An "elementary" Holmes collection.......2007-08-06

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S SHERLOCK HOLMES includes nine public domain mysteries from the 1930s and '40s. There's also an extra item on each of this set's three DVDs. (Note that James Bond author Ian Fleming plays Dr. Watson on two of these films.)

MYSTERY CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION is a related DVD set of budget-priced vintage who-dun-its that includes most of these titles. This one is sure to please all fans of murder mysteries.

Better than Laserlight & Madacy releases!.......2005-02-19

This first volume in the Alpha/Gotham DVD series of the 1954-55 SHERLOCK HOLMES TV show is superior to the similar Laserlight & Madacy releases.
The episodes still seem to come from videotape recordings of the 16mm prints, but this version is the best copy so far, the noticable artifacting in the other releases is much less here.
The same 16mm films seem to be the source for all of the DVDs.

Until someone finds the original negatives to this French produced show (for U.S. television), this will do.

Sherlock Holmes fans who have not seen this series will quickly fall in love with it. While the half-hour format does not allow time for intricate stories, the puzzles are still fun to solve.

Roland Howard plays Sherlock almost as well as the great Basil Rathbone, and at times you may think you are watching the classic 1940's movies.

The Sherlock Holmes English TV series.......2003-01-27

My wife and I both love the Rathbone movie series on Holmes and Watson. For a different take you should try the Ron Howard and Marion Crawford series. Holmes is more likeable and Watson is the star of the show, but both are very engaging to watch. Certainly worth the few dollars for several nights of entertainment. If you love Rathbone and hate Jeremy Brett, you should like this series.

Sharp & Clear presentation........2005-02-19

This Volume 3 is a surprisingly sharp & clear presentation of the 1954-55 SHERLOCK HOLMES TV series, much better that the presentation on the Madacy 20 episode DVD set.
This is also an improvement on Alpha/Gotham's first two volumes, which were mixed from acceptable to passable. These seem to be direct Film to DVD transfers, the first two volumes look like 3/4 video tape was used as the master source.

HOWEVER, be aware that the first episode on this disc, "RELUCTANT CARPENTER" is mastered from a splicy print. The other three episodes are quite clean.

Highly recommended over the Madacy release. I would choose these less-compressed 4 title DVDs over Madacy's crammed DVD set.

Still better than the Laserlight & Madacy releases.......2005-02-19

This second entry in the Alpha/Gotham DVD series of SHERLOCK HOLMES CLASSIC TV shows still has some episodes that look like they came from video tape, but they have much less compression artifacting than the Laserlight & Madacy DVDs.

#24 NIGHT TRAIN looks a little sharper on the Laserlight DVD, the artifacting on that release is distracting. The Madacy version has tearing & Artifacting. This Alpha/Gotham presentation looks a little softer (but not too soft), and has better compression DVD authoring. There is an annoying hair in the film projector for a minute or so in the first scene. Major DVD companies would have stopped the projector, cleaned it, and started over. In this case, someone blew it out as the film was running.

#10 MOTHER HUBBARD is currently not available elsewhere.

#37 UNLUCKY GAMBLER - I have not seen the Nostalgia Ventures edition of this, but Alpha/Gotham's copy is decent.

#01 CUNNINGHAM HERITAGE is also available from artifact ridden Madacy, these Alpha/Gotham copies look better. Cunningham Heritage should have been in the first set as it introduces Dr. Watson to Sherlock Holmes and was the first shown in the series.

Misrepresentation of product.......2007-09-07

This DVD contains four classic TV shows of Sherlock Holmes from the 1950s.
None of which star Christopher Lee as advertised. It is a poor quality transfer from an apparently deteriorated master. I have bought worse, but not recently. Don't waste your money. Golden Years of Classic Television: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1

Ronald Howard is wonderful!.......2006-07-26

He is a more personable Holmes than others who attempt him. I like these a lot. They're older, so there's some "obvious" acting (like when Holmes sits there for a moment turned to a character before addressing him...waiting for his cue?) but they are simply wonderful. I'm a fan of the Laurie R. King novels (The beekeepers aprentice, a monstrous regiment of women, etc...) and this is the Holmes (only much older) that I picture when I read them. He's a softer Holmes, more human somehow. Just more realistic to me. It's a good buy to see if you like Ronald Howard's version of Holmes. The complete series is available through this site as well. Just do a search on Ronald Howard, and you'll find it. But this is a good way to see if you like his version. I currently own this one, and plan on upgrading to the 20-movie set and post this one for sale, or give as a gift (since it's in great condition).
