Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylized in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh

Description

Fall under the delightful spell of Moonstruck, the mesmerizing romantic comedy from director Norman Jewison (Fiddler on the Roof) and OscarÂ(r) winner* John Patrick Shanley. Academy AwardÂ(r) winners** Cher, Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis excel in this explosively funny tale which also features flawless performances by Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia and Frasier's John Mahoney. Cher is "devastatingly funny, sinuous and beautiful" (Pauline Kael) as Loretta, an unlucky in love Italian widow who finds romance through the intervention of the Manhattan moon. With her wedding to a close friend just weeks away, she meets and falls hopelessly in love with his younger brother (Cage)! Her dilemma and her equally passionate and hilariously eccentric family make for an unforgettable film you'll find "beguiling" (Time), "enchanting" (Newsweek) and "irresistible" ("Today Show").

Cher is one of my all time favorite people and I can watch this movie time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars I'm stuck on Moonstruck.......2007-05-19

This is a delightful romantic comedy. Cher does a wonderful job of changing from a frumpy, overworked fiancee to a glamorous, sexy girlfriend of Nicholas Cage. Good performances by everyone.

You might not get a thrill from the sight of Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando throwing popcorn into each other's mouths, but that didn't stop this movie from gaining a new lease on life thanks to cable television and home video. It's a quirky romantic comedy about a mental patient (Johnny Depp) who claims to be Don Juan, the world's greatest lover, and he gets quite a few women to believe it's true. Brando plays the psychiatrist who tries to analyze his patient's apparent delusion, and Dunaway plays Brando's wife, who wants to inject some Don Juan-ish romance into their marital routine. Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, the movie gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Johnny does it again.......2007-07-21

This movie will make you feel...if every man could take some of this essence, i believe they would see life in a new and exciting way. Don Juan, the greatest lover in all the world, is portrayed beautifully by Johnny Depp. A must have for all Depp collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny and Marlon together!.......2007-06-11

Any movie that has these two great actors in it is a must-see. Johnny Depp plays what is his sexiest and most romantic and charismatic role. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Should have won the Academy Award.......2007-06-04

A rare combination of superb acting by nearly every member of the cast from cameo to lead,
superbly crafted scenes, editing and direction. A story of life, love and the pursuit of incurable
romantic optimism that can teach us not to take ourselves so seriously.
Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Film.......2007-05-18

Don Juan Demarco certainly is not one of Johnny Depp's better roles but I cannot think of anyone who could have played his mental patient who believes he is (and actually is) the world's greatest lover. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the overwhelming romantic effect Don Juan Demarco has just simply being around women and on his doctor (Jack Mickler played by Marlon Brando). As Don Juan relates his fantasy-like life and romantic awakening he influences his doctor to romance his wife, played by Faye Dunaway. It may be a bit of a stretch to see Marlon Brando as romantic at a weight of 300 plus pounds but there is a playful chemistry between Dunaway and Brando that is charming. The story of Don Juan's life is fantastic, including his duel with the father of the woman he has fallen in love with, being sold into slavery to a Sultana and living in a harem surrounded by women. What tension there is in the film centers on if Don Juan will be committed or released before his 10 days of observation lapse. In this, Dr. Mickler is certain that he will be released but faces opposition from all of the other staff doctors who would prefer to see Don Juan on medication.

The supporting cast turns in fine performances and includes Rachel Ticotin as Don Juan's mother. Overall this is a feel-good and entertaining film with some very good performances, and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars. I saw part of the movie on a cable channel and became caught up in the story enough to want to have a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Don Juan DeMarco.......2007-03-29

What can I say - Johnny Depp once again proves what a fantastic actor he is.

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, this box-office hit cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe's reputation as "the voice of a generation." Crowe could probably do without that label, but he's definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realization that he needs the love and respect of the single mom (Renée Zellweger in her breakthrough role) who has supported him through the worst of times. This is one of Cruise's best, most underrated performances, and in an Oscar-winning role, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the football star who remains Jerry Maguire's only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth. If that sounds touchy-feely, it is only because Crowe has combined sharp entertainment with a depth of character that is rarely found in mainstream comedy. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The world is so pale without love.......2007-09-07

It's not a masterpiece but it is a very good film not so much for the meaning it may contain but for the images it sends in the audience. First it gives a positive image of sports by showing how one man, one agent can be different from all others in this "industry", and that the main difference is to believe in what he is doing, to believe in what his heart is telling him, to work with his heart and to love the players, the athletes he is working for, he is working with. That emotional, personal and very close relationship is what everyone needs all the time to feel needed, supported. The film shows that this is also the winning method because athletes want that contact and they can recognize that human attitude and they will work for this warmth of the heart, from the heart and in the heart. And what's more this relationship will enable the athletes as well as the agents to face the difficulties life is made of and life brings up all the time. This will mean success to the athletes as athletes and success for both the agents and the athletes financially. What's more the film conveys another tremendously positive image because the agent is white and the athlete is black and their relationship is one of trust, total friendship and confidence, one of love nothing but love and care and that is the right model to send in the public: what is important is not the differences among people but the possibility to establish trusting and loving relationships beyond these differences and accepting them totally.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Maguire.......2007-07-13

Cameron Crowe's directorial breakthrough (he also scripted) is an infectious comedy-romance buoyed by a star-making turn from Zellwegger, and an Oscar-winning comic performance from Gooding. Young Lipnicki is pretty appealing too, and all provide Cruise with plenty of opportunities to shine. Razor-sharp yet very human satire ends up really warming the heart.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten All Time.......2007-07-07

Why? It is REAL! The character relationships and interaction are HONEST. We are talking real, raw, genuine emotion! The movie is about making a change in your own character and living with the consequences, good and bad. It is about developing genuine relationships in your life. It is about two men who "mature" through their relationship with each other. Some of the dialogue is now part of our pop-culture. There are some scenes that are hilarious. You will definitely take away a few things from this movie that will be with you forever.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2007-06-27

Hey, we all know JERRY MAGUIRE was a box office hit that put sultry Renee Zellweger on the superstar map and birthed one of the most famous lines in all of cinema. I've seen this little gem upteen times, enjoyed it even more with each viewing, and scratch my itchy head in amazement that I have yet to review it. Suffice it to say the review begins now. . .

Let's bypass the plot and the Big Three (Renee, Tom, Cuba); for me this movie ultimately succeeds by the fantastic performances of several of its second tier players. Jay Mohr is the guy you love to hate as Jerry's backstabbing former boss, Bob Sugar; Bonnie Hunt is the manhater with a heart of pure gold as Renee's sis Laurel. But Regina King tops them all as Marcee, loving and devoted wife of unappreciated and underpaid Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell. King is a vivacious, voluptuous goddess who absolutely steals every scene she's in, and while she steals it she exudes steamy sensuality. Rod Tidwell is one lucky dude.

So with the strength of its cast and its delightful plot, JERRY MAGUIRE has something for everyone. The Tom and Renee romance pleases the chicks, while the guys get off on the sports drama. Furthermore, sports enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy all the cameos made by sports celebrities and broadcasters. Bottom line: If you haven't seen JERRY MAGUIRE, by all means see JERRY MAGUIRE. Show me the DVD player.

4 out of 5 stars One of the great film comedies of the 1990's.......2007-05-23

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent who has an epiphany one day about having "less clients, less money". This soon leads to him getting fired from his agency and he his down to one demanding football-playing client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and a secretary Dorothy Boyd (Rene Zellweger) who takes the plunge and comes with him.

Jerry Maguire is a great romantic comedy filled with warmth and humour and characters you really care about. Underappreciated at time of release this is actually one of the great film comedies of the 1990's.

Jerry Maguire is perfectly cast. Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr are simply brilliant and their interplay provides the real highlights of the film - making the most of a brilliant script. The film lags a little bit in the second half and Cruise and Zellweger's romance is not entirely convincing but this is still great compared to most comedies these days.

Sadly, the commentary included on the DVD with the director and his three leads is a waste of time. It is a self-indulgent, back-slapping session of the very worst kind with insights on the level of "I loved that scene", "you were great in the scene", "awesome", etc, etc. Very disapointing as I was interested in gaining some insights on the making of this great film. Hopefully in a few year's time Crowe will produce a proper commentary that befits the film.

The DVD does include a pretend Reebok commercial that is worth seeing with Cuba, but otherwise you could save your money and just buy the one-disc edition.

Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Simple DVD........2007-08-25

For me this movie holds a lot of nostalgia and that makes it great!
BUT, this is a really simple version of the movie. No extras, no books, no 5.1 SS.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-11-10

This movie is great - I wish a sequel had been made, as was originally planned. It would have been nice if the DVD had been anamorphic, but otherwise it is a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Great for me!.......2006-11-05

I always liked this movie, a simple idea with a great out come. A good story of good verses evil, with a cool strap on rocket. Now i get to enjoy this movie when ever i please.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific entertainment.......2006-08-23

(4.5/5 stars) This is a fantasy film set during World War II, with the Nazis chasing jet-propelled backpack technology that will enable their airmen to land in enemy territory. There is even a mock Nazi propaganda film to illustrate the awesome power of this new weapon. In fact, the film really blurs fantasy with reality, with appearances by W.C. Fields and Cab Calloway, among others. Timothy Dalton plays Neville Sinclair, an actor whose life bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Errol Flynn's. Fiction mixed with reality can be amusing because it offers an imaginative alternative to straight fiction and non-fiction. On the other hand, "The Da Vinci Code," "JFK" and the current Bush administration have all proven mixing fantasy and reality can produce downright ugly results. There is some very good action as The Rocketeer, played by the dashing and handsome Bill Campbell, eludes the Nazis and attempts to foil their plot. Jennifer Connelly is radiant as his love interest, Jenny Blake. This is the type of movie where gray areas do not exist; everything is either black or white, good or bad. Along with excellent sets, wardrobes, styles, etc., this aids the film in establishing its nostalgic, 1940s feel. This is a very fun movie for most of the family. Even though there is little objectionable material, some themes might be better suited for ages ten and up.

2 out of 5 stars Corny, clunky, a deserved turkey of the early 90s........2006-07-15

The Rocketeer is the cinematic version of all the faux-Deco buildings that have been erected in recent years around Los Angeles, particularly the Miracle Mile area. It's wafer-thin nostalgia masks a chintzy story that can't stand on its own two feet.

The plotting of The Rocketeer is sound enough for adolescent fare. Unfortunately, the characters are totally uninspired and the dialogue atrocious. Worse still is the execution of the material. Every actor is miscast and thoroughly lacking in charisma. Bill Campbell -- ever hear of him anymore? He overacts every single scene. Timothy Dalton? Hammy. Jennifer Connelly is the only one to come out unscathed.

The direction is beyond weak. When The Rocketeer appears at the nightclub it is so poorly staged, so cloyingly "goofy" that it extinguishes the promise of anything remotely thrilling from happening. Add to this foul mixture a horrendous James Horner score... you get the idea. Still, some nice set design and an effective animated film-within-a-film make for a couple high points.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars That's Amore!.......2007-08-15

Moonstruck tells the story of Loretta Castorini (Cher) and her entanglement with the brother of her fiancé, Ronny Cammareri (Nicolos Cage). The movie is set in a heavily Italian family and neighborhood. The main story follows Loretta as she struggles with her attraction to Ronny while trying to remain faithful to her fiancé. There is also a sub-plot regarding her parents and marital infidelity. While this may sound kind of raunchy on the surface, the tone is very tongue-in-cheek and it's generally more of a good natured romp than it is hard core salacious.

This movie is one of those rare instances where every aspect of a movie comes together to form something very special. Let's start with the music. Most often, you barely notice a movie's soundtrack but from the moment Dean Martin's "That's Amore" begins, the music sets the perfect tone for this romantic comedy with a distinctive Italian American flavor. Next up, we have the cast. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of either Cher or Nicolas Cage but they are both excellent here. And the supporting cast with the likes of Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia, and Olympia Dukakis seem as though they were born to play their respective parts. The script features razor sharp banter between the characters and many great character moments to make us care what happens. Put all of these pieces together with a story that is silly, yet works perfectly, and you have a terrific movie.

In short, Moonstruck is one of the funniest romantic comedies you can hope to see and it has a great heart. I would recommend it to one and all.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Moonstruck!!.......2007-08-07

This is a real enjoyable comedy with excellent talent by a cast of superstars, great music and a beautiful New York City setting. Cher is beautiful and gives an academy award performance!! I'm glad she won the oscar, because she's a SUPER actress!! Nicolas Cage and the other supporting actors are also very effective in their performances. I truly enjoyed this gem of a comedy!! Moonstruck has become one of my all time favorite films.. A MUST SEE COMEDY!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Moonstruck.......2007-07-09

Nominated for the best picture Oscar and winning statuettes for co-stars Cher and Dukakis, this movie overflows with charm and humor. Cher hits all the right notes as the bewildered Loretta, but Dukakis comes off best in the tricky role of Rose - a rare woman who's as wise about herself as others and faces a challenging personal situation with grace and dignity. A flavorful, heartwarming delight from director Norman Jewison.

3 out of 5 stars Sound is mediocre; still a great movie.......2007-06-08

I bought this for my wife, for Mother's Day, to replace our videotape version which was not in the widescreen, theater layout. It is of course great to have Moonstruck now on DVD, in the letterbox format, but the sound seems to have been mixed a little low. I'm tempted to say the sound may have been also a touch less clear than our videotape version. So, one has to crank up the volume on the TV, which isn't such a big deal, but the next time you turn on the TV: Blam! It's blaring.

5 out of 5 stars Moonstruck (Deluxe Edition).......2007-03-16

I purchased this DVD as a birthday gift for one of my dearest friends and she LOVED it -- she's a Moonstruck fan and absolutely loved the extra clips and movie info that came along with the regular movie it's self. Great gift for any Moonstruck fan!

"Give me what I want and I'll go away," demands the black-eyed, stocking-capped stranger Linoge (Colm Feore), who appears in a quiet island community on the verge of the worst storm in decades and brutally bludgeons an old lady to death. Tim Daly, the town sheriff and voice of reason and moral strength, locks up the quiet madman, but the deaths pile up as Linoge acts them out from his cell like a murderous mime pulling psychic strings. Stephen King, whose original teleplay is his best work for the screen since The Stand, transforms the sleepy burg into a Peyton Place of guilty secrets and criminal activity ripped from under a blanket of small town normality while the white-out of the snowstorm completely cuts them off from civilization. Director Craig R. Baxley nicely maintains an icy tension while the waiting game goes on, perhaps a little too long, before Linoge finally reveals "what he wants" and the drama turns into a struggle for man's soul in miniature. The more ambitious special effects and set pieces sometimes disappoint but are more than made up for in King's knack for turning the mundane into the macabre (the children's song "I'm a Little Teapot" has never sounded more sinister) and a few brilliantly realized sequences, the best of which occurs when townspeople are literally yanked out of existence while watching the storm. Storm of the Century is one of the most successful translations of King's brand of horror to the screen. --Sean Axmaker

The product I had ordered came to me in a very good packaged condition and it was within the estimated time of arrival. The product is of high quality and performace. It is really professional!! Keep the good show.. I will defenitely recommend to my friends.. Cheers to Amazon!!

2 out of 5 stars Like 99% of Stephen Kings movies-a waste of time!.......2007-07-18

The first half of this movie is fairly interesting, and does keep you wondering what is going on. But at the end as with most of Mr. King;s movies it all falls apart, and leaves you angry that you invested so much time in watching this garbage. Master of Horror? I think not. This movie just didn't make much sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars The Choice Is Ours.......2007-07-02

Only one word can describe this film, DEEP!! This is an extremely spiritual movie. I enjoyed every minute. This movie proves that we all ultimately choose our path in this life. Outcomes and all. It teaches us about free will and the power that we have inside to beat any and all demons. Too many of us run to church on Sunday, screamin' HALLELUJAH!! and are living the most trifling lives. The people on this island were full of herendous sins. They had verbal faith, but not spiritual faith on a soul level. When the time came for their faith to take action and pull together as a unit in God's name, they all cowered. All except one, but that one could not do it alone. Anything in this world, whether good or bad, we must first consent to the allowance of anything to happen to us and/or through us. Nothing happens without God's permission. If we are part of THE ONE TRUE SOURCE, that means that God lives within us and we in God. We give the okay for things to happen. This is why free will is always a daily challenge. The knowledge of Spirit is not enough. Our belief(s) is what will sustain and ultimately save us. The Demon in this movie knew this. He knew these folks were simple/take the Bible literally morons and that their "faith" was none. For those whom have not seen this movie, I will not spoil the ending, but remember this: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And even the strongest link cannot hold the entire chain together. Nothing is stronger than the power of the Almighty. Whatever that means to each of us. Ponder upon the many spiritual lessons in this movie. Thank you Stephen King.

1 out of 5 stars One of the most disappointing and dragging movies.......2007-06-26

The first 30 minutes aroused my curiosity. After that it moved at such a slow pace that I felt asleep at least twice. I also lost my interest. There's no suspense or horror in the remaining part.

Pet Sematary and Desperation are much more suspenseful and scarier.

3 out of 5 stars Just didn't draw me in, predictable even for Steven King, and way to long. .......2007-05-31

The biggest problem I had with this movie is that it was so long. I knew exactly how it was going to within the first hour, why did it go on for almost 3 more. And, its the same King theme, a Demon/devil guy comes to town, plays people off of eachother, and leaves, usually changing the town forever from a Good/wholesome place to something different, something evil (eg Needful things, the Stand, deperation,). In this case, It came for "what it wants". Come on, you can't tell me you didn't figure out it was the Sherrifs kid...lets mark this character with AN ANGEL'S SADDLE on his nose, and a Demon comes to town...Yeah, tell me who he's after. Sorry Mr. King, I know you wrote this one for TV specifically, then came out with the script as a story, but this is not a high point. But, I do like many of his books, and even some of his more recent short story collections. But this one just dind't work for me. Worth a viewing, but no huge loss if you don't.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, funny movie.......2007-08-26

I first saw this movie years ago under the name "Don't Tell Her It's Me". It is a very sweet and funny movie, and Jami Gertz, Shelly Long, and Steve Guttenberg are wonderful in it. Some scenes are laught out loud funny, while others are very touching and memorable. The movie grabbed me from the beginning opening scenes, and held my interest until the last moment.

5 out of 5 stars Classic good fun!.......2007-06-03

Originally called "Don't Tell Her It's Me", this is one must see movie. You and your friends will forever have the catch phrase, "I'm Lobo....." pop into conversations. Fun, fun, fun! Don't miss! (Harley lovers get a bonus!)

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Movies.......2007-03-19

I have always loved this movie. They changed the name to "Boyfriend School" so it took me a while to find it in DVD, but it's the exact same movie. It's a story with a lot of heart and exposes some of our silly notions about what really matters in the character of a person. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable !.......2007-03-06

This movie is funny and entertaining. I viewed it previously when it was titled "Don't Tell Her It's Me". I believe that many of the scenes were shot in the Charleston, South Carolina, area - quite beautiful and historical. I'm so glad to have it in my library.

5 out of 5 stars "Don't Tell Her It's Me" is such a better title than "Boyfriend School" . . ........2006-11-21

. . . makes it sound like it's a movie for pre-teens. That marketing agent should be sent back to the mail room. I saw this movie in my 20's and loved it. I found the VHS version after some hunting in my early 30's and I still love it. It's a good girly-movie with all the cheezy fun of a romance novel. (My husband actually likes it too - though he wouldn't exactly announce it.) If you like Shelly Long and Steve Gootenberg (sp?), you'll like this movie.

4 out of 5 stars 80s Horror Fun.......2007-05-20

Well, if you grew up during the 80s, you might remember this little gem of a comedy/horror film. This film used to play on HBO a lot, during the young years of HBO when it used to be nothing but movies and those who grew up during that time will sure remember it. Richards saves this movie a lot when the movie drags (fans of Richards will sure to pick it up im sure) and fans of Davis will enjoy it too , a very young Davis. Anyways, very funny and love the movie very much and good for that change of effect of gore to comedy on Halloween. Recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Great old movie.......2007-05-15

I love this movie. It is so funny and makes my day when I see it. One movie I can watch over and over.

2 out of 5 stars Too dumb for me.......2007-03-29

Its often intriguing to watch famous comedians in their early days when they played supporting roles to bigger stars and had to make do with slapstick comedy. Such is the plight of Michael Richards (of Seinfield fame) in this movie. This camp comedy came out in the mid 1980s and highlighted three of the bigger stars of that time; Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, and Ed Bagley Jr. None of these three were top-notch comedians of their time, and it showed in this spoof of horror movies. Basically, two reporters are sent to Transylvania to generate a story for their tabloid newspaper employer. There, they encounter modern day versions of Dracula, Werewolf, the Mummy and Frankenstein, but with an interesting twist of course. Taking place in what should be Romania, none of the Transylvanian characters seem Eastern European by any stretch of the word, and hence the accents are really crappy. So with the acting in general. The DVD itself is very bare-bones; no subtitles even. All in all, a waste of money and time.

4 out of 5 stars Funny Funny Funny.......2007-02-16

This is one of the greats that if you love comedy then you must own this.I laugh every time I see this movie. It will make you laugh till you can not stand it. get it get it get it that is what I say you won't reget it.

5 out of 5 stars Ya can't help but love it.......2007-01-20

Despite the movie being somewhat of a mishmash, the individual bits make it a great movie if you want a good laugh. If you are over 20 you'll recognize most of the actors and if you're under 20 you may see why these people should be recognizable (well, it makes sense to me!)
It is one of those "Quotable" movies, so watch it with friends.

Retrosexuals are back, baby, and between "Man Laws" and Rob Schneider's unaccountably successful film career, this short-lived 1996 Americanized remake of the popular Britcom should behave much better on DVD than it did in the Nielsen ratings. Schneider stars with Ron Eldard (ER) as Jamie and Kevin, childhood friends and roommates. Jamie puts the "id" in idiot with his Kramer-like body spasms and double takes whenever in the presence of a hot babe. He's the slacker type who uses underpants as a coffee filter and endangers an impending job interview so he can surreptitiously rummage through the belongings of his beautiful new neighbor who has unwisely given him her keys. "First impressions can be unfair," she tells him, "but you really seem like a jerk." That's an understatement. Kevin has a slightly more evolved attitude toward women (in the first episode, he queries whether sex is still consensual if his partner falls asleep during it). He at least has a girlfriend, Sarah (Justine Bateman of Family Ties). While the pathetic Jamie struggles just to get to first base, Kevin wrestles with his commitment issues. The situations are predictable (in one episode, Jamie pretends to have a child so he can date a single mother) as are many of the jokes. "They're tire models," Jamie states in one episode during a disastrous double date. "They're used to being rotated."). But you've got to admire Schneider's steadfast commitment to his rude muse without regard for audience empathy.

Eldard and Bateman departed after the end of the first season, but hold those jumping sharks. Schneider took top billing and welcomed a new and equally stunted roommate, Steve (Ken Marino). Both were well matched with female foils. Dina Spybey, who has a young Goldie Hawn's ditzy charm, enjoys an expanded role as Jamie's neighbor, Brenda; Jenica Bergere is Steve's new girlfriend, Katie. Men Behaving Badly may not rank in the "Must-See" pantheon, but especially for Schneider fans, it makes for great boys' night in viewing. Beer, chips, and supermodels not included. --Donald Liebenson

Description

35 Hilarious Episodes, Including 7 Never Seen On TV!

Want to know what "real men" are like? Best friends and roommates, Kevin (Ron Eldard, E.R.) and Jamie (Rob Schneider, Deuce Bigelow) are devoted to prolonging their adolescence. Kevin's girlfriend, Sarah (Justine Bateman, Family Ties), is determined to civilize Kevin, but his bad-boy charisma teamed with Jamie's immoral support are hard to fight.

In the irreverent sitcom's second (and final) season, Jamie takes on a new roommate, Steve (Ken Marino, Veronica Mars), who's equally keen on reclaiming that "boyish charm."

Based on the hit British series, NBC's Men Behaving Badly was originally broadcast from 1996 to 1997. It pushed the boundaries of sitcom humor to all new extremes, promising 22 full minutes of laughter in every episode!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious!.......2007-08-12

I watched these on TV 10 years ago and couldn't wait for the DVD. I laughed my behind off on every episode in the first season. The second season with the departure of "Kevin" and "Sarah" is not as good but still funny and worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1st Season, OK 2nd Season.......2007-04-06

This show is genius and was one of my favorites. The characters and writing was hilarious. Rob Schnieder was the star of the show, but when Ron Eldard and Justine Bateman left the show after the first season he missed the great chemistry he had with them and the show suffered. The replacements didn't have the same talent level and it felt like Schnieder was trying too hard to make up for it.

"Jamie, let me ask you something, okay? If a couple, say like Sarah and I, have a cooling-off period. What does that mean?"
"I'm sure it varies from relationship to relationship, but for me, it means you're shot out of a canon into a sea of FLESH."
"Well, apparently, Sarah agrees with you."

4 out of 5 stars Men behaving badly.......2007-04-02

I was waiting for this release for ten years. In overall, I'm please with the product but I'm really missing the subtitles. Therefore only 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest shows ever!!.......2006-12-30

This show was one of the funniest shows ever!! I have a VHS tape of a few episodes and I'm very happy to see a DVD coming out. I've been checking around for a few years to see if I could get my hands on something like this!!!
It was a shame that the cast could not get along. The first season was so funny. The second season bombed, I stopped watching after the first couple episodes. This DVD is definitely worth it!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Only one truly funny episode of this show.......2006-12-10

I happened to watch this episode and decided to watch this show regularly because of it.

The episode centered on Schneider's character throwing himself in front of a race car on a photo shoot to get a date with two tire models. The girls then show up at the apartment and hilarity actually ensues. Schneider was particularly funny in this episode.

So I started watching the show and quickly became very disappointed. It was downhill from there. So if you think it's worth buying the whole set for one laugh-out-loud episode, have at it.

If you're a lifetime member of the Jennifer Connelly fan club, you'll be in the passionate minority of people (100% male) who won't care that this 1991 comedy is wallowing in its own oily puddle of lameness. The gorgeous Ms. Connelly is conspicuously put on display in this typically lightweight fluff from writer-producer John Hughes. Frank Whaley does his best to liven up the male-fantasy plot about a semi-nerdy teen who gets a night-watchman job in a variety store, only to find himself locked in overnight with the local knockout (Connelly), who's as rich as she is beautiful. She's also really unhappy with her home life and her bully boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney), so it's Frank's big opportunity to make his move as a sympathetic Romeo. Shallow and contrived, the movie does have its standard moments of John Hughes delicacy, and a cameo by the late John Candy scores bonus points for comedy. Still, it's clear that the movie exists primarily to satisfy adolescent lust--and with Connelly as the object of desire, this otherwise tiresome comedy is a triumph of wish-fulfillment casting. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Career Opportunities.......2007-09-10

Great movie. Frank Whaley's funny. Dermot Mulroney hot in a weird way.
Love the soundtrack.
Watched it years ago. Kept hiring it out at the video store.
Looked to buy it for years. Finally found it for sale.
Worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Late 80's & Early 90's Innocence.......2007-08-07

I love this movie! I see it several times, because it takes away my stress. It's has such funny characters. I would say that it's displays the theatrical bridge between the 80's and 90's. It has an innocence within an ambient of security that small towns had at the time. If you like malls you'll find this movie to be a lot of fun. The fantasy of being in a huge store and playing with all the stuff is very soothing. It's a movie for those who find theft to be wrong, yet recognize that it's tempting. Frank Whaley is a real character; he would make an awesome talk show host! The scenes where the characters save the day give the happy ending a real boost.

5 out of 5 stars Every teenager should watch this movie!!.......2007-01-20

I bought this movie for my 17 year old son. When it first came out my husband and I were very young ( all though married already) and even though it's a little corny, to me it's a classic teenage flick. Some parts are so hysterical. I would definately recommend anyone watching it especially teenagers. Great flick !!

3 out of 5 stars A simple fun 83 minutes........2005-12-05

Though this film was released in the early 90's, it has a very 80's feel to it, compliments of John Hughes maybe. It's your typical teen comedy in many ways, just not one of the better ones. The plot was rather weak, though it did make me wonder what I would do stuck in a store overnight. Frank Whaley did a decent job as the town liar/geek/loser. Also the ending was fairly abrupt, and made you wonder what happened to everyone. However, there were two things in the film that were literally outstanding, and both of them were in Jennifer Connelly's tank-top. A must for fans of hers.

4 out of 5 stars Endearingly Silly Comedy With Some Subtle Weight.......2004-11-23

The comedic story of two people locked overnight in a department store, one of them being Jennifer Connelly and the other being, obviously, one of the luckiest guys in the world. They end up encountering some rather incompetent would-be robbers in the process. Underneath the surface there are some kind of dark hints though. Connelly's character is in the store hoping to get caught shoplifting in order to embarrass her rich but scummy father. He's apparantly quite controlling and verbally abusive of her, and it's even implied that it might go far beyond that. The movie never really gets into that possibility beyond a glimmer, because it's chosen to be a fun, endearing romantic fantasy rather than a dark and disturbing drama, but the hint does add an extra dimension.

I think I'd prefer to think that the father is just an immense creep and not something far worse, because while that path could have made a really good drama, I like the really good comedy we got instead. People complain that this isn't serious; but it's a romance and where is it written that romances have to be all somber, stone-faced serious all the time? This romance is chipper, at times endearingly goofy, and wonderful fun, as the two leads (Jennifer and male co-star Frank Whaley) fall in love over the space of an evening. Cynics will scoff at that too, but good grief if you can't believe that something so cool could happen in one night in the movies, what hope do people have of love striking like lightening in real life? Not to mention the pluses of scenes like Jennifer riding the store's coin-opreated mechanical horse (with, happily, the inevitable bounce) or the fact that hearing her giggle is worth buying the movie alone.

Now that Connelly has finally received her rightful acclaim thanks to her recent movies, alot of people have dismissed her earlier stuff. To me, all through her career she's been brilliant. She's shined in the dramas everybody knows about (and a few that have slipped through the cracks, like "Seven Minutes In Heaven", one of her alltime best), she's shined in horror ("Phenomena", aka "Creepers"), she's shined in action/adventure like "The Rocketeer" and she's shined in comedies like "Career Opportunities". This diversity makes her one of moviedom's most valuable performers.

I don't mean to ignore the other performers; they all did fine jobs, but Jennifer was the main draw for me. Besides, I just don't think Whaley or the bumbling robbers would have looked quite as good in that white halter top.

As good as it is, it missed some opportunities to be significantly better, so it's refined to a strong four stars. The script was pretty minimal, and there were missed opportuities for humor, but the cast have made what they have work splendidly, and I fully recommend it. If you like this kind of comedic romantic fantasy fun, I also recommend the 2 "Mannequin" movies, the charming and enchanting "Amelie" and the heartpoundingly sexy "Dream Trap".
