Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas

Not what I remember.......2007-05-06
I bought this since I thought this was an old favorite DVD when I was little but looking back, it just makes no sense and is really redundant. I only recommend for little children to watch.
Thumbelina DVD.......2007-01-16
The movie came in great condition. It took a really long time for it to get here but I think that had something to do with the bad snow storm in Colorado since it was stuck in Colorado forever. Overall it is great!!

Hans Christian Andersen meets the Grimm Brothers in Disney's animated blending of two classics. Of course there are significant updates: Thumbelina (Jennifer Love Hewitt) doesn't need others to come to her aid; she rescues herself--and others. Between the evil circus sideshow owner who keeps her incarcerated until young adulthood, the Mole King (Peter Gallagher) who twice abducts her for marriage, and a scientifically inclined boy who traps both little people in test tubes, there is plenty of rescuing to be done. Tom Thumb (Elijah Wood), also kidnapped in infancy, had a happy childhood but sets out in search of kin. The small pair meet cute, bicker, fall in love, and, eventually, find their way back to their small village. The animation is a little flat, the songs fairly drippy, but the voice casting is stellar (Bebe Neuwirth, Jane Leeves, Robert Guillaume, etc.) and the underdog story line will appeal to the kids. Ages 3 to 7. --Kimberly Heinrichs

I DO NOT LIKE IT ONE LITTLE BIT! .......2007-04-20
I do not like this movie, at all! It is nothing like disney's thumbelina! Now there's something to by! Just take my advice, do not by this for your child! They will be VERY dissapointed!
P.S CHACHACHA IS A VERY LAME SONG!
Great Movie.......2003-08-11
Now,this movie was great. Diffeent from the original thumbelina, but s entertainig. The grandkids really enjoyed it. At first a little scary, the mole is ugly, but the more they watched, the more they ejoyed. Good job.
it was awsome.......2003-06-04
the movie is soo cute. i loved it!!! the songs are great special the welcome to my hole!but most of all i liked the songi am so all alone! i think even for a cartoon tom was a cutie pie!i hope the soundtrack is out so i can get it!i watch it about 20 times is good!
Great movie for kids!.......2003-04-08
Adventurous, funny, melodic, nice story-line. Great movie for those lazy afternoons. See for yourself. Excellent performance by Jennifer Lowe Hewitt in "I am alone" and "I was once alone". You will love it!
(If you don't then you are definitely TOO OLD. Don't watch PG-13s.)
The less-detailed animation is the only cons I could find. My daugther and I loved watching little Tumbelina's journey to find her love and home. The story contains humour (the two moles are strikingly similar (and grotesque) to Pumba and Timon in Lion King), the little people village somehow feels like Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. The songs are worth listening to couple times. You will like the option to play them again (and with lyrics!).
Wow..what a bad movie.......2003-01-04
This movie fails at everything it attempts to achieve. I watched Tom Thumb and Thumbelina after reading several bad reviews. I am very happy to say that it lived up to each and every terrible review. The songs (specifically: one, two cha cha cha) are very poor. And Disney should learn that 3 songs does not make a movie a musical. Secondly the plot is boring, confusing, uneventful, and full of holes. The characters themselves are lifeless. Also, someone should tell Disney that children do not understand Richard III references. The animation is also really awful. At times it becomes blurry and does not result in the creation of distance which it attempts to create. Basically the animation leaves you dizzy and straining to see the picture. In addition, the characters are badly drawn and the animals are completely pathetic.I pity Elijah Wood, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and the others involved in the creation of this movie nothing could have saved it. The only positive aspect of this movie is that it is so bad you can laugh at it. So for all you college students, adults, and teenagers looking for a good laugh...this is your movie. By the way you can sing along with One, Two, Cha, Cha, Cha after movie. But there's no commentary on the DVD..hmmm... I wonder why?

Carrie Fisher in a lovely performance.......2004-11-10
FAERIE TALE THEATRE's adaptation of THUMBELINA is one of their most imaginative, featuring Carrie Fisher in the title role.
A lonely char-woman (Conchata Ferrall) is given a magical barley seed, which sprouts into a lovely flower. When the flower opens, out pops beautiful Thumbelina (Carrie Fisher). The char-woman's wish to be a mother has been granted, and the pair could not be happier. But Thumblina's happy life with her mother is short-lived when the tiny creature is kidnapped by Mother Toad...
A beautiful entry in the series. Co-starring William Katt as the Prince of the Flowers and Burgess Meredith as Mr Mole. Carrie Fisher is radiant in her performance.
Definite kid-pleaser.......2003-01-09
My three-year-old daughter fell in love with this the first time we borrowed it from the library. I enjoyed it myself; my only gripe is Conchata Ferrell's performance. This usually very talented actress seems bored to tears and injects absolutely no feeling into her role as Thumbelina's mother. It's as if she was directed to perform as stoically as possible. I don't get it at all. I am also not impressed with Carrie Fisher's singing here. I know she is capable of singing quite beautifully, I just don't think the folkish songs in this tale are well suited to her instrument. It's hard to pull off such dirges unless the singer has that ethereal, almost mediaeval quality to her voice (think Loreena McKennitt, Mediaveal Baebes). But those minor complaints are of no consequence whatsoever to the intended audience. Children will certainly be enchanted! It's witty script and a fun production.
The Little Thumb with a Big Heart.......2001-07-28
"Thumbelina" is a fantastic retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "Little Thumb".
Produced in 1983 (and released the following year), as part of Shelley Duvall's charming live-action "Faerie Tale Theatre", the narrative is told with good humour, imagination, and a great sense of fun. The magnificent cast adds much colour and warmth to the proceedings. In particular, Carrie Fisher, in the title role, delivers a captivating performance. She makes an extremely attractive heroine, not to mention one who's "more than just another pretty face". She's an absolute delight, adding her unique qualities to the role. Not only is she pint-sized in real life (although not quite as tiny as a thumb!), she has a lovely, deep voice that is quite at odds with her diminutive stature. When she sings, it is a beautiful and rewarding experience. Indeed, she sings with "an angel's voice". (This is also a highlight for any Carrie Fisher fan, as she began her career as a singer, and yet she only sings briefly in "Hannah and Her Sisters", 1986, and in the Walt Disney live-action comedy, "Sunday Drive", also released in 1986.)
Carrie Fisher is supported by equally delightful character actors. The late Burgess Meredith is in top form as Mr Mole, the second would-be husband of Thumbelina. Likewise, William Katt makes a very positive impression as the Prince of the Flower Angels.
This wonderful fairy tale is further enhanced by excellent production values, including great music, atmospheric sets, and good costumes and creatures like Mother Toad, her hapless son, Herman, the Fieldmouse, and the Swallow.
The script faithfully follows the original story, although the gender of the Fieldmouse has been changed, making for a more convincing friendship with Mr Mole to exist, as well as creating a heartfelt guardianship of Thumbelina along strictly platonic lines.
This well-written and perceptive tale ("I'm always the bride, but never the bridesmaid") makes for enchanting family entertainment. "Thumbelina" delivers a great message, too, but above all, it's storytelling at it's most memorable.
I applaud executive producer Shelley Duvall, and all involved, for giving such a wonderful gift. It's up there with Jim Henson's equally engaging "Storyteller" anthology series, produced in the late 1980s, and the "The Doll", an Emmy Award winning episode of "Amazing Stories" (of the same era).
For me, it's an extra special treat because Carrie Fisher became much more than just Princess Leia with this performance. Besides, she continues to melt me every time she smiles as the Ultimate Flower Angel! Let's hope that this "Faerie Tale Theatre" production, along with my other favourites like "Beauty and the Beast", are re-released soon. Preservation on DVD for future generations is highly recommended.

I was looking some dvds for my grand daughter in Spanish so i bought this one but i didn't find as good as i was expecting.
thumbelina.......2007-01-09
My niece loved this movie so much she cried. I made the best purchase ever when I bought this for her. I am her favorite aunt now!
Charming movie!.......2006-03-31
I'm glad I listened to my friends when choosing to view this film. It is perfectly wonderful, the animation is a little on the un-expensive side, but the image and sound are perfect and the colors are vibrant and varied. The movie doesn't attempt to be grand or earth-shattering and that is half of its wonder. It is a fifty minute film for every little child to enjoy. Certainly one of the finest animated films to come out of the Goodtimes studios which are known for cheap children's fare. This one is a real winnner and mothers, it's a perfect film for the little ones. No violence, no scary scenes (Except for a little battle with some wolves), lovely music and songs and memorable characters. I love it!
"No one could have a better friend than you.".......2006-02-11
Goodtimes' Thumbelina is an imaginative, charming film that any child is sure to enjoy (Although my father really enjoyed watching the film as well, so the movie is really suitable for anyone looking for a sweet story to dive into).
Surely the title, Thumbelina, rings a familiar bell to anyone's ear thanks to the popular fairy tale about the girl no bigger than one's thumb presented originally by Hans Christian Andersen. Now this story has been retold countless times through books and movies and even just by the passing of words. Goodtimes also took a shot at retelling this popular tale, and ended up with a very nice result.
Goodtimes tells the story of an innocent Thumbelina living with her father in a beautiful meadow along with many other "little people." They live happily but are confronted with a problem - the snow in the mountains are melting, and when the snow melts, all the water will come down into the valley where the little people are. Worried that the dam will break, brave little Thumbelina sets out to go find the prince and bring some help to the meadow before the snow melts. Thumbelina finds herself in a world of hurt along the way, running into characters that mean her harm or want to use her for their own gain. Poor Thumbelina is held back countless times while trying to triumph, luckily, along the way Thumbelina is also confronted with characters who intend to help Thumbelina as much as they can. Resulting in sweet character relationships and scenes.
Sweet, timeless melodies accompany this heart-filled story, all beautiful classical melodies that match so perfectly with the scenes. There's also a sweet song in the beginning of the film, and we are even treated with hearing Thumbelina herself sing "Edelweiss."
There aren't too many films made like this anymore, the world today seems to focus on violence or comedies (a lot of the comedies these days are full of forced humor and not even funny). It's nice to look back on these older films, to see how charming and sweet they are, invigorating and peaceful. Thumbelina is one of those films that possesses all those qualities, any child will enjoy watching Thumbelina.
A perfect film for any little boy or girl to watch!.......2004-09-24
Goodtimes' films are known to be cheap and downright awful, don't let those adult comments fool you, any child will enjoy a Goodtimes film, after all, these films were made for children, so what the heck are adults doing insulting these films? I bet the scores would be higher if these movies were rated by kids.
Anyways, back to Thumbelina. This is the classic tale of the little girl, smaller than a thumb. The story is simple, Thumbelina and her father are happily living at the top of the mountains. However the problem is that a lot of snow is expected this winter and when spring comes, the snow will melt, drowning the little people in the meadows. For this, Father sends his little Thumbelina in a journey to warn everyone, a task that proves a big challenge for someone so tiny. Thumbelina travels through beautiful meadows meeting the most interesting characters, some good and helpful like Big Bear or some with evil intentions like Mona and Mr. Mole.
As the title of the review says, this is a perfect movie for children to watch: sweet loving characters, lovely tunes that caress each scene, no violence and a lot of heart and charm. Animation, of course, doesn't stand up to Disney animation, but children will pay no attention to that, so it won't bother them.
Music and songs, like in many other Goodtimes animated films, are top notch. Thumbelina opens up with an adorable song any little child is sure to enjoy,
"Oh Thumbelina, smaller than my thumb,
You'll save the little people and the princess you'll become,
You are twice as brave as anyone, you are good and true,
Little, tiny Thumbelina, I love you..."
Also, throughout the movie, you'll hear lovely classical melodies, composed by famous musicians, including Beethoven and others. Children are sure to sing along to the classic camp fire song, "Edelweiss."
It's a shame they don't make films like this anymore, "Thumbelina" is a treasure to behold, a perfect example of what a children's film should be like. These Goodtimes films are so cheap, always less than $10, they are a good collection of classics that children can save for and buy on their own.
Customer Reviews:
Not the disney version - and a little weird.......2004-09-04
it's a little weird - this isn't the disney one, and it's pretty strange. My 2.5 year old loves it, but i'm going to rebuy the real one as this is tooo strange for me.
Very well done........2004-01-29
I have twin almost 4 year old girls and this was perfect for them. All three stories are reasonably short (I don't like to park them in front of the TV for too long). The stories all have girl heros who are capable and loving--for example Cinderella forgives her step sisters and finds them good husbands. All three heroines marry a prince--which I know some people don't like, but it doesn't bother me. The music is terrific and the lyrics are lovely. The animation is low end, also something that doesn't bother me.

Customer Reviews:
A charming movie, even if it barely resembles Thumbelina........2007-02-10
I've had this movie on video for years now. I remember watching it as a child and enjoying it so much, I didn't care that the film barely resembles the story of Thumbelina at all. Recently, I managed to find the one copy of this movie Wal Mart had in their one dollar DVD bin. I snatched it up, and just yesterday, I finally watched it. It's as cute as I remember.
The film tells the story of a young girl named Mia. Mia is a troublemaker, and desperate to change her behavior, her mother visits a good witch. The witch gives her a book - Thumbelina. For the spell to work, Mia must become interested in the book and have her mother read it to her. While reading it, her mother falls asleep. Suddenly, Mia shrinks into a two-inch tall creature and is transported to The Land of Her Mother's Dreams. Mia must now go to The Land of South and get the Crystal Prince to wake her mother up so she can re-enter her own world. She is helped by a good witch named Angela, who gives her a pair of magical red shoes and a pendant which helps Mia direct her own personal power. Mia also befriends Noble The Sugar Fairy and Hoppy, the toad who's parents try to force her to marry. She also makes friends with a kindly field mouse named Aunt Ruth and a kind swallow. However, she must also face her enemy, the wicked witch Cassandra.
For a cheaply made budget DVD, this one's actually quite good. The movie is likely sourced from the same VHS video I have, or even more likely, maybe that VHS's higher-quality source. The colors are just a tiny bit washed out at times, and it's a bit grainy, but otherwise, it's a very clean transfer. The sound mix is also quite nicely done. The menus contain animation and good design and the movie's theme song plays over them. Not bad for a cheap DVD job.
If you find this at your local dollar/cheap-o store or Wal Mart or the like, please don't hesitate to snatch this one up. It can be pretty hard to find, so don't let the opportunity to own this pass you by.
A Magial Movie Experience.......2007-01-05
I very seldomly purchase DVDs from the dollar rack. Namely because the majority of the time there's a reason they are there,(i.e. they're rotten)but this movie breaks all the rules for a dollar flick. It's fun, it has humor, the voice acting is great (for most of the characters), and there's an actual story going on. The cast of characters is made up of a majority of likeable and distinguished personalities (My favorite being Noble the Sugar Fairy). The music is very cute, and one little number about an evil snake literally made me laugh out loud due to its blatant corniness. The movie concludes with a surprising twist, and the crowd goes wild. Needless to say, I am very pleased with Thumbelina: A Magical Story, and although I am happy to have gotten it at the price of a dollar, I can't help but think what a steal it is at that price, and what a shame it is that it's been overlooked so much. That's the reason I decided to write this review... I want you, the consumer, to know that this flick has outdone many recent animated movies. (aka Open Season, The Ant Bully, Hoodwinked, Doogal, Atlantis, Curious George, Chicken Little, the list goes on) If you want your kids to watch an intelligient movie that you too can enjoy, pick this puppy up at Wal-Mart, The Dollar Tree, or wherever you can find it. The animation may be old-fashioned hand-drawn anime (It's from the same company that created Scamper the Penguin), but its overall presentation far surpasses anything you'll see in theatres this year.
