Watch it and get fired up!.......2007-01-27
A good high-level overview DVD of three main hiking trails (North and South Kaibab and the Bright Angel Trail).
The actual film of some trail sections, along with the topographical and geological graphics, were reasonably well done and helpful.
Since we are doing the hikes in the winter, it would have helped us if there was more detail regarding the likely conditions and equipment required for the snow and ice that we are expecting.
One the other hand, the DVD did give us a sense of what the trails are like, and we will plan for the worst, and hope for the best!
If You're Going to Hike - Get this Video!!!.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent introduction to the trails of the Grand Canyon. Not only do they describe the trails, distances, and difficulty level, but also valuable information on how to hike the trails without hurting yourself. In order to prepare, they provide you with brief guidelines as to your cardio ability, supplies you will need, and what to expect during your hike (including water/rest breaks). They also give some information as to locations for water and lodging. We found this information invaluable in planning our trip!
Excellent Review for 1st time visitors!.......2006-08-19
I think this is an excellent DVD for a 1st time vistor to the Grand Canyon. The video gives one a great start for the geology of the canyon and breaks down the 3 major trails and their advantages and disadvantages. I can not wait to go visit!!1
Good for first-time corridor hikes down to Phantom Ranch.......2006-07-03
If you get a reservation at Phantom Ranch (call WAY in advance) which is the ranch down at the bottom of the canyon with REAL beds, you do not get a video from the park, at least I did not and I just hiked down and back last Memorial Day. I have seen this video and found it very valuable in planning my first hike in the canyon down the South Kaibab trail and back up the Bright Angel trail which are the main trails from the South Rim and are called the corridor trails. If you are a regular Canyon hiker you are probably already hiking other trails and already know the stuff presented here. If you are first-timer like me, this is good to get.
Worthwhile for the first-time or casual Grand Canyon hiker.......2006-07-02
A good, complete introduction to the corridor trails including helpful information about the geology, and practical hiking tips. More experienced hikers may find it to be a little basic, but what do you want from a video that is, after all, about the heavily travelled main trails. If you are hiking these trails you are probably either a first-time or casual Grand Canyon hiker anyway. I wish McNamara would do an advanced sequel with information about the less-travelled trails!

Very Informative Guide.......2007-05-21
This is an excellent guide to the Canyon for anyone who's thinking about hiking there. I've hiked in the Canyon numerous times and this DVD is right on the money in describing the various trails, trailhead locations, degree of difficulty, what you'll see, etc. There's also sections (with contact info) on the various lodging facilities on both rims. The narration is enjoyable, the filming is first rate and the DVD is very easy to use. Even for those of you who have hiked these trails it's a fun way to relive those experiences (as I did). I highly recommend it.
The Grand Canyon is not just for burros anymore.......2007-05-18
When it comes to the Grand Canyon, there are three different kind of people:
1) Those who have been there already
2) Those who want to go there
3) Those who don't think they want to go there
This DVD is for all of these types of people: for those who have already been there, it is a combination souvenir/reminder of their trip and, for almost all of them, a window into areas of the Grand Canyon they probably didn't get a chance to explore and possibly didn't even know existed.
For those who want to go (and for those who have been and want to return), it is a valuable guide helping them to plan their trip so as to make the most of their time there and enjoy the park to the full.
In addition to the beautiful photography and interesting narrative, this hiking guide is chock full of tips on where to go, when, and how to prepare yourself when making your foray into the depths of this natural wonder. A great many hiking trails are outlined in detail, the videographer guiding you along the way on trips of various lengths and skill/stamina levels.
For the final demographic (those who don't think they want to go to the Grand Canyon) they may want to think again--Arizona's Grand Canyon is not "just a big hole in the ground." And it offers differing "faces" to its visitors depending on when they go--which season of the year and even time of day. Of course, one's exact location above or from within the canyon can make all the difference, too.
If it is simply impossible for a person to go, watching this DVD is the next-best thing to being there--vicariously accompany the videographer/narrator Jon Shannon as he does the walking for you.
In short, this DVD is entertaining, educational, and can save you lots of time, money, and headaches on your trip to this awe-inspiring corner of the Great American West.

Beware along the trail.......2001-05-01
Grand Canyon Trail is the song Roy sings. Actually, the plot borrows heavily on Stan & Laurel's Way Out West. A hotel, a mine a mule... Even the sheriff might be James Finlayson himself! Film connoisseurs will also recognize in Roy and Jane Frazee's performance a hint of John Wayne and Ella Raines in Tall in the Saddle. It's too bad the video quality is so poor it looks like it's raining all the time. Although the box reads 67 minutes, the movie is really 57 minutes long, and you can tell when something is missing.
