Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the best filmed version of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, showcasing Holmes's dazzling brilliance without ignoring his unnerving intensity or drug dependencies. First aired on Britain's Granada Television in 1984, the series offered perfect casting (David Burke, replaced later in the run by Edward Hardwicke, played Dr. Watson as Holmes's sturdy companion and chronicler rather than as a buffoon), marvelous period music by Patrick Gowers, and a running time of almost an hour per story, which allowed superior detail and faithfulness to the original source.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes marked the beginning of the long-running series. Highlights of these 13 episodes include "A Scandal in Bohemia," which introduces Irene Adler (Gayle Hunnicutt), whom Holmes uncharacteristically describes as having "a face a man might die for"; the chilling locked-room mystery "The Speckled Band"; the introduction of Sherlock's brother Mycroft (Charles Gray) in "The Greek Interpreter"; and "The Final Problem," in which Holmes confronts his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty (Eric Porter) at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The five-disc boxed set is a great bargain compared to previous VHS releases, although bonus features are limited to English subtitles and galleries of Sidney Paget's famous illustrations. The series would continue on Granada with The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes as well as the stand-alone treatments of The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy Brett.......2007-09-15

Noone since Basil Rathbone has captured the true essence of Sherlock Holmes but, now, we have Jeremy Brett's interpretation. He is simply superb! I have watched each program many times and they never fail to entertain me.

The death of Mr. Brett was such a great loss but, thankfully, we can witness his stellar performances through the magic of DVD.

His attention to detail will be noted, especially by those of us who have read the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

5 out of 5 stars what can i say. its awesome.......2007-08-24

For two months we lived on Sherlock Holmes. But the best surprise was the actors are still alive and acting. The intervew with the two men cheered us up big time and we hope to see more new Holmes and Watson DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes.......2007-08-16

Jeremy Brett has always brought his unique perspective to the beloved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle detective. These episodes are done well and bring that character to live vividly as you watch mesmerized by Holmes & Dr. Watson as they solve yet another mystery. Supporting casts is excellent and the period well preserved.

4 out of 5 stars Jeremy Brett -- The Best Sherlock Holmes.......2007-07-26

The production is excellent. I'm always impressed by the condition of horses and carriages. Although I prefer the more recent Dr. Watson, the characters are well done.
The "short story" form of this collection is not as enticing as a full-length mystery.
So far, I have not been successful at getting the first DVD to play. Others, that I've had a chance to see, have played easily.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-07-06

My husband is a Sherlock Holmes fan and used to watch this series years ago. I gave him this collection for Father's Day, and he was delighted! We have loved watching the episodes and are looking forward to getting more. It's a definite must have item for anyone who enjoys Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett and Company are wonderful!

The six episodes of The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes continue Granda Television's excellent series starring Jeremy Brett as as the ideal incarnation of Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional hero, while Edward Hardwicke brings stellar support as the courageous, good-hearted Dr. Watson. The suspense is strong and the acting superb in The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax. Watson is taking a holiday in the English countryside, where he meets the charming Lady Frances and then worries after she vanishes from sight. As in The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes puts Watson on the case and instructs him from afar. In The Problem of Thor Bridge, Holmes is approached by an American senator (Daniel Massey, Brett's one-time, real-life brother-in-law) to clear the name of a governess in his employ, the lady having been accused of murdering the senator's wife on his estate and leaving her body on Thor Bridge. The solution is among the most complex and satisfying of the Great Detective's career.

Watson's proclivities toward gambling on horses open the door to the sprawling mystery The Shoscombe Old Place, which finds a famous playboy and equestrian, Sir Robert Norberton (Robin Ellis), in multiple jeopardy. In Boscombe Valley Mystery, Holmes and Watson are brought into an investigation of the murder of a farmer, whose body is found in the woods adjoining land owned by a wealthy property magnate. Holmes's investigation pulls the search in a wide direction, but the revelations are no less ghastly.

In the next story, based on one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's personal favorites from his Holmes canon, Sir James Damery approaches Holmes with a special request from an "illustrious client" (read: King Edward) to intercede in the marriage of an Austrian nobleman who almost certainly murdered his first wife. When Holmes is himself the object of a murderous attack; an outraged Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) has to channel his thoughts of revenge into a bit of undercover work on behalf of the detective.

Finally, Holmes and Watson tackle one of their strangest cases in The Creeping Man, which borders on science fiction. The Great Detective meets an eminent, aging physiologist who has been behaving oddly of late, but the greater mystery concerns who or what may be behind the nocturnal appearances of an ape-like figure that moves rapidly through trees, terrifying the locals. Holmes's pursuit of the solution leads to a stunning revelation in this taut and imaginative thriller that Edgar Allen Poe himself might have appreciated. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Who is Holmes?.......2007-08-06

Perhaps Basil Rathbone was the quintessential Holmes for the 1930s and '40s, but, I believe that Jeremy Brett will be noted in the history of video productions as the best of the best Holmes. Quixotic, mercurial in temperment, a slight hint of mental aberation combined with obsessive compulsiveness, and a mysoginistic bent - all are portrayed to perfection.

With outstanding technical direction and cinematography, the films are a feast for the eyes. London of the 1890's, the height of the Victorian era, is shown in it's rigid class structure - slendor at the top, squalor at the bottom - and Holmes gleefully burrowing through it all to find the culprit.

Refreshingly astute after the portayal as a bumbling, if kindly, semi-idiot by Nigel Bruce, David Burke and, later, Edward Hardwicke, portray Holmes' able companion, Dr. Watson, as thoughtful, concerned, able and an intelligent friend.

I have been watching the Granada films for over 20 years and Holmes movies for over 50 (Could it be that long?). Holmes movies have always been good to watch. Brett makes them great to watch. His passing closed a wonderful, and hard to match, chapter in the book of Holmes portrayals.

Watch all of the Granada Holmes films and revel in the excitement, pagentry, and sheer enjoyment of excellence.

4 out of 5 stars A great Sherlock film.......2007-07-10

I have seen other Sherlock Holmes films with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. I enjoyed this collection very much. One of my favorite stories is the problem of Thor bridge. Brett does some of his best acting as the sleuth in this movie. And I an hoping that I can own more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must-have for all the Sherlock's fans out there.......2007-03-28

You must watch it. As a matter of fact, you must watch all the DVDs in the series. I love the performation of Jeremy. He sometimes can be a little too dramatic. Nevertheless he was the only guy who really captured the essence of being Sherlock Holmes. The maker of the series really put a lot of efforts in. You can tell by the elegant design of the rooms and costumes. Even the smallest detail was paid attention to.

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock!.......2007-02-23

This set makes my Sherlock collection complete, that is, the TV series starring the late Jeremy Brett. Brett was the consummate Sherlock Holmes. Whenever I read anything Sherlockian, I visualize Jeremy Brett. I've seen all of the series multiple times on TV, but never get tired of re-watching any of the shows.

3 out of 5 stars Low audio signal.......2007-01-10

This is great stuff. I bought all of the available Sherlock Holmes DVDs starring Jeremy Brett. However, on this particular one (i.e., the whole set of DVDs in this particular set), and only on this particular one, the audio signal is very low. On my Legacy FOCUS speakers bi-amped at 300 watts rms per side and with the preamp's volume turned all the way up I could hear the dialog. All the other Jeremy Brett DVD sets are just fine. Otherwise the picture quality and everything else is just fine.

5 out of 5 stars FAN-TASATIC.......2007-07-31

Basil Rathbone really is the perfect Sherlock Holmes. Nigel Bruce is well.. a lot stupider than he was in the books..but he was good too. All 14 of the movies are suspenseful, and exciting, and Rathbone portrays Sherlock Holmes excellently. Except for the Hound of the Baskervilles The movies take place in the 1940's during the WW2 era (The books had a victorian theme) but somehow still seem to have a bit of an old-world theme. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-13

This is a marvellous set of all 14 films that Rathbone and Bruce made together.

The remastering is excellent and the difference is quite dramtic compared with some other versions of the same films that I have. Recently I made a direct comparison between the two versions of "Terror By Night" and the improvement is dramatic.

As previous reviewers have said Rathbone and Bruce work very well together and Dr Watson has some wonderfully funny lines, which if not Conan Doyles original lines, still work very well nevertheless. Some of the acting is occasionally a bit wooden, and sometimes the plots are a bit contrived (again I don't think this is Conan Doyles fault) but even so these are classic films regardless.

This set makes all previous boxed sets of Rathbone and Bruce (of which I own one) completely redundant. Buy this one!!

4 out of 5 stars A fun collection.......2007-04-16

The plots are absurd, the dialogue is corny, and the stories are far astray from the works of Conan Doyle. Dr. Watson is totally out of character.

But I love 'em all! Very entertaining!! Basil Rathbone is the perfect Sherlock Holmes. Nigel Bruce is a bumbling, entertaining and lovable Dr. Watson. Mary Gordon is a very believable Mrs. Hudson.

Yes, the packaging is. . . well. . . cheap. But the films have been beautifully restored, (believe me, I know - I saw the originals. . . yikes!), and watching them is just plain fun.

If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, or a Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce fan, you will enjoy this collection!

Granada Television followed The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with The Return of Sherlock Holmes, 11 more episodes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective played by Jeremy Brett. After his apparent demise at the hands of Professor Moriarty, Holmes is resurrected in "The Empty House." Brett is outstanding as the famed sleuth, whose return from what Sherlockians call the Great Hiatus is challenged by one of Moriarty's most murderous lieutenants (Patrick Allen), already a killer on the run in London. "The Abbey Grange," a bloody mystery with significant moral and ethical implications, was also an early episode in the new onscreen association of Brett and Edward Hardwicke (who ably replaced the departed David Burke as Dr. Watson), and the two actors seem as perfectly meshed as their allied characters. Arguably the most entertaining and satisfying episode from the entire series, "The Second Stain" finds Holmes facing intertwining problems, each with very different consequences. The look of epiphany on Brett's face when the ever-clueless Inspector Lestrade (Colin Jeavons) tells Holmes about an odd detail in the murder victim's home is enormous fun.

Counselor Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation--or rather actress Marina Sirtis--is part of the cast of "The Six Napoleons," a wild mystery that suggests that a madman with a grudge against Napoleon Bonaparte is smashing clay busts of his likeness all over London. "The Priory School," one of the most interesting stories from Doyle's Holmes canon, makes for a particularly taut and exciting episode in which Holmes and Watson are summoned by the desperate founder of an exclusive prep school for boys to locate the missing son of a duke. An extreme rarity in the Holmes canon, a policeman of real competence named Inspector Baynes (Freddie Jones), is also on the case in "Wisteria Lodge," making this tale all the more interesting for Holmes fans interested in comparing and contrasting investigative styles. "The Devil's Foot" finds Watson pressuring the exhausted sleuth into joining him on a vacation on the Cornish coast. Instead of relaxation, however, Holmes and Watson encounter one of the most horrifying multiple murders they have yet come across.

Doyle caught a fair amount of flak for getting a lot of details wrong in "Silver Blaze," a story about the training and racing of horses. Nevertheless, it is one of his most popular yarns and makes a fine basis for a keen mystery with one of Doyle's most inventive solutions. A strong story with some of the sleuth's most impressive investigatory work, "The Bruce Partington Plans" also saw the return of Mycroft Holmes (Charles Gray), brother of the Great Detective and indispensable repository of government business. Holmes's methodical approach to the arcane problem in "The Musgrave Ritual" is a lot of fun, and Brett and Hardwicke seem to be having a particularly good time outdoors, pursuing the solution under a bit of sunshine. "The Man with the Twisted Lip" is one of the most ingenious of the Holmes stories, satisfying from beginning to end, with a witty conclusion and unexpected moral about class pressures. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A must for Holmes Lovers.......2007-09-07

This set is a must for all Holmes lovers. Whether or not you think Jeremy Brett is the best Holmes ever (many do; I found his eccentric mannerisms an acquired taste), this series offers hours of viewing pleasure and does not have a single overlap episode with the other sets in the series, making it complete unto itself and a "must have." If you're not a Holmes fan, consider it as a gift for someone who is!

5 out of 5 stars Brett is the definitive Holmes.......2007-07-17

There's not much to add to the superlatives that seem to dominate these comments -- only to assure every Sherlock Holmes fan out there that these DVDs are a worthwhile investment. The atmosphere of Holmes' London and the rooms on Baker Street is perfectly captured through the great period details, sets, costumes, and haunting music. There are some weaknesses, including some rather arbitrary and often unnecessary alterations from the original source material (though it's fun to sit with a copy of the stories themselves and page through after each episode to find the discrepancies). Also, some of them seem to drag out at times, as the transfer from short story to hour-long program doesn't always work seamlessly, and every now and then there's a reminder of some of the weaker production values of the 80s (for example the rather comical effects of Holmes' African root-drug-induced hallucination in "The Devil's Foot").

But Jeremy Brett's masterful performances in just about every episode are worth sitting through all of it. Of all the great Holmes actors, he seems to have best captured the character's kineticism and restlessness -- the sense of a raging mind always churning beneath the stern veneer. Great stuff; highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-06-27

Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are superbly compelling in their roles. It matters not if you know every story and every line of dialogue by heart - these stories never fail to engross, and transport you to another time and place!

5 out of 5 stars "It's devilish, Mr. Holmes, devilish!" .......2007-06-08

There is no doubt that this DVD collection is essential viewing for any Sherlock Holmes enthusiast. For me, like many people out there, Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Holmes have always been one. I first discovered the dark and dangerous world of Holmes and Watson as a child during the mid to late-eighties, when Brett and Hardwicke were brilliantly bringing to life the most famous duo in literary history on PBS. Then I did not see these programs for many years, but to have them come out on DVD is long overdue. Just hearing the haunting opening bars of the period music composed for this landmark series by Patrick Gowers was enough to put a mischievous smile on my face!
This collection features many of the detective's greatest exploits, including "The Empty House," which features the emotional reunion of Holmes and Watson in 1894, and also one of my very favorite tales, "The Devil's Foot," which has one of the most intriguing plots in the Canon. The film sequence when Holmes and Watson experiment with the deadly African root powder is extraordinary, especially when Holmes wakes from his horrifying hallucination and cries out to his companion, "John!" As any Sherlockian knows, this line does not appear in the original story, but Brett says it with such conviction and emotion that it doesn't really matter. Nor can one forget Holmes' unforgettable encounter with Leon Sterndale:
"How do you know that?"
"I followed you."
"I saw no one."
"That is what you may expect to see when I follow you."

Equally powerful is the touching scene when Holmes literally cracks open the case of the Six Napoleons in front of Watson and Inspector Lestrade.

"Well," said Lestrade, "I've seen you handle a good many
cases, Mr. Holmes, but I don't know that I ever knew a more
workmanlike one than that. We're not jealous of you at Scotland
Yard. No, sir, we are very proud of you, and if you come down
to-morrow, there's not a man, from the oldest inspector to the
youngest constable, who wouldn't be glad to shake you by the
hand."
"Thank you!" said Holmes. "Thank you!" and as he turned
away, it seemed to me that he was more nearly moved by the
softer human emotions than I had ever seen him."

To watch Brett choke up during this scene is wonderful.
These episodes remain quite faithful to the stories for the most part, but take a little artistic license at times, for instance in "Wisteria Lodge" and also the "Bruce-Partington Plans". The end of the atmospheric "Priory School" features a very dramatic scene which totally deviates from the original tale, but in fact may be an improvement! One of the extra features is a very enlightening commentary with director John Madden and John Stuart Davies about how they made "The Priory School." The interview with Edward Hardwicke on disc 1 is also fascinating. As a whole, these are the finest and most satisfying film versions of the Canon ever produced or ever likely to be. If you read the original stories as you watch these episodes, as I have done, you'll discover much of the dialogue is taken straight from the horse's mouth! (Sorry about the pun, but I just watched "Silver Blaze"!) So do yourself a huge favor, and get this set today. These dvds will offer countless hours of enjoyment and inspired deduction. The game is afoot!

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-05-07

The discs are securely cased. Reproduction is very good, except for a bit of wavy introductory music on one disc. However, this does not affect the video. I consider the set a good purchase.
