It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
This Baby Einstein Highly Recommended for Parrots and their Parents ;).......2007-09-14
Upon the recommendation of a friend who uses Sesame Street with her parrots with good results, I decided to look around for some "learning" type dvd's for toddlers. I decided I did not want to go with Sesame Street for a few reasons, first of all, I can't stand that annoying "children's music" and I sure as heck didn't want our sweet little African Grey boy picking up on any of that. ;) Also, I don't see the point in dvd's that feature a lot of humans for educating and entertaining parrots. Baby Einstein's Baby Mozart was a perfect choice that met all of our criteria: lack of humans (just a couple of hands and a short clip of a human baby at the end), beautiful classical music, brilliant colors and interesting objects.
Greys tend to be a bit neurotic, and my little boy has a bad habit of screaming and biting his nails whenever I have to leave the room if he is not allowed to shoulder constantly. Baby Einstein Mozart held his attention and entertained him very well starting the first night we used it! I'd say this is a very good product for reducing stress with a Grey.
Frequent repetition of this DVD is the key to getting, and holding the attention of a Grey, in our experience. I set it on repeat and let it loop over and over again and I suggest you do the same if you get this for your parrot. Remember, dvd's aren't babysitters, the parrot will learn best if you are actively involved in the dvd watching with him/her at least some of the time.
The best thing about this video, other than being really effective with our little parrot boy, is that it's not at all annoying for the parrot parents! Even looped over and over again, it will not drive you mad.
My Babies Love It.......2007-09-06
My twin 4 month old boys are mesmerized watching this video. My husband and I wish we thought of it as it is still a wonder to us that it is such a successful video. However, the babies love it and that's what matters. I'd give it 5 stars based on the babies' thoughts but not mine and my husband's. After a while, you'll find yourself watching along.
My daughter loved the series.......2007-08-14
My daughter watched these when she only 4 months old until 3. She is now turning 6 years old. Is she any smarter for watching them, not sure but she is reading at a 3rd grade level. Did the fact that she watched them turn her into a mindless dud - NO WAY! Sure - people can come on here and rate the videos 1 star and say the pediatric blah blah blah says no TV under 2 but we all know that parents who take their time to pick out a few pieces of video for their kids under 2 are doing no wrong. What is the difference of putting a child under a mobile to sit and stare at then a video that plays music, shows mobiles, other kids, shiny toys, pieces of art, colors, numbers, shapes and nature? TV can be a very educational tool for your kids if used with the right shows/video and for a small amount of time each day. I would never sit my child in front of the TV playing mindless cartoons and I sure wouldn't let her watch 90% of the junk on most "kid" networks but when she was younger I would allow one video a day which equals 30min. They allowed my husband and I to enjoy occasional dinners together, it allowed my daughter to relax after a hard day of running in the playgrounds and most of all we would all sit around at night on occasion and learn from them. My daughter barely watches TV now because she is a reader and intrigued from many other things but when she was younger and couldn't do a lot on her own, those 30min where a blessing to all.
I highly recommend, Bach, Mozart, Van Gogh and Baby Santa as the 4 favs.

Baby Einstein is a Scam.......2007-05-27
Be a genius, don't fall for the alluring proposition that this will make you child any more cultured or intelligent. There are no studies or otherwise to prove anything that these videos claim.

"The baby video industry is a scam. There's no evidence that the videos are educational for babies, and a review of the research on babies and videos concludes that while older babies can imitate simple actions from a video they've seen several times, they learn much more rapidly from real life."

Content great, format too high-tech........2006-03-21
Although I thoroughly enjoy the music on Pavarotti & Friends For War Child, I could not play the CD as purchased on either of my CD players because it was in a 5.1 format. A friend copied it onto a disc I can play.
I feel that CD's purchased through your company should be in formats able to be used be the masses, instead of a select few that are able to have state-of-the-art machinery.
Other than that, I am extremely happy with your service (I was a first-time buyer), and with the CD as a whole. Thanks.
An all-star presentation of life and survival!.......1999-07-12
Pavarotti and Friends for War Child is the second but not the last, of Pavarotti's efforts to make visible that which we would prefer to ignore. From his opening prayer of Holy Mother, he pleads for compassion. Eric Clapton's blues-trained voice melds effortlessly and makes us also want redemption and grace. Interestingly placed on the same theme is Joan Osborne's St Teresa. Joan sings of looking from the depths of desolation to a possible savior. Euro-pop tunes featured are poignant studies in our humanity and most are worth our listening. Pavorotti's collection ends with Live Like Horses-- Elton John's tribute to the life of Versace. He asks that we kick down our fences and move on! to live free and noble as does our equine friend. Thank you Pavarotti. Your wisdom and far-reaching voice beacons and then gently educates us. Our lives-- as the War Child's, WILL continue and evolve.

These are wonderful!!!.......2004-11-02
The person with the 2 separate negative ratings (1 star) is absolutely nuts!!! Maybe someone should tell them that you can't just sit your child in front of the t.v. for hours on end by themself to watch these. These dvd's are not meant to be babysitters!
I have 13 of the baby einstein dvd's, 6 of the cd's and 4 of the books! My 10 month old daughter adores each and every one of them. They are very fun, musical, colorful and a great way to introduce your child/ren to different things. Great learning tools for you to watch/listen to with your child. I would recommend these to anyone with children!!
A very satisfied customer!
Life Saver.......2004-08-31
My 18mos old twins have loved these videos since they were 6mos old. They have allowed me and my husband to have a quiet dinner, an otherwise rare event! The twins watch them over and over again and are incredibly captivated every time. They are truly a life saver when you need a moment of time to yourself.
These are great dvds! To each it's own!.......2004-07-16
This last two people were the same people. They're great dvds, just some babies may not like them. All of my kids, and my neigbhors kids all LOVE them! They will not cause your child any long term damage, that is just assinine.
A lot of babies love this dvd. My 2 year old triplet's and 6 month old STILL watch them for 1/2 hours and more so I can do real work around the house.
My Baby sister cries when she sees this! It sux!.......2004-05-24
These DVD's are a complete waste of money! My sister pays no attention to them, she chews on the "shiny" disks and points to the cheap toys on the cover complaining she doesn't have them. I donated the disks to the Good Will for some other cheeseball to buy them. If you buy these you will go nuts and maybe even get so pissed, you crack the disks engaging your son/daughter into some dangerous activity. I hope you use this info wisely, and interact with your child/sibling instead of forcing them to watch the dumbest DVD ever. You and your child will eventually thank me for interacting with your child future. If you listen, to my review, you are improving the liklihood of your kid to be successful in life! Thanx!
IS TV BAD.......2004-03-16
I HAVE A 7 MONTH OLD SON AND I HAVE PURCHASED A FEW BABY EINSTEIN VIDEOS WORLD ANIMALS NEIGHBORHOOD ANIMALS AND BABY NEPTUNE. I TOO HAVE READ THE WEBSITE ONE OF YOUR REVIEWERS HAD WRITTEN ABOUT . IT DOES NOT STATE THAT WATCHING TV IS BAD FOR CHILDREN UNDER 2 IT STATES THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ENOUGH RESEARCH DONE AND IT IS NOT RECCOMENDED. THE REVIEWER SUGGESTS A MOMMY'S DAY OUT PLAY GROUP,THERE IS NOTHING OF THE SORT IN OUR AREA. I ALSO AGREE WITH CHILD INTERACTION,HOWEVER I WON'T UNLESS IT IS ABSOLUTLY NECESSARY BE LEAVING MY SON IN THE HANDS OF A PLAYGROUP FOOLING MYSELF INTO THINKING THAT IT WILL BE BETTER THAN A HALF AN HOUR OF INTERACTING WITH ME AND BABY NEPTUNE. MY SON LOVES THE COLORS SHAPES OTHER BABIES ETC,AND HE IS SAFE IN HIS OWN HOME. I AM NOT A LAZY MOTHER I PLAY WITH MY SON ALL DAY AS I WORK NIGHTS. I TOO TAKE HIM TO PLAY WITH OTHER KIDS POINT OUT THINGS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD ETC..... AND SOMETIMES GO ON LITTLE SLEEP SO HE DOES NOT HAVE TO GO TO A SITTER. I AM VERY FORTUNATE FOR A SCHEDULE THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS. SO FOR ALL THOSE MOMS OUT THERE WHO ARE USING THESE VIDEOS AS A TOOL TO LEARN AND BEING THERE WATCHING THE VIDEO WITH YOUR BABY I APPLAUD YOU. YOU TOOK THE EFFORT TO DO RESEARCH READ THESE REVIEWS AND TRY TO DO THE BEST FOR YOUR BABY,AFTER ALL NOTHING IN MODERATION IS BAD,I HAVE HEARD OF PLAYGROUPS GOING TO MCDONALDS,IS THERE NO END TO THE CRITISISM? IN ADDITION AT 6MONTHS MY SON HAD A FOUR WORD VOCABULARY 8 TEETH AND CAN GET HIMSELF OUT OF HIS OWN CARSEAT!! AND HE WATCHES 1/2 HOUR OF BABY EINSTEIN PER DAY. THANK YOU BABY EINSTEIN!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
ok maybe for a younger child to send them off to sleep.......2007-02-26
This one is ok but it seems to not be able to keep their attention for long, I much prefer the interactive Baby Genius videos that the kids are all involved with singing and dancing, like Childrens Favorite Songs, and Childrens Favorite Nursery Rhymes.
Not the best DVD.......2004-12-23
I was disappointed in this DVD. I really didn't want to compare it to the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart DVD, but it's impossible not to. The images on this Baby Genius DVD stay on the screen for longer periods of time and they tend to be more pastel rather than primary. Also, on the Genius DVD, there are images of animals (a brown squirrel running around on brown grass - which makes no sense to me since babies are stimulated by bright colors) and children who really aren't doing anything that entertaining or interesting. I really prefer the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart DVD because the images are brighter, they rotate in shorter periods of time (keeping my son's interest piqued), and the hand puppets and toys shown are just generally better and more interesting than the Baby Genius DVD. If you're looking to get a DVD and can't decide between Baby Genius and Baby Einstein, go with the Einstein.

This is my triplets' favorite video! The pace is of the graphics is good for babies and toddlers and the music is enjoyable even for adults.
gentle video is ideal background during child's play-time.......2006-02-09
Unlike some videos which seem to have a frenetic MTV pace to them, 'Jazz Baby Jazz' offers a gentler pace, which I believe is more appropriate for young children. The video presents colorful animated graphics (animals, cars, bouncing balls, etc.) interspersed with live action footage of babies and toddlers playing with toys.
We've played this video in the background when our 10-month old is playing with his toys. He tends to look up at the TV periodically, and if he catches one of the clips of another child, it holds his attention for 10-20 seconds. Generally, though, he isn't too interested in the animated graphics. He'll look for a few seconds and then return to what he's doing. Some might think the video isn't so good if it can't hold his attention. But I argue the opposite. Any video that turns a kid into a glassy-eyed zombie who can't look away from the images should be destroyed. So I really appreciate the fact that this video offers something of a slower pace, that allows my child to watch for a little while, but then lets him get back to his business. (Of course, we rarely ever have the TV on--generally it's just for movies after the kid goes to bed--so perhaps he hasn't had time to be zombified.)
It's also nice that the images are accompanied by a hip jazzy soundtrack. I want my boy to be musical. Oh, sure--the Baby Mozart and Baby Bach and Baby Mike Oldfield and all the other classical selections are probably great for kids, but come on--let's have some variety! Jazz, baby.

"Mozart Babies" is a must for parents with little ones!.......2001-01-22
I love the classical Mozart music. My little ones love to watch the babies dance and play, and the music is more beneficial to them than the usual "kid tunes".
A refreshing change.
Amazon.com
Based on research that classical music enhances a baby's brain development, Mozart and Friends is a medley of classical compositions coupled with engaging real-life and animated visuals. A piano rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" accompanies a dazzling host of moon and stars dancing across the screen. In another scene, musical instruments are suspended alongside orchestral notes; later, a bouquet of balloons soars in the sky. Color patterns and object sequencing are introduced by way of bright building blocks; puzzle pieces show spatial relationships--all of which, experts say, cause tiny synapses in a child's brain to make critical connections. This, of course, matters not to kiddies who merely delight in the interspersed scenes of babies and animals at play. A superb soundtrack of various composers is the only narrative in the 37-minute program; there are no added voiceovers or recitations. Less stimulating than other infant development videos, this calming program is suitable for toddler quiet time. Ages 9 to 36 months. --Lynn Gibson

My Baby Loves It & I Think It's Great!.......2007-01-01
I found this DVD at my local Dollar General store for $3 brand new. My baby is watching it right now. She is 4 months old and loves it. I enjoy the music. It keeps her so engaged that I can get some things done, or just some much needed relaxing time for myself. I'm a former school teacher and think this video is great for stimulating her brain as well. It's so enjoyable to watch her eyes light up as she watches this video and hear her giggle at the babies in the video.
Fantastic!.......2006-04-21
We have had great success with the Baby Genius videos. Our experience was quite different than those who have listed negative reviews above - so we'll chalk such different experiences up to the fact that everyone is unique, therefore we encourage anyone with an infant to give these videos a try. These are the only videos our first son (who is now 4 1/2 years old)would actually be interested in watching when he was an infant/toddler (between 6 months to 2 years). Although everyone learns at a different pace, our son was reading simple words by the time he was 3 years old and now, at 4 1/2, can probably read as well as any 7 or 8 year old we know. We attribute his ability to read so early and so well to his God-given gift, all of the time we spent interacting with him (making fun games out of words, etc.), and these videos. We would always watch the videos with him - and we would interact with him (i.e. when he was about 1 1/2 years old, we would play games with the video regarding what colors he saw, what letters and numbers he could recognize, etc). We believe the interaction while wacthing the videos was a critical step in his quick learning ability. We have just introduced the videos to our 6 month old and he seems to like the sounds, colors, and sights as well. Anyway, we wish you the best with your children and hope that your experience with the videos will be as pleasant and rewarding as ours was (and hopefully will be with our newest son).
Poor video.......2005-11-07
A friend gave this to me. The first time we watched it was when my daughter was about 6 months. She wasn't impressed and neither was I (although I do enjoy the music). I decided to add it to the rotation of Baby Einstein and Curious Buddies that we have - for which my daughter, now 19 months, is glued to the TV. It came up today and after 2 minutes she was off playing with toys and had no interest whatsoever. Sorry my friend wasted her money. It's going in the donation box.
Wonderful reinforcing tool!.......2004-03-07
I picked up the VHS version of this as a previously viewed tape at a local video rental store thinking it would be nice as a break from Telletubbies, Dora and the like. I was very supprised when it quickly became the favorite in our media library! While I agree that the program does not overtly teach the alphabet & etc... However, it has held my little one's attention from about the age of 6 months through the 3 1/2 yrs that my daughter is at now. (She still loves it!) My daughter now says the alphabet while it is appearing on screen. So while I don't believe that it is a good teaching tool, it does reinforce! (I would rather teach the children myself anyway!) I have recently obtained the DVD version of this and am pleased that the parent's intro has moved to the end on the DVD.
Images Don't Relate To Music.......2003-07-22
The Baby Genious video is very low quality compared to the two Baby Einstein videos I own. First, the Baby Genious Mozart and Friends music track is muffled, and is no better than just playing a random mozart CD, then randomly placing images on the screen. For example, a number sequence from zero to nine slowly appears on the screan, but not in sync with the music. Then the music track ends and starts anew even though the numerical sequence has not completed.
Some of the camera work is shaky, and appears as if it were photographed by amatures. The editing is random, again not in sequence with the music.
The images are poor. Imagine a still picture of the sky, then two-dimensional drawings of ballons floot by the screen. The images are not interesting -- and their movements are computer generated, again not related to the music.
All I can say is that my child's attention is not maintained by the Baby Genious Mozart and Friends video. I suggest getting the Baby Einstein videos because their music, editing and production values are far superior. Further, the Baby Einstein videos use puppets and real images.
Happy parenting.
