Amazon.com essential video

One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Disney's First Feature from 1937; A Charming Tale (But Too Spooky for Some Kiddies).......2007-08-19

Think twice about showing this to very young children. Beware the evil Queen who wants young princess Snow White's heart in a jeweled box. There is a creepy spirit in a mirror, an attempted murder with a knife, a haunted forest, rats, vultures, and a decrepit old hag with bulging eyes and a magic poisoned apple. I only mention this because there are so many parents writing reviews here that did not expect their kiddies to bawl or hide under the bed for two weeks.
Personally, I love villains. And Disney did some great ones back in the day. I still enjoy Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Sleeping Beauty's elegant Maleficent, and 101 Dalmations' Cruella De Vil.

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was Walt Disney's first feature length animated cartoon which started it all, and continued from Pinocchio to Beauty and the Beast, and beyond. There are some wondrous things in this film: the animation is great for its time, the music is fun and sweet, and the whole fairy tale atmosphere is very nicely rendered in delicate watercolor backgrounds, like an old picture book.

I must admit that Snow White's speaking voice (by Andrea Caselotti) irritates me; it's like Betty Boop and Shirley Temple mixed together. But the dwarfs are so much fun, and they save the film from being a melodramatic tale of jealousy and rage. Disney had even dropped two sequences involving the seven little men in order to move the story along better, one being a musical number about soup, and another where the dwarfs build a bed for their new lady friend. There's tons of anecdotes and trivia like this, about the making of the film, in the platinum dvd's bonus features. It is packed with goodies for animation buffs and film junkies.

The movie seems old fashioned and cliched by today's standards, as it is seventy years old. The current generation may find "Snow White" much too sugary and operatic (even with the chills and thrills of the evil queen) compared to more recent animated fare such as Shrek or Finding Nemo. But this is still a charmer, and it's just amazing how the artists captured emotions in these drawings: The dwarfs weeping at Snow White's vigil (note the candle wax dripping), Grumpy eventually coming around to care about Snow White, and Dopey trying to get the only cushion to sleep on before the others discover it. All in all, still a wonderful movie.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Hoped For.......2007-07-30

This DVD is fantastic! It has everything on it I had hoped for. I was a little concerned that the copy I purchased would not have the "Goddess of Spring" feature it claimed to have, and so I was delighted when it did. The person who sold it to me was very prompt about shipping the DVD and answering my e-mails. I greatly appreciate the effort put in to selling me this item. As a life-long fan of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," I am very happy with this purchase. I'm sure any other "Snow White" fan will be too.

5 out of 5 stars Disney's best animated feature film........2007-07-08

At long last I have a copy of the edition of Snow White I have been waiting for. But no thanks to the Disney people. If they had their way I would be in my grave still waiting for them to reissue the platinum edition. For those of you who are young enough to wait, the wait will be worth it. Last November
I turned 80. Disney averages ten or more years re-releasing Snow White and
The Seven Dwarfs.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible doing business with you.......2007-06-18

One star is actually very generous! I waited over 3 weeks after placing my order to contact the seller. His response to my inquiry of the shipping information was "Please allow 2 weeks for delivery". He didn't even take notice of the attachment containing the original invoice that showed we were already past that delivery date. I sent another email pointing this out, and again, I asked for the information of when and how the item was shipped. We are 9 days past that email, and I haven't heard a word. BUYERS BEWARE

Also, this was supposed to be a birthday gift for my 4 year old...maybe it will make it by Christmas!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "With A Smile And A Song" ~ The Birth Of An American Dynasty .......2007-04-07

To truly appreciate this film one should remember that `Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was released in '37 making it's production an incredible achievement in animation considering the overall state of the art at the time. This film was the spring board for the many Disney classics to follow in the years ahead making it a classic by that standard alone.

However having that said, after all these years the film can still stand on its own merits. The animation is enjoyable, the soundtrack is enchanting, at times haunting and the seven dwarfs are beloved by millions around the world. It may not be technically the best of Disney's animated films but it was the benchmark of all that was to follow and still has a loyal fan base after all these years. A true classic.

4 out of 5 stars The One That Started It All And Still The Fairest In The Land........2007-06-15

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 2-Disc Disney DVD is a spectacular creation and an excellent use for the DVD format. I am a 15-year old boy and this movie still amazzes me every time I watch it. It is a loving fairy tale and this dvd makes it even better. On the first disc you have the movie digitally restored, not the best, but read more about this below. There is "Still The Fairest Of Them All: The Making Of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs." There's an Animated Short: Goddess Of Spring, and much more. On the second disc you will see: abandoned concepts, restoration, the history of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, many galleries, filled with thousands of photos, deleted scenes, "Disney Through The Decades"-a timeline of Disney, posters, trailers, vintage audio, production photos, and many, many more.

Now ther is one inconvenience: the restoration. We all agree Snow White looks better than ever, but there were some errors I noticed. For one thing the sound restoration. If you look at the scene where snow white is at the cottage, she says, "I know. We'll clean the house and surprise them" Then there is a little static, then she says, "Then maybe they'll let me stay." Then ther's the picture quality. The picture looks better than ever, but still there many errors that I saw, but I'll only point out a few of them. There's this one scene when the dwarfs are lookin at Snow White when she's sinnging "Some Day My Prince Will Come." I you look at the bottom left corner of the screen there is a green spot that is on the screen. There is also this one scene when the witch is getting into her boat. When she does, it shakes and white puffiness comes onto the stone walls. There is also dirt scattered throughout the film. Some are noticeable some you have to look at for a feww seconds to see them. I think this dvd is the best, but I think they should re-release it with it re-restored. But I still love the dvd, and everything in it too. The best ever.

5 out of 5 stars The One That Started It All........2007-06-02

Snow White, as many people know, was Walt Disney's first animated feature, and many people still hold it dear to their hearts.

It's the story of a girl, who's wicked stepmother, the Queen, has forced her to become a servant in her own castle. The Queen has a Magic Mirror, which speaks to her, and answers her question, "who is the fairest of them all?"

While the mirror had always answered her that she was, it one day answers Snow White. The Queen, being the jealous woman she is, sends her huntsman to kill Snow White. He can't bring himself to kill her, so she runs away, and finds herself at the cottage of the seven dwarfs.

The dwarfs take her in, and she promises to cook and clean for them. The Queen finds out that she's alive, and sets off to kill her herself.

The movie does have it's scary parts, the dungeon scene, the forest scene, and its final battle between the dwarfs and the Queen. But of course, like all Disney movies, it has a happy ending.

The two-disc platinum DVD release is the best yet, with lots of bonus features, including a half hour documentary "The Making of Snow White," sing-alongs, music videos, games, commentary, an animated short, virtual galleries, story lines not used in the film, deleted scenes, trailers for the original and re-releases, and, my favorite bonus feature; "Disney Through the Decades," a look at Disney's animated film history from Snow White's release to the new century.

5 out of 5 stars Snow White's dream comes true!.......2007-04-12

Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs is simply enchanting. We got the DVD a few months back, but just saw it with a group of children that were visiting and chose this to be the entertainment of the night. The quality is superb, the sound magnificent. Soon we found ourselves immersed in the story of a queen who is vain and wicked, trying hard to forever be the fairest in the land.

Snow White grows to be a very beautiful princess and soon, the enchanted mirror tells the Queen that she is no longer the most beautiful, the title now goes to Snow White.

Jealousy and envy drive the queen to attempt to eliminate the fair princess. Snow White meets the seven dwarfs, who live in the forest, and we find ourselves singing right along with them... "Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, It's home from work we go, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho."

The creatures of the forest are marvelous as they help Snow White with daily chores. Some of the most endearing moments in movie history. In the end, love saves the day... and Snow White has her dream come true. Unforgettable song: "some day my prince will come, some day we'll meet again, and away to his castle we'll go, to be happy forever I know."

"Some day when spring is here, we'll find our love anew, and the birds will sing, and wedding bells will ring, some day when my dreams come true!"

5 out of 5 stars Gift purchase.......2007-01-15

This was a gift order for my niece. Once again, as with all products purchased from Amazon.com, the DVD arrived well packaged and in time for Christmas. My niece is very happy and satisfied with this product.

5 out of 5 stars For Your Princess.......2006-09-26

It's so wonderful to live in a time when Disney's strange behavior of taking their classics off the market can be circumvented by great Internet marketers like Amazon. I was able to buy this 5 Star Disney Princess classic recently for my young princess through one of Amazon's third-party sellers. And without that opportunity, my little princess may have outgrown Snow White by the time Disney released it again.

Let me just say that my little one was absolutely captivated by Snow White, and to think that she would be deprived by Disney itself from seeing it at her perfect age is criminal.

The story is familiar enough to any parent, so I won't go on about that other than to say that of all the Disney Princess classics, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty have some scenes that might scare a young princess under the age of 5.

But you should take advantage of purchasing Snow White or any of the other "off-the-market" Disney princess classics like Beauty and the Beast now via one of this site's resellers if you have a little princess of your own that might not appreciate it as much when Disney decides that it's time.

And indeed, you will enjoy Snow White or any of the other Princess classics as thoroughly as your young one.

Side Note on Resellers: Beware of exorbitant reseller prices; renting may be a better option if available. Also beware of REGION 2 resales; Region 2 DVDs will not play in most US DVD players. Look for Region 1 US Amazon resellers.

Tod Browning, who directed Bela Lugosi in the original Dracula, stepped into even eerier territory with this 1932 story of betrayal and retribution in the circus. Evil trapeze artist Olga Baclanova seduces and marries a midget in the circus sideshow, hoping to inherit his wealth. But in doing so, she has crossed the wrong folks: the tightly knit group of nature's aberrations, who stick together like family--and who set out to avenge their little pal. Browning brought in some of the most famous sideshow attractions of the era, include Siamese twins Daisy and Violet Hilton and Johnny Eck the Legless Boy, as well as Zip and Pip, microcephalics whose appearance in this film inspired cartoonist Bill Griffith to create his comic strip, "Zippy the Pinhead." So disturbing that it was banned for 30 years in Great Britain. --Marshall Fine

FREAKS! It's one of a kind. FREAKS! Boggles the imagination
FREAKS! Not to be missed. FREAKS! I'm already one so how
bad can it be(don't answer that). Freaks is a wonderful film
it was made in 31 and released in 32. It's the story of
circus/sideshow performers and their lives. You have the caterpiller
man who roles his cigs. with his teeth. Two sisters who are joined
at the hip,one is married and the other one had just got engaged
to whereas the fiance say's to the other sis.husband..I guess
I'll be seeing you around! You have the real life dual sex person
one actor comments..I guess she likes you,but he don't referring
to the same person was funny. This is a movie and in no way a
documenatary on SPECIAL people. It did not last long at the box
office, and was banned in ENGLAND for over 20 years. This movie
has a heart and soul of it's own. Alejandro Jodorsky has stated
in a book on film, that this is one of his FAV. Rarely screened
in the states,it has a cult status of it's own. And was voted
number 1 cult film of ALL time. Come watch the LIL person
pour his heart out to the beautiful trapeze artist..just to
just to...Well I don't want to give away the ending now do I.
NO! You'll just have to buy the movie that John Waters said
ONE OF A KIND. YOU LOVE DAVID LYNCH? YOU LOVE KEN RUSSELL?
YOU LOVE ANDY WARHOL? YOU LOVE TERRY GILLIAM? THEN MY FRIEND
YOU WILL LOVE FREAKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Freaks.......2007-06-20

Reviled and in some places banned on release, Tod Browning's horror classic is like nothing else you'll ever see-bizarre, bold, and altogether brilliant. A standard soap opera premise is elevated by the conceit of "normal" people as villains, "freaks" as heroes. Browning gets the most out of his unusual cast, mostly non-actors, and creates an eerie, chill-inducing atmosphere throughout. Don't miss that knockout climax.

5 out of 5 stars Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us!.......2007-05-31

The Freaks in this movie were not the only things freaky in this movie. One of the funnier scenes in this movie was the party where the Freaks began to chant, "Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us!". How wild and inventive this was. The Freaks in this movie were some unusual people to be sure but they had good hearts. the acting was wooden I suspect but to me it just added to the realness of the movie.

Freaks was a movie about basic good and evil. Freaks showed that those the world considered most different held the same basic humane values most of us hold dear. Yes the unique folk in the movie were different but but they were more humane and honorable than the strong man and trappese artist.

I love this Freaks Movie because, being autistic I like people who are different. I like that this Freaks movie has a very positive message while being lots of fun to watch. I wished we had the complete original version. I pray somewhere a complete original copy with its original shiocking ending is found. My research tells me in the original ending of Freaks the Strong man was condemned to a life as a high pitched sapprano as a result of injury to his, "pride". The lady trapeese artist became a odd ball freak in the form of half Duck half lady.

Enjoy this movie there is plenty of meaning and laughs in the plot.

3 out of 5 stars Freaky!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is not a "OH,WOW! You gotta see this!", but it was definitely a one of a kind. I like how they portrayed the "freaks" as the normal people. It's just overall an interesting movie.

5 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO OTHER LIKE "FREAKS"!.......2007-04-13

This is really a one of a kind movie. Creepy atmosphere abounds in this carnival freak show setting, the use of real "Freaks" adds greatly to this bizarre tale of revenge. The DVD transfer is very good and a worthy purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-06-29

At first, this seemed to be sort of like Everafter was to Cinderella, albeit on the dark side. The whole talking mirror could have been put down to post-partum psychosis combined with the shock of losing a child (and the ability to reproduce). When the actual magic comes into play, it is almost pointless, and I think the movie would have been better if the focus had been on the psychological rather than trying to squeeze in the supernatural.
That said, Sam Neill and Sigourney Weaver are wonderful. The rest of the cast ... not so much. I wasn't impressed with Lilli, Peter or the mildly-scarred hero.
If it weren't for Sigourney Weaver, this would be mediocre at best. It's worth watching for her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Snow White - A Tale of Terror.......2007-05-09

It's dark and has an interesting take on the classic story. Though the back story of Snow's love interest was lacking, it's still a keeper.

Snow's love interest ... I like to think that he was the son of a noble family, and his parents had opinions that others didn't agree with, which is why they were attacked.

5 out of 5 stars Sigourney rocks in Snow White.......2007-02-08

Snow White as it was meant to be. Signourney and Sam are at their best in this dark and scary rendition of Snow White. Not for the faint of heart.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful Cannon MovieTale version.......2007-05-21

It's very rare to have a screen version of SNOW WHITE that tries to stay faithful to the original Grimm Brothers fairytale. This rendition, part of the fabulous Cannon MovieTales series, does tell the story with a faithful eye to the original material.

Young Snow White flees into the forest after her jealous stepmother the Queen (Diana Rigg) tries to have her killed. The girl finds a safe haven with seven dwarfs, but her life is threatened once more when the Queen discovers her hiding-place. After several thwarted attempts to kill her, the Queen conjures up a poisoned apple...

As in the original Grimm Brothers story, this version depicts the Queen in several disguises trying to kill Snow White, using a tight-fitting bodice, a poisoned Japanese hair-comb, and finally the poison apple.

Diana Rigg plays the evil Queen with relish. Nicola Stapleton plays little Snow White, with Sarah Patterson ("The Company of Wolves") playing the older incarnation.

The Cannon MovieTales series was filmed--rather economically--in Israel, where producers had access to a wide range of appropriate locations. Most of the films have now found their way to DVD (the series also includes "Hansel & Gretel", "Rumplestiltskin", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Frog Prince", "Red Riding Hood", and "Beauty & the Beast").

(Single-sided, single-layer disc).

4 out of 5 stars snow white! much better than the disney version!.......2007-01-29

I have seen several version of the beloved fairytale and this has to be the best one i've seen. I enjoy the disney version but this one sticks to the origional grimm story. The queen gets snow white with the corset, the comb, and the apple. I also think the romance is more touching than the disney version and that is what i love about fairy tales. The songs are more catchy as well. I like "everyday","the one i long for",and "let it snow" I have seen this cannon movie tale and sleeping beauty and really enjoyed both and i recomend them to anyone who loves live action fairy tales or at all.

5 out of 5 stars Grimm story reborn........2006-06-26

Brothers Grimm stories are far less cutesy than we think. This version is much closer to the original German story without being quite so grotesque. It is certainly closer (and in a way more interesting) than Walt Disney's version. I don't like the names for the dwarves (there Disney is at least more memorable). The Dwarves are very good, led by Billy Barty. Diana Rigg as the Queen must have loved doing this stuff. She is to the hilt and just shy of over the top. Delightful. The King is okay, the 1st queen not so hot. Young Snow White is just too precious, but the grown up heroine is very good. The songs are okay to very good. They aren't wonderful, but they don't jump out as awful either.

5 out of 5 stars The Fairest One of All!.......2006-05-20

Legendary stars Billy Barty and Diana Rigg bring one of the world's most beloved fairy tales to life in the Cannon Movie Tale, "Snow White." Starring beautiful and charming Sarah Patterson (The Company of Wolves) in the title role as the princess who fled her wicked, jealous, and murderous stepmother's castle as a child, "Snow White" tells the tale of how the princess is taken in by seven kindly dwarfs living in a cottage in the forest. As the dwarfs go off to dig in their mines each day, Snow White cooks and keeps house for years, growing into a sweet and lovely young woman. But, as Snow White grows ever more beautiful, the evil queen grows ever more jealous. Consulting her magic mirror and book of spells for ways to terminate Snow White, the dwarfs must repeatedly undo her vicious magic. It seems the final spell is beyond even the dwarfs abilities to break though. Their only hope lies in a young prince who is returning home from a long journey still seeking a great discovery to satisfy the longing in his heart.

"Snow White" sits among the best of the nine wonderful Cannon Movie Tales, which are among the best live-action fairy tale films available to date. Sticking more closely to the original stories from the Brothers Grimm, "Snow White" and the other Cannon tales mix in simple but fun-filled songs with fantastic casts and writing that blends realism and fantasy seamlessly. "Snow White" features some of the best songs in the lot, and it's clear that Diana Rigg really has a ball with her villainous role. It's so terrific that these childhood favorites many of us remember from the Disney Channel's 1980's and early 90's glory are finally available on DVD (most of them at least). The DVDs include trailers (not sure if these films ran anywhere theatrically), and "Snow White" is the only one of the four that I currently own that is presented in a letterbox format (though not much of one). The Cannon Movie Tales are mostly family fun, though be warned that some can have their scary moments (for example, "Red Riding Hood," my favorite, is done as a werewolf story that at times may be a bit frightening). The other Cannon Movie Tales, all of which I highly recommend, are: Rumpelstiltskin, The Emperor's New Clothes, Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots, Hansel and Gretel, Beauty and the Beast, The Frog Prince, and Sleeping Beauty. Those last two have not yet been released to DVD, and I have yet to see Rumpelstiltskin at any retail stores, though Amazon seems to carry it. I wish to get them all, but currently only own my favorites: Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Puss In Boots (starring Christopher Walken!), and Hansel and Gretel. Fairy tale fanatics should own all these films, and I also highly recommend my top favorites, the Disney animated versions. Also, for a scarier version of Snow White, pick up the outstanding, "Snow White: A Tale of Terror," starring the beautiful Monica Keena. More recommendations: Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre collection (also best known from the Disney Channel airings), Shrek and Shrek 2, The Slipper and the Rose (for a live-action Cinderella), Ever After (another live-action Cinderella), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), Peter Pan (2003), The Wizard of Oz, Return to Oz, and Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965) among others!

5 out of 5 stars snow white.......2006-03-02

When i saw this version of Snow White, it became my vavorite. It brought this fairy tale to life better than I have ever seen,
it stayed with the Brothers Grimm story very well. I have also
seen their Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Rumplestltskin
all of these have been a favorite of mine.

Product Description

There is perhaps no more beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tale than the legend of a beautiful young girl fleeing her home because of a jealous stepmother. Now more breath-taking than any previous interpretation, Snow White: The Fairest Of Them All is a fantasy of truly epic scope. Wonderfully acted and cleverly scripted, this modern retelling introduces such classic elements as Snow White's miraculous birth and the mysterious reason why her father remarries after his wife's death. Miranda Richardson (Enchanted April, Merlin) stars as Queen Elspeth, the beautiful, yet vain stepmother whose desire to be the "fairest in the land" ultimately leads her to conspire to kill any rival for that title. Kristin Kreuk ("Smallville") stars as Snow White, the winsome young princess who is forced to run away into the forest where she finds protection and shelter with a band of peculiar little men. Snow White: The Fairest Of Them All is a magical adventure with such dazzling special effects and unforgettable characters that it will instantly capture the hearts- and imagination- of a whole new generation.

Don't expect to plunk your 4-year-old in front of Hallmark's Snow White and have her come away whistling "Heigh Ho"--it's not that kind of movie. Substitute a kingdom of woeful and broody characters (the fairest-of-them-all contenders and their king, plus a green and warty undead guy) for Sleepy, Sneezy, and company, and the picture, a bleak one, becomes clearer. Call it Snow White noir, but don't call it dull. The actors, including Miranda Richardson and Tom Irwin, suck you into their saga of lust and greed by making despair their specialty, and the visuals crackle with a creepy gorgeousness. Writer-director Caroline Thompson sheared this Brothers Grimm adaptation into shape using the same jagged-edged prettiness she brought to the script for Edward Scissorhands; a similar audience--one that can handle a little less light in its darkness--should stick around for Snow White. -Tammy La Gorce

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Adaptation.......2007-07-29

I had forgotten Disney's adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and even what "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" (1997) was like so this introduced me once more to the story. The first actor I recognized, even under all that make-up, was Clancy Brown playing a genie-type character that was never quite fully explained. He's best known as "The Kurgan" in the first Highlander (1986) movie. Since some parts of this version of Snow White didn't make sense, I afterwards reached into my library and reread the (for all practical purposes) original Brothers Grimm version. I first read "Snow-White and Rose-Red", having missed "Little Snow White" in their voluminous collection of 210 stories. Anyway, I'm fortunate to have read both stories because this Hallmark version follows the original while leaving out some things and adding others. For example, there's nothing about a poisonous comb here and the genie has certainly been added. Snow White according to the Brothers Grimm, is in fact royalty to begin with, unlike her portrayal in this movie. It also takes a bit from the unrelated "Snow-White and Rose-Red" fairy tale i.e. the part about a bear actually being a bewitched prince.

I sort of preferred the original Grimm version of Snow White except for the ending which is better in this TV version, and just about every other on-screen adaptation of Snow White there has ever been, I would imagine. Somehow, the evil queen being made to dance until her death in iron shoes doesn't fit very well with the flow of the story. The evil queen by the way, is Snow White's stepmother. She married Snow White's father after his wife died giving birth to their only daughter. The king's role is virtually insignificant in this movie and one would have to admit even that was probably expanded compared to his role in the Grimm story. Kristin Kreuk, a newcomer to movies at the time, plays Snow White and is an excellent choice despite her slightly oriental looks. I suppose considering Snow White needing fair skin, dark hair and blood-red lips (true to the tale); Kreuk was perfectly cast.

Unlike the Grimm story, she's not a child of seven when all the drama takes place but more like seventeen. She appears very innocent and sweet, looking not unlike the cute baby squirming around in her crib, shown at the beginning of the movie. One could not mistake that she was actually this child all grown up, or maybe not so grown up. Another difference between the original "Little Snow White" story and this one was the final attempt of the evil queen to poison Snow White to death. Here, she takes the form of her alluring "real" mother (played by Vera Farmiga) instead of an old farmer's wife, and feeds Snow White a poisonous apple that finally does her in or so it would seem. Overall a good film with very nice sceneries and beautiful people but a few loose ends that would have been better tied up. I would recommend that viewers also read the Grimm version of the story to get a better idea where all this stuff is coming from and also to have the opportunity to interpret the story for themselves.

4 out of 5 stars A classic revisited with a touch more magic.......2006-11-04

The story of Snow White is one of the most famous by the Brothers Grimm, and this version by Hallmark is probably the most recent revision. It is also the one with the most magic, and is one of Hallmark's better movies. Snow White this time is born of by the prick of a rose on her mother's finger. Childbirth kills the mother and sends the father out into the cold winter with his daughter. Their desperation brings one of Satan's servants to life, who grants the father three wishes (what other number could it be). The first two wishes turn out well, but the third brings forth Elspeth, i.e. the wicked stepmother. Baby Snow White senses the evil stepmother immediately by crying when they are about to touch. What ensues is a lifelong rivalry in which Elspeth uses her magic to slowly take over the kingdom. This includes her mirror, which can fly. The seven dwarfs are not all short, but instead they now represent the 7 colors of the rainbow, and hence can travel across distances by "rainbowing" themselve. Animals of various sorts get involved, and the battle climaxes with the poisoned apple. Elspeth's evil is undone by the love of a prince, and Elspeth herself is taken down by her own evil creations.

The movie is about two hours long, and moves briskly along from one scene to the next. There is no singing, instead the music is orchestral in the style of classical Romance. The cinematography is great and the special effects are quite nice and believable. The overall story is the same as the original Disney version but many of the details have changed to make it quite distinct and unique. Overall, a good movie.

4 out of 5 stars fair and slightly liberated.......2006-07-29

I saw this movie when it first aired on TV and have been looking for it again ever since (so it's been a while since I've seen it). As previously noted the visuals are very nice and the rendition of the story is not bad, but the key part for me was when the Handsome Prince declares his love for Snow White and she lashes back with a speech about how he doesn't know her, he's fallen in love with a vision from across the room. All her life she's been surrounded by people who don't look past the surface of her beauty...

5 out of 5 stars Fairest movie of them all.......2006-06-17

Snow white is my favorite fairy tale, and this is my favorite rendition. It's far closer to the original tale than most, but it addsi many of it's own elements that give it a fresh new approach. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars the best movie.......2005-09-12

this is kind of a remake of the original movie made.
the first time I saw this movie was when it was on TV in the holidays I thought that this movie was grand its one of my many favourite movies its based of the same charactors but the dwarfs names are the days of the week instead of doppy and all that when snow white was born hear mother died and her father was pore so a magic gennie thing came and granted them a wish that they will live in a castle and live happily ever after

This staggeringly gorgeous interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale The Snow Queen began as a concert of the pretty music by Paul K. Joyce. The story is told in broad strokes: A mother (Juliet Stevenson, Truly Madly Deeply) and her daughter Gerda (teen soprano Sydney White, who's been tearing up the musical stages in England) take in a homeless boy named Kay. When Kay disappears, kidnapped by the vampiric Snow Queen (ancestress to the White Witch of Narnia, no doubt), Gerda sets off in pursuit and comes across helpful ravens, talking flowers, moving statues, and benevolent reindeer in the course of her hero-journey. The wholly digital world created for this film is astonishing; much of it looks like hand-painted Victorian photographs, each image suitable for framing. Ironically, as the story grows more magical, the imagery turns more conventionally "fantastic" (the Snow Queen's arctic lair is a bit like Superman's Fortress of Solitude). But the overall texture of the movie is engagingly stylized, with movement that seems staggered yet graceful, like a silent film. The Snow Queen demonstrates that digital technology can make a more ethereal aesthetic as vivid and startling as a slimy alien or a bigger explosion. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale comes to life in an enchanting mix of music and song, live drama and stunning animation. When Gerda and her mother take in the penniless beggar boy, Kay, powerful forces come into play that will take both children on a magical journey and test their friendship to the extreme. One cold winter night a splinter of ice pierces Kay's eye, turning his heart cold and making him angry and unhappy. He is enchanted by the Snow Queen and taken to her palace in the frozen North. Gerda decides that she must do whatever she can to find her friend. Faith, love and courage lead Gerda on a perilous quest through many strange lands. Will the little girl in the red velvet cloak be able to match the power of the Snow Queen?

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful Imagery, but Incredibly Hokey!.......2007-06-27

The only thing good about this movie is how beautiful it LOOKS! It looks like a moving painting, but it is a disapointment with the acting! Fairy tales, at their best, are able to draw in both the young and the old, but this production failed to do that. I could see how childhood innocence was apart of the spirit of the movie, but there was something sooooooo cheesy about the acting, that I'm afraid only preschoolers would find no fault with this film!

    5 out of 5 stars entrancing.......2007-03-11

This movie (suitable for adults, teens, or children) is (with a few changes) based on Hans Christian Anderson's mythical story.

It is a story about becoming bewitched, and it is a bewitching movie. The dreamlike quality of the production takes you in as if you yourself were experiencing an enchanting dream.

Gerda's pure love for her friend Kay is unwavering despite the fact that he changes and becomes "cruel and unkind". When others call him a rascal and naughty and ungrateful, and then forget him, Gerda holds out hope for him, not only by journeying at great risk and suffering to find him, but also by hoping for the return of his true self.

Her love brings forth the goodness in others (like the robber maiden), conquers the icy evil of the Queen, and restores Kay to his true self.

The movie manages to convey these themes of faith and innocence and good vs evil in a sensitive way without being overly sentimental or juvenile.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful painting in motion.......2007-03-08

What an magical rendition of the Snow Queen fairy tale. I have watched multiple versions of the Hans Christine Anderson story and this is by far the most impressive one. It is filmed in such away that you almost appear to be watching an enchanted painting that has sprung to life. The story itself focuses on the trait of compassion, the value of family and the strong pure love of children. Gerda and her mother take Kay in from the cold and give him a warm loving place to live. When the Snow Queen does take Kay, Gerda's love for her adopted brother know no bounds and she sets out after him. Through many fantastic landscapes and after encountering individuals both helpful and hindering, Gerda finds the strength within and does the impossible. A true tale of family love and the lengths at which we go to help those we value deeply.

    4 out of 5 stars With a Twist.......2007-02-08

I truly liked it! It was a little different from other I have seen! Icame to ejoy the way it was presented and it had a little twist of difference when she looking for the boy she befriended. Many differnt travels than otheers I seen. It is a Keeper!

4 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS ANIMATED FILM.......2007-02-06

Imagine all your Victorian styled Christmas cards coming to life and you'll have some idea about the sumptuous animation of this BBC tv movie. Although only a little under an hour long, the movie floats along ethereally with brilliant animation, some Enya-like music (voiced by Gerda, Sydney White) and a fairyland paperweight comes to life. The film almost has a silent movie feel to it, with jerky motions and off-beat colorizations, but it's delightfully entertaning and different.

A little strange but far from unpleasant, Road to Nashville is a glorified gimmick held together by a lengthy parade of country & western hitmakers from 1967. The story, such as it is, finds comic actor Doodles Weaver reprising his popular character, Colonel Beedlebaum, as a bumbling movie producer sent to Nashville in search of talent for a film. While the colonel roams cluelessly through recording studios and rehearsal sessions, we enjoy the smooth artistry of Marty Robbins ("Devil Woman"), the grit of a young, clean-shaven Waylon Jennings ("Anita"), the hillbilly high jinks of Quinine Gumstump & Buck ("Cutting Room Floor"), the robust balladeering of Connie Smith ("Never Get Over Loving You"), and Johnny Cash singing with the Carter Family ("Were You There"). A few other Nashville royals are in fine form: Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, and Lefty Frizzell, among them. --Tom Keogh

A non-movie movie if there ever was one, ROAD TO NASHVILLE is a mid-60's `musical' that features a host of then popular country-western songsters and about three dozen musical numbers. Doodles Weaver carries what little plot this film contains as a Hollywood talent scout who needs to sign a passel of country-western stars for an upcoming movie. Doodles Weaver, comedian, is an acquired taste, but since his between-song scenes last all of thirty to forty-five seconds his ability to wear out his welcome is effectively neutralized.

The big stars include Marty Robbins (who produced the movie,) Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Porter Wagoner, Hank Snow, Webb Pierce, and many others. Save for Bill Anderson (I Love You Drops) and Robbins (El Paso), not many top ten hits are performed. If you're like me and a lukewarm fan of country music circa 1967 this will be a hit and miss affair. I've never been that much of a fan of Webb Pierce or Faron Young, for instance, and sitting through their performances of songs I'd never heard of wasn't a great treat. And, for anyone who's been irredeemably spoiled by CMT and MTV style videos, this heads on, singer-and-guitar-leaning-against-a-prop-fence presentation is going to come across as extremely static and uninteresting.

On the other hand, the young Waylon Jennings in on hand, singing his Bob Dylan's `Ramona'-esque `Anita.' The song was pretty forgettable, but it was cool to see the skinny, beardless Jennings before he went outlaw. And Waylon, along with everyone else, is NOT lip synching, a nice touch even though it might explain the rather poor audio quality. Hank Snow's `I've Been Everywhere" was fun. The show-stoppers, though, were the three songs performed by the traditional country Stoneman Family (where have they been all my life?) and the Carter Family alone (I Walk the Line) and the perfect, incendiary Johnny Cash/Carter Family rendition of `Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)?'

So, four stars for the stuff I like, a tolerable passing three for the rest of it. If Rhino keeps ROAD TO NASHVILLE bargain priced I'd strongly recommend it to everyone.

Judged by any objective aesthetic criteria this is an awful movie but its parade of the great and the good from country music of its era makes it a pure joy for lovers of the music ; for those who dislike country music and demand movies which are dripping with "sophistication " it will be purgatorial to sit through .

The plot is not so much thin as anorexic -a movie executive of unbelievable stupidity is despatched by his boss to Nshville to sign up acts for a musical about country music .In the process he sees a number of performers and the overwhelming bulk of the picture is of concert footage of these acts .As befits his executive produceer stautus on the movie Marty Robbins gets the bulk of the action ,performing five numbers including Devil Woman and El Paso ,not to mention some dialogue scenes .He is as always an unalloyed pleasure to witness being in fine voice .The star is undoubtedly Johnny Cash .Lokking gaunt and emaciated ,even somewhat scary he performs ,with the Carter Family ,a spartan arrangement of Were You There When They Crucified My Lord in a sepulchral voice that is chilling in its passion ,intensity and conviction .The follow up song ,a novelty ballad called The One on The Right ,while fun ,seems out of place after that highpoint in proceedings .
Good turns from now grievously negelected greats like Lefty Frizzell,Hank Snow and Web Pierce make sure we do not stray too far away from honk tonk heaven .Factor in Connie Smith , Faron Young ,Waylon Jennings (looking almost impossibly young) and some lively modern bluegrass from the Stoneman Family and this is an irresistible package for country music fans who feel this was a great era for the music ,in an age a long way away from the polished "Nashvegas " sound of much modern country .The numbers are unimaginatively shot and the colur is watery but the music is what matters and it is largely excellent

A treat for the ears if not the eyes

5 out of 5 stars "Road to Nashville".......2005-06-11

The quality of the film would normally rate a lower score, but I actually remember seeing this same sort of film quality on the silver screen at movie theaters.

Believe it or not, it wasn't that long ago that we went to theaters which actually charged admission to watch first run motion pictures that were not in digital quality nor in full-surround high fidelity sound.

The main shortcoming of this DVD is that there was no information about the cast and the performers.

The film could have been renamed Road to Nashville History.

5 out of 5 stars The "Bumpy" Road To Nashville........2005-04-18

Watching this reasonable attempt at a movie begs the viewer to reflect just how far Nashville has come with it's entry into mainstream America. First the good news....no make that the GREAT news. The Stoneman family. I never knew Ronnie Stoneman and her luscious sister (is her name Donna) were so talented! They are the surprise of the movie and clearly the most entertaining segments even considering how dated their dance moves may seem. Then there's super hip Connie Smith in a Gold Spandex outfit years before anybody else contrasted by a very unhip Dottie West. Dottie must have seen Connie on the set and said "hot dam....now I get it"! Ralph Emory somewhere near the middle of the movie saves us from Doodles Weaver. In reflection you can see that the days of acts like Faron Young, Hank Snow, and some others presented here complete with covered wagon western motif outfits and insipid lyrics are numbered. Marty Robbins who uses this movie mainly as a vehicle for his crossover career does fairly well. Then there's a scary looking Johnny Cash. I say scary because at this time in his career he still exhibits that explosive volatile musical genius that almost seems caged in this movie. Let's say I would be afraid to take a parking space away from him at Wal-Mart and see him get out of his car and head towards me. Waylon looks and sounds great, Kitty Wells (surprisingly not so great) and most of the other acts are...well....sorry to say only fair at best. So why 5 stars? Because of the historical value of looking back in time for what passed as country music and the precursor of what was to come. It's all captured in this technically inferior but fascinating "Hootenanny" style extravaganza! Be prepared to do a lot of scanning with your remote!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Value.......2007-03-09

Of course, everyone (?) knows the reputation of the Great Train Robbery. But the rest of the package contains some gems. Surprising DW Griffith Western, in "Battle...," in the sense that the cavalry does NOT arrive in the nick of time for most of the townspeople, though the stars are saved. The Tom Mix feature is really funny, showing a character who is quite anti-heroic, by Classic Western standards. But the real gem is William S. Hart's Tumbleweeds, which stages an incredible Oklahoma land run, and a stunning ride by 55-year-old Hart.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Tarin Robbery.......2007-03-08

A classic of the start of motion pictures by Thomas Edison that has stould the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars The first American Movie.......2005-01-24

Its hard to believe but this film was made more than 100 hundred years ago,it has to be considered to be a technical step forward for its time. The plot is basicilly a train robbery. It is also the first western. This was a stepping stone for what movies could be, D.W Griffth pushed even farther with the first epic with a Birth Of A Nation.

5 out of 5 stars Superb quality and great value.......2004-02-01

Wasn't to sure what to expect quality wise but on viewing was absolutely delighted.

Tumbleweeds is the 1939 reissue and has W S HART speaking of his love of the west.
Battle of Elderbush Gulch is an exciting story by D W Griffith.
Heart of Texas Ryan stars Tom Mix.
Two versions of the title film are included.
All the films have short intros, history and bios.

If you love silent films grab it while you can !

5 out of 5 stars Here thar' be (diapered) dwarves!.......2006-01-14

We purchased this DVD a while after it aired on Nickelodeon. We love the DVD and I will explain its features.

In this DVD, Taffy the babysitter tells the Rugrats the classic story of Snow White. Susie stars as Snow White, Angelica stars as the evil queen, and Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Dil, Kimi and Spike star as the 7 dwarves.

From there, the fairy tale becomes an exciting journey, full of fun events and great music. Songs include "Do It Together" and the hilarious "Diaper Factory Song."

Also included on this DVD are 2 episodes from a new Rugrats series "Preschool Daze" featuring Susie and Angelica. We love the episodes and hope these and more will soon air on Nickeloden.

Over all, 5 stars. Simply a must-have for those who enjoy the Rugrats.

    5 out of 5 stars A great movie!.......2005-11-11

If you're wondering that this is going to be just like the regular Rugrats you see on T.V., think again! "Tales from the Crib" gives viewers a new twist on their favorite babies and childhood fairy tales. Taffy, the Rugrats' babysitter, tells the stories to the babies, who give it their own Rugrats twist. In "Snow White", Susie plays the title character, Angelica (of course) plays the evil queen, and the babies along with Spike play the seven dwarves. This is a very good direct-to-DVD movie and will probably never air on television. This is very hard to find in stores and is not available to rent. Also, this DVD features two episodes of the Rugrats spin-off, "Pre-School Daze", which has not yet airred in the U.S. Those episodes are very fun to watch and the theme song is very catchy. I would reccomend this DVD to anyone.
