5 out of 5 stars Mr. Moto Film Collection.......2007-08-06

Absolutely a must if you are a Moto fan! The best reproductions ever! I have copies from several sources of the Mr. Moto films. These are highly superior to all my other copies. Don't miss this collection! I give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Moto Rides Again.......2007-07-27

If you like the genre, you will like this set. Although each movie is very similar to every other, the restoration is very well done. And old film buffs will enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars Murder Mystery and Suspense.......2007-07-12

I have enjoyed the Mr. Moto series for as long as I can remember, after seeing it on TV when I was eight or nine years old. The company did a great job of restoration on both sets and I thought Peter Lorre did a fine job of playing the part of Mr. Motto, it is true the plots were pretty easy to figure out but that does not detract from the films and they were fun to watch, the scenes were mr Motto gets into a fight with the bad guys is interesting and in a couple of them you have to ask your self is that a stunt man or a dummy dressed up like the bad guy being thrown around.
If you like a mystery, comedy, and suspense film and you enjoy the other films of this type like Charlie Chan, Boston Blackie, Mr Wong, The lone Wolf , Nancy Drew (original four movies), The Falcon, The Saint, The Thin Man, and Bulldog Drummond, you will enjoys The Mr. Motto Series as well

5 out of 5 stars GOOD STUFF.......2007-07-09

IF YOU'RE BUYING THE MISTER MOTO FILMS, IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE IN FOR. THEREFORE THE ONLY PERTINENT QUESTIONS ARE HOW THEY LOOK, SOUND, ETC. THEY ARE VISUALLY VERY CLEAR AND THE SOUND IS QUIET. IF YOU LIKE CLASSIC BLACK & WHITE DETECTIVE MYSTERYS, YOU WILL LIKE THESE. THEY SEEM TO BE COMPLETE AS OPPOSED TO HAVING BEEN CUT FOR TV. I'VE ONLY WATCHED 3 SO FAR, BUT SO FAR THEY PLAY FINE AND ARE QUITE ENTERTAINING.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Lorre - a great actor.......2007-07-05

The role of Mr. Moto is such an intriuging character and Peter Lorre plays him perfectly. Mr. Moto's Last Warning has just the right amount of suspense and chracter development. Very nice clean entertainment.

Any connection to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror tale is tenuous at best in this action-packed superhero story with dark undertones. Adam Baldwin is San Francisco surgeon Henry Jekyll, whose honeymoon in Hong Kong becomes a nightmare when a triad gang murders his wife and marks him for death. Saved by a mysterious Chinese healer who speaks in fortune cookie clichés, he becomes a kind of hero-in-training (think The Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi) with a mystic twist: he discovers the herbal formula to release his inner brute and transforms into a demonic-looking Hyde. The colorful mix of cop show, gangster thriller, and mystic martial arts adventure ends on an anticlimactic note, as if this made-for-TV feature was the pilot for a never-launched TV series, but it's an energetic and spirited film that, for all its kooky clichés, remains oddly compelling. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Doc Jekyl and Kung-Fu Hyde.......2006-02-19

This is the loosest adaptation of anything I've ever seen. In fact, loose doesn't even begin to describe it. What Sci-Fi has done is taken the title of the Robert Louis Stevenson's novella in order to draw viewers in, and nothing else.

The TV movie follows Dr. Henry Jekyll, now a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. The entire supporting cast of Stevenson's story, even in name, is nonexistent. Jekyll travels to China with his new bride for a honeymoon. There he encounters Chinese mobsters who maim the doctor, kill his wife, and leave him for revenge.

Up to this point, the movie had potential. An action-adventure vigilante retelling of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" might have been worth seeing. Unfortunately, the movie never even tries to live up to its source material. Dr. Jekyll apprentices himself to a local medicine man and studies martial arts under the name "Edward Hyde." It looks like Sci-Fi had to throw both of those names in there somewhere in order to keep the title. Eventually, in the final third of the movie, Dr. Jekyll does make a medicine that gives him glowing eyes, sharp teeth, and a killer edge. But Stevenson's theme of the struggle between good and evil inside of every man is unexplored. If Sci-Fi was going to take the title, they should have at the very least tried to stay true to the theme. Under the influence of the medicine, Dr. Jekyll is aware, even more aware, of what he is doing. Mr. Hyde is all alias, no altar ego.

The acting performances are solid, but the movie is hard to enjoy when it begs to be compared to its classic source material. Before the halfway point of the movie, the "Based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson" in the credits seems like a bold-faced lie. If you enjoy American-in-China-karate-action movies, and you have nothing better to watch, try this on for size. If you're looking for an adaptation of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", avoid this, or you'll be sorely disappointed.

By the way, the recent "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" was a better Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde action movie.

5 out of 5 stars underrated action film.......2006-02-17

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was a pleasant surprise. We thought it would be the usual kung foo action film, instead found it to be full of gentle humor, Chinese medicine, and interesting characters. Adam Baldwin(Dr. Jekyll) and Chang Tseng(Dr. Chau) relate extremely well to each other and have a unique student-teacher relationship. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Adam Baldwin.......2005-11-24

He makes me swoon... and I was surprised to see him in something not half bad. The lack of resolution makes me wish it had been fleshed out into a series, but still overall enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Um..........2005-10-27

Quick thing to the last reviewer. Adam can't do his brothers proud- HE'S NOT A BALDWIN BROTHER. Take it from someone who carpools with his kids, that mistake ticks him off

3 out of 5 stars NICE TRY BUT DISAPPOINTING RESOLUTION.......2005-10-06

Francis Ford Coppola executive produced this film for his Zoetrope studios, and it must have been a pilot for a failed tv series, as it has no real resolution. Giving the classic story a new twist, it has nothing to do with its classic source, but instead is almost a transcendtalized superhero movie with a buff and surprisingly effective Adam Baldwin inhabiting the dual roles. Full of mystic mumbojumbo and some fairly well staged karate fights, this version gives us the dual-faced doctor as a vengeful fellow out to avenge the brutal murder of his bride on their honeymoon in Hong Kong. Baldwin teams up with a Chinese fairy godfather and learns the ins and outs of herbal medicine in his attempts to bring down the bad guys. Not bad but since we don't get a resolution, one feels a little cheated.

5 out of 5 stars Boris Karloff at his humble best!.......2007-01-04

Boris Karloff must have been one of the nicest gentlemen in Hollywood during these early crazy days. It's so wonderful to see him in less makeup and not having to speak in a fractured Chinese accent. His character is very kind and very intelligent. I would like to find some of the old "Collier's" magazine stories that the movies were based on to see how they adapted the character to film. The movies were also made with well-spoken Chinese actors, only a few of the men servants spoke with a fratured English, but I work with many heavy accented folks who have lived in the US for over 40 years. The characters weren't too drippy and the plot line was plausible. The times didn't call for lots of gore, so you won't see blood oozing all over as in todays films. I intend to complete the "Mr. Wong" series as soon as I can.

5 out of 5 stars A Haunting Mr. Wong!.......2004-07-02

This is a terrific DVD for the atmosphere, the clever Mr. Wong and the great transfer. This is a B picture, to be sure, shot on a budget, but its great fun as Mr. Wong solves his case. The transfer is very good considering there is no restoration. The sound is very good as well. I love this series and Boris is the man to play the character.

5 out of 5 stars loved it.......2004-06-29

I have found these Mr Wong movies very addictive! I'm glad Alpha has made these available! Mr Wong In Chinatown isn't the best mystery in the series, but it is still one of my favorites of the series. This one is a little stranger that other entries. Very unusual!

3 out of 5 stars Mr. Wong searches for the murderer of Princess Lin Hwa.......2001-08-02

This film is third of Boris Karloff's turns as the Chinese detective James Lee Wong. Princess Lin Hwa (Lotus Long) visits Mr. Wong for help and is killed by a poisoned arrow. This time Mr. Wong is joined not only by Captain Street (Grant Withers) but the policeman's fiance, reporter Bobby Logan (Marjorie Reynolds). When the trio check out the apartment of the princess they find her maid murdered and the only witness a mute dwarf (Angelo Rosita) who suddenly disappears. This is a below average mystery which gives Karloff very little to do besides maintain his unruffled demeanor. The last reel picks up a bit as Mr. Wong falls into the hands of the murderer and has to be rescued by his companions. Like the other films in this series, this 1939 film was directed by William Nigh and based on the stories of Hugh Wiley.

5 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-15

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

BIOS:
1. Bela Lugosi (aka: Béla Ferenc Dezsõ Blaskó)
Date of birth: 20 October 1882 - Lugos, Austria-Hungary. [now Lugoj, Romania]
Date of death: 16 August 1956 - Los Angeles, California
2. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Director, Writer and Producer)
Date of birth: 10 October 1924 - Poughkeepsie, New York
Date of death: 10 December 1978 - North Hollywood, California

This collection of "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years --- but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten ... Plus the half-hour tribute "100 Years of Horror: Bela Lugosi", hosted by Christopher Lee --- and a great job by Passport Video for this release --- looking forward to more of the same from the '20s and '50s vintage...order your copy now from Amazon or Passport Video, stay tuned once again for more remarkable films from the vaults of classic television and Hollywood during the Golden Era of Entertaiment.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious Mr. Wong.......2006-08-31

If you like 1930s mystery films with a "Chinatown" theme,
this IS FOR YOU! Dark Chinatown street scenes, lurking Chinamen, hidden underground rooms and passageways add to the
flavor of this vintage mysterious and sometimes hilarious film in
search valuable ancient coins. Lugosi is the star here as the evil Mr.Wong in a duel role with his hidden torture chamber under the streets of Chinatown. Great sets, costumes and good one-liners by other members of the cast add to the addictive charm of this overlooked classic Lugosi. The video quality is excellent considering the age of the film...love the DVD cover art as well! DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!! ...GREAT PRICE TOO!

4 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun.......2006-02-17

Bela Lugosi changes genres in 1934's "The Mysterious Mr. Wong"; a detective mystery set in LA's Chinatown. As Li See he is the low profile owner of a herb shop patronized for comic relief by a stereotypical Irish cop. But he is secretly the title character who will stop at nothing to gather all twelve of the Coins of Confucius. Once he has all twelve he will have special powers in Keelat (a Chinese province) from where he apparently can inflict his evil on a wider scale.

All these coins have found there way to 1930's LA for some reason and Wong's minions spend the first part of the movie murdering assorted Chinese characters to gain possession of each coin. You quickly learn which guys are his minions because they are the only ones in the movie who wear "Billy Jack" style flat brim hats.

Newspaper reporter Jason Barton (Wallace Ford) begins to investigate the murders, both alone and in the company of his paper's cute and plucky switchboard operator Peg (Arline Judge). Judge becomes one of the earliest scream queens as talking pictures had only been around a few years. The chemistry and banter between Ford and Judge is the best thing about "The Mysterious Mr. Wong". It is the equal of Gable and Colbert in "It Happened One Night" but unfortunately their scenes together are not the central focus of the story.

Wong has a beautiful niece (played by Lotus Long) who periodically appears in short scenes of no actual consequence to the plot. She is in a constant state of great distress about her uncle's evil activities and it is implied that Wong kills her after she leads Barton and Peg to him.

The movie never explains why Wong regards this as a bad thing because it appears to be exactly what he wanted her to do. But this is an illustration of many logic problems in the screenplay, which are best ignored. Just enjoy the great dialogue despite the flaws in storyline logic. Some stuff essential to the plot was probably trimmed to reduce the running time. Barton and Peg are given one of the coins by a disembodied hand while they are having dinner in a Chinese restaurant. Viewers have to fill in a lot of missing action to connect this improbable coincidence with earlier events.

The Hollywood racist and ethnic stereotypes abound, my favorite is a Chinese university professor who heads up the Department of Orientology.

Lugosi is sinister in a nice self-parodying way, with an accent that is more vaguely foreign than Chinese. His Mr. Wong is entirely unrelated to Boris Karloff's later detective series of the same name.

If you enjoy early cinema this one is highly recommended. The suspense won't keep you on the edge of your seat but the Ford and Judge interplay is timeless

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bela's Best!.......2003-12-11

We are told in the prologue that Confucius, on his death-bed, handed out 12 coins to twelve friends. Apparently, if any one man gets a hold of all of these coins together, he will be the supreme ruler of the Chinese province of Keelat. Bela Lugosi plays plays Fu Wong, a sinister Chinaman with a heavy Hungarian accent, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the coins. Wallace Ford is a wise-cracking reporter on his trail of murder and torture. It all boils down to a crock of creaky,B-grade nonsense. Really! If you like this sort of thing, the cheap Alpha DVD has a reasonable VHS quality picture on it but the sound is a bit woolly and gets worse towards the end. I lost interest about half-way through but if it's your bag.... Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the "Bad" films........2002-10-25

This is one of the best of the cheap "Chinatown" mysteries. A real classic. The more you watch it, the more it grows on you.
DVD picture quality is pretty good, the sound is OK, but what can your expect from Monogram pictures. Buy it!

Mr. Wong in Chinatown (1939/71 min.) surrounds the murder of a Chinese princess that leads the detective into a labyrinthine puzzle involving the secret sale of weapons between China and Japan. By the fourth film in the series, The Fatal Hour (1940/68 min.), Boris Karloff had refined his character acting to such a degree that you actually believed he was a Chinese-born, Oxford-educated detective. 5 out of 5 stars The Best Mr. Wong.......2004-07-02

This is probably the best of the Mr. Wong series with Boris.

    4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this.......2004-06-30

This Mr Wong film really drew me in. I found it most entertaining. Mr Wong is something of an obscure movie detective, but it's great that he is once again available to entertain viewers. All six Mr Wong movies are now on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars a true treasure for Mr Wong fans.......2004-06-30

You wont find a more complete set of DVDs if you are a fan of Mr Wong. All six Wong films are here: Mr Wong Detective, Mystery of Mr Wong, Mr Wong In Chinatown, The Fatal Hour, Doomed To Die, and Phantom of Chinatown. Phantom of Chinatown is one of the most interesting in the series and stars Keye Luke as an earlier and younger Mr Wong. These movies have captivated me since I was just a wee lad and I was thrilled to discover this DVD set. It is the most complete one available and a true must for Mr Wong fans.

2 out of 5 stars Good Prints, But a Forgettable Series.......2004-04-08

When Monogram recruited Boris Karloff for its "Mr. Wong" series in 1938, the studio apparently believed that the horror icon's presence would be strong enough to carry its low-budget product. They were sadly mistaken and the series folded in 1940 after six films, with Karloff appearing in only five of them. (Interestingly, Keye Luke played a younger version of the Chinese detective in the final installment.) Time has not been kind to the "Mr. Wong" series. These mysteries are deadly dull and have virtually nothing to offer except the sincerity of Karloff's performances. On the plus side, these are the best prints you are likely to find. Still, Karloff's association with Monogram was less distinguished than Bela Lugosi's run during the early 1940s. Even Bela's "Mysterious Mr. Wong" (no relation) is more entertaining than the dreary exploits of James Lee Wong.

4 out of 5 stars A Fairly Good Detective Film.......2003-05-06

In MR. WONG, DETECTIVE James Lee Wong is hired by the owner of a chemical manufacturing firm who is accused of stealing a secret formula. The owner and two of his associates are promptly murdered leaving Mr. Wong with three homicides to solve.

William Nigh is the director of this movie which is the first of six entries in the series. Boris Karloff has the starring role of Mr. Wong. The rather small supporting cast includes Grant Withers, Maxine Jennings, Evelyn Brent, Frank Bruno, Lucien Prival and Lee Tong Foo.

Screen legend Boris Karloff starred in no less than eight films in 1940, including his final outing as the Oxford-educated Chinese detective James Lee Wong in Doomed to Die (68 min.). The series would add one more feature that same year in Phantom of Chinatown (61 min.) starring character actor Keye Luke as Mr. Wongs son. B&w/ NR.

4 out of 5 stars KARLOFF THE GREAT.......2007-04-15

Although he is famous for creating some of the most memorable "monster" characters in movie history, people forget Boris Karloff was nothing like his movie image. he was born in England and very kindly. He was also an extremely versatile actor who could play any role. The Mr. Wong series is a good example. There is a 7 pack that is up for auction all the time. This contains only 4 of the 5 Karloff movies. But if you are a fan of the genre (which includes, Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, Sherlock Holmes), this is a must have despite the fact it is an incomplete series. A good starter set and too pricey.

5 out of 5 stars A different effort by Boris.......2007-03-08

I know this is a review for the mystery collection "4 Pack" but I would recommend any fans of this series get the "6 pack" which contains ALL the Mr. wong series movies. These are ALL top notch 40's oriental detective movies although some consider them "B" type movies. If you like Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Moto, and Charlie Chan you REALLY need the Mr. Wong set to round out your collection. I recommend this one as a BUY in either the 4 pack or 6 pack. Happy classic viewing to you.

5 out of 5 stars You can not go Wong with Boris Karloff.......2005-02-18

Be aware that there is a six pack and if you only need a sample this pack will due. I personally would feel I needed them all (good or bad).

If Peter Lorre (Rosenberg, Austria-Hungary [now Ruzomberok, Slovakia]) can be Mr. Moto "Mr. Moto's Last Warning (1939)," then Boris Karloff (Camberwell, London, England, UK) can be Mr. Wong.

Actually these six films are quite entertaining. I paid a little less, but they were on VHS. The DVDs being a set will save on shipping. They may last a little longer also. So put on your thinking hat and buy the set.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SET!!.......2004-06-29

I've been a fan of Mr Wong for years and just had to get this set. Both Keye Luke and Boris Karloff played Mr Wong and I've always enjoyed both actors work in the role. I wish there was a set of all six Wong movies, but this set of four is very nice.
