Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney; she's flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it's the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs' point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake. --Bill Desowitz

101 DALMATIUANS.......2007-07-26
What's there to say? Okay I'll say this.Great family entertainment.
G-rated. Only Disney knew how to please his fans..young & old.Not like today. Some Disney movies are now PG or PG-13.If Disney was alive today...he would not FORSAKE the FAMILY WHOLE! It would be G or nothing at all. There's of course classic Disney movies..like CARS,TOY STORY..all rated G . And they all made $$$ So anyhow..this is pure classic entertainment.
NARICES FRIAS Y CORAZONES CALUROSOS.......2007-07-06
I'll tell you what.......2007-02-17
I have been wanting this cartoon forever in a day. once I recieved it. I played it. back to back as a matter of fact i think i'll go stick it in right now. Hold on a minute.........................There it goes now I'm happy again.

A Really good movie.......2006-05-16
I loved the animated version of 101 Dalmatinas. I would love to get a copy of the script. The live action 101 Dalmatinas movie was OK. But 102 Dalmatinas stinks ! I need a script so I can remake it in live action.

Patch, the TV-obsessed pup of the 1961 animated original, becomes a star in this sequel when he sneaks off to audition for his favorite show, Thunderbolt. Meanwhile, the ego-driven canine star (voiced by Spin City's Barry Bostwick) learns that his character is about to be killed off. His solution? Be a real-life hero. Patch, with his encyclopedic knowledge of Thunderbolt episodes, prowls the streets of London with his idol, making disastrous attempts to rescue unsuspecting citizens. Cruella De Vil returns, on probation for her earlier misdeeds, but still determined to steal the puppies. She springs old cohorts Horace and Jasper from jail and adds artist Lars (Martin Short) to her arsenal. What results is a blend of the animated original's coziness with the live-action version's slapstick, wrapped up with a high-minded ending in which Patch teaches his hero what it means to be genuinely heroic. Awesome! Perhaps better than the original!!.......2006-01-11
Wow! Never thought I'd see a Disney sequel that I enjoyed more than the original! After seeing all the garbage that followed the real classics like "The Rescuers Down Under", "Cinderella II: Dreams Come True" or "The Return of Jafar", it's surprising to come across this jewel among Disney sequels!
It features a unique and inovative plot, something rare in a sequel, but what impressed me the most was that it seemed that the film makers tried hard this time, by making the film seem like the original, with the rough-drawn backgrounds and rough animation. It was an attempt to make a decent and likeable follow up without trying to copy the whole thing (Not like "the Rescuers II" in which not only they tried to turn the whole original into a comedy, but also completely ripped-off the original's storyline, that wasn't the case here.)
So, if you enjoyed 101 Dalmatians, you'll probably enjoy this one just as much, I enjoyed it even more!
Much Better than expected.......2005-07-24
I expected this movie to be a lame sequel, since I really hadn't heard anything about it. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it made me nostalgic about the original which was my favorite movie growing up. I really felt for Patch, who had to deal with being not one of a kind as he liked, but 1 of 101, which is clearly intense competition. He gets himself seperated from the rest of his family and into cahoots with Thunderbird, the "wonder-dog" from his favorite TV show. They both have to find the true hero within and once again save the puppies from the clutches of madwoman Cruella Devil. The original characters all come back, from Pongo and Perdita, Roger and Anita, Cruella and her goons, the feisty nanny and of course the puppies. The new characters blend in perfectly; Lars the artist who paints spots and is quickly discovered by Cruella, and the dogs from the Thunderbird show. The animation was done in a similar fashion as the original, which made it seem more closely linked. In general an enjoyable movie and a stronger urge to own a dalmatian myself. :)
StoryMaker's 101 Dalmatians 2 review.......2005-07-18
NOTE: We watched the VHS, not the DVD, but I couldn't find the VHS version on Amazon.com. ANYWAYS: 101 Dalmatians 2 is nice, but not as good as original movie. We do not own Patch's London Adventure, but we sometimes borrow from friends. The plot: Patch wants to be 1-of-a-kind, not 1-of-a-101, just like his TV hero, Thunderbolt, who has a sidekick: Little Lightning. The rest of the family moves, but Patch goes with Thunderbolt. Cruella De Vil has her same idea. Why knocking off 2 stars? Lighning turns jelous, and ends up a bad guy. It's the Thunderbolt-loving female dogs fault, admiring Thunderbolt and rudley saying "We don't mean YOU!" to Lightning. And, there is a mistake I noticed by reading another review: Pongo counts 101 puppies, but Pongo and Perdy are one of the 101. They should say 99. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
A Good Movie.......2005-05-24
I really like this movie even though it's not like the original. I think that's a good thing because we get to see what actually happened after the couple bought their "Dalmatian Plantation." Even though it's a good movie, I don't think that it's as good as the original movie.
Great sequel........2005-03-08
I like this particular Disney sequel a lot--and that's not a commonly stated thing. Lars and Little Lightning are easily two of the best newer Disney characters. And the entire film is well-made and enjoyable. However, my one issue with the movie is that Lightning the pembroke corgi is made out, just a little bit, to be a sort of 'bad guy.' He isn't in the least. He didn't start out as a treacherous little dog looking to outshine the 'hero,' Thunderbolt. Au contraire, he spent a lot of time just trying to make the best of being in that ham's shadow. Lightning was a great dog, from the beginning and through to the end. Is it any wonder that at one point he would try to take the TV show for himself? After being treated as an underdog, a mere sidekick, receiving no attention, having to watch the girls swoon over Thunderbolt and shun him? Hardly. Yet this means the movie is successful in creating a character inspiring sympathy. So bravo, Disney; if you could turn out a few more sequels on this level it would be a whole lot nicer!

It's hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney's animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney über-villainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruella's plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple (Jeff Daniels and Jolie Richardson) and make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick and far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, there's a passel of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary--although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Not a patch (or a Pongo) on the original.......2007-08-30
Glenn Close is in this film and she is, as usual, excellent. So, why did I absolutely hate it? Well, Michael Caine put it so well, in words similar to these, "Stop doing remakes, unless the original was terrible". The original One Hundred and One Dalmations was sublime. When I watched this remake, all it did was remind me of the original. I was 11 years old, when I saw it, I am 57 now; and I still love it. My children were brought up on it and my dog jumps up n the sofa, when he hears the first twilight bark and he never moves until it's over (I know he,I, or both of us are pathetic). I am sure that this remake is not a bad film, it is probably quite good. But it's like comparing a beef liver with Foie Gras - No competition! The great sadness is that Disney do not realise what they have. They need to re-release the original (It would certainly cost them less) and educate a whole new generation into animation perfection. Until that moment arrives, I sincerely hope that you enjoy this remake. Get a copy of the original if you can. And let the dog on the sofa.
Noble and Heroic.......2007-07-01
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
Based loosely on the writings of French animal-rights activist Jean Latrille, this movie succeeds in revealing the inhumane aspect of the puppy-farm industry, and depicts the heroic efforts of those who are honor-bound to stop it.
Brothers Jasper (Hugh Laurie) and Horace (Mark Williams) mount a daring raid of a Dalmatian breeding facility, located incongruously in a tony London neighborhood, in an attempt to rescue a group of Dalmatian puppies that are bound for market, where they'll be sold to vicious and uncaring English families. The brothers are aided by their altruistic and devoted cousin, Crue (also, obviously, a heavy-metal fan) who is played by Glen Close.
The movie follows the successful rescue attempt as the brothers lead the puppies through the wilds of Great Britain, where they find refuge at a paradisaical English estate. The film continues as a counter-raid, led by the evil agents of the puppy farm and abetted by hundreds of brainwashed animals -both wild and domesticated, is successful in recapturing the group of puppies, along with eighty-six other puppies previously rescued by the brave brothers. Crue is degraded in an inhumane manner, and the brother's vehicle is firebombed.
The film ends as the puppies are forced to fend for themselves in the wilds of the English countryside, living off the frozen remains of dead sheep and discarded fish-and-chip wrappers. Later, reverting to their wild traits, the puppies form packs in order to survive. One such pack, led by the strong, dominant male Lucky, survives on the outskirts of London by, ironically, poaching on cats and small family dogs, and soon mount an attack on the very same puppy-farm that owes to their existence, along the way dispatching brainwashed animals, corrupt bobbies, and ego-maniacal video-game designers.
Shot in cinema verite by French cinematographer Pierre Latrille (grandson of the original author) this film very aptly captures the idealistic brothers, the beauty of the English wilds, the random hubbub of big city London, and the horrors encountered by a group of animals born in the wrong place, and in the wrong time.
Great Movie.......2007-05-17
Bought this for my [..]daughter for her b'day. She had worn out the VHS tape and this one was hard to find. Very funny movie for kids and adults.
Not what I expected.......2007-05-16
I was under the impression I'd be able to play this in my DVD player, but I couldn't because it was a different region DVD, meaning I couldn't play it in my U.S. DVD player. I had to have someone fix it so it would be a Region 2 DVD in order to play it. Plus, it took forever to get here. I think part of it was because it was coming from the U.K. and not the U.S. (not aware of that)
My Favorite movie of all time!.......2006-02-21
101 Dalmatians is simply my favorite movie of all time. Funny plot and loveable charcthers and great rated G horror movie. I was very young when I saw "101 Dalmatians" in 1996 and I was So scared of Cruella but, that is sort of a good thing because Glenn Close's proformance is so great and that is what I look for in a movie. Almost 10 years later, "Dalmatians" is still fresh and great. One thing I have a problem with is the price for the DVD. Even though I love this movie, Im not going to pay that price. Great movie way awful DVD price.
Summary: Anita {Joley Richardson} and Rodger {Jeff Daniels} are from two totally diffrent worlds. The only thing they have in common is they own Dalmatian dogs. Anita is a fasion designer and Rodger is a video game designer. They meet when thier dogs, Pongo and Perdy find eachother in the park. Rodger and Anita meet, fall in love and marry. So happily eaer after right? WRONG! Anita's boss Cruella Dev il{Glenn Close} happens to love fur and her favorite kind is dalmatian fur. With the help of two henchmen Horace and Jasper, Cruella plans to steal the 15 puppies that belong to Pongo and Perdy. The dogs will get even and that results to a happy ending.
If you have young children I reccomend the 1961 animated movie. The animals talk and Cruella is less scary. Please wait untill your kids are older before viewing this movie. If your going to buy this movie, buy the VHS or wait untill hopefully, the price of the DVD goes down. What would please me would be a 10th anneversery DVD with lots of extras and for it to be reasonablly priced. Check out the sequel to this movie "102 Dalmatians", although it might not be as good as this it's a fair sequel.

Dalmatian Serration (attempted).......2003-10-06
The saga of 101 spotted pups abducted by a omnivorous fashion maven after their pelts. In classic Disney fashion, exquisite animation, infectious music, endearing characters, and a gory storyline are melded into a truly hypnotic tale. This movie operates on a deep personal level for me as arch-villainess Cruella De Vil is almost certainly based upon my ex-wife. Not only is her lust for the epidermi of adorable animals eerily familiar, but the physical resemblance between the two is striking - particularly since my ex started going gray in the mid-1980's. My four-year-old twins (from a second marriage, their genes therefore untainted by Cruella's doppelganger) arrived at this conclusion with absolutely no prompting from me. The first time De Vil flounced onto the screen they both squealed "Daddy look - it's Auntie Sheatan!" (i.e. the name I encourage them to call her, Sheatan being Arabic for the man with the horns and the cape). Whatever your own personal experiences with De Vil or her look-alikes, you and your children will delight in this vengeful tale of her deserved comeuppance.
My kids loved this one........2003-07-03
Purchased at first oportunity, this was a heavily watched movie by kids when they were pre-kindergarten. They are older now, and still watch it occasionally.. the true test of a kids movie don't you think?!
A spiffy remake paired with it's competent sequel.......2001-06-25
I'm still not completely sold on the 'necessity' of the live-action 101 Dalmations, but in deference to millions of other Disney fans, I'll admit the first romp with Glenn Close was nicely done. Like anyone old enough to remember seeing the animated version as a kid, I had a few melancholy moments watching the remake, noticing bits that had been updated or altered to make the story more contempo.
Making Cruella (or more precisely, Glenn Close) the star of the remake suited Disney and moviegoers just fine, but I think her casting tips the balance of the story toward spectacle. The improved animation with CGI tips it even further, although it's hard to fault the production for using the best modern tech. I guess it's all part and parcel of trying to make a twentysomething film palatable to a modern audience. In my opinion, the original film has less visual dazzle but a lot more character as a whole.
As for buying this twofer instead of just one of the films...it's completely a matter of personal tastes. If Glenn Close was one of your biggest reasons for enjoying 101 Dalmations, the sequel is probably a must-view. The movie is almost entirely hers, as Cruella is given the lion's share of characterization and screen time. The supporting cast is affably anonymous, with the exception of Gerard Depardieu, who must have sold his soul to Disney to get stuck in such an apalling role. (Gratuitous humiliation: Gerard's Van Pelt winds up face-first in a toilet.) If you found yourself slightly disappointed by aspects of the 101 remake (like the fact that the dogs didn't talk any more), the sequel isn't likely to improve your opinion (even though you'll get a talking cockatiel with the voice of Monty Python's Terry Gilliam).
This DVD set has the usual Disney extras, at least for modern releases, so you can expect subtitles, some "making of" docu-footage and (drumroll please)... a garsh-honest DELETED SCENE from 102. (In it, Cruella is released from prison...but don't blink 'cause it's a short segment.) Put these bonuses together with the features and you have, IMO, a little four star bundle of entertainment to enjoy. (My personal rating for this package is about 3 stars, but I've adjusted my final rating to reflect the belief that most young kids will love these films in all their live-action spectacle.)

When I bought this 2-pack it said widescreen edition in the description (that has been changed now, although when you look at the pic it still says widescreen on both films). 101 Dalmatians was not as good as the first part, which I simply adore. So, if you want widescreen, buy the seperately, and maybe even skip the sequel.

All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Classics?.......2007-07-20
Maybe its just me, but when I think classic Disney, Mulan, Hercules and the Lion King 2 are not what come to mind. Why the second Lion King instead of the first? I would think a classic collector's set would include some of Disney's most cherished works: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast to name a few. I also agree with what many reviewers have already stated, the price is ridiculous especially when some of my favorite classics are not even included.
classic? psheah. whatever........2007-01-16
3 stars for being Disney.
Minus 2 for not having Aladdin.
That is all.
NINE WRONG ITEMS.......2006-12-25
I ordered the walt disney animated anthology the classic collector's set which was suppose to come with, the little mermaid, hercules, mulan, pinocchio, the jungle book, peter pan, lady and the tramp, the lion king II:simba's pride and one hundred and one dalmations instead we were sent cars, pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest, the sword in the stone, the rescuers, bedknobs and broomsticks, herbie fully loaded, miracles, and the shaggy dog....very disappointing for the kids christmas morning!
Well priced.......2006-09-25
Despite what other reviewers are saying, this collection is a good buy! Why, price AND collectors value. Each of this dvd's are limitted addition- which DON'T get re-released. And the prices... lets go over them, according to Disney's collectors item list.
The Little Mermaid 29.99
The Jungle Book 34.99
Hercules 34.99
Mulan 34.99
Peter Pan 54.99
Pinocchio 34.99
Lady and the Tramp 34.99
Lion King II 29.99
This adds up to over $270. But the set is retailed for $500, how is this still a good deal? Well disney doesn't sell Peter pan, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp as limitted addition and they are hard to find, these prices are based on (with the excetpion of Peter Pan) what they were last officially sold at. What you find is Special and Platinum addition. Further more in 2007 Hercules and Lion II are expected to come out on Platinum, meaning the Limitted Addition ones will be worth more. Yes, limitted addition doesn't have two discs poor movie, but collector wise, its worth more.
Blockbuster has a more accurate price list for when they by these movies. To buy these BRAND NEW, the cheapest one is The Little Mermaid (not in Limitted but in Special Addition) and that is $50. Other such as Hercules are worth $75. Thats adds up to at least $600. So now, its cheaper.
More so, some of these movies have already been released in platinum, meaining they won't EVER be released again.
This is a good deal, and as you can see the so-called "collectors" who troll it haven't done any research.
For those of you who buy it just to watch it, I suggest buying the cheap platinum additions.
Also, a fact for those angered by a sequel appearing. Lion King II sold better than the orignal Lion King, and better then any other Disney Sequel. In fact, its is one of the top 20 Disney movies that sold well. Seems most Disney "fans" loved this movie (and I find it one of the only good Disney Sequels.)
For any of you wanting to start a Disney Colelction that's sure to make a return on your investment- buy this if you can afford it.
A Comment about the reviewer "A Viewer".......2006-09-04
The older titles are not in widescreen because in the days when they came out in theatres, the theatre screens were not widescreen. So it is observing their original aspect ratio. Maybe you should do some research before you review something.
I do however not understand why Lion King II made it on this set...I hate the disney sequels.
