...it won't be because Roy (as Hickcock) and Gabby didn't try their best. It's 1864 and America may fall apart because of the Civil War. Foreign powers would like to pick up the pieces, especially gold-rich California. A representative of one of those foreign powers is organizing and funding chaos, murder and mayhem perpetrated by Morell's Overland Raiders.

Sally Payne plays Calamity Jane. She's always a delight and as a singing saloon gal Calamity, she's really in her element. She even steals a scene from Gabby (a seemingly impossible feat). Roy and Gabby were the best and this outing is as good as any of them. There's lots of riding in great western scenery, chasing and shootouts. Joseph Kane knew what made a good Saturday afternoon western. Besides, they had to have the good riding scenes so Trigger could do his stuff.

The extras on the DVD are a delight for me. This one has Trigger in Hawaii with 6 kids on his back.

Be Forewarned.......2004-03-27

Be forewarned....the very opening of the movie on this DVD has been truncated. The source for these transfers is evidently a program hosted by Roy and Dale in their later years. While I have no problem with the DVD's containing the intros, I did not pay for a movie that is not in its entirety...COMPLETE opening credits and all.

Secondly, the source is not good either. Roan Group did a much better job with their Roy Roger movie transfers.

I am a Roy Rogers fan and fondly remember watching his films growing up. This DVD has two of his films which represent his career as a singing cowboy. Oh how the memories came back watching Roy and Gabby go after the desperadoes. Roy always gets the girl... but like the true gentleman he was he never kisses the girl! A great double feature for children and a very nice bargain. Both prints are very nice.

Secondly, the source is not good either. Roan Group did a much better job with their Roy Roger movie transfers.

In spite of being "Authorized by the Roy Rogers Estate"...which made me assume this a safe purchase....these Happy Trails Theatre DVD's are anything BUT high quality.

Young Bill Hickok (Roy Rogers) is a freighting company relay station agent assigned to escort a shipment of gold. Bill entrusts it with his friend Gabby Whittaker (George Hayes) who is to secretly take it across the California line with a pack of horses he is herding. He is accompanied by Calamity Jane Canary (Sally Payne), his niece who is in love with Hickok. Bill is in love with Louise Mason (Jacqueline Wells), daughter of a Southern officer, to whom he confides his plans for the gold shipment. Louise is concerned with Bill's safety and confides her misgivings to Nicholas Tower (John Miljan) who, unknowing to her, is a Eureopean agent sent to America to seize western territory and gain control of California's gold. His henchman steal the gold from Gabby and Tower convinces the citizens that Hickok is the guilty party. Bill is thrown in jail and it is only through the efforts of Calamity Jane, the girl whose love he can not return, that he escapes and captures Tower and his band in a climax which hinges on the assassination of President Lincoln. Roy Rogers, as Hickok, also manages to pleasantly sing his way through "When the Shadows Fall on the Rockies," "A Cowboy Wedding," "I'll Keep on Singing a Song" and "Up and Down the Prairie" with scarcely a yodel heard.
