Customer Reviews:
Bartok Rules!.......2007-09-16
I saw this movie in the theater and instantly loved it. Great songs, great story, great characters. And, of course John Cusack. But, above all Bartok the bat steals the show. I love bats and this one is albino and Russian. He is the slave pet of Rasputin, what couldn't you love about this movie?
A Personal Favorite.......2007-09-08
I never saw this movie as a kid- since "The Little Mermaid" was being shown in theaters at the same time this was, I opted for that film.
However, finally watching this movie as a teenager I really wish I had seen it on th widescreen.
We have the tale of Anya- a "nobody" as she puts it, without a real name, past or family. Her only clue? A necklace with the words "Together In Paris" enscribed on it.
It's a beautifuly done movie, breathtaking animation- how can you NOT get shivers up and down your spine during the "Once Upon A December" scene? I know I can't. Rasputin in the cartoon looks rather like his historical counterpart, very, very creepy. I rather enjoyed how they made him "Undead" as in real life he was VERY hard to kill. (I don't remember HOW many times they attempted to kill Rasputin.)
Other than Rasputins looks, and several smaller details, the movie is largely historically unaccurate, but wonderful nontheless.
My one complaint? Sometimes Don's animation goes.... funny when he's trying to animate humans from a particular point of view. It could be just me, but I think he has that problem in ALL his animated films. (With the possible exception of "Titan AE")
Either way, add this to your collection. You won't be dissapointed.
It's Not Disney? Who Would Have Guessed.......2007-09-03
When this movie first came out, I was very young. I saw it once and was afraid of Rasputin, making me not want to see it again. (I have never been a fan of anything scary, so most cannot go by me.) When I was going through my video cabinet recently, I dug the movie out, trying to remember why I had only seen it once. I put it into the VCR and the from the beginning of the film to the end, the magic never once ceased. Though it isn't exactly historically accurate, it had a happy ending and a great story line. At first my friends and family thought it was crazy that I watched this animated movie over and over, but once they saw it, they had to admit that it was a great movie for all ages. I wouldn't recommend younger children to see this, it can be frightening at the end, though I won't say why. Anastasia and Dimitri's relationship was so realistic, I found myself relating people I know to them. It was absolutely fabulous!
Love it!.......2007-08-31
This is the best movie-my 2 year old loves it and wants to watch it everyday. She has all the songs from the movie memorized and sings them all the time so I had to buy the CD soundtrack too.
Has the sumptuous look of a Broadway musical...top entertainment..........2007-07-29
Some of the most beautiful animation and backgrounds in recent history are a central ingredient of "Anastasia", a charming full-length feature based on the famous title character and set against the period of the Russian revolution. Expert vocal work by Angela Lansbury (Dowager Empress), Meg Ryan (Anastasia), John Kusack (Dimitri) and many others, make the characters seem more dimensional than in most animated features. Particularly Dimitri and Anastasia, whose love-hate relationship seems startlingly real given the superb animation.
The score is studded with some Oscar-nominated music and the sinister moments have the kind of villain you love to hate (Rasputin). Some of the scenes might be too intense for small children--as well as a realistic railway scene on a runaway car--but all in all, should delight young and old. Angela Lansbury's voice is especially effective as the Empress. The art of animation doesn't get any better than this! This Don Bluth/Gary Goldman production is as good as anything Disney might have attempted.

In his book, Robert C. O'Brien called his brave widow mouse "Mrs. Frisby," but Disney escapee animator Don Bluth must have thought kids would laugh the wrong way at that. They renamed her "Mrs. Brisby" for NIMH. That acronym stands for the National Institute of Mental Health, and the rats that live near Mrs. Brisby came from NIMH--they have strange ways. But they're the only ones who can save her house and her children, so Brisby seeks them out with the help of a humorous crow (Dom DeLuise). The magic gets laid on a little thick but this is Don Bluth's most successful attempt to achieve a complete, sincere, animated film. It's often forgotten, but it's a true surprise and a rare treat in the vast wasteland of insubstantial children's fare. --Keith Simanton
Description
Get ready to meet some runaway rodents with an earth-shattering secret! Suspenseful and heartwarming, this beautifully animated odyssey stars Mrs. Brisby, a mild-mannered mother mouse with a plan to move Heaven and Earth (or at least her house and home) to save her family from Farmer Fitzgibbon's plow! Along the way she gets some help from a lovelorn Crow, a busybody neighbor mouse and a fearsome Great Owl. Unfortunately, Mrs. Brisby will need an engineering miracle to hoist her home, and for that she must face a mysterious rat, fend off a ferocious cat and claim a magic amulet! But when Mrs. Brisby discovers the astounding secret of NIMH...it could change her life forever! This timeless tale of love, courage and determination will transport the whole family into an enchanting world where the bravest hearts live in the meekest of mice.
Customer Reviews:
don't waste your time..........2007-08-21
I read the book, "The Rats Of NIMH", and it was amazing! Now, I'm not a Sci-Fi person, but it WAS great. But the movie probably had 4 things related to the book.
Things different-
In the book, she is Mrs. Frisby, NOT BRISBY.
In the book, Jenner just disagrees with the plan and quits, he is not EVIL!
There is no amulet/gem thing in the book.
THERE IS NO MAGIC, JUST SMART RATS!!!!!
This movie was a complete WASTE of my time. If you have never read the book, and never will, ENJOY!
Now if you excuse me, I'm going to have a nice time reading one of my favorite books, Mrs. Frisby And The Rats Of NIMH.
Great movie and wonderful way to teach children about respect for animals.......2007-07-27
I bought this for myself as an adult, so I don't have the 2-disc version. But my daughter asks for the movie (now that I'm a mom) and I love it more now than I did as a child. This could very well have been a motivator in making me a vegetarian in my teens.
The story teaches children about love and respect, the importance of family, inner strength and a little message about treating animals with kindness and compassion. LOVE THIS MOVIE! The plot is seamless and great for all ages. Well, some scarier parts might be a bit much for a toddler, but my daughter has watched this since around age 2 and was never too scared to continue.
Enjoy!
Finally a widescreen version of N.I.M.H. .......2007-07-02
I have no quarrel with the quality of this Widescreen version on DVD; it looks beautiful and sounds great. Having said all that, I have no idea why 20th Century Fox released it on 2-discs, other than to jack up the price. For that reason I am giving it a grade of only 4 stars, even though the film deserves 5 stars.
Disc One contains the feature with audio commentary. Disc Two has a 15 minute Making Of featurette and six games for children. The theatrical trailer was not included. All the information on Disc Two would have easily fit on Disc One with room left over for much more.
I'll stop complaining now and enjoy the film...
Scary, but worth it!.......2007-07-02
I remember watching this movie as a kid. I was scared, but it's worth a rewatch anytime. It's not a movie that anyone under 6 should watch (there are heavy topics of death, experiments on the mice and the ocassioanl "d" word) but a great cartoon nonetheless that has withstood the test of time.
Awesome remaster.......2007-07-01
I saw this movie when I was a child which when I was 6. This one though was a very good redesign and re-mastering of the movie. Bluth took out Alot of the noise and artifacts of the movie. has a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound along with a commentary from Bluth himself. as a result this is a great DVD to have if you enjoy the movie Alot. This was supposed to be a HD type quality but I wasnt sure if it is or not because Im looking at this on my PC which has a GeForce 8800GTX with PUREVideo system integrated. which supposidly gets rid of the noise on movies. Overall a good DVD to get

Finally, Special Features.......2004-10-28
When rating this DVD, I consider three factors:
1. Cover Art --- Very nice picture of Arthur and D.W., although the coloring is a little dark. The pictures throughout the DVD box and DVD menus are also pretty nice.
2. Story Selection --- I wouldn't say these stories are among the best of the "Arthur" series, but they're not too bad. In "D.W.'s Time Trouble," D.W. and Nadine go back in time to see what it would be like if D.W. were the older sibling. Some very amusing stuff here with the "baby store" and some touching moments with Arthur and D.W. Next, there's "To Tibble the Truth," in which the Tibbles learn that telling the truth is good, but you shouldn't be bluntly honest. This story uses Alberto and Vicita, two new characters introduced in more recent seasons of the show. Finally, "Waiting to Go" riffs off of the existential play "Waiting for Godot." Very interesting dynamic of Binky and Brain, two very unalike characters. Some intriguing discussion of relativity and other stuff that likely will go straight over the heads of most of the target audience.
3. Special Features --- Hmm, mmm. It's nice that "Arthur" DVDs now have special features, but most of this is just stuff transplanted from the official website. There's a read-along of "Arthur's Family Feud" that I know I've seen on the site before. I guess this fits in with the "getting along" theme. There are also parent tips from the site. Probably the best special feature is actually a cute show preview for "Connie the Cow." There are also previews for a few shows that used to be on the PBSKids "Bookworm Bunch." This is also the first one of the first "Arthur" DVDs to feature continuous play. One other thing of note is that the close-caption track has been removed and replaced by larger white subtitles without any blackground. I don't mind this, since they're easier to read and don't have any accuracy problems.
