Description
John Wayne is one of the most popular and recognizable leading men ever to hit the silver screen. Five memorable films capture his unforgettable career in the John Wayne: Screen Legend Collection. Co-starring an impressive roster of talent including Katharine Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott, these films highlight an American icon who will always be remembered as a true screen legend. Reap the Wild Wind Cecil B. DeMille directs John Wayne and Ray Milland as two sailors battling pirates and competing for the affections of a southern belle (Paulette Goddard) in 1840s Key West. The Spoilers John Wayne joins Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott in an all-star adventure classic about gold and greed in an Alaskan boomtown during the 1890s. The War Wagon A rancher (John Wayne) recruits a brash gunslinger (Kirk Douglas) along with a raucous crew of misfits and readies them to pull off one of the most impossible heists of all time. Hellfighters A Texan demolition specialist (John Wayne) battles a perilous oil-well fire and hopes to reunite with his daughter and the wife who left him 20 years ago. Rooster Cogburn The saga of True Grit continues as John Wayne reprises his role as a Deputy Marshall who helps a missionary (Katharine Hepburn) bring justice to the Wild West.
Customer Reviews:
Grab this supervalue!.......2007-09-09
Not a dud film here. Includes a good share of my favorite Wayne films(even if he didn't get top billing in the two from 1942) All are in color except for "The Spoilers", which should have been, to show off Marlene Dietrich's outfits, if for no other reason. No other woman, given the opportunity, came close as the ultimate dancehall queen(I'm sure Wayne would agree). "Reap the Wild Wind" and "Rooster Cogburn", made 33 years apart, are two of my favorite Wayne movies. Wayne seemed way too old and slow to be playing his character in "The War Wagon" This was after his one lung had been removed. But, Kirk Douglas, no spring chicken himself, helped make up for the Duke's relative lethargy. I found it an entertaining film. "Hellfighters" brought home the dangers and challenges of putting out oilwell fires, which became very relevant during the first Gulf War. Sure burned up a lot of fuel in that one! The DVD quality of all was excellent. My only regret is the lack of commentary features, but I can't really quibble for the price.
Very good collection HUGE difference in quality to note!!.......2007-07-11
Hello Folks,
This is a collection of films that have been out on DVD...being a fan of the Duke ..I just bought it anyway. I can say I am glad already because although Universal doesn't tout this...the print of ROOSTER COGBURN is a revelation compared to the previous available editions! The previously available DVD of that fine film had noticable grain , color problems, and annoying dirt etc. The transfer/print of Rooster Cogburn on this collection is striking in its improved look ( a tribute to legendary Cinematographer Harry Stradling Jr who photographed this splendid movie). I haven't compared The War Wagon and others yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they also were an improvement. I picked this up for under $20...and 5 John Wayne films for $4 each is a no brainer...
Happy 100th Duke ..long may you ride!!
Yeeehaaaaa
UPDATE: I just compared the War Wagon with the previously available edition and like Rooster..its a HUGE upgrade in picture quality...this set gets better and better...snap it up!
Very nice collection.......2007-07-10
For those wondering, I can confirm that Hellfighters, War Wagon, and Rooster Cogburn are all presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. That makes this collection a nice improvement over the previous non-anamorphic standalone versions of those DVDs. The other features (Reap the Wild Wind and The Spoilers) are in full-frame (1.33:1) format, which I believe was their original theatrical format.
The five films come on three disks:
1. Reap the Wild Wind
2. The Spoilers and The War Wagon (both on side A)
3. Hellfighters (side A) and Rooster Cogburn (side B)
The only extras are trailers (except for Hellfighters) and some John Wayne trivia on the inside of the packaging.

Marlene Dietrich...once again torn between John Wayne and Randolph Scott.......2007-08-14
In THE SPOILERS, we can once again enjoy the unusual star combination of Dietrich, Scott and Wayne in a rollicking adventure set against an Alaskan boom-town circa the 1890's. "The Spoilers" by Rex Beach had already been adapted for the screen several times, but this is the version most people are familiar with.
The town of Nome is at the height of the gold-rush, and saloon owner Cherry Malotte (Marlene Dietrich) becomes the object of desire in a vendetta between cheated miner Roy Glennister (John Wayne) and local kingpin Alexander McNamara (Randolph Scott).
Universal first combined Dietrich, Scott and Wayne in "Pittsburgh" (also released in 1942); their unusual screen chemistry plays out to maximum effect in THE SPOILERS, yet both movies are quite similar with their period settings and fiery love-duels for Dietrich's affection.
Marlene Dietrich gets to really cut loose with her character of Cherry Malotte, costumed in some outrageous Vera West creations. Adding some fun comedy is her wisecracking maid Idabelle (Marietta Canty). Margaret Lindsay is the stereotypical "good girl"--but with a twist.
Many reviewers have already talked about the climactic brawl between Wayne and Scott, so I won't step on anybody's toes. That said, it is a brilliantly-executed sequence, you can't even tell where the actors leave off and the stunt doubles take over.
Settle back with some hard-boiled eggs and enjoy this classic adventure romp! (Single-sided, dual-layer disc).
The Spoilers 1942.......2007-07-15
John Wayne (1907-1979) Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) and Randolph Scott (1898-1987) shine in this all-star adventure classic about gold and greed in a Alaskan boomtown during the 1890s . When honest ship Captain Roy Glennister (Wayne) get swindled out of his mine clime , he returns to seductive saloon singer Cherry Malote (Dietrich) for assistance in his battle with no-good town kingspin Alexander McNamara (Scott) . It's an adventure as wild as the Northwest Territory itself , featuring an all-out fight to the finish between Wayne and Scott that's considered one of the most spetacular action sequences ever filmed . High Quality Transfer .
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE LADY.......2007-04-26
THE SPOILERS is based on a novel written by Rex Beach The Spoilers. In 1942, it was already the fourth time Hollywood producers were adapting the book whose last adaptation was released in 1955. I sincerely would have liked to sing without limitation the praises of the film like all the precedent reviewers here but I honestly can't. Director Ray Enright was not John Ford nor Anthony Mann and all the Hollywood stars wouldn't have changed the fact that this movie is a good B-movie but not a masterpiece.
Don't misunderstand me, I've liked the film or, rather, I've liked certain aspects of THE SPOILERS. Marlene Dietrich's performance, for instance, is a reason to see the film, she's the real star here, John Wayne and Randolph Scott's parts being interesting, yes, but less important. I've also liked a few comic scenes such as the arrival of Jonathan Struve at the mine and his retreat in front of Al Dextry and his rifle Betsy. In this scene, Ray Enright reminds us of the time he was a gag writer for Mack Sennett. Finally, there is the well-known final fight between John Wayne and Randolph Scott : absolutely unrealistic but so cinematic.
A DVD zone Roy Bean.
Dietrich, Scott & Wayne star in this fast-paced mixture of adventure, romance and saloon brawls........2007-01-20
John Wayne may well be billed third behind Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott In this forth and best version of THE SPOILERS but it was Wayne's star that was in the ascendancy, most of Dietrich's best work was behind her and Scott from the mid 1940's on was mostly in above average B-Westerns. Also starring Harry Carey former cowboy star of hundreds of early westerns and a favourite of director John Ford.
THE SPOILERS was from a 1906 novel by Rex Beach the story is set in the mud splattered mining town of 1900 Nome, Alaska during the gold rush. Roy Glennister (John Wayne) and Al Dextry (Harry Carey) are co-owners of a gold mine financed by saloon owner Cherry Mallotte (Marlene Dierich). A crooked gold commissioner Alexander McNamara Randolph Scott sets out to steal Glennister's claim along with the love of Cherry! The climax is one of the best-filmed extended bar-room-brawls of all time. A fifth version was released in 1956 this time in color with Jeff Chandler and Rory Calhoun in the Glennister and McNamara roles.
Made in Yukon Territory, Canada 65 years ago, filmed in black & white and directed by Ray Enright. No doubt a five star western on its release; including the excellent opening sequences showing the very muddy streets of Nome. The end also has the much acclaimed fight sequence between Wayne and Scott, but in between some other parts of it don't quite pass the test of time on this Universal 2006 DVD Release.
Classic Wayne/Scott Teamup.......2006-10-31
Westerns greats John Wayne and Randolph Scott made two movies together. The second one was Pittsburgh. But the first was The Spoilers, the best known and most popular version of the classic Rex Beach novel about two strong men on a collision course with each other with Marlene Dietrich smack in the middle of them.
Wayne is a miner in Alaska who runs afoul of town boss Scott. Wayne has struck gold, and Scott is working overtime to cheat Wayne out of the claim or force him out. Both are in love with Dietrich. The two butt heads in one of the most famous fight scenes in movie history.
The movie has its flaws. It makes racist jokes at the expense of Dietrich's black maid, the nadir of which is Wayne in blackface pretending to be a black man. But this movie is a classic, rip-roaring, brawling Northern that set the standards for this subgenre of Westerns. This is a movie that has a secure place in history, regardless of how uncomfortable certain scenes to watch

Odd and depressing.......2003-05-13
I bought this movie strictly because of Gary Daniels. I find him to be an exceptionally good-looking and appealing guy, so just watching him is good entertainment for me.
This is definitely an odd movie for Gary. Gary is known for his martials arts skills, and therefore is typically in a movie where those skills are showcased. Here, he plays a character that doesn't even know how to fight. This is not a martial arts movie, but rather, a sci-fi movie. Even if you forget about the fact that it's not a typical Daniels movie, and gauge it just as a sci-fi movie, it's still a bit odd. The plot, and the movie's direction, are somewhat offbeat and jarring. (For example, I'm into sci-fi, but can't recall ever seeing in another movie something like the "dark shadow" in Spoiler. It's just weird. And the sudden disappearance of 20 years out of the main character's life is most jarring). It is also very depressing subject matter. This is definitely not a "feel-good" movie and has a very, very dark look and feel all the way through. Star Wars, it ain't. Watch this movie if you're into dark sci-fi. It was too dark for me.
More than any other movie of his to date, Gary gets an opportunity to act and stretch beyond his usual, constraining role of a revenge-seeking martial arts fighter. And he does well. Clearly, he took the part to prove he could do more, and he can.
Despite the relentless pummeling he gets, Gary looks remarkable in several scenes. (How can a guy this beautiful be unappealing to the eye?). There is one scene of him pumping iron shirtless, to showcase his outstanding physique. There's no love interest at all, which is a total waste of this man's looks, but then, given the subject matter, it makes sense to exclude it.
But mostly, you'll want to watch this movie only if you like very dark sci-fi.
Spoiler shall have you spoiled!.......2000-05-22
Rodger Mason (Gary Daniels) is convicted for a crime he did not commit, and sentenced to one year in prison. Determined to return to his daughter's side, he escapes and is recaptured and frozen for 26 years and again each time he is brought out of the freezer and escapes.
It's clear to see that this movie was made on a budget,. but for those of us who like budget films, this one ia true gem. British action hero Gary Daniels is at his best, mixing comedy with some very good acting.
This movie shall have every Gary Daniels fan, well and truly spoiled!
Spoiler definently spoiled!.......2000-04-15
This movie was such a waste. Here you have one of the best martial artists Gary Daniels in your movie but you have him play a regular guy and get beat up in every fight. You might as well have jet li be in a musical! This movie does have above average computer effects but even that didnt save it. Has a lame ending! If you want to see a good Gary Daniels movie see Bloodmoon , Cold Harvest, Fist of the Northstar. I think he took this role to improve on his acting ability, but we only watch his movies for action and martial arts. Hey Daniels get a better Agent!

Spoilers of the Plains.......2007-01-03
I find that most of the Roy Rogers films are very enjoyable to watch. It is kind of an adventuresome muscial. A little "Oklahoma" without Rogers and Hammerstein. In this case Rogers and Trigger.
Cold War Western.......2005-06-12
A rarity. This is one of two Roy Rogers' fifties westerns (the other being Bells of Coronado) with a Cold War theme. In this case, a fake oilman (under the services of an unnamed foreign power) tries to obtain the military secrets behind a classified rocket experiment in weather forecasting. The film is mildly entertaining and should please fans of the famous singing cowboy. Bad news: the copy used for the DVD is not the original 63 minutes print (as advertised in the box) but a 55 minute version, edited for TV.
Black and White.......2004-08-31
Format of Spoilers of the Plains is Black and White, not Color as
described under the "Product Details".
