Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars as good as the book.......2007-09-13

I loved the book and had to see the mini series. the mini series really nailed the whole approach of the book and Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were perfectly cast. I could watch it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Concerned about getting an edited version? Read here........2007-09-06

I recently bought this for my dad for his birthday. I remember watching it when I was younger and I always liked it, but the version we had was recorded from TV and was terrible quality, especially because it is now almost 20 years old. It is an excellent series, but you can decide that for yourself if you choose to buy it.

My decision to write this review is designed to help the potential buyer who doesn't want to get ripped off. I read most of the reviews before buying this product, and time and time again I came accross people who complained about purchasing an edited version with much of the content removed. Many of those reviews were old, so I didn't know if I was getting a newer version with the whole story of some other version that was edited. Hopefully this will help.

It appears that Amazon sells 2 versions of the DVD (I know nothing about the VHS versions so this review does not apply to them). The version I bought (ASIN B00005Y6YB) is listed as 360 minutes in length and is ranked in the top 500 in Amazon's top sellers. It was released by Hallmark. The DVD box lists the run time as 6 hours, which is what you would expect after removing commercials an 8 hour TV miniseries that is split into 4 parts. Amazon's price is listed as $8.49.

Another version of the series (ASIN B00003IPFK) is listed as 360 minutes as well, but is listed at about #48,000 in the top sellers and is priced at $13.75 (only available from independent vendors). Seeing how few people bought this version and how much more it costs, I would avoid it.

The version I bought is ASIN B00005Y6YB and it is complete. Perhaps the people who gave bad reviews did not receive the same version I bought. Amazon lists the same reviews for both, so it's possible that people gave poor reviews to a different version and those reviews got mixed in with the complete version's reviews. If you want to be sure you are getting the complete series without editing, I would recommend searching the ASIN so that you don't have to pick and choose between versions. Be sure you check when you get the product that you have the full 6 hour version. I hope this helps!Lonesome Dove

The critical and popular success of the Lonesome Dove miniseries just about ensured a sequel or three. The first spinoff, Return to Lonesome Dove, was rushed out without author Larry McMurtry's input, but Streets of Laredo, which McMurtry scripted from his own novel, returns us firmly to his brutal West. Legendary Texas Ranger Captain Woodrow Call (James Garner, who steps into the boots left by Tommy Lee Jones with comfortable assurance and understated courage) has turned bounty hunter, and he heads off on the bloody trail of vicious Mexican gunman Joey Garza (Alexis Cruz), a sadistic, angry south-of-the-border rebel without a cause. Lonesome Dove echoes through the story: Call's former trail hand Pea Eye Parker (Sam Shepard) is enlisted in his posse and Parker's wife, Lorena (Sissy Spacek in the role Diane Lane created in the original and the desert-worn soul of this story), follows in their wake with news that the psychopathic renegade Mox Mox (Kevin Conway), who once held her captive, is alive and back on the warpath.

McMurtry's Old West is not a pleasant place, and Streets of Laredo is not for the faint of heart. It's a lawless, racist, brutal world where might may not make right, but it certainly holds sway in isolated desert towns and lonely trails. Yet for all the tragedy and violence, McMurtry finds hope in the love and respect that breaks down racial barriers, holds families together, and creates new ones. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money.......2007-09-09

The movie has a great cast...but a great cast cannot do anything with a poorly written script and poor directing. There seemed to be confusion on whether this was going to be a serious adult western or a light hearted comedy western. The characters had no depth and were very uninteresting. Some of the characters were totally ridiculous. Lonesome Dove was a great movie....Street of Laredo should never have been made.

4 out of 5 stars a very sad story to end the great western saga.......2007-04-11

a story could be more concise and concentrated, but since it's the typical writing style of larry mcmurty, page after page blah, blah, blah were never tried very hard to omit wisely since the screenplay was co-written by the author again. james garner did a great performance in this final chapter of the lonesome dove. his height and weight looked more dominant and intimidating than what tommy lee jones could present on the screen.
what a sad and malicious story to end the legendary call, a larger-than-life western hero. can't believe lorena would have so many children. anyway, the ending was quite anti climax and also very sad and helpless.

3 out of 5 stars OK but Does not seem to Flow.......2006-10-31

Now actually, I thought that this movie was ok. I mean the replacement actors like James Garner as Capt. Call, Sam Shepard as Pea Eye, and Sissy Spacet as Lorena were good replacements; however, the plot is pretty dumb. I mean the whole point is hunting down a teenage killer Joey Garza, now why would Mcmurtry make this kid be the problem in this story? James Garner, as good as an actor he is did not really seem to measure up to TLJ. TLJ was born to play the part as Capt. Call, Garner's interpretation of Call was very friendly and more social than TLJ, this bothered me a little. I did however appreciate Sam Shepard. He seemed to be an imrovement over Tim Scott, Tim Scott just seemed to make the former deputy Pea Eye look like an idiot. All in all, the movie ends in a tragedy thus putting an end to Lonesome Dove. The odd parts of the movie as that Lorena and Pea Eye are married and that Newt Call is dead, as well as the Hat Creek Ranch. Personally, I liked Return to Lonesome Dove better because it had great parrallels to the original and the actors Jon Voight and Barbara Hershey did a good job playing their parts as Capt Call and Clara Allen. Also, Rick Schroeder and many of the original cast from the original are in it. Plus, it is made by Hollywood, so you know its good. I even thought that Return to Lonesome Dove was more exciting, there were more gun fights in the movie, and it flowed just like the original. Plus, the opening credits like the original were the same style as the ones in Return to Lonesome Dove, and basically the same music score and locations were once again showed. Well Streets of Laredo is worth seeing if you love to see Lonesome Dove, but I prefer Return to Lonesome Dove over Streets Laredo because it gave me the same feeling as I felt when I saw the original.

5 out of 5 stars james garner brings capt. call to life one more time.......2006-05-25

this is the real sequel to lonesome dove and man is it good. years after the first one ended, call(now retired and working as a bounty hunter) is called to bring in joey garza,a very young man who kills anytime he wants and to take on mox mox a man who likes to burn men, women, and children alive.
this is a very good production, and garner is just great as an older but still deadly woodrow call, check it out!

I have been searching for this DVD for a long time only to be told it was out of print or I could get it if I purchased the entire Lonesome Dove Series, which I already had all but the last one. This is a real good movie.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing sequel.......2007-06-16

Granted most sequels don't live up to the original, this one was a travesty. None of the characters behave remotely the same as in the original. I can easily imagine Tommy Lee Jones' Captain Call letting himself be shot rather than run thru sagebrush in his longjohns. And the character of Clara as played by Anjelica Huston would never act as neurotic and fearful as the Clara in this movie. They turned two very strong and memorable characters into weak and whiny non-entities.

And the ending is ridiculous, given his choices the one Newt makes is so out of character that it's sad. I originally railed against McMurtry since we watched these two series almost back to back recently. When I learned he had nothing to do with this waste of time I felt very relieved. No doubt he felt like he'd been assaulted when he first saw this 'sequel'.

Jon Voigt did okay with what was given to him, he's not Tommy Lee Jones but the main problem was the script. Similarly, Barbara Hershey convinced me she was whiny, petulant and abruptly unable to fend for herself. Louis Gossett shined, like he does no matter how bad the script, he's a very underrated actor in my opinion. And Nia Peeples is both convincing and attractive but her character was mishandled as well.

    **slight spoiler**

If you don't like to see violence done to children do not watch this movie. I was appalled at what happened; granted you have to make the audience really loathe the villain but that was just unnecessary.

I can't recommend this, even as a rental, if you've seen the original. If you haven't then none of my points will apply and you may enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars Damaged Package for DVD.......2007-01-06

4 out of 5 stars Return to Lonesome Dove.......2006-11-03

An excellent movie, close to -- but not quite -- as engrossing as the original. Jon Voight did a fine job. My original thought was that he would suffer by comparison with Tommy Lee Jones, but he handled the character beautifully. As in the original, supporting roles were well cast and added to the "flavor" of the movie and its time.

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars for trying so hard.......2006-10-03

I have returned to this mini-series after over a decade. I bought Lonesome Dove on DVD a while back and enjoyed it more than I did on my initial viewing. I was not as fond of "Return" when it first aired for a few reasons: The absence of Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrae, Tommy Lee Jones not returning, and a somewhat retreaded narrative. After watching "Return" again, these elements are still problematic but the movie tries so hard to re-capture the spirit of Lonesome Dove that it does manage to succeed on its own merit. One does wonder if, instead of replacing the missing cast members with new actors (or new characters in the case of William Petersen's McCrae like character for example) it had focused on what it did have, namely Rick Schroeder and the Hat Creek Outfit. There are some early appearances of some soon to be famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Dennis Haysbert. I might have liked this better if it had just been its own film instead of an over-reaching sequel.

    Description

Set in the Texas Republic in the early 1840's, a time in which three cultures - Anglo, Hispanic and Comanche - were in furious conflict over the same harsh land, we are introduced to Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, the heroes of LONESOME DOVE. Gus (David Arquette) and Call (Johnny Lee Miller) are young Rangers, ripe for adventure, and they get it with the Texas-Santa Fe expedition, and ill-conceived effort on the part of some freebooters and adventurers to capture Santa Fe and annex New Mexico. Led by the land pirate Caleb Cobb (F. Murray Abraham), and guided by the legendary Bigfoot Wallace (Keith Carradine) and his mountain-man friend Shadrach (Harry Dean Stanton), the group fights several engagements with the great Comanche warchief Buffalo Hump (Eric Schweig), is whittled down by the silent Apache, Gomez (Victor Aaron), and is captured without resistance by the Mexican army. Marched south by a resolute Mexican officer, Captain Salazar (Edward James Olmos), they survive bear attacks, ice storms, and the rigors of the barren desert known as the Jornada del Muerto. In the end, they arrive at the leper colony of San Lazaro, where black and white beans are drawn to determine which of the invaders will live an which will die. Accompanying the men on this trek is the colorful, amply fleshed whore known as the Great Western - Matilda Jane Roberts (Patricia Childress). In Austin, Gus meets the love of his life, Clara Forsythe (Jennifer Garner), and in San Lazaro, they encounter the great English lady, Lucinda Carey (Haviland Morris), who, in the startling climax, helps them survive a last encounter with the wild men, led by the great Comanche, Buffalo Hump.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as the Book.......2007-09-10

Finally a western based on a book that is actually as good as reading the book. The only complaint is that Buffalo Hump had no hump in the movie which is a huge part of the character. Overall great movie the actors did a great job portaying there characters.

2 out of 5 stars bad movie from a bad prequel of 'lonesome dove'.......2007-04-07

this is a ridiculous overkill of two fascinating characters in the 'lonesome dove'. the whole 2 dvds were just a bunch of idiots kept blabbering, small talking, yammering, blah, blah, blah from the first second to the last minute, just like mcmurty's novels, all the characters were just kept talking, talking, talking in meaningless small talks, almost talked your ears off. it's so controversial and contradictory to those two characters first appeared in 'lonesome dove', gus talked and talked, but call never talked like what was protrayed in this pathetic 'dead man's walk' and the 'comanchi moon', the more logic one is the real sequel, 'the street of loredo', at least gus was dead, and call remained not just silent but more quiet. by watching this horrible movie adaptation from the original book, scripted by the author, the whole movie was doomed to be horrible. because mcmurty simply couldn't omitted those yammering spread all over his original novel, page after page, blah, blah, blah, and we have to find the storyline among those conversations, dialogs, and dug them out of those garbage-like paragraphs. watching this movie was no different. those idiotic morons never kept their mouths shut. blabbering day and night, even during the comanchi attacks. what call showed in this movie and the novel could never developed into a character like what he had become in 'lonesome dove'. because from the very beginning, everybody just quacked and quacked like a school of chickens. drive me nuts. how come these two young characters portrayed in this blabbering novel would and could have developed into the profound older characters in the 'lonesome dove'? once a moron, a coward, an idiot, always would be a one, no matter how old you have become. adding experiences and sophistication in the aging process never happened to a moron, coward or an idiot. how could these two jokes would have survived in that harsh environment is simply beyond me. at least the 'lonesome dove' movie adaptation was close to what the novel read like. and 'the street of loredo' movie was also an adaptations from the novel.

5 out of 5 stars this is a "walk" worth taking.......2006-05-25

dead man's walk is a preqeal to lonesome dove and alows us to meet gus and call as young men. once again we are sent into adventure with these two friends. while i will say that this isn't as good as the first,it is still lightyears ahead on "return ot lonesome dove",and if you like that or just a good western this is one to have.

    4 out of 5 stars Old Western.......2006-03-14

My husband had been looking for this DVD for quite some time. He was happy when I found it at such a low price.

    4 out of 5 stars A great western with a great cast!.......2006-02-16

I really enjoyed this movie. I really enjoyed the unique plot and the wide ranging cast from everyone to F. Murray Abraham, Johnny Lee Miller, David Arqutte, Jennifer Garner Etc. I orginally watched this movie because I am a big fan of F. Murray Abraham, I really enjoyed him in the role of the villian. This is also the first movie I really ever saw Jennifer Garner in, so it is fun to see her young as well. I really liked Miller and Arqutte's portrayal of the two main characters, I thought it was very well done.

The only complaint I have about this movie is that it is pretty violent, and many of the minorarty characters ( native Americans and Mexicans) are not portrayed with respect. Maybe this was because who the main characters were and thier association with peoples of these cultures...I don't know.

Anyway, if you are looking for a good western, try this one!

Three seasons of dispensing his own brand of roundhouse-kicking justice have not slowed Texas Ranger Cordell Walker (Chuck Norris). As an appreciative observer remarks at one point during season 3, "You still have all the moves, Walker." Whether going undercover as a cocaine dealer in Miami or "delivering a little pain" against white supremacists, Russian mobsters, street gangs, IRA terrorists, heroin smugglers, or vengeful ex-convicts, Walker is "a damn one-man army" who "walks the walk and talks the talk." No one delivers Chuck-isms such as, "The bigger they are, the harder they hit" like Norris. Walker, Texas Ranger's third season is a bit edgier than seasons past. The language is a tad cruder and the action more graphic. The episode "The Juggernaut," about a wife beater terrorizing a woman's support group, is particularly rough stuff. In the explosive season opener, "Blown Apart," a Bible-quoting mad bomber unleashes a holocaust of fiery destruction that even Walker cannot defuse in time. Among the season's most memorable episodes is "Final Justice," in which Walker discovers that the man who killed his parents when he was a boy is still alive, leading to a most dangerous game in which Walker becomes the prey of this hunt-happy racist (portrayed by John Vernon, best known as Dean Wormer in Animal House). In "Deep Cover," Walker partners up with a female cop played by world champion kickboxer Kathy Long, who, as an actress, makes a great world champion kickboxer. "Blackout" opens intriguingly with an amnesiac Walker waking up in a casino office clad in a tuxedo, holding a gun and lying next to a dead body. Chuck Norris commentary would have been a real kick, but then again, he is a man of action, and this season does deliver for Walker fans. --Donald Liebenson

Clint Eastwood fired the original director, Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff), and took over the reins of this project himself. He may have had a point: this brutal, thoughtful western, a near-tragedy about a Civil War veteran whose past comes looking for him, is probably Eastwood's most mature frontier drama prior to the Oscar winning Unforgiven. Hoping to build a quiet life in a cooperative community of settlers, Eastwood's Wales blames himself when his enemies attack the homestead, and he has to revert to his warrior instincts to help fend off the threat. The jittery intensity of Sondra Locke (who would be Mrs. Eastwood, at least for a while), and the screen-filling charisma of the late Chief Dan George harmonize beautifully with Eastwood, who had finally figured out how to add depth and texture to his stock-in-trade Man of Steel persona. This one may be too short on action to satisfy fans of Eastwood's Dirty Harry films, or of the Italian westerns he made with Sergio Leone, but it's an honorable effort. --David Chute

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Outlaw Josey Wales.......2007-07-05

One of Eastwood's finest and most underrated directorial efforts, "Outlaw" leaves behind the actor's Man With No Name persona for a slightly more honorable, if no less laconic, hero out for vengeance. Though he's a wanted renegade with an agenda, Wales befriends a wry Cherokee, Lone Watie (George), and two settlers, old-timer Paula Trueman and sultry Sondra Locke. Cheated of his own family, Wales forms--and then must defend--a make-shift community where trust and respect are the founding pillars. Great acting, exquisite photography, and an engaging story about alliances make for a rousing, thoughtful Western. Open your door for this Outlaw.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great westerns.......2007-06-07

Until Dances with Wolves and then Eastwoods own Unforgiven this was the best western post 1970. Eastwood plays the title role who is a certainly a match for the man with no name, but unlike that character Josey Wales is not amoral, in fact quite the contrary.

This is the first movie that Eastwood directed that made people sit up and notice him as a filmmaker rather than an action hero. Some classic trademark Eastwood lines are in this film, perhaps the best of which is:

Bounty Hunter - "You're wanted Wales"
Josey Wales - "Reckon I'm right popular. You a Bounty Hunter?"
BH - "A man's got to do something for a living these days"
JW - "Dyin' ain't much of a livin' boy"

The difference with this film (over say the spagetti westerns) is that Eastwoods character gradually becomes part of a family like gang of people. Most noteably an aging Indian (played by Chief Dan George) which makes for some wonderfully understated comic moments. One of the strengths of this film is you do care what happens. Yes there are gun fights and people are killed but in the end there is a sort of reconcilliation.

Already by this stage of his career Eastwood had a regular team around him to make the film. Standout amongst which is Bruce Surtees cinematography. This really is beautiful looking film.

4 out of 5 stars Skip the politics, enjoy the movie.......2007-05-05

Reading many of these reviews you can't escape the infantile need so many dopes have to stake this movie with their own personal lingering issues about a variety of issues; U.S. foreign policy, the Civil War (or in their vernacular The War for Southern Independence), politically correct thinking and more. For the love of God, just enjoy the movie!
This is one of Clint's finer moments and is an irresistable blend of action, character, humor, and glorious Western eye candy. The dvd that I purchased was ten bucks and featured two documentaries about it, the first time I'd ever seen such behind-the-scenes bits about this great movie. A pretty good deal for the price.
Avoiding five stars because it is just a bit too long, due largely to the wholly cutting room floor scenes with the dreadful Sondra Locke and the credibility straining manner in which Josey avoids getting shot for the most part, it is still a highly enjoyable ride.
If you want to use this as a conduit for your own politics, spare the rest of us your armchair punditry and go start up a blog or start a thread on the Limbaugh website. For those who relish a great action packed Western, rent it, buy it, enjoy it. Clint doesn't get much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars One of Clint Eastwood's best action movies.......2007-04-13

"The Outlaw Josey Wales" gets 4-bones, the highest possible
rating in the "VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever" book of
reviews. So it's up there in the same rarified atmosphere as
    is Casablanca.

Although a little longer than most movies, it's rich
combination of action and pathos holds your interst. The last
scenes involving Josey's face off with indian chief Ten Bears
    are vintage Eastwood.

In the world of Walker, Texas Ranger, there's no problem that can't be solved with a big truck, a few roundhouse kicks, and the unflappable-bordering-on-comatose cool of martial-arts-champion-turned-B-movie-star Chuck Norris (Good Guys Wear Black, Forced Vengeance). As Texas Ranger Cordell "Cord" Walker, Norris helmed this fusion of karate chops and cowboy hats for nine seasons; for some reason, the last season is being released on DVD before any of the earlier ones. By this point, the show's formula--non-stop action and high drama with no concern for common sense or coherent storytelling--has been honed to a science. No opportunity for peril is overlooked, particularly when it affords Walker a heroic moment. In the season's first episode, firemen recoil from a burning building, but Walker strides in without a word (and without any of that cumbersome protective gear) to rescue a cute boy and his loyal dog. This is refined cheese: Bad guys wear evil on their sleeves and criminal masterminds act like morons whenever it's convenient to conclude the episode. Norris wisely keeps his dialogue to a minimum, usually curt commands to his multi-ethnic troupe of high-kicking Rangers (Clarence Gilyard Jr., Judson Mills, and Nia Peeples) or warm endearments to his beloved wife Alex (Sheree Wilson). Most episodes bounce between a couple of overlapping high-tension elements (say, arms dealers and an outbreak of the Ebola virus), though this season also features an epic four-episode arc about a villainous computer genius known as "The Chairman" (Michael Ironside, Scanners, Starship Troopers). The standard two-pronged attack can be amazingly effective; no matter how absurdly the characters may behave, the next stirring scene is underway before anyone has time to notice. It's as addictive as potato chips. Fans will find Walker, Texas Ranger: The Final Season crunchy and completely satisfying. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

Starring karate champion, Chuck Norris, WALKER, TEXAS RANGER centers around Cordell Walker, a contemporary Texas Ranger who is old-fashioned in his method of dealing with criminals, which entails using a lot of force. Joined by his partner, Jimmy Trivette, Walker does not shy away from his "eye for an eye" approach to law enforcement.

1 out of 5 stars A show for the Simple-Minded.......2007-02-13

If you want to watch something without thinking, select Walker, Texas Ranger - Final Season. There is nothing clever about it. 5' 3" Nia Peeples beats up 5 huge dirtbags and everyone gets arrested. Norris remains asleep throughout the episodes, as 9 years of shows has honed this ability. The shame is that the plots start out nicely, but no creativity is introduced from there. The cleverest criminal can't add 2 plus 2 in the last 5 minutes of the show and every episode ends with Texas Rangers out-kicking any number of people despite the possession of firearms. Poor acting, terrible dialog, complete predictability and frustrating repetition highlight this series. There is a good bit of action attempting to disguise all the other shortcomings, and apparently it succeeded for 9 years. Give credit where it is due, low budgets and entertaining the mindless worked for 9 years. And I really do like Nia Peeples, just not in the invincible role. If you prefer good acting and clever endings, steer clear.

This curiously overlooked drama from Clint Eastwood, released just after his Oscar triumph with Unforgiven, concerns a prisoner (Kevin Costner) on the lam with a kidnapped young boy as protection and the Texas Ranger (Eastwood) and federal agent (Laura Dern) on his tail. Eastwood manages a number of nice touches--the boy's innocence is nicely contrasted with Costner's soft-spoken desperado by the Casper Halloween costume he wears, and the law-enforcement officials look vaguely foolish, tooling around the countryside with a high-tech camper in tow. Eastwood gives a grizzled performance that, despite its seen-it-all surface, still feels fresh after all these years, and he coaxes surprisingly sensitive work out of Costner. But it's the sheer, modest scale of this piece that makes it so disarming--no planet lies in jeopardy, there are no cosmic make-or-break consequences here, just committed people doing their job and a well-meaning bad guy hoping things don't get too out of hand while he prevents them from doing it. --David Kronke

    Description

Double Academy Award winners' Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood confront each other from opposite sides of the law in A Perfect World, an acclaimed, multilayered manhunt saga (directed by Eastwood) that rumbles down Texas backroads toward a harrowing collision with fate. Costner plays Butch Haynes, a hardened prison escapee on the lam with a young hostage (T.J. Lowther in a remarkable film debut) who sees in Butch the father figure he never had. Eastwood is wily Texas Ranger Red Garnett, leading deputies and a criminologist (Laura Dern) in a statewide pursuit. Red knows every road and pothole in the Panhandle. What's more, he knows the elusive Haynes-because their paths have crossed before.

4 out of 5 stars Try with a little tenderness! .......2007-08-07

Texas, 1963. An ex con captures a boy as hostage, the police force is aware of that, but meanwhile a warm and tender relationship is built among this smart boy and this outlaw, until the fate makes its definitive judgment.

Clint Eastwood directed this uneven film, spattered of interesting vignettes here and there, but unprovided of dramatic consistency; however I would like to remark this is the best performance of Costner in his lifetime; extremely convincing in this hard role, due the multiple psychological turns inside this tormented and hopeless human being.

Laura Dern gives too a remarkable performance in that secondary role, the film is overlong, specially toward the end and that weakens the climax sequence; on the other hand the boy's character looks pretty stereotyped, but it's Costner's performance that leads this movie to safe waters and avoids it strands in the middle of the road.

4 out of 5 stars Prepare to have your heart touched........2007-03-10

Kevin Costner portrays an escaped convict who, for all of his shortcomings, has not lost his sense of humanity and compassion. Taking a young boy hostage to prevent the boy from harm the two become inseperable. A convict who hated his father and a hostage who never had one, a relationship blossoms between them. A good date movie.

4 out of 5 stars More Kevin Costner than Clint Eastwood.......2006-10-15

Just wanted to clarify that, for any Clint Eastwood fans. That said, Kevin Costner performs admirably in his role, as does the kid. Rather light, simple fare altogether, similar to many other Clint Eastwood movies. Nothing new under the sun here. But is that necessarily bad? I don't think so.

Somehow, this movie makes you cheer for an overgrown adult boy/man who is encouraging a six year-old to be a juvenile delinquent. That sounds bad, but it's actually not so bad. Costner, who plays an escaped convict, is a polite gentleman bandit on the order of Robin Hood and the like, a hero/villain. He abides by certain principles, and is not entirely wicked, unlike his fellow escapee, a cretinous goblin. Discerning the good versus the bad in his character is the whole point of the movie. We also learn what may have contributed to making him the way he is.

As for the boy, he has no father and was being raised by a strict single mom that did not let him do hardly anything that has any fun in it--for religious reasons, apparently. He was in dire need of a father figure, and finds that in Costner. What might have been interesting is seeing whether the mother and the escaped con could actually have worked together as a family unit. I doubt she could have done much better than this guy.

    2 out of 5 stars Dismal movie.......2006-08-29

I'm surprised that others have reviewed this movie with high rankings. It's basically a mediocre movie, with not much of a story, nothing much that is enjoyable or uplifting, and some questionable content.

For most of the movie, Kevin Costner's character is chain-smoking cigarettes, cussing, and generally being a bad influence in front of the young boy he takes hostage, as they travel across Texas evading the law and breaking the law together. There's nothing of value that comes out of this movie. I'm glad I only paid a small amount to rent it, and not blow more money and time in the theatre.

4 out of 5 stars Good acting, interesting plot, real sense of 1960's Texas.......2006-08-11

I could never understand all the excitement regarding Kevin Costner in his heyday but he is absolutely great in this movie. He manages to make an escaped convict both realistic and sympathetic. The child actor playing Phillip/Buzz is also wonderful. Clint Eastwood is Clint Eastwood and though I have never been a Laura Dern fan she does well in her role as a criminologist. The script is not perfect and the movie is over long but still compelling and very watchable. The movie is set on Halloween and the couple of days following in 1963 Texas. JFK's upcoming Dallas trip plays a small part in the film and helps anchor the setting firmly in the viewer's mind.

    Product Description

Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, one of the last old-fashioned heroes in the West, is a protective friend but a relentless foe who will stop at nothing to bring a criminal to justice.

An unofficial Chuck Norris fact: With apologies to Al Gore, global warming does not cause hurricanes. They are caused by the wind generated by Chuck Norris' flurry of roundhouse kicks to the head. Which is why this seven-disc set will blow you away. After Norris's movie career stalled, Walker: Texas Ranger revived his career and catapulted him to international icon status of Hasselhoff proportions. He has since been transformed into an affectionate punchline for the likes of Conan O'Brien and the purveyors of the Official Chuck Norris facts website ("Those aren't credits that roll after Walker: Texas Ranger. It is actually a list of fatalities that occurred during the making of the episode."). Co-created by future Oscar-winner Paul Haggis (Crash), Walker: Texas Ranger is a tailor-made vehicle for Norris, whose eponymous character dispenses somewhat suspect justice. "You screwed up," one particularly nasty miscreant tells Walker. "You forgot to read us our rights. Walker obliges, but not before kicking him into submission, "You have the right to remain silent." Walker's methods may perturb Asst. D.A. Alex Cahill (Sheree J. Wilson), but they sure come in handy when she is menaced, Cape Fear-style, by the recently freed corrupt sheriff she sent to jail ("Borderline") or kidnapped by a cult leader ("In the Name of God").

There are three crucial elements for a great Walker episode: A particularly vile villain (drug dealers, rapists, baby-stealing politicians), coolly delivered Chuck-isms ("When I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you," reprised from the great Code of Silence), and, to quote Jimmy Trivette (Clarence Gilyard), Walker's new, more by-the-book partner, the "squinty-eyed make-my-day stuff" that Walker punishingly dispenses near the 40-minute mark of nearly every episode. When you've got Chuck Norris, you don't need A-list guest stars, but Walker's first season does feature some familiar faces, including the future Spider-Man Tobey Maguire ("The Prodigal Son"), Stuart Whitman ("The Reunion"), and a post-Wonder Years Danica "Winnie" McKellar ("Stolen Lullaby"). Norris may not be Oscar or Emmy material, but watching Walker unfailingly lay out the bad guys and making the guilty pay is the essence of comfort television. As Trivette says, "I hate to admit; the man is good." In short: don't mess with Texas! --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Deep it's not, but if you like action..........2007-08-27

We could go on all day about if the show is really necessary, but after watching two episodes in particular (found in this set), "Borderline" and "Deadly Reunion," I decided to see just "What Would Walker do?" "Borderline" is a deadly cat and mouse plot, featuring Sheree Wilson (as Asst. D.A. Cahill) and the great character actor Leon Rippy (as former sheriff Dewey Baker). Wilson is as sexy as is possible in prime-time TV in this episode, with Rippy (bad teeth and all) as repulsive and slimy as is possible. Of course, Chuck Norris (as Ranger Walker) kicks the creep back to the stone age by episode's end -- but the fun is getting to the conclusion. "Deadly Reunion" brings together western film icons R.G. Armstrong, L.Q. Jones, and Stuart Whitman, in arguably the best episode of the set. Norris will never be compared to Richard Burton, but "Walker" is a good way to put your brain on auto pilot for 60-minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Such a fine line between atrocious and priceless..........2007-07-13

This is THE classic "it's so bad it's good" TV show. While it frightens me somewhat that a lot of the glowing reviews on here are not the least bit tongue in cheek (silent red state majority, THERE you are!), watching a Walker episode has to be one of the most entertaining ways for a modern creature to spend 50 minutes of their time. The producers couldn't have made this show any more awful had their lives depended on it and therein lies the glory! Bad acting, ridiculous story lines, good and evil clearly separated into one dimensional oversimplifications, this is definitely not a program for any thinking person who (tragically) lacks a sense of the crippling irony inherent in life that is simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. That you have simple, sadsack souls out there in bumble#$%* America honestly getting off on the cornball morality lessons and good old "eye for an eye" vigilante stuff that this show spews out by the ton while at the same time others of us are laughing until we can't breathe at the unfathomable inanity and mindboggling fact that this show was actually produced for 8 years to me sums up the staggering beauty of being alive.

Ah, unintentional humor is often exponentially funnier than the best joke. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Exhibit A: Walker, Texas Ranger!

P.S. And to you serious fans out there in Arkadelphia who don't watch this for yucks wondering why it took so long to come out on DVD, you can probably thank Conan O'Brien and those of like mind for the new hipness of this sacred monstrosity.

5 out of 5 stars At Last I can watch Walker (Chuck Norris).......2007-06-27

Witty. Excellent. Can't stop watching.Superb fight scenes. Good acting. Informative. Excellent locations. Excellent family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Before the Ranger got his eyes.......2007-04-22

The only part of this set that isn't good is that the theme song that we all came to know and love for this show wasn't part of it yet. Other than that, this show is what kept my family watching for the full run.
As Walker, Norris found the roll he was born to play. With the belief that Justice should be served no matter what, Walker fought the good fight every week to keep the streets clean. Thank you Mr. Norris and company for giving us this great show.

    5 out of 5 stars I love Walker!.......2007-04-10

I love all the episodes of Walker. It is fun to watch. I think part of what made Walker so good was that Chuck Norris and the writers, directors, etc., really understood what many Americans wanted to see. We want to see the good guys win! I watch these episodes over and over. I miss the series. Maybe they will consider doing a movie down the road to "let us see what happened to everybody." This would be great!

Chuck Norris fans will find Lone Wolf McQuade to be one of his best. Playing a rebellious Texas Ranger, Norris single-handedly wipes out an entire gang of horse thieves--and that's just the opening scene. From there the plot involves arms smuggling, McQuade's daughter being kidnapped, and a dwarf in an electric wheelchair. But the movie's real trump card is a face-off between Norris and David Carradine of the TV show Kung Fu, who plays a badass villain with a penchant for argyle sweaters (though truth be told, Norris's wardrobe is very 1980s as well). Barbara Carrera makes a suitable bad girl/love interest and science fiction fans will enjoy some familiar faces (Robert Beltran, who would later be part of Star Trek: Voyager, and William Sanderson, a supporting actor from Blade Runner). All in all, an action-packed romp with a reverent, almost mythological view of the Texas Rangers. --Bret Fetzer

I've been a Chuck Norris fan since I saw this movie a number of times when it came out in theaters years ago. As I watched it again after purchasing the DVD recently, I was extremely disappointed with the plot, script, and direction. However, Chuck Norris, as the lone wolf Texas Ranger, turned a zero-star movie into a two-star movie that wasn't a complete waste of time ... but it's not a movie I would watch again.

A must-have for Chuck Norris fans. Masterful martial arts action, and the added bonus of seeing Kung Fu star David Carradine, too! Norris always shines as a Texas Ranger.

    5 out of 5 stars LONEWOLF MCQUADE.......2006-11-07

An excellent movie. Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger is at his best. Its an oldy but a goody made in 1983.
Its a story of love set in an western action adventure genre. When the bad guy (David Carradine) kidnaps his daughter Chuck Norris rises to the challenge and over comes all odds in this excelent martial arts adventure. Coupled with sexy love scenes with Barbara Carrera, this movie is a must see. I give it two thumbs up.
