How can you go wrong with a movie featuring the great Harry Carey as a philosophical lawman named Wistful McClintock? Well sir (or ma'am), you can't, and this first production from John Wayne's personal unit at Republic is simply one of the loveliest Westerns anybody ever made. The producer-star plays gunslinger Quirt Evans who, wounded by his archrival Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot), is taken in and sheltered by a Quaker family--in particular, by the daughter of the household, a dark-eyed angel (Gail Russell) who could entice Satan himself to the path of virtue. Not that these good people get pushy about converting "Brother Evans." For his part, Marshal McClintock, who's amiably looked forward to hanging Quirt someday, keeps dropping by to see which happens first--Quirt's reformation, or Laredo's return to finish the job he started.
Entrusting the direction to screenwriter James Edward Grant, Wayne bolstered Grant's debut by tapping Yakima Canutt to handle the hard-riding second-unit stuff. The Duke also stole a few moves from a little project he'd been working on with Howard Hawks, Red River. Such larceny may have been superfluous. Grant wrote far and away the best script Wayne had ever had at Republic, creating a gallery of memorable characters (including comparative bystanders) and developing some very entertaining business for them--especially for such juicy character actors as Paul Hurst (the Quakers' mean-spirited neighbor), Olin Howlin (a braggadocious telegraph operator), and Hank Worden. The result was a minor classic deftly blending humor, romance, authentic sweetness, and just enough leathery menace to keep things on the generic up-and-up. This one's a real treat. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
rustle from the rustlers, then marry thy quaker woman.......2007-08-29
I have this film on another DVD, so I won't comment on that. Enough reviewers have said this a good copy. The story and filming technique definitely put this film in the "B" western categoty. Seems Quirt Evans(Wayne)is a bad hombre, decending from a one time role as Wyatt Earp's deputy. Everybody is instantly wary when they hear his name, except for his adoptive Quaker family. Clearly, Quirt has had a colorful past, but we are never let in on the details. The story begins with Quirt on foot shooting at we don't know who in our direction, then being chased on horse by a large gang. We never get an explanation. Later, Laredo Stevens
and hands come calling on Quirt with guns drawn, then hand over a bag of gold in exchange for his signature on a deed for some land. We are never given an explanation of what this was all about. Some weeks later, Quirt bolts form a Quaker meeting and his apparent girlfriend, joins two friends and waits for Laredo's gang to take over a cattle herd being driven. They then club or shoot this gang and take over the herd themselves! Next thing we know, they are celebrating in a saloon with some familiar women. Quirt starts a fight that turns into a general melee that wrecks most of the break-away saloon furnishings and banisters, before retiring to a brothel with his friends. He suddenly bolts out the door and on to his Quaker girlfriend's house! This is the man that Gail Russell's character has been making goo-goo eyes at ever since she picked him off the ground, unconscious. In the climactic scene, we have an apparent "high noon" stand off developing, Quirt believing Gail is dying as a result of injuries after the pair were chased by Laredo's hands. But, Gail miraculously appears just before the anticipated shootout. See the movie to find out how it ends.
There are much better developed, more complicated, stories among Wayne's '40s westerns, but few of them were made by Republic, as was this one. The main attractions here are Wayne's conflicitng reactions to his adoptive Quaker family, Gail Russell's endearing shy but persistent pursuit of what she instantly decides is her man, right or wrong, and her frequent long Loretta Young-like gazes designed to win him. Harey Carey has a most unusual role as the sheriff who keeps popping up threatening to find a valid reason to hang Quirt, yet really hoping that he will settle down with his new Quaker friends. He also has an important role in the finale.

I have always liked this film and this GoodTimes version tranfer is the best I have seen so far. When an older film is being put together for DVD tranfer a minty original negative must be used from the beginning and then the sound and film quality can be improved further using current digital technology.
Everyone knows the story of this film but what I look for is quality reproduction of these older films for viewing enjoyment.
I finally found the DVD that has caption (English subtitle).......2006-07-17
I can't believe that there are many different studios producing DVDs for the same movie (B&W or color, I saw both - color from Turner cable on TV few years ago). This one (D3K) is the only one that I can find that has English subtitle. The only problem I have with this one is that subtitle will work if I start the movie from the beginning. Subtitle will not work if I returned to specific scene. I will have to fast forward from the beginning after activating the subtitle. To avoid that, I will have to make sure I have a free couple hours to watch the whole movie at one sitting. That's the only reason I deduct 1 star. I guess it's better than nothing. Otherwise, the movie itself is great and enjoyable to watch featuring John Wayne and Gail Russell. And the movie is black & white.

Saddle stories.......2007-06-20
TOUGH GUYS OF THE WEST features all the big cowboy stars of the 1930s and 40s, plus many other well-known actors. These mostly hour-length oaters were often screened back then as half of a Saturday afternoon matinee. If you've never seen in action Hoot Gibson, Ken Maynard, Buck Jones or Bob Steele (other than in his F-Troop! role of Trooper Duffy), this fine DVD box set will afford you just that opportunity. With ten double-sided discs containing twenty still well-loved westerns, TOUGH GUYS is a great way to start your "classic westerns" library off on the right hoof.
And if you really want an instant collection of films like these, why not try WESTERN CLASSICS 100 MOVIE PACK? It's about the best darn thing to come along since the silver bullet!

20 Westerns of Public Domain Goodness for a Reasonable Price.......2007-05-30
Tough Guys of the West is a collection of 20 Westerns that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $23.99 for my set and that comes down to less than $1.25 per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.
This deal is even better when you consider that many of the movies in this collection are available as individual movie DVD's at prices of $5 and higher. Many of the movies in this collection are presented in better condition than they are from other DVD companies.
Additionally, some of these movies are of such quality and/or proven audience appeal you just have to wonder just why the movie studios did not renew their copyrights. Chief among these are Santa Fe Trail starring both Errol Flynn & Ronald Reagan, Angel and the Badman starring John Wayne and Abilene Town starring Randolph Scott.
All in all, a great deal for the money.
ALLRIGHT.......2007-02-20
I had a problem that some of the discs were duplicated, but every thing was sorted out by Amazon who gave me a full credit
bcieclipse goes western again.......2006-05-07
this set of 20 movies is a western lovers dream. the transfers are all good for the most part and my stepfather really likes this set also. a great way to build your collection of western movies.
For old B-Westerns, the film transfers here are mostly pretty good considering...........2005-08-12
This is a review of the "Tough Guys of the West" 20 movie DVD collection issed by Brentwood Home Video.
What you have here is a very good collection of 20 B-Westerns. The films transfers range from very good or excellent to very poor. But, overall these are all watchable and are generally in fairly decent quality overall considering the age and nature of public domain films.
The film transfers for most are at least adequate and generally as good as or better than the typical low-end type of public domain product available out there. But, as I noted there are exceptions, however, and some films are in much better shape than others, but there are only maybe three or four films that I would call very poor transfers (still watchable, but in poor quality), most of the rest of the films here are such that you can generally enjoy the movie itself without being overly distracted by the scratches, fuzziness, splices, etc.
Some of the films that rank in the lower end of the quality range here include: Aces and Eights, Arizona Gunfighter, Gangster's Den, and Frontier Fury. These four films are pretty fuzzy looking - you can watch them o.k., but if you happen to really, really like any of those and were considering buying this collection just for those four films, you should look elsewhere for better copies.
On the other hand, "Abilene Town" is in much, much better quality here than I have seen in some other collections and "Hittin' the Trail", "Stampede" and "The Painted Desert" are also in very good condition here - these are all very good to excellent in terms of picture quality most of the time. Probably as good as it gets for these great old films.
The Roy Rogers film, "Nevada City" is a sharp picture, but it is washed out looking - you can compensate somewhat by increasing the contrast and still get a decent result.
In addition, please note that the Roan Group has issued a much, much better quality DVD version of the Roy Rogers film "Billy the Kid Returns" than what you find here in this collection. Also, if you are looking for a near perfect quality DVD of "Angel and the Bad Man" you need to get the one issued by Good Times which is much better than the film transfer of that film included in this collection. In both cases those two films are certainly very watchable in this collection, I'm just letting you know that if you want perfect copies of those two films and are willing to pay the extra money to get them, significantly better film transfers can be found elsewhere. The ones on this collection are certainly watchable and enjoyable, just not perfect.
Here is a list of the movies included in this set:
Abilene Town - Randolph Scott
Aces and Eights - Tim McCoy
Angel and the Badman - John Wayne
The Arizona Gunfighter - Bob Steele
Cavalcade of the West - Hoot Gibson
Dawn on the Great Divide - Buck Jones

Jameson
Description
Angel And The Badman In this classic Western tale, John Wayne portrays Quirt Evans, a wounded gunslinger befriended and nursed back to health by a peace-loving Quaker family. Although attracted to the kind-hearted Prudence (Gail Russell), the outlaw nevertheless goes gunning after his archenemy (Bruce Cabot). Can Prudence convince Quirt to change his evil ways? One of Wayne's better Westerns, it was the first movie he produced himself and it was critically praised for its theme of redemption and the `badman who turns to good.' This 1947 movie also stars Harry Carey as the sheriff keeping a close eye on Quirt. A cinematic treasure! Plus! The original theatrical trailer! Approx. 2 min. Approx. 100 min.
Bonus Material: The Stars of Angel And The Badman

A movie lovers feast! Approx.15 minutes
A Good Version of Angel & THe Badman.......2007-02-20
I have always liked this film and this GoodTimes version tranfer is the best I have seen so far.

Classic western film from the master actor........2000-06-14
This is a classic film from the master actor. This can't be compared to the technical aspect of western films in this era, of course. It's an excitement to see a great film from the great actor like John Wayne.
