It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

FIRST OFF:

Beautiful, soft, colorful animation with incredible detail brings this character driven doggie-tale to life. The songs, like all great animated classics work into the plot and are a great aid in telling the story, making the film entertaining and making children of all ages happy.

BUT THERE IS MORE -- MUCH MORE: DOG'S TELL THEIR OWN TALE!

Dog's tell their own tale in this one. Unlike "101 Dalmations", which Disney also made several years after this film, the humans are basically not substancial characters. The humans' role is simply as a background setting for the tale of the Lady and the Tramp, which is completely appropriate for this kind of tale.

WHAT MAKES "THE LADY AND THE TRAMP SO DARN GOOD"?

1]- The 9 "Old Men" were really at the top of their game when they animated the major characters of the film. In the featurette, in the 50th anniversary edition, we see exactly what these very talented guys were aiming for and some of the interesting stuff they came up with for Walt Disney.

2]- The music and lyrics are well timed, entertaining and really help set up the many varying moods of the individual scenes. The soundtrack also furthers the plot, and helps us to really like who and what we are seeing on the screen. In short, the tunes help to humanize the doggies, and in that way assist in telling a multi-level tale that means something to kids, something to adults, and something collectively to everyone. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Incredibles" also clearly illustrate that multi-level trait.

3]- The story itself is well constructed with clever while appropriate dialogue, and a very eclectic blend of characters with dogs and humans both being from a very broad and diverse background.

The small town, on the verge of the modern age, still is a special and desirable place to be in this film. Things like telephones and early automobiles are just barely hinted at in a few scenes.

4]- Cinemascope was used, for one of the first times in this film, and simply put it makes for a larger, broader world with a lot more background animation. Disney actually filmed two completely drawn versions of this film, Cinemascope [widescreen], and Full-Screen, because many theatres were not equipped to play cinemascope films in 1956.

5 out of 5 stars Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26

One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."

5 out of 5 stars It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25

LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.

A nightclub act with a handsome singer and an anarchic monkey-boy became a potent box-office force in the early 1950s. Although their wild live antics never translated intact to the screen, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were an instant movie hit; they had two films in the box-office top ten of 1951, and another two in the top ten of 1952. Paramount repays this effort with its Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection, Volume One, which gathers most of their early efforts at the studio.

Martin and Lewis were introduced in 1949's My Friend Irma, a big-screen version of a popular radio show. The boys are in support, but their high jinks were the hit of the movie, and their portion of screen time ballooned in My Friend Irma Goes West, which they basically take over. Both movies are enjoyable comedies, and especially in the sequel Lewis's lunatic style of mugging, vocal calisthenics, and physical shtick makes him look like an animal uncaged.

Not included in this set is their first starring vehicle, At War with the Army. The next six consecutive films are here, beginning with one of their best, 1951's That's My Boy. Jerry plays the athletically hopeless son of a famous football hero (Eddie Mayehoff, a funny man). It's a measure of how much Lewis had grabbed the public's imagination that Dino doesn't show up until the film is 20 minutes old. (Lewis later wrote that he arranged for "That's Amore" to be included in The Caddy to bolster Martin's popularity.) Also from 1951, Sailor Beware is a service comedy with some hilarious sequences--Lewis conducting a male chorus, for instance, or undergoing a slightly surreal medical exam--and the team still has a freshness despite the movie formula. Their timing together in the punchdrunk-boxer routine shows some of the chemistry they must have had onstage.

Jumping Jacks (1952) is the least of Martin & Lewis's service comedies, with Lewis as a showbiz performer who pretends to be in the military as a favor to Dean. The Stooge, same year, is one of their best teamings, this time with a touch of pathos along with the laughs: Martin is a self-centered singer who can't acknowledge that his hired stooge is the reason his act is boffo. Along with the backstage stuff, the movie demonstrates how skilled Lewis's singing was, even in a comic purpose.

1953's Scared Stiff is a warmed-over remake of the Bob Hope comedy The Ghost Breakers, and shows that the boys were overworked; the story is lame and the clowning feels more desperate (although Lewis has a few moments imitating co-star Carmen Miranda). In The Caddy, from the same year, Martin indulges his real-life passion for golf, and Lewis plays the neglected caddy. It's a return to form, borrowing a Stooge vibe, and boasts an odd framing story with the boys playing a nightclub act very much like Martin & Lewis.

Unless you're already a fan, your enthusiasm for this set will depend on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis and his manic, childlike dementia. Either you'll laugh, resist, or become fascinated at the naked, look-at-me neediness of his act. Dean Martin can be appreciated for the difficult job of playing straight man to this craziness (notice, too, how his singing voice comes into its own, from imitation Bing Crosby in the first couple of pictures to the familiar, relaxed style of vintage Dino). The DVD set provides no supporting features, but this is the first chapter of a hugely profitable and popular showbiz phenomenon. Just one more thing: "Who's your little whoozis? Who's your toitle dove?" --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Dean & Jerry.......2007-09-15

Great stuff. Dean & Jerry had a really good chemistry and are truley a joy to watch. Although film making has changed over the years, it's still fun to go back in time and see GREAT comedy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SET! SOME EARLY FAVORITES , BUT MISSING ONE FILM!.......2007-08-04

This is a really good set for any fan of this classic comedy team's films. This has almost all the early stuff, but where is "At War With The Army"???? it does include the "Irma" films which started it all! The other five films on this set are some of their best! The DVD transfers are very good, but 1/2 star deducted for not including a great movie! 4 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sailor Beware.......2007-07-04

Sailor Beware is one of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Funnies movies. But it is very importantly funny to me because my father was one of the sailors in this movie when it was filmed in San Diego Navy. My father was in boot camp at the time. In fact in the seen where they are doing there exercise my father is about the 5th or 6th person behind Dean Martin. We laugh allot about this seen because my father hesitates in going down in one or more of his exercises. My father served 4 years in the Korean War. But this movie is the only thing we talk about. A great movie.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Martin and Lewis fans!.......2007-07-01

I am thankful that Paramount took the time to present this collection of the funniest works by the comedy team of Martin and Lewis. Personal favorite...Sailor Beware! I hope that we will be able to see Money From Home and Three Ring Circus real soon on DVD. You will laugh for hours with the works of the crooner and the clown...Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars This is Poverty - White Trash Style.......2007-09-13

For those folks that thought this movie was "dirty" and "gross", well, this is how it is in white trash poverty. If you can't stomach it, please, show it to your kids. I would highly suspect that if every kid in America watched THIS movie instead of "Free to Be You and Me" (or whatever whacko liberal feel good/do what you want in life/don't worry about what anyone else thinks movies they show today), there would be no drop-outs, class skipping or failed grades.

1 out of 5 stars Anyone with a soul should find this movie horrible.......2007-08-01

this movie was a horribile, disgusting collection of scenes featuring white trash doing white trash things: Pimping out your mentally retarded sister; Huffing glue; Killing stray cats and selling them to the chinese resturant; Deformed retarded gay midgets coming on to one other; and then random things like a kid running around with bunny ears on.....? everything in this movie is DIRTY (as in unsanitary..not explicit), POOR, and improperly worded.

however if you enjoy being disgusted and appalled as i sometimes do then watch this movie, DONT BUY IT ...you wont want to watch it more than once. i'd rather watch this movie than something i've already seen 10 times.......but i'll never watch it again

i took a shower when it was over, it made me sick.

2 out of 5 stars It claws your senses, twists your logic, and murders your soul; and yet I can't look away. .......2007-05-23

Another reviewer said Gummo was "unlike anything else of TV." My Holy Goodness, how right they were. If a lunatic was voted mayor of a town, Gummo would be the film depicting the townsfolk who call such a place "home-sweet-home."

We are introduced to the following: two awkward, gangly teens who kill cats and sell the rotting corpses to a local grocery store for a dollar per pound; three sisters who are about as backwards as anything this side of Appalachian poverty; a seedy brother who pimps his retarded sister out to teenaged boys; a sinister-looking young lady who, obviously being on the slow side, enjoys walking around the town singing "Jesus loves me this I know" as well as the always depraved "A-B-C-D-EFG-" song. Along the way, we also meet a young man wearing nothing but some swim trunks and a pink bunny hat who has the habit of urinating on cars driving beneath a local underpass. Oh, and for fits and giggles, we meet a group of rowdy mullet-styled rednecks who get their kicks from wrestling kitchen chairs to the point of exhaustion.

Sound like fun? This is a messed-up movie about twisted people living in the aftermath of a tornado that has swepth through their little slice of heaven. Nothing runs together smoothly as scenes and storylines come and go without rhyme or reason. Even the David Lynch and Terrence Malick crowds out there will feel disoriented in about 90% of this film.

A word of caution: if you begin to watch Gummo, you will have trouble turning away. I would liken it to a drug addiction that you know will harm you in some if you keep using it, but you end up alleviating such a warning by telling yourself, "Hey, just a little more. Just a little bit mo...."

1 out of 5 stars time better spent elswhere.......2007-05-19

Here are some alternative suggestions to watching this movie:
1) spend the hour and a half in a forest preserve out house...
2) try making your own crystal meth and then doing it
3) eat some spoiled chicken, get sick, puke and then role around in it.
4) piss in your pants and don't change your clothes
Doing one or all of the above is a far better experience than sitting through this piece of vile trash.

1 out of 5 stars I like cats........2007-05-19

I hated this trash. I'm so glad I saw it on IFC and didn't pay for rental. I can't ask for my money back. I do want that hour and a half back though. That so called writer/director(?) should go away.

With her third feature, Friends With Money, writer-director Nicole Holofcener continues to develop one of the most distinctive voices in American independent filmmaking. While not as purely satisfying as her previous films Walking and Talking and Lovely and Amazing, Holofcener's third feature is admirably ambitious in establishing a diverse and dynamic range of relationships among long-time girlfriends, their spouses (for better and worse), and the way in which money (or lack of it) affects them all. The have-not of the group is Olivia (Jennifer Aniston), a teacher-turned pot-smoking housecleaner in the upscale neighborhoods of West Los Angeles. She's drifting, uncertain of her future both professionally and romantically, while her friends Franny (Joan Cusack), Christine (Catherine Keener), and Jane (Frances McDormand) cope with the relatively enviable problems of wealthy discontentment. They've all got personal crises to resolve, and while Olivia juggles the affections of a likable louse (Scott Caan) and a lonely slob who's secretly rich (Bob Stephenson), Holofcener taps a rich vein of humor and melancholy as these women go about their daily routines, attending benefits, chatting over meals, and doting over Olivia as the "needy one" in their closed circle of friendships. All of this is richly observed and wonderfully acted (with male costars played by Greg Germann, Jason Isaacs, and Simon McBurney), but reaction to Friends With Money is strictly a matter of personal taste. Holofcener isn't telling a story so much as examining lives in various states of disarray, and she offers no false comforts or simple resolutions. Like life, Friends With Money just continues on its way, with some friends happier than others. There's plenty of truth to be found, if you know where to look.--Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars What's the point?.......2007-09-01

What a disappointment! Jennifer Anniston is capable of so much better! This movie had a good beginning, great characters, lots of potential in the plot lines - that went no where. Pointless. At least I can say now that I've seen it. That's a couple of hours of my life I'll never get back.

Oh, I would not recommend this movie for a date. Way too much to argue about in it.

If you want to see Jennifer in a good movie, see Bruce Almighty. Much better usage of time.

Bruce Almighty (Widescreen Edition)

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying slice-of-life about 40 somethings.......2007-07-04

"Friends with Money" is a slice-of-life drama about a group of female friends who no longer have much in common but nevertheless are tied together by their long-standing friendship.

Many plot threads are begun but few are resolved so the film leaves you feeling somewhat up-in-the-air - it almost feels like a pilot to a TV series. Despite all this "Friends with Money" is strangely satisfying. A mature film for an "adult" audience. This film will particularly resonate with 30-40 somethings.

2 out of 5 stars Confused.......2007-05-23

How come these friends with money didn't get their friend without money hooked up with something that allowed her to become a friend with money? What kind of friends allow friends to clean houses, when they themselves have house maids? Shouldn't she have at least worked for her friends with money? All I know is, before you can figure that out, Olivia, played by Jennifer Anniston, marries a rich fat guy and the movie ends happy as can be. By the way, I have a hard time believing someone as exquisite as Jennifer Anniston, would either have a problem finding descent men or end up with a fat guy. The most realistic character in the movie was the menopausal Jane, played by Frances McDormand; she gets mad and lashes out, but no one seems to know why? All in all, the world portrayed in this movie seemed a bit superficial. Wealthy people and those who live amongst them are always protrayed as rich and happy, but guilty about being rich and happy. It seems like the same old story, unhappy socialites socializing about their status quo discomforts.

2 out of 5 stars What was this??.......2007-05-20

I like Jennifer Aniston, so that was why I wanted to watch this movie. I did not get this movie at all. Jennifer Aniston was a cleaning woman, and her freinds were rich with marital problems. Apparently, Jennifer Aniston was a two month fling for some married guy that she kept crank calling. Then, she puts up with this other guy who just uses her for sex, and ask her for half her cleaning job money after they have sex in the houses that she cleans. They end the movie with Jennifer Aniston's fat sloppy client (his house was a mess) telling her that he was rich and didn't have to work, so she sleeps with him, too. She wants to help him buy new furniture for his house, and then, the movie is over. Is she stupid or what? I kept waiting for the story to start, and the next thing I knew, the movie was over. Urg? I wouldn't normally go running for a Jennifer Aniston film, but with Frances McDormand, Catherine Keener and Joan Cusack in this film, I thought it couldn't be bad. Maybe more of an indie flick than big budget Hollywood waste of time. Yes it COULD be bad. As some of the previous reviewers detailed so well, the characters are quirky (GOOD) but not well developed (BAD). There isn't one character you could really get behind, understand or have empathy for. Jennifer Aniston's character is an unmotivated maid, but she has such good values that she says she doesn't smoke her client's pot, that would be wrong. But she does steal their expensive face cream to use on her feet and also uses their sex toys. Huh? And the whole message about money - "is having money so good after all?" OK. But again, not well developed (BAD). The ending -- to use monetary terms -- is a SELL-OUT and CHEAP. Don't get fooled by a semi-great cast. This movie is a waste of time.

Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals, and a letterbox version is available. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A DOGS WORLD IN 'THE LADY AND THE TRAMP'.......2007-07-26

That athletic phenom of a retriever is back for his fourth movie, trying his paw at baseball this time. Disney hasn't strayed far from the franchise formula, siccing upon the poor retriever yet another set of doggie thieves--this time mad scientists who want to capture Buddy and his pups to isolate the "Super Sports Gene." The original Josh (heartthrob Kevin Zegers) is also back, only to be dispatched to college soon after the opening credits. So it's younger sister Andrea (Caitlin Wachs) who needs Buddy's help this time, as she muffs her baseball debut and suffers the benign neglect of her parents (Cynthia Stevenson and Richard Karn). As with its predecessors, this is harmless, if inane, fun. Kids and dogs are heroes; adults are mostly benevolent screw-ups. Raccoons and scientists may take issue with their portrayals, but, then again, how many scientists operate their labs out of trailer parks? Ages 4 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

4 out of 5 stars Solid family movie.......2006-10-03

Sure there are a million air bud movies, but this is nice family entertainment. Simple, direct story that young children can follow
and root for the air bud family. Emphasis on point of view of children
and a family that can say "I love you" to each other. Minimizes "evil
bad guy" angle so as not to be a distraction as in so many other movies.
Good for 1rst and 2nd graders.

3 out of 5 stars Not Shabby........2006-02-22

This movie is okay but I'm not too interested in it. The first and second Air bud movies were the best to me. This movie couldn't make me laugh so I sticked to the first two Air bud movies.

Any movie that only manages to get 12 people to scribble down a few thoughts is one that you are probably better leaving on the store's shelf. Those who did manage to write a review are eager to tell you that AIR BUD - SEVENTH INNING FETCH is one of the best of the "Air Bud" sequels. Well...let me tell you, folks: that's not saying much. This movie is pure trash. It was probably filmed in three days and merely churned out in order to get kids to drag their parents to one more "Air Bud" movie.

Let's hope that Bud is on his way out. After all, there aren't a lot of sports left to play. But somehow I get the eery feeling that I'm going to be taking my kids to the 50th sequel: AIR BUD - CANINE CURLING or, better yet, AIR BUD - BOBSLED BARK. Come on , folks. Do us a favor and let's put this franchise to sleep.

A tense psychological thriller, Apartment Zero concerns the intertwining of a loner, film buff Colin Firth (The English Patient) and his new mysterious boarder (Hart Bochner) in present-day Argentina. The new roommate is enigmatic and outgoing, befriending everyone that the poor loner could not. But Firth soon suspects a connection between his boarder's appearance and the reports of bodies in the streets murdered for political reasons.

The heart of the film lies in the increasingly bizarre relationship that develops between the two opposites, breeding the seeds of mistrust. An original and offbeat noir-type drama, the film, cowritten by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), proceeds at a slow and deliberate pace, gradually drawing the viewer deeper into the intrigue and isolation of Firth's tortured soul. Some genuinely creepy moments and an all-around macabre mystery make this film worthwhile viewing for mystery fans everywhere. --Robert Lane

Apartment Zero

I went to go and see this movie by myself when I had first moved to Los Angeles, California and didn't have any friends. It is a film about how we become those that we love and assume in great part their identities. It is an excellent and very visual movie, taking place in Buenos Aires. It certainly left me moved in the least and understanding just how true the theme really is having gone through something similar myself.

This is a slightly different cut than the original DVD/VHS release so that was interesting to see.

But the great thing about this DVD is the bonus commentary tracks; the first by director Martin Donovan and the other with Steven Soderbergh interviewing screenwriter David Koepp.

Informative and highly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Cute movie...better for older kids........2007-01-11

This movie is cute for my 8 year old but it's not really one she wants to watch over and over in our van for long trips. It has some sad parts and the story line is too heavy for my 2 year old to stay interested. It's very cute and enjoyable but is more a one time movie in our opinion. I'm still glad to own it.

1 out of 5 stars Not for kids..........2006-09-23

This movie is NOT for young kids even though the back of the DVD case shows a dog getting a bath and states "this is a family movie". My kids were balling their eyes out when the dogs were getting put to sleep. I should have watched it first - LIVE AND LEARN!!!

1 out of 5 stars Basically a 90 minute PETA commerical........2006-08-28

First off, I grew up with dogs, I have an affection for dogs. I even have respect for PETA and their effort to ethically treat animals. That's a good mission to have.

But, that is a message that does not play well as this 90 minute movie. I mean with quotes like this "Maybe there are people like me behind the eyes of another creature." just went too far for me.

This movie was too melodramtic and my wife was calling out the plot points about one minute before each one which made for an abysmal screenplay. The musical score was fine enough as was the melody.

If you want a better dog movie, go get something like Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows. Both are probably equally molodramtic but at least they have a better story/screenplay to carry the story to the conclusion.

This movie is literally for the dogs.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent film........2006-06-07

Fluke (Carlo Carlei, 1995)

There is book, and there is film. And every once in a while, there are book and film that are utterly unlike one another, and yet both are brilliant. Perhaps the best-known example of this phenomenon is Stephen King's novel and Tobe Hooper's TV miniseries 'Salem's Lot, which bear at best a passing resemblance as narrated by a gallon drunk. Fluke comes off the same way, and despite Carlei's ham-handedness, this movie works.

First, you have to realize this movie is based on a novel by James Herbert. The phrases "James Herbert" and "family film" are incapable of existing in the same sentence without quotes around them, or some sort of weird dimensional rift will open in the Universe, and the things that come through will eat all humanity, but not before subjecting it to weird perverse tortures. (No, they're not Cenobites. The things in James Herbert's imagination eat Cenobites for breakfast and use the nails as toothpicks.) So one has to wonder, as I have for the past ten years, how any movie based on a James Herbert novel could possibly be called a "wonderful family film" by, erm, at least one critic blurbed on the DVD cover. I forget which. Then I remembered 'Salem's Lot, and still had some hope that we might get a good film out of it (film adaptations of James Herbert novels tend to be bloody boring-- they cut out all the good bits to avoid the video nasty laws). Then they attach an unknown writer-director and Matthew Modine, a guy whose career was going nowhere fast in 1995 (though it did pick up again soon after this, and has almost hit its previous level). I got to the point where the only hope I had for this flick lay in Eric Stoltz, whom I have always loved and will always love, no matter how awful the films in which he appears (yes, I even forgave him Anaconda. He needed the money. Honest). So, finally, I got the chance to sit down and actually watch the thing... and it really is wonderful. It bears about as much resemblance to the James Herbert novel upon which it is based as the American all-beef Ball Park bears to its wondrous ancestor the haggis, but as with the scary meat products, each is great in its own way.

Tom Johnson (Modine, recently in Transporter 2) and Jeff Newman (Stoltz, recently of The Butterfly Effect) are partners. In the opening scene, the two of them are racing down a country road. Johnson pulls up alongside Newman's car and tries to get him to pull over so they can talk. Newman ignores him, but Johnson doesn't get too long to try-- he ends up playing chicken with a truck, losing, and going over an embankment to his death. Thanks to the magic of special effects, we see his soul fly off and inhabit an Irish Setter pup. (And through the magic of film, you can get an Irish Setter pup from a mom who looks kind of like a collie mix.) The pup, who eventually becomes the title character, has a series of very nasty adventures early in his life (the first half-hour of this film makes me wonder why anyone called it a family film-- it is relentlessly depressing) before meeting Rumbo (xXx's Samuel L. Jackson), a big Saint Bernard who offers to teach him the ropes. Fluke is unhappy with his life as a dog, however; he has recurring dreams of Newman and his family, and he feels that his family is in danger.

First, the bad things about the movie. Carlei is overly ham-handed with a number of his moral lessons (especially in the final voice-over, which any editor worth his salt should have burned rather than exposing it to the elements). If you're looking at the film as something to watch with the kiddies, you may have an uncomfortable time answering some questions from the younger ones about death and vivisection that are likely to be raised in the opening half-hour of the film. And the kid who voices Fluke-as-pup (Sam Gifaldi of the animated series Hey! Arnold) sounds as if he's reading, woodenly, off a teleprompter. The end, while not actually leaving any loose ends dangling, feels a little frayed. And Nancy Travis' line "...he needs a bath. He's filthy!"is perhaps the most unintentionally funny ever voiced in kids' films; you will never see so well-groomed and well-fed a road dog as Fluke.

The good things: well, the rest of the movie. The opening half-hour, while relentless, has no single scenes that will traumatize a kid any more than some of the stuff Disney put in their animated flicks when we were kids. Modine and Jackson have a great chemistry between them, and when Fluke starts spending most of his time around humans, things ride the line of sappy without ever quite crossing over. Most of all, Lynn Stalmaster, the High King of Casting Directors, made one of the most inspired choices of his career in Eric Stoltz. I can't explain why without ruining the crux of the film, but let's just say it would've been hard to achieve the effect the movie did without Eric Stoltz playing Newman. Perfect, perfect, casting.

Unless you're a diehard James Herbert fan who can't separate Fluke-the-film from Fluke-the-book, you'll probably end up loving this movie despite yourself. Yeah, yeah, the talking animal thing's way overdone. That doesn't mean it can't still be done well now and again. ****

By far one of my favorite movies when I was little, I was delighted to finally perch my DVD copy of "Fluke" in my movie library. Ever since the lines began to echo in my head ("Well, he's MY little fluke"), I've known my purchase of the flick was imminent. It is, truly, a touching, poignant, and haunting film that tells of loss, betrayal, realization, and redemption on one side, and forgiveness, resilience, and pure, simple understanding on the other. It is about learning to live your life, and learning to pick yourself up again. It's told through the eyes of a dog, but it transcends that.

My main complaint is that the movie can't make up its mind whether to be a romping family film (just watch the theatrical trailer; they cut out the whole "reincarnation" bit and sell it as a kiddie flick) or a full-fledged drama. As a result, the integrity of the film suffers, which is a true shame. As a kid, I loved the lighter bits which I, now older, view as the movie's main pratfall. It also tends to fall into a by-the-numbers rut in the first few sequences, (slight spoiler ahead) such as when the pup Fluke ends up in the pound and the horrible, mean people at the HUMANE SOCIETY whine about his constant barking and schedule him for a euthanasia. (As if a puppy would be put down for barking.) Clearly, this scene seeks to scold anyone who doesn't want dogs running free on the streets. An ideal I applauded a few years ago, but now I must view more realistically. If the producers had allowed the film to launch into a truly moving drama, perhaps "Fluke" would have gained a larger audience. Instead, it may leave the kids wandering off after the first half, and the adults fast-forwarding to the later half.

The decision is yours to make, depending on your age, but my guess is most of you will fall in love with this unique story of redemption and understanding.

Product Description

From the director of The Sandlot comes this fun-filled sequel that proves the power of teamwork and celebrates the magic of friendship. Ten years after the original story, the local dirt field is no "home" to a new group of neighborhood kids who get together to share laughs, show off...and play ball! But the gang faces their toughest challenge as they try to retrieve an irreplaceable model rocket that lands in Mr. Mertle's (James Earl Jones) backyard behind left field - a forbidden territory guarded by a legendary beast know as "The Great Fear."

Amazon.com

A decade has passed in the small town where the original Sandlot gang banded together during the summer of '62 to play baseball and battle the Beast. Now comes the sequel, a campy romp back to the dugout where nine new kids descend on the diamond only to discover that a descendant of the Beast lives in Mr. Mertle's backyard--a monster of mythical proportions known as "The Great Fear." Director/writer David Evans cleverly ties his two films together by introducing Johnnie Smalls, kid brother of Scotty Smalls ("You're killin' me, Smalls") who is well-versed in the legendary struggle for possession of the Babe Ruth baseball. Smalls befriends the sandlot gang (which now includes three girls) and its leader, David Vincent Durango, and relates the rumor of "a mutated, insane Bigfoot dog thing" behind the left field fence. Summer unfolds with baseball rivalries, rocket launchers, and the infamous Carnival kissing booth, but fate will forever change the history of the sandlot when a crisis forces Smalls and Durango to join forces against The Fear. Regardless of one's sentiments on sequels, Evans' writing in this remake is nearly as fresh and full of memorable quips as the original, including his characteristically understated narration. And while the film may be faulted for its forced melodrama and unseasoned cast, James Earl Jones lends his star appeal and the 70s soundtrack will make you wish for the days when fireworks were legal. Rated PG for profanity and raunchy humor. (Ages 6 to 14) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars How is this a sequel??.......2007-05-29

This is not a sequel to Sandlot.. It's a HORRIBLE remake.. the scenes are almost exactly the same but cheesier.. blech.. I can't believe they tried to murder the original. Shame on whoever made this.

2 out of 5 stars Just a Special Feature.......2007-05-14

This dvd may be good for fans of the original movie only because of the Special Feature "Sandlot Kids: Then and Now" which has interviews and behind the scenes shots of the original films cast.
For a better follow up story to "The Sandlot" I'd recommend the recently released "Sandlot 3 Heading Home".

2 out of 5 stars Meet The Sandlot's little annoying brother .......2007-04-13

Usually when a sequel is made it goes out of its way to be different than the original, even if the original was a classic film. This one, despite trying to be everything that the original Sandlot was, fails miserably.

First of all, there is no real personality to the characters like there was in the first one. This might just be the acting, the script, or a combination of both. There is no sense of camaraderie between the characters in comparsion to the original Sandlot. The stupidity of some scenes don't fall into the "fun" category that we might excuse in a kid's movie. Instead, this movie's production seemed rushed and out to profit from the first film. We see this with so many of the same scenes and conflicts from the first film: the battle for the sandlot, the insults being thrown between the two rival teams, hitting the ball over the fence and having to retrieve it, the legend, etc. If there is one difference, it is that it is supposed to be 10 years later, and there are 3 girls on the team.

Sometimes you can forgive a movie for being unoriginal and poor. But, not this one.

The average 2 star rating given to this film is about right on I'd say.

5 out of 5 stars doesn't get any better.......2006-11-10

My 5 and 8 year old loved the first sandlot and so I ventured to buy this one. They love it! I was very impressed. It is a clean family movie that I feel comfortable letting them watch. They watched it over and over again. I think you will be very pleased.

1 out of 5 stars Movie made for money.......2006-09-24

Not worth seeing if you have seen the first one...all this move does is mirror the first sandlot. Change the names add a couple of girls and maybe switch the script around and Sandlot 1 and 2 are pretty much the same. I bet you could watch them at the same time and the timing would be right but the words would be different. Not worth buying if you have the first one. Which I will add is an awsome movie. This movie should have never been made...stay away from S2 because the only purpose of this movie was to make the director some more money and make you poor.

The beloved tale of Heidi, the Swiss miss whose indomitable spirit touches all those around her, despite having been dealt a harsh hand in life, gets a spunky boost in this 2005 film adaptation. A stellar cast includes Max von Sydow as Grandfather, a roiling-with-inner-rage Geraldine Chaplin as Rottenmeier, and a benevolent Diana Rigg as Grandmamma. At the center of their world--like it or not--is Heidi, played with irrepressible optimism by the adorable Emma Bolger. As the orphaned Heidi is flung from home to home, city to city, valley to mountain, by those who profess not to want her, she accepts her fate and still manages to cast sunshine on her bleak situation. This version features breathtaking scenery--Grandfather's mountain aerie looks more like a Canadian Rockies summer spread than a place of self-imposed solitary confinement. At times the pan-European cast gives the film a feel of being the United Nations on location; Chaplin and Rigg's upper-crust British accents clash with von Sydow's clipped Swedish delivery, and Bolger's accent adorably reflects her Dublin roots. (Only the goats truly look Swiss.) But the story of Heidi has a huge heart, and this film is family entertainment in the best sense of the word. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-09-16

this is an older movie but my child just loves it. couldn't bet the price.

2 out of 5 stars not so good.......2007-06-05

I have to start by saying that the scenery was very pretty in some parts of the movie. However I bought this movie for my eight yr old daughter, and the actors had such an accent that even I couldn't understand what they were saying. The "actors" were very poor on acting. Sadness and Joy were only shown through a facial expression. Peter was a grumpy brat who threatened to slap a baby goat. My main complaint though is just the lack of decent acting on the part of the characters. Nobody was very convincing. I would not recomend wasting your money on this feable attempt of a movie

5 out of 5 stars Charming and pleasant classic........2007-02-06

The little girl who plays Heidi is very charming. The scenery and homes are beautiful. I have seen five versions of "Heidi" and liked them all. Each is different enough to be interesting. Heidi is very thoughtful of others. Pleasant and relaxing, moves along steadily.

A little girl goes to live with her grandfather high in the Alpine mountains of Switzerland. She makes friends with a boy who herds the goats. She has adventures as a friend to a girl in wheel-chair of a wealthy family, who has an unkind governess.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this version of Heidi.......2006-11-10

I was always a fan of the Shirley Temple version of Heidi because it was sentimental and it touched my heart-strings! I enjoyed this version so much because of the photography, the actors, and as an adult now I felt the story touched broadly on "life" themes of hurt, forgiveness, love and joy of simple living and of life in general....not to mention the happy ending which I'm always a sucker for. Thorougly enjoyable and one I know I'll watch and share over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars We loved this version. Very different from the others..........2006-10-30

Overall this is our favorite version of Heidi in film. We highly recommend it! Our family watched this movie anticipating the same cutesy antics and departures from the novel as before but were surprised to find this one quite close to the book. It is a bit more somber than the book in my view but this adds a real 19th century feel anyway. Emma Bolger plays Heidi with enough childlike charm, she's not always perfect but her shining eyes and sweet grin helpd me forgive a few tiny flaws in her acting. Max Von Sydow plays Grandfather immaculately with the right amount of grumpiness and compassion. The best performance I think is Del Synott as Sebastian the butler! The only thing I wish the director would have done differently is to spend more time on Heidi's enjoyment in the pastures as is done in the beginning of the book. I would have been delighted to see more expansive views of the Swiss alps also, some of the cinematography is shot closer in with cozier views. I recommend watching this movie then going back to the read the book once again if it has been awhile. It is a truly heartwarming parable.
