Ah, Barbra. Of all her onscreen personas, she sparkles in none as she does in her role as 1930s comedian Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl. Portraying the life of this star of stage and radio, Brice preens and prances and sings, captivating her audience both onscreen and off. Fanny Brice started life on the Lower East Side of New York, the daughter of a Jewish saloon owner. Not the prettiest girl around, Brice still managed to quickly rise to stardom as a performer in the Ziegfield Follies. A shrewd, obstinate woman, Brice dictated her own success story on stage; things were a different matter in romance. Falling hard for the stunning Nick Arnstein (suavely played by Omar Sharif), Brice must navigate a difficult marriage. While kids may love the tunes (which include the now-infamous "People," as in "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world"), the plot is definitely adult-oriented. Enjoy this one, but don't go too far out of your way for the sequel, Funny Lady. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Barbra At Her Best.......2007-06-29

The vehicle that made Barbra Streisand a major superstar. From Broadway acclaim, to her 1968 Academy Award winning performance, "Funny Girl" is Barbra Streisand. When she sings its most familiar number "People", it seems all time stands still. And to date, there still is no one else who can touch that song but Barbra. As the popular comedic singer/actress Fanny Brice, we're given a lesson of survival through adversity. And Omar Sharif's finest hour since his appearance in "Doctor Zhivago" as Fanny's gambling addicted first husband Nicky Arnstein. You so much want to see these two succeed as a couple; but alas, it just wasn't to be.

Another standout is the finale, as Barbra so convincingly sings "My Man" with every award winning emotion imaginable. A note of trivia, Barbra Streisand won her 1968 Best Actress Oscar in a tie with Katherine Hepburn for her grand performance in "The Lion In Winter". An extreme rarity in Oscar history, having only happened once before back in the 1930s.

3 out of 5 stars MUST SEE - Once.......2007-05-17

This used to be one of my favorite movies. The songs are spectacular, and the telling of Fanny Brice's rise to stardom is a lot of fun. Once she has it all, the movie tends to drag. It's an interesting perspective on how we might look at life, however - it's the struggle to get somewhere that most intrigues us. Once we get there, it's no fun anymore. That's why this is a must see once movie - and you will want a CD of the music.

4 out of 5 stars BARBRA AT HER ULTIMATE BEST.......2007-05-03

"FUNNY GIRL" is arguably Barbra Streisand's best film; probably because, as Fanny Brice, Barbra was human and
vulnerable; qualities she has rarely displayed on screen since. (In "THE WAY WE WERE", another three handkerchief weepie, she comes close.) "FUNNY GIRL" is one of my favorite movies from my teen-age years, but I certainly see it differently as an adult.
As a musical biopic, "FUNNY GIRL" is a mixed bag. Several of the best songs from the original Broadway production, noteably "Coronet Man," "Who Are You Now?" and "The Music That Makes Me Dance", are absent from the film version. This is probably due to director William Wyler's inexperience with musicals. Composer Jule Styne was reportedly furious about the musical omissions. Herbert Ross directed the musical numbers that did survive, Wyler did the rest. Somehow, though, Barbra's amazing charisma and the spirit of Fanny Brice herself carry the viewer over numerous rough spots.
The film is best when depicting Fanny's tremendous drive and deterimination to succeed in show-business, which mirrors Barbra's own. Whereas Barbra's quest for perfection and control made her an untouchable, unreachable star, I suspect Fanny always essentially stayed a kid from Brooklyn. Nobody from show-biz came pounding on Fanny Brice's door. So, Fanny opened doors herself, and paved the way for generations of unconventional, talented funny girls after her. If Fanny had lived in our generation, she would have undoubtedly earned a top spot on "Saturday Night Live" or something similar. She did become a top star of the Zigfeld Follies, but on her own terms, I'll bet. In the musical, she wants the audience to laugh with her instead of at her. So, she sticks a pillow under a wedding gown and turns a lavish Zigfeld production number into a comic farce. She feels the wrath of the Great Zigfeld (Walter Pidgeon) immediately afterwards, but even he admits her comic instincts were brilliant. He hated it, but the audience loved it.
In terms of depicting Fanny's less than brilliant private life, the musical is a sketchy and inaccurrate mess. Fanny was briefly married to Harold White before she met and married gambler/con man Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif).
So, Nick was Fanny's second, not first, husband. But the audience is not likely to quibble over the facts. When
Barbra sings "Don't Rain On My Parade" and Fanny Brice's signature song "My Man", the movie is sheer, absolute, bliss.
The picture and sound quality, and the Interactive Menu, on the DVD are superb. This is a restored print.
Barbra has often said that "FUNNY GIRL" is her favorite movie. Sadly, there is no Audio Commentary. If Barbra would (please!) someday do an Audio Commentary for another DVD edition, then the audience would truly be "the luckiest people in the world!" Oh, Barbra tied with Katharine Hepburn in "The Lion In Winter" for "Best Actress" of 1968-- the only "Best Actress Tie" in the history of the Academy Awards.
To see the real Fanny Brice on film, check out 1938's "EVERYBODY SING" from MGM. I don't know if it is out on DVD. Fanny plays Olga, the Yiddish maid to Judy Garland's daffy theatrical family. Billie Burke (Glinda in "THE WIZARD OF OZ", and widow of Fanny's former boss Florenz Zigfeld) plays the scatter-brained mother.
It's Judy Garland's show, but Fanny proves she is a funny girl when she gets into the act as her celebrated Baby Snooks character. Barbra is dressed as Baby Snooks in "FUNNY GIRL" in the scene where reporters ask Fanny about Nick Arnstein's criminal activities. She answers back in comical, Baby Snooks fashion until one reporter asks a question that hits a raw, emotional nerve.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed.......2007-03-31

This movie is beautiful and entertaining. I have seen it 8 times and never miss it when it is on TV. Omar is so gorgeous to look at and makes a perfect Nick. Barbra shows off her voice in many dimensions and proves what a great singer she is. Most of us did not grow up with Fanny Brice except on the radio so her life was a mystery. It always seemed funny but there was plenty of heartbreak. I know the producers took many liberties in depicting her life but I think we all get the gist.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any music artist!.......2007-03-28

I saw this movie in theatres decades ago, and am still singing "Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady" to my husband! .. it's a wonderful film, extremely well acted, riveting performances by Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif.. unforgettable lyrics and melodies.. This movie is in my Top 10 of all time favorites! One of the things I love about this film ~ it's not total singing throught the entire film ~ plenty of acting and scenes to make it a super A+ film !

Silas Marner, a member of a strict religious community, is wrongly accused of theft and has no choice but to move to a faraway village. For 15 years he lives alone, hoarding the money he makes from his weaving and gaining a reputation as a recluse, a miser, and perhaps even a witch. Marner's life changes dramatically one Christmas season, when his gold is stolen and a mysterious woman dies in the woods outside his cottage. She leaves behind a child that Marner, to the surprise of the other villagers, takes into his home to raise as his daughter. The arrival of the infant, whom he names Eppie after his mother, transforms Marner. His bitterness evaporates; he no longer cares about his lost money; and he commits himself completely to his adopted child, who grows up into a loving and beautiful daughter. But Marner's happiness may be threatened, because Eppie is really the daughter of the local squire, who was secretly married to the woman whose body Marner discovered. Remarried, but childless, the squire decides he wants to claim Eppie as his own.

Ben Kingsley gives a subtle and moving performance as the simple weaver, and a strong cast gives him ample support in this 1985 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's novel. Silas Marner is not particularly complex--it's certainly a more modest undertaking than Eliot's most famous novel, Middlemarch--but this sentimental Victorian tale, filled with historical detail, potential tragedy, heartless villains, and the redeeming power of childhood, makes for a very satisfying film. --Simon Leake

Description

Silas Marner was a man who had everything - until he lost it all. Falsely accused of theft and driven out of his town, Silas starts life anew. One day, upon arriving home, he discovers a foundling child asleep on the hearth. Could this young girl be the redemption to love and happiness that Silas has been looking for?

5 out of 5 stars Silas Marner, The Weaver of Raveloe.......2007-08-27

George Eliot's classic, Silas Marner, is masterfully recreated by the BBC, and the character of Marner is aptly performed by veterian actor and Academy Award winner, Ben Kingsley. This charming story is about a man, Silas Marner, who is wrongly accused of theft and is then ostracized by his religious community. Silas takes up residence in a faraway town, Raveloe, continuing his means of livelyhood as a weaver. Marner now becomes a recluse and a miser, his gold becoming an obsession. However the weaver's gold is stolen, further embittering him. But one night a golden curly haired toddler, following the untimely death of her mother, wonders into Silas Marner's life. This little elphin baby girl, who Silas names Eppie after his mother, replaces his obsession with gold and becomes the love and dedication of his life. The love for and affection of this child has a transforming effect upon Marner who regains his humanity in a most delightful way. For a brief period Silas's happiness is threatened by the father who in his pride and fear originally failed to recognize his daughter as his own. But the warm debth of tender love between Silas Marner and Eppie is too strong to be broken. This story of Redemption ends with the marriage of Eppie to a fine young man, and the three, "live happily ever after".Silas Marner, The Weaver of Raveloe.

4 out of 5 stars George Elliot's classic as a movie.......2007-08-24

This period piece is well acted. It is an excellent adaptation of the novel but having read the novel makes it a bit easier to follow. Ben Kingsley is excellent! This movie does not drag, is not overly long or overly dramatic. Ms Elliot (Elliot was a pen name for Maryann Evans) was a terrific author and this is one memorable adaptation from BBC. I would give it 4 and a 1/2 stars if I could.

3 out of 5 stars Silas Marner.......2007-05-14

A good production and true to the Elliot novel. Ben Kingsley was good, but without having read the book it would have been difficult to follow.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant acting.......2006-08-19

Compare this movie with it's look-alike "A Simple Twist of Fate." I much preferred this one - the passionate original story line and the ending.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful adaptation.......2004-10-17

This is a fantastic, and very accurate adaptation of George Eliot's novelette, Silas Marner. The acting is superb, and with its fairy-tale like quality, very enchanting. One of Eliot's most creative pieces, often wasted on the young who cannot appreciate the storyline, it becomes more endearing as you age! This definitely needs to come out on DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Special Feature.......2007-09-12

I love this show, I watched all 10 eps in 2 nights...but I was disapointed with the special features. The cast interviews are just the scripts and there is no bous footage at all. I am thinking about purchasing a region free dvd player and season 1 from the uk since they included the bonus footage there.

5 out of 5 stars Since when is TV supposed to be realistic?.......2007-08-30

I started watching this show on Logo and became so addicted I ordered the first 3 seasons from Amazon UK along with a $50 Region Free DVD player from Amazon US.

I agree with the majority of reveiws that state that this is a great show. To those who say it's not realistic....IT'S A TV SHOW!!! It's not supposed to be. Do you really want to sit and watch people who have an hour or so of association a day sitting in their cells? I don't think so.

The writing and acting are awesome and the show does exactly what TV is supposed to do...it entertains you.

5 out of 5 stars There's only one thing wrong with this.......2007-08-09

It leaves you crazy waiting for them to come out with season 2!!!!!!!
What on earth are they waiting for?! It was great being able to see and hear it un cut. I love seeing Nikki and Helen whenever I please. But please, hurry up with season 2 already!

5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-07-18

I have never written a review for a series before, but this one is so incredibly good that I had to do it.
I catched an episode of the second season of Bad Girls in Logo not too long ago and I was impressed by the quality of the writing, the storylines and the acting. I rented then then the first DVD of Series One and I was hooked.
This amazing show is one of the best I've seen on television. The stories are so real, it was hard to stop watching. It made me change a lot of preconceived ideas about life in prison. I have since purchased the first three seasons from Amazon UK and cannot be happier.
The DVDs I bought contain also a lot of extras, such as outtakes, deleted scenes and cast interviews.
I strongly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys a great quality drama.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-17

Absolutely love this series. Well written, well acted. Superb. One episode and you are hooked.

1 out of 5 stars Oh Milla..........2007-08-20

Kat is tough. She likes to have fun, sell guns and dreams of a better life. Her boyfriend, Big Al, is happy with the way things are. Dealing, being obnoxious and an all around P-I-G. But when Kat's dreams of living on the beach becomes a third wheel in her and Al's relationship, Al's hold on her tightens to the point of physical abuse and obsessive control.

Meanwhile, two familiars of Kat and Al's, Vic (Kat's lesbian friend) & Reilly (Al's Wingman), both want Kat--as their lovers. So the two decide to plot against Al, to kill him, that comes to nothing but allows both Liz & Reilly to form an unusual bond (This side story was the most interesting out of the whole movie, the only two who had chemistry).

While Al is cooling off in jail, Kat visits with Liz (a miss-casted and unimpressive performance by Aisha Tyler), a social worker who's been in the same position as Kat. Liz just wants to help Kat get out of a bad situation but as they talk about what happened, Kat's street sense comes into play, which doesn't allow for a complete stranger to help out another complete stranger--it's always a quid pro quo situation. So, she is resistant but eventually caves in and she let's Liz help her.

Ultimately, Kat decides to use her street skills and take matters into her own hands and manipulates those around her to do what she won't (not can't), which is to get rid of Big Al; and to get away with it, hands clean. It works, Al is implicated in a murder that he is innocent of and the last half of the film is a 'Who done it'. It wasn't Vic or Reilly, the most obvious, but Liz, who, in the end like (apparently) everybody in the film, wanted Kat as a lover. She gleefully tells Al that it was she who framed him and that he'll rot in jail for the rest of his life; and (gasp!)then tells Liz to get over it, leaving NYC for the beach.

Gritty film, I guess. Interesting plot, sure. Acting, mediocre at best. I was sorely disappointed, the storyline was ridiculous, trying too much. Trying to be urban yet dramatic, soulful yet earthy, cutting edge yet everyday man's plight. It doesn't work. The main characters lack chemistry, over acting or under acting, the two supporting actors (Reilly & Vic) are untapped potential, a typecasted Aisha Tyler who is out of place, and the over indulged scenes of violence and nudity are old and boring tactics. There is no moral to the story, just get what you want in any way possible. In Kat's words, her life had always been about what others wanted from her, always taking, never giving back (a line of thought which was interesting and was the underlying theme of the story).

While interesting, when in the right mood, this is a miss. And for a MJ fan, I was very disappointed. Trying too hard and reaching too far doesn't always get you the greatest performance or even a thought provoking idea.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece...Brilliantly Cast, Written, Directed, and Acted.......2007-08-20

I rented this DVD with no prior knowledge of its content and was thoroughly impressed by the cast and screenplay by first-time director Gary Lennon. I recall Milla Jojovich as being mildly amusing in "The Fifth Element", but she has matured into a devastatingly effective lead actress. Her chemistry with co-star Angus Macfayden (as "Big Al") is palpable, with steaming passion, violence, and finally a level of hate-revenge that rivals "Body Heat" or "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe". Her character, Kat,is a master manipulator and it is mesmerizing to watch her slowly gain control of her situation and punish those who have caused her harm.

Do not be mislead by the variation in critical response. This movie is absolutely superb. If clever dialog, brilliant acting, strong memorable characters, and a great story appeal to you, then I strongly suggest that you rent, borrow, buy, or steal a copy and see for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Milla... this was not good........2007-08-19

This movie was not good. I am a fan of Milla Jovovich but this was just not a good movie at all. The story was pretty crappy and I just found it to be a second rate straight to DVD film, which ultimately it was. I don't think it was the acting that was all that bad, the story just sucked and I found it to be really stupid. I think the writer had an idea of where he/she (not sure) wanted to go and it would have and could have been interesting but whoever actually wrote the script didn't do a very good job.

I wanted to like it but it just wasn't... good.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-07-16

Saw this movie with a bunch of friends not expecting anything. We heard it was good from another friend, and was not planning to watch the whole thing due to our later plans in the evening. Not only were we late to our engagement, but all of us enjoyed the twisted plot. It's a good movie and worth a 5 recommendation.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic crime drama posing as a revenge flick. .......2007-05-27

My expectations were low, but somehow this movie still managed to disappoint me.
"Nobody does revenge like a woman" says the DVD cover. This might lead one to think this is a revenge flick. Seems reasonable, doesn't it?
No such luck.
This movie tries so hard to be clever and dramatic and intense but fails in every way possible.
If you want to see Milla, google her name. Don't waste your money on this horrible, horrible movie.
Almost as disappointing as the movie are all of these reviews on here praising the movie. Have none of these people seen a good revenge flick or crime drama?

Viewers of this Hollywood-processed movie should prepare to suspend disbelief: the four prostitutes turned outlaws will have flimsy excuses for being adept in gun slinging, stunt riding, and world knowledge. But this Western trips over a poor script of laughable plot points (secret plans are left out for wandering eyes, loot is taken without resistance) and a story that sticks forever in second gear. Never better or worse than Young Guns, with these intelligent actresses only part of the scenery. Drew Barrymore comes off the best, along with James LeGros as a meek rancher. --Doug Thomas

Description

Madeleine Stowe, Andie MacDowell, Drew Barrymore and Mary Stuart Masterson star in the wild Western story of four fallen women on the run. Branded as outlaws, pursued by a posse and tracked by Pinkerton detectives, the four must ride together to stay alive. But when they're double crossed by a gang of ruthless desperados, the women decide it's time to stop running, and start fighting! BAD GIRLS is a rough-riding, straight-shooting, fun-filled adventure that writes a whole new chapter in the lore of the Western hero!

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes it's good to be bad!.......2007-02-26

Boy, I sure do love this movie! That's quite a statement as I generally don't care a whole lot for westerns. This one is a bit of a different sort of western, however. We get to see Madeline Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson AND Andie McDowell all in one film! I've never cared much for Drew Barrymore, but I concede she does a pretty good job in this movie.

Madeline Stowe still looks good today, but this movie was made in 1993, when she was @ the very apex of her beauty. On top of being gorgeous & having a "mystery" about her (which intoxicates me so!) she is also a bona-fide accomplished actress. It's great to see her go from a naieve woman in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS to being a tough-as-nails, no nonsense cowgirl in the present flick. She is a much more diverse actress than most women in Hollywood. Now if only she'd agree to a candlelight dinner with me.....

Anyway, this DVD has often been thought of as a female version of YOUNG GUNS. Well, perhaps. However, in my mind, BAD GIRLS is the far more entertaining of the two (I found YOUNG GUNS rather boring). Also, one nice thing about the film is that it is NOT a film that's just set about to glorify male-bashing. While it does set about to accurately depict examples of unfair treatment of 19th century women, it never becomes "preachy." Moreover, our cowgirls stumble across some nice fellas who help them out.

If you like westerns, you may or may not like this one. If you like un-conventional westerns where the main characters are pretty girls (not too many other movies can compete in this category), then this movie is a must. It was filmed in Texas and California & some of the screen shots had gorgeous scenery and a few of the sets really made me feel like I was back in the old west.

3 out of 5 stars This movie could of been way better........2007-02-16

I've seen this movie a couple of times over the years and thought it was decent. Like Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Bad Girls begins with the abuse of a prostitute whose vengeance sets the whole plot in motion. But in Bad Girls, plot development is synonymous with costume changes. Chaps, corsets, silks and flannel -- for women on the run who carry no baggage other than their historical baggage as former prostitutes, these four desperadoes scam more new outfits than a bevy of runway models. And at least one of them had to be packing a curling iron. But, okay, this is Hollywood after all, and what's the point of having four women starring in a movie if they don't at least look good, albeit illogical.

The really grievous problems with Bad Girls are its lack of plot and undeveloped characters. On the lam after the most trigger-happy of the bunch, Madeleine Stowe, kills a customer who's roughing up one of the other girls in the brothel, they have very little sense of purpose once they're on their own. With a vague plan of heading toward the Oregon Territory to run a sawmill, Bad Girls moves forward in episodic fashion as they encounter one difficulty (or love interest) after another. You can practically picture it as a weekly TV series that poses hour-long detours on the road to the elusive Oregon Territory. The barrenness of the plot would be less noticeable; however, if there were at least some solid characters to hang the story on. Stowe nicely plays the sternness of her character against the delicacy of her features but even her tough-gal posture is belittled when she is whipped by one man and rescued by another. Masterson, considering her range as an actress of intelligence and physical dexterity, is given surprisingly little to do. As for the others, MacDowell flirts and Barrymore pouts, though each does what she does very well.

The Cinematography is respectable, as is the directing for what the shooting schedule allowed. Not an extraordinary film, but one that entertains on one level. That and the sexual component really didn't need the exposure it received in this film. In other words it couldve been handled more tastefully, or axed altogether.

5 out of 5 stars You make me feel so good.......2007-01-14

A female centered Western - this movie kicks butt. I saw this as a teenager when it came out in 1994. Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore star as prostitutes on the run. They killed an abusive customer in a justifiable homicide, withdrew their money from the bank and set out for Oregon. Their money is in turn stolen by bank robbers. Oh, and Pinkerton detectives are chasing after them. It's awesome.

4 out of 5 stars an entertaining female version of Young Guns.......2006-12-19

that's how I view this movie... beautiful and popular actresses, lots of action, and a not-to-bad story line. This is one of those movies you can put in during a party and it's entertaining for any short amount of time people choose to look at it... and if you do decide to sit down and get into the movie, it makes it that much better.

This collection gives a good insight as to what it is the men and women of law enforcement must encounter every day. It gave me and my friends a new appriciation for what they do.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-07-17

I am quite the avid Cops fan, so I absolutely needed this set regardless of what other reviews for this product said. I was pretty disappointed because I have seen most of these calls, and they aren't too exciting. Moreover, they're mostly old, I mean really old. If your a huge Cops fan like me, go ahead get it, just because it's the only Cops DVDs available, but if you watch the show from time to time and it's not a must, then don't waste your money.

In response to Alan Russel's review: Europe isn't a country, nor are the states in Europe united so when it doesn't air in Germany it doesn't mean the rest of Europe.
It DOES air in the Netherlands for your information.

This was a waste of $26 plus shipping. The reasons are explained very well in the previous reviews. It may be a great buy in Europe where cops doesn't air but here in the US I could have just watched the late night reruns on FX and saved my money.

A vast improvement over its immediate predecessor, The Karate Kid III, this appealingly understated 1994 drama features a compelling performance by Hilary Swank, who would later win a Best Actress Oscar ® for her work in Boys Don't Cry. Swank plays 17-year-old Julie Pierce, the recently orphaned and troubled granddaughter of an old war buddy of Miyagi Yakuga (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, the lone holdover from the previous Karate Kid films). Harassed at school by adolescent boys under the sway of an evil coach (Michael Ironside), Julie reluctantly finds refuge in the calm teachings of Mr. Miyagi. While the film's violence is as contrived and silly as that of the other KK features, the script provides exotic compensations via a subplot set in a peaceful Buddhist monastery. Still, it's Morita's crafty professionalism and Swank's emotional authenticity that makes this film more watchable than anyone might have expected. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN THE OTHER SEQUELS! ENJOYABLE!.......2007-08-04

This film just edged out Karate Kid part 2 as a better movie. Pat Morita and Hilary Swank(in an early role)do their best in this fairly good and enjoyable sequel. I would give it 3 1/2 stars. The DVD transfer looks very good. I found the box set for the price of the first film,so it was worth buying the set.

2 out of 5 stars Missing Something.......2005-12-21

This movie was alright but it is seriously lacking something. I watched it when it came out on VHS and I kept on waiting for Daniel to show up or hell be mentioned but in this movie it was as though he never exsisted and isn't Daniel supposed to be living with his mentor in CA? So if this is the case and his mentor sent the grandmother to CA to his house shouldn't he have warned her about Daniel being there at least? They could have mentioned what happend to Daniel but in this movie they totally scratch him out and this movie is lacking because of it. Another thing is this movie doesn't touch the other three in any way shape or form. Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio had an on screen chemistry that you just couldn't denye was there and it made the movies all that much better but Pat and Hilary don't have that same chemisty that made Pat and Ralph such a great acting team and it shows in the movie. Also the other Karate Kid movies each have a theme to them especially the second one and this one leaves you with no theme what so ever except bullies always get what they deserve in the end which is a tad over done by this installment and the fight scene at the end is a little over done as I think they were aiming for the same affect they had in the Karate Kid II but they missed it by a long shot. Over all this movie is pretty good. Has some good moments but it should not have been a stand a lone movie all on its own in my opinion as it could have been much better then.

3 out of 5 stars I Wish I had Courage Like You!.......2005-11-04

Can anyone who has seen The Next Karate Kid please explain to me the nature of the film's villains? The look like a professional security force, they act like a WWF tag-team, they tromp around school like they've got full diplomatic immunity...they even have a drill sergeant. In high school. I just don't get it.

Anyway, these guys don't like young Julie Pierce, so they terrorize her repeatedly - and they even come dangerously close to what we, nowadays, would call "rape." All Julie wants is to be left alone with her beloved crippled hawk (Kes?), godammit! Julie's well-intentioned grandmother is at the end of her granny-rope, so she enlists the aid of old family friend Mr. Miyagi. Given that this is now the fourth time we've met Mr. Miyagi, and we've never once seen him interact with a teenage girl, the viewer is left to wonder if this arrangement is such a grand idea. But wouldn't you know it? The brusque and bouncy Julie slowly warms up to the adorable Mr. Miyagi, and yadda yadda, etc.

To quote one of the wise sages who comment at the IMDb, The Next Karate Kid is "the pits." Hilary Swank must cringe whenever she sees the flick pop up on cable; indeed, she's the one thing that makes The Next Karate Kid worth seeing. Not because she gives a particularly excellent performance (although she's better than the material deserves), but because this is such a GOOFY movie. For no good reason the flick takes a 20-minute detour into a freakin' monastery, for cryin' out loud! Plus this is a film in which Mr. Miyagi goes shopping for a PROM DRESS! Gee, anyone think we're just blatantly pandering to the "other" demographic at this point? Then just wait till the Hi - larious scene in which Mr. Miyagi walks in on Julie while she's changing...and he almost sees her boobies! Never thought I'd say it but...where's Daniel-san these days? Surely he could still be in need of some wise advice.

Anyway, Julie gets a date, grows some confidence, and kicks the ass of head bully #1. Also there's Michael Ironside as an evil high school sergeant who is apparently invisible to cops. Miyagi helps kick his butt at the end.

3 out of 5 stars I've got mixed feelings about this one.......2005-09-17

The Next Karate Kid (1994.) The fourth film in the Karate Kid series.

INTRODUCTION:
The Karate Kid was one of the greatest motion pictures of the eighties, no questions asked. The sequels to the film, while good, certainly lacked something in comparison to the original. There were three films in the series in the eighties. And then, in a rather odd and unexpected twist of fate, a fourth installment in the series came out of nowhere in the middle of then nineties. For the new installment, Ralph Macchio would not be returning. However, Pat Morita would be. How does this often forgotten film in the series go? To find out, keep reading.

OVERVIEW:
It's been several years since the classic Karate Kid films. Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) has taken a trip to Boston to meet with some Japanese-American war veterans, and while there stays with the widow of one of his deceased war buddies. He invites her to go and spend some time at his California house, and in the meantime stays in Boston with her granddaughter (Hilary Swank.) When this girl gets suspended from school, Miyagi begins teaching her karate, as a way of helping her deal with her problems. To make things worse, a new friend of hers at school is getting tormented by other guys from school led by a ruthless ex-military type (Michael Ironside.) The young heroine returns to school following her suspension, changed dramatically following Miyagi's teachings.

REVIEW:
I have very mixed feelings about this film. First of all, the good. The acting in this film is very good. Pat Morita's portrayal of Miyagi is excellent, as it always is. Hilary Swank does a good job in her role, and Michael Ironside is fantastic as Kreese's replacement in the series. Bill Conti once again does the orchestration for the film, and I shouldn't have to tell you he did it well again. But, of course, there are a ton of negatives too. This installment in the series wasn't necessary. By this time the series was getting a bit played out, and this really did nothing to revive or build on the series. And needless to say, without Ralph Macchio the series really loses something. Miyagi is the only character this film has that the old ones did. And as a whole, the plot seems rehashed. I personally think this movie would have been better without the Karate Kid name attached. The film also features considerably less action than its predecessors - It's obvious the creators were going for a more family-oriented movie this time around, and as such, it isn't as violent as other entries in this series. Final verdict? This is a good movie. Not great, not horrible - just an average movie. It's worth watching, but don't be expecting a masterpiece on the same level as the original film.

DVD:
The DVD release of this film is pretty lame. Filmographies, trailers, and some DVD-ROM stuff (which requires a computer) are the ONLY extras you get. Take my advice and get the Karate Kid Collection box set instead - it's a better value than buying the movies separately.

OVERALL:
Overall, I think I have made my feelings clear. They're mixed when it comes to this movie. For everywhere this movie succeeds, it fails somewhere else. What we have here is a totally average product. It's worth watching at least once, but if you're looking for classic Karate Kid action, you're not gonna find it here.

Though well short of the classics he would go on to make with Budd Boetticher (Seven Men from Now, The Tall T, et al.), Man in the Saddle is measurably superior to most of Randolph Scott's other '50s Westerns. The script has enough characters, criss-crossed revenge subplots, and tortuous romances for a miniseries; yet somehow, within a B-movie running time, director André De Toth manages to give all of them enough attention so that the movie makes sense, even threatens to get really interesting. He also finds distinctive ways to stage standard set pieces like, say, a saloon shootout. And there's a cumulatively amazing fistfight that starts in a mountain cabin, totally uses up that set, then spills downhill through snowfield and waterfall. Randy's character is a more complicated fellow than usual, and the Scots-Canadian actor Alexander Knox, best known for his Oscar®-nominated turn as Woodrow Wilson, makes a creepily compelling range baron. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

In MAN IN THE SADDLE we see Randolph Scott in an archetypal role as Owen Merritt, a man of few words, unerring aim and unbreakable principles, who swallows his pride when the woman he loves marries for wealth. But when her wildly jealous husband vows to ruin Merritt's ranch, Merritt strikes back. A satisfying combination of action, romance, and breathtaking high-desert scenery, MAN IN THE SADDLE also features Tennessee Ernie Ford in a rare movie appearance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rattled by the rush........2007-07-13

This is a spectacular Western. I can easily see a day coming when Andre DeToth's star will be in the ascendant, and Boetticher's will have fallen into oblivion.

I recently saw almost all of Boetticher's westerns with Randolph Scott in a local theater, and you could tell people wanted to chuckle at all the "A man could do this" and "A man can do that" dialogue, but somehow had convinced themselves they were watching high art. But isn't Boetticher's macho code a form of paganism, of a self-serving survival of the fittest philosophy? Nowhere is this more apparent than in Seven Men From Now, where Gail Russell's husband is considered some sort of eunuch just because he's a nice guy, and he has to get shot in the back to prove his manhood. Then Randolph gets his girl, of course.

Andre DeToth's westerns are no different, meaning they also take place in a pagan world, except that through savvy highlighting and exaggeration, DeToth pushes the sex and violence of the genre into the forefront, forcing them on your attention and making them seem unheroic and ignoble. DeToth has a very distinctive style that is almost like a Bresson film on fast-forward -- the delivery of lines is near-robotic, the angles seem canted and off-kilter even when they're not, character is always in flux, and so is nature. What this does is create a world where events fly by almost too fast for the characters to process, yet this doesn't stop them from being sure of their goals, which upon reflection, would seem insane.

"If you're still thinking of Laurie, you're gonna get yourself killed!" one of Randolph's friends says before the final showdown. "My mind's clear," Randolph replies. The irony of this is that his mind is never clear. His battles make no sense. Ostensibly he's trying to start trouble with Alexander Knox, the biggest rancher in the territory, because Joan Leslie has left him for Knox and money. But -- SPOILERS AHEAD -- even after his nemesis is dead and Joan Leslie has forever severed ties with him, he still keeps fighting, like a clockwork toy that has been wound-up to go on forever.

Leslie herself is driven entirely by her own mercurial loins, fluctuating between Scott and Knox constantly. She's not worth killing a beetle over, let alone another human. In one scene she proudly escapes Knox's ranch by intimidating one of his henchmen with her expert marksmanship, but DeToth cleverly mutes the proto-feminist aspect of this. Considering that this woman is about as stable as the San Andreas faultline, the idea of her with a gun is about as appealing as Hilary Clinton with her finger on the button. Usually films with strong female heroines are seen as ahead of their time, but this one seems much closer to the truth, to me, of their fickle and mutable character, and how almost of all of human progress and aspiration is built on men beating each other senseless over their whims.

DeToth's direction throughout creates such an impression of unstoppable momentum and speed that you almost want to rush in there and start shooting yourself. And that is exactly the point. "Sitting on my porch night after night was getting boring anyway," Scott says, shortly before blowing a million holes in a cabin full of outlaws. Boredom is the enemy of all these people, their real fear, the shadow that stalks them and which they'll sell their souls to avoid. The paradoxical moral of this exhilarating movie, then, is just this -- in boredom lies salvation.

4 out of 5 stars "Man in the Saddle (1951) ... Randolph Scott ... Columbia Pictures Classic Westerns".......2007-04-08

Columbia Pictures presents "MAN IN THE SADDLE" (1951) (87 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Joan Leslie, Ellen Drew, Alexander Knox & John Russell. --- Directed by André De Toth and released in December 2, 1951, our story line and film, A rancher is forced to stand by as his girl friend is lured away by a wealthy neighboring rancher. When the neighbor is killed, Scott is accused of the murder, and must clear himself. After a blood-spattered fistfight with a gunslinger and several gun battles, Scott consoles himself with schoolteacher Ellen Drew. Based on a novel by Ernest Haycox, Man in the Saddle was the first of the lucrative collaborations between star Randolph Scott and producer Harry Joe Brown --- some of the stand outs of the film: seeing "Tennessee" Ernie Ford without a mustache singing "Man in the Saddle"; Alfonso Bedoya's too brief scenes as a cook; the color photography of the high country, and the fight scene there with John Russell --- Randy Scott's a 'peaceable man' in the tradition of Wild Bill Elliott, but don't provoke him you'll soon see the other side of the coin --- It becomes an open war after Richard Rober kills brothers Camerone Mitchell and Richard Crane who work for Scott, then everything breaks loose.

Under André De Toth (Director), Harry Joe Brown (Producer), Kenneth Gamet (Screenwriter), Ernest Haycox (Book Author), Charles Lawton (Cinematographer), George Duning (Composer (Music Score), Charles Nelson (Editor), George Brooks (Art Director) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (Owen Merritt), Joan Leslie (Laure Bidwell), Ellen Drew (Nan Melotte), Alexander Knox (Will Isham), Richard Rober (Fay Dutcher), John Russell (Hugh Clagg), Guinn "Big Boy" Williams (Bourke Prine), Alfonso Bedoya (Cultus Charley), Clem Bevans (Pay Lankershim), Cameron Mitchell (George Virk), Richard Crane (Juke Virk), Frank Sully (Lee Repp), George Lloyd (Tom Croker), Frank S. Hagney (Ned Bale), Don Beddoe (Love Bidwell), Grant Withers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, James Kirkwood (Sheriff Medary) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! (1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... "The Cariboo Trail" (1950), "The Nevadan" (1950), "Colt .45" (1950), "Santa Fe" (1951), "Sugarfoot" (1951), "Fort Worth" (1951), "Man in the Saddle" (1951), "Carson City" (1952), "The Man Behind the Gun" (1952), "Hangman's Knot" (1952), "Thunder over the Plains" (1953), "The Stranger Wore a Gun" (1953), "Ten Wanted Men" (1954), "Riding Shotgun" (1954), "The Bounty Hunter" (1954), "Rage at Dawn" (1955), "Tall Man Riding" (1955), "A Lawless Street" (1955), "Seven Men from Now" (1956), "Seventh Cavalry" (1956), "Decision at Sundown: (1957), "Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend" (1957), "The Tall T" (1957), "Buchanan Rides Alone" (1958), "Ride Lonesome" (1959), "Westbound" (1959), "Comanche Station" (1960) --- Scott's age seemed to matter little, they only came to see another Randolph Scott film and always got their money's worth --- Scott's films were good and getting better becoming classics --- so if you wonder "What Ever Happened To Randolph Scott", just rent or purchase one of his films and you'll see he's never left us.

4 out of 5 stars All action colorful Randolph Scott western from 1951.......2007-01-04

MAN IN THE SADDLE was the first of six westerns that Hungarian director Andre de Toth made with veteran western star Randolph Scott. No quite up to Scott's later collaboration with Bud Boetticher, which commenced in 1956 with the marvellous SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Nevertheless, MAN IN THE SADDLE is a very worthy contribution to the genre. This film also marked the first teaming of producer Harry Joe Brown, with Randolph Scott as associate producer and was known as a SCOTT-BROWN PRODUCTION.

The story was from a novel of the same name by Ernest Haycox. Owen Merritt (Scott) had lost his sweetheart Laurie (Joan Leslie) to local cattle baron Will Isham (Alexander Knox) Isham tries to buy out all the local ranchers by fair means or foul. Merritt resists being drawn into a fight for Laurie or over Isham's land grabbing venture fearing that it will be taken for sour grapes. Plenty of action on the way to the final showdown with Scott assisted by his ranch hands and close-neighbour Nan Melotte (Ellen Drew). The film is memorable for its wonderful night-time photography and a marvellous extended fight in a mountain shack between Merritt and Hugh Clagg (John Russell), which really did "bring the house down". Tennessee Ernie Ford makes a brief appearance and sings the title song. High quality transfer to DVD

2 out of 5 stars they did it.......2006-11-27

In most of erotic movies I use the fast forward between the sex parts. but in this movie they did it I have to fast forward through the sex parts. so the sex parts are too slow not well cast. the best thing is the cover of the DVD.

3 out of 5 stars I got this one because of the cover photo..........2006-07-13

I'm a sucker for two beautiful girls doing bad things together, and that cover photo promised at least one hot lesbian encounter on this video. And, in actuality, there were TWO girl/girl scenes. Sadly, neither one of them was particularly good.

The two girls on the box cover are at a sex club of sorts. Their scene together was the weaker of the two. Basically, this other girl is invited to the sex club, and once she arrives this guy tells her to check out the oriental girl and her blonde friend, who then put on a "show" together. It was more mechanical than it was erotic.

Later, the girl goes home and tells her girlfriend about it. Then they both start making out. Their scene was better, but still not all that great.

The video also includes a couple of scenes involving girls with GUYS, but I fast-searched through both of them so I really can't comment on either.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID GIRLS GONE WILD!.......2006-04-22

I have not bought this particular video, but I did buy another set of GGW videos a few months ago, and I COMPLETELY regret it. This is the worst purchasing experience I've ever had. Many people have complained about the horrible customer service at GGW. In my case, I paid extra on my order for speedy delivery. The charge went against my credit card, so they got immediate payment from me. My videos were supposed to have been delivered within a couple days, but it wound up taking a couple MONTHS instead! And only after I complained did they finally deliver them. But they still didn't reimburse me for the extra expense I had paid for the speedy delivery that never happened. And if that isn't bad enough, for the last month these jerks have been calling me every day, several times a day. I get calls at home, I get calls at work. They called me three times just today. This is harrassment! I'm right now researching what my legal options are because their incessant phone calls are making me crazy. Can you imagine having to explain unsolicited calls you're receiving at work from GGW? Unless you want to go through the hell I'm being put through, do yourself a favor and please avoid these sorry jerks!

2 out of 5 stars Bad Girls, Bad DVD.......2006-02-15

With a title like Bad Girls on expects a little more than the average Girls Gone Wild title. Sure, it is slightly different in format but it fails to deliver the goods.

There is very little of the standard flash for beads or t-shirt that has made this series what it is. There is some but it is not the main thrust of the disk. Instead we have interviews with some girls who give answers and flash a little. There are a couple of scenes with two girls but all but one are of the kiss and hug variety. The remaining one goes a little farther but is filmed to be almost all off camera. Definitely tame compared to earlier releases.

This is one of the mildest of the Girls Gone Wild series that I have ever seen. there are plenty of others in the series that are much better.

4 out of 5 stars I'm vert tempted by this whole series, but need OPINIONS.......2005-02-07
