Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.
The famous slipper (click for larger image) |
We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke
DVD Features
For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: the 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud."
Bippity-boppity-boo! (click for larger image) |
Because these numbers were never animated, they're accompanied by stylish illustrations from the Disney artists, and they're simply marvelous to look at. The artist of much of that material, Mary Blair, gets her due in a 15-minute featurette, while the better known "Nine Old Men" are the subject of a round-table discussion among some of today's top animators. In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of Cinderella as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The Cinderella That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety.
The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image) |
Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio-only. The material for kids is on the sparse side, consisting of two music videos, Disney Channel personality Sally (from "Mike's Super Short Show") learning how to become a princess with the help of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew and others, a minor dancing-princess feature, and a DVD-ROM design studio. Oddest extra: ESPN's "top Cinderella stories," including the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath's New York Jets, although stories on Mia Hamm and tennis's Williams sisters should appeal to the film's primary target audience of young girls. --David Horiuchi

Cinderella .......2007-08-27
Good movie, great job by disney fixing it up. The story is a little boring though.
I LOVE Cinderella.......2007-08-23
Great script, great animation and lovely music. And of course, the wickedly evil stepmother, who was always my favorite part. Truly worthy of classic status.
classic story.......2007-08-12
My daughter has been playing Cinderella for weeks based on what she gathered from her Princess books. I wanted to make sure that she saw the original movie. She watched it three days in a row, and continues to want to play Cinderella daily. We haven't used the extra features on the DVD-- the main feature is enough electronic entertainment.
Waiting for Cinderella.......2007-07-18
I have an extensive collection of Disney Movies (at least the ones I am interested in). I was very glad to be able to add this Cinderella DVD to my collection.

One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Disney's First Feature from 1937; A Charming Tale (But Too Spooky for Some Kiddies).......2007-08-19
Think twice about showing this to very young children. Beware the evil Queen who wants young princess Snow White's heart in a jeweled box. There is a creepy spirit in a mirror, an attempted murder with a knife, a haunted forest, rats, vultures, and a decrepit old hag with bulging eyes and a magic poisoned apple. I only mention this because there are so many parents writing reviews here that did not expect their kiddies to bawl or hide under the bed for two weeks.
Personally, I love villains. And Disney did some great ones back in the day. I still enjoy Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Sleeping Beauty's elegant Maleficent, and 101 Dalmations' Cruella De Vil.
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was Walt Disney's first feature length animated cartoon which started it all, and continued from Pinocchio to Beauty and the Beast, and beyond. There are some wondrous things in this film: the animation is great for its time, the music is fun and sweet, and the whole fairy tale atmosphere is very nicely rendered in delicate watercolor backgrounds, like an old picture book.
I must admit that Snow White's speaking voice (by Andrea Caselotti) irritates me; it's like Betty Boop and Shirley Temple mixed together. But the dwarfs are so much fun, and they save the film from being a melodramatic tale of jealousy and rage. Disney had even dropped two sequences involving the seven little men in order to move the story along better, one being a musical number about soup, and another where the dwarfs build a bed for their new lady friend. There's tons of anecdotes and trivia like this, about the making of the film, in the platinum dvd's bonus features. It is packed with goodies for animation buffs and film junkies.
The movie seems old fashioned and cliched by today's standards, as it is seventy years old. The current generation may find "Snow White" much too sugary and operatic (even with the chills and thrills of the evil queen) compared to more recent animated fare such as Shrek or Finding Nemo. But this is still a charmer, and it's just amazing how the artists captured emotions in these drawings: The dwarfs weeping at Snow White's vigil (note the candle wax dripping), Grumpy eventually coming around to care about Snow White, and Dopey trying to get the only cushion to sleep on before the others discover it. All in all, still a wonderful movie.
Exactly What I Hoped For.......2007-07-30
This DVD is fantastic! It has everything on it I had hoped for. I was a little concerned that the copy I purchased would not have the "Goddess of Spring" feature it claimed to have, and so I was delighted when it did. The person who sold it to me was very prompt about shipping the DVD and answering my e-mails. I greatly appreciate the effort put in to selling me this item. As a life-long fan of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," I am very happy with this purchase. I'm sure any other "Snow White" fan will be too.
Disney's best animated feature film........2007-07-08
At long last I have a copy of the edition of Snow White I have been waiting for. But no thanks to the Disney people. If they had their way I would be in my grave still waiting for them to reissue the platinum edition. For those of you who are young enough to wait, the wait will be worth it. Last November
I turned 80. Disney averages ten or more years re-releasing Snow White and
The Seven Dwarfs.
Terrible doing business with you.......2007-06-18
One star is actually very generous! I waited over 3 weeks after placing my order to contact the seller. His response to my inquiry of the shipping information was "Please allow 2 weeks for delivery". He didn't even take notice of the attachment containing the original invoice that showed we were already past that delivery date. I sent another email pointing this out, and again, I asked for the information of when and how the item was shipped. We are 9 days past that email, and I haven't heard a word. BUYERS BEWARE
Also, this was supposed to be a birthday gift for my 4 year old...maybe it will make it by Christmas!!!!
"With A Smile And A Song" ~ The Birth Of An American Dynasty .......2007-04-07
To truly appreciate this film one should remember that `Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was released in '37 making it's production an incredible achievement in animation considering the overall state of the art at the time. This film was the spring board for the many Disney classics to follow in the years ahead making it a classic by that standard alone.
However having that said, after all these years the film can still stand on its own merits. The animation is enjoyable, the soundtrack is enchanting, at times haunting and the seven dwarfs are beloved by millions around the world. It may not be technically the best of Disney's animated films but it was the benchmark of all that was to follow and still has a loyal fan base after all these years. A true classic.

A guilty, guilty pleasure, perhaps not one a left-wing feminist should be admitting to in public. Female boomers should recall yearly TV reruns of this Rodgers and Hammerstein production, featuring such delights as "Impossible" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" It may appear a bit stark to younger viewers, but part of the charm of this 1964 network TV special, a remake of the live 1957 telecast originally built around Julie Andrews, is its utter simplicity. An extremely young Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon (of General Hospital fame) are joined by Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, and Celeste Holm. Warren is all sweetness and innocence without a hint of saccharine artificiality, while Damon is a clear-eyed romantic. This very handsome love story is a bit of an oddity, but worth owning just for the memorable score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Great!.......2007-08-12
I remember seeing this show on TV when I was a kid. It's one of my favorites and I love singing along with the songs.
Great movie from my childhood.......2007-08-07
I watched this movie every year as a child when it came on. I fell in love with Lesley Ann Warren watching this movie. Props are outdated for this day and time, but still a great movie in my book.
Its been so long .......2007-07-16
this is the cinderella i grew up with and only 21 i saw it a bit after its first release. It was a shared favorite of my mothers. The only other cinderlla story as a little girl i remember liking as much was the Slipper and the Rose. I am still as big into fairytales then as now. And i am so happy to see this on dvd being as i lost the video we used to tape it off tv along long long time ago. When they came out with the new politically correct version in the mid 90s i was never as hooked by brandys singing roger and hammerstiens classical music as i a was by lesly ann warren or of course julie andrews. i always felt she didn't have enough strength in her voice she couldnt hit the same notes. it was so dissapointing that so many kids today think thats the best those songs can be sung.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.......2007-07-14
The first time I remember seeing this was on a school holiday! I remember being enthralled - because it looked like a play on TV - that everything "...was possible!" Of course seeing it in color (vs black & white back then) is no contest. An all-star cast - I'm sure you'll see someone you like/admire! A definitely YOUNG Lesley Ann Warren as the title character - very different from her performance in Victor/Victoria; A great Celeste Holmes as the Fairy Godmother; Stuart Damon as Charming - very different from character on General Hospital & he can sing(!!); Ginger Rogers in (I thought) minor role as the Queen. Musical fans, get out your wallets, because you'll kick yourself for not purchasing this one. I've seen the updated version with Brandy & Whitney Houston and (in MY opinion) the re-make never quite measures up to the original! A definite purchase!

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh
Description
A "modern" young woman of the 16th century, Danielle (Barrymore) is as independent and wise as she is beautiful and kind. Against remarkable odds, she stands up to her scheming stepmother (Huston) and works miracles on the lives of everyone around her, including the crown prince of France (Dougray Scott)! Now you can relive this captivating, contemporary retelling of the classic fairytale.

One of my favorite movies of all time!!!.......2007-07-20
This movie truly represents an awesome version of the cinderella story...it's such a great chick flick for all the girls to have on a girls night with popcorn and goodies. I loved all of the choice of actors/actresses, they truly fit the charachters well. Good choice in costuming as well, very beautiful costumes and the countryside was absolutely awesome. Go buy it, and have a girls night in your pajamas with lots of goodies. You will be truly happy with this purchase.
I will love Ever After forever after.......2007-06-29
This is the kind of movie you will watch over and over again with your daughter or your grandchildren (or by yourself on a day you need some cheering up). A time-honored story, beautifully done, and updated just enough--but not contemporized (thank goodness).
First there was "Pride and Prejudice" then "Ever After".......2007-06-29
"Pride and Prejudice" was the original formula: 1. a smart whitty character with a sharp tongue offsetting a royal admirer 2. A champion, who extends mercy and deliverance 3. A fairtale marriage to Prince Charming 4. They live happily ever after
The Cinderella story is more intriquing because the central character brings moral issues too the big screen: 1. Recognition of the middle and lower class rights - power resides with the people, not the rulers 2. the vices of involuntary servitude - bondage is abominable 3. the attractiveness of free thought and opinion - the mind is beautiful 4. Intellectual class fits with the wealth class (wealth, values, and religion) difference must be dealt with 5. Beauty overshadows poverty (commitment, passion, and intimacy) 6. Liberty is more compelling than power. (inalienable rights of man - philosophy of law) 7. Love transcends tradition. (Faith, Hope, Mercy, Love, Glory, and Beauty)

More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:
The first version was delightful, this one is even better.......2007-09-17
My first comment to someone was that this later version, with Brandy as Cinderella, is "more colourful." No pun intended; the multiracial cast does add flair, a lot of flair. But somehow this version is just more interesting all around. The characters are more rounded out (take Paolo Montalban as the Prince, for example,) seeming less like two-dimensional stock fairytale characters, more like real personalities. There are more little details, more things going on, such as the marketplace puppet show and the stepsisters shopping for (and quarreling over) clothes in the first scene.
As a child I'd loved the 1964 televison broadcast, which everyone got to view about once a year. After seeing this one, however, I felt the 1964 show was a bit tame by comparison...I didn't notice that Brandi "couldn't act." To me, it seemed she was just playing a quieter, stronger, more serious, perhaps even a bit more cynical Cinderella (could it be that she learned to be more reserved in order to protect herself emotionally, after all those years of scolding?) than Lesley Ann Warren's timid, wide-eyed and very-easily-hurt character (I always identified with the stepsister who notes ominously, "And with very little trouble, I could break her little arm...") Though I've now come to appreciate the special qualities of each of these productions, I would still have to say the second one is my favourite, and my children's favourite as well.
Well, okay they tried?.......2007-07-17
I first saw this production back when it premiered on television. I was about nine years old. I will admit that at the time I did notice that the cast was very diverse, but I never questioned it. I really was not confused. I figured that it was meant to be that way. For me, one of the things that I like, IS the diverse cast. That is probably the only reason that I even liked the film at all.
That said, the colors in this film are way too odd. I understand that it is a fairytale, but they do not need every bright color in the world. Also, they borrowed songs from other musicals. It was not necessary, the show is good without them.
Brandy was probably one of the worst choices that they could have made for Cinderella; especially since Cinderella has to SING. Brandy also cannot act in this. She is so awkward and fake. It is like she is at her first acting class. Whitney Houston was decent, but her singing, of course, was better than her acting. Luckily, she didn't have to act that much. Montalban was fantastic! Then again, he can actually act and sing. Whoopi was funny, but she kind of became annoying by the end of the film. It wasn't her acting, it was just her lines. Bernadette Peters is a good actress, I just didn't like her in this very much.
A Pure Delight!.......2007-06-04
Brandy's Cinderella is the best version of all. Her voice is perfection, her acting genuine and touchingly honest. In comparison 1965's Cinderella, Lesley Ann Warren, sings in a high, reedy voice like fingernails on a chalkboard. Julie Andrews' version is hoary, the singing bland and stilted.
In the 1997 version of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella all the stops have been let out and a timeless masterpiece appears. The production is a starburst of colorful sets, exquisite costumes, tantalizing terpsichore, In this Cinderella the music takes center stage. It is at once sweet, then soulful and always undeniably beautiful.
The first view of the Prince's Ball with the the dancers dressed in flowing, shades of blue, the orchestra blooming into a glorious waltz melody is rapturous, the overhead camera capturing the magic of the couples dancing, whirling in symmetry. This is television magic at its best.
The true beauty of this production, beyond it's acting and music, is that it gives voice to multi-racial America. Why can't a black girl be Cinderella. After all, the story of Cinderella originated in China. If the movie were all black or all Asian, then it could be pushed aside and said it's only for blakc people or Asian people. But the movie is inclusive, showing that fairy tales are not the exclusive domain of white people. Now little black, Asian, white, brown children know they too can be princes and princeses.
If that doesn't sound very important imagine watching television during your childhood and never seeing anyone who looks like you. You loved Oz, but the wizard, Dorothy and even the witch was white.(Ok, the witch was green, but that doesn't count). Your favorite martian was white, Samantha and Darrin were white. You liked them all, but what does looking at a white world do to young, brown, black, or Asian minds. It tells you that you are invisible, you don't count.
Things have changed. Everybody is on tv now. But we still need images that reflect persons of color in positive ways. We too are America. The producer of the production should be very proud.
Wonderful Movie.......2007-05-29
The music is some of the best I've ever heard. Brandy is very good in the role.
Cinderella.......2007-05-13
I loved this movie!! the cast was wonderful although honestly i wasn't impressed with brandy's performance, but all the songs were catchy; I loved them! I remeber watching it when it came out on tv and loving it.Ten years later i still feel the same way about it!

Disney continues to "sequelize" its classic features. With smart foresight, the filmmakers choose to go with three snappy short films to comprise this 73-minute feature with the Fairy Godmother granting wishes to various characters. In the opening short, Cinderella must pursue life as queen. Several feathers are ruffled as she brings her down-home ways to the castle (bring the commoners in and open those darn curtains). In the other tales, one of Cinderella's animal pals receives a chance to see the world quite differently, and finally, Anastasia, Cinderella's formerly evil stepsister, finds love with a little help. As with the other sequels, the look of the film helps bridge the distance between the original and the sequel (here over 50 years) and it comes together seamlessly. Little ones from ages 4 to 9 should be entertained while purists may be a bit aghast. --Doug Thomas
Description
The magical story of Cinderella continues in an all-new movie brimming with irresistible music, lush animation and all your favorite characters from the original Disney classic. When Cinderella and her prince return to the palace from their honeymoon, the new princess suddenly finds herself cast in the role of Royal Hostess. But the traditional rules of the Royal Court don't allow her to entertain in her own warm and wonderful way. With the help of everyone's favorite Fairy Godmother and a band of mischievous mice, Cinderella and her friends find that the only true way to succeed is to be yourself. You'll find dreams really do come true in the enchanting tale of Cinderella II.

Great Movie, Different Colors.......2007-09-14
Great dvd. I like the movie. It is my favorite. The only thing that is wrong is that there are diffrint colors. I mean look at Cinderella's
rags they are blue and look under the mice's shoses there is an oval of light brown under there.
cinderella II.......2007-09-04
I bought this movie for my granddaughter, when it finally arrived it did not work, the seller sent paperwork and packaging for me to return the movie and it would be replaced, however, now I am out the money I paid for this movie and out the movie, it was never sent back, will never do busiess with that seller again and have left a bad review and also have told many people not to go thru her
Not bad... if your kid is into "Cinderella," this is okay to watch.......2007-08-20
Surprisingly, this 2002 sequel to Disney's 1950 classic isn't a complete stinker. Certainly not a great work of art, but if your kid has been sucked into the Cinderella/princess vortex, this DVD is okay to watch. Terrible music, but the story is okay.
There are three short stories on here, strung together with a negligible through-line that involves C.'s mouse friends, Gus and Jaq. The first story finds Cinderella, a post-honeymoon princess, bored stiff with palace life and chafing at the tedious demands of royal fashion and protocol. She undoes the snobbishness of the palace and invites her old friends -- the townspeople and peasants -- to the big royal ball. Most importantly, she is true to herself (cue the music) and true to her dreams.
In another story, one of C.'s wicked stepsisters experiences character growth and finds redemption when she falls in love, and sees what it's like to have a bigger heart. Her sister and mother remain spiteful and mean, leaving room for another story or two along the same line. Lucifer, the mean old tomcat, also falls in love, but still likes to chase mice.
The main disappointment here is how dull and underdeveloped the Prince character remains: he looks hunky, but has no personality. That's problematic, because it implies romance is only about looks, and the contrast between his blandness and Cinderella's relative complexity is a bit odd.
All in all, this is passable fare -- about the level of a "good" Saturday morning cartoon. Adults won't have as much to enjoy here as in the original film, but you won't necessarily be driven crazy this cartoon, or feel your child is being poisoned with horrible imagery or overly sexist messages. The emphasis is mostly on individuality and the redemptive power of being nice to other people. Cinderella is assertive, within very girly confines, and there isn't a lot of violence. You could do worse.
I would give this a 3.5, if I could. (ReadThatAgain)
princess magic.......2007-08-05
my daughter is 3 and she LOVES this movie. She would watch it all day long if she could. she also started calling me "your majesty" and courtsing to me. Can't beat that!
cinderella II.......2007-06-28
i have only see this on tv, but do plan to buy it-having numbers 1 and 3 without #2 is really weird. i don't get why people think it's bad, but of course, nothing can top the oraginal; and e veryone is intitled to their own opinions. i personally think that at any age, disney has great movies.

Look who became a star. Barbie comes to life in this computer-animated Christmas tale that quite naturally takes the longtime favorite doll into a new realm. The plot is a slight variation on the traditional ballet based on Tchaikovsky's music. Instead of being in an open-ended dream, Barbie and her escort, the Nutcracker (soon to be Ken, natch), are on an adventurous quest. Along the way there are more creatures and derring-do than in the original. The sole known voice talent, Tim Curry, has a good old time as the Mouse King, and the animated dancing is gracefully adapted from New York City Ballet choreography. A few clever characters, bright animation, and wonderful music should entrance any Barbie fans ages 3 to 9. The 78-minute feature debuted on video shortly before playing on CBS in 2001. --Doug Thomas
Description
This modern adaptation of the holiday classic casts Barbie in two roles, Clara and the Sugarplum Princess, as she embarks on a musical fantasy adventure for girls of all ages. New York City Ballet's Peter Martins choreographed this wonderful animated film, with music by The London Symphony Orchestra, and featuring the voice of Tim Curry as the Mouse King.
Customer Reviews:
My daughter wants to watch this movie over and over again!!!!.......2007-08-18
I would have given it 5 stars but I just can take it anymore...we always buy the Barbie movies for my 2 year old daughter...this one is her favorite so far. We watch it over and over again. She tries to mimic the dancing in the movie which is very cute. And reacts to the scenes emotionally...she does not like the mouse king..."he's a bad guy".
Better than you'd expect..........2007-03-11
We bought this to replace our original which mysteriously (ok, not so mysteriously) was scratched and skipping. The first of the Barbie movies, Nutcracker offers the London Symphony Orchestra playing and computer animated ballerinas dancing to actual pieces from Tchaikovsky's work. The Barbie movie trademark is twisting stories so that Barbie (heroine) uses honor, determination and quick wit to save the day. I think it is a good way to introduce kids to a classical piece. Tim Curry is great comic relief as the Mouse King. My now 5 year old son will watch it with my daughter (though he'd never admit it!)
Barbie in the Nutcracker.......2007-01-25
The graphics and storyline are beautiful, however, for young children (mine are 3 and 7) the graphics are a little too intense for such young children. Especially at the beginning where the Nutcracker does battle with the Mouse King - the Mouse King is really frightening to young children. There are several scenes later that show children in peril that didn't go over to well my own. I bought several copies and gave some to friends with children for Christmas and then felt the need to call and warn them when I had viewed it myself. (They agreed after viewing also...)I would say that a good age to start off with this is at least 2nd or 3rd grade school aged children. Any younger and you might have a crying or nightmare problem.
Just ok........2007-01-09
My daughter got Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses for her birthday and LOVES it. So, knowing how much she likes that one, Santa brought her Barbie in the Nutcracker but she wasn't very impressed. There isn't much dancing which is what we wanted and expected. It is cute but not as cute as we hoped... this won't be one she watches over and over like the 12 Dancing Princesses.
A very nice movie.......2007-01-08

If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary Duff, who fared better in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but manages to salvage her mainstream appeal in a comedy for which "cute" is not necessarily a compliment. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Meet high school student Sam (Hilary Duff), who scrubs floors at a diner, copes with her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and all the while dreams of Princeton (the perfect spot for a would-be princess to find a prince). But maybe she has a Prince Charming already: her anonymous e-mail buddy (Chad Michael Murray), who arranges to meet her at the Halloween dance. Sam panics when Mr. Anonymous turns out to be the coolest guy on campus. Can he love a girl who isn't part of the in crowd? Can fairy tales come true? Sure - but only if Sam stands up for herself and turns her dreams into reality.

a great movie for kids ages 5-35. same basic "cinderella" story with a new modern twist.
Cinderella Story.......2007-06-29
An entertaining story for Hillary Duff fans...or not. Purchased as a gift for twin 10 year old girls who enjoyed the movie.
The Story of The Cinderella.......2007-06-20
I first watched this movie when it came into theatres, and I actually talked my friends into watching this instead of another movie, which was a hit thriller.
The main reason why I chose this over the other movie was not because of the cast members. Though i admit that I admire the beautiful Miss Hilary Duff and Mr Chad michael Murray as many teenagers do out there(hey! I'm only sixteen myself!), I watched the movie because I was attracted by the story.
Cinderella is one of my favourite fairytales since I was a kid, and I am really glad that it's made into a comedy telling the story of a girl. A Cinderella Story illustrates many aspects of lives of teenagers; family, school, friends, part-time job... and it's shouting out to every teenager out there: never give up. Cling onto your dreams. Eventually, everything will be alright.
Fairytales are like dreams of every person out there, no matter you are a kid or you are an adult. Many say that they are like perfections that don't exist. Well maybe they don't. But if you really look and you really try to see, they are there, waiting for you to explore.
One of my faves!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27
This is a great movie! About a girl named Samantha [people call her Sam]attending high-school.She has two mean step-sisers and a mean step-mother. Sam meets a boy through her cell-phone and they start chating. They don't know who they are talking to,so Sam calls him "nomad.'' She is really talking to Austin Ames,a populer boy in school. They talk through their cell-phones and computers. Then Austin askes Sam to go to the dance at the high-school with him.Sam's step-mother forbids her to go,but Sam, with the help of some friends, gets out of he house, and gets a lovely dress to wear. The party is a costume party,or a halloween party.Sam gets dressed like Cinderella, with a little white eye mask. Her and Austin dance the whole time, but Austin still dosen't know who she is.DON'T MISS HIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know the story: Cinderella rides in a magical pumpkin to the ball, enchants the prince, and flees at midnight. He finds her slipper and tracks her down, and they live happily ever after. But wait! In The Slipper and the Rose, it turns out there's more to the life of a prince than being charming. The king prefers to choose the prince's wife, one of proper social station who would provide a strong political alliance to ward off the kingdom's enemies. That's one of the twists in this 1976 British take on the classic fairy tale, one of a long line of musical versions.
The disgruntled prince, who's as much of a focal point here as the lady with the footwear, is played by Richard Chamberlain, during the years when he was taking on the classics and had not yet been crowned king of the TV miniseries. He displays a pleasant voice opposite Gemma Craven as Cinderella, and veteran character actor Michael Hordern as the king leads the supporting ensemble. Add lavish sets and lush scenery (partially filmed in Austria), humor, fun choreography, and an Oscar-nominated score full of charming songs by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman (veterans of such Disney movies as Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, and who also cowrote the script with director Bryan Forbes), and you have a grand, engaging family musical. The 143-minute running time and dreamy, deliberate pace might test the patience of antsy viewers, but this is the first time The Slipper and the Rose has been available on video in its uncut version, and its legion of fans wouldn't have it any other way. --David Horiuchi

Wimperella...........2007-08-11
I normally don't take the time out for a review, but I am now.
I probably own at least a dozen different Cinderella movies, and this has to be one of the weakest.
Cinderella herself is a total weakling. She is entirely passive. Everything happens to her - she really doesn't take an active roll. She lets her stepmother take everything away from her. She lets herself be bossed by the stepsisters. She lets herself be talked out of marrying the prince. This Cinderella NEVER stands up for herself.
The music drags and is often inappropriate. There's a whole song and dance number in a mausoleum - the prince and his man at arms dance around the crypts of dead kings.
The only good point in this is Richard Chamberlain. The one star is for him.
Save your money - buy A Tale of Cinderella or Ever After instead - better music, and the Cinderella characters don't just let themselves get pushed around.
Simply Wonderful.......2007-03-21
I'm not an elegant writer like most people who review movies and books and such. All I can say is that I LOVED this movie. It goes beyond the simple Cinderella story, explains a lot (why did all of the fairy godmother's magic change back at midnight EXCEPT for the glass slippers?), offers memorable music and delightful characters, and is one of the movies you'll want to watch again and again. It is appropriate for children, and at the same time will have the adults laughing at humor that will go over the heads of the small children. Yes, you want to buy this movie.
''You'll Forget Every Other Love Story You Ever Saw....''.......2005-10-21
"The Slipper And The Rose" is a beautiful version of the classic Cinderella story. Made in England and released in 1976, it retells the familiar story with warmth, humor and wonderful songs by the Sherman brothers, who also did the music for countless Disney films, notably "Mary Poppins". Prince Edward (Richard Chamberlain), heir to the throne of Euphrania, is expected by his father the king (Michael Hordern) and his mother the queen (Lally Bowers) to choose a wife and settle down. To this end, they plan a court ball to which all the princesses they can locate will be invited. Meanwhile, young Cinderella (Gemma Craven) has just lost her beloved father. But things go from bad to worse for her, when her selfish stepmother (Margaret Lockwood) and spoiled stepsisters (Rosalind Ayres and Sherrie Hewson) reduce her to the status of a servant in her own home. Thankfully, however, her fairy godmother (Annette Crosbie) is waiting in the wings to see that she goes to the ball and meet the prince. The rest is up to them... With an excellent cast and fine support from Kenneth More, as the Lord Chamberlain, Christopher Gable as the prince's friend John, and especially Dame Edith Evans as the dowager Queen, "The Slipper and the Rose" is magical film-making.a few twists in the story keep it fresh, while all the charm of the original is preserved. The lavish production, handsome location photography and a witty, sophisticated script has appeal for all ages. One of the best film versions of "Cinderella" ever made. [phillindholm]
This Is A Good Movie That Is Based On The Cinderella Fairytale!.......2005-10-17
I first watched The Slipper and The Rose on TV and I liked it and thought this musical Cinderella that stars Genna Craven and Richard Chamberlain was really quite entertaining and I highly recommend it and I have to agree with the reviewers who say to buy it on DVD instead of on video! One reviewer had said to buy the video tape instead of the DVD and I'm not trying to sound mean and that I'm slamming that reviewer but I think recommending the video tape instead of the DVD is bad advice since they say that VHS tapes are going to be obslolete and go the way of Beta tapes and 8 track tapes.

Our favorite little red monster is the star of this delightful film that playfully skews the story of Cinderella. Originally aired on Fox television in 1999, the feature is a playful mix of human actors and Sesame Street characters that is an easy watch for families with 3- to 7-year-olds. Cinderelmo (he's a boy, if you didn't know) dreams of playing in a castle and meeting the princess (Keri Russell). Unfortunately his mean--but not that mean--stepmother (Kathy Najimy) wants her two other sons to go to the ball at which the princess must declare whom she wishes to marry.
The film is certainly focused on the youngsters (as opposed to the slightly older audience of the Muppet films), but there are plenty of puns and wry humor for adults to enjoy. The handful of songs are quite pleasant, as is the length (50 minutes). Oliver Platt (as a new "fairy godperson") and French Stewart (as Cinderelmo's dog-turned-footman) enjoy their roles with relish. Appearing in various small roles are plenty of the Sesame Street gang, including Grover, Kermit, Cookie Monster, Bert, and Ernie. Great fun. --Doug Thomas

My daughter and I are BIG fans!.......2007-05-02
CinderElmo is so funny! I laugh at the comedy and my 20 month old daughter dances to the music. We both love it!
Don't waste your collective time.......2007-04-14
If you are reading this by yourself, chances are you are the parent-type. Let me save you some time. Though this movie is an "Elmo" movie, it was very lacking of the red guy. If you want one Elmo movie to play over and over and over, stick with Elmo in Grouchland. It is very similar to Labyrinth (from the '80's and not soo much for the pre-school crowd) which was good for me. It was cute and there were some good songs and decent acting. Also, on a totally "awwww" level, I love hearing my 2 year old daughter sing "Elmo's best friend". I doubt you'd get a song like that in most of the other films. Cheers!
It is a good fill-in.......2006-03-15
This video gets you by in a pinch. The music is passable with the "human stars". My son is a Elmo fan but will choose other productions over this one. Like I said, it will get us by in a pinch. I rate it average for a Sesame Workshop Production.

CinderElmo was the first vidio that my (children now four) watched with intrest at the age of two. Then last year we lent out the movie and it was never returned. Recently while in the local vidio store my daughter spoted Elmo in Grouch Land and remembered the CinderElmo vidio. We rented the Elmo in Grouch Land movie while the girls did like it they still missed the CinderElmo. Over the last year I have tried to replace the CinderElmo vidio but could not find it.
