This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!.......2007-09-16

This is definitly one of the best westerns made. Kurt Russell and company proves they can go back into time and become their characters.
Val Kilmer should have received an Oscar for Supporting Actor that year.
I watch this movie over and over. Yes, it is violent. But those were
violent times. Not much different from today!
It's a great movie, all in all.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Your Huckleberry.......2007-09-11

George Cosmatos' "Tombstone" is pure and simply a masterpiece, nothing more, nothing less.

It begins with a brief description of the Cowboys gang that ran things in that part of the frontier. The narrator (Robert Mitchum) describes them as the earliest example of organized crime in US history. Not true. But if you want to learn history by watching movies, be my guest. The narrative serves its purpose in setting up the viewer for the rest of the film.

Former Dodge City lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) arrives in Tombstone, AZ with his brothers, Morgan and Virgil (Bill Paxton and Sam Elliott). Law enforcement doesn't pay well and a silver boomtown is just the business opportunity they are looking for. Of course, there are things going on in Tombstone that Virgil Earp will not ignore and you always back brothers hand. Events lead up to the climatic shoot out at the OK Corral, the most documented gunfight in history.

What is great about this film? The cast of this film had fun disappearing into their roles.

Kurt Russell gives an excellent performance Wyatt Earp. His Wyatt is a hard, tough man with a sense of decency. Stephen Lang (a brilliant character actor on the level of John Turturro) is invisible behind the persona of Ike Clanton. Powers Boothe is Curly Bill Brocius. Dana Delany is Josephine Marcus the true love of Wyatt's life.

To add to this colorful cast, we have some interesting cameos. Charlton Heston plays a rancher sheltering Doc Holiday. Western movie icon, Harry Caray Jr., (one of the John Ford players) plays the elderly town marshal. A very fat Billy Bob Thornton is a card dealer who finds out just how hard Wyatt Earp can be.

But I come to the really outstanding performance belongs to Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. He steals every scene with a fine, nuanced performance. He's got the best lines in the script. Or maybe it seems that way because of the way he says them. His match is the sociopathic Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn). Their final confrontation is the now classic scene "I'm your huckleberry."

You'll want to watch this film more than once.

Description

The most celebrated lawman of the Old West rides again in this first-ever collection of thrilling episodes from the popular TV series The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Hugh O'Brian stars as the famed marshal whose exploits with Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson, and the Clanton Gang are boldly brought to life in episodes based on actual events. With his signature "Buntline Special" in hand, Wyatt Earp held posts in a series of increasingly lawless towns and battled dangerous men in his efforts to keep the peace. Through Ellsworth, Wichita, Dodge City, and Tombstone, Earp's reputation as a just and formidable marshal grew, culminating in a storied gunfight that would seal his legend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hugh O' Brien and Wyatt.......2007-04-02

This is a great dvd set. The best part is the recent interview with Hugh O'Brien. Except for some sun damage from probably spending too much time outdoors, Hugh looks absolutely terrific. For a recently married man of 82, he looks at least 20 years younger. Hugh discusses his career, his intense preparation for the role, his experience as the youngest drill instructor in the history of the marine corp, and other bits of information. The clarity of each episode is terrific. I only hope that other golden western dvd and detective shows are also soon released while the stars of these shows are still alive. Having them appear to introduce the dvd is a great touch.

5 out of 5 stars The life and legend of Wyatt Earp........2007-01-30

If you are a fan of Wyatt Earp this is a must to have in your western collection. Picture and sound are great. The movie is done the correct way even up to the shoot out. Like I said this is a must...

This is one of the best western series from the western era of
T.V. Hugh O'brien is excellent as Earp. The is a western for young
and old men.

3 out of 5 stars Almost but not quite ---- no cigar !.......2006-08-15

The other reviewers have glossed over the fact that Rhino has put out a package of a limited number of episodes. But to those of us who are full "Wyatt Earp" fans why could we not have the same treatment as most of the other classic TV shows have received ... that is, release Season 1, then Season 2, etc all in their entirety and in episodic order. This show was broadcast from 1955 to 1961 ... Rhino has thrown us a bone instead of the seven-course meal we deserve. The quality is good ... big deal ... now many of us have to continue to sit back and wait for someone to "do it correctly" ... it may never happen ... but Hugh O'Brian and the gang, including us fans, deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars From My "Growing Up" Years.......2005-11-09

I was around 10 years of age when this series ran on TV, and though I'm sure I did not see every episode I know I saw many of them. I'm glad that many DVDs are now coming out for us 'ole' TV western fans.

When I grew up in the fifties, 10-cent Saturday matinees abounded; with serials running in 12 parts or so. See one or two this Saturday and come back to the local Bijou next Saturday to see a couple more installments. After a couple of these on any given Saturday the theatre would then run a couple Rocky Lane, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, or Durango Kid feature westerns to round out your western Saturday late morning and early afternoon. It sure offered great babysitting for mom, too!

Now with the Western Channel and release of such DVDs as this one on Wyatt Earp we can get all we want, and relive 'those thrilling days of yesteryear." And wasn't Hugh O'Brien just born to play this role; can anyone think of anyone else doing better than this man did week-after-week-after-week?

Seriously this is a very well put together production, with only a couple flaws: One being the continual singing by the Ken Darby group, it gets inappropriate at times, and the other being only a selection of the entire shows. In one program on the first disc when Wyatt goes to Wichita you can tell at the end of the program that next week will be a followup, but the DVD doesn't have the next week, it skips forward to others. These are very minor complaints because for me just to have these DVDs are more than I ever hoped for.

So load up the ole Buntline special, saddle the horses, and join Wyatt's posse to rid the range of rapscallions, western style.

Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "historical picture" from Roy, Gabby, and the gang.......2006-02-24

First off, it's a typical Alpha reproduction - the only down side to this DVD that I care to look for since there are so many pluses to the movie. Hey, at least they're putting this stuff out there.
"Ridin' On a Rocky Road" is a good western song and fits in the movie more than most songs in singing cowboy westerns. Gabby plays Gabby Whitaker again and Sally Payne, who is delightful in her natural-gal way as she always is, plays his daughter. Her stage name is Queeny LaTour. Harry Woods does a bang-up job as the bad guy. You can tell this is one of Roy's earlier pictures since he has only one gun and no huge flowers on his shirt. I love those shirts, actually, and would love to have one - fashion be damned.
The plot revolves around the bad guys trying to steal Granny Carson's fledgling mine, and Tombstone has to learn respect for the law. As in all of Roy's movies, the story is better than average. The acting is better than average. Roy always did his best - no simple reading of lines like you get with a lot of these guys. Gabby steals every scene he's in, as always. You just gotta love Gabby, there's no one better.
A 6-horse stage! One way to tell it's a B-western is that it has a 4-horse stage. Proof Roy's B-westerns were better than most B-westerns. And hey, there's the rock formation where Captain Kirk fought the lizard guy! And guess what - Roy loses his hat and it stays lost. Talk about realism.
Happy trails, partners.
-Gospel

I have recently received a copy on DVD of this film and for the first few minutes I was not impressed by the films quality, however as time wears on you do not notice it too much. Overall for the price you can't expect too much, but the film is worth buying and watching. Hopefully more titles will be released.
From what I have in my collection so far, this budget series are unlike more expensive labels, uncut versions
and you do a decent DVD cover.
