Balto.......2007-07-07
Excellent - I ordered two copies for my grandchildren and it was a hit with them, particularly after I explained to them that it was based on a true story. My 5-year old twin grandchildren (a boy and a girl) must have watched it a dozen times or more. The story idea of having the grandmother take her granddaughter to see the monument was brilliant. My 5-year old granddaughter stunned me by immediately realizing that the grandmother was supposed to be the sick little girl who was saved when the dog team arrived just in time bringing the antitoxin to Nome. The storyline is perfectly gauged to hold the attention of young children and has great educational value - something I can't say about any of the garbage shown on TV these days that is aimed at children.

'Anyone familiar with the Iditarod and why it is run will be highly disappointed with this cartoon's portrayal. There is too much cartoon hoo-haa and not enough substance.'
It's a cartoon, and is therefore not guaranteed to be 100% historically accurate. If you want accuracy, watch a documentary, although I doubt it would have the same impact. I mean, geese don't talk do they? If this film respected the original story, then it would be far less interesting. If only more viewers could see this.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-01-11
Balto II is even more underrated than the first film. Many people say that the first and third films are the best and this one is trash but I disagree, Wolf Quest is the best of the series. The music is beautiful and doesn't detract from the plot whatsoever. The animation is not that great (but you shouldn't judge it JUST by the animation). Unlike the first film, CGI is used and the effect? Stunning, simply stunning, and I mean it in a good way.
As for the story itself? It's about Balto's daughter Aleu, who looks more lupine than her brothers and sisters. Shocked by this, she (like most teens) blames it on her father and runs away, in a quest to find herself. It involves a Kodiac bear, three wolverines, a cunning fox and a pack of wolves.
In this film, the idea of spirit guides and such comes from the beliefs of the Haida, a tribe of Native Americans who lived (and still do) along the coast of Canada and Alaska. I've seen some Christian shoppers crtisise this film about it. That is really offensive to the few remaining Haida, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Not Like the Real Balto.......2006-10-28
Balto was the wolf-husky who led the last leg of a husky-malamute team some 53 miles in 1925 during the Diptheria Epidemic. The beautiful Eskimo dog has been immortalized in statue as a testament to his bravery in getting the team through so the medicine could be provided to the people needing it.
Although this fictionalized account of Balto's life off duty is just that, it does have some appealing qualities. The animation of Balto's mate, the beautiful husky Jenna; Balto's lineage revealing him to be a wolf-hybrid and the story of his beautiful, curly-tailed daughter, Aleu are all literary license that make the story appealing.
Although many disliked this film, it is deeper than it appears on the surface. Aleu is the only one of the Jenna-Balto union who is not adopted. Her siblings could pass for dogs. She is the one who looks like her wolf paternal grandmother; she is the one with the howl of the wolf, the body of the wolf and the curly tail of Jenna. Once she learns she is 1/4 wolf, she is devastated. Balto has to break the news to her about why nobody picked her. Even so, Aleu tries to pass for a husky. She denies her lupine heritage.
Aleu does bring to mind the 1934 and 1959 remake of "Imitation of Life," the story of a girl who passes for white and denies her black mother. The theme of passing has been expounded upon in many books and movies. "Pinky," and "Lost Boundaries," two 1949 films explore this highly charged topic as does "Devil in a Blue Dress," 1972's "Trick Baby;" the 1996 movie, "A Family Thing" and, more recently, "The Human Stain." Sadly, racism in society does prompt many to make this decision, which often affords people jobs and social openings they might not otherwise have. That is a sad comment in today's world. One would hope more progressive thinking has prevailed so as to abolish racism and the need any might feel to take this step.
Aleu does bear a strong resemblance characterwise to the young woman in "Imitation of Life;" using a wolf-husky character offers some "distancing" when introducing this very serious topic. The wolf-husky can indeed be viewed as a metaphor for passing to "get ahead." Aleu sees no benefit to being part wolf; after all, it is her lupine appearance that made her "unadoptable" by human standards.
After some dangerous travails and travels, father and daughter connect and in time their issues are neatly ironed out as would be expected in an animated film. The part that I found most worthwhile was the issue of passing - the beautiful curly tailed wolf-husky felt she had to "pass" and deny part of her heritage - that could be a metaphor for what many people have done in order to get ahead. The very need to pass at all is a sad comment on an aspect of society. Still, I think this is a rather decent film with decent music. I loved the wolves and dogs.
Great movie.......2006-10-28
I read alot of reviews saying how offended they where about this movie and how it teaches kids false relgions.Get over it.Your kids will learn about native american relgions in schools anyway.I see nothing wrong with this film.It was very well drawn(As is all the Balto movies.)And the story line was great it showed more of what a teen would act like.and i thought that the way eveything tied in togther was cool.Buy this movie.
THIS MOVIE IS CREEPY AND WEIRD .....................2006-10-13
I can't even tell you how spooky, bizzare and just plain terrible this movie is! There are creepy spirit creatures in dreams,a mouse singing to father sun and sister moon in the dark with creepy lights, and a great deal of disrespect to parents on Aleu's part.My mom and dad didn't even let us finish it.It is especiallt creepy how Balto's long dead mother appears as a white wolf out of nowhere all throughout the movie. Aleu tries to find her spirit in the stars and other weird things. Don't buy this movie if you don't want you're kids' heads filled with trash.
A sell out of the Balto name.......2006-10-08
I watched this movie with my son, hoping it would be like the Balto story that he is reading in school and boy was I shocked. This movie is terrible, with the child dog acting with tremendous disrespect to her father and some really unnecessary "scary" scenes that add no value to the movie and only serve to drag on this terrible film. It pained me not to just turn it off and see it through to the end. And if you are a Christian, forget this movie.

not bad for a third movie.......2007-03-29
This story is not as spiritual as the second Balto movie. That may reassure some sensitive viewers: no Native American spiritual practices or beliefs are aired/promoted/conveyed. Kodiak, one of Balto's sons, is the center figure that sets the tone of the story when his sled team is challenged to outrace an air plane delivering mail. The goose is back, with a she-goose that is stereotypically Russian femme-fatale. He has problems because he is afraid to fly, and she wants to have a romantic flight...Balto has to help the other dogs rescue the pilot when he becomes lost in a storm. the fighting and social cruelty of "Balto" is missing from this story, but it teaches a few lessons about setting right priorities, being honest in a relationship, and caring for others even if they are disliked. A feel-good movie, definitely child-safe.
Literally an insult to the original.......2007-03-25
The first Balto was great, and I am one of the people who happen to like the second - Wolf Quest. I don't care if 75% of Balto fans say differently, WQ was so much better.
Firstly, it was too 'humanised.' The humans were shoved right in your faces so you lose the feeling of Alaska being 'wild.' Secondly, unlike the original and Wolf Quest, the characters were too underdeveloped, and most of them are annoying. Especially those dog characters, which look like they come from Lady and the Tramp II. Kodi was just a red version of Aleu, except without the sweetness. The film itself had little plot, and was rather tedious. Boris was the only character who kept you from being bored to tears. And Balto 3 lacks what made Balto so special in the first place - the element of wolves. The producers (as well as most reviewers) don't seem to realise this. Here, Balto is referred to as a mere 'dog,' as though you DO need a pedigree to help someone. Yes, I know Balto is part dog and it's nice to see this aspect, but for them not to even mention he is part wolf is a giant insult to the original, as well as stealing away almost all of his personality.
If I were you, I simply skip this and rent Wolf Quest instead. Or, if you didn't like WQ, them simply watch the original for the fortieth time.
Good.......2007-03-16
This DVD was much better than Balto 2. The animation is better and so is the story. But it still doesn't have the quality of the first Balto movie. Should the boys decide to make a Balto 4 they should go back to the animation of the first one and keep the story along the lines of the first and third movies.
Better than Wolf Quest? Puh-leeze!.......2007-01-25
I loved the first Balto film and the second - Wolf Quest. In fact, WQ was my favourite of the series. I am shocked about the way people treat WQ!
WOC (Wings of Change) has better animation than WQ, but the first sequel beat this one by miles.
WOC is not a bad movie (I LOVED that lady goose, so downright hillarious) but it lacked what made Balto so special in the first place - the element of wolves. In this film, he is referred to as a mere 'dog,' not the 'wolfdog' we fell in love with.I forgot that Balto was half-wolf! Most reviewers don't seem to realise this.
If this 'should have been the sequel,' than pigs must fly! Aleu was way more interesting than Kodi; she was wolf-ish, rebellious and naive, like you average teen. Kodi was just boring. The other dogs looked like the dogs from Lady and The Tramp II.
Saying this is better than Wolf Quest (which I suggest you watch instead) is like saying a bowl of watercress soup is more filling than a Christmas turkey. A definate step backwards!
Three times the bark.......2007-01-18
This is the third movie in the hit Balto triology. A word of warning this movie has some mildly intense cartoon action seqeunces in some parts of it that maybe to intense for young kids under the age of ten. In Balto III wings of change young half wolf dog is leding the sleed dogs again. This time it's in a thrilling race to decide who will diliver the mail to Noamo the sleed dogs or the airplane. Your father charaters such as Boris the goose Jenny and those two wacky polar bears are back in this epic movie. Also in this movie are some new characters balto's son Kodo, and a beautiful female goose named Stella. Like the first two balto this movie has increbile characters breath taking adventure seqeunces and beautiful enchanting musical numbers. Will Balto win the race find out in the thrilling conclusion. If you like this I also recommend balto 1 and 2 as well.
Customer Reviews:
An unforgettable series of films........2007-02-10
After being bored out by all the lifeless CGI filmmakers churn out nowadays for money, I needed some refreshment, something which showed that animals were more than just comical in-your-face slapstick stereotypes. Then I found Balto, possibly one of the most beautiful films ever.
Balto:
In the harsh winter of 1925, a diptheria epidemic sweeps through Nome, Alaska, endangering the lives of many children. A dog sled team is sent to get life-saving medicine from the town of Nenana, nearly 600 miles away. Unfortunately, the team gets lost along the way home. The only one who can save them is Balto, a husky who is half wolf, and an outcast among humans and dogs. With the help of Boris, a Russian snow goose, Muk and Luk the polar bear cubs and Jenna, a gorgeous Siberian Husky, Balto eventually realises who he really is.
With some beautiful animated sequences involving a grizzly bear attack and a meeting with a ghostly white wolf, Balto is not to be missed.
Although not historically accurate, it was never intended to be in the first place. Unfortunately, this came out at the same time as Toy Story, and was crushed.
Rating: 5 stars.
Balto - Wolf Quest
Balto is now a father of a litter of puppies, and all of them get adopted apart from his daughter, Aleu. This is because she looks even more like a wolf than her father. On the fateful day he tells her this, she runs way in a quest to find herself. Guided by a raven, Balto goes out to look for her, and what follows is an amazing tale of self-discovery, involving caribou, wolverines, a cunning fox and a starving pack of wolves that desperately need help.
Although seen as the worst of the trilogy, I think that Wolf Quest is the best. The animation is not as good as the original, but it's still good for a direct-to-video sequel. I love the Native-American twist, and this is a must-see for all fans of wolves.
Rating: 5 stars.
Balto - Wings of Change
This sequel features Balto's son, Kodi, who is from the puppy litter we met in Wolf Quest. Kodi loves his new job carrying the mail to and from Nome. He, like all the other dogs, sees Balto as Nome's hero.
Suddenly, the dogs lose their jobs when a pilot, named Duke, takes over the role of carrying the mail. The dispute is settled when there is a race between the dogsled and the plane. The dogs win - and Duke and his plane don't come back. Being a good friend to him, Balto knows something is wrong, and sets out to look for Duke.
There's also a comical sub-plot with Boris and a lady goose called Stella, which is downright hillarious.
Humans and dogsled are found here, but what about wolves? The people who think this is better than Wolf Quest don't realise is that the wolf element is what made Balto so special in the first place. Apart from that, it is a great film, and funnier than first expected.
Rating: 4 stars.
All in all, a great set of mature family films. Perhaps not for very young children, but still great. I highly recommend them.

Balto.......2007-06-12
After having moved up to Alaska for the summer, I had a huge craving to see an old, lovable movie. And that was Balto.
And i wasn't disappointed :D I love this movie.
the goose talks!!.......2007-05-12
hey this movie was great ..
i had never even heard of Balto.. hubby told me that it is a great movie that he saw a long time ago..
he was right .. it was great
It's a cartoon, not a documentary.......2007-04-18
'Anyone familiar with the Iditarod and why it is run will be highly disappointed with this cartoon's portrayal. There is too much cartoon hoo-haa and not enough substance.'
It's a cartoon, and is therefore not guaranteed to be 100% historically accurate. If you want accuracy, watch a documentary, although I doubt it would have the same impact. I mean, geese don't talk do they? If this film respected the original story, then it would be far less interesting. If only more viewers could see this.
Does not do the story justice........2007-04-09
