Pathfinder is a curious, cross-genre movie with elements of horror, sword-clanging fantasy, historical fiction, and Native American mysticism. A classic story of an outsider-hero, Pathfinder is set approximately five centuries before Columbus' arrival in the New World, a time when Vikings were claiming real estate in Greenland and eastern North America. A young Norse boy is abandoned by his disapproving, conqueror-father and adopted by an aboriginal tribe. He grows up to become Ghost (Karl Urban), almost-but-not-entirely accepted by natives, yet a fierce swordsman and defender of Indians after a terrible assault on those whom he loves best. Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) plays the fiercest of the invaders, a merciless leader who tangles with Ghost's inherent prowess as a fighter, and engages in a psychological as well as physical struggle with him in the film's final third, which involves a harrowing journey through an avalanche-prone mountain path. Russell Means (The Last of the Mohicans) is a typically comforting presence as the all-wise Pathfinder, leader of a tribal nation and Ghost's supporter, while Moon Bloodgood (Eight Below) is outstanding as a love interest with nerves of steel. Marcus Nispel (who directed the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) guides the brutal if often exhilarating action as if it were amplified history. He makes the point for a contemporary audience that Vikings were as terrifying a danger to those whom they conquered as, say, Klingons are in Star Trek--precisely by making his Vikings seem so reminiscent of Klingons. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
Almost a great movie.......2007-09-14
If you like violence, then Pathfinder more than delivers. But if you like substance look elsewhere. That is the best way to sum up this film. The biggest fault I found in it was that they more or less took a glass is half full approach.
The story had a great deal of potential. The Viking exploration of North America is a topic that has never really been touched by Hollywood. And with the recent love affair that has existed with historical epics (see Troy, Alexander, 300, and the television series Rome) a look at Viking and Native American history sounded quite refreshing. And in some ways, this film certainly captured the imagery of the times right. The Native Americans presented here are primitive, but prosperous. The Vikings are presented as blood thirsty killing machines, and indeed, I imagine that to the Native Americans of the time, the Vikings appeared as just that.
The story is that of an abandoned viking child, left behind by an uncaring father. He is adopted by a Native American tribe, and among them finds near acceptance and happiness. But when the Vikings return, his bloody roots begin to take prominence as he fights in defense of his adopted people.
The action scenes in this film more than deliver. The sword swinging antics are gleefully violent, and the odds stacked against our hero are perfectly overwhelming, making his victory all the sweeter. And in fact, they paid surprising attention to a few oft ignored historical tidbits; the vikings did, in fact, have superior weaponry than the Native Americans, but in North America they faced totally alien weather and terrain.
However, that is where this movie lost steam. The characters are all types, with little, if any, development in their personalities and motives. The story itself is sadly two dimensional, for how promising the concept was. Our hero is intended to appear as an underdog facing overwhelming odds, but his intelligence and prowess make him seem almost superhuman, so in the end his victory over the bad guys seems far less astounding.
In the end, Pathfinder left me a bit wanting for more. So many elements were right, but yet so many were absent as well. Almost a great movie.
How can you not like Karl Urban??.......2007-09-07
The movie is a bit gory, but it tells a good tale. I liked the strategies Ghost used to battle the Vikings. He was outnumbered and needed to use his wits in order to defeat them.
It's all in the ending........2007-09-06
This is based on the vikings who came to north america long before christopher columbus had dreamed of doing so. Now what you will expect in this movie is plenty of fighting and action and indeed there is plenty. But this is also filled with some very beautiful and soft-spoken characters as well.
Should you get this movie?
- If you like a beautiful undertone to the presentation of characters in a story, this may peak your interest.
- If you get off on decapitation after decapitation, this also may be right up your alley.
- if you're looking for a movie thats going to feel like an exotic fairy-tale with gore, heroes, villians and the occasional fools who get in the cross-fire. This is the movie for you.
BTW, big Karl Urban fan - check him out in Doom. I think he had a better role in there. Though this is admittedly the better movie.
Good Movie That Slipped Under The Radar.......2007-09-05
I first saw a preview for "Pathfinder" when I went to see "300". I wanted to see it, but I didn't even know it came out in the movies. Next thing I knew, it was on DVD.
This was a good movie with a good story line and great fight scenes. Not as "Blood and Gore" as I thought. It reminded me a lot of "Apocalypto" with "300" style fight scenes. "Unrated" version? "300" was worse and it was rated "R". Good movie. I'll definitly buy this one.
Pathfinder = a really good film!.......2007-09-05
Pathfinder is a really well done film. Great landscapes, costume design, acting and plot. The movie is underrated and underappreciated. It reminded me a lot of Apocalypto meets 13th Warrior, and skips cheezy liners and zingers, and a flashy soundtrack. Not to be missed by epic film and dark ages history buffs alike.

Adapted from a Will Weaver story, Ali Selim's Sweet Land is a truly sweet story about unlikely immigrant lovers whose struggle for integration into 1920's America earns them a work ethic more American than many of their narrow-minded neighbors. Set in rural Minnesota, the sentimental film focuses on tribulations that Scandinavian settlers experienced, with a cinematic serenity reminiscent of Terrence Malik's Days of Heaven. Norwegian farmer Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee) invites a non-English speaking German siren, Inge Alltenburg (Elizabeth Reaser), to relocate and marry him, but discovers that neither the town's Lutheran pastor (John Heard) nor the local judge will marry a German into their community for fear of wartime German spies. Inge finds friendship in neighbors Frandsen (Alan Cumming) and his wife, Brownie (Alex Kingston), who disregarding local gossip, welcome her into their home. Finally, Inge proves herself, settling in so that Sweet Land's historical narrative is framed by Inge, fifty years later, speaking to her adult son about her husband's death and their plot of land. This multi-generational tale of social acceptance and land ownership is ultimately the story of America, though the regional specificity of Sweet Land will speak especially to those familiar with Midwestern culture. --Trinie Dalton
Description
Inge (Elizabeth Reaser) is a feisty German mail-order bride who has come to Minnesota to marry Olaf (Tim Guinee), a young Norwegian immigrant farmer of few words. But in a post-WWI, anti-German climate, the local minister (John Heard) openly forbids the marriage. Inge and Olaf fall in love despite the town's disapproval. But when the town banker (Ned Beatty) attempts to foreclose on the farm of his friend Frandsen (Alan Cumming), Olaf takes a stand...and the community unites around the young couple, finally accepting Inge as one of their own.

Good acting, moves slowly!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-09-17
The acting is very good and the scenery is spectacular.
The movie tends to move alittle to slow....could have more
story especially after they marry.
Great love story!.......2007-09-06
This movie was beautifully written, directed and acted. I was very impressed with the soundtrack as well. Though the movie is not action packed, it is filled with well developed characters and interesting plot turns. The gradual love story that builds through the entire film is entertaining right up to the end. I would highly recommend this movie!
Sweet Land - sweet movie.......2007-08-25
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the steady, quiet, loving pace of this movie. There are many issues of acceptance, faith, and determination that are woven into the story. It is beautifully filmed and we loved the characters. We highly recommend this movie for just about anyone.
Hypnotically Quiet, but No Less Passionate. .......2007-08-24
"Sweet Land" is an unusual love story set among homesteading immigrants in Minnesota farm country shortly after World War I. Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee) came to the US from Norway in 1910, moved west, cleared some land, and became a farmer. A decade later, his parents in Norway find him a wife. Inge Allenberg (Elizabeth Reaser) arrives by train with 2 suitcases and her indispensable phonograph. But Inge is a German national. Post-war sentiment toward Germans prevent the minister and judge from marrying the couple. Olaf is frustrated by the situation, but Inge is determined to be his wife.
"Sweet Land" director Ali Selim adapted the film from Will Weaver's short story "A Gravestone Made of Wheat". The story of Inge and Olaf provides an window on an American culture rarely seen in film. The farms' placid beauty defies the harsh realities of eking out a living in this fickle environment. I was entranced by the quietness that results from Olaf's laconic nature and Inge's inability to speak English. The actors do a splendid job of conveying Inge's resolve and Olaf's frustrated longing and fear of this stranger with few words. "Sweet Land"'s framing device is awkward, but it does give the story context and leaves the audience satisfied to know how things turned out.
The DVD (20th Century Fox 2007): There is one featurette, a theatrical trailer (2 ½ min), and an audio commentary. "Sweet Land: A Labor of Love Story" (11 min) interviews director Ali Selim about his intentions and talks with the cast about their characters and themes. The audio commentary is by writer/director Ali Selim, actors Tim Guinee and Elizabeth Reaser, editor James Stanger, and producer Gil Bellows. Selim and Stanger discuss the framing device. Selim talks about adapting the story. Also discussed are locations, the score, performances, shooting anecdotes, and the actors share their experiences. Subtitles for the film are available in English, Spanish, and French.
A Smart and Enjoyable Film.......2007-08-13
Sweet Land is a film which is enjoyable time after time for the nuances of the writing, the acting and the beautiful cinematography. Because of the focus of the film on immigrant brides, and the reality of the language barriers, my second viewing was like seeing a sequel. The actors brought real depth to the subject matter and I especially appreciated the development of the relationships in the community. A great film for the whole family.

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh
Description
A "modern" young woman of the 16th century, Danielle (Barrymore) is as independent and wise as she is beautiful and kind. Against remarkable odds, she stands up to her scheming stepmother (Huston) and works miracles on the lives of everyone around her, including the crown prince of France (Dougray Scott)! Now you can relive this captivating, contemporary retelling of the classic fairytale.

One of my favorite movies of all time!!!.......2007-07-20
This movie truly represents an awesome version of the cinderella story...it's such a great chick flick for all the girls to have on a girls night with popcorn and goodies. I loved all of the choice of actors/actresses, they truly fit the charachters well. Good choice in costuming as well, very beautiful costumes and the countryside was absolutely awesome. Go buy it, and have a girls night in your pajamas with lots of goodies. You will be truly happy with this purchase.
I will love Ever After forever after.......2007-06-29
This is the kind of movie you will watch over and over again with your daughter or your grandchildren (or by yourself on a day you need some cheering up). A time-honored story, beautifully done, and updated just enough--but not contemporized (thank goodness).
First there was "Pride and Prejudice" then "Ever After".......2007-06-29
"Pride and Prejudice" was the original formula: 1. a smart whitty character with a sharp tongue offsetting a royal admirer 2. A champion, who extends mercy and deliverance 3. A fairtale marriage to Prince Charming 4. They live happily ever after
The Cinderella story is more intriquing because the central character brings moral issues too the big screen: 1. Recognition of the middle and lower class rights - power resides with the people, not the rulers 2. the vices of involuntary servitude - bondage is abominable 3. the attractiveness of free thought and opinion - the mind is beautiful 4. Intellectual class fits with the wealth class (wealth, values, and religion) difference must be dealt with 5. Beauty overshadows poverty (commitment, passion, and intimacy) 6. Liberty is more compelling than power. (inalienable rights of man - philosophy of law) 7. Love transcends tradition. (Faith, Hope, Mercy, Love, Glory, and Beauty)

For Family Guy fans, there are no freakin' sweeter words than "Never Before Seen." A triumphant homecoming for the Griffins, Stewie Griffin is not so much a movie as it is a not-yet-aired three-episode story arc enhanced with a home-video-exclusive "red carpet premiere" prologue and an epilogue (capped, of course, with a fart joke). Family Guy's resurrection is a television miracle, and its creators have rewarded the faithful by picking up right where they left off, offending any and all sensibilities (recasting Jesus as comic magician Art Metrano), dissing the celebrity disenfranchised (Ellen Cleghorne references, anyone?), and generally taking potshots at anyone on their enemies list (Stewie breaks the neck of a reporter for Entertainment Weekly, the magazine that once called Family Guy "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). The Untold Story! is a star vehicle for Family Guy 's breakout character, in which the mega maniacal and matricidal infant has a Grinch-like change of heart after a near-death experience (and a disturbing encounter with Steve Allen in Hell) and, more life-altering, discovers a football-pated man who could be his father (the truth is more shocking!). As go the gags, so goes Family Guy, and there are enough good ones here to compensate for the many misfires. The Miller-esque (as in Dennis) penchant for channeling arcane pop culture can grow tiresome. But for those who do remember the words to the Who's the Boss theme song, know (or still care) who Steve Bartman is, and are always up for "a sexy party," this will be the greatest story ever untold. --Donald Liebenson

Product Description
In this exclusive 83 minute DVD premiere, featuring brand new, never before seen content, Stewie, the maniacal baby genius, is distracted from his plans for world domination when he sees a man who looks just like him on television. Convinced that this man must be his real father (after all, how could he possibly share genetic material with the dimwitted Peter?), Stewie sets off on a cross-country road trip to find him. But his incredible journey leads him to discoveries far more vile and shocking that anything found in his diaper.

Unfortunately..........2007-08-15
It is 3 episodes put together faking to be like a movie, but anyways, i thought it was good, but I didn't like once it came in the mail, the cover was different from the picture on here. I wanted the one with Stewie griffin, half his face showing and him saying "NEVER BEFORE SEEN!" but instead I got a boring black cover with the griffin family on it.
For the movie itself, it was funny and awesome, family guy-must see!
i was just disappointed in the cover art and how that picture lied to us all.
Um, yeah..not so much.......2007-07-30
I am a rabid Family Guy fan. I was just like you guys staying up late at night watching Adult Swim watching re-runs and laughing at each joke as if they were new. When I heard the movie was coming come I was one of the first to order. I was completely excited, told all my friends. The movie finally came.
But then I put the DVD in.
Um, yeah..not so much. It was such a disappointment. It's like having two bad Family Guy episodes pasted together, and badly. I couldn't recommend it to anyone, but if you are a rabid fan you already have it anyway.
one of the worst movies ever........2007-07-25
A full length Family Guy movie might sound like a good idea, and definitely a good financial move, considering how popular(and overrated imo) Family Guy is nowadays. But when I saw the results of this idea, I completely realized that Family Guy is not a show to make a feature film out of. Aqua Teen Hunger Force even worked better as a movie than Family Guy did. The whole thing is just 3 modern episodes tied together. And if you read my other Family Guy review, you'd know that I'm not a fan of alot of recent Family guy episodes. And many of the great flaws and negativities of recent episodes are all present in this movie. And even worse, I did not laugh even once throughout the whole movie. I laugh occasionally in every new family guy episode, but not once in this whole movie did I laugh.
I got fooled. Content new at release time, but is a 'rerun' now.......2007-07-10
I am glad this was paid for by a gift certificate. That way I don't feel as foolish for spending money on something that has been shown on TV. This was released during a time when no new Family Guy was being shown on TV. Once it returned to TV, these episodes were aired.
Buy this if you like to 'own' what you see on TV.
I must admit, it is fun to watch them with the 'adult' language soundtrack. Cartoons that swear are worth a giggle. Don't worry, they do not swear a lot.
Funny and Kool.......2007-07-06
This movie is hilarious its like as funny as the show itself like stewie goes back into time and sees he becomes a 35 year old virgin because he tried to kill a little boy by the swimming pool that 1 day.

Joseph Mankiewicz's moody classic is less ghost story than romantic fantasy, a handsome 1947 drama of impossible love set on the picturesque turn-of-the-century New England coast. Independent young widow Lucy Muir (the luminous Gene Tierney), desperate to escape her uptight in-laws, falls in love with a grand seaside house and moves in, only to discover the cantankerous ghost of the hot-tempered Captain Gregg (a histrionically flamboyant performance by Rex Harrison). Lucy refuses to let the bombastic captain frighten her away, earning his respect, his friendship, and later his love. They team up to turn the captain's salty memoirs into a bestseller, but as his affection grows he fades away, leaving Lucy free to undertake a more worldly suitor, notably a charismatic children's author (George Sanders at his smarmy smoothest) with his own guarded secret. Charles Lang's melancholy black-and-white photography and Bernard Herrmann's haunting score set the tone for this sublime adult drama, and Tierney delivers one of her most understated performances as the resolute Mrs. Muir. Mankiewicz turns this ghost story into a refreshingly mature and down-to-earth romance. --Sean Axmaker
Description
A romance between a young widow and a sea captain's ghost weaves a magical tale of immortal love. Determined to live her life the way she wants, newly widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) declines her straitlaced in-laws demand that she live with them and moves with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood) to the seaside into a cottage haunted by the handsome, blustering Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison). A deal is struck between the two in the wee hours of the morning allowing Lucy to stay in the house and the captain to materalize only in the master bedroom. As they gradually get to know each other better, Lucy's spunk and stubborness gains first the captain's grudging respect, then his heart. But when another man woos Lucy, both must face that her future lies with the living, not in the spirit world.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful romantic fantasy about an impossible romance..........2007-09-08
Gene Tierney is an impoverished widow who manages to find a suitable seaside cottage for herself, her maid and her daughter (Natalie Wood), only to discover that its former occupant is a strong-willed, salty sea captain (Rex Harrison) who is opposed to anyone else living at Gull Cottage. How their relationship grows and changes is the basis for the rest of the fantasy.
Tierney has her best role since 'Laura' as the lovely widow, engaging in many witty dialogs with Harrison's ghost with their relationship ultimately leading to a wistful ending. The mood of the period fantasy is enhanced by Bernard Herrmann's exquisitely sensitive score, capturing the atmosphere of the seaside cottage at the edge of a cliff. George Sanders has an amusing role as a man who almost convinces the widow that he's not a married man. Touches of humor abound in early scenes of Tierney with her relatives who are opposed to her independent decision to find her own lodgings.
Later remade as a TV series in the '60s which never captured the charm of the original story filmed with such tender care by director Joseph L. Mankiewicz from a screenplay by Philip Dunne. A delightful movie that will remain fresh and young forever.
Ghost and Mrs. Muir.......2007-08-24
A classic. Quality is very good. Glad to have some 'oldies' available on DVD.
Oh bliss!.......2007-08-14
Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison make this move a wonderful, and memorable film. With quality scripting, cinematography and soundtrack, it allows one to forget that other version of this wonderful movie. Why remake such a wonderful version, with such quality actors? The extras were great, and I never new Rex Harrison was such a complex character (and not nearly so succesful as we think now). If you love good stories, and wonderful cinema, this is a movie for you.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.......2007-08-13
This film's stars, Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, share a wonderful onscreen chemistry, and the "ghost story" is simply enchanting.
DVD REVIEW.......2007-08-07
DvD in perfect condition. Sound was good. Very good family oriented ghost movie.

Fox finally sees the light.......2007-09-16
I first saw 'With a Song in My Heart' 33 years ago at the tender age of 14. For me, it was a life-changing experience. I discovered a voice which to me is the most beautiful and perfect voice in the history of popular music. The voice belonged to Jane Froman, whose story is told in the movie. The movie has it all: drama, humor, big production numbers and above all a great selection of songs sung superbly on the soundtrack by Jane Froman. It makes you laugh and shed a tear or two and the music sets your feet tapping. Susan Hayward gives a gutsy performance in the title role and Thelma Ritter almost steals the show.We Froman fans have waited a long time for this DVD. Thank you Fox. It was worth the wait. For those people who have never seen the movie, you are in for the time of your life. It will both move and entertain you and, like the song, it will stay in your heart.
I NOW HAVE A SONG IN MY HEART.......2007-09-13
This movie has never been released in ANY format so this is a cause for celbration for this highly sought after flick. Many fine reviews have already preceded mine (considering it is not yet available) so I will not rehash the plot but give what I hope will be interesting insights into the making of this fine film.
Susan during her contract with FOX were her most visible superstardom years and it has always struck me a bit odd very little has been released by the studio considering a quarter of their budget was wrapped up in her movies alone. She was the only star at Grauman's to place her hands, footprints and signature in cement embedded in gold dust. Hayward's famous long red tresses were insured for a million dollars and could only be trimmed a half inch. She was allowed to have it cut shoulder length since she bore some resemblence to Jane Froman. She spent hours in the recording booth watching Froman sing the songs used on the soundtrack, noting her every gesture and movement which explains why her lip syncing job is one of the best on celluloid. Her lavish wardrobe was not for glamor but character, as Froman was voted consistently as one of the top 10 best dressed women of her time. Her elabrote dance routines took weeks of rehearsal and during one shot, her breast was flashed during a daily rush and and had to be reshot. A young Bob Wagner credits his success to Hayward for taking him under her wing. This was his first major film albeit a small part and he had to cry in one scene while Hayward was singing which he found difficult to execute. Hayward deliberately had the camers focused on the back of her head during the scene as she prompted him to tears. In the 70's he remarked on THE TONIGHT SHOW what a tremendous help she was to a young struggling actor. Susan was not one for making friends with her peers; however, the acerbic Thelma Ritter as her nurse and companion became life-long friends. Ritter who as also nominated for an oscar should have won. She was overlooked by the Academy 6 times and never received an award of any type. Poor judgement indeed.
Susan made many top money making films for Fox and few have been released and this is her only Oscar nod during her tenure with the company. She was cast in big budget movies and given interesting scenes to appeal to her creative talents and despite the overblown budgets, she always managed to bring a close intimacy to the moviegoing public. The next year after SONG she was given her best and most overlooked role as the maligned Rachel Jackeson in THE PRESIDENT'S LADY co-starring a fairly junior Charleton Heston. He was one of her better male leads as their chemistry on screen crackled with electricity.
This grand scale musical was the biggest moneymaker in it's category for 1952. And it's a long time coming. This one woman show leans towards sentimentality at times, but Hayward never allows it to become maudlin. Under her cabable hands she has managed to give one of the finest musical performances in film history.
This is a classic movie for everyone in the family to enjoy. Sit back and watch a real pro at work here. She is that rare combination of beauty and talent that is seldom found in Hollywood.
A one of a kind movie with a one of a kind actress--the great Susan Hayward.
At Long Last!!.......2007-09-08
At long last after 50 years my favorite movie with Susan Hayward is going to be released on DVD. I can hardly wait to receive my copy. I was around 10 years old when my older sister took me to see this movie. I fell in love with Susan after this. The movie itself if one of the best musical's of all time. In 1952 at the Academy Awards, Susan was up for Best Actress including four other nominations including Best Musical Score which was won by Alfred Newman. The film even beat out "Singing in the Rain" that year. Susan and the wonderful Jane Froman worked closely together on the set and Susan herself took dancing lessons. The wardrobe for the movie was very expensive
Susan wore forty-two different outfits all designed by costume designer Charles Le Maire for which he was nominated. Susan's wardrobe had to uphold Froman's tradition as one of the "Ten Best Dressed Women in America" Susan was considered as 20th Century Fox top female performer of her time and a huge asset to the studio. When you see this film, you will know why!!
FINALLY! The Best Musical Bio Is Coming!.......2007-09-01
Without a doubt, this is the best musical biography ever made! Susan Hayward worked closely with Jane Froman, studying her gestures, delivery, and style. The two became close friends in the course of the project. The result is a seamless lip-synching of songs by Hayward over the most perfect mezzo voice of Ms. Froman. (The voice is an instrument with perfect vibrato.)
Thelma Ritter was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress and delivers a tremendous performance as Nurse Clancey. She was a very special actress!
The combination of songs from a variety of composers is stellar. The dance production for "With a Song in My Heart" is gorgeous and simply soars! The strings are marvelous, and the male dance lead is brilliant.
I thought I was destined to enjoy this classic only on a grainy VHS recording made from a TV broadcast. Thank goodness for a restored DVD! I can hardly wait for my copy to arrive. Then I, too, will have a song in MY heart!
A voice unlike any other!.......2007-08-24
Upon first seeing this movie as an early teenager, I knew there was something unique about Jane Froman's voice. Over the years, I've come to believe that her courage in dealing with incredible obstacles and pain is what I hear in that voice!
It was exciting to see this movie again on cable about 20 years ago and now after more that 50 years, we will be able to own it and watch it anytime. It is being released for what would have been Jane Froman's 100th birthday, which will be celebrated by her fans in Columbia, Missouri, November 9-11, 2007.

Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd, Horatio Hornblower) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help from former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon, Nip/Tuck) in order to pursue outer-space research into human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis, The Shield); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba, Dark Angel, Sin City), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans, Cellular). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.
Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book cocreator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi! I>

Customer Reviews:
awful.......2007-09-15
This movie highly disappointed me. The second one was a lot better. This movie had dumb jokes thrown in and a lot of stupid lines. The visual affects were pretty good which made me give this 2 stars. Worth a rent, that's all.
FANTASTIC FILM!.......2007-09-01
I'll admit that when I first watched this movie, I was rather sceptical and even somewhat cynical. I'd heard a lot of the rumblings that it wasn't "epic" enough and that they'd made too many changes, etc. However, when I sat down to watch this, it really won me over. Sure it's not the big action/effects blockbuster that it could have been, but that is really where it succeeds. If it had been made in that way, it would've been a lesser film. Allow me to explain. This film really captures the characters (their personalities, quirks and tensions) remarkably well. The emphasis IS on the characters. Not the effects or the action or the spectacle. THE CHARACTERS. The casting here is near-perfect. Jessica Alba probably isn't the right choice for the role, however, that said, she really does radiate a definite charm that won me over. Plus, Reed may not have noticed it (or at least he wasn't admitting it), she does look HOT in that outfit! Julian McMahon makes Doom his own, which more than makes up for the changes they made to his character. Michael Chiklis is perfect as Ben. But the real casting coup here, in my opinion, is Ioan Gruffudd. He is nothing short of perfect as Reed. Intelligent without being boring, confident enough to really convince as team leader. Tim Story really deserves way more credit than he received for making such a fine film. Pure entertainment from start to finish. And you can't ask for more than that.
And to all those who dismiss this DVD version of FF, both the JACK KIRBY: STORYTELLER and THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE documentaries are worth it alone to buy this version. They are hands down some of the best documentaries I have seen regarding comics.
If you have any doubts whatsoever about whether it is worth the cost, please let me persuade you to buy it and buy it now! You won't be sorry!
A good example of poor editing.......2007-08-14
The Fantastic Four Extended Cut is a good example of how not to edit a movie. Many of the scenes put back in are either completely unnecessary, repetitive, or just plain silly (such as the Wolverine impersonation scene which is all three). As a result, the middle section of the movie now seriously drags. I think I prefer the original edit to this version, though there were several positive additions (sadly ruined but those that were not).
My recommendation would be that if you already have the original don't bother with this one. If you don't have the original, get this version because the original edit is on it too so you can have both versions, and if you enjoy special features there's a second disc full of them.
Lame.......2007-08-11
The story of 4 astronauts who get caught in a solar storm and survive, but with their DNA severely altered. They develop superpowers and become the Fantastic Four. I didn't read the comic books so I don't care how it stacks up to them. The movie taken by itself is pretty bad. There is very little set-up to explain who everyone is and what exactly they're doing in space. In fact, throughout the entire movie there is little character development. The only person who actually acts in the film is Michael Chiklis as The Thing. Everyone else give awful performances, especially Jessica Alba. They're not helped by the atrocious dialog they have to say. The script must have taken about 20 minutes to write. I gave it 2 stars because I've seen worse movies and there are a few good effects sequences, especially at the end.
MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax . com Is Here!.......2007-08-09
Most film adaptations of comic books skimp on the amount of fantastic-ness, offering at best one or perhaps two units of fantastic-osity. Not Fantastic Four! It goes the extra mile by providing THREE (3) fantastic characters (plus a bonus character who's not so much fantastic as he is a fantastic irritant, in the spirit of battery acid on the skin or airplane glue in the eyes.) Plus, Fantastic Four gives you a villain who looks and acts as though he were carved out of large log of congealed tallow! And while other movies might cast Jessica Alba in a lead role and then task her with giving a performance, Fantastic Four plays to her strengths by avoiding any performance at all and instead merely parades her around in a tighter-than-skin Spandex suit.
Featuring eye-popping special effects and a collection of words written down and then spoken by the actors (it would be a wild exaggeration to refer to it as a "script"), Fantastic Four gets a fantastic four star rating* from Mike and expert riffer Kevin Murphy.
*Out of ten possible.

The Story of Ruth.......2007-08-10
Ketuvim "Writings" (Book: Ruth [Rut in Hebrew])
This movie has taken license in adding to the actual storyline of Ruth. An examples are; When the two Moabs claim to be kinsmen from the tribe of Reuben, or when she is married to Mahlon (her first husband) for a brief moment prior to his death, etc. The movie is well put together, but it does stray a bit from the actual writings. [see Ruth 1:16-17]
Good movie. I would recomment it.
A great woman.......2007-08-04
The story of Ruth is a great story, her journey of love and loss, Her love for her mother in law- Naomi who mentor's her into her journey to greatness.

Melanie Griffith had a fling with stardom in this Mike Nichols comedy about an executive secretary (Griffith) who can't get her deserved shot at upward mobility in the brokerage industry. Hardly taken seriously by male bosses, things aren't really any better for her once she starts working for a female exec (Sigourney Weaver, never more delightful), a narcissist with a boy-toy banker (Harrison Ford) and a tendency to steal the best ideas from her underlings. When Weaver's character is laid up with a broken leg, Griffith poses as a replacement wheeler-dealer, flirting with Ford and working on a new client who doesn't suspect the deception. Nichols brings a lot of snap and sass to Kevin Wade's smart script about chafing against class restrictions and perceptions. Sundry scenes are played quite charmingly, especially those of Griffith and Ford's mutual pickup in a bar and Joan Cusack's championing of Griffith's crusade. Nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Griffith), and two Supporting Actress awards (Weaver, Cusack); Carly Simon's song "Let the River Run" won the Oscar. --Tom Keogh
Description
Nominated for 6 Academy Awards; director Mike Nichols' witty, romantic look at life in the corporate jungle stars Melanie Griffith as Tess McGill, an ambitious secretary with a unique approach for climbing the ladder to success. When her classy, but villainous boss (Sigourneey Weaver) Breaks a leg skiing, Tess simply takes over her office, her apartment, even her wardrobe. She then creates a deal with a handsome investment banker (Harrison Ford) that will either take her straight to the top - or finish her off for good.

the good "gal" wins .......2007-05-26
this is a movie for a dank night, when you're feeling down about your job, employer, or simply at things you can't control.
Delight in a farfetched but very well written and acted plot, where the "bad" witch is a successful woman, the heroine is a feisty and spunky smartass who knows what she needs to do to succeed but lacks the credentials to get there, and Harrison Ford being his romantic lead best.
Good wins over evil, the right woman wins the guy of many of our dreams, and perhaps best yet...woman are equal to men in the power plays of business. Its worth watching again and again!
Smashing the Glass Ceiling.......2007-03-21
What I love about Mike Nichols' Working Girl, each time that I view the DVD, is that the film reminds me of the Cinderella fairytale re-envisioned as a corporate fable. While there are no evil stepmoms and stepsisters here, Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) finds herself in just as miserable a situation, with a conniving boss (portrayed by a perfectly lanky Sigourney Weaver) and a duplicitous boyfriend (portrayed with an adequate balance of arrogance and warmth by Alec Baldwin).
Instead of a glass slipper, Tess slips into a little black dress with plenty of persuasion by her fairy godmother, Cynthia (played by John's big sister, Joan Cusack). The dress and the hair are key to hooking the corporate Prince (portrayed by a dapper Harrison Ford). It is the larger-than-life Cusack as "Cyn" -- Tess' nickname for her best friend from their Staten Island 'hood -- who rules in Working Girl.
Best Supporting Actress Cusack steals more than one scene, such as the one in which she reacts to an expensive dress from the wardrobe of Tess' boss with the line: "It's not even leather," the last word emphatically pronounced "LEH-thuh" as if the price tag on the dress were a working-class faux pas. In that scene, Griffith as Tess nearly faints. Brilliant!
However, Tess delivers my most favorite line in the movie, in a scene with Harrison Ford's character, Jack Trainor: "I've got a head for business and a bod for sin." I must admit that it's not only what she says in that scene, but also how she says it. Griffith and Ford's chemistry is as electric in Working Girl as that of Bogie and Bergman or Grant and (Audrey) Hepburn in their own Hollywood classics.
If you buy this DVD, it certainly will not disappoint.
Working Girl, dvd.......2007-01-04
This is the story of an employee who is kept at the bottom of the corporate chain, as a secretary. Her ideas are taken by her boss, and passed off as her own. The secretary steps outside her group and runs an idea. Sigourney Weaver is good as the villainous squelcher. Melanie Griffith is good as the "take this job and shove it" secretary. Harrison Ford is always good as the romantic interest, of both women. Retribution is swift, but honesty conquers in the end.
4 stars for this fun and witty comedy.......2006-12-28
I had recently heard about this movie in the film "Little Black Book." I personally think that this is a fun, and very enjoyable comedy. It is about this secretery named Tess, who gets a job for this very important, big, and rich business woman named Katharine. After throwing an idea to Katharine to help the business, her boss steals her idea and takes credit for it. Left heartbroken and sad, she poses as Katharine after she is injured on vacation. She then works with and falls in love with Harrison Ford's character. The DVD features include two theatrical trailers, three televison spots, and theatrical trailers for other 20th Century Fox movies. Not too great of a DVD, but well worth the price, only $9.99, at most places
Great Story.......2006-10-28
I was on the edge of my seat - WILLING Melanie Griffith's character to MAKE IT in the business world. She was smart, pretty, and hard-working. She deserved a break.
Will she get it? Watch and see.

The definitive screen adaptation of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, the 1961 production of The Innocents remains one of the most effective ghost stories ever filmed. Originally promoted as the first truly "adult" chiller of the big screen (a marginally valid claim considering the release of Psycho a year earlier), the film arrived at a time when the thematic depth of James's story could finally be addressed without the compromise of reductive discretion. And while the Freudian anxiety that fuels the story may seem tame by today's standards, the psychological horrors that comprise the story's "dark secret" are given full expression in a film that brilliantly clouds the boundary between tragic reality and frightful imagination.
In one of her finest performances, Deborah Kerr stars as Miss Giddons, a devout and somewhat repressed spinster who happily accepts the position of governess for two orphaned children whose uncle (Michael Redgrave) readily admits to having no interest in being tied down by two "brats." So Miss Giddons is dispatched to Bly House, the lavish, shadowy estate where young Flora (Pamela Franklin) and her brother Miles (Martin Stephens, so memorable in 1960's Village of the Damned) live with a good-natured housekeeper (Megs Jenkins). At first, life at Bly House seems splendidly idyllic, but as Miss Giddons learns the horrible truth about the estate's now-deceased groundskeeper and previous governess, she begins to suspect that her young charges are ensnared in a devious plot from beyond the grave.
Ghostly images are revealed in only the most fleeting glimpses, and the outstanding Cinemascope photography by Freddie Francis (who used special filters to subtly darken the edges of the screen) turns Bly House into a welcoming mansion by day, a maze of mystery and terror by night. Sound effects and music are used to bone-chilling effect, and director Jack Clayton, blessed with a script by William Archibald and Truman Capote, maintains a deliberate pace to emphasize the ambiguity of James's timeless novella. The result is a masterful film--comparable to the 1963 classic The Haunting--that uses subtlety and suggestion to reach the pinnacle of fear. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Deborah Kerr stars in this "horrifying Gothic ghost tale" (Newsweek) based on Henry James' "The Turn Of The Screw,' a powerful psychological drama about innocence possessed by evil. Shortly after coming to live with orphans Flora and Miles in their dark, eerie mansion, the new governess (Kerr) mistakes their strange behavior for preciousness. But she soon comes to believe that the charming, beautiful children are possessed by evil, malicious spirits - the souls of their previous governess and estate manager who are now dead. With its shocking conclusion and sinister cinematic effects. The Innocents "catches an eerie, spine-chilling mood right from the start" (Variety) that never lets up.
Customer Reviews:
You Must Be A Fan.......2007-09-10
I am afraid I'm either selling or donating my DVD. Although I enjoy old horror movies, I found myself dozing on this one. The big Victorian house used is an excellent setting. There are definitely some great scenes too and Deborah Kerr and the children are excellent in their roles. But there are also some sections of the movie that drag a bit and probably should have ended up on the cutting room floor. So I highly recommend you rent this before purchasing it. I wish I had instead of trusting the high praise reviews here so I wouldn't be donating a movie instead of returning it to Netflix. By the way, my wife felt the same as me about the movie so it isn't just my perspective.
Excellent Adaptation of THE TURN OF THE SCREW.......2007-09-08
I'm very familiar with the Henry James novella THE TURN OF THE SCREW from which this film is quite closely adapted so I didn't think the filmmakers could make my spine tingle or give me any goose flesh! I was wrong as this movie creates such an atmosphere of horror that I was on the edge of my seat throughout my viewing even though I knew full well where the storyline was taking me. The film is perfectly cast particularly in regard to the children who play Miles and Flora. Deborah Kerr is perhaps quite a bit older than the young governess James wrote about but her restrained proper prettiness is perfect for the role. Michael Redgrave has a brief part at the beginning as the children's charming, selfish uncle and one has to wonder if guilt and/or fear instead of just pure self-indulgence make him so eager to completely give up responsibility for his niece, nephew and his family's incredible estate, Bly. The magnificent house and grounds of Bly are almost another character with the estate's vastness and beautiful statue laden grounds used to spooky effect throughout the movie. We, of course, just get glimpses of the actors playing Miss Jessell and Peter Quint but their appearances are so perfectly presented that in each of these glimpses I felt a chill down my spine. The sound design is superb as bird calls, the squeak of chalk, children's laughter and disembodied voices enhance the mood and the music box song Flora sings and dances with is truly haunting. Like the novella the movie is very ambiguous as to whether this is a ghost story, a tale of possession or simply a portrait of a repressed woman psychologically unraveling. Worth watching more than once to catch all the subtle sights and sounds of horror as well as to help clarify your view of what this story is really all about.
Is She just insane...........2007-09-04
Well is the Governess insane or are the children dealing with the occult?A newly assigned Governess must go to a distant lonely mansion to care for two bastard children. With only a maid at her side she must unravel the children's fears and sinister games and bring them to some sort of redemption. At times Deborah Kerr leaves you wondering if she was not the person in need of mental health and soul searching redemption here.Wonderful performances by the children, the screaming girl, after she was driven to a point of madness;the little boy,too grown up and dark for his age.Suspense and psychological issues abound. With a pacing of story that keeps you guessing. What happens to victims of trauma and dementia.
The Innocents.......2007-06-28
Expertly directed by Jack Clayton and shot by the legendary Freddie Francis, this chilling horror tale uses muffled sounds and fleeting glimpses to cast its spell of dread and mounting terror. Kerr is terrific in the lead, a woman who must determine whether she's being haunted or going mad, and Martin Stephens and Pamela Franklin are appropriately remote as the two possessed children. Also look for Michael Redgrave as the children's aloof uncle (whatever his faults, he's wise enough to stay away). Fans of psychological horror should pounce.
