as i have said before i love westerns and i love spaghetti westerns also. the five movies here are among some of the best.the extras for this set are very good and there are plenty of them.

Good Collection of Italian Westerns.......2005-06-25

According to British author Christopher Frayling in his biography of director Sergio Leone, in the wake of the international success of "A Fistful of Dollars" the Italian film industry spawned dozens of "spaghetti" westerns. I don't know if the collection represented here are the best of the bunch but they are a decent cross-section of the genre. Though none of these film's approach the masterworks of Leone they, for the most part, distinguish themselves stylistically from Leone's work. What is also interesting is that Franco Nero is the star of three of these entries but shows range by assaying different character types in each of them.
"A Bullet for the General"-Tale of Mexican banditos led by Gian Maria Volonte in a robust performance. Events and the arrival of a mysterious American cause Volonte to question his mercenary mindset. Film has an interesting political bent. Four stars.
"Companeros"-Lighthearted story of Swedish gunrunner(Nero) and Mexican mercenary(Tomas Milian) who form an uneasy alliance to free socialist professor(Fernando Rey) from American prison and bring back to Mexico so he can reveal the combination of an impregnable safe containing a fortune. Film also has a socialist bent but it's not too heavy-handed. Jack Palance has a creepy turn as an American bounty hunter. Four stars.
"Four of the Apocalypse"-This is probably the most enigmatic of the bunch. Film concerns a circumstantial alliance between a card shark, a pregnant prostitute, a drunk, and a man who claims to commune with the dead set in Utah. Though the film contains some poignant scenes there are also scenes of gratuitous violence that to me nullify the film's attributes. Judge for yourself. Three stars.
"Keoma"-Moody film about a half-breed gunslinger (Nero) returning from the Civil War to find his town overrun by the plague and controlled by a despot. Excellent character study and example of Nero's range as an actor. Four stars.
"Texas, Adios"-Probably the film most reminiscent stylistically to Leone but the most conventional. Story concerns Texas lawman (Nero) travelling to Mexico with his brother to apprehend the man who killed his father. Nero is solid but the story is kind of routine. Three stars.

terrific quality.......2005-03-25

If you've been exploring the world of spaghetti westerns at all, you've no doubt come across some pretty poor transfers. Stuff obviously made from worn out, scratched up and dirty film. You often have to be philosophical about it -- if you want to see some of these old movies, it's a matter of putting up with the ragged quality or do without. This set from Anchor Bay, on the other hand, is really something. They have done a fantastic job of restoring and transferring. The extra features are really nice as well -- interviews with Tomas Milian and Franco Nero. None of these movies is going to replace The Good the Bad & the Ugly as my all time favorite movie, but I really enjoyed getting to see them. I highly recommend this set.

Regarding the gentleman that got rip off royal.Amazon..should check into that seller and do something about that.To protect us.But..if he gets this message..I want you to know..I purchase same movie..extras..brand new off of ebay a year ago for about $35.00.Release by what you say too...wildeast entertainment.But my was perfect.When this movie came out..I was able at that time when LP'S were still hot...I purchase the soundtrack.Like new.I have only played it once.Would like to find it on cd..but the art work on the album is pure magic.Not like today..with stamp size covers on cd's.Great movie...a rare VAN CLEEF WESTERN.Good luck!

Good dvd, for every spagetti western lovers, need to get this movie.

Captain Apache was more enjoyable...........2007-05-21

Being a huge LVC fan, I was excited to come across this title. Great artwork - too bad the movie doesn't live up to the exciting poster art. The only thing this flick has going for it besides LVC and the poster art is the outstanding score by Riz Ortalini. One of the most awesome non-Morricone spaghetti western scores ever.

I would rate this one even with Beyond the Law, another lesser LVC effort that also has TV quality sets and acting. Even the action was minimal. The storyline was similar to but not done nearly as well as Death Rides A Horse.

For the best of LVC, I would recommend (in order)The Big Gundown, Death Rides a Horse, The Grand Duel, El Condor and even Captain Apache before I would recommend Day of Anger. Way overrated and WAAAAAAY overpriced. WildEast should be ashamed of themselves trying to get thirty dollars for this disc.

Save your bucks on this DVD and just get the soundtrack CD of the score while it is still in print. Believe me, you'll get way more miles outta the CD than you will this DVD...

I Own All Wildeast DVD's And Never Had Any Problems!.......2007-04-26

When I first heard about this "Spaghetti" I was mildly intrigued. Then I found out the DVD was "rare" and I was curious. Then I saw the pricetag and said "fahgetaboutit!" And then I broke down and bought it. Not only does it live up to the hype, it was totally worth the price of admission!

A warning about Wild East Entertainment.......2006-09-17

I am a Spaghetti Western fan. Because of this I decided to purchase a number of rather rare films on DVD by Wild East Entertainment. One of thes films is the classic Lee Van Cleef western Day of Anger.

The first DVD I recieved of Day of Anger had some major problems. I ordered the disc BRAND NEW from amazon directly and the disc contained many DEEP scratches, fingerprint smudges, and the center of the disc was even cracked. I sent the disc back to get a replacement. The second disc I recieved was also scratched badly. I'm not sure who is in charge of making these Wild Eest Entertainment discs but holy hell, give me a break! For brand new discs they look and play like a an ex-rental that had been used as a frisbee. I sent the disc back for a second time because the film skipped. The third disc I recieved...what a surprise...was also really scratched. Enough is enough! How many times do I have to send a disc back in order to get a disc that is in LIKE NEW condition and plays fine!

This is not the only problem i had with Wild East DVDs I ordered. I also ordered the DVDs Santara and Gentleman Killer. I will say up front that I have a normal television (not some fancy widescreen TV) and a normal high quality Sony DVD player. When I played either one of those DVDs...the image come up scruntched on my TV. It's not like I have a widescreen TV playing non-anamorphic discs. I have a normal everyday TV. I emailed Wild East Entertainment about the problem and they eventually responded that it was a manufacturing defect on their part and the person has to switch their DVD player manually to 16x9 to play properly on their TV. Sadly I was unable to do this on my DVD player and the company offered my money back if I sent back the discs along with my amazon receipt. I sent the DVD to them. It's been months and I have not recieved any refund and they refuse to email me back. They took my DVDs and never sent me a refund and refuse to answer my letters and emails. I have NEVER been treated so poorly and they basically robbed me of $40.

The "Taste of Killing" DVD also has some video glitches but I assume I warned potential buyers enough about "Wild East Entertainment". I respect the work they are trying to do by releasing hard to find Spaghetti Westerns but they need to shape up or ship out. Releasing defective discs that are poorly manufactured (like the Day of Anger disc) is upsetting. Their customer service promising refunds that never arrive and ignoring emails and letters is childish. It's a shame because I bought a LOT of their DVD's but the defective discs and their customer service giving false promises ensures that I will NEVER buy another one of their products again.

One outta two isn't bad...........2007-05-12

The Grand Duel(aka Il Grande Duello) is a must have for Van Cleef fans - a great solid spaghetti western with much of the LVC style. Luis Bacalov has also really provided one of the most memorable non-Morricone spaghetti scores to date. Great production values and an engaging story make it more than worthwhile.

Beyond the Law is a lesser effort and comes off looking more like a TV quality production with TV quality acting overall and has none of the style and great lines that makes a Van Cleef outing so much fun.

The widescreen transfer on both films is very acceptable for a spaghetti western and will not disappoint. You will definately want to pick up this double feature for The Grand Duel alone and I very highly recommend getting your hands on the CD soundtrack which has seen a couple of printings over the years.

For those looking for more great Van Cleef spaghetti, I recommend Death Rides a Horse, The Big Gundown, Captain Apache, Grand Duel and El Condor - all much better than the waaay overrated Day of Anger...

just recently purchased this dvd by WILD EAST PRODUCTIONS,and i
have got to say,they did a fantastic job on restoration and
sound of this movie,plus the extras thrown in.And an interview
with anthony steffen,the star of GENTLEMAN KILLER.No it's not
SERGIO LEONE or SERGIO CORBUCCI.But GIORGIO STEGANI Did a
superb job of this.the story is good,the action is good as well
with a couple of fine fimiliar faces of 1 or 2 character actors.
This "SW" is a must see.I'm not going to ruin it by telling
you what happens.Just check it out for your self if you love
the ITALIAN WESTERNS LIKE I DO.ALSO,ENNIO MORRICONE AND BRUNO
NICOLAI DOES THE SCORE AS WELL.GREAT SCORE FOR THIS MOVIE.

Despite the Fistful of Dynamite looking cover art, Leone this is not. It's nothing more than a mediocre spaghetti at best and is really weakened by the dubbing of American actors who were already speaking english. I mean really, who dubs over the legendary voice of the Late, Great Mr. James Coburn!?!?!

note: The fort in this flick is the same fort built for El Condor with Lee Van Cleef and Jim Brown - which is a much, much better film.

MAN,THIS SATISFIES!.......2006-11-18

Sometimes only a spaghetti western can satisfy my cravings for some trash cinema,and I feel that this one does in spades! More-or-less a riff on the Dirty Dozen, set in the Civil War era.I won't bore you with a lengthy plot synopsis - the film slows down a bit in certain stretches (like most Spaghetti's),but the final act is something to see! Crazy rip-off of Peckinpah's "Wild Bunch" minus the slow-mo bits,machine guns and bodies everywhere! Ha,Ha!!

Yes,I rated this film 4-stars.Why,Because of wild east productions.They
are doing a wonderful job on these almost lost Italian Westerns.But don't
take my word for it.Check them out yourself.Or go on line at WWW.WIDEAST.
NET.First off,there are no good guys in this movie,there all bad,except
for the bind man,the father of the dead confederate soldier,that CHIP
CORMAN,The main actor,come's across at the river bed,who is also known as
EL DESPORADO in the movie.The story is set around the civil war,with
gold and greed as the motive.Sound fimiliar????Any way,the only thing i
find amu"z"ing in this move,is that when people get shot,there is no
blood marks or bullet holes to show for it,kind of get shot,look dramatic
and die and fall in any mud hole in the street,plus the blind man get's
killed in a sadistic kind of way,you will recognize him as one of the
great characters of many italian westerns.All in all a get above B
average,or in my opinion between A&B,maybe a B+. It is worth have in my
collection,Or any body's collection if you love these movie's as i do.
GREAT OPENING THEME with vocals,which flow's with the movie.WILD EAST
PRODUCTIONS in my opinion rank's right up there with ANCHOR BAY AND
BLUE UNDERGROUND,With extras,and restoring this movie,so clear and crisp
the dubbing is superb since the movie was dubbed in english for USA
Release back in the sixties.There voices are all in sink.The film score
was restored as well.CHECK IT OUT,YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED.
