The true story of the legendary American outlaws. This is the last years of the brothers' lives, revealing Frank (Johnny Cash) as a book-loving and family-oriented man and brother Jesse (Kris Kristofferson) as a money-hungry womanizer.

We thought the movie very good. Kept every ones attention.It was writen well.It is one of those movies that we will watch alot.We really like the cast that is in the movie.It was put togeater well.And is a ok movie for kids to watch.

Even by TV movie standards this is pretty bad.......2006-03-11

As much as you might want to renew your affection for Johny Cash in the wake of Walk the Line, steer clear of this movie. It will bring you up right quick on the limitations of Cash, Kristofferson and country music. Kristofferson can act but Cash is essentially playing himself as the family man with a guilt-ridden past. Sadly it's Cash that has to carry the movie.

The James gang was a nasty brutal bunch of murderers, and beyond one killing motivated by revenge, you really don't get the brutality. It's all the myth of Jesse James. He's a good ol' boy that just didn't like losing the Civil War. He's also dead shortly after the halfway mark of the movie.

The rest of the movie is about Frank James (Johny Cash) standing trial (he's acquitted - but Willie Nelson gets to testify on his behalf) and wondering if he should go after the man that killed his brother. Another actor (like Clint Eastwood) would have given a nuanced performance of the tensions between wanting revenge and knowing that the dead pretty much had it coming. Cash is just Cash.

Buy only if you are a diehard fan of Cash (he only sings on the credits) or really really curious, but be prepared to be disappointed.

This one should please Frank and Jesse James buffs who have longed to see a movie with various elements of James history and folklore that have been ignored in other films. Frank was a Southern Christian gentleman and student of the Bard and also a thief and killer. Cash does a fine job capturing his contradictions. Johnny, who can convey intelligence, heart, spirtuality and just as believably sing about killing a man just to watch him die, is brilliant here. Kristofferson is also superb as Jesse. Just as impressive are June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, and David Allan Coe. Sadly Willie's part is only a cameo, but it's pure gold. A fine movie that is sure to entertain fans of the cast, folks who love a good Western, and Frank & Jesse James enthusiasts.

Outstanding entertainment! One would think with all the musicians who star and have a part in this production, there would be some show of their tallent, but Johnny Cash, as Frank James actually struggles through "The Old Wooden Cross" as if he can't carry a tune in a bucket! Now that was precious.

Footnotes from the lives and legends of Frank and Jesse James that are often left out of other James movies are featured in this one. It's a charming TV movie that seems to be as close to the truth as legends can ever be. In other words, it takes a slightly more realistic approach to the legend, but still comes across like a whopping yarn your Southern grampa would tell you. I liked that. Don't expect too much action, but get ready to be charmed. Have a beer, settle back, and enjoy.

Incredible Movie.......2007-07-11

I live in the US but have the Region 2 DVD which runs at 175 minutes instead of the 120 minutes like the ones sold here. I wanted this movie so badly I took a chance on e-bay a few years ago and bought it from someone in the UK. Guess what? It works great on my DVD player. Apparently, if you are lucky, you can get a DVD player that plays the Region 2 DVD's. My DVD player is a JVC that I bought at Circuit City a few years ago. I was so glad because I couldn't stand the thought of getting the watered down version.

I watched this mini series when it first aired and loved it! I've been hoping whoever decides to put this stuff on dvd would come to their senses and put the 4 hour mini-series on dvd, instead of this watered down version they are selling, A Good Day to Die. I have seen Children of the Dust dvds offered on ebay but they are like region 2 or 4 and won't play on US/Canada dvd players. It almost makes me want to invest in an all region dvd player!!!

Thought about this movie since the age of 15..........2004-07-06

I first saw this movie back in 1995 when it aired on TV. I was then only 15 years old. I shrugged off hanging out with friends, doing homework, finishing my chores all for the sake of watching this... and wow, it sure was worth it. Now almost 10 years later, I found myself thinking about that movie, 'Children of the Dust'... and decided to get on the 'net and check it out. Well, I found it, though it was hard, since the name was changed. But wow! You can't imagine how happy I was to find it when I did! I'm thrilled to own the movie now, so that I can watch it when I please. Though, along with others, I too am dissapointed that they cut and edited this movie almost down to nothing. There was really no reason to do so. Too many vital scenes were cut... that's why I'm only giving this movie 4 stars instead of five.

I've never seen "Children of the Dust," and purchased this video on the basis of the reviews here. The cast is strong. I follow a lifelong interest in race relations, in the roots and sources of bigotry, and in what it takes for a racially prejudiced person to gain the self-enlightenment to change his or her views. This film presents a story of 19C America that, among other things, investigates this question. The diverse characters are well drawn and the story is strong.

The Movie is Great, But..........2007-06-30

Under "Format" it states it is Full Screen. I bought this from Amazon on June 8th, 2007, and it is Wide Screen, letterboxed. That is why I gave this one star...the bands at the top at bottom of the screen are so wide I can barely see the picture.

As for the movie itself, it is a touching, haunting love story. The acting is superb, the scenery is beautiful, and the sound track is wonderful. This is a tearjerker, though, so have a box of tissues handy when you watch it.

Interesting as a cultural history of the 1930's.......2003-11-02

A Great Depression morality tale, wherein the outlaws are really good boys who love their mother, and the capitalists and banker are really black-hearted crooks who prey on the innocent. I'd give it one star for its sheer tedium but a very youthful Roy and Trigger look terrific and who doesn't like Gabby Hayes? As usual in these old oaters, the horseriding is spectacular. Roy has one love song, while playing the pump organ. The movie inspired me to look up the history of the James gang to find out what they were actually like.

This is most likely the best Roy Rogers dvd on the market today. 3 restored movies from ROAN GROUP ARCHIVAL ENTERTAINMENT ( on one disc ) and they're all winners!
DAYS OF JESSE JAMES (1939) directed by Joe Kane has Roy & Gabby siding with Jesse played by Don "Red" Barry.
ROLL ON TEXAS MOON (1946) directed by William Whitney is one of my personal favorites as Roy tries to clear up a scrap between the sheepmen and cattlemen. I like when Gabby ( a cattleman ) is always being followed by Dale's pet lamb. He yells, " ...quit follerin' me ya walkin' lamb chop! "...This is the uncut theatrical version.
KING OF THE COWBOYS (1943) also directed by Joe Kane is the big WINNER here. Combining several source prints this version runs longer than it's original theatrical version & also includes alternate scenes as a bonus.
All 3 films LOOK GREAT & it's a real treat to watch them presented as such.
Another great bonus is a Trucolor short of Roy welcoming Roy Rogers Riders Club members to this weeks movie at the local theater.
All in all this dvd is A MUST for all Roy Rogers Fans!!!
As Gabby would say," That's the ticket by crackie!".
BUY THIS.

Good Old Fashioned Western.......2000-09-02

A great trio of films with the BEST cowboy EVER. Being a Brit who grew up going to Saturday morning pictures,its great to be able to see some of his films in SUPERB clarity and pretty good sound. A nice touch was the Roy Rogers Club short which is also the great thing about DVD, you get a lot for your money. All in all, a great deal and good films. Please keep them coming!
