George Stevens (Giant) directed this 1959 film adaptation of the hit play based on the writings of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl from Amsterdam who hid in an attic with her family and others during the Nazi occupation. As Anne, Millie Perkins is something of a milky eyed enigma and--in retrospect--too old for the part; but she is surrounded by an outstanding cast, including Joseph Schildkraut as Anne's patient father, Ed Wynn as a cranky dentist who moves into Anne's "room," and Shelley Winters as the loud Mrs. Van Daan. Stevens turns the many overlapping dramas of the caged characters into the foundation of Anne's growth as a young woman, ready for life and love just at the moment the dream comes to an end. Tragically Recaptures Ill Fated Occupants of The Annex.......2007-08-11

Begins with Otto Frank's 1945 return to The Annex, informed that he is the only surviver of the eight inhabitants, gone are his wife and daughters.

He recognizes a scarf knitted by Anne, picks it up and cried deeply upon it.the scarf seems to represent all that is now lost.

Millicent Perkins ***** is enchanting in the role of Anne Frank, her glossy eyes and energetic playfulness which keeps her deluded from the tragic fate of the eight. She's full of soul and depth.

Shildkraut is also realistic in his portrayal of a very compassionate father trying to keep the children's spirits up and insuring that the children continue with their studies,providing them with as normal a life as possible under the very oppressed ,disturbing circumstances.

Shelly Winters,well she was well awarded for her convincing role.

All in all it is a very great, though extremely disturbing and saddening film.

Watching this touching movie spreads into your heart, and makes the eyes flood up with pity and sorrow.

This movie Should be seen At Least Once. It is easy to forget that we should count our blessings and be reminded of human torture the Holocaust brought. This film has a humbling effect.

The ending can easily move one to be more appreciative of his family and how little time we have on earth to love. As they stand , the eight of them terrorized, and yet somehow seem accepting and still hold dignity despite the doom they face.

One Last Look at Each Other and the movie closes.

One of the finest postwar films to deal with the human drama of the Holocaust, Stevens's tense, heartfelt adaptation of the popular stage play was based on the real-life Frank's own diaries. Schildkraut is tailor-made for the role of the ever-patient Mr. Frank, and Perkins is movingly adept at capturing Anne's adolescent turmoil in the face of impending horror. Shelley Winters's anxious, high-strung turn as Mrs. Van Dean won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Gorgeously shot in CinemaScope by Oscar winner William Mellor, "Diary" is a poignant and ultimately tragic coming-of-age tale about a kind of imprisonment from which there is no escape.

really an excellent movie--I can see why it won an Academy Award

However, I used it in my eighth grade English class and students were a little bored; several of them voiced a wish that it was in color.

Blair unearths a 1980 interview with the only surviving member of the Frank family, Anne's father, Otto, who offers an unpublished portion of her diary. Blair also discovers previously unseen footage of her watching a 1941 wedding, the only known film of Anne to exist; it's a brief, but breathtaking image of a girl who inspired the world. Blair also interviews Peter Pepper, who hid with the Franks, and Hanneli Goslar, who befriended Anne and her sister at camp and depicts the Frank girls' last days. The most potent interview, though, is with Miep Gies, Otto's employee who risked her life to help the Franks. Gies, modest and not completely comfortable on camera, is so likable that she seems to embody Anne's touching words, spoken amidst the horror of their lives: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." This is a good documentary of the life of Anne Frank and those people involved in her life. There is information about her family and the people that lived with her and helped her family in her 2 years of hiding before going to the concentration camp. Most information is told through her diary and feedback from an interview type setting of those who lived to tell the tale. There is only one clip of Anne lasting about 3 seconds. This is a very informative documentary no actors are involved in this film.

Very moving, but what a gift this young girl had - just an ordinary teenager and her problems. Her murder was and will always be to me the first thoughts of the holocaust - only 67 years ago.

An inspiration to millions the world over with her posthumously published diaries, Anne Frank here gets an eye-opening and deeply moving tribute from writer/producer/director Blair, who excavated rare film footage of Anne and her father Otto, the only member of the family to survive the camps. Quite powerfully, we also hear direct testimony from Miep Gies, a family friend who bravely risked her life to help the Franks escape, and Hanneli Goslar, the last person to have contact with Anne, through a barbed-wire fence at Bergen-Bergen. This is an incredibly well put together documentary on the life of Anne Frank. I am currently teaching "Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank to a grade 8 English class. I found this documentary which interviews scores of people who actually knew Anne is excellent support material for a teacher to use in the classroom. By hearing the memories of those who knew her makes Anne's own words seem that much more vivid and poignant.

An inspiring story ........2007-07-18

This CD at 60 min. in length tells the story of one woman's escape from the NAZIs to Denmark. Although the escape is made at the end of the war and does not dwell on the many acts of courage that occurred during the race to help Jews to safety in Sweden, it amply demonstrates the prevailing attitude in Denmark. Danish Jews were Danes pure and simple. What happened to some Danes concerned them all. A good example that in a world gone mad there was still some sanity to be found in the tiny kingdom of Denmark. This CD is worthwhile hour spent, and an excellent teaching tool.
