This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. It's effective to a point, but vaguely hollow at its core. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper.

5 out of 5 stars THE WAY TO TELL THE WORLD THAT THEY'RE OUT THERE!!.......2007-09-02

i loved this movie, the whole deal. peaceful community, normal family, then bam, a huge crop circle right on thier farm. what is it? where did it come from? who made it? not human, they're watching, and they're coming, but not in peace. this movies got great suspense, good visual, and the aliens look crazy freaky. every time i watch it it still gets me. mostly because all this about crop circles is for real, it's based on real life events. so then what's going to happen in the future. who knows? mel gibson is a great actor no doubt and in this film it shows, as with joaquin phoenix great actor as well. love him. once again m. night shyamalan knows how to do it. he tries to bring more than others to the table through his films and he always succeeds. great job.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie and some good extra features!.......2007-08-04

The movie was great. When I got a gift card for Christmas one year I knew this was the DVD I wanted to buy. It's one of M Night Shyamalan's best movies (I even think it was better than Sixth Sense).

The DVD has an neat bonus footage on it - like a movie made by MNS when he was a kid. It's great to see his vision as a child and how far he has grown. The DVD also has a nice story board to scene feature for certain parts of the movie. It's kinda neat to see how the finished product stacked up against the story boards.

However with a movie with this much humor I would have loved to seen some bloopers or outtakes. But then again I say that about every movie.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite M. Night Shyamalan film........2007-07-31

I love thrillers, sci-fi, and spiritual/moral dilemma films and who would think that one film would have all that I grave.

Amazon gives a good snynopsis of the story, so no need to repeat it here, but I greatly disagree with their notion that this film is somewhat hollow or empty which I find ironic after they mention all this film is about and the crisis of faith that comes to a head with Mel Gibson's fallen minister character. This film is extremely well-written, outstandingly acted by all familiar actors who disappear into their roles, and effectively directed by Shyamalan who also wrote the film. James Newton Howard, ER and The Sixth Sense, created the memorable and haunting score which greatly added to the atmosphere of the film. In addition, the special effects and make-up team, guided by Shyamalan's vision and direction, created chills and believability without massive Spielberg-style (War of the Worlds) treatment which would have been only a distraction in this film.

My only real criticism is that this film has Shyamalan's trademark approach. That means that it's all rather contrived and he hammers us at the end for not seeing the ending coming (yet again, a la The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable). However, to pick on this element of his directorial/writing style is like picking on Hitchcock's use of suspense in his classic films.

This film has great repeat value even after knowing how the "signs" all add up. This is one of my absolute favorite films of all time. You may not enjoy it as much as I did, but I sincerely believe that most will enjoy this film for one reason or another.

5 out of 5 stars Are you the type who sees signs?.......2007-06-18

Signs has much more to offer than Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds." In this reality, the world is populated with numerous signs seemingly hidden in plain sight.

Director M. Night Shyamalan divides people into two camps: The type who believes in miracles, sees signs; and those who think we just get lucky.

Shyamalan's carefully crafted universe has creatures that must resort to warring with other planets to survive... and there is us. Shyamalan's war pits technologically superior creatures against an unsuspecting world, and a shattered world occupied by a clergyman who questions his faith following the death of his wife. Shyamalan goes further than the Sixth Sense, the bone-chilling tale of a young boy ("I see dead people") haunted by ghosts who appear regularly in his life to enlist his help. In Signs, Shyamalan declares not only can we help the dead, the dead also help us.

Another way of putting it: There are no coincidences. From the son's asthma and the daughter's dreams to the brother's baseball prowess and the tragic instance in which a veterinarian's momentary lapse at the wheel claims a life. The plot is a masterpiece in misdirection. Signs opens to an aerial view of crop circles. More signs of the impending invasion appear as the story moves forward. But these are not the signs that we should be looking at. In the last reel, the dying wife who has but a moment to tell seems to be rambling. But it turns out, she was staring into the future, not her husband's eyes.

This movie says we are much more than we seem.

Mel Gibson's character, the grieving Rev. Graham Hess finds himself suddenly struggling to make sense of the many odd happenings at his farm. He already has isolated himself following his wife's death. Of course, his guard is up. But he finds himself awkwardly grasping to cling to his understanding of the new reality. He can dismiss the crop circles in his fields as mischief by pranksters. But, he soon can't deny the mounting evidence and nocturnal visits from unseen and unseeable intruders. Edgy, provocative and well-paced, Signs is a multilayered and intricately woven piece to try and digest in an afternoon at the theater.

I was first struck by Shyamalan's study of how his characters cope with the increasingly apparent threat. The no-nonsense son Morgan immediately seeks out a book and a curious and chilling element to this story, a baby monitor. The brother Merrill who has taken a room over the garage to help the family turns to the TV. The youngest, the girl who must be about kindergarten age, believes she is dreaming. It is the father, Graham, who is not coping well living in denial. But who can blame him?

"There is no one out there to help us. We're all alone," our resigned and frockless clergyman declares.

The final scenes are well-constructed to induce fear. Shyamalan masterfully pulls all the pieces together at the end. If you were impressed by Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, you will enjoy this offering... again and again.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent film from theSci-Fi genre.......2007-06-13

This is one of those films that my wife dragged me kicking and screaming to see in the theater, but as has often been the case over our thirty-six year marriage, it turned out to be one that I would end up adding to my collection.

Normally, Science-Fiction films either bore me greatly, or scare me out of my wits, but this story is quite different. Not only is this a well-made, tense and exciting story of an attempted alien invasion of Earth, but it is also a very touching and actually inspirational story. Mel Gibson plays a former minister who totally lost his faith as the result of his wife's tragic death, but eventually finds it once again as a result of an exciting encounter with aliens. Beginning with the appearance of "crop circles" in his corn field, then in other locales around the world, followed soon by other strange "signs," Gibson finds himself trapped by the aliens in his home, with his two small children and his younger brother, played well by Joaquin Phoenix.

If you have not seen the film, do so. If you have not added it to your collection, do so. The climax alone is worth the purchase price, and it is surely a film you can watch with your children.

Scooby-Doo is making a big comeback with several helpings on TV and new videos. The series' writers are smart enough to mildly spoof themselves, and this movie opens with Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Frank, and Velma solving a crime that ends with the now-classic Scooby line, "It's... [insert some administrative minion/angry neighbor/disgruntled relative], only to have the criminal bleat, "And I would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you kids!" There they meet one of Velma's idols, fright-writer Ben Ravencroft (voiced by an effective Tim Curry). Smitten Velma and gang accept his invitation to his New England hometown festival. When one of Ravencroft's ancestors suddenly swoops down from the supernatural heavens, the gang's on alert. This movie is appropriate for viewers 4 and up (although some of the animated frights may haunt sensitive viewers). It's also for their parents who may have been fans in the series' initial run. The cool and fun soundtrack's catchy tunes include a song performed by the Hex Girls, one of whom is none other than former Go-Go Jane Weidlin. If the theme song's got a country beat, that's because it's sung by Mr. Achy Breaky himself, Billy Ray Cyrus. --N.F. Mendoza

1 out of 5 stars Not your father's Scooby Doo.......2007-09-16

I wish I'd read a few reviews before I watched the movie with my kids. The original Scooby Doo series showed kids that when the lights come on, you see there was really nothing to be afraid of. This movie was a betrayal of that ethos with the inclusion of "real" monsters and magic. The movie starts out great with hip, witty writing and dialogue that riffs on the Scooby legacy in a way that keeps it interesting and humorous for adults. In act two, "Witch's Ghost" flames-out as a kids' movie as it morphs into an animated equivalent of a teen horror flick.

The part of the movie that played like a religious tract/promo for the Wicca was just weird. Adult Scooby fans should watch this so you know I'm not making it up or exaggerating. What's going on over there at Time Warner? It's like Wicca licensed the Scooby Doo characters from them to burnish its image. No matter what your religious beliefs are, it's weird to see a religion endorsed in a major studio commercial kids' movie. If this movie played in theaters it would get a PG-13. It's not for the under 12 crowd. My kids (under 7) didn't really lock in on the Wicca thing, but they were freaked out by the monster turning out to be "real" and deadly--a fairly central guest character gets sucked screaming into the underworld by supernatural forces of evil. I think our pluralistic society would remain more harmonious if Warner Bros. would adhere to the separation of church and Scooby from now on.

4 out of 5 stars This is not Wiccan Propaganda..........2007-05-23

Scooby and the gang help an author look for the diary of his ancestor; he claims she was wrongfully accused of using her magic for evil.

I have read many of the reviews trashing this as Wiccan Propoganda. If it were truly Wiccan Propaganda, then the supernatural element would be out! There might be spells and potions used, but a ghost trapped in a book and a giant turkey would never have been used. The supernatural parts are for entertainment...because portraying real Wicca would be uninteresting--any portrayal of a religion is most likely to be inaccurate...

1. We will never see an accurate story about the history of Islam because any portrayal of Muhammad is punishable by death.

2. "The Da Vinci Code" was attacked as trying to make people question the divintiy of Christ and accusing the Catholic Church of a major cover up--I am Christian; this movie did not make me question Christ's divinity; it reminded me that he was also human. I am Catholic...I have always thought of religion as a form of government, so I would not be surprised if there are some cover ups.

SCOOBY-DOO AND THE WITCH'S GHOST is a story that plays fair. It reveals a truth that exists in all religions...a truth that my research shows Wicca the most willing to accept--there are those who use religion for good and those who use it for evil. Religion is not good or evil within itself--it only has the "power" given to it by the practioner.

If this movie makes one question his Christian faith, then the doubts are more deep-seeded than anything in a SCOOBY-DOO story will ever bring out. If SCOOBY-DOO makes you question your faith, see a priest or a therapist.

2 out of 5 stars Wicca dogma in Scooby Doo???.......2006-11-23

I saw most of this movie with my children; they watching a little afternoon TV while I cleaned. I was pretty surprised to see the content of the Wicca religion, and Wicca songs about Earth Wind and Fire sung by "nice girls" with vampire teeth. They made it sound like, "Oh we are Wicca, there is nothing wrong with that!" Another reviewer mentioned that this would never be tolerated if this movie included dogma from Judaism, Islam or Catholicism. I let them finish watching, because I wanted them to see the whole thing before I explained to them that many people in the world believe that Wicca is a religious venue for witchcraft. I am not sure if they caught the whole idea about Wicca from the movie, but you know, these tiny little minds are like sponges. Next thing you know, my daughter will be casting spells saying, "but mom, I saw it on Scooby Doo!" I agree with another reviewer that it should be clearly stated on this movie that it contains content about Wicca. I only saw it on TV, which I could have turned off. What of those who spent their good money on it and found out later that it includes positive teaching about paganism.

1 out of 5 stars Wicca Propaganda Film - Hello!?!?.......2006-11-02

Not for kids, unless you want to endoctrinate them into wicca.

4 out of 5 stars The ghost is real, not a masked person..........2006-10-13

Ok, from someone who partakes in _NO_ religion at all...so there!

0 spoilers.

This is the oddest Scooby-Doo i've ever seen compared to others. The character animation looks a tad bit more dramatic. The soundtrack and sound samples are much more mastered than other Scooby-Doo's. The plot is very well thought out and takes more than just a drooling smile to follow.

Now i like these elements i have listed so far, but 1 thing as mentioned by everybody else pulled 1 star from it for me...the ghost is real. In case you missed it, i'm not religious at all. However, a real ghost? No matter how many controversial elements one might find in a Scooby-Doo, a mask of some sort should be pulled away at the end (it must be so :-).

Now, for those of you that know something about Mr. Hanna or Mr. Barbera from their interviews, articles, books, etc., they _MIGHT_ of changed the plot so the ghost was not real and that's it. At some point however, for those who go looking hard and long enough, they will find what they are looking for. So the gang finally found it, so be it.

If you have children or a child and you choose not to show it to them, atleast watch it your adult-self. Scooby-Doo is a fantasy cartoon. Scooby-Doo has been portraying reality in it's very own fantasy all these years. It's really great to see the gang share with us, something alot of us consider fantasy, for themselves for a moment. If i wasn't so bent on seeing the mask flying off, i would of gave it a 5. Old habbits die hard :-).

I gave this movie one star because i didn't like it. It did not have a lot of hauntings and it only talked about dead cleberties. and where you can see there grave site. it was a disappointment.

      3 out of 5 stars Good Documentary.......2005-10-21

Unlike so many others, this is not about researchers trying to contact the spirit world. It is a documentary presentation of various stories and sites of hauntings and then you get tours of the gravesites of the stars (of course, Valentino is included). I did enjoy the DVD but did not feel compelled to watch it over and over. I would recommend it to those interested in this type of documentary.

3 out of 5 stars Ok DVD...but not that great.......2004-07-22

I love the DVD and found the Hollywood Ghosts and Gravesites very interesting, however, i think it truly left out a lot of other ghost folklore from CA. Also, I found the DVD lacking in ghosts. It had more gravesites than ghosts in my veiw. However, i liked the DVD but, i think it should had more ghosts in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Just like Mysteries and Scandles!!!.......2003-10-07

I found this documentary, Hollywood Ghosts and Gravesites to have exceeded all my expecations on the subject. The stories
told here are not new, just interesting. Just seeing all these
old Hollywood studios and movie star haunts was worth the cost
of the DVD itself. The longest section of this documentary is
the gravesites segment. This DVD clocks in at about 61 minutes.
Very well done and excellent production values.
Every self respecting star grave hunter should own this DVD.

      1 out of 5 stars So Bad it's Unwatchable.......2007-06-20

Just taking a moment to say that of the thousands of movies I've watched in my day this holds the title for the worst ever. I'd give it less than a one star rating but such is not possible. Jeez-o-whiz, this is such a piece of doo doo. It's a horror movie with no fright factor at all, the leads' acting is so atrocious that he has less range than a putt-putt course and his primary facial expression comprises of a furrowed brow and the eternal look of confusion. These annoyances are just a tip of the hefty iceberg that make this movie straight garbage.

The only power this flick seems to possess is the uncanny ability to protract time, making an hour and a half seem like a solid, bang-your-head-against-the-wall three hours.

Treat this picture like a rabid animal: avoid at all costs, but if you do happen to stumble across it- destroy it with extreme prejudice.

      4 out of 5 stars I love this movie..........2007-01-10

I am a big halloween fan so this movie fits in with my collection nicely. It is a good family flick.

      1 out of 5 stars DON' T BELIEVE!.......2006-03-15

Did I just watch a really long episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark on Nickelodeon? I guess that's what I get when I rent a horror movie that isn't rated R There was was nothing scary about this film at all. It mainly focused on some punk kid and his stupid pranks. They don't get to solve the mystery behind the ghost until the last 30 minutes of the film. What I also did'nt like about this movie was the kid had so much knowledge and equipment for creating pranks to scare people, that it seemed impossible. I'd like to say that there were some scenes of the movie where it was intresting, but there were'nt any! I found the whole movie very boring. I was so bored that I decided to surf the web while it was still playing .I would'nt even watch this crap if it were on television. We don't really get to see much of the real ghost. She just appears every now and then and stairs at a few people. The acting was so dumb and there were no actual effects at all.The story behind the ghost was SO stupid. I expected a lot more to it at the end, but nope. The grandfather acted like an ass and the kid was just a wuss. Overall this is one of those movies with a cool cover, but a stupid plot. Sorry to keep this review short, but I think I've already gotten my point across. Don't rent, buy, or even look at the cover of this BIG PIECE OF CRAP! Enough said!

      4 out of 5 stars Believe.......2006-02-17

Found this to be a good old fashioned ghost story. Recommend it to anyone who loves a good ghost story and with a bit of a romantic twist.
No blood or violence which makes it a nice change to watch.
The acting might not be up to scratch, but if you want to sit back, chill out and watch a 'ghost' story movie, watch this one.

Okay Jonny Copton we really don't care wether it was scary or not besides the little mermaid is in the horror section.
besides i'll bet the world anything that how you found that movie in the scary section was because it was sitting on the shelf beside a movie about your thoughts,mr.scary cherie and besides i want to see you sitting in the dark watching the exorcist all alone and a pair of scissors beside you.well wait thats not scary.besides i wonder if you were born on halloween at 12:00 i know i was .well believe was a great movie it didn't have to be scary to be good besides jonnny if a movie has some type of ghost in it it's going to be in the horror section even if the ghost could be a person uder a blanket saying

      5 out of 5 stars Ufo Movie.......2007-01-08

This is an extremely excellent movie and is so close to the truth its not funny. Why the stupid US Government still denies the exsistance of UFO's and their roll in the cover up of these things especially at Roswell and the denial of what happend at Roswell I will never know. There are so many people that have come forward to prove that this actually took place is astounding and it is high time they admitted the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Alien Conspiracy Film.......2001-11-14

The dramatic story of intelligence officer Jesse Marcel's controversial quest to determine if a UFO actually crashed outside of Roswell, New Mexico, in the summer of 1947, and whether or not the government engaged in a massive cover up.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I would not even bother renting it. For (very little) you can own this spectacular documentary that will keep you guessing at what really happened in Roswell. It's a must see film.

5 out of 5 stars Why won't they release this on DVD? It's too good!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-19

This is one of those rare, and virtually unknown, movies that really makes your brain fire on all cylinders. A fantastic cast that gives stunning performances, very well directed, an eerie but realistic atmosphere, and special effects that don't make you wince. Plus, it's a "true" story that portrays both sides most convincingly. This movie will please those who believe in extraterrestrial life and those who don't. Put all these elements together and you've got one helluva flick! Why the studio won't release this on DVD blows my mind. I've got an old VHS copy of it that I taped off TV...and it's nearly been played to oblivion. SEE THIS MOVIE IF YOU CAN!!!!

5 out of 5 stars THEIR TRUTH WAS OUT THERE!.......2007-01-31

Probably the best written UFO/Cover-up Movie to date, based on the
True Investigation by Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt. With a great
cast,an intelligent answer to the "Autopsy" TV Special shown at the
same time that tried to De-Bunk anyone with not only the questions but
alot of the answers to what occured in a New Mexico Desert in 1947.

4 out of 5 stars ROSWELL FLYING SAUCER CRASH. .......2006-06-29

This is a good movie to watch but one thing that I found odd is that the actor who plays the son of JESSE MARCEL in the movie seems to have an angry attitude toward his father's continued insistance that the Roswell saucer crash really happened and was covered up. In real interviews with the real JESSE MARCEL JR, the man seems to be very supportive of his father's continued insistance of the crash. In a way it seems as if this film was made by someone who wanted to support the idea that nothing happened rather than the idea that it did. I liked the true story alien adbuction movie FIRE IN THE SKY a little better than this one.

      5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2006-02-01

I thought this movie was very well done. I bought the DVD and was very pleased with how the subject matter was handled.
      Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars StarAngel.......2005-05-27

The fact that this movie even got made is a miracle. It's not perfect, but you have to realise how the US Gov't "intelligence" services (which we fund w/ our taxes) tried amazing disinformation, threats and lies to keep not only the honest folks of Roswell doubting their sanity, but all of America as well. Kyle Mac does a really fine job as Jesse Marcel who had to 'smile and lie' and at the same time either let others think he was crazy (couldn't tell the difference from indestructible unearthly 'living' metals from a weather balloon!?) or a big fat liar (collected boxes of this amazing stuff, then had to deny it). And the man had attained the rank of Major at the world's (then) ONLY heavy Bomb Army Air Force base in the world! The fine supporting cast via flashbacks add drama and accuracy to all of what the authors had for testimony...at that time. Since the July '47 Roswell was the final straw for the government and the oil industry- the covering up of Truth that we have galactic neighbors (who are smarter than us, but haven't destroyed us!), the CIA, DIA, NSA were all created to smother ALL future UFO sightings and truth. Go read some of the books on this as well as the other coverups. Welcome to the Future. And go see www.DisclosureProject.org too. Mindblowing, the covering up is still going on! You kids under 40 (ha,ha!) have to expose this now.

What is the story behind the real incident that inspired one of the most popular horror books and films of our time?

5 out of 5 stars The Amityville "Hoax's".......2007-08-07

This is a very fine telling of the events that were to become the most famous "haunting" of our time. On the night of Nov. 13,1974, drug crazed Ron Defeo Jr. shot and killed all five members of his family. After a short investigation, he was sent to jail and the house sold to the Lutz's family. After 28 days there the family fled in the middle of the night and said that demons and all manner of supernatural "things" forced them out of the house. Not long after, with Author Jay Anson They gave the world "The Amityville Horror" and made millions! Besides giving us the facts as told by the family this excellent program looks into the case and finds many things that don't add up in the story. A fine piece of reporting that shows this was one of the better "Hoax's" ever done on the American people. Well worth the time and money!

The dvd approaches you on two levels. The obvious first, telling you of 'Ghosts' and a few specific locations. It is not a series of indepth paranormal investagations, but rather a telling the stories of the apparent hauntings, both how they originated and what is being experienced now... which leads into the second, as a tourism DVD. What will you see if you travel here? What will you here if you stay the night there? Will something be watching you after you watch the DVD?
