A coming-of-age story starring a bunch of fiftysomething stars rather than teenage actors, Wild Hogs is a well-intentioned comedy starring John Travolta (Woody), Tim Allen (Doug), Martin Lawrence (Bobby), and William H. Macy (Dudley) as a group of Midwesterners facing their own versions of mid-life crises. They decide to escape their frazzled personal lives and rejuvenate themselves by taking a road trip on their slick hogs. But their journey is less Easy Rider than it is Three Amigos (plus one). As individual actors, each lead is a formidable star. But throw them all together into one crammed screenplay full of scatological humor and uncomfortable homosexual gags and it doesn't quite work. The actors spend so much time trying to outdo each other on screen that they aren't believable as friends, much less comrades. Walt Becker (National Lampoon's Van Wilder) offers minimal direction on a film that could've used some reining in, especially during scenes between Macy and Marisa Tomei (as a diner owner who inexplicably falls for him). There are promises of some interesting vignettes when Ray Liotta shows up as Jack, the leader of a real motorcycle gang. When Jack threatens to break Dudley's legs, Dudley counters, "I'm a computer programmer! I don't need my legs." Without missing a beat, Jack says, "Fine, we'll break his hands." It's not that the lines are so funny, but they way Liotta delivers them that adds some life to this flailing comedy. Unfortunately, his scenes with the rest of the cast are all too few. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars Wild Hogs Is Wild.......2007-09-17

Wild Hogs is one of the funniest movies I have ever watched. From start to finish you will be well entertained. The best part is that you can actually imagine these 4 men out on a "wild" bike ride across the country. The things they get into, the differences in their personalities, etc will keep you laughing for a very long time.

If you like comedy, this is a MUST SEE!

3 out of 5 stars Movie fair........2007-09-17

Dvd was ok but no big deal. The stars are what sold this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Hogs.......2007-09-17

Wild Hogs is another movie that I give 5 stars. From the beginning of the movie to the very end you're constantly laughing through out. Each of the main characters (and I do mean characters!) compliment each other - Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, and William Macy.

How much trouble can 4 middle-age men get into on a biker's road trip? If you have no idea then I suggest you see the movie especially if you are a middle-age biker.

5 out of 5 stars A must see for bikers.......2007-09-17

Wild Hogs is a hilarious look at midlife crisis in a group of 4 friends. A must see for bikers. I laughed throughout the whole movie !!

Wiliam Macy certainly made this movie. without him it would have been a complete dud. All in all, I would recommend watching this movie

As George observes and interacts with everything from dogs, bunnies, bears, and bees to tadpoles, cats, squirrels, penguins, and pigeons, he learns about different animals and their distinct characteristics, preferred habitats, and growth and maturation while developing important skills like map reading, tracking, measuring, and sorting. Preschoolers love seeing their favorite H.A. and Margret Rey little monkey spring to life with the help of animation and are sure to be thoroughly entertained by George's cute antics and boundless curiosity. Best of all, they'll absorb some math, science, and engineering concepts while they watch. (Ages 2 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi

It was a waste but a "pain" to return. My 3 yr. old grandson was bored.

Lots of really good lessons for little ones. Keeps my 1 yr. old grandson's total attention.

5 out of 5 stars TV show trumps movie -- again.......2007-07-02

Don't confuse tbis DVD with the movie "Curious George," which comes in a similar DVD case. These are episodes from the far superior TV show. Not that the movie isn't worth your time and money. This is just so much more so.

The product lives up to the credits: Dr. John on the swinging theme song; Ron Howard and Brian Glazer executive producing; and William H. Macy, who makes the most of any role he assumes, as narrator.

There's an urban, downtown quality to these episodes, from being drawn in the manner of classic New Yorker cartoons to the jazzy soundtrack, extending even to the live action suffixes in which a group of young kids further delving into some element in the episode. Even when they're in a rural setting, you get the feeling these kids aren't suburban spawn.

George comes off as a monkey-fied human preschooler, one of the many elements with which the writers have fun (one character calls George "a city kid"). The Man in The Yellow Hat, though often in the stereotypical Long-Suffering Parent supporting role, manages to be more than a two-dimensional character. Watch these episodes and the ones that still air on PBS and you'll learn of a full cast of characters, only a couple of which could be called "cardboard."

It's always a good morning when my daughter wants to watch, "Monkey George."

5 out of 5 stars Happy 3-year-old, happy parents!.......2007-06-08

I bought this for a long car trip with my 3-year-old son, and it did not disappoint. The stories are appropriate for younger children, and I was pleasantly surprised that my son even enjoys the segments with real children after each episode. (I have tried to forward past them, and he stops me!) As a parent, I like the gentle, loving approach that the adult characters take in dealing with George's mischievous behavior, as well as the emphasis given to George's creativity in solving problems. If your child loves George and his antics, s/he will likely enjoy this video.

5 out of 5 stars So Cute!.......2007-05-15

This is a great DVD! However, it is the same cartoon that you can watch daily on PBS Kids. It is great for the car though because it is VERY long - 8 total episodes with the classroom shorts inbetween. Highly recommended!

It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there's something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about Somewhere in Time that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weeper that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favorite, with no apologies necessary.

In his first film after the star-making success of Superman, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. "Is it ... you?" she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away.

Based on Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they're in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon

They don their leathers, fire up their hogs and throw caution and their cell phones to the wind as they hit the open highway. 5 out of 5 stars Great adventure for everyone.......2007-08-18

I originally judged this movie as another mid life crisis movie. After getting the chance to watch this movie I must admit I was completly wrong. This movie is great. It's a fun comedy with great chemistry between the actors.

The adventure starts by introducing all four characters. Tim Allen, John Travolta, William Macy, and Martin Lawerence. Each character brings something special to the movie. I can say most of the movie I was laughing at loud because most of the humor is physical. There isn't a deep involved storyline so you don't have to worry about keeping track of much.

I would say this movie can be viewed by the entire family as it has few profanities and very little physical violence that is mainly comical. It is really one of the best comedies this year and should be a must view for anyone who wants a good laugh.

The blu-ray version is excellent with uncompressed sound and superb picture. A great addition to any collection.

...oh man this is one funny movie from beginning to end. It is about a group of four middle aged men who decide to take a road trip on motorcycles and be free. Somewhere in between they make a bike gang, the Fuegos pretty upset, and the Fuegos begin to track them down. Hilarious movie from beginning to end. Blue-Ray presentation is amazing (I was watching it in 1080i). This is a definitive for your growing BlueRay collection. A must!

The classic Impossible Missions Force lineup made its debut in Mission: Impossible's sophomore season (1967-1968), which is preserved in this essential set for classic TV fans. Gone was Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, and in his place the supremely confident and smooth Peter Graves as new team leader Jim Phelps, whom most viewers identify with the series. Carrying out the missions assigned from a pre-recorded voice on the self-destroying tape recorder was magician and master of disguise Rollin Hand (Martin Landau, who moved up from guest star to regular cast member with this season), top model Cinnamon Carter (Landau's real-life spouse Barbara Bain, who won three Emmys for her work on the show), electronics genius Barney Collier (Greg Morris), and all-purpose strong man Willie Armitage (body builder-turned-actor Peter Lupus). Among the 25 adventures carried out in this seven-disc set: "The Seal," in which the IMF uses a trained cat to assist in the recovery from an important statue from thief Darren McGavin; "The Town," with Phelps discovering that Communists have overrun an entire hamlet; and "The Slave," in which the team tangle with a Middle Eastern slavery ring. Guest stars include Anthony Zerbe, Paul Winfield, Fritz Weaver, and Sid Haig, but it's the team itself that shines the brightest, especially Landau and Bain, who exude the breezy charm of the series itself (though both would depart the show by the following season). Sadly, the second season set includes no extras. -- Paul Gaita

Product Description

The head of the "Impossible Missions Force", a top-secret government group of operatives, starts a tape recorder and finds out about his latest assignment. Throughout most of the series, they would have to stop some petty dictator or powerful bad guy from whatever evil plot they had against the U.S. or Democracy in general. The elaborate use of electronic gadgetry, masters of disguise and detailed plans that require split-second timing made this tv show an "on the edge of your seater"!

well, i know that's a cliche. i have parents who are senior citizens. they are young enough that they know how to work a dvd player (well, sometimes), but old enough that they don't like all of the sexual references in todays tv. i am always in a quandry about what to buy them for birthdays, etc. i bought season one of mission impossible for them last year for christmas. they absolutely loved it. they watch one episode every night (if they try to watch two, they fall asleep before the second one is over). i prefer gilmore girls and veronica mars and friends (of which i can watch an entire season in a weekend and not fall asleep). anyway, this was a top notch show, and they loved it as a gift. of course, they aren't too high tech, and don't look for bonus features, so i don't relly know about the bonus features. but, i am eagerly awaiting a season 3 on dvd, so i'll have something for this christmas!! and let me say - these guys are way more believable than tom cruise.

Ranked 34 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Films, To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made. A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter (racism in the Depression-era South) and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance, justice, integrity, and loving, responsible parenthood. It's tempting to call this an important "message" movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike, but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic. As Atticus Finch, the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two, Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man (Brock Peters) wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman. While his children, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford), learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred, they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious, mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall, in his brilliant, almost completely nonverbal screen debut). What emerges from this evocative, exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lee's enduring novel, a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film, and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry (including Horton Foote's splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernstein's outstanding score) that seems all but lost in the chaotic morass of modern cinema. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "And little things in between".......2007-09-15

It says a lot that "To Kill a Mockingbird" was made in 1962, at a time when Hollywood was finally able to address the civil rights issue and congratulate itself on its courage for doing so, while not actually presenting material that would be truly challenging to American audiences. If a film like this had been made even ten years earlier, it would have constituted an act of true artistic courage. Made in 1962, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a work of great artistry, but there is nothing overwhelmingly courageous about it.

Critical response to the film version of "To Kill a Mockingbird" seems to fall into two categories. The majority of reviewers have praised the film's beauty and simplicity, its wonderfully natural and understated performances, and its loving evocation of a long-gone place and time. A minority of commentators, including Roger Ebert, have criticized the film's lapses of believability and its use of African-American characters as symbols rather than individuals.

I think that both views are clearly correct. The performances of the entire cast -- in particular, Gregory Peck, Mary Badham and Brock Peters -- bring the story to life so naturally that the viewer seems to be watching the lives of real people rather than a movie. As Mulligan and Pakula point out on their DVD commentary, the entire film is handled with a dignity and restraint that would be unthinkable in later eras of the history of motion pictures.

On the other hand, the film features less meaningful interaction between the black and white characters than one might have hoped -- less, indeed, than takes place in Harper Lee's novel. Tom Robinson, the African-American character most central to the plot, never comes into direct contact with Scout, the viewpoint character. She witnesses his tragedy like a spectator at a play, never seeming to grapple with it personally. When the repercussions of Tom Robinson's story finally threaten Scout and Jem in the film's third act, it is a white character who endangers them and another white character who saves them.

The only African-American character who walks through the movie as a regular person rather than a tragic symbol is Calpurnia, Atticus' household employee, excellently played by Estelle Evans. In earlier Hollywood eras, few black characters could have interacted with whites so naturally and straightforwardly, or been presented as strong and intelligent individuals in their own right without any trace of comedy. But even Calpurnia seems to fade out of the story as it proceeds, and we never see her reaction to the fate of Tom Robinson.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a treasurable movie, in particular for its depiction of the unusual relationship of mutual respect between Atticus and his children and for Elmer Bernstein's score, featuring one of the loveliest main themes ever to come out of Hollywood. But it probably does not deserve to be regarded as one of America's greatest films. Most mockingbirds are gray, but there are two mockingbirds in this movie: one white and one black. Only the white mockingbird perches on the heroine's shoulder to sing his song, and that's a bit disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars must have for serious video collection.......2007-09-12

a classic, so well done, beautifully acted and Peck coes accross like you thought he actually lived his life....

5 out of 5 stars Gregory Peck's greatest role!.......2007-09-04

2008 marks 45 years when this movie came to theatres everywhere. 45 years later the movie still stands the test of time for its acting, its story and proving once and for all there are lots of great movies and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is one of them! Gregory Peck delivered a first class role as Atticus Finch. The DVD also has some wonderful extras including Mary Badham with her relationship with Gregory Peck during the filming. This movie is definitely a classic for everyone to watch!!

5 out of 5 stars A socially relevant movie men can watch without wincing........2007-09-01

"To Kill A Mockingbird" was made long before the feminist war on men. Warren Farrell once wrote that we have gone from "father knows best" to "daddies molest". This movie belongs to the "father knows best" category. If the movie had been produced during the Clinton administration, it would have featured Sally Field as a fearless feminist attorney fighting bigotry in a small southern town while single-handedly raising her two children after their drunken, abusive father had walked out on them. Boo Radley would have been institutionalized before he could get his perverted hands on Scout.
Fortunately we are spared all that. Instead we have Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, a widowed attorney who raises his children with kindness and compassion, aided by his black housekeeper Calpurnia. Atticus is given the job of defending a black man accused of raping a white woman. He braves the wrath of the town by giving the man an honest and competent defense and tries to get him acquitted. Meanwhile he defends his children by shooting a rabid dog (could Sally Field shoot a rabid dog?) and teaches them not to kill mockingbirds. In the end the unlikely hero of this movie turns out to be the strange and reclusive Boo Radley. If you are tired of movies that portray men as either morons, abusers, or gladiators, then this movie is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.......2007-08-23

As with many other people, I grew up on "To Kill a Mockingbird". I read the book in high school and quickly fell in love with the movie. So needless to say, twenty years later, the movie is still dear to my heart. What I love about this special edition is the wonderful interview with Gregory Peck on the second DVD. It solidified what I had always suspected - that this is one of the classiest people ever to hit Hollywood. Through the eyes of his wife, children, and adoring fans, this documentary allows you to get to know the real Gregory Peck, and I truly lament that the world has lost such a beautiful person. May his wonderful movies keep his memory alive forever.

An earnest and at times overblown story of a music teacher's impact on those around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is at times a genuinely touching drama in the vein of It's a Wonderful Life. Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) plays an aspiring composer and musician who takes a job teaching music at a local high school to save money while he composes his music. But when his wife (Glenne Headley) becomes pregnant, Glenn Holland must put aside his dreams and address the everyday realities of his life, from the melancholy and sometimes tragic fates of his students to the discovery that the son he cherishes is deaf. Building to a highly emotional climax in which the teacher sees the impact he's had on the world around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is a showcase for a fine Oscar-nominated performance by Dreyfuss and an engaging, heartwarming story. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars A movie you can watch 1000 times.......2007-09-09

I first saw this movie when I was about 10 and I still watch it all of the time! The reason I got this was for a new teacher to inspire him, but there are so many good things about this movie. The best part about it is that ten people can watch it and get ten different ideas of what the movie was about.

5 out of 5 stars A Teacher Is Born.......2007-09-02

This totally believable student/teacher drama grabs the viewer's attention from the beginning. Set in the turbulence of the 1960's it sweeps you through 30 years of this man's life (the real-life events that are woven through it are well done). It is the story of a man with good intentions, a teacher who is still learning himself. Glenn Holland (played by Richard Dreyfuss) is an aspiring composer who turns to teaching music at a local high school as a way to help make ends meet and still have time for his composing. His dream in life is to compose an opus that would one day make him famous. His wife (played by Glenne Headley) is loving, devoted and supportive wife. Things begin to change when she becomes pregnant and gives birth to their deaf child. Initially, Glenn has a great difficulty dealing with the fact that his son is deaf and gradually we see him pulling away from his family. For him, it is incomprehensible to have a child who is unable share his love of music. As we all do, Glenn has his faults, but he has a very big heart which keeps you tuned in to caring about him.
This movie is about real people in realistic situations. We see a struggling teacher, the wife who supports the struggling teacher through everything, a caring well intentioned principal, a very strict, rigid vice principal, and the students who can all be found in any high school anywhere in the U.S.. The one thing that makes this movie magical is the simplicity of it.
He's not a bad man, on the contrary, he's just a man. This is an inspirational movie that will stay with you long after you see it for the first time. It is the story of how you can discover new dreams as you pursue the old ones. Tried, true and timeless it is probably Richard Dreyfuss' greatest role yet. There are nothing but remarkable performances by this cast which includes Olympia Dukakis, William H. Macy, Jay Thomas, Alicia Witt just to name a few.
One thing that cannot be omitted from a review of this spectacularly moving film is the fantastic soundtrack. This PG movie should be required viewing for all music students (who knows, they might learn alot from it).

5 out of 5 stars Make a difference.......2007-07-12

This is my favorite movie. I have watched it over and over again. I find it to be a great source of inspiration for the average Joe. You can make a difference and not even know it as long as you do your best and help others.

Too bad the movie did not win Academy Awards. At least Richard Dreyfuss was nominated for his superior, inspiring acting in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "Just some kid I taught how to bang a drum....".......2007-07-10

This movie is Richard Dreyfuss' shining career moment. When we're looking back on his life, we're going to look at this film as the moment he truly became a star. He'd been in countless movies before and has starred in a number since, But this film... this film alone... cemented his name into the annuls of Hollywood History forever.

Mr. Holland (Dreyfuss) is an aspiring musician who decides to take on a job as a music teacher while he's waiting for his musician career to take off. Fast forward 30 some odd years. Teacher Mr. Holland is still working on what he feels is his greatest musical accomplishment. All along, he's helped others appreciate music and, in many ways, appreciate life through the appreciation of music.

Life struggles, including a deaf son, seem to always blind Mr. Holland to the symphony he's writing every day... in the hearts of the people around him.

"Mr. Holland might think himself a failure..." one former student laments near the end of the story... "and he would be wrong..."

I could write all day long and I couldn't sum up the moral to this story any better.

If you haven't seen this movie, you must see it. You're missing out on one of the best movies ever made!!!

4 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus.......2007-06-12

Without becoming breezy or overly sentimental, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' shows us the dilemma of many teachers. How does one juggle all of the piles of responsibility one is given, and how does one rise above the fray to achieve greatness? With many hurdles to overcome, Glenn Holland (in an extraordinary performance by Richard Dreyfuss) comes to Portland's Kennedy High School with the aspiration of employment filler with enough free time to compose his own music. Naive about the demands for extra-curriculars and student tutoring, Glenn, nevertheless, must reinvent the wheel and learn to accomodate his students by taking risks to win their love for music. Locking heads with the vice principal (played with perfect starchy officiousness by William Macy), he nearly loses his job and composure. At home his loving, understanding wife will stand by him, but plausibly loses patience when their own beloved son (who was born deaf) gets the shaft on some quality mentor time. Feeling his pain, we also are absorbed in the lives of key students (in fine early performances by Terrence Howard and [Forrest] Whitaker to name a couple). He gets reprieves with the football coach (Jay Thomas) who offers friendship and a spirited rivalry. With a rising starlet at his school and the soundtrack of their lives evolving to John Lennon, the poignancy of a man who has painted himself into a corner comes to roost.

'Mr. Holland's Opus' is as realistic as it is an emotional dead ringer. Admittedly, I prejudged this movie on the notion that it would be facile, cloying, or overly sentimental. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I didn't Laugh Once........2007-09-09

I asked for a bunch of comedies from the 60s & somehow this war satire landed in the pile. At least it was't one of those lame 50's propoganda films & had a somewhat interesting twist; this time an introverted American biggot nutcase is the bad guy, with his own president against him at every step, & Russua is the innocent victim. I couldn't get through more than 1/2 of it.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Sellers at his best!!.......2007-09-01

I have been used to Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies but this 1964 movie is WONDERFUL! One movie..three different roles. Dr. Strangelove has stood the test of time since its release. If memory serves me correct this movie was originally to be released in late 1963 but was delayed due to the assassination of President Kennedy. George C.Scott did a superb job in his role. The scene in which the President (Peter Sellers) calling his Russian counterpart was hilarious. Worth watching again!!

2 out of 5 stars funny story but bad timing.......2007-08-28

The first time that I saw this film, I thought it was the funniest.
but now, in this current time frame, it was sad, knowing that a war was
going on and our men were being killed for no good reason.

5 out of 5 stars Sellers at his best!.......2007-08-23

For years I have heard about this movie, and I finally bought it at a time when I had the opportunity to watch it. Wonderful!! Sellers is a comic genius, and the subtly of the laughs is the great thing in Dr. Strangelove.

5 out of 5 stars Better Each Time I See It.......2007-08-22

I have to admit that when I first saw this, it didn't actually make me stop worrying and love the bomb. However, almost everything about it is just perfect- from the gun battle in front of the Air Force's "Peace is our profession" sign to the Russian ambassador taking secret photos in the warroom after the end of the world to Dr. Strangelove's miraculous cure (when my 15 year old daughter recovered from her stroke, I had her rise from her wheelchair and say, "Mein Fuhrer, I can valk!"). Highly recommended as one of the greatest, if grimmest, comedies ever.

South African director Jamie Uys caught lightning in a bottle with The Gods Must Be Crazy--a Coke bottle, to be specific. This slaphappy collection of goofy pratfalls and culture-clash gags became an enormous international smash, and made a sort of star out of the Bushman selected to play the central role, the completely ingratiating N!Xau. He plays a man, unaware of white culture, who finds a Coca-Cola bottle in the Kalahari (dropped by a passing pilot) and promptly has his life turned around by this mystical object. The movie looks slipshod and even amateurish at times, yet its attitude is so bubbly it's hard to resist. Proving that physical comedy remains a true international language, millions of moviegoers around the world drank it up.

The Gods Must Be Crazy II (1989) returns N!Xau to the bizarre world of the white man, this time in a slicker plot (and a with a bigger budget) that, perhaps predictably, yields fewer real belly laughs than the first time around. Director Jamie Uys sticks to his cherished notions that tribesmen are wiser than civilized people, and that fast-motion comedy is inherently funny. The storyline begins with N!Xau's innocent Bushman searching for his lost children; he then gets sidetracked by subplots. The humor is basic, but in best silent-movie tradition Uys prepares his set-pieces with elaborate care, and he understands the value of the long-delayed pay-off. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever.......2007-08-20

This is one of the funniest, most entertaining movies I have ever seen and I am surprised it is not better known. With four plots interwoven the story is a work of genius. I shall be sharing these discs with all my friends and family.

4 out of 5 stars Comedy in the Kalahari desert.......2007-07-17

The DVD has two movies on it. One is the original "The Gods must be crazy" made in 1980 and a sequel made in 1989. I would give the original a 5 star and the second one a 3 star because the first one is very funny and second one is less so. Although the little boy in the second film is very cute.

Both films features a Bushman named Xi who lives in the Kalahari desert and his adventures with the outside world. With parallel stories of a western biologist and a professional woman's misadventures. Xi encountered modern civilization for the first time when he decided throw away an "evil" coke bottle (thrown from an airplane over the desert) to the end of earth. Xi, through his own experience, interpreted the modern world as "people with a lot of magical things" but are "quite illiterate" because they lack basic survival skills (tracking animals, finding water) and they "can't live without their magical things".

The Kalahari desert encompasses much of Botswana and is devoid of surface water except for a short rainy season. Despite its harshness, it hosts a range of animals including elephants, zebras and rhinos. The Kalahari people are one of oldest people in the world. The film portrays them as living peaceful lives without any knowledge of the surrounding world. That is no longer true. The Bushman were forcefully removed from their ancestral land and put in housing compounds by Botswana government in the name of providing better school access. Although their true motive is to open the area for mining. The Bushman have recently won law suits that would allow them to return. The "complete peace and harmony" of the Kalahari people shown in the film is threatened.

Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

The Lost World - Jurassic Park
In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn't seem to care that the pieces of this project don't add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). A complete bust.--Tom Keogh

Jurassic Park III
Surpassing expectations to qualify as an above-average sequel, Jurassic Park III is nothing more or less than a satisfying popcorn adventure. A little cheesier than the first two Jurassic blockbusters, it's a big B movie with big B-list stars (including Laura Dern, briefly reprising her Jurassic Park role), and eight years of advancing computer-generated-image technology give it a sharp edge over its predecessors. While adopting the jungle spirit of King Kong, the movie refines Michael Crichton's original premise, and its dinosaurs are even more realistic, their behavior more detailed, and their variety--including flying pteranodons and a new villain, the spinosaurus--more dazzling and threatening than ever. These advancements justify the sequel, and its contrived plot is just clever enough to span 90 minutes without wearing out its welcome.

Posing as wealthy tourists, an adventurous couple (William H. Macy, Téa Leoni) convince paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and his protégé (Allesandro Nivola) to act as tour guides on a flyover trip to Isla Sorna, the ill-fated "Site B" where all hell broke loose in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In truth, they're on a search-and-rescue mission to find their missing son (Trevor Morgan), and their plane crash is just the first of several enjoyably suspenseful sequences. Director Joe Johnston (October Sky) embraces the formulaic plot as a series of atmospheric set pieces, placing new and familiar dinosaurs in misty rainforests, fiery lakes, and mysterious valleys, turning JP3 into a thrill ride with impressive highlights (including a T. rex versus spinosaurus smack-down), adequate doses of wry humor (from the cowriters of Election), and an upbeat ending that's corny but appropriate, proving that the symptoms of sequelitis needn't be fatal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars For Jurassic Park Lovers.......2007-08-26

All three movies in one convenient box! I purchased this set to replace my combination of VHS and DVD singles that made up my personal copies. The prints are excellent and well worth the price and convenience of having them as a stand alone set.

4 out of 5 stars An All Time favourite!!!.......2007-08-24

Well, Well, Well!!! Jurassic Park 1,2 & 3. I have saw all of these movies on numerous occassions, however I decided to buy the boxset so I may watch them at my leisure. Jurassic Park ( all 3) deserve a 5star rating but I have a reason for giving them a 4star in this review which I will explain in a moment. Jurassic Park is the result of a brilliant mind combined with modern day technology and special effects. Its results are realistic dinosaurs in modern day and mans ability to get up close and personal with these critters. Tricerotops, brachiosaurs, T-Rex and an even more dangerous dinosaur than T-Rex whose name escapes me appears in the third. An ingenious idea of re-awakening a long extinct species comes true which I believe may have formed the basis of many a youngsters dream! In fact, it is the youngsters that cause me to give this review a 4star. The movies are geared towards all ages. What is needed is a realistic approach to what a dinosaur would do when the kids are NOT watching. Please, Please, Please make a Jurassic Park with an over 18's certificate. I bet the two kids would not escape the kitchen with the 3 raptors if it were for viewing only by an older audience!!! Even though such a movie may only exist in my dreams, for now JP 1,2&3 still amaze me. Thank you Stephen Spielberg, I cant wait to see what you come up with next!!!

5 out of 5 stars Dino-tastic!!!.......2007-08-11

These movies let us live out the fantasy that dinosaurs still roam the earth. Special effects, storyline and creativeness of the director/writer is most enjoyable. Recommend to all prehistoric reptile lovers. Acting is a bit strained and characters could have been developed more. It's like most of the attention to detail was on the dino's and special effects and actors were thrown in as backdrop/afterthought.

5 out of 5 stars Movie review.......2007-08-10

I am so happy I got this. It is a great deal for I love these movies

4 out of 5 stars A LIFETIME WORTH'S OF DINASOURS.......2007-07-31

The first film here is the real wonder of the trilogy. Up to 1993 we simply hadn't seen anything special effects like those before, mix that with Spielberg's hability for suspense and you have yourself a classic. To me Jurassic Park has aged pretty well even though we've seen so many CGI movies since it first came out, perhaps many more than we would have wanted to.
"Lost World" is a mixed bag, most of the excesive human characters range from mediocre (the leads) to plain indifferent (the villains) and they really kill the film despite (again) great and improved special effects. I absolutely hated the "rich people are all bad " and "child in jeopardy" routines and found the gymanstics vs. raptors scene the worst thing Spielberg has done/will ever do in his life. Also, after a while of the raptors missing the heros you start to doubt if they're really motivated on getting them or keep on "just missing" them. Ad a first half hour when absolutely nothing relevant occurs and you get the idea what kind of sequel this is. Perhaps the problem is what Spielberg claims in the "making of" regarding the movie being born out of "popular demand", in other words, simply money.
I liked the third movie a lot more than I expected even though the raptors keep on miraculosly missing the leads. At the end of the movie you come to realize Sam Neil is a lot more capable on carrying this kind of movie by himself than Jeff Goldblum
I recently read they'r gearing up for Jurassic Park IV for 2008, personally after this trilogy and the new King Kong I feel I've had plenty of dinasours for a lifetime.
