Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Little originality indeed.......2007-09-06
A good western, and yet. For one it is slightly too slow at times. That makes the film a little bit lengthy and that is not good in a western that must have a constant rhythm and when it slows down it is to create suspense in a situation that requires it. Here we have slow scenes that are not in anyway suspenseful. The second reason is that this film has little originality. It is a clear assemblage or patchwork of many references and borrowings from all the previous westerns ever made. And it is very difficult to invent anything in 1985 after also the Morricone and Clint Eastwood films, not to speak of the black and white TV series mile Dead or Alive. It is entertaining because of the way things are assembled and that is nearly all. Two elements create some perspective. First the presence of black settlers that reveal the strong racist trend in the West. Then the character of Stella, a midget saloon manageress. But apart from these two elements the rest is pretty standard. But I must admit the setting, the scenery is particularly beautiful. Some of the mountain and desert scenes are in gorgeous natural surroundings. Then the theme of the rotten sheriff (two in the film mind you, one rotten by authority and the other rotten by the local rancher) and the theme of the rancher who decides to push away, and kill if necessary, the farmers are very ordinary and common place, and once again nothing new is really added to the theme. All these borrowing, even in 1985, make the film systematically anaphoric and that is a shortcoming. Even the street duel is banal: check in Back to the Future III, the "character" of Clint Eastwood makes that anaphoric reference a lot more creative. Not here.

Worth many looks.......2007-05-14
Having grow up in the 40's & 50's, I love a good western. (even some bad ones)
But "Silverado" is right up there with the good ones.
Great cast, interesting storyline and the necessary good triumphs over evil ending.
Brian Dennehy is the perfect villain, while Kevin Kline the unexpected hero.
The rest of the cast including Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum keep this film moving. Never a dull moment!
Love watching it as I do many other horse operas.
Bad Copy.......2007-04-24
This is a terrific movie and is highly recommended. But Amazon advertises this product as "new" and it IS NOT. The DVD with the movie was scratched, and damaged, causing skips and gaps. Amazon does not allow ordinary feedback and has REFUSED to exchange or refund.
DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE FROM AMAZON.
Silverado.......2007-03-28
I got this DVD as a gift for my Dad. He had it on VHS, but wanted to update his collection. He really loved it.
A Very Exciting Western, With A Great Cast.......2007-01-31
This was a great Western. Very creative and adventerous, and a wonderful cast. Where else would you see a Monty Python alum as a sheriff in a Western?
This movie featured three of my favorite actors: Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and Jeff Goldblum. It also featured one of my favorite actresses, Rosanna Arquette, though she had such a small role even the worst actress couldn't mess that role up. Kevin Costner had a youthful exhuberance that I hadn't seen since from him. And I'm just mentioning my favorites.
I'll stop before I spoil any surprises. If you want a classic western, this is one.

Description
In Gene Autry's first color picture, Champion stars in the title role as a wild stallion who becomes a legend of the West. More exciting than any manhunt is the furious pursuit of an outlaw stallion, branded a killer, and the two-fisted cowboy who fights off a gun-crazed posse to win justice for the noble animal. Filmed in magnificent Cinecolor against the beauty of Arizona landscapes, The Strawberry Roan combines thrill-filled action with a tender story of loyalty and includes five great Western songs!

And it is very difficult to invent anything in 1985 after also the Morricone and Clint Eastwood films, not to speak of the black and white TV series mile Dead or Alive. Not here.

Back in the saddle again.......2007-08-31
If Gene Autry is remembered at all these days, it's probably for his classic recording of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Sports fans may recall that Autry was the popular owner of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team. But, once upon a time in the early 1930s, unassuming Gene Autry was THE singing cowboy. Some years before Roy Rogers came along we had Gene, his horse Champion, his guitar and the Melody Ranch.
Dozens of hour-length westerns in the Autry catalog are a fine testament to this decent man who once entertained legions of fans with his clean-cut yet exciting cowboy films. Ten of those fine old westerns are offered on this DVD set, so grab your Stetson and spurs, pard and let's get "back in the saddle again!"
Eight of these, plus an incredibly diverse selection of cowboy films are on the WESTERN CLASSICS 100 MOVIE PACK.

Cowboy singer turned owner of the Angels.......2007-07-03
Who wouldn't like Gene Autry, the perfect cowboy hero? Well, he couldn't act worth a lick. His movie characters were one dimensionable. The plots were shallow and more than a bit obvious. His singing sometimes erupted at strange moments. Still, these B movies evoke Saturday mornings at the Madison Theater in Mansfield, Ohio, of my youth when I judged not harshly and enjoyed more. Why else would I like these 10 examples of Autry's work?
As he grew older and could not longer play the romantic lead, could no longer sit a horse with some realism, he used the money he made to acquire the Los Angeles Angels baseball team. The players loved him, as movie fans had loved him. Apparently he had an aura of goodness about his head. That aura is still there, as I watched these movies.

Legends of the wide open spaces.......2007-09-15
WESTERN LEGENDS 50 MOVIE PACK is an outstanding box set from MILL CREEK of vintage titles that for the most part haven't been previously released by this manufacturer. The exceptions are four early John Wayne films and one from Roy Rogers. There are however four Rogers movies here not on any other MILL CREEK DVD package. There's a "new" Gene Autry movie, too!
"The Legend of the Lone Ranger" is a 1952 theatrical feature that was created by editing together the first three episodes of the Lone Ranger TV series. "Buckskin Frontier" has a cast of several established and future Hollywood heavyweights (see below). Olympic superstar Jim Thorpe plays a henchman in "Frontier Scout." Drew Barrymore's dad (John Jr.) stars in "High Lonesome." Jim Backus (Mr. Magoo/Thurston Howell III) does his western turn in "The Naked Hills." Rita Hayworth makes an early screen appearance in "Trouble in Texas," as Rita Cansino.
Also included are several Tom Tyler films, and works by Hoot Gibson, Buck Jones, Ken and Kermit Maynard, Tex Ritter, Johnny Mack Brown and more. WESTERN LEGENDS is truly a Who's Who of early to mid 20th Century cowboy stars, and a superb addition to any western movie library.
MILL CREEK's WESTERN CLASSICS 100 MOVIE PACK is the perfect companion to this DVD set.

Outstanding Set of Seldom Seen B-Western Films and Stars.......2007-08-18
This DVD box set is a real treat for fans of the B-Western. Mill Creek Entertainment's 50 Movie Pack features many Western stars of the 30s and 40s whose work we don't see much of these days, for example: Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele, Tom Tyler and Kermit Maynard, as well as sagebrush trios like The Range Busters (Ray "Crash" Corrigan, John "Dusty" King and Max "Alibi" Terhune) and the Rough Riders (Buck Jones, Tim McCoy and Raymond Hatton). Not to worry, folks - John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry get their due as well. Most of the films included are not to be found in other packages of Public Domain films and there are no spaghetti westerns in this set, either.

1. Gene Autry
Date of Birth: 29 September 1907 - Near Tioga, Texas
Date of Death: 2 October 1998 - Studio City, Los Angeles, California
Special footnote, Orvon Gene Autry was an American performer who gained fame as The Singing Cowboy on the radio, in movies and on television --- Discovered by film producer Nat Levine in 1934, he and Burnette made their film debut for Mascot Pictures Corp. "In Old Santa Fe" as part of a singing cowboy quartet; he was then given the starring role by Levine in 1935 in the 12-part serial "The Phantom Empire" --- Shortly thereafter, Mascot was absorbed by the formation of Republic Pictures Corp. and Autry went along to make a further 44 films up to 1940, all B westerns in which he played under his own name, rode his horse Champion, had Burnette as his regular sidekick and had many opportunities to sing in each film --- Autry became the top Western star at the box-office by 1937, reaching his national peak of popularity from 1940 to 1942. His Gene Autry Flying "A" Ranch Rodeo show debuted in 1940 --- Gene Autry is the only celebrity to have five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one in each of the five categories maintained by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce --- Radio, Films, Recordings, Television and Live Theater.
2. Smiley Burnette (aka: Lester Alvin Burnette)
Date of Birth: 18 March 1911 - Summum, Illinois
Date of Death: 16 February 1967 - Encino, California
Second special footnote, Lester Alvin (Smiley) Burnette an American singer-songwriter who could play as many as 100 different musical instruments, was a successful comedy actor in Western films over three decades --- The popularity of Burnette's Frog Millhouse character, with his trademark floppy black hat, was such that when Autry left for World War II service he did sidekicks duties with Eddie Dew, Sunset Carson and Bob Livingston, plus nine other films with Roy Rogers. After leaving Republic Pictures in 1944, Burnette became the sidekick to Charles Starrett at Columbia Pictures in the long Durango Kid series. Starrett starred in the series from 1944 until 1952, and that pairing resulted in more than 50 films. After the Starrett series was over, Burnette joined Autry for his final six films, all released by Columbia Pictures in 1953.
