The second installment of John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy (which also includes Fort Apache and Rio Grande), this meditative Western continues the director's fascination with history's obliteration of the past. It features one of John Wayne's more sensitive performances as Capt. Nathan Brittles, a stern yet sentimental war horse who has difficulty preparing for his impending military retirement. All things considered, he refuses to leave before fulfilling his obligation to the local Indian tribe. It's a film about honor and duty as well as loneliness and mortality. And Oscar-winner Winton C. Hoch beautifully photographs it in Remington-like Technicolor tones (you've never seen such stunning cloud-covered skies). The combination of melancholy and farce (Victor McLaglen makes a perfect court jester) evokes comparisons to Shakespeare. Best of all, the scene in which Wayne fights back tears when receiving a gold watch from his troops is unforgettably bittersweet. If you view the whole trilogy, it actually makes sense to save this for last. --Bill Desowitz
Description
A masterpiece of mood and heroics, this second film in director John Ford's renowned cavalry trilogy (Fort Apache and Rio Grande are the others) features one of John Wayne's most moving performances as a cavalry officer in his final week of service on the frontier. Under makeup aging him some 20 years, he inhabits the role of a wily veteran who knows the sting of war and vows to make his last mission one of peace. The ritual of outpost life, the sweep of battle, the advance of the patrol beneath ominous skies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, an Academy Award winner* for its color cinematography, paints a memorable portrait of the honor, duty and courage in the finest tradition of the cavalry. And of Ford filmmaking.

SHe Wore a Yellow Ribbon.......2007-08-24
This is a John Wayne classic and easily one of his best westerns and more especially one of his best movies period. The restoration on this DVD is absolutely fantastic. I couldn't find a blemish anywhere. Any real John Wayne collection CANNOT be complete without this DVD version of the film.
My Dad Love's the movie.......2007-07-26
I ordered this movie for my Dad and he has already watched it 5 times.
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON.......2007-07-13
IF YOU LIKE JOHN WAYNE, YOU'LL LIKE THIS MOVIE. IT'S ONE OF HIS EARLIEST COLOR MOVIE AND DIRECTED BY JOHN FORD. JOHN WAYNE PLAYS A CAVALRY CAPTAIN ABOUT TO RETIRE. YES, HE FIGHTS INDIANS AND GUN RUNNERS, BUT THE FILM IS WELL MADE AND I REALLY LIKE IT. IT LOOKS AS IF A GREAT DEAL IS FILMED IN MONUMENT VALLEY ON THE NAVAJO RESERVATION IN ARIZONA.
John Wayne at his sentimental best.......2007-07-13
This is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. It precedes The Quiet Man by 3 years. The last time I watched it commercial free thanks to Netflix, it was interesting to count all the actors and actresses in both pictures. Familiar faces on screen is true of many of John Wayne's movies and is just one many reasons why they are just about all fun to watch.
Too bad they no longer make em like this!
MY FAVORITE JOHN WAYNE FILM.......2007-07-04
Although Red River, The Searchers, and possibly True Grit and The Shootist might arguably contain better acting performances from the Duke, this film is my favorite. Everything works in this film, and works well. John Ford loved the U.S. Cavalry, as can be clearly seen in the trilogy, and also in the Civil War film, The Horse Soldiers. While I love all the aforementioned films, this one is the one where everything worked perfectly. The contrast of Wayne's seasoned Capt. Brittles with the two younger officers, the lonely life Brittles lives with no wife or family vs. the younger men competing for the hand of lovely Joanne Dru, the comedy relief provided by the incomparable Victor McLaglen, the savvy wisdom of(former confederate captain) Sgt. Tyree, nothing is missing. This was John Ford's stock company at it's best, with perhaps only The Searchers to compare. The passing years only make me love this film more. everyone was at the absolute top of their game for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. See it soon!!!

Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.
In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Lawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.
Customer Reviews:
Pioneering Eastern USA.......2007-09-11
This movie endures well, partly because it is historical, and therefore not subject to obsolescence, other than technical obsolescence - due to changes in filming techniques. These are not significant.
In its day, "Drums Along the Mohawk" was Academy Award material. Perhaps it would still be so.
I get caught in the drama, the danger, the excitement and the unbelievable hardships of the pioneers, especially the women. This movie tends to bring out all of those aspects of pioneer life, and because I am drawn in, I get a strong feeling of participation, even though I am sure I don't have the heart to be a true pioneer.
Good Movie This!!!.......2007-09-07
Educational, exciting, this one has it all!! Classic Henry Fonda, good supporting actors, lots of action...there was no FEMA to pull your fat out of the fire, this is a movie about self-reliance, hard work, and the will to live in the New World. Well done!
Lovin Henry Fonda.......2007-08-23
Well, being a great fan of Mr.Fonda since I was very young, it was great to get one of his older movies to watch on DVD.
Drums is a typically well done John Ford story with all the story sidebars and characters you can later regognize as the Ford "people", even a rather young Ward Bond.
This movie was based on a book of the same title, and is good enough to make you want to read the book, just like the movie versoin of "The Grapes of Wrath" does.
Neglected gem!...one of John Ford's finest films..........2007-08-05
1939 was a banner year for great films--and certainly one of them was "Drums Along the Mohawk" in gorgeous early technicolor about a period in history not often used as the subject of a major film. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert are fine as a young couple in the years before the Revolutionary War settling in the backwoods of New York state. The hardships of pioneer life are made even tougher by the presence of Indians on the warpath, the only refuge being a nearby fort where men, women and children find some protection.
Brilliantly photographed with lots of action scenes that bring the film vividly to life under John Ford's direction. John Carradine makes an excellent villain and Edna May Oliver gives another one of her priceless performances as an elderly widow who forms a strong attachment to the young couple. An unforgettable scene has Indians raiding her home while she refuses to budge from her bed even though they set fire to it. Scenes of Indian cruelty and torture are also present--but altogether a moving film well worth viewing to see what frontier life must have been like way back then.
Sentimental at times--but also harsh and realistic. Most memorable scene: Fonda pursued by Indians for a long chase over woodlands, finally wearing out his pursuers who collapse from sheer exhaustion. Thrilling chase!
A Rare Revolutionary War Classic.......2007-06-09
There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"

One of very few widescreen productions filmed at the dawn of the talkies, The Big Trail was dismissed by reviewers of the day, little seen, and soon shelved and forgotten--for more than half a century, as it turned out. For movie buffs, it became a sort of Holy Grail. After all, the esteemed Raoul Walsh had directed, the early 70mm angle was tantalizing, and wasn't this the movie that was intended to make a star of Duke Morrison, a 22-year-old former prop man whom Walsh had rechristened John Wayne for the occasion? For curiosity value alone, surely it rated a look.
Restored in the late 1980s and warmly embraced by film festival audiences, The Big Trail proved to be more than just a historical footnote. What were those 1930 reviewers thinking?! Wayne is fresh, exuberant, matinee-idol handsome, and irresistibly charming (only a little purple prose trips him up, and no one should have been asked to speak such early-talkie flapdoodle anyway). The scenario winds through epic settings from the banks of the Mississippi by way of the Grand Canyon to the snows of Oregon and the mountain vistas of Washington, marking both a wagon train's journey and the settling of a personal score between trail guide Wayne and Tyrone Power Sr. as a veritable ogre of a villain. (A villain off-camera, too: Legend holds that Walsh had the actor beaten nearly to death for attempting to force himself on leading lady Marguerite Churchill.) The Big Trail is now an authentic classic, and a swell movie. Probably always was. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
In this sweeping pioneer adventure, a courageous young scout (WAYNE) leads hundreds of settlers across treacherous cliffs, though brutal snowstorms, Indian attacks and buffalo stampedes to their destiny out West. Along the way, he loses his heart to a beautiful pioneer woman (MARGUERITE CHURCHILL) and never stops trying to win her love. TYRONE POWER co-stars in this visually spectacular epic.

Still ANOTHER version.......2007-08-08
Just thought I'd add to all the talk of different extant versions of this film. The Key Video VHS from 1988 offers yet ANOTHER incarnation of this film. As opposed to the edited 35mm version on Fox VHS and DVD, the Key version was a pan and scan version of the 70mm film, and ran 121 mins., even though the box listed it as 110.
WIDESCREEN IN NECESSARY ..!!!!!.......2007-06-20
This is an historical film that was made in 70mm widescreen and it MUST be shown that way!! What a travesty to show this in 1:33 square format!! History deserves better and so do we film buffs!!!
Great beginning.......2007-03-27
I had a copy of this movie several years ago and lost it. I found it on Amazon and was very happy. I liked John Wayne when I was growing up (he was my hero then). I think that this movie showed what talent Mr. Wayne had. (even though he was twenty at this time). This will be a great addition to my ever growing collection of John Wayne movies.
What a great Western!!!.......2006-12-17
I confess that I did not purchase this video; however, I did watch this movie today on TV. It is a wonderful Western, full of charm, a little corniness, some great humorous scenes, as well as a realistic-looking tale of pioneers crossing the wide-open country through the wild, Indian-settled plains, to a glorious new life in the American Northwest. It is interesting to see John Wayne already taking the moral high ground in several scenes throughout this early movie from 1930, much as he did the rest of his movie career. The long straight-on shot of pretty Marguerite Churchill leaning out the back of her conestoga wagon with a glimpse of cleavage is quite risque for 1930, though maybe not surprising just coming out of the "Roaring Twenties." The scenery is awesome, even in black & white, and the sub-plots are set-up quickly and perfectly early in the film. The scene of lowering people, cattle, and conestoga wagons down the cliff by ropes is a little unbelieveable, but who knows! Some of the scenes like the wagon swept away in the river with paniced women and children being rescued, and the wagon that fell down the cliff look like they were possibly not staged, but the footage was well incorporated into the movie. (It would be interesting to know whether or not these scenes were staged.) This is a hidden gem, not only for John Wayne fans, but for all fans of Westerns!
Boo for this edited version.......2006-12-12
John Wayne's first important screen appearance, this Raoul Walsh picture about a wagon train crossing the plains is quite a major production for its day. Much longer than most pictures of the time (though for some unknown reason shortened by 20 minutes on this DVD release, an unfortunate decision disparaged by other reviewers here), the movie tells a vivid story with the camera. There isn't much plot, but various incidents - a buffalo hunt, an Indian attack, a near-disastrous crossing of a rain-swollen stream - are all captured wonderfully on film. Unfortunately, the spotlight that shined so brightly on Wayne here flicked out after the picture was released, and he would be relegated to churning out numerous quick oaters and action flicks for the next nine years before getting another big break in STAGECOACH. Maybe Fox or somebody will do this picture the justice it deserves and put the whole thing out on DVD so we can get rid of this edited version once and for all.

Pretty good Kirk Douglas western. .......2005-06-16
CONTAINS SPOILERS
"The Big Trees" is a western mystery starring Kirk Douglas and Edgar Buchanan. It concerns conflicts between two warring factions: the environmentalists and the conservationsist profiteers. Kirk Douglas plays a mine leader who's objective is to make use of California's Redwood Trees for his company's profits. A Quaker group attempts to prevent these trees from being destroyed. That is the conflict for half of the movie. However, problems start to get far more complex as the film moves on. The conflicts erupts into full scale when an innocent priest is crushed to death by a falling redwood. Then, members of Kirk Douglas' rival company gun down and murder his pal "Lucky" (Edgar Buchanan) in cold blood. He then ponders over changing his greedy ways. He also battles the bad guys in a climactic showdown and emerges a victorious and reformed man. Overall an action packed and enjoyable film.
It has already been said by another reviewer that there are six DVD versions of the film available. I purchased the Vina Distributor $1.99 disc and found the quality to be adequate. However, I have heard that the Roan Group edition DVD ($14.99) quality is far from impressive. There is no point in spending a fortune on a DVD that is expensive and bad quality. I highly recommend that you search for the inexpensive Vina edition and buy that. Happy viewing!
Just fun to watch.......2005-01-11
No, this film wasn't a masterpiece, but there weren't a lot of films made in 1952 that *were* masterpieces by most standards. This struck me as a standard sort of western for those days, and it was fine in that context. I like Kirk Douglas and this was a Kirk Douglas film, and I like Edgar Buchanan as well. Was it predictable? Sure. No one really thinks Kirk Douglas will *stay* bad, does he? Were there any intriguing plot twists? No, but enough minor ones to keep me interested. But enjoyed it, and that's all I wanted from it. The one thing I don't understand is why there have been six releases of this on DVD.
Where's my chainsaw?.......2004-08-20
As other reviewers have pointed out, "The Big Trees" is no masterpiece. Some elements of "Angel & the Badman" are there, like a bad guy being reformed by an inocent Quaker girl, but this "tree-hugging hippie crap"(as Eric Cartman would say) just never connects with the audience (unless you're stoned). Forget the dvd cover with Kirk Douglas, the real star is the trees. Before I bought this movie I read about the plot but figured surely it was worth the low cost. Well, I have mixed feelings about it. The movie was pretty horrible, but I had a lot of fun watching it with my family because we took turns making fun of the cheesy dialogue! In my opinion Kirk Douglas never gave a bad performance & he's the only reason I gave this 2 stars. I guess he was desperate for money at the time. Overall, I think this is a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon with your friends, just for the unintentional humor of the whole movie!
You like me, don't you?.......2004-06-01
THE BIG TREES starts out with a great deal of promise - Kirk Douglas stars as Jim Fallon, a Wisconsin timber baron who plans to take advantage of a new law that will allow him to `harvest' California's giant sequoias and make a fortune in the process.
The movie opens in Wisconsin where Fallon is facing down a growling work crew. The pay is late, again, and the men have just about had it. Drawing on his deep well of nerve and blarney and charm, as well as a well-timed gunshot from soon-to-be sidekick `Yukon' Burns (Edgar Buchanan), Fallon not only avoids a bloody mutiny but he even manages to talk the crew into migrating to California where, seemingly, money does indeed grow on trees.
So far so good. THE BIG TREES might be a cut above. The first scene in California (the movie was filmed in Orlick) has Fallon and Yukon measuring the diameter of a giant redwood. It measures out at twenty-eight feet, and the scene is only slightly jarred by the shadow of the camera and boom during this attractive tracking shot.
The hitch in Fallon's plans take the form of Friends, or Quakers, who regard the ancient redwoods as sacred objects. They hold their religious services outdoors, nestled in this majestic sequoia cathedral. Nestled in the bosom of the Quaker community is the beautiful Alicia Chadwick (Eve Miller) (the dvd biography on Miller tells us she was a Playmate of the Month a couple years after THE BIG TREES was released.)
Love trumps Greed and, the last time I looked, Beauty is batting 1.000 against the Beast. Fallon doesn't stand a chance, but before this movie loses all momentum and devolves into a group tree-hug a second group of lumber hungry sociopaths make their presence felt.
It's about then that THE BIG TREES took a big turn and morphed into a Starched Shirt western. Characters chop down trees and wrestle the bad guy on a shaky rope bridge spanning a deep gorge and then show up in the next scene in a spotlessly clean starched shirt. The last half of this movie is corny and formulaic, and betrays the promising start.
Still and all THE BIG TREES is entertaining, well-acted, and good looking.
Action and Romance Among The Redwoods..........2004-03-22
The Big Trees"(1952), Stars Kirk Douglas, as a lumberman intent on claiming ownership and cutting down the beautiful Redwood trees in Northern, California. His oppostion are a group of Quakers who feel that God gave them those trees for their church and do everything in their power to protect the trees from the money hungry businessman! The most outspoken of the group is of course a beautiful woman(Eve Miller), that Douglas falls for, and must decide between the trees and her. Also look for notables Edgar Buchanan as "Yukon", Allen Hale Jr., and Miss Ellen Corby. This one, by BCI Eclipse looks great on the DVD. The original technicolor is beautiful, the picture is clear and the sound quality is very good.
This film is perfect for fans of Kirk Douglas and westerns. You really can't go wrong for the price. And for just a few dollars more, you can also get it in a great set that BCI has put together called "Legends of the West". It's a two disc set with four films(one on each side) and includes this one, the wonderful "One Eyed Jacks" starring Marlon Brando and Karl Malden(also happens to be directed by Brando),"The Sundowners"(1950) with Robert Preston, Robert Sterling and John Barrymore Jr, and "Vegeance Valley" starring Burt Lancaster and Robert Walker.
Happy Trails.....Laurie

A 1939 classic Shirley Temple film about prejudice and the conflict between the workmen building the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Blackfeet Indians, Susannah of the Mounties has been nicely restored in its original black and white format and is also presented in a new, fairly realistically colorized, remastered version. Shirley Temple stars as Susannah Sheldon, a young girl who's orphaned as a result of an Indian attack on her Grandfather's pioneer settlement. Susannah is rescued from the massacre by the kindly Inspector "Monty" Montague (Randolph Scott) of the Northwest Mounted Police. Mr. Monty takes Susannah in and, once she's settled in her temporary home, Susannah quickly develops a crush on Mr. Monty that promises to put her at odds with a beautiful young lady visiting from more civilized lands. While residing with Mr. Monty, Susannah learns a lot about the Indians and their customs thanks to ongoing peace treaty efforts between the officers and the Indians and a budding friendship with Indian Chief Big Eagle's (Maurice Moscovitch) son Little Chief (Martin Good Rider). Dubbed Golden Hawk by her young Indian friend, the spunky and outspoken Susannah becomes the most unlikely of negotiators between the white men and the Indians and proves invaluable to the preservation of peace on the frontier. Violence and fairly mature themes make this film appropriate for ages 10 and older. Bonus features include a "Movietone News" segment with Jimmie Fidler reporting on Carnation Stable's gift of a pony in honor of Shirley Temple's 8th birthday. --Tami Horiuchi
Description
The sole survivor of an Indian attack, little Sue (Temple) is rescued by an officer (Randolph Scott) of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police and becomes deeply attached to him. When he is captured by the same Indians, the courageous youngster realizes it's up to her to same him and bring peace to the land.

Shirley Temple in the Great Northwest........2002-06-07
20th Century Fox tried to rework the plot of "Wee Willie Winkie" in this Shirley Temple flick. One key person missing from the picture was director John Ford. The product suffers without Ford's vision of humor, action, and sentiment. Don't get me wrong. Shirley Temple is still America's Sweetheart. She is the lone survivor of a wagon train massacre, and RCMP Randolph Scott comes to her aid. This time it's American Indians on the warpath. Shirley almost single-handed prevents war on the Canadian frontier, while charming everybody in sight. By 1939, Shirley was starting to show definite signs of growing up, dangerous in a child star. She has a crush on Scott and tries to keep him from mooning around a good-looking woman visiting the outpost. As usual, Shirley's "isn't that cute" antics are amusing. Her culture clashes with the deadpan Indian kid, Little Chief, are comic. There is even some Western style action-adventure. Victor Jory is menacing if somewhat cliched as a villainous Indian. The usual elements just don't jell as well as they did in "Wee Willie Winkie." As wholesome family entertainment, all Shirley Temple films are a success, regardless. This one is pleasant, but not Shirley's best. ;-)
Susannah of the Mounties.......2000-08-24
10-year-old Shirley stars with Randolph Scott in this powerful movie about a young girl, orphaned after a group of Native Americans kill the rest of her wagon train. She is then taken in to live with Randolph Scott at a military base. When a different group of Native Americans want to gain their trust their cheif gives his son to live with them. After learning to cope with the 'little cheif's' behavior, he and shirley become friends and together must save the life of a dear friend. This is not one of Shirley's best films with only one song. She shows her dramatic acting talent and is not always her sweet little self. Don't forget, this 1939 movie was after she was #1 in box office cumes and was only #5, soon to be pushed aff the top 10 list, completely.

Good movie,terrible transfer to DVD.......2002-12-07
Being a George O'Brien fan l immediately jumped at the chance of buying this DVD.Unfortunately the quality (sound and picture)
are terrible. There is so much damage done to this copy, that at
times it is difficult to understand what the actors are saying.
I will never buy a DVD from this company again.Don't waste your money.
Wrong movie!.......1999-03-31
The review you have of the movie Daniel Boone which starred George O'Brien does not match the movie you have for sale. You should correct this - I just received the movie from you as a gift for my father. What a disappointment.

The ritual of outpost life, the sweep of battle, the advance of the patrol beneath ominous skies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, an Academy Award? winner* for its color cinematography, paints a memorable portrait of the honor, duty and courage in the finest tradition of the cavalry.
