The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars For Once, Disney Did a Fairy Tale Right........2007-09-15

There a lot of Disney films based off of fairy tales; Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid to name a few. While, Cinderella and Snow White remain favorites to this day, Beauty and the Beast is probably the only one that is consistently funny, has good songs, and a great cast of characters.

If one has not seen "Beauty and the Beast", the basic story goes: Belle is a bookish woman who doesn't fit in, but as her name suggest, her beauty is unparalleled. Her father is an eccentric inventor and is trying to become a famous inventor. When he stumbles across the Beast's castle, he is on the way to an inventor's contest, and then he is imprisoned by the Beats who is incapable of love. This is a very touching film because the Beast is a man who has never learned to love, and Belle has a hard time loving someone who would imprison her or her father, but eventually as time goes by, she begins to see that he is not as bad as he seemed. It gives wonderful message that you cannot always judge someone based upon their looks, and sometimes you just need to really know a person before you can decide whether or not they are worth knowing - despite first impressions.

Admittedly I had not watched "Beauty and the Beast" since it came out, until recently, and I had forgotten that it is more than a children's film. The story is very predictable, but is filled with so much fabulous music, characters with actual depth, and beautiful animation it overshadows the story. This movie has the perennial heroine that all the other Fairy Tale Disney movies have. Yet, this is the only Disney movie that gets the female lead right. She's smart, sassy (not bratty), beautiful, and can take care of herself. She doesn't desire the best looking man which is why Gaston holds no interest for her. She is the kind of woman that I would feel comfortable letting my kids watch in a movie.

The only caution I would give, is that there is mild sexual innuendo most of it is from "Lumiere" (A character reminiscent of Honore Lachaille in 'Gigi') the candlestick. :) However, it is mild, and not blatant or bad enough to deter you from letting your children watch it. It is after all based in France, you have to expect a little bit of that.

Overall, this is one of Disney's crowning achievements, and should be in any one's movie collection!

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2007-08-23

This is up there for the best Disney movie. The animation is astounding, the music, perfect. Its an unforgettable classic that everybody should watch, if they have yet to do so.

5 out of 5 stars A "tale as old as time" breathes new life into Disney.......2007-08-23

This is the film which set the high bar of standards for all other animated films to try to meet. After Disney's success with 1989's "The Little Mermaid", the studio was quickly on the road to recovery after a dismal record of not-so-great productions (anyone remember "The Black Cauldron"?). Then came the masterpiece: "Beauty and the Beast", a handsomely detailed film that's satisfying on all levels of story, animation and music.
How good is it? It's the only animated film (so far) to have received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, so you know that this film lives up to all the hype surrounding it.
This quaint period story begins with Belle, a young woman in a close-minded French town whose people label her "odd" and "loony" for spending her time reading books. Constantly pursued by a swaggering, loutish, narcisstic brute named Gaston to marry him, Belle finds shelter within the pages of her books, expanding her knowledge and imagination. But her life changes forever when her eccentric inventor-father stumbles upon a dark castle while lost in the woods. There, he encounters the hideous, frightening Beast, who imprisons him for trespassing. Belle agrees to remain as a "guest" at the castle in exchange for her father's freedom. As the narrator tells us at the beginning of the film, the Beast was once a handsome prince whose uncaring vanity forced a sorceress to place a powerful curse upon him and his castle, which can only be broken by true love. And there begins the heart of the story, as Belle attempts to reveal the "beauty" within the Beast and forge love & understanding between them (which, of course, turns out to be not-so-easy!).
Robby Benson & Mary Kay Bergman voice the title characters (who would've guessed such a soft-spoken actor as Benson would possess such a powerful lower register?). The supporting cast includes a wide assortment of talking, dancing & singing household items (the Prince's servants transformed under the curse), brought to life by such wonderfully diverse voice talents as Angela Lansbury (Miss Potts), the late Jerry Orbach (Lumiere), and David Odgen Stiers (Cogsworth).
The songwriting team of Ashman & Menken compose a musical score for a Disney film that's the most memorable ever. I dare you not to tap your foot while hearing such tunes as "Be Our Guest" or fall under the spell of the title song.
And the film helped launch Disney into sort of a "renaissance" period as they followed with one great film after another: "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Hercules", "Mulan" and "Tarzan".
Sometimes haunting, sometimes frightening, and often joyous in its imagery & storytelling, "Beauty and the Beast" is Disney at its peak of perfection. No Disney collection would be complete without it!

5 out of 5 stars A masterly musical rendering of the classic story.......2007-08-03

"Beauty and the Beast" is one of the treasures of the Disney catalog.

Anyone who wants to see where great Broadway musicals were being written in the 90s should look at this film. The songs by Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman are masterful.

The classic story is beautifully realised by directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. Beautifully sung and voice-acted by the talented cast. You would have to be hard of heart to not be moved by the finale.

Coming after "The Little Mermaid", the success of this "traditional" animated film inspired the resurgence of the previously moribund animation genre in the 90s, which has continued through until today.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie. EVER........2007-07-19

I grew up on the Disney movies, ranging from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to the Lion King. While both earn my utmost respect, there has always been one that stuck with me in both heart and memory- Beauty and the Beast.

You see, I'm 19 now, almost 20 and this is one movie I've always cherished since childhood. When the narration begins about the Prince, goes to the title, and on, the movie hooks me into a realm of fantasy and romance.

While I'm not too big on romance stories in book form, Disney does it right in this film. A raging, yet sorrow-filled beast who secretly falls in love with a strong-willed woman. First off, they don't like each other, but the relationship blossoms and grows up to where they fight for each other- this is true love in its purest form.

I admit with pride, that I cry at certain scenes, mostly the Transformation scene at the end of the film. The music is lively, the acting is superb, and the memories that remain in my heart are fond.

Parents, please, please, PLEASE show this film to your children- I firmly believe that they, like myself and many others will fall in love with this film, and many other Disney classics. I give Beauty and the Beast 10 out of 10 Stars. This is my favorite film of all eternity. EVER.

Though set in the late-1980s, Beauty and the Beast plays like something from another era. There's no irony, cynicism, or hip quips to break the spell of the fantasy (though a little humor would've been nice). Catherine (Linda Hamilton) loves the beastly, if beneficent Vincent (Ron Perlman) with all her heart--and vice versa. Together, they're TV's most soft-hearted crime fighters. To the show's credit, however, they aren't infallible, and there are a few problems they're unable to solve, whether the issue is drug addiction ("Chamber Music"), infectious disease ("Ashes, Ashes" with Highlander's Adrian Paul), or murder ("The Hollow Men").

In retrospect, it's clear that Beauty and the Beast was a reaction to the "greed is good" era. Vincent and his cave-dwelling compatriots represent a more compassionate alternative to "topsider" corruption. Yet all is not harmonious below either. Seriously injured the previous year, Paracelsus (Tony Jay) becomes a Phantom of the Opera-type figure, who aims to destroy Vincent's candle-lit utopia. In addition, a less civilized group of outcasts arrives in "The Outsiders." Fortunately, Vincent has Father (Roy Dotrice), Mary (Ellen Geer), Mouse (David Greenlee), and Pascal (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Armin Shimerman) on his side.

Unfortunately, they won't be able to prevent the tragedy that occurs in "The Rest Is Silence." Suffice to say, the season finale sets the scene for a new direction (more is revealed in the third-season opener). Consequently, Beauty and the Beast was canceled the following year, but still managed to rack up 18 Emmy nominations (winning six), spawning a soundtrack, and even inspiring some Saturday Night Live spoofing--a sure sign it had struck a chord. While the first season was devoid of extras, Perlman and Hamilton introduce six key episodes on this set. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description

The Beauty and the Beast TV show was a fantasy series about a man-beast (Vincent) and his love for a beautiful assistant district attorney (Catherine Chandler). Vincent lived in an underground world beneath New York City where his gruesome looks were less important to his peers than were his caring and benevolent personality. Together, Vincent and Catherine had many adventures both above and below ground level and their love for each other continued to grow.

5 out of 5 stars The Loveliest Story Ever Told Gets More Lovelier!.......2007-09-13

So far I have only seen two episodes of the second season and I am so impressed with the exploration into the darker side of the world around lovers Catherine Chandler, the tough assistant DA of New York, and the gentle yet protective Vincent.

Raw emotion is presented as Catherine and Vincent "begin" their official relationship-- going to concerts by hiding near drainage pipes, planning vacations to isolated spots, dreaming of things that seem possible but just aren't. Meanwhile, they're still trying to save the people around them from immpossible situations while being there for each other.

I like that the fact that in this season (so far) there are no neat and tidy endings and sometimes love cannot truly conquer all (example being the first episode, "Chamber Music.") In all aspects of this, Catherine and Vincent's strong love for each other still shines and actually makes them stronger as a couple. They come to realize that sometimes you can't really help someone, but you can let them know you're there. That, in itself, is more than needed.

The cinematography is terrific and the dialogue, while poetic and lyrical, fills the story with flavor and provides art through the tough stories. I still love Catherine; I'm still in love with Vincent. My only complaint is that this series didn't last any longer than three. But, it's a beautiful journey all in all, and I hope you dare to take it.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-08-25

This was my favorite tv series of all time. I now have two seasons and am waiting for more. It was recieved when promised and in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best ever on TV. .......2007-08-22

I am really crazy for this series. From the pilot to its untimely end, I hardly ever missed an episode of this remarkable series. The 1st Season was a cut above ordinary TV--but the 2nd Season--truly magnificent. The episodes that I recall as really memorable such as 'Orphans', or 'Brothers' are inspirational. But what I really am captivated by are the trilogy that end the 2nd Season. Beginning with 'What Rough Beast', continuing with Ceremony of Innocence', and then ending the season with 'The Rest is Silence' we come to the conclusion that this was no ordinary series---this is dramatic Literature, plain and simple!
I highly recommend this DVD from Beauty and the Beast 2nd Season. It will rarely disappoint!

"Once upon a time... in the city of New York." So begins this unique fantasy-crime series. Catherine (Emmy nominee Linda Hamilton, The Terminator) is an assistant DA who's attacked one night by strangers. When she wakes up, her face is covered in bandages. Someone named Vincent (Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman) has been taking care of her in his home beneath the subway. When she removes the dressing, she finds that he's a man-beast, but fear turns to trust when she becomes convinced he has her best interests at heart. As she states in the introduction, "We have a bond stronger than friendship or love." As the season unfolds, Vincent frequently comes to Catherine's assistance. As an empath, he knows instinctively when she's in trouble. When he needs help, Vincent turns to Father (Roy Dotrice), the doctor who raised him after he was abandoned at the hospital after he was born. His origins are unknown. Together, Catherine and Vincent are like the detectives of Remington Steele, except no one knows she's part of a team, since they're only able to meet in secret. Vincent's underground companions, however, get to know Catherine well. Just as Vincent comes to her aid as needed, she does the same for his community.

Although Beauty and the Beast has little in common with the Jean Cocteau film or Disney animated picture, the appeal is similar. Cynics may find these do-gooders sentimental, especially when Catherine utters lines like, "And although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart." But romantics made the CBS drama successful--at least until Hamilton left in the second year--and launched the Emmy-nominated Perlman into cult favorites like The City of Lost Children. Oscar winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London) also deserves credit for his convincing make-up effects. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars My favorite love story becomes a lovely series.......2007-08-17

I was four years old when this show came out (I actually remember the commercials!) and I got around to renting it on Netflix because Beauty and the Beast is all all time favorite story.

Maybe it's the sappy romantic in me, but this show makes me feel like there's magic in the air. The unconvential couple (Linda Hamilton as assistant DA Catherine Chandler, and the awesome Ron Perlman as the lionesque Vincent) moves from an impenetrable castle to the upscale New York life and the secret, underground tunnels below, where Vincent and his "family" make their home.

As the story goes, this contemporary beauty and the intelligent beast fall in love but can't be together (and they really can't, what with Vincent looking the way he does). This setup is masterfully done without being over the top. They don't keep it a secret that they truly love and care for each other or complain that "our love is not meant to be." They pretty much tell that thought to go to heck and stay there.

I adore Catherine-- she's clever, alluring, and can defend herself if put in tough situations (she's a really hands on assistant DA.) She has some pretty funky fashion sense, but all is forgiven when it comes to her cracking cases and putting the bad guys away. Her friendship and deep love for Vincent is refreshing. Linda Hamilton does a stellar job in portraying Catherine. She's a very fine actress- (long live Sarah Connor!)

And Vincent... where do I begin? All I can say is I love him! He's sensitive, bright, protective, naive yet cultured, and he's not against killing anyone who would harm Catherine or his family. When you don't condone someone who does that, you know he's a winner. His innocent yet strong love for Catherine is bittersweet and totally compelling. Ron Perlman has this wonderful ability to bring a favorite character to life--Vincent's a breath of fresh air in a stuffy world of tortured, brooding, whining heroes. More heroes should be like Vincent.

Okay, so some of the quality from the film is in need of series clean up and the part about Vincent being able to sense when Catherine is in trouble is kind of cheesy, but I am totally buying the power of their relationship and the cases which make them stronger.

I don't give five stars out to anything very often, but I will gladly do so with this series.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty & the Beast-Season One.......2007-08-08

this is by far the best in the genre of improbable love stories! Catherine & Vincent share a love, if only in the land of television make believe that people could spend their whole lives searching for. The story & the drama combine for a tremendous hour of escaping what has become unbearable reality!!

5 out of 5 stars bring them back!.......2007-08-04

Here's what I think. Bring Ron and Linda back in a movie and rewrite the ugliness of the series ending into something that sees them stay together and raise their son. Who cares how the old one ended, it could have been a psycotic, drug-induced hallucination that we can see Vincent wake up from to find Catherine and his son safe beside him- why not???? I'll write it. I'm an award-winning, produced, published playwright- working on turning a play of mine into a film with a production company right now. I would so love to see them older, together below with father a grandfather now, dealing with the antics of their child who would be a fractious teen now. What do you think???

Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that theyprotect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

1 out of 5 stars Hellboy Blu-ray.......2007-09-11

Apparently not all machines are capable of playing Blu-ray. None of mine were able to play this disk. Had to reorder.

5 out of 5 stars Great PQ.......2007-08-23

Hellboy's PQ was excellent and the added scenes add to the flow of the movie. Great BD buy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful picture quality.......2007-08-02

I like this movie although I would not say I love it based on the story. I picked it up thinking the picture would be awesome on blue ray. I was not wrong. As another review stated, the blue flames were brilliant. I really noticed the detail on Hellboys face. Sound was great. I noticed alot of sound I did not hear before. It is (or was when I bought it) one of the cheaper films on BRay and it was well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-ray benchmark.......2007-07-12

First off the movie is great especially this directors cut. Secondly, the picture quality and sound quality rivals that of the pirates movies on blu-ray so I would say this is a must purchase for those who like the movie and want to show it off

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Blue Flames!.......2007-07-02

I'm not a big Del Torro fan (Blade II, Pan's Labyrinth), and this movie leaves a little to be desired at times. However, I bought this movie on Blu-ray because I knew it would be a feast for the eyes. I still can't get over how beautiful Selma Blair's character looked consumed in blue flame. Absolutely gorgeous. Hellboy's red skin was awesome. Don't get me wrong. It's not all about the looks. This movie has some great action and cool monsters. It's fun to watch, but it's more fun to watch in 1080p!

I love this movie soo much! If you like action movies you will not be disappointed! The best movie ever!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ron Perlman OWNZ.......2007-06-01

I was surprised how decent this move is. There are a lot of obvious similaities with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The strong point is that Ron Perlman's Hellboy has a ton of personality, that you only see tantalizing flickers of during the rather brisk storyline. Hellboy is your usual smartmouth, rugged toughguy. It's impossible not to think he's cool.

Rasputin is in league with Satan or something, and want's to unleash hell on Earth. He has a stereotypical Nazi chick with a bad accent with him, and a Cyber-Nazi who also can't die. They are all pretty lame villains, although Rasputin looks cool. Selma Blair is enchanting as Liz, the flame girl. For such an underdog Superhero movie, the costume effects are impressive. Abe Sapien is a crazy-looking undersea mer-man or something. Not to sound old (I'm 22), but it's amazing what they can do with face prosthetics. You never doubt for a second that's Hellboy's REAL FACE. This movie is worth at least a look.

5 out of 5 stars Want more Hellboy?.......2007-03-31

So, you've seen the HELLBOY live action movie, and/or the animated material, loved it, and are thirsting for more tales of the red skinned chief investigator of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense? Lucky for you there are several items currently available that should (at least temporarily) quench your thirst.

If you'd like to relive the movie, try the HELLBOY novelization, by Yvonne Navarro. Navarro is an old hand at adapting screen properties, both large and small (she's done several BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER books, plus novelizations of SPECIES I and II) and can be counted on to do so in a readable and entertaining manner. Her work on HELLBOY is no exception. Writing from director Guillermo del Toro's script, and adding in her own little extras based on her intimate knowledge of the source material (she even gets HELLBOY's alternative spelling of "pancakes," substituting "m" for "n", correct), she produces a faithful adaptation of the movie. If you like her HELLBOY book, you might also sample some of Navarro's original novels. Books like AFTERAGE and MIRROR ME (available from The Overlook Connection Press), THAT'S NOT MY NAME, FINAL IMPACT, and RED SHADOWS are all well worth your time and money.

If you wish to explore the comics that inspired the film, there are several reasonably priced HELLBOY collections available from Dark Horse Comics. The movie's main inspiration comes from HELLBOY: SEED OF DESTRUCTION, written and drawn by HELLBOY 's creator, Mike Mignola, with an able assist from the venerable John Byrne of Superman and X-Men fame. HELLBOY: CONQUEROR WORM explores ideas Mignola touched on in SEED OF DESTRUCTION, finally explaining the origins of the strange race of aliens who appeared in that story.

If you like those, you can sample HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL, HELLBOY: THE CHAINED COFFIN, and HELLBOY: THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM. WAKE THE DEVIL is one long story, the other two volumes present several stand alone short stories which explore world mythology and folklore (THE CHAINED COFFIN features "The Corpse", an amusing tale whose events feature prominently in the movie). To see how other folks handle HELLBOY and his eclectic supporting cast, try BPRD: HOLLOW EARTH AND OTHER STORIES, and HELLBOY: WEIRD TALES.

If plain old prose is what floats your boat, there are several worthy original HELLBOY novels, among them HELLBOY: ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HELL by Brian Hodge, HELLBOY: THE GOD MACHINE by Thomas Sniegoski, HELLBOY: UNNATURAL SELECTION by Tim Lebbon, and three by Christopher Golden (of OF SAINTS AND SHADOWS fame), namely HELLBOY: THE LOST ARMY, HELLBOY: THE BONES OF GIANTS, and HELLBOY: THE DRAGON POOL. Golden also ably edited HELLBOY: ODD JOBS, an anthology featuring short stories by the likes of the aforementioned Brian Hodge, Poppy Z. Brite, Nancy Collins, Greg Rucka, and Chet Williamson.

5 out of 5 stars Great super hero movie.......2007-01-30

I really liked this movie. I thought it was a great super hero movie that had some humor built into it. It was well told and the characters were well developed. The special effects were great too!! I am not one for comic book heros, but this one confinced me otherwise. I recommend this movie to anyone that wants to see a good over evil story that was orginally a comic book character.

Charlize Theron is the latest stunning blonde to be hanging around some big ape in a Hollywood movie, this one a remake of the 1949 semi-classic with echoes of the superior King Kong. Theron plays the daugher of an American researcher killed by poachers in Africa. The baby gorilla left in her care grows up to become a hugely tall and broad specimen named Joe, living in the mountains as a mostly unseen legend among people who live there. Along comes an eco-minded emissary (Bill Paxton) from a California sanctuary, who talks the jungle girl into providing safe haven for Joe at the L.A. facility. The transition is not without discomfort, but everything is aggravated via a conspiracy of poachers to get Joe into their own greedy hands. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) uses a combination of special-effects techniques to give Joe life and personality, and he succeeds quite effectively. The requisite giant-ape-goes-amok scenes are all in place--a couple of them pretty intense--as is a conclusion that finds the simian hero performing a stunning feat of escalation. Underwood attempts to give a little modern spin to some classic Hollywood conventions regarding wild hearts lost in civilization, and the results are pretty agreeable family fare. --Tom Keogh

I was amazingly touched by this warm and and tender Love story, and how love has no boundaries. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I could watch it over and over again. This remake is extremely beautifully filmed and Charlize Theron is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Joe Young.......2007-05-09

this is an absolute good movie, some thrills and chills but nothing beats the heartwarming connection between the girl and the gorilla.

4 out of 5 stars Not anything to go ape over........2007-05-07

Believe it or not the only reason I bought Mighty Joe Young
was to see a cameo scene with Ray Harryhaussen in it and Terry
Moore, who played husband and wife. Who are they? Well Miss Moore
was the original lead in the 1949 Mighty Joe Young B&W version and
Ray Harryhaussen was the assistant to Willis O'Brien in the special
effects department....and went on to do his own astounding FX in 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Earth vs The Flying Saucers and many many more.
Now as far as the new version of MJY...it seemed to stick to the
original quite well...even to the scene where Joe saves the child.
Definitely Disneyfied, but nothing surprising as far as plot. I admit
the special effects did impress me, especially when was in the
streets confronting humanity. This would probably be a great addition
for youngsters who believe in a bond between humans and monkeys.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REMAKE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.......2007-03-25

I am a huge Harryhausen fan and an old monster movie lover! So it is hard for me to say that they did a great job on this remake! The effects are incredible and Charlize Theron in perfectly cast(and she's HOT!) The DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras. One of the best remakes ever!

This straight-to-video animated story is set in the Beast's castle which, as viewers know from the original Beauty and the Beast film, is under a spell until the Beast can learn to love. Starting with this familiar premise, Belle's Magical World plummets into three disjointed episodes surrounding Belle's life as a captive in the castle. In "The Perfect World," a misunderstanding of words erupts between Belle and Beast, made worse by a feigned apology. Fifi and Lumiere take the spotlight in "Fifi's Folly," when a romantic evening together becomes a chilling adventure inside a runaway sleigh. In "The Broken Wing," Belle entreats the Beast to act kindly toward a tiny songbird. Each tale offers a diluted moral message, yet the entire effort feels contrived and confusing, a ploy by the folks at Disney to add cash to their coffers by exploiting the popularity of the original motion picture classic. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

3 out of 5 stars I was cheated too..........2007-01-10

Actually I thought was the original motion picture, instead is a serial of short TV style cartoons... my daughter is enjoying them anyway though. I am simply asking why they discontinue the production of the original movie...

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy.......2006-11-12

Wow, this was such a disappointment. For this to be a spinoff of an award-winning movie is just sad. The plot was unimaginative and trite, and the animation was comparable to an "okay" TV cartoon series. We wasted a free rental coupon from Blockbuster on this, and we felt very "ripped off." So definitely don't waste your time buying it.

This is definitely not the Disney version. While it remains faithful to the plot of the classic fairy tale by Leprince de Beaumont, Jean Cocteau's 1946 French romantic fantasy is the product of a sophisticated, mature sensibility in its tones and textures and, above all, in its surprising emotional power. With sparkling black-and-white imagery that, for once, is actually dreamlike rather than cute or kitschy, and with a Beast (Jean Marais) who is almost as glamorous with his silky blonde facial hair as he is clean shaven, the movie casts a seductive spell. It might actually be a little too rich and unsettling for kids. Even the costumes and the draperies are entrancingly ornate. Viewers intoxicated by this enveloping vision should consider moving on to Cocteau's even more aggressively other-worldly 1949 masterpiece Orpheus, in which Marais plays the doomed poet of ancient Greek legend, updated to a Parisian "punk" milieu of motorcycles and black leather. --David Chute

THIS WAS THE FIRST FRENCH FILM OF COCTEAU I EVER SAW. THE PHOTOGRAPY IS SUBPURB, AND THE ACTING ALSO. THIS IS A CLASSIC.

5 out of 5 stars peerless romantic classic.......2007-08-23

Jean Cocteau's LA BELLE ET LA BETE remains one of the benchmark masterpieces in cinema history. Filled with fascinating camera tricks and exquisite performances, it's a magical movie for all ages.

Based on the immortal fairytale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, the story plays out more or less in the way most people are familiar with. The selfless Belle (Josette Day) agrees to live in the castle of a hideous Beast (Jean Marais) after her father steals a white rose from his enchanted garden. The Beast's only request is to watch her nightly during dinner; Belle is given all the freedom she wishes, yet she may never step beyond the palace borders. When Belle is granted the chance to visit her sick father, the Beast gives her the key to his vault of riches as a token of his trust that she'll return. When her siblings discover the key, they steal it away for their own selfish ends. Belle returns just as the Beast is in his death throes, finally realising how much she loves him.

LA BELLE ET LA BETE should be compulsive viewing for any serious movie fan; lovers of fairytale cinema will adore it too. Josette Day is just like a porcelain doll come to life, impossibly beautiful with a mane of long blonde hair and costumed in some of the most ornate and beautiful gowns. Jean Marais handles the role of the Beast well (and also gets to play Belle's unwanted admirer Avenant). The film also features well-judged performances from Mila Parely, Nane Germon, Michel Auclair, and Marcel Andre.

Jean Cocteau's inspired vision was later the basis for the "Faerie Tale Theatre" version starring Susan Sarandon and Klaus Kinski; the 1990 animated Disney musical also adopted some of the thematic elements (particularly the 'Enchanted Objects'). They all pale beside the true classic...LA BELLE ET LA BETE.

5 out of 5 stars Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast.......2007-06-21

The premise of this French fairy tale will be familiar to anyone who's seen the wildly successful and (on its own terms) worthy Disney feature, but this original version by director Jean Cocteau is a more subtle, bewitching and artful rendering of the story. Magic, menace, fantasy and wonder are created through make-up, lighting, and sheer ingenuity of conception. The result is a work of genius, a stunning and surreal masterpiece sure to captivate the child in us all.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of film.......2007-02-26

What an incredible story and film. You almost do not even need the subtitles to follow the story, the acting is that good. Also, the cinematography is remarkable! The special features, which include interviews with surviving actors, and staff are interesting. There is also a short about the making of the film with the special effects used, which were trail blazing at the time.

5 out of 5 stars A sad, magical and lonely Beast; a Beauty of honesty and awakening love. An incomparable film by Jean Cocteau.......2007-01-18

"Don't be a coward; cling to life. You must fight death," Belle pleads with Beast. "Belle, if I were a man," he says, "perhaps I could do as you say. But the poor beasts who want to prove their love can only grovel on the ground and die."

This marvelous film, written and directed by Jean Cocteau, may seem to be a moody retelling of a fairy tale, but it moves much more deeply into the consequences of love, passion and trust. Please note that elements of the plot are discussed. Belle (Josette Day) and her two sisters and brother live with their father, a failing businessman who is about to be ruined. The two sisters are self-centered shrews and the brother is a wastrel. He has a friend, a tall, handsome and vapid fellow who keeps asking Belle to marry him. The father learns his last hope for a business rescue has failed. Returning home from the city, he finds himself in a mist-filled, shadowy forest. He pushes on and then it seems as if the trees are opening a path for him to a huge stone mansion. It appears empty, yet doors open for him. In the hallway he sees candelabra held by living arms. At a table set with food, hands pour wine for him. He drinks and sleeps. When he prepares to leave, still seeing no one, he finds roses growing along a path. He had promised his daughter, Belle, a rose and so he takes one...and immediately is faced with Beast (Jean Marais), covered with fur, menacing and ugly, with sharp teeth and dressed like a prince. Beast says that for taking his rose, the father must either die or send one of his three daughters to live with him. When he returns home, the father finds that his elder two daughters all have reasons not to volunteer. Only Belle says she will gladly go to save her father's life. And off she rides on a huge white horse back to the forest and into the magical home of Beast.

For most of the movie we witness the changing feelings of Belle toward Beast. He is truly a beast. He kills animals in the forest because it is his nature to kill, yet he is lonely to his soul. And Belle discovers he has a soul. In some way she doesn't understand, she is drawn to him. It's not too superficial to say that the Beast is discovering love and that Beauty is discovering a kind of passion which is almost love, not quite pity, and which remains pure because she is honest. They see each other at 7 each evening. He asks the same question as she dines, "Will you marry me?" She begins to look forward to her time with him. Sometimes they'll walk around the mansion's grounds and talk. In time she pleads to return to her home to see her father. Because he loves her, Beast agrees she may go for a week. He will even give her the golden key to all his treasure which will be hers if he dies...and he will die if she doesn't return. The selfishness of her sisters, the greed of her brother and the well-intentioned bravado of his friend all conspire to keep Belle at her father's home. Cocteau eventually gives us a true and tragic joining of two hearts...but also a fairy-tale ending, yet one where we feel sad even as Beauty finds her prince. The Beast has become so sad and complex a figure, so torn by his nature, that we hope there is enough of the Beast in the Prince to keep Beauty interested.

Cocteau has concocted out of a fairy tale a complex and thoughtful look at how the deepest feelings we have about each other can change us. He has created two worlds, the sunny and superficial world of Belle's family and the misty, dark world of Beast, where magic and true feelings can happen. The whole look of the movie is filled with odd and magical scenes...those arms holding the candles and pointing the way, statues and medallions where the faces and the eyes follow Belle, the moment when Belle, unconscious, is carried by Beast into her room and as they pass through the doorway Belle's country clothes are turned into a princesses gown with jewels and pearls, Belle gliding, floating through a hallway as she explores Beast's home. Even the forest, which seemed so threatening when we first entered it with Belle's father, has come to seem much more an expression of Beast's loneliness as well as his nature. All of this has been created by human hands and human ingenuity; there were no computers around to create the effects Cocteau wanted. Knowing this, for me, adds immensely to the magic of the movie. This is not only a wonderful film to own, it's worth watching carefully if you're into how films are made.

The newly restored Criterion edition is superb. If I owned the original Criterion release, I'd be inclined to upgrade.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-31

Of all the versions that I have seen this is about the worst. None of the characters grow and neither do they seem to change as a result of what they go through. Beauty gets used to Beast but is convinced she has to find her Prince. She never really sees the Beast as the Prince or as her true love. From what I saw she agrees to marry Beast out of pity. Forget about the Beauty's family. Every one is self-centered and oblivious to the needs of those around them. Even her father is a lost cause --- all he cares about is the next rainbow and the next possible pot of gold. No wonder his children are rotten. Even Beast himself only sees Beauty as a means to end his curse. There is very little feeling much less love between any of the characters in this movie. I know B&B was originally a fairy tale concerning arranged marriages etc but it has come to be much more than that today. It's about seeing past appearances and first impressions, about finding the beauty inside even a beastly exterior. Sadly there is none of that in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful musical version of the timeless tale.......2007-05-22

This great version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST comes from the fondly-remembered Cannon MovieTales series. Rebecca DeMornay and John Savage star in the lead roles, with lavish costumes and a delicate musical score.

Beauty (Rebecca DeMornay), the youngest daughter of a widowed merchant, spends her days caring and tending to her lazy brothers and sisters. When her father angers the mysterious occupant of a castle, Beauty selflessly offers to live with the hideous Beast (John Savage). Every night, Beauty dreams of a handsome prince who begs her to find him...

This version of the romantic fairytale takes it's cue from the classic 1946 French movie "La Belle et la Bete" (directed by Jean Cocteau) with it's lavish costumes and production design. There are several lovely musical numbers--the main highlight being "If You See with Your Heart", a tender duet for the Beast and a homesick Beauty.

The Cannon MovieTales series was filmed--rather economically--in Israel; you'll note that many of the films feature the same sets and costumes. It's refreshing to see Rebecca DeMornay playing a naive innocent (years before producers began casting her as sexy psychopaths in films like "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle").

Most of the Cannon MovieTales have found their way to DVD (the others include "Hansel & Gretel", "Sleeping Beauty", "Rumplestiltskin", "The Frog Prince", "Snow White", and "Red Riding Hood").

Children of the 80's rejoice! (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

2 out of 5 stars The stars are only for Rebeca and the story.......2007-02-27

Come on! I can't believe that the Mr. below said that this is the basis for all the beauty and the beast features! You must see the Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the beast, wich is truly a great film, and the inspiring of all other good versions (Faery tale theatre of Shelley Duvall, with Klaus Kinsky as the beast, and Roger Vadim as director), and the crap versions (this one, disneys). This one is boring, low paced, and a bad copy. The only thing of this film is the beauty. But i prefer to see her in the movie with Michael Fox.

4 out of 5 stars The Basis of all Beauty & the Beast Stories.......2007-02-21

This movie was produced before the Disney movie, and you can see where they got many of their ideas. This movie was produced before the TV show, and again you can see where they got their ideas.

It is a creative enchanted look at a fun fantasy! It is worth the money and the time you will spend watching it. And ... if you believe in romance, this is the movie for you! It made a great Valentine's present.

5 out of 5 stars very cute and sticks to the origional story!.......2007-02-09

I just recived this dvd and am very happy with it! I now have all the cannon movie tales on vhs and dvd. I had never seen this. I love the songs and lavish costumes and sets. my favorite song is " if you see with your heart" what a beautiful song and well written amd composed. This collection of live action fairy tales are MUCH better than the faerie tale theatre versions. If only cannon had decided to make a more complete series. These movies are wonderful!
