Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh

This DVD is flwed.......2007-09-01
Like many of you, this is one of my favorite movies of all times. I bought the DVD a couple of years ago, and although it wasn't a 'perfect' copy, it was suitable for my needs. Missing was the overture, color timing, and a number a 'jittering scenes' probably due to the conversion to DVD process. The extra 'behind the scenes' feature is well worth the price of the DVD, however, if you are looking for perfection- you will not find it here. Last week, 8/25/07, Turner Classic Movies Cable Channel did present the "PERFECT" COPY. Why this copy didn't make it to the DVD, I would like to know. This had the overture, intermission & exit music- along with all of the extra scenes that had been chopped out of the movie years ago. Colors in the opening credits were vibrant and changes as when presented in the theater- and is in Wide Screen. And although this was shown on the Cinerama Screens, it was not filmed in Cinerama- but in Ultra-Panavision (which is a different film technology altogether). I 'DVR"ed this copy and plan to transfer it to a DVD soon. If you love this movies as an event, as much as I, make sure you DVR this movie the next time it's on Turner Classic Movies. This is the 2nd time I've seen it so they probably run it again. Please check out this link for more info- and scrool down to VERSIONS:

Glad it's Mad.......2007-08-10
If it isn't already, this is certainly destined to be a cult film.
Some of my favorite scenes:
Jerry Lewis running over Spencer Tracy's hat. Lewis' facial expressions are a delight.
Phil Silvers waving bye-bye in the rear view mirror to Jonathan Winters
after ditching him in the desert.
Jonathan Winters wrecking the service station.
A heavily hung-over Jim Backus on the pool table as Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett try to revive him.
And of course, beatniks Dick Shawn and the dead-pan Barrie Chase shakin'
it up to the Shirelles' kooky lyrics:
"Got a baby who can give me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
I call him Ice Cream Joe,
he is the most delicious boy I know,
everytime his tasty lips are kissing mine,
he gives me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
I just love him so,
he's my confectionary Ice Cream Joe,
everytime I kiss him I feel mighty fine,
I love his 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
pineapple fruit - coconut and banana, some of the fruit,
chocolate too, and tell him right that when we kiss,
he give me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutty best..."
A truly Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad scene. Gotta love it!
It's a funny funny funny funny movie.......2007-08-09
Think of a huge ensemble of the major comics of the day, throw in Spencer Tracy (in his last - a comical - role), situations that defy the imagination and you've got a great comedy. Never a dull moment and you get to see where some of the greats of the genre came from.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad... It's a Must... !.......2007-08-04
Although there are a few excellent Comedies made in the fifties and sixties, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" is unbeatable, unforgettable and a remarkable movie production identifying the many traditional American life and family values besides those not so respectable ones. Behavior, Ambition, Consciousness, Cheat & Trick... they are all there. A very funny story made in a very intelligent way. Does it sound too serious? Couldn't be so easy and amusing, yet fast going with something new and unexpected at every second scene!
Undoubtless my favorite movie ever!
Love the laughs, but I agree the format needs improvement.......2007-08-01
I agree with everyone here, this is one of the funniest movies ever made. I'm with the other guy who said there was originally 192 minutes in the 1963 premiere - and the aspect ratio was 2.76:1. I have never seen a video release that was ever done correctly, with this running length and aspect ratio. MGM, let's do a full-on correct release finally of this great classic, with every frame restored and packed with special features. Maybe even a featurette on Cinerama and the overall history of widescreen movies would be a good addition on Disc 2. Hey fellow fans, how do we get a letter-writing campaign started at MGM? It worked for Superman II!

Dick Tracy cartoon series.......2007-01-04
Excellent packaging and condition of prints. (Would have liked to have the episodes listed in a booklet, as there were 130, and the only way to know what was where was put each disk in and go through tedious rounds of menues).
However, I was very pleased to see all the episodes intact, including full begin themes, (unlike the disappointing releases of Batfink without its begin song).
Well worth buying for fans of Dick Tracy. See all the famous villains, and the rotating cast of Tracy's support characters: GoGo Gomez, Hemlock Holmes, Jo Jitsu, Heap O'Callory etc.
Great stuff
Too Long Ago.......2006-11-03
This was a nostalgia buy ~ I remember loving these as a kid, and when I read details about the product I would not have appreciated back then ~ such as Everett Sloan was the voice of Tracy ~ I had to get it. Fortunately I found a "fell off the truck" copy on eBay for less than half price, because upon playing the first disc I realized that these are pretty much for kids only. Aside from a few adult references (such as using a Peter Lorre-like voice for Flattop) these are not very clever, and definitely do not hold up as adult entertainment by any stretch of the imagination. I guess I was fooled by my own enjoyment of many great reprints of the original Tracy strip (which I see is now coming out in new editions ~ look elsewhere on Amazon) but after 3 of these cartoons I knew I was going to be trading this one in at Coconuts. Better stick to Volume 4 of Looney Tunes, which appears to have quite a few ESSENTIAL Bugs Bunny features this time.
Another blast of the past!.......2006-10-14
I remember a long time ago when my mom rented these cartoons on video for me back in the early 1990s. These cartoons have been in my mind for a very long time. Now that they are on dvd it,s a great blast of the past. All the cartoons are entertaining and funny too. Even though I don,t see the crimestopper tips the cartoons are still good as can be.
Wow, we kids were sure easy to please!.......2006-10-12
When I saw this DVD set, I just had to pick it up for nostalgia sake. One reviewer was a bit harsh but admitted that they did not see the show when originally aired in the 60's. What's the saying? Sometimes you "just had to be there" in order to find appeal in DVD releases of old TV shows such as this. As is often the case it is far more about simple nostalgia and fond recollections than perceived quality.
As a kid in the 60's, the "Dick Tracy Show" was a favorite and after popping in the first disc and seeing that high overhead street scene with the traffic parting and that music...a flood of memories came back. Of course looking at it now with my adult eye it was pretty cheesy stuff. I had totally forgotten that Dick Tracy doesn't really do anything other than hand off the assignments in the opening scene and check in at the end. I wonder why? Is it that Tracy was drawn too seriously and wasn't meant to be funny and therefore let his cartoon-like "crime-busting pals" take over? Funny, as an adult, and why I would even notice such things, I found myself picking up mistakes, errors or things that don't make sense. Geez, it's a cartoon, but I noticed that there is no nameplate on Tracy's desk when facing him but with the angle from behind it suddenly appears...and the nameplate is facing him! Things like this only add to the appeal. OK, this is sad. What's next? I'm going to notice Deputy Dog and Yogi Bear don't have pants on...or the fact that they talk?
Anyway, though I am not sure I can sit through all 130 episodes, it is a hoot to catch up with ol' Mumbles, Flattop and Pruneface as well as GoGo Gomez, Joe Jitsu and of course, Heap O'Callory! Get it? A rather plump cop named "Heap O'Callory". It went over my head as a kid and I just made the connection watching it as an adult.
Good fun if you grew up watching this show or if you have young kids in the house. For me, since the entire series is on one attractively priced DVD set, it was an easy choice.
I applaud the release...........2006-10-07
It is GREAT to have these and I love the original cartoons un-edited and uncut! It appears that CLASSIC MEDIA made a small goof though. The back cover says it includes Tracy's CRIME STOPPER TIPS (The short inbetween segments from the original show) BUT unless they are a REALLY well hidden EASTER EGG, I haven't been able to find them. Other than that, I am glad this set was released Un-Censored!

Serial Killers.......2007-03-08
One of many newspaper comic strips to be serialized for the big screen, Terry and the Pirates brings Milt Caniff's characters to blazing B movie life. As with most releases from VCI (The Phantom, The Green Archer, et al) no effort has been made to improve the quality of obviously ancient prints; these DVDs offer you a chance to see classic material at about the quality you'd get from you local terrestrial TV station. A trip down (faded) memory lane, these are worth the money, but keep your expectations, like the price, low.
what might of been.......2005-10-04
there was potential...republic could have done things with this one...the lack of a credible villain, Terry's whininess, the cheesy tiger men, and I am afraid this was typical of the studio...cliffhangers were decent...but, not good enough...
"Milton Caniff's creation comes to the serial world ~ Terry & the Pirates".......2005-09-06
VCI Entertainment and Columbia Pictures present "Terry and the Pirates" (1940), featuring a 15 thrilling chapter serial based upon the famous Milton Caniff cartoon strip...15 Chapters of the favorite newspaper feature satisfying several million fans comes to the DVD world...jungle action mixed with hair breadth escapes ending each episode.
Under director James W. Horne with a fine cast which include William Tracy as Terry Lee, Granville Owen (aka Jeff York) as Pat Ryan, Joyce Bryant as Normandie Drake, Allen Jung as Connie, Victor DeCamp as Big Stoop, Sheila Darcy as The Dragon Lady, Dick Curtis (great Columbia Picture stock player of 100 films) as Master Fang, J. Paul Jones as Dr. Herbert Lee, Forrest Taylor as Mr. Drake and Jack Ingram (a favorite in the bad guys department) as Stanton the thug leader...writing credits include Milton Caniff and Mark Layton.
Tracy who plays a young Terry along with Ryan go up river in a infested jungle with plenty of dangers...searching for a treasure that has been hidden from the civilized world...plenty of adventure turns up with Dick Curtis as Fang as the mysterious and evil Oriental villain...less we forget Dragon Lady, the Tiger Men and a mad gorilla at large...the Saturday Matinee crowd would most certainly be sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for the next chapter...Charlie King (we called him "Blackie" in the B-Western) appears with other Columbia Picture extras that you've seen in many serials and B-Westerns...this is sort of an early "Indiana Jones", complete with campy humor that will keep you in stitches along with dangerous and thrilling Milton Caniff characters that you enjoyed decades from the comic strip.

Total Time: 2-DVD-Set ~ VCI Entertainment 8322 ~ (6/29/2004)
Directed by James Horne, so serial fans know what to expect!.......2004-11-05
This adaptation of Milton Caniff's comic strip is a jungle serial produced by Columbia in 1940. William Tracy plays teenage Terry like radio's hapless Henry Aldrich, complete with brash confidence and adolescent voice. Granville Owen is one of the better serial heroes, playing Terry's adult protector with firm jaw and resolute manner.
Director James Horne, best known for his Laurel & Hardy comedies, throws in some noteworthy touches, most of them on the silly side. Horne instructs Sheila Darcy, playing a tribal queen, to over-emphasize her lines like a third-grader in a class play (thankfully she drops the stilted delivery later on). John Ince also chews some scenery as the queen's high priest. Most of the cast members are invited by Horne to slice a little ham here and there, and they respond with enthusiasm: listen for Tracy's ludicrously high-pitched shriek of terror, and for cowboy-villain Dick Curtis (of all people) and his incredible dialect as an Oriental warlord named Fang! Horne even adds comic business to some of the fight scenes (Tracy subdues a combatant by robbing him of his pants; Owen slugs someone and hurts his fist). And it's fun to watch a serial hero actually being ANNOYED by his sidekick for once. When Tracy says something dumb, the disgusted Owen repeats the remark in true Oliver Hardy style!
To Horne's credit, he stages the cliffhanging perils nicely and employs some very effective silent-serial technique (like a memorable shot of a hand reaching up from the floor, desperately groping for the switch that will stop a death trap). Also, some serials have the characters walking away from calamity wihout batting an eye, but Horne allows the heroes to be visibly shaken and unsteady after surviving the more serious perils. This may not be one of the best adventure serials of all time, but between the thrill scenes and the dopey scenes there's plenty to hold the attention.
VCI transferred this film to video just in the nick of time; there are scattered instances of blemishes and slight decomposition. The decay totally ruined the soundtrack of one episode, so VCI recreated the Chapter 5 track with appropriate music and re-enacted dialogue (the actors imitating William Tracy and William Irving are right on the money!). Overall, the picture and sound are very good, especially considering the rarity of the subject.
As a bonus, the DVD contains episode #1 of the "Terry and the Pirates" TV series from 1952. The emphasis on adventure and international intrigue reminded this viewer of a first-season "Superman" show (some of the music here was actually used in the "Superman" series). William Tracy appears in this, too -- now he's Terry's co-pilot and sidekick.
Like 'em or leave 'em, it's good to see these Columbia serials on DVD.
WELL I THINK YOU'RE WRONG, R.B. MERHAR.......2004-08-18
IN THIS 15-CHAPTER SERIAL, TERRY AND HIS FRIENDS ARRIVE IN THE FAR EAST ON A MISSION FOR SOME HIDDEN GOLD. ALONG THE WAY, THEY MUST FACE THE DRAGON LADY AND THE FANG. ALL 15 CHAPTERS OF THIS SERIAL WERE ENTERTAINING AND ACTION-PACKED. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS SERIAL. GET THIS ONE NOW. DON'T LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEW.

Wonderful Movie but DVD is DREADFUL! Don't Buy this!.......2007-04-28
How to ruin a perfectly marvelous movie? Make a poor quality DVD. The picture is so washed out most details are lost and the sound so low I had to turn up the volume to 99 just to hear it whisper. THIS DVD IS VERY BAD! Please just record this gem the next time it comes on TCM and save your money. It is a shame such a wonderful film has been treated in such a poor manner.
Disappointed.......2007-04-14
The first time I saw this movie, it was on TV. I remembered enjoying it very much. This led to my purchasing the DVD. I was, however, very disappointed in the DVD. The quality of the recording was so bad I gave up half way through the movie. The picture quality was poor and the sound was even worse. It was difficult to understand the dialogue. I am sorry to report this. I was hoping for so much more.
A sequel that retains the freshness of the original..........2006-12-31
Detailing the life of the newlyweds (does he really love her?) and the traumas attendant upon the birth of the first baby, "Father's Little Dividend" is a movie as cozy and as dependent on little shocks of recognition as its predecessor, "Father of the Bride." Guided with the Minnelli grace, the movie is that rare thing--a sequel that retains the freshness of the original...
These two movies are something of a curiosity in Taylor's career... It wasn't too often that Liz got the chance to play a completely average young lady, the charming girl next door rather than the rich and unattainable beauty...
In "Cynthia" or "A Date with Judy," she was someone set apart from the prom crowd... Here, as bride-to-be or as eager wife and mother, she's a healthy, normal young woman, something of a forerunner to Elinor Donahue's bright, bubbly Betty of "Father Knows Best."
Once again, Spencer Tracy stole the picture as he came to face the fact of grandfatherhood...
Extremely Poor Quality DVD.......2006-12-10
I love this movie. I have the VHS version and wanted it on DVD. However, I will be keeping my VHS. This copy is dreadful. It is unviewable. I will never buy from Alpha Video again.

3 Great Movies on 1 DVD. Star Power, Exciting Genre with Extras on each DVD.
Customer Reviews:
Dick Tracy .......2004-10-19
(...) the three films and a scant extras on CLASSIC DICK TRACY make it a tremendous value.
The films:
Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome - Boris Karloff plays Gruesome, who robs banks and likes to incinerate his victims.
Dick Tracy vs. Cueball - Dick Wessel plays Cueball, who steals diamonds and likes to strangle his victims with a leather strap.
Dick Tracy's Dilemma - Jack Lambert plays The Claw, who steals furs and likes to hack his victims with the hook at the end of his right arm.
The extras: Short text biographies of Boris Karloff and Dick Tracy creator Chester Gould, a very short selected Karloff filmography, and a harmless page or two of Dick Tracy trivia.
"Gruesome" and "Dilemma" star Ralph Byrd as Tracy, a role his square jaw suggests he was born to play. Morgan Conway plays the super cop in "Cueball." Byrd played Tracy in an earlier serial, while Conway was the first to play him in a movie.
These short films were produced by RKO Radio Studios, which gave us some of the greatest psychological crime dramas in history. The production values, cinematography, and supporting cast are all above average for these quickly produced low budget films.
RKO gilded its reputation by presenting films that probed the twisted psychology or its heroes and villains. The beauty of formulaic entries like these Dick Tracy movies is that they avoid that approach entirely. The Bad Guy is wired to receive signals from nothing higher than his reptile brain. Gruesome, Cueball, and the Claw are simply evil, all greedy appetite with a well-honed fight-or-flight response. They have no depth at all. The short biography on Gould tells us that he wrote Tracy in reaction to the "glamorized" gangsters of the 1930s. He wanted to give the public a Good Guy to root for. Ergo Dick Tracy, a vacant trenchcoat and fedora who's hardwired to that attic space in the brain that controls our dedication to Justice and fighting Evil. Beyond canceling dinner dates with sweetheart Tess Trueheart (a running gag throughout all the movies, one which wore thin pretty quick) and chasing criminals, there isn't much to Tracy's personality. The criminals may have been drained of their glitz, but they're still a lot more interesting than the hero.
I enjoyed all these movies immensely. I'm not all that familiar with Dick Tracy, but I imagine we have Gould to thank for having his villains hang out with characters like Filthy Flora in such colorfully named dives as The Hanging Noose and the Dripping Dagger. Vitamins Flintheart, a bad and annoyingly flamboyant actor, and Tracy sidekick, seems a Gould character as well. The transfer seems uniformly well done. Things stay in focus and there's no buzzing on the soundtrack. Better yet, the transfer prints were in very good shape, considering their age. Best of all, these pleasant films are suitable for all ages.
Don't bother.......2002-12-25
The collection of Dick Tracy movies offered by the Roan Group is much better, and the Roan DVDs offer all of the movies on two discs. This set is not worth spending your money on. You will pay a lot more for a lot less by buying this.
Dick Tracy Bonanza.......2001-11-13
In 1945, the world beheld Dick Tracy, a popular comic strip, materialize to screen. The first film (which is not in this collection), was entertaining, but lacked the excitment, and the panache of the comic strip.
RKO Radio Pictures (it's distributar), realized this, and started to make pictures that were almost identical to the beloved comic strip.
"Dick Tracy Meets Cueball", was in the greatest Gould tradition. For one, Morgan Conway is just the image of good old Dick, and the story, is amazingly entertaining.
The others were exellent too, and here are the ratings and casts for each of them:

Product Description
Dick Tracy is a television classics from the 1950's. Dick Tracy the famous detective is faced with crimes and murder which he must solve. 90 Mins runtime, B&W, Digitally Remastered.
Customer Reviews:
Dick Tracy.......2004-11-04
Containing three "classic" episodes from the 1950-51 television series "Dick Tracy," DICK TRACY is for completists or Tracy-philes only. Ralph Byrd, who'd played Tracy in serials and b-movies since 1937, stars as the square-jawed detective.
The three episodes are "Dick Tracy Meets Flattop," "Dick Tracy Versus Heels Beels," and "Hi-Jack." The bad guys, grotesque caricatures in Chester Gould's comic strips, are here simply a little odd. The original Flattop had a very wide, flat topped head. In this episode he wears an umbrella beret. Heels Beels is a short thug who hides stolen jewels in the hollow heels of his platform shoes. A really diminutive fellow in the strips, here he looks like Whitey from the Dead-End Kids. Short, but not grotesquely so. Hi-Jack steals cars. Yawn.
These episodes were filmed on cheap film stock by a director who apparently didn't believe in wasting film on a second take. The stories are talky, the action stilted, the stories' are silly. Some of the transfers look pretty rough. For whatever reason the three episodes are all missing end credits, so good luck figuring out who's playing the villains and secondary characters. The runtime information on the cover is a little misleading as well. It's not "approx. 90 mins." Rather it's closer to 70 minutes, each episode clocking out at about 22 minutes.
Fans of Ralph Byrd's Dick Tracy might get a kick out of this. Others should consider themselves duly warned.
