Four classic BONANZA episodes on one DVD!!!.......2004-06-19

Platinum's TV Classics edition of the classic western series BONANZA is a true must-have for any fan of this landmark series!! In Volume Three of this edition,originally part of a two-disc DVD set that's on sale at Wal-Mart for $5.88!!,the following episodes include BADGE WITHOUT HONOR (9/24/60),THE BLOOD LINE (12/31/60),THE COURTSHIP (1/7/61),and DEATH AT DAWN (4/30/60).BADGE WITHOUT HONOR involves an escaped killer,who poses as the local sheriff,who searches Jason Blaine,a married man of the bride,who is a friend of the Cartwright family,who comes to take him back while he's the star witness in the murder trial of the Murdock Gang.In THE BLOOD LINE,directed by film and TV veteran Lewis Allen,Ben Cartwright accidentally kills a man in self-defense.But when the victim's son returns home,he wants to kill Ben! Next up,THE COURTSHIP has Hoss falling in love with the new woman in town (Julie Adams of "Creature From The Black Lagoon" fame).And finally,DEATH AT DAWN,the last episode of the first season,sees The Cartwrights and the local Sheriff involved in a murder innocent in which they hunt down the killer until the killer's hit man comes to destroy Virginia City and its people.These are exciting and enjoyable episodes of TV's longest-running western series,second close to GUNSMOKE!!! Platinum did an amazing job remastering both the picture and sound and even though this DVD doesn't contain the original theme music (since these shows are in the public domain and for copyright reasons),they used an orchestral version of "Return To The Ponderosa" as its opening theme which is great to listen to as it opens up the series!!! This is perhaps the best collection of BONANZA episodes out there that are in public domain and it's well worth the price!!! Check out my review for Volume Four of the series!!! Thank you Platinum for preserving this great and classic series on DVD!!!

These are classic "Bonanza" episodes. I would prefer that the videos include the original theme music, but I understand that copyright issues prevent that. The technical quality of the video is not the best, but the DVD is quite watchable. I'm happy to see "Bonanza" being released in DVD format, and look forward to more eps on DVD!

Struggles for justice amidst violence and lawlessness.......1999-08-16

Bonanza is the famous television western series, set in the vicinity of Virginia City, Nevada, during the years of the Civil War, soon after the discovery of the fabulous Comstock Silver Lode. Bonanza is the saga of the Cartwrights, a prosperous family of ranchers. The stories relate their struggles for justice amidst violence and lawlessness as they attempt to maintain and operate their timberland ranch, known as the Ponderosa Ranch. Many of these classics were produced in the early years of filmmaking. This means that primitive audio recording technique will be more noticeable in the DVD format, so will glitches in picture. These movies ("Desert Justice" & "Badge Without Honor" have been rescued from the film vaults in most cases and have not been restored. "Desert Justice" is the story of Dave Walker, one of Ben's ranch hands. Dave is accused of murdering the wife of Marshall Dowd. After the Cartwrights discover that Dave was beaten while in jail, they decide to accompany him to Los Angeles where his trial is to be held. "Badge Without Honor" is about a man named Gerald Eskith who comes to town claiming to be a Deputy Marshall. He wants to take the Cartwrights friend Jason Blaime to San Francisco to testify against the Murdock Gang. Adam, however, has his suspicions and decides to go along with them..... On the DVD (one episode on each side) you'll also find Interactive Menus, Interactive Film Trivia about Bonanza and information about the actors. A pity is the missing well-known "Bonanza"-tune. Now all the episodes start with a nasty kind of music. See Lorne Greene as Ben Cartwright, a three time widower; Pernell Roberts as his eldest son Adam; big Dan Blocker as son Hoss; Michael Landon as the youngest son, Little Joe. It's nice to see all the famous characters back on the screen.

BADGE WITHOUT HONOR - A stranger arrives to the city. He says to be deputy and he needs Jackson Blaine, a friend of Cartwright, to go with him to San Francisco to testify against the gang of Murdock. Adam, however, insists on accompanying them because he foresees something wrong with the stranger man of the law. THE MILL - The Cartwrights' neighbor Tom Edwards has lived as a paraplegic, ever since an accident involving Ben Cartwright and a gun. His ranch is going to waste. His wife Joyce is a longtime friend of Ben, and Ben decides to help the Edwards couple by making Tom a business proposition: the Cartwrights will build a grain mill on Edwards' land. In return, Ben only wants his investment money back, plus fifteen percent. Tom and his hired hand Ezekiel are suspicious of Ben, but Tom agrees to the deal. The Cartwright men build the mill, but tension begins to rise when Ezekiel makes comments which rekindle Tom's suspicion.
