in combat. Although I still wonder how Tenchi was able to summon his Jurain power after his grandfather (also known as Yosho, the prince who betrayed Jurai years ago after he refused the throne) gave him the magical sword, Sword Tenchi. I mean it just took one episode; it doesn't describe how Tenchi was able to summon his Jurain power...
But overall, the final episodes show the true insights of the characters (most of them or let's say some), especially Grandfather and Tenchi.
