Parents should be aware that this movie is NOT a fantasy/sci-fi film despite the way it's being marketed. I think the studio decided that most viewers would have read the book before seeing it, and therefore decided that the somewhat-misleading campaign was okay. I'd be very angry if I had watched it with younger children.
This movie is highly entertaining, with its fabulous tales of make-believe and the dilemma we can all relate to - children fleeing bullies and the cruel world that is public school - but tragedy keeps it from being a real family movie. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone under 12. I expected to see a fantasy movie, and this was anything but.
The best thing about "Bridge to Terabithia" is not its terrific special effects, or even its story, but the fabulous performances from its youthful stars. I hope to see more of them in the future, and hope they don't get lost in Hollywood's child-star mill.

If you listen very carefully throughout the movie, you will hear a very high-pitched spinning sound throughout the soundtrack. Unfortunately, by the end of the movie you will come to understand that the source of the disturbing audio is Walt Disney spinning with disgust in his grave. Shame on you Walt Disney Company!

It was a well done movie. Got it and watched with my grandson. Didn't hold his interest the whole time or mine. It was well done and it was good. Just wasn't one of my big favorites but you might enjoy it more than we did.

This is the sort of movie that's VERY hard to leave a review for. You dont' want to ruin it for those that HAVENT read the book.
Parents be warned- it was poorly marketed as a FANTASTY, it is not. It has religious undertones, and suprisingly deep content for a childrens film. If you are even sensitive in the LEAST you WILL CRY. I know an older guy, who watched it with his daughter and cried for quite some time afterward. I cried for at least twenty minutes.
The acting by the two leads, and the adult characters is excellent. Annasophia has a Dakota Fanning-like quality to her, making her the PERFECT Leslie, and Josh Huchenson (I honestly cannot remember HOW to spell his last name) as Jesse, really does a fantastic job on his part. (But he's already proven to be a good actor from what we've seen of him on "Zathura".)
Parents- you might want to watch this with your kids and have a "chat" afterward.
Tepid tale of childhood friends.......2007-09-07
Ten-year old Jess, bullied at school and ignored at home, meets new girl Leslie, who's also looked upon as a weirdo and outsider. The two become friends and use their imagination to turn a secret spot in the woods into a beautiful kingdom. In "Terabithia," they rule over the strange but good creatures and battle the Dark Lord. Everything is great, until one day when Jess doesn't come to play.
This movie could have, and should have been wonderful, with flights of fancy that made me say, "WOW!" and touching moments that left me teary. Unfortunately, it missed the mark. The fantasy land the children created wasn't that big of a deal; we only saw fleeting glimpses of it and never had time to be awed by its wonder and wish it were real. The two young leads, Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb, were competent, but not special. Neither of them had the charisma to own the screen and make me care about them. Of course, the big culprit was the script, which tried to include too much, ending up with not enough. We get Jess' poverty, artistic talent, and loneliness, Leslie's quirkiness and pluck, the bullies at school, his crush on his teacher, and the often-annoying cute younger sister, complete with precious lisp; with all this, there wasn't time to make Terabithia seem real or as fantastic as it should have been. The scene that should have elicited tears was abrupt and completely lacking in drama and power. So, it's an OK movie if you're stuck watching it on a plane, but not a flick to buy, unless your kids are fans of the book. 2.5 stars.

Although I was expecting something more along the lines of a fantasy world, Bridge to Terabithia does have enough merit to capture you in its distinguishable storyline, cinematography, etc. It really converys life of young adults in relation to their lives at home, school, etc. However, you must watch it to see it in its glory because a review is not much to go on since every individual has their own sense of what is good and not.
Disney plays a bold move........2007-08-16
Well this movie is straight out of left field for Disney. I cannot remember when Disney last released a movie with so many issues tackled in it. Talk about a roller coaster of a ride, we are taken from levity to despair in the matter of 60 minutes.
I must congratulate Disney for having the fortitude to tackle all the issues it has in this movie some of which are love, death, imagination, fantasy, abuse, poverty, creativity, freedom of expression, and the list goes on.
On a technical note I found the BD version to be excellent in both video and audio transfers. However the standout for me is the performances of the children who are just fantastic.

I rented this initially, ignoring it in the theaters, because it was promoted as a "Narnia" clone, and my kids had no interest in seeing it. When I got it home, I had NO idea what to expect, and I popped it in one late night to watch it because it was due back the next day.
I was wondered, surprised, and crying like a baby by the end. I have NEVER had any movie hit me the way this one did. No, not even "my girl"...I went and hugged my wife and kids afterwords and told them how much I loved them.
This movie is SO important on so many levels, but it would not be powerful without the wonderful acting of the main hero and heroine...they give performances as real, convincing and as moving as any adult I've ever seen, and perhaps even more so. This movie is about growing up, opening your mind, living life to it's fullest for every moment, making friends, losing friends, making memories, making families, using your imagination, and discovery.
I CANNOT recommend this movie highly enough. For those who have seen the "newer" ads and are scared away by the potential "tear-jerking", just know that it's never gratuitous, and that, no matter what, you WILL be a better person after watching this movie...guaranteed.

But I will probably take a look at them, especially after seeing this movie. The movie itself is quite interesting, in the fact that so very few films actually incorporate imagination as the driving force in the story. Most stories tend to cope out, in movies regarding magical worlds, by making it seem as though the protagonists stumble upon secret entrances to such world.
Terabithia, however, doesn't shy away from the fact that it's magical world (a surprisingly full world) is born out of two people's imagination. This, in my opinion, makes this magical world even more powerful, because it relies on the magic of our imagination.

Highly recommend this movie. I usually never see movies in the theater, I always wait for them to come out on dvd. I wish I had seen this movie earlier in the theater. Very good picture quality in Blu-Ray.

A Star That Time Forgot.......2006-11-14
The Hollywood star system is a funny game. Some stars shoot very, very brightly for a long time and then for some reason fade out and are forgotten forever.
Other stars - think James Dean - only do a couple of movies, but seem to remain popular forever.
There is really no way to explain this interesting phenomenon.
What it does do is make it possible for dedicated film buffs to discover long forgotten talent and thrill to different movies than the ones that seem to be shown over and over again on cable.
Johnny Mack Brown is this type of star. He was huge in the 1930s and appeared in dozens of films. In some ways he was as popular as Bruce Willis is today.
Yet, almost no one remembers him.
If you are new to the Johnny Mark Brown ouvre of film, and you like westerns, I'd suggest you give it a shot.
This is a great, classic western film and it showcases exactly why Brown was so popular back in his day. He brings a charisma to the role that makes the film truly special and not just another Holywood hack job western.
The plot is fairly standard - in fact it's based like so many other films of it's time on the real life events in Deadwood - a town without law enforcement.
It will come as no surprise that Brown saves the day and the badguys are eventually run out of town and/or killed. That's what has to happen in a Western.
What makes it special is the way Brown sucks us into his charcater, makes us root for him and leaves us cheering as the final credits roll.
Five stars well earned.
Very Early Western.......2006-05-23
This is one of the earliest well produced sound westerns. As such, it works as the template for many similar films that would come out in the 1940s and even some modern films. The plot is the same as "Last Man Standing" where a group of outlaws take over an entire town adn a hero with a six gun has to come in and clean it up because the cops are too scared to do anything about it. Of course the hero rides into town, kills the bad guys and lets innocent people live in peace. There is a reason that after this film came out Hollywood kept making more movies with the same plot.

Our "Golden Age"club meets each Thursday to view movies from the last century (that is from the 30s and 40s, or even earlier years). We have many die-hard Johnny Mack Brown fans in our club and there was a near riot last week when it was announced that we would be viewing one of his classic Movies on DVD. There was-expectedly-a lot of backslapping and excited banter as the boys filed out of the room. Johnny's ability to hold your attention is outstanding and we felt we had spent our time profitably. Thanks a2zcds for preserving this old movie on DVD. The picture and audio quality are outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the movie!"

Hackel - Producer), George Plympton (Screenwriter) ... the cast include Johnny Mack Brown (Jim Blake), Lucile Browne (Helen Carter), John Merton (Harve Tarlton), Charles King (Lanning), Ted Adams (Estaban Salano), John Van Pelt (Tex), Ed Cassidy (Grimby), Horace Murphy (Carter), Dick Curtis (Kirk/a Miner ), earl Dwire (Miner), Artie Ortego (Card Player), Hal Price (miner) . . . . . long running Johnny Mack Brown series turned out in the early '40s...the story line has two of the cast Johnny Mack Brown and John Merton finding a goldmine and becoming partners...Merton's background is a shakey one of the outlaws life...Brown wants to give Merton every break he can and change his evil ways...Lucile Browne has a plan to open Johnny Macks eyes, will he see Merton for what he is...can it be that Lucile will run off with Merton, thus stopping a bullet meant for our hero Brown...there's an exciting fistfight between Johnny Mack and Charles King that is well worth the price of a ticket...will the final showdown live up to all we expect from the Johnny Mack Brown Supreme films series...the screenplay by George Plympton is over the top and gives the B-Western fans all the excitement and drama we long for ... a particular favorite of mine . . . . . special footnote, actor Charles King was among the top five "Best of the Badmen" (according to a new book by Boyd Magers, Bob Nareau and Bobby Copeland)...King was a big man, but as agile as a cat during his fight scenes with Johnny Mack Brown, Buster Crabbe, Tex Ritter, The Rough Riders and Bob Steele...King appeared in 400 films and 350 were in sound including many cliffhangers...he was the heavy we loved to hate.........meanwhile back to another great Johnny Mack B-Western provided by Supreme Pictures during their heyday of the early '30s.
The second feature is from Republic Pictures "BOOT HILL BRIGADE" (1937) (56 min/B&W) ... Under Sam Newfield (Director), A.W. Hackel (Producer), Harry F. Luby (Editor) ... the cast include Johnny Mack Brown (Lon Cardigan), Claire Rochelle (Bobbie Reynolds), Dick Curtis (Bull Berke), Horace Murphy (Calico Haynes), Frank LaRue (Jeff Reynolds), Edward Cassidy (John Porter), Bobby Nelson (Tug Murdock), Frank Ball (Murdock), Steve Clark (Holbrook), Frank Ellis (Brown) . . . . . the story line is excellent with outstanding productions values as Johnny Mack Brown and Dick Curtis are once again on the opposite side of the fence...is there a plot to hire gunfighters and make widows out of the ranchers wives...the real culprit is Ed Cassidy who is behind all of the scullduggery, in a land grabbing scheme...can the homesteaders rely on Johnny Mack to bring all the polecats to justice...watch the final few minutes in a big knockdown drag out fight between our hero and one of the best fistfights...well it's not over yet until Johnny Mack Brown gives the heavy his walking papers. ... the scenery in this oater is outstanding and cinematographer Bert Longenecker is the reason . . . . . special footnote, tall in the saddle actor Dick Curtis was Columbia Pictures main villain in just about every Charles Starrett and Johnny Mack Brown B-Westerns, Curtis also appeared in a few "Three Stooges" comedy films, down the road built "Pioneertown" in partnership with cowboy star Russell Hayden for B-Western locations . . . . . another footnote, actor Edward Cassidy appeared in more than some 218 films, mainly serials and B-Westerns as a judge, sheriff and sometimes on the wrong side of the law . . . . . another great B-Western for Johnny Mack Brown under the Republic Pictures banner, proves to be one of his most exciting performances.

Bobby J.
