Barbie as Rapunzel will thrill children aged 3 to 8, following the success of Barbie in the Nutcracker. Barbie may have started life as a doll in the 1950s, but these days she's also making her name as a computer-animated film star. In a modern twist on the classic fairy tale, Barbie stars as Rapunzel--a courageous and imaginative princess who is locked away in a tower by the evil witch Gothel. With help from her friends (Penelope the cute purple dragon and Hobie the rabbit) and through the power of her own creative energies, she paints her way out of the tower to find freedom, truth, and love.

Anjelica Huston is memorable as the vocal talent behind the unbalanced and scary Gothel, and excellent sound effects and colors greatly enhance the film. Hugo the mighty dragon, Otto the nasty ferret, and the sword fight between the feuding kings will hold the attention of those brothers of Barbie fans who are less than enthusiastic about watching this 80-minute film, but essentially this is a little girls' film and the outrageously pink castle, the magical fashion show before the masked ball, and the fairy-tale wedding will make it a firm favorite for that audience. --Tracey Hogan

Description

Long, long ago, in a time of magic and dragons, there lived a girl named Rapunzel who had the most beautiful radiant hair the world had ever seen. But Rapunzel's life was far from wonderful. She lived as a servant to Gothel, a jealous, scheming witch who kept her hidden deep in a forbidding forest, guarded by the enormous dragon Hugo and surrounded by an enchanted glass wall.

However, in a twist of fate, Rapunzel's discovery of a magic paintbrush leads her on a journey that will unravel a web of deception, bring peace to two feuding kingdoms, and ultimately lead her to love with the help of Penelope(TM), the least intimidating of dragons!

Stunningly produced in computer animation, the movie stars Academy Award(R) - Anjelica Huston* as Gothel and Cree Summer as Penelope(TM). The movie features a song by Samantha Mumba and music by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Barbie(TM) as Rapunzel shows that love and imagination can change the world...

When you hear, "Barbie as Rapunzel", I know what you're thinking: "It's a Barbie movie! It CAN'T be good! It just going to be some big marketing scam!" Yes, this truly has all the earmarks of an hour-long advertisement. But guess what?
It's not only a coherent, functioning movie--it's actually VERY entertaining.
I am not a big Barbie fan, but my family rented this movie at my little sister's behest. I'm interested in animation, so I decided to at least see what the first five minutes were like, planning to leave as soon as the opening credits were through rolling. But do you know what? Something strange happened to me. I suddenly started to sit forward in my seat. I was drawn into the story, forgetting the fact that it was Barbie, forgetting everything except the story unfolding before me.
As unlikely as it may seem, this movie actually excels in music, script, characters, and even acting! Considering the budget that this movie must have had, it's a truly great piece of craftsmanship. Everything has a class to it and a finesse that is rarely seen even in the big studio features nowadays.
If you have a little girl, I highly recommend this movie. The way the characters interact--especially Rapunzel and Gothel & Rapunzel and the Prince--is a really great role model. This is a story about truth and love. Rent it! Buy it! Wear it out! You won't be sorry!

3 out of 5 stars Daughter Loves It .......2007-08-11

On a purely entertainment level, this is a hit. My daughter loves this movie and if I let her, she'd be quite content to watch it all day long, every day.

I will say as an adult the songs are all highly annoying and this movie bears only a slight resemblance to the actual Rapunzel story. I find the cute little brothers and sisters thing to be repetitive in the Barbie movies, which again, seems to work for my kid but not so much for me.

In any case, it's not oscar worthy but for some light entertainment, it gets the job done if you can overlook the fact this story has nothing to do with the actual Rapunzel story. It also has some dark themes (which many Grimm tales do, even if this isn't actually based on one)like an evil stepmother type figure who uses magic to keep Rapunzel captive, etc.

Pretty computer animation.

The animation is not always perfect with arms at odd lengths and angles but the color is beautiful. My girls ages 2 and 5 love all the Barbie movies. Just don't expect it to be anything like the original story. She has long hair and there is a tower but that is it! :D

5 out of 5 stars surprised and impressed.......2007-06-19

I am not a huge Barbie fan. My 5 year old daughter does not own any Barbie dolls. She asked to rent this movie from the library. I agreed on the condition that we would watch it together and turn it off if I took objection to it in any way. I was very surprised to find it a delightful retelling of this fairy tale. I love the way it emphasized many virtues such as kindness, compassion, and honesty. My daughter LOVED it. My favorite parts of the dvd were the bonus features. One feature interviews a 19 year old girl who is a professional artist. It shows her painting in her studio as well as teaching an art class for young girls and preparing to show her work at a gallery. It is excellent and inspiring. Another bonus feature is an interactive game that asks viewers to help Barbie decorate the castle by hanging paintings. She describes a painting and the viewer must select the described painting from a grouping of three or four. When the correct painting is chosen, Barbie gives more info. about the famous artwork including technique and history...really great! Not only will your child probably love this video...she might actually learn something, too!

Look who became a star. Barbie comes to life in Barbie in the Nutcracker, a computer-animated Christmas tale that quite naturally takes the longtime favorite doll into a new realm. The plot is a slight variation on the traditional ballet based on Tchaikovsky's music. Instead of being in an open-ended dream, Barbie and her escort, the Nutcracker (soon to be Ken, natch), are on an adventurous quest. Along the way there are more creatures and derring-do than in the original. The sole known voice talent, Tim Curry, has a good old time as the Mouse King, and the animated dancing is gracefully adapted from New York City Ballet choreography. A few clever characters, bright animation, and wonderful music should entrance any Barbie fan ages 3 to 9. The 78-minute feature debuted on video shortly before playing on CBS in 2001.
