5 out of 5 stars Hey Abbott!.......2007-09-02

Abbott and Costello are the best comedy duo, ever. This collection has some of their funnier movies as well as some of their "quieter" ones. Family fun for everyone. It's pure comedy and has non of that "blue" that's so popular with people today. If you want "funny", this is it! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies!!!.......2007-08-23

Great movies that my kids love. I had forgotten how funny Abbot & Costello are. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-08-11

Two DVD's, 8 films. Picture and film quality is as good as technology can make something this old. The balance between the films is uneven, but I guess every movie can't be a gem. A little pricey for what you get, actually. I remember watching these movies as a kid and being absolutely thrilled with them. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer will have you laughing in the aisles. The other movies have their moments, but don't expect more than an occasional chuckle.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27

I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

Predator wreaked havoc in the jungle and struck box-office gold, so Hollywood logic dictated that Predator 2 should raise hell in the big, bad city. Los Angeles, to be specific, and this near-future L.A. (circa 1997) is an ultra-violent playground for the invisibility-cloaked alien that hunted Arnold Schwarzenegger in the previous film. Scant explanation is given for the creature's return, and because Ah-nuld was busy making Total Recall, Danny Glover was awkwardly installed as the maverick cop (is there any other kind?) who defies a government goon (Gary Busey) to curtail the alien's inner-city killing spree. But why bother, when the victims are scummy Colombian drug lords? Don't look for intelligent answers; director Stephen Hopkins favors wall-to-wall action over sensible plotting, allowing Stan Winston's more prominently featured Predator to join the ranks of iconic movie monsters. And anticipating Alien vs. Predator in comic books and in theaters, there's a familiar-looking skull in the Predator's trophy case! --Jeff Shannon

Description

This electrifying action sequel unleashes the deadly invisible Predator in another jungle -- the urban jungle of Los Angeles. Danny Glover stars as a lieutenant who mistakenly concludes that mangled bodies found by the police are the work of feuding gangs. Instead, he finds himself confronting a savage alien who has come from a distant world to hunt humans for sport. Gary Busey and Ruben Blades co-star in this suspense-packed, high-tech thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Busey!!.......2007-08-31

Gary Busey steals the show as Peter Keys in this masterpiece. I love those guns at the end!! They are even better than the hypnotic guns used by Albert Finney in the movie "Looker." What a great movie!! It is full of vulgar language and Morton Downey Jr. hahahaha!! I can see why they didn't bring back Arnold. Why should they when they have the great acting talents of Busey and Downey Jr. lol.

5 out of 5 stars Hunting Season Begins, Again..........2007-06-16

3 years after "Predator" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger wowed audiences worldwide, 20th Century Fox had high hopes for even more box office success when they released "Predator 2". But this sequel wasn't without a major problem at first, when the film was to begin shooting, Arnold was busy filming "Total Recall" and unable to return for the sequel, leaving the creative team with a starring role that needed filling; instead of choosing yet another hulking muscle man to fill Arnold's shoes, Fox went with veteran actor Danny Glover who was having great success alongside Mel Gibson in the `Lethal Weapon' series. With a new actor in the lead role, a different director behind the camera, and a different type of story and location, would "Predator 2" find great success with audiences or would this be one hunt that was doomed to failure from the beginning?

"Predator 2" takes place in the year 1997, in Los Angeles during the middle of an intense heat and crime wave that is sweeping the city. While the people cope with the heat, the cops of the city are fighting a very deadly war on crime, but the fighting is getting a little easier. Because something is killing the drug dealers that are running L.A.; however, no one knows what the killer looks like. The cops are opting to simply let the drug dealers get wiped out by this unseen assassin, but Lt. Harrigan (Danny Glover) feels that there is something far worse than your average killer behind these murders, and when he comes face to face with this killer, he'll soon find out what it's like to be the predator's prey.

When Arnold had to pass on filming the sequel to "Predator", generally a sign of bad things to come for the movie, it was a surprise that Fox went away from the action hero type of actor to play the lead. Going against what logic would dictate, at least what would stand for logic in Hollywood (basically the `keep using what worked before' mentality), 20th Century Fox brought in Danny Glover (not exactly an action guy) to go one-on-one with the galaxy's fiercest hunter. To my surprise, and probably to most people as well, Glover functioned surprisingly well in this type of role, and delivered a very believable performance, especially in the action scenes with the predator. The main supporting cast consisting of Gary Busey and Bill Paxton were equally memorable in their roles; Busey as the government agent whose intention is to capture the predator no matter the cost, and Paxton as a newly transferred cop who loves nothing more than seeing action on the streets. All of the actors really delivered strong performances, which was nice to see in this type of movie. Having the actors actually take the material seriously even though it is science-fiction raised the quality of this movie up beyond your typical monster movie fare.

The story for the movie was well paced with plenty of plot developments keeping things moving, not just seeming like just a bunch of talk simply to fill in the time between action scenes. I enjoyed the change of location from your average jungle to the urban jungle of Los Angeles, giving the predator a different environment to adapt to and new prey to hunt. The story also explored some of the code of conduct for the predators, which was interesting; such as, they won't harm unarmed people, they won't kill pregnant women, and if they are beaten they will take their own life. It was nice to see that the creators of this franchise wanted the fans to gain more of an understanding of what these predators are and why they do what they do, so I'm glad they brought those elements into the story, to give them more character rather than being just bloodthirsty killers.

As was the case with the first film, and that of the `Alien' franchise, great kudos must be given to the costumes department, in particular Stan Winston's work on the predator suit. 20th Century Fox must have really wanted to make the predators into iconic monsters of modern cinema, because the creatures were given much more screen time in this film than they were in the first one. Clearly the choice to give more screen time to the predator paid off, since they have successfully joined the ranks of being one of Hollywood's greatest movie monsters/villains of all time, serving as a testament to the great work that Stan Winston and his team put into this creature's development.

Two interesting side notes regarding "Predator 2": one, at the end of the film when the defeated predator kills himself and Lt. Harrigan is left on the ship by himself, when he looks in the trophy case you see a skull of a xenomorph or `alien' from the `Alien' franchise planting the seeds for the inevitable showdown seen in "AVP: Alien Vs Predator". Two, actor Bill Paxton has been killed on screen by 3 of the biggest villains/monsters in movie history, and they are as follows: the Terminator ("The Terminator"), an alien ("Aliens"), and a predator ("Predator 2"). Just thought I'd share that useless bit of information with you all, so now you've learned something.

"Predator 2" managed to deliver to audiences an exciting thrill ride that fully equals the original film on every level, and to some may even be better than the original simply because you get to see more of the predator this time around, and the action is kicked up very early on. A definite must see for fans of the first film, the `Alien' franchise, or just action/monster movie fans in general.

"Predator 2" is rated R for violence, language, and brief nudity/sexuality.

1 out of 5 stars Calling all morons!.......2006-11-29

This sequel is so bad it's almost funny. Everything about this movie sucks--the acting, the direction, the plot. The original Predator was an o.k. movie and you can usually count on sequels to be weak, but it's shocking how lame this follow-up is. A studio actually funded this? Or, was this move a summer project for high school students in their A.V. club?

5 out of 5 stars I LOOOOVED THIS SEQUEL!!!.......2006-10-19

I'm not a huge fan of sequels, but, for my money, PREDATOR 2 is one of the few that works. Writers Jim and John Thomas took their creation which worked so well in the Ahhhnold original and brought the hunter to 1997 Los Angeles, a "different kind of jungle". They amped up the excitement, the weaponry, the carnage, the pacing so much that this is the most over-the-top film I can think of. As a matter of fact, the over-the-top'ness is what makes this so much fun! It bears no resemblance to reality whatsoever. It keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek through the Bill Paxton and Morton Downey Jr. characters, so that the almost constant action never gets too heavy. Danny Glover, the great Ruben Blades and Maria Conchita Alonso all get to crack wise, Kevin Peter Hall as the Predator mimes a very distinct personality into the creature, and Alan Silvestri's percussive music is astoundingly great! PREDATOR 2 is one of my favorite mindless popcorn action films.

The new two-disc Special Edition set contains a buncha extras: TWO commentary tracks, the first from Director Stephen Hopkins, the second from Writers Jim and John Thomas. There is a brand-new documentary on the making of the film, a slew of vintage featurettes, a heapin' helpin' of trailers and TV spots "He's in town, with a few days. . .TO KILL", full-length versions of the "Hard Core" TV segments (sans voiceover), and a behind-the-scenes still photo gallery.

Don't look for heavy-handed drama in PREDATOR 2. It's supposed to be fun!
Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Awful Acting.......2006-10-01

I found this DVD real cheap and bought it. I really tried hard to like the movie, but I just couldn't because the acting was incredibly bad, especially that of the bad guys causing havoc in the city. Even the guys who don't have lines display bad performances.

An hour into this movie you ask yourself why you torture yourself just to watch a bad sequal to a good movie. I broke this DVD and threw it out, something I've only done to 4-5 DVDs I felt needed to disappear off the face of the earth.

1 out of 5 stars I Paid 50c For This and I Still Feel I Was Ripped Off!.......2007-09-04

This is easily the worst invisible man movie ever made. In fact it would be up there competing for the worst movie of any topic ever made. I'm a hug fan of the invisible man genre (I've got two Listmania lists going on these stories) and there also seems to be a lot of other people out there who are as well. This movie is a disgrace to the invisibility genre though, don't waste your money. You can get this movie with nine other low budget movies (released through Payless, which you can buy in many a $2 dollar store in Australia and maybe elsewhere) for $4.95. That makes this movie 49 and a half cents but seriously it is not worth that money, I very much have buyers remorse after purchasing this.

Pathetic special effects and acting mean we don't really see anything you normally do in an invisible man movie. The directors just took the lazy approach and had the actor victims pretending they were being choked in performances where a five year old could act better. There's no items in the vicinity getting knocked over by no one that the eye can see or anything like this during the murders. A few vases get thrown at the cops but you only see their bases before their thrown. These actors obviously had none of the clearing a building scene with weapons drawn training that police have given the actors in every other police movie. It's amazing these police weren't killed by visible bad guys before they got this case. Not that the invisible man makes much of an appearance in this more about a cop whose girl wants him to get a job with better hours storyline.

How annoying is the background score and sound effects? I think they put the whole budget into making the movie's poster and had nothing left to spend on the film.

If you are wondering what the plot to this movie is all about it is basically; a guy is mentally abused by his mother who never wanted him and definitely never wanted her friends to see him. He snaps and strangles her one day and spends his days reading self help books in prison. A prison guard rips up his books and gives him a good backhand when he tries to hit him for doing so which seems to push him over the edge. Now we are left to assume he got the knowledge to become invisible from these books because there's no other reason given but the next minute he's invisible and escaped from prison. Women who testified against him are being strangled and the police put out all efforts to stop his rampage.

There's plenty of great invisible man movies out there, give this a miss and get one of those instead!

2 out of 5 stars ESP And Modern Dance Don't Mix.......2006-05-03

This is a turgid little piece of melodramatic nonsense featuring some extremely bad acting (from people who should really know better), a dreadful script, and some of the worst special effects since "Plan 9."

The basic premise is that Roger Sands, an ultra-brainy lunatic with maternal abandonment issues, studies ESP and learns to become invisible at which point he starts stalking women who remind him of his mother. He has numerous flashbacks of his mom, and even visits her in the cemetery, where they have a dialogue that explains the background for the film in what is one of the most trite of all plot devices. I should really mention that the special effects in this film will, in all likelihood, make you laugh out loud, with the best of the bunch being the ESP-induced invisibility attainment via an effect that is straight out of the transporter room from "Star Trek," only not as well done.

The detective "heroes" in the film are universally unlikable, but at least one of them (Robert Foxworth) dates Stephanie Powers, who engages in numerous diversionary scenes that pad the plot immensely (please especially note the cake-baking in a mink scene.) I suppose the biggest star power in the movie has to be Elke Sommer, who plays a rich alcoholic nag in some of the most ridiculous costumes I have seen in a while. (One makes her look like the inmate.)

I should note in an effort to add nuance (or at least running time) to the film, there is a subplot about a dancer in a modern dance production that is shown for far too long. I am not a fan of musicals, and I am definitely not a fan of modern dance, so you might suspect that I would really dislike faux-modern dance stage musicals presented at length within a bad supernatural thriller from the 1970s. You would be right. This production is painful to endure, and you will be relieved when Foxworth mercifully jumps onstage and stops it.

Truly this is a poorly made film that is about as campy as you can get. Nonetheless I give it two stars for having some unintentionally entertaining moments as well as laugh-out-loud campy special effects, particularly in the finale where the disembodied voice yells "I never wanted to hurt you, Mama," which is clearly a lie, providing an even weaker resolution to an already weak film.

2 out of 5 stars Just Another Invisible Man.......2006-02-23

I have no clue knowing how many movies have been made about invisible people. However, most of them have been a waste of time. This 1976 movie falls in the category of time waster, though it does feature a stellar cast.

Roger Sands (Frank Ashmore) is a convicted killer sitting in prison. Roger has developed his mental powers so that he can do miraculous things, like turning mattresses upside down, knocking a gun from a person's hand, and (surprise!) turning invisible. After watching this movie, I realize that turning invisible is a good talent to have in prison.

Roger uses a "Star Trek" sparkly effect to make himself invisible one day, and then promptly escapes from prison. Soon Roger is having a good time killing women who look like his mother, and any men who get in his way. Lt. Charles Barrett (Robert Foxworth) has been assigned to investigate the murders. Barrett has a really active role in this movie. He runs around a lot and puts up with his goofy wife Candy (Stefanie Powers). Actually, Barrett could have been absent for most of the movie, but he is the character the director decided to use as the protagonist. He does survive Roger Sands and Candy, so perhaps he was a good choice.

In all the running about we see Elke Sommer, Queenie Smith ("Foul Play" and numerous other roles), Robert Hoy and numerous other well-known character actors. The movie is filled with experienced acting talent. Unfortunately, all the acting talent struggles to make anything of this movie. The acting is frequently overdone, and often reminds me of a comedy I once saw where the actors were supposed to "emote."

There were moments in this movie that seemed to make no sense at all. For example, when Sands goes on a yacht in scuba gear, why is he visible when he has been invisible for most of the movie? When Sands comes out of the ocean a short time later, he turns himself and his scuba gear invisible, so I know he could do it.

The movie also uses an ultra-cheesy effect to let you know when Sands is using his power; Sands' eyes have lights animated on them. Gee, it was so nice to have those annoying lights with the funky sound effects to match to let me know when Sands was using his power. I was unable to tell when the books, mattress and guns were flying around. Speaking of annoyance, Lt. Charles Barrett's sidekick (Detective Hill I believe, played by Mark Slade) kept clicking his pen. I wanted to smack his sidekick, and then I wanted to smack Barrett for letting him click that pen.

The only bright spot in this movie was Stefanie Powers. She stole every scene she was in, and laid the groundwork for her role in "Hart to Hart" and other shows. I would watch this movie again just to watch her.

This movie, which has gone under the titles "The Astral Factor" and "Invisible Stranger: The Astral Factor," is just not worth watching unless you are a fan of invisible people movies or Stefanie Powers. Everyone else will find that this movie adds little to the horror or science fiction genres.
