4 out of 5 stars Preston, Robin and Bowie.......2007-09-07

TV Guide DVD box sets have very strong audio output and above average picture quality. These packs do tend to be bulky however, with three discs taking up the same shelf space that another manufacturer's 100 movie collections use. (Perhaps an overly critical comment to anyone with plenty of room for a video library.)

    THE PROGRAMS:

SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON, an RCMP non-com along with Yukon King (his German Shepherd) always got their man! Aired Thursdays at 7:30 pm on the CBS-TV network for three seasons, starting in September 1955.

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD was produced in Britain for export to America. This was a children's show broadcast Mondays at 7:30 pm, on the CBS network for four seasons. Robin of Locksley and his Merry Men are charged by King Richard with protecting England while HRM was off fighting the Crusades.

THE ADVENTURES OF JIM BOWIE is a fictionalized account of the Alamo defender's life before he moved to Texas. Bowie encounters many famous men of his era throughout these adventures. Aired on ABC-TV for two seasons, 8 pm Fridays.

TV GUIDE: THE 50's GREATEST SCI-FI SHOWS is another DVD set of early programmimng you're sure to enjoy.

Perhaps an overly critical comment to anyone with plenty of room for a video library.

The three TV westerns here were geared for a younger audience and certainly are the best-known programs of their kind. The half dozen Lone Ranger episodes include that series' first three chapters-- all are from the 1949 premiere season.

Roy Rogers' show ran from 1952 to '57 and was sponsored by POST cereals and JELLO pudding. Each offering was a nice mix of action, comedy and music-- always highly entertaining. Former "Little Rascal" Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer was a regular cast member.

Finally, we have a block of six Cisco Kid half-hours that originally aired sequentially early in its first season. Only episode #1 ("Boomerang") is missing. Cisco and sidekick Pancho roamed the west looking for folks to help. In the process, they got into and out of all sorts of scrapes.

Another box set you're sure to enjoy is TV GUIDE: The 50s GREATEST ADVENTURE SHOWS.
