Can a wild horse with a bad attitude and a not-quite-wild but pretty darn sullen teenage girl with a bad attitude be the best things that ever happened to each other? Though we guess the answer pretty early on in Flicka, it doesn't diminish the feel-good family film one bit. The film is a remake of the 1947 My Friend Flicka itself based on the bestselling (and still riveting) novel by Mary O'Hara, and starring a young Roddy McDowall as the aimless teen hero. This 2006 update changes the hero to a heroine, Katy (Alison Lohman), though the dynamic is similar, and in some ways makes the appeal of the film broader. After all, young girls love their horses, and Katy's moxie and determination, as she opens her heart to the wild filly, a touchingly and humanly conveyed. As Katy struggles with her relationship with her gruff dad (given an excellent performance by country star Tim McGraw), she finds she can gain confidence and be the person her father wants her to be--solely by being herself as she connects with Flicka the horse. The cinematography is stunning, and showcases a part of America that once was seen and celebrated often in films, and lately so rare as to be precious. --A.T. Hurley

I ordered this for my granddaughter and watched it with her and I can attest that it is good clean entertainment for the family. She and I enjoyed it very much.
Bankable.......2007-08-11
"Flicka" (2006) bridges several sub-genres, unfortunately it is one of the weakest examples of each. It's a horse movie (the original is better, as are "National Velvet", The Horse Whisperer" and for that matter most episodes of the Saddle Club and "Spin & Marty"). It's a 'wild mustangs as a metaphor for the changing West" movie ("The Misfits" and "Billy Jack" do it better). It's an overwrought coming of age melodrama (countless other films do this better as well as most of the stuff you find playing on Lifetime).
It's also an Alison Lohman film and in all fairness contains one of her best performances. Lohman is always excellent and in "Flicka" she is given a lot to work with and handles it all quite well but the scripting and editing are so weak that her strong performance (and nice supporting work by Maria Bello and Ryan Kwanten) cannot turn this thing into a quality film. You might notice that neither the two screenwriters nor the director have been involved in any feature productions since the release of the film.
"Flicka" was a major release (over 2900 theaters in the U.S.) and turned a profit at the box office. I credit shrewd packaging by the film's producers as they focused from inception on insuring that the project would be bankable. They incorporated elements that pre-sold the film beyond its target audience of pre-teen girls. Tim McGraw was cast to bring in his large fan base, Kwanten was counted on to draw a fair number of teenage girls into the multi- plex, and there are so few live action family films in 2006 that it tapped into this under-supplied market.
Although Mary O'Hara's beloved children's book (My Friend Flicka-previously adapted into two feature films and a television show, is credited) it would be more accurate to say "inspired by" rather than "adapted from". The original's ten-year-old hero has been changed to a 16-year-old heroine named Katy McLaughlin (Lohman).
I normally rant a bit when an older actress is cast as a teenager but Lohman is the Mary Pickford of her day and with her cute face and freckles still looks physically believable playing a teen. Her new look for the film, long curly hair-dyed dark, makes her look a lot like Kari Russell (insert "very Irish" here). In this remake it's totally Katy's story (in the original the parents had a more central role) and is told from her point-of-view. She even does a short voice-over commentary to begin and close the film. Normally this POV stuff leads to viewer identification and connection, but the scripting and directing works against Lohman and you stay distanced from her character.
Katy is mega-headstrong, uncomfortable and bored at her boarding school but at one with the wilds of her family's horse ranch in Wyoming. Her father is grooming Katy's older brother Howard to eventually take over the ranch, clueless about Howard's desire to escape and about Katy's affinity for the place. She is the chip-off-the-old-block, not her brother.
The title character is a two-year old black mustang mare that is a source of conflict between Katy and her father for most of the film. While the movie looks pretty the thin plot, the poor sequencing, and absence of "genuine" emotion" doesn't add up to a particularly satisfying viewing experience.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
flicka.......2007-08-09
Hi well to start I was excited about watching this movie cause it looked a lot like dreamer which I enjoyed. BUT IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! Katie is selfish and has a bad attitude which never gets better throughout the movie. The characters are allways yelling at each other. And Katie is also dumb and tries things whith Flicka that get her hurt and in trouble. I hated this and so did my Mom but my Dad strangely liked it. Anyways this is one of those love it or hate it movies. And I personally hated it. Well gotta go hope this was helpful Brooke.
Horse mad kids will love this one........2007-07-25
I couldn't stand this movie, but my horse mad daughters loved it. As an adult I couldn't sit through five minutes but the girls watch it over and over again. My daughter rates this film as "I just love it, mum" and she goes and watches it AGAIN!! So I give it 4/5 on her rating. Not for adults but its a great one for kids.
Annoying characters.......2007-07-17
This movie should carry a warning about all the whining and arguing contained in it. Why on earth a smart horse like Flicka didn't have enough sense to run for the hills, away from this dysfunctional family is beyond me. I for one have had it up to here with smartalecknowitallkidteachesdumbparent movies. At least in the original movie, Roddy McDowall was respectful to his father. The character of Katie in this movie is just obnoxious. The whole family could benefit from some counselling. The scenery and horses are beautiful however.

In the mountainous high country above the Australian bush, wild horses run free: Australians call them wild "brumbies." Author Elyne Mitchell's book, The Silver Brumby, on which this movie is based, is about a magnificent silver stallion, Thowra. The story opens on a dark and stormy night in the high country. Elyne (Caroline Goodall), spins a tale to comfort her daughter, Indi (Ami Daemion). The beautiful mare, Bell-Bell, gives birth to Thowra, an exceptional cream-colored foal, with a mane and tail that gleam silver in the moonlight. We see Thowra grow up through several seasons. Winter has its hardships; the herds of horses find survival difficult in the snow-packed mountains. But summer may be even more dangerous, for that's when men return to the high country to try to catch the brumbies and cruelly break them of their wildness. For one man (called simply "The Man" in Elyne's story), capturing Thowra, now king of all the brumbies, becomes an obsession. The Man is played by Russell Crowe, whose usual fine acting is enhanced here by impressive horsemanship. The struggle between Thowra and The Man takes on mythic proportions, building to a haunting climax. Gorgeous footage of wild horses running and rearing in the mountains make this the perfect movie for horse-lovers of all ages. We come to care deeply about the fate of these splendid creatures, whose wisdom and passion are rivaled only by their beauty. --Laura Mirsky

~Thowra the greatest horse of them all~.......2007-05-10
Where can i start with The Silver Brumby. This movie was such a big part of my life growing up. Its an amazing story about horses. I HIGHLY suggest getting this movie for any horse lover. Its just breathe taking. The horse are so beautiful on the movie.
My favorite movie as a youth and still my favorite movie.......2007-03-11
Russell Crowe and Caroline Goodall shine in this spirited film about the wild horses of outback. A great film for famlies, indi film fans or horse crazy folk!
Great Horse Movie!.......2007-01-19
One of the best horse movies I've seen, along in the category with classics like Black Beauty, The Horse Whisperer, and the Black Stallion. As a child, I rented this movie, and I loved it, and when I was older, I felt the need to watch it again. After frequent searches, we finally ended up buying it on Amazon, and I was able to relive the wonderful movie I'd watched when I was younger. Stunning scenery, beautiful music, well chosen actors, and, of course, horses were very beautiful. It is a family classic must-see-movie.
Silver Stallion.......2007-01-18
I love Russell Crowe which helps. Very 'Man from Snowy River' Australian story which has all the drama and action that kept my 7 year old riveted to the movie. Definitely a favourite of hers as the story is told from mother to daughter in language that she understands....there is little dialogue but the photography is outstanding and supports the story beautifully.
Great for little kids.......2006-11-30
I bought this for my 2 yr old who is crazy about horses. This is a great movie for little kids. It is beautiful, the landscape and the horses are just amazing. That is the part my daughter likes. As for the story, it is lacking. I guess if you are a Russel Crow fan you might like this more than I do. He is rugged, handsome and young in this movie.(That is the first time I have said he is handsome)I on the other hand laugh at acouple of scenes("I've got your daughter Stallion!")if you have seen this movie you know what I'm talking about.

Customer Reviews:
The most loved Elmo video in our house!.......2007-07-31
My son is 2 years old. We own several Elmo videos, but this one is his favorite. "Fiesta" comes in a close second, but this one is his most beloved. It is long, 50 minutes, but when it starts, he climbs on top of his rocking horse and rides along with Elmo. He has started saying things like "yee-haw". Watching him rock on his horse while watching this is adorable! Live action horses/ ponies is an added plus. My son also loves Mr. Noodle, his brother Mr. Noodle & Miss Noodle...this video has all 3 together. My husband and I could not remember ever seeing them all together, so that was cool. I recommend this highly...it is a huge hit in our house!
Just bought this..........2007-03-25
I just got this dvd for my son, and he loves it! Can't go wrong with Elmo's World!
A real cute video.......2007-03-09
My two year old son loves this movie. He has about ten other Elmo videos. This one is really cute and it doesn't drive me crazy when he watches it over and over. My favorite part is when the Noodle gang does a line dance.
Loves the horses.......2007-01-15
My grandson loves watching films with animals as well as Elmo. This one is his absolute favorite. When he wants to watch the horses, we will watch this movie over and over. This is a good picture for the little ones.
Wild, Wild, West is a hit!.......2006-08-29
My daughter received this for her second birthday and she loves it. Once again Elmo fans are delighted with the wonderfully animated puppets and great guest stars. The music is wonderful and the costumes are adorable. This is a great movie to add to your Elmo's World library.

Horse lovers young and old will celebrate this utterly enjoyable and marvelous-looking animated film. The titular stallion runs free in the Cimarron (New Mexico) wilderness until a series of men try to master the proud horse, leading to adventures through a U.S. Cavalry fort, Native American settlements, and a railroad camp. Despite a heavy dose of political correctness and realism (the animals don't talk; we only hear Spirit's internal monologue, voiced by Matt Damon), directors Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook give their hero many only-in-a-movie moments, including an action sequence rivaling any of Rambo's escapes. The stirring mix of 2-D and 3-D animation is absolutely stunning and aptly fueled by composer Hans Zimmer's synthesized score. The film earns one demerit for '80s rocker Bryan Adams's abundant songs--a different singer could have brought more to the film. Rated G but there is some rough treatment of horses shown, so nix the sensitive preschoolers. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
My kids love this movie.......2007-09-11
We rent 95% of our kid's movies. This is one of the very few movies I just had to come to Amazon to buy. Both my 3 year old son and 5 year old daughter just can't get enough of it. I got it at first because so many movies out there are "girl" oriented and I wanted something for my son to watch that was a little "rough and tumble" but didn't include violence. This one does have a female horse that Spirit comes to care for, but no gushy love stuff. I also really appreciate that the animals don't talk, though you hear Spirit's thoughts as narrative.
The gist of the movie is that Spirit is a wild stallion captured by Union forces while they are building the first railroad track across the country. Through sheer will he escapes (with some help from a captured Native American man). He then is captured by his Native American tribe who treat him kindly, but Spirit will not let himself be broken. Out of respect for his spirit (pun intended), the Native American man lets him go free. Unfortunately, the Union soldiers attack and, after some (kind of sad) adventure, Spirit is once again captured by the soldiers. The Native American man sets out to free his "friend"...but arrives a little late. Spirit has escaped again, but does need the man's help to survive his escape. In the end, the Native American man brings him home where Spirit finds the mare he thought had died after the attack. Spirit is overjoyed to not only find her safe but that her "two legged" is willing to let her go with him back to the Cimarron herd. (Actually, she could have gone earlier but wouldn't go because her "two legged" needed her.) In the end, Spirit never gives in to letting the "two legged" ride him, but they part with friendship, dignity and respect on both sides.
I have to say, I think I love this movie more than the kids! I fully expected Spirit to let himself be rode as a show of friendship at the end, but he still doesn't. This is my favorite part I suppose, the moral that even if you care deeply for someone it is important never to compromise your principles no matter what they may wish you to do.
Just so you know, there is some shooting when the soldiers attack, but all you see are the Native Americans running, no blood or anything really scary. There are two scenes where the Captain point blank attempts to shoot first Spirit (the gun is knocked away as it shoots by the Native American man) and then the Native American Man (Spirit knocks the gun away as it shoots), but no one is shown hurt by gunfire. These scenes started some interesting conversations with my 5 year old about how Native Americans were treated when "we" took over this land.
Spirit is a Favorite.......2007-08-11
My two granddaughters, aged 3 and 4 love this movie, watching it over and over again. However, they were joined whenever possible by their mom, dad, uncle, and grandparents very often - we all loved it. It has got the girls interested in all things Indian, a topic they had not been familiar with before. An A++ for this well-produced movie!!

Description
After a terrible car accident involving his family, 12-year-old Mark is sent to live with his aunt Fiona (Seymour) on a beautiful and remote island. Isolated from most of the world, Fiona and a park ranger are the only human inhabitants of this wind-swept island, home to herd of wild horses. Her reclusive personality makes Mark's new life on the island difficult but he soon begins to see the beauty of the nature and the animals around them including the horses they are forbidden to touch. When the mother of a young colt is killed, Mark breaks the rules and begins to feed and nurture the young animal. At first Fiona is furious but as she and Mark begin to create their own family bonds, she helps him to keep the horse from starving and each learns lessons from the other about compassion, faith and family ties.

The Heart.......2007-08-04
Jane Seymour, Aunt Fiona a lonely reclusive life on a beatiful Island distrupted by a young 12 year old . lots of family emotions , both aunt and Mark learning to cope with each other and straining the relationship with the treasure hunting park ranger who's self centered on being the only one to stay on the island. the glue a small herd of wild pony horses
that live on the island and by law should not be touched with human hands.
Of course Mark breaks that rule as he is adjusting to seeing nature ,and a young colt thats lost his mother , surival ,from the compassion of a young boy , who through his lost helps the colt to live and helps his aunt fiona to find her family love ,faith , compassion for family.
A very good movie to help all the family to see relationship between people and nature. worth seeing and putting in your library for those cold family monents that need stirring up with love.

Touching Wild Horses is a Horrible Movie.......2007-07-15
Don't waste your money on this movie. The acting is weak as is the plot. Probably a B movie. Not a movie for kids under 12 in my opinion. The boy has nightmares about the death of his sister and father which starts out as no big deal but then the movie shows the sister and father dead in coffin size holes in the ground at night in a graveyard with skulls scattered around. Nasty image. Some adult content too. There are better horse movies to choose from out there.
Touching Wild Horses is Worth Seeing!!.......2007-01-29
It's called "Touching Wild Horses" with Jane Seymour. Kinda like a Hallmark movie, you know, no bad language, no sex, no nudity just a good story and good acting. It's about a boy who goes through a very traumatic event and gets sent to an aunt he doesn't know to live on an island that has wild horses. I'm sure you've seen the same thing before in another movie, but this one is worth seeing!!
good for older kids.......2006-11-22
Good story about helping those who are hurting and helpless. Held my attention to the end. The horses are beautiful. There was one crack at the Catholic church for its stand on morality. My 8 year old was a little disturbed by the nightmare sequences involving the deaths of a character's family members.
Touching Wild Horses.......2005-03-20
I live in Boulder, Colorado and on March 19,2005. I rented the DVD movie of Touching Wild Horses staring Jane Seymour. I enjoyed the movie and all the horses.
But what got me was the way the Aunt started out, rough and un caring but with a little help from a boy and a horse foal named John. The Aunt saw for herself that being caring and opening up does more then acting rough and uncaring. I really also enjoyed the views of Sable Island.

Very sweet family movie!.......2006-07-30
This is a very cute family movie about three kids who hide in their brothers trunk of his car when he leaves for Nevada. The horse crazy kids thought they could catch a wild horse and bring it home after seeing a tape on wild horses in class. It gets a tad more complicated with two bad guys going after a prize winning horse they want to capture and get money for. But it interlocks with the storyline, and makes for a very sweet show! It can catch the eye of all ages. I am thirteen and my sisters are, ten, and four and we all have watched this show for years now, renting it over and over again at the video store. I would recommend it to anyone!
fun and adorable.......2006-05-28
This movie was both fun and adorable at the same time. The child actors gave strong performances and portrayed distinctive and engaging characters. The adult actors provided strong support throughout the entire movie. The scenery was fantastic and there was plenty of light humor throughout this movie. The plot wasn't quite believeable, but it wasn't so far-fetched that it wasn't enjoyable. An eight-year-old boy who dreams of owning his own horse seizes an opportunity to sneak a ride to Nevada with his older brother (who is going to visit his girl friend who he winds up dropping) in order to capture wild mustangs. Two other kids wind up sneaking along. Add a couple of horse theives into the mix and a pretty young lady to attract the interest of the older brother and things get interesting. Who would enjoy watching this movie? One audience is likely to be children under the age of ten. The pacing, humor, and action in the movie would attract this audience. The other main audience that would apprectiate this movie is adults who get a kick out of silly kid movies. This movie does a good job of presenting a captivating story without getting preachy or sappy in any way. There were a couple of moral lessons thrown in along the way, but they fit seemlessly into the plot and don't seem forced in any way. There is also a strong and appealling sub-plot in this movie involving a budding romantic relationship between two people in their early twenties which integrates quite naturally with the main plot.
A real favorite of my 4 year old grandaughter.......2006-03-19
This was a birthday gift for our 4 year old grandaughter who
loves horses. She's already watched it several times since
early March.
Solid Family Entertainment.......2006-01-18
This is a very entertaining movie, and not irritating (like many kids' movies can be) when your kids want to watch it several times in a row. Absolutely beautiful footage of the desert, gorgeous horse, and really cute kids. Three kids stow away in big brother's car, with the plan to capture three wild mustangs in the Nevada desert and "ride them home for supper". Lots of exciting scenes, the kids get to be the heroes, and it isn't too scary for the little ones. Our teenaged neighbors enjoy the movie, just as much as my not-yet-teens do.
I suspect that the "professional movie reviewer" who gave this movie a bad rating wasn't really watching the movie, since she got the entire plot wrong. Definitely worth the money!
An adult's view.......2005-03-30
First the bad: story not totally believable. So-so acting by adults. Dialogue n eeded a rewrite.
Now the good: adorable child actors. Interesting, if not totally believable, story. Excellent photography and beautiful scenery. Fine transfer, though DVD has limited extras.
All in all a pretty good deal, i.e. for the budget the thing probably was shot on. Overall a good effort.

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened.

Stones shine amid the horror.......2005-12-01
Watching this after a screening of WOODSTOCK is a real study in contrast. ALTAMOUNT was always on my radar, growing up, and I had seen this in the theater back in the 70s, but revisiting it now ... what a revelation. There was a perception that WOODSTOCK had been an incredibly significant event in the counter-culture galaxy; a peace+love tribal congress. This concert came four months later, and because it was the west coast rebuttal to the upstate NY megafest, would be even better - better bands, better drugs, hipper hippies, freakier clothes, groovier vibes. The crowd shots are both revealing, and inevitably, terrifying as the claustraphobic crush tightens around the stage (crowd control plans, anyone?) and the HELLS ANGELS react like bears in cages being poked with sticks ... they erupt in an orgy of beatdowns and over-the-top violence. After all, that's what they do. Was anyone truly surprised? The various bands (Airplane, Santana, Dead, Stones) are merely ineffectual witnesses (with a good view) to what goes on, tho Marty Balin does get coldcocked during the Airplane set. I'm sure the musicians to this day feel fortunate that they did not get stomped on stage by the ever-growing legion of wild-eyed, wooly strangers standing nearby. (keep an eye out for the 300 lb. naked man careening through the crowd) If Woodstock gave us a pleasant marijuana buzz, Altamount grinds our collective molars with a bad blend of street meth and bootleg LSD. Man, am I glad I wasn't there.
All this being said, a good portion of this excellent documentary features the Stones backstage, in the recording studio, on the road, and performing with aplomb at a Madison Square Garden show. In '69, after all, they were in midseason form.

Wild Horses.......2005-03-21
The place is New Zealand, the time is the present, and the story is about what happens in a small community when the trees have been cut down and the sawmill closes. Some of the workers, the ones who can shoot, hire on with a venison packing company to hunt and pack the plentiful deer. Others just drift away. The ones with an independent bent strike out on their own. Mitch (Keith Aberdein) is one such free spirit, and he decides to earn a living by capturing and reselling the free roaming wild horses in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park.
Mitch and a couple of his mates prove to be inept, and loud, horse catchers. Essential to the plot but bad for them the ruckus they raise not catching horses spook the deer, making the venison harvest difficult. Plant owner Benson (Michael Haigh), in the best western tradition, hires a black clad professional, Tyson (Bruno Lawrence) to kill the horses so they'll quit interfering with the deer hunt. In the meantime, Mitch enlists the help of two skilled horse capturers - the wise old Sam (Tom Poata) and the pretty young Sara (Robyn Gibbes.)
I liked WILD HORSES a lot. It was nice to see a conflict western in a new and, to me at least, exotic location. The rules are a little different in New Zealand. As one character says, "Horses, deer, rabbits - they've all got to go. None of them are native." In other words, horses can be shot where they stand, with impunity, and left to rot where they fall. In fact, there are some disturbing scenes where it appears horses are actually shot and killed. The movie doesn't condone the killing, and it has dramatic impact, but anyone sensitive to graphic and realistic scenes such as those should be forewarned.
If you can abide the violence WILD HORSES is a deeply rewarding film. I especially liked the way the hired-gun Tyson developed. Early in the movie the veteran wild horse catcher Sam tells Mitch that "We leave a few of the best stallions to breed. That way there'll always be horses." The best of those is an elusive silver stallion. Tyson reaches an agreement with Mitch that the silver stallion will be the last horse shot by his men. The stallion, "something that stands up for itself out there," binds Mitch and Sara and Tyson together and propel them all into a surprising, although inevitable, conclusion.
WILD HORSES is a modest little gem of a movie. The color is a little washed-out and it contains some short scenes of graphic violence. Save for that I strongly recommend it.
