It's not easy being an ogre, but Shrek finds it doubly difficult for an ogre like himself to fill in for a king when his father-in-law King Harold of Far, Far Away falls ill in this third Shrek movie. Shrek's attempts to fulfill his kingly duties play like a blooper reel, with boat christenings and knighting ceremonies gone terribly wrong, and to say that Shrek (Mike Myers) is insecure about his new role is a gross understatement. When King Harold (John Cleese) passes away, Shrek sets out with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) to find Arthur (Justin Timberlake), the only heir in line for the throne besides himself. Just as Shrek sets sail to find Artie (as Arthur is more commonly known), Fiona (Cameron Diaz) shocks Shrek with the news that she's pregnant. Soon after, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) sends Captain Hook (Ian McShane) in pursuit of Shrek and imprisons Fiona and her fellow Princesses as part of his plan to install himself as King of Far, Far Away. Shrek finds an awkward Artie jousting with his high school classmate Lancelot (John Krasinski) and, while Artie is certainly no picture of kingliness, Shrek is determined to drag him back to Far, Far Away to assume the throne. Mishaps and comedy abound, including a spell gone wrong that locks Donkey and Puss-in-Boots inside one another's bodies. While Fiona and the other Princesses prove they're anything but helpless women, Artie and Shrek battle their own fears of inadequacy in a struggle to discover their own self-worth. In the end, Shrek, Artie, and Fiona each learn a lot about their individual strengths and what truly makes each of them happy. Of course, it's the pervasive humor and wit that make Shrek the Third so side-splittingly appealing. Rated PG for some crude and suggestive humor, but appropriate for most families with children ages 6 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

Waste!.......2007-09-10
Im sorry, this movie sucked. Shrek 2 was way better, this movie(Shrek 3) they just threw together. Me and my friend fell asleep watching it. Trust me, rent it first.
the third.......2007-09-07
It is funny how most people like the first and second the most, but I think the first and third are the best, why? Because aside from Puss in Boots, Shrek 2 was just one crack at pop culture after another, shrek 3 had more story to it, and less pop culture
It Rocks.......2007-08-30
I own all the Shrek so naturely I had to go to the theatre to see this. The sound track rocked and the action was a little slow at first but when it took off it was non-stop. Shrek the Third in my opinion was the best of all and the women ruled. GO Girls
You'll laugh..........2007-08-28
...just not as hard as with the first two. By no means is this a bad movie, but I do agree with the other customers that the writers are taking advantage of the Shrek hype and don't really care about the outcome of the movie, as long as it makes money.
I did enjoy the last 20 minutes or so (won't spoil anything). But in between, there was not enough material to make it worth your time.
Even though the bonus features are good, as with the other Shrek movies, the incentive to acutally purchase this DVD is probably not so strong.
Why not just rent it at Blockbuster or OnDemand for a fraction of the price?
Shrek the Third - it doesn't sucketh; three and a half stars.......2007-08-27
Some SPOILERS follow.
Even though Shrek - Sir Shrek, that is - and Princess Fiona have become a fixture at the royal court of the kingdom of Far Far Away, it doesn't mean that our ogrish hero has to like it. With Fiona's father having been transformed into a frog (see SHREK 2) and then falling ill, Shrek grumpily chips in by undertaking some of his dad-in-law's royal chores. But the mantle of the purple settles uncomfortably on Shrek's shoulders (and it probably itches, too). All he really wants to do is take Fiona and go back to his beloved swamps. But that would have to wait when the fast expiring King names Shrek as his successor. But Shrek doesn't want the crown and so, with Donkey and Puss in Boots in tow and again providing sidekick duties, he goes on a journey to fetch the next guy in line for the throne - Prince Arthur. Of course, there are obstacles awaiting Shrek. For one thing, Fiona lays down some news which distresses our ogre. Then Prince Charming, who's been reduced to entertaining in dinner theater, decides to make another bid for his own "happily ever after." Accordingly, he manages to enlist a heapload of fairy tale villains (Captain Hook, Rumpelstiltskin, the Headless Horseman, the Cyclops, several villainous trees, and more...).
SHREK THE THIRD, while being a fun and funny flick, is the least of the three Shrek movies. Of course, the element of surprise, which made the first Shrek film such an uberhit as it riotously turned fairy tale tradition on its ear, is long since gone. The sequel provided us with the kingdom of Far Far Away, which paved the way for even more snarky, nudge-in-the-rib stabs at pop culture in general and at the Disney film factory line in particular. Some of the wit is still here in SHREK THE THIRD, though not as razor sharp. The humor still made me smile, though it wasn't quite as subversive or as disarming. Basically, it's all stuff I'd seen already. I was waiting for something new to knock me off my feet. It didn't happen.
The movie suffers most when the spotlight is on its newest character Prince Arthur. As voiced by Justin Timberlake, "Artie's" tepid personality proves to be a detriment not so easily brushed aside. Artie is introduced as a loser teen and then, as the film progresses, supposedly shows his mettle when he reveals his smarts by throwing a crying fit and, later on, by unveiling his gift of gab (where was this when he was getting picked on in medieval high school?). To me, Artie comes off as wheedling and even a bit disingenuous. The fact that he took screen time away from Shrek and that he has a significant role to play in the film's resolution just doesn't sit well with me.
Points are also taken away for not giving heftier roles to Donkey and Puss in Boots. These two great characters are pretty much relegated to the background. Their one highlight sub-plot, which has them switching bodies, doesn't pay off with anything significant and is, therefore, superfluous and lame to the nth power. It was funny, though, to watch Puss, while in Donkey's form, attempt to use his "cute" power.
Despite a nagging feeling of "Is that it?" I have to point out that there's still so much going for this film. For one thing, the old reliables are at it again. Mike Meyers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots have their characters down pat and their voice performances are seamless. Meanwhile, John Cleese as the frog king is priceless in his one prolonged cameo. Newcomers of note are Eric Idle as the slightly skewed Merlin and several SNL actresses portraying various fairy tale princesses. Rupert Everett also returns as that royal swine Prince Charming and is majestically over the top, while Ian McShane has several standout moments as Captain Hook.
The incorporation of classic rock music adds a nice touch to several scenes, although it's a bit odd to hear Led Zeppelin, Heart, and Wings in an animation. But, hey, any chance to hear "Barracuda" or "Live and Let Die" is a good thing. The animation? Wow! It's amazing. If anything, the CG is even better than in the prior Shrek flicks. For example, the expressions on the characters' faces are realistically conveyed. Even when groaning thru the one scene of Prince Charming tossing his hair in slow motion, I still couldn't help but note the excellence of the graphics. So, yes, a well-deserved pat on the back for DreamWorks.
SHREK THE THIRD has already made piles of money and stands to make even more with the dvd release. And, apparently, a fourth installment is in the works, as well as a Puss in Boots spin-off. While this third film doesn't live up to the quality and originality of the first two, it still boasts several sparkling moments, the aforementioned frog king scene being only one of 'em. There are also some nice bits with the Princesses Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. I also liked that the medieval high school girls spoke with "thees" and "thous" but in a Valley accent. And, of course and always, at the heart of this franchise, there is Shrek, the cantankerous ogre with the heart of gold. True, he doesn't do much here (his supporting cast supply most of the smiting) but he does provide the grounding element of the movie and remains the preferred point of view character for the audience. As more Shrek movies are churned out, it's nice to see that some things do stay the same.
SHREK THE THIRD elicits some laughs, plenty of smiles, and, sadly, a few yawns. The good will garnered from the first two installments goes quite a ways in carrying this film. Ultimately, I do consider the time and money to have been well spent on this one. So, yes, I got my Shrek on, now go get yours.

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

The Start of a Great Saga.......2007-08-29
This is the first in a great series of fairy tale parodies! A must buy!
"What kind of knight are you?".......2007-08-18
The answer to the question is that Shrek is one of a kind. Mike Myers is the voice behind the best-known ogre in the movie industry. Shrek lives in a secluded area of the forest, but when Lord Farquaad resolves that all the fairy creatures need to live in this area, Shrek's peace is seriously affected. Thus, he focuses on scaring everyone away, even though at heart he is a big teddy-bear. One day, he sees a regiment from the kingdom of Far Far Away capturing fairies. Lord Farquaad, the leader of the oppressors, thinks that the talking donkey deserves to be incarcerated, but Shrek cannot help himself and rescues the poor thing.
This is not the last Shrek and Farquaad will see of each other. The latter decides that he would like to marry Princess Fiona, but there is a small obstacle in the way. She is held hostage in a castle defended by a fierce dragon and many have succumbed in their rescue attempts. Therefore, Farquaad organizes a tournament to decide who should go to bring back his wife-to-be. You can take a guess as to who the lucky winner is.
This is not your typical fairy tale, and it is definitely intended for an audience a little more mature, but it is an enjoyable one. There is one word that defines this movie to the T: humor. The actors selected to give voice to the characters of Shrek (Myers), Lady Fionna (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are perfect for their roles. The writers also did an excellent job in picking the jokes and the funny comments throughout the production are something to cherish.
There is also a wide selection of extra features in the two-disc DVD; including an area designated as Dreamwork Kids that allows you to select you favorite scenes, watch two music videos (Baha Men and Smash Mouth), and play interactive games and trivia. My favorite extra feature was the one that discusses the technical aspects of the animation, because this is one of the most amazing aspects of this film. Nowadays there are many examples of animation of this quality, but when "Shrek" first came out, it was one of a kind. Finally, the music completes the total package, since it blends perfectly with the different parts of the plot and it is catchy and enjoyable. Overall, a great effort that cannot be missed!
Alright Shrek, you and me, bring it on!.......2007-08-02
I've had a bone to pick with Shrek for like, what...6 years now? It's time to settle the score. The Patriarch way!
Shrek is supposed to be a kid's movie. Thus it is filled with bathroom humor and other crude jokes supposed to appeal to a five year old. Also, as with every other "kid's" movie made today, it's filled with jokes only adults would understand. This is what makes the film popular with children as well as adults. This is just wrong though, a lot of these jokes aren't appropriate for children. For example, at the end of this movie, during the credits, an anthropomorphic cat licks it's genitals. This is sick. Having an animal with the attributes of a human lick itself is the same thing as having a human lick itself.
How about the morals this movie teaches. Shrek is a crude, rude, disgusting ogre. A human example of him is that guy that drained your septic that one time and had no qualms about using foul language and farting around you. Or Michael Moore, take your pick. The moral of this story is to see past his grossness and see the good person inside. If it's all the same to you, I don't want my children hanging around with hobos, drug addicts, and trailer trash because this hokey film told them to. In the end of this movie, the princess becomes a disgusting ogre too. So this is supposed to tell my kids, what? That people that look nice on the outside are really disgusting inside? The Shrek generation is going to be so messed up.
I wanted to ignore these grievances, honestly I did. But when they release sequel after sequel, and no matter where I look is Shrek!, I can't hold it in any longer.
I haven't seen the other Shrek films in this series, so I can't review them. I can only imagine how much worse they are however. Shrek 3 apparently has shrek and Fiona having an ogre baby together. Great. Now my kids are going to learn the facts of life from a movie about ogres.
PS: Okay, everybody reading this. I am making this clear-I just coined the phrase, "The Shrek generation." I am going to have this copyrighted. If I ever see a book or movie or documentary, that uses the phrase, "The Shrek Generation" I am going to sue you and demand royalties of some kind.
PPS: This also applies to any variation like, "Generation Shrek" or "Star Shrek: The next Generation"
best movie ever!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-20

The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in Shrek 2. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Monty Python's Flying Circus), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), and Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Not fun, but good animation........2007-07-16
I honestly never laughed while watching this movie, maybe a chuckle or two, it isn't really a fun movie, it's more drama than fun.
I felt like I was watching some soap-opera.
Fiona was cool and had a fun attitude in the first movie, here she is too emotional and whines about everything.
Shrek is annoying, self-absorbed and don't care about her feelings.
How in the world could these two be in love with each other?
They argue like little kids and never try to resolve their argues, they just rely on the other to "give in" and accept the other persons complaint.
Or try some magic potion, ask a fairy godmother for help... I mean, come on - Talk it out!
Oh, and add the King who wants to kill Shrek. WHAT?!
The plot of the movie is soooooo bad and it dosen't really feel like they ever solve any problems, rather "cover them up".
"Puss in Boots" is a new character that joins the cast, I feel however he didn't get enough screen time.
He is cool, has attitude and a really hot voice...
So instead of his cool character, we get to see the childish drama between Shrek and Fiona.
The DVD is annoying, the DVD tries to force you to watch 2 trailers - of two movies I've already seen!
They lock out "Menu", "Chapter Skip", so you "shouldn't" aviod the trailers.
By pressing "Title", then choosing "English" again, I did get into the menu, but this shouldn't excist at all. (and this was on the Scandinavian release, so I don't know if this works on the US release)
I mean, it was bad enough when you had to fastforward the trailers on a VHS, I mean, the reason I buy DVD is to GET RID of the trailers in the beginning. Trailers should be a BONUS, not try to lock out people so they can't watch the movie they paid for.
The movie has nice animation though, that is the only reason I watch it. I wish they had skipped out on the modern music and added more original songs to the movie, because I loved the scene where Fairy Godmother sings, great animation and the song is cool. The modern music made the movie feel more like a music-video than a movie.
Equal to or better than the first.......2007-07-03
This movie was very hilarious. It had the same gags as the first one did, but with many more characters and with a much deeper plot.
This time, Shrek and Fiona are married. They get an announcement from "mom and dad." (That being FIONA's mom and dad) that compels them to journey to the land of "Far Far Away..."
Donkey's back, as is Gingey and the whole crew. Here, we meet Puss, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and we get a glimpse into Fiona's true heart.... a glimpse that makes Shrek question his own existence. Honestly, this movie is very well done. The animation is sharp and bright. The motivation and the plot are both believable, even amid the backdrop of purest fantasy.
Who is Fiona's true love? It's no secret that, by the end of the movie, we learn that Shrek is just THA MAN! (Or is that THA OGRE?)
I really enjoyed this movie. I think it has something for every age.
Shrek 2: Possibly the Worst Movie in History (and I didn't even see it).......2007-07-02
Shrek 2 is one of the worst movies in world history, possibly the worst ever. The jokes, parodies and gimmicks were boring, dumb and retarded, and I wouldn't even let myself fall asleep to this movie because I wouldn't want to have a dream about it, God forbid--watching it while awake is bad enough.
Oh, btw, I didn't actually even see this movie--I just knew that it was awful, so I was intent on never, ever seeing it as long as I live.
I liked the reviewer who suggested we should lock this film up in a secret government facility and away from the outside world. A better idea might be holding a special witch trial and burning the Master Print at the stake.
Btw, I HATED the first Shrek, which I actually did see, and I already HATE Shrek 3 and Shrek 4-1000, or 4-1,000,000, or however many of these monstrosities they force on us.
The main reason I hate Shrek so much is the ridiculous premise of the movie--that "looks don't matter", it's all about "love" and "character". Yeah, right. As if 99% of everyone on Earth doesn't marry partly for looks and attraction (as long as you're not living under the Taliban or The House of Saud)??? Duh! OF COURSE looks matter, they've mattered since Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Marie Antoniette, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, right up to Scarlett Johanssen, Julia Roberts, and "the girl next door".
The moronic, retarded, absurd idea that it's somehow "bad" to like women because they're beautiful strikes me as everything that's wrong with America today--this society is all about denying Reality and living a lie, all for the sake of "getting along", and not "offending anyone". I find the idea that feeling thinking human beings should be prevented from being offended or made to "like people" they don't, by force, to be terrifying. It's literally Orwellian.
The fact that millions of Americans fall for this lunacy, this illogic, frightens me. What is this country coming to?
Please, save us from Shrek, the people who make these sick films, and all the other body snatchers running loose.
THE GREATEST!.......2007-06-28
This Shrek production is FABULOUS! You simply can't improve on PERFECTION. The script, the animation, the MUSIC -- all great. Although I'm not a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed the child-like balance of animated characterizations that took me back some years, but an excellent story line, as well. This is a definite Collector's Item. Everyone, young and old and inbetween, should own SHREK 2. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a "12"!
Very funny and well composed story line.......2007-06-27
Love this one too although I think the first one is a little better but this one has a tons of fun also. Watched several times.

Customer Reviews:

I don't watch many animated features but I did watch Shrek and I thought it was an excellent movie. The actors brought the characters to life and I really liked the movie. In fact we bought the other two Shreks.
