Description

A shipment of government gold is lost when the pack train headed up by famous scout Kit Carson is wiped out. Only Carson miraculously escapes. Aided by a detachment of cavalry, Carson rounds up the outlaw band known as the Mystery Riders. Carson then leaves the soldiers and his Indian friend, Nakomas to bring in the prisoners, and rides furiously back to the trading post, where his little friend, Joan Fargo, disguised as a boy, has been keeping watch on Kraft, the man who Carson suspects is the secret leader of the Mystery Riders. When he is accused of being the leader of the Mystery Riders, Kraft swears his innocence and makes a quick getaway. In order to trap him, Carson and the troopers don the garb of the Mystery Riders with hope that Kraft, upon seeing his men, will be fooled into giving away the location of his secret hiding place for the gold. MASCOT PICTURES made serials under its own name from 1926 to 1935. After that, MASCOT and four other lesser Poverty Row studios were combined under the REPUBLIC PICTURES banner.

CARSON trivia:

Lane Chandler was a silent screen star who slipped into supporting roles in 'B' movies from the early 1930s on.

In his 35-year career (beginning in 1914), Slim Whitaker appeared in over 340 westerns. He has a small role here.

William Witney (several minor characters) was CARSON director Colbert Clark's brother-in-law. In 1937, Witney began his second (and principal) career as a director of western serials, movies and TV shows.

Stuntman-extraordinaire Yakima Canutt starred in a few silent-era westerns. He was also at times an assistant director, production coordinator, writer and stunt coordinator on dozens of great films. Here, Canutt is one of the Mystery Riders.

Iron Eyes Cody specialized in playing Native Americans, yet he was the son of Italian immigrant parents. Cody denied this even in court in 1996, when his heritage was challenged. Cody's most famous role was his briefest: he was the Indian who sheds a tear for a blighted American environment in "Keep America Beautiful" ads that ran from 1971 into the 1980s.

Good enough western serial action.......2002-07-30

This is a Mascot serial in 12 episodes, best seen a chapter at a time like when it was released. Johnny Mack Brown is the hero, Kit Carson. The storyline doesn't claim any historical accuracy at all, but you don't expect historical accuracy in a serial. It's good. The raw action isn't as continuous as it is in the later WILD WEST DAYS. However, you have Noah Beery as the chief bad guy. You don't want to be around that rascal when he "accidentally" drops his knife.

One weird thing here: when the bad guys move one victim's dead body, you have a series of dotted lines indicating their route. Strange! I never saw that in a serial or B movie before.

Description

Escorting a shipment of gold through the lawless plains proves a dangerous job for famous frontiersman Kit Carson in this thrilling twelve episode serial. Following an ambush on their convoy, Carson's friend Matt Fargo has hidden the gold, but fur trader Cyrus Kraft and his hooded Mystery Riders will stop at nothing to gain possession of the treasure. Carson is equally determined to keep the gold out of their hands, and with the help of Indian warrior Nakomas, Fargo's beautiful daughter Joan, and wagoneer Jim Bridge, he sets out to thwart the plans of the shadowy syndicate.Future Rough Rider and top western draw Johnny Mack Brown stars as American folk hero Kit Carson, and character actor Noah Beery, older brother of Oscar winner Wallace Beery, appears as Cyrus Kraft. Betsy King Ross, the world's youngest "trick rider," made her mark in films two years later when she co-starred with Gene Autry in the ground-breaking serial, The Phantom Empire.
