1 out of 5 stars rodneyb.......2007-04-11

man, this is ia bad(spelled B*A*D!!!)collection.save yourself some money and please don't get this...you've been warned.

4 out of 5 stars Nice mix of classic cartoons........2007-04-08

Most cartoons remind me of my childhood and that's exactly why I got the DVD. I am somewhat of a collector and don't want to forget all the good memories. Production quality is A+. Good mix of cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars great deal.......2006-10-29

this was a gift for my son. he loves these dvds . what a great deal 4 dvds for the price was incredible.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE - EVERY TOON HAS BIG UGLY COMPANY LOGO.......2006-05-19

What a disappointment - EVERY cartoon in this collection has a BIG, UGLY yellow-orange "MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT" LOGO slapped on it! Adding to insult is the fact that some entries (Cobweb Hotel, for example) are so poorly recorded as to be unwatchable: blocky artifacts, flashing, focus problems and more. I threw mine in the trash and will NEVER buy a Mill Creek disc again, ever.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE INTRODUCTION TO 1930s-1950s TOONS!.......2006-04-26

For the price you really can't complain too much. There are about 2/3 of the set that I rate as good cartoons that I'd watch again. Obviously some real clunkers, like THREE STOOGES, the HOFFNUNG & the MR PIPER ones which don't appeal to me liking the bizarre 1930s ones, fortunately there are lots of those on here! Many are typical public domain quality, the worst one is the wonderful COBWEB HOTEL Fleisher Toon which is rough at the start. Some have extra noise too from worn films. 5 stars for 2/3 being good toons & the price.

There are loads of Popeye (23 of them, almost all the post Fleischer ones), just one Casper & Woody Woodpecker, which may disappoint, but the Woody one is a great early 40s one.

BEWARE buying this set if you own the 100 Cartoon collection (with the dog pen drawing on the front) and the 101 Set (from Australia) as these duplicate most of this set. The 101 set copies 75% of this set in the same order!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection of Public Domain Betty Boop Shorts.......2007-06-11

This set is perhaps the best way to get most of the public domain Betty Boop cartoons. The prints and transfers are nicer than most PD collections, and unlike the Good Times DVD's, they don't add extra sound effects to the films. While the famous films featuring Cab Calloway aren't included in this collection, there are still a few of the classic era Betty Boop cartoons with Bimbo and Koko the Clown, like "Is My Palm Read?" and "Betty Boop's Kerchoo". Also included is Betty's color debut, "Poor Cinderella" (in which Betty is a redhead!) Most of the films here are from the post-code era, though, featuring Pudgy and Grampy. At their best, these later shorts are charming and fun to watch. One shot films featured characters from then-popular comic strips, such as Little Jimmy, the Little King and "Henry, the Funniest Living American", as well as a strange Fleisher original, Wiffle Piffle, in "The Hot Air Salesman". Overall, this is a fun collection showcasing one of the most iconic 1930's cartoon characters. The keychain is nice too, made of a high-quality rubber-like material.

    5 out of 5 stars oop oop a doop!.......2007-08-28

I enjoyed these old black and white cartoons. They were hilarious and entertaining. In Betty's day, animation was truly an art form. I highly recommend this collection to any fan of Betty's.

4 out of 5 stars Betty Boop Lovers.......2007-01-31

This collection is a must for Betty Boop fans. This one made a great gift for a lovely friend who collects memorabilia from the Betty Boop era.

5 out of 5 stars not eligible to reeview.......2007-01-14

I do not feel eligible to review either of these Betty Boop Collections
because for some unknown reason neither did not operate on the DVD players we have. I did not return it because I absolutely love Amazon.com and do not hold hold Amazon responsible so I just gave them to a professor friend who probably had a better DVD player and some historical interest in the merchandise

3 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Betty Boop Collection.......2006-12-29

This DVD shamefully turned the only color Betty Boop cartoon back into B & W. So much for historical accuracy. Anyway, my all-time favorite episode is "Minnie the Moocher" with the Full Cab Calloway prelude and song. Where is that?

BTW, I found a cartoon dvd in the dollar section at a local target and it included the original color episode of Poor Cinderella. Not bad for a dollar! :)

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Betty Boop Collection.......2006-02-27

This collection carries it's title for a reason. It is indeed the ultimate. This collection contained fabulous episodes (All 25 of them). It's hard to find your favorite black and white classics with good qualities, but both DVDs had great sound and vision qualtiy which is hard to find in classics. This is a collection that no Betty Boop fan (better yet anyone) should go without.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best.......2007-03-03

Like anyone else who is perusing this product, I am most anxious for someone to lovingly place the Betty Boop collection out on DVD. It is gratifying to find a disc that contains most of the notable collaborations between Fleischer and contemporary pop stars, including Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. These are fine cartoons, just not the best. Anyone who was fortunate enough to come upon the vhs box from more than a decade ago is aware of some of the truly wild and mind melting efforts representing the earliest efforts featuring Betty. But until "Bimbo's Initiation" and "Jippo", etc. find their way into re-distribution, this collection will do.

    5 out of 5 stars a great look at a pre-code betty boop.......2006-06-27

while i never cared that much for betty,my wife likes her and this disc of betty boop(most if not all were made be for the motion picture code was put into place in the 30's) is one she really likes to watch, and so we will cuddle up and enjoy these old but kind of racy cartoons from the past, and as such i don't think these are really ready for your kids yet! this is also something that real movie fans may want to add to their collections also!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Shot of Betty.......2005-12-13

It'a hard to complain much about this DVD, especially at the price of $4.98.
I wouldnt pay more than $12 for this, but it is a good succinct collection
of many musical BBs, and a little bit of racy, anti-establishment, and sexist
material, but done with such aplomb that only a freak would mind it.
The animation is truly amazing. I knew Snow White was good, but the others
are just as incredible. My only complaint would be that the first cartoon is
a compilation episode about Betty's rise, something that should be at the end
of the disc. When it comes on first, its a foggy print with mixed animation and
live action AND its a 'clip' episode. It totally gives the wrong impression of the
whole DVD, which immediately kicks in to crisp, beautifully contrasted and
sharp B&W on the second cartoon, "I'll be glad when you're dead.."
The appearances by Cab Calloway AND Louis Armstrong are impossible to beat
if you have any taste for jazz at all. Recent music videos employt animation,
but its rare to have such a great soundtrack of real historic talent in a cartoon.
When the cartoon isnt sheerly artistic, its very loose and just chill. Its not
grating like so many cartoons can become for adults. The supporting characters
are amazing, and the Tin Soldiers episode in which Betty is a toy is astounding.
The looking glass episode as well is absolutely surreal. You just cant believe the
labor that they put into the detailing of these cartoons and the kind of smoothly
warping motion effects that would probably take digital animators longer with
worse results. This disc will educate and entertain you for 85 minutes.
This is only a sloice, but its of the best ones. Five stars at this price.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE REAL UNCENSORED PRE-CODE BETTY BOOP.......2005-02-02

Amazingly, this disc has some of the musical Betties made before the Hays Office made them put a dress on her. This is the only in-print collection with any of this material...it's made from old TV prints but the quality is pretty good. Well worth the price.

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet Betty!.......2005-01-01

A collection of nicely preserved cartoons, most from the early '30s. Music by Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and the Royal Samoans! Some material not politically correct but if you can lighten up enough to enjoy it, you will. The best compilation that I've seen yet.

5 out of 5 stars best that I own, very good quality and sound very entertaining........2007-06-18

I love this dvd, my husband even watched it several times, and enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars fine if you like cute/slapstick cartooons.......2006-06-13

no question. the fletscher bros. betty boops are genius.

however, what these cartoons were best at was not just providing 7 minutes of goofy antics. this is pre-code surrealism. before cartoons were strictly for kids. alice in wonderland before disney.

the "definitive collection" on VHS (pre-DVD) was fantastic: bimbo's initiation, any rags, barnacle bill, red hot momma. it was also closed captioned. (basically the scripts). would have been wonderful if they simply could dump it onto the new media.

these titles (what makes betty boop arty masterpieces and not more of the cute tweety bird for kids slapstick) are not currently available however in any DVD sets. and though this release claims to, there are no English subtitles or closed captioning. (a lot of titles on Amazon are either incorrect or inexplicit in this regard. watch out.)

there ARE some fantastic examples of rotoscoping techniques (particularly of cab calloway) that are worth seeing. the visceral impact of the animation is startling.

the most interesting bb's are before '33, before grampy and pudgy. if you like happy-go-lucky nice fun, these do try (though not as well as bugs or mickey). imagine bugs, woody woodpecker and spoonge bob on halucinogenics, turned up about 4 times. the bb's are an important historical point in cartooning, but these aren't really archives of that, mostly just entertainment for kids to watch. hope they do justice too her some day.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but the best Betty Boop DVDs yet.......2005-01-21

This is the best Betty Boop DVD set currently available, as it contains most of Betty's highest regarded shorts, including all three with jazz legend Cab Calloway (Snow White, Minnie the Moocher, & The Old Man of the Mountain). If the storylines seem vague and abstract, that was the point. Not only do they contain not-so-subtle drug references (listen in songs for "smokey", "cokie", & "kicking the gong [heroin] around"), but they also evoke a surrealism one normally associates with haute culture filmmakers like Luis Bunuel. And the great thing about this is you can watch it with your kids while they just enjoy the pretty images without a clue!

On the down side, the DVD won't allow any monkeying with the time view, has no subtitles which always help with the poor audio from early talkie cinema, makes you look at their annoying Platinum Video interlude between each episode, and the image quality is inferior to the earlier Goodtimes Betty Boop DVD releases. But this is the best set yet available on DVD and it's so cheap you really can't lose by just buying it right now.

Betty Boop "The Worlds First Female Superhero"

I have noticed some mixed reviews about this product with most of the negative ones being ghost written by our competition so i wanted to tell everyone the real truth about this product since we are the people who produced it. I am using my wifes Amazon account to post this.

We have taken some of the greatest classic cartoons ever produced, from some of the greatest animators in history, and meticulously added hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars of detailed restoration to both the sound and images in order to make them look as good as they did the day they were first released. Each cartoon is digitally processed first through photo shop frame by frame, and then using both the Davinci and the new Pogo systems to remove every scratch, line, dropout and artifact possible. We then we do a full color restoration at Technicolor using the original color palates to match the colors, tones and shades. We then digitally clean up the sound track to remove all the hiss and scratches and carefully add new foley sound effects, ambience and digitally remix them back onto the cartoons.

The result is our animated DVD series which is currently distributed in both the United States and Canada by Goodtimes Entertainment. These fully restored, full motion, color animations have not been seen in this condition since their original theatrical release. Sit back and be amazed and enjoy some of the finest and funniest animation ever made.

thats why were to only studio doing these that have the blessing and participation of Fleischer Studios and the only one to receive the prestigious Gold Medal from the Classic Animation Preservation Society.

I highly recomend this product to any lovers of classic animation.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection of middling Boop.......2004-04-22

This collection features 10 cartoons from the period 1935 to 1939. As such, these are not "classic" Betty Boops by any means -- the classic 'toons ended in 1934. But these cartoons are still enjoyable (at least none of them feature Betty's insufferable dog Pudgy) & the Good Times transfers are very good.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best Material but a Good DVD at a Great Price.......2004-04-20

This is a collection of 10 Betty Boop shorts, all from the post Hays-Code era. The Hays-Code was the predecessor to the Motion Picture Association of America rating system (which wasn't adopted until 1968). The code was brought into being by complaints from moralists that Hollywood was corrupting the young (some things never change) with the glorification of violence, crime, sex, and drug abuse, especially in gangster films. They were also upset about presentations of homosexuality and interracial mixing. The code was also brought about because Hollywood feared the growing power of FDR's Washington. Without this form of self-censorship, FDR would almost have certainly signed legislation to control or censor Hollywood, if he didn't try to nationalize the industry altogether!

The code was established in 1930 and it began to be effectively enforced in all Hollywood studios by 1934. What that meant for Betty Boop was no more drug references, no more overt sexuality, no more singing with Cab Calloway (a black man), longer skirts, boring new characters (like Grampy and Pudgy), and generally less fun all around. Its no surprise then that all her best shorts were pre-code.

These 10 Hays-Code episodes aren't the racy classics that Dad would enjoy watching alone, but they are great to watch with your kids. They are all pretty entertaining, save the last two with Grampy. #8 is somewhat offensive in its depiction of Native Americans, but its Betty's final film and has a little bit of that jazziness that had been missing for years. Here are the episodes included in order:

    1) Judge for a Day, 1935
    2) Betty Boop and Little Jimmy, 1936
    3) No! No! A Thousand Times No!, 1935
    4) Betty Boop and the Little King, 1936
    5) The Hot Air Salesman, 1937
    6) Stop That Noise, 1935
    7) Musical Mountaineers, 1939
    8) Rhythm on the Reservation, 1939
    9) A Song a Day, 1936
    10) The Candid Candidate, 1937

For the serious Betty Boop fan, one should probably wait for the "Definitive Collection" to reach DVD, probably at the $80-$100 range for the complete collection. For those of us who aren't so enthralled by the idea of 13 hours of Betty Boop for $100, a "best of" collection in some 90 minutes would be an ideal preference. In the meantime you might as well pick this up... its an entertaining introduction to a 30s pop culture idol and its a veritable steal at this price. The image is remarkably good for a DVD of this price and the sound is probably as good as it was in the theatres back then.

2 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Titled Pudgy's Wildest Adventures.......2004-04-20

This is a collection of 10 Betty Boop Shorts from the post Hays-Code era. The Hays-Code was Hollywood's self-censorship mechanism which was eventually replaced by the Motion Picture Association of America rating system (G, PG, R, etc). Anyway, Betty Boop was basically ruined by the Hays code: it robbed her of much of what made her special (most notably her short skirts!). Here are the episodes included in order:

      1) You're Not Built That Way, 1936
      2) Training Pigeons, 1936
      3) Pudgy Takes a Bow Wow, 1937
      4) Pudgy Picks a Fight, 1937
      5) My Friend the Monkey, 1939
      6) Baby Be Good, 1935 (1 of 2 pudgy-free episodes)
      7) A Language All My Own, 1935 (the 2nd)
      8) A Little Soap and Water, 1935
      9) Not Now, 1936
      10) We Did It, 1936

Anyway, these 10 episodes are a pretty poor sampling of Betty's work, even by Hays-Code standards. She hardly even appears; Pudgy is in 8 of the 10 episodes and owns each one of them almost entirely. Betty only gets a chance to shine by hopping a plane to Japan in #7. If you just want to get a sampling of Betty, check out the other Good Times DVD, "The World's First Female Superhero". If you want to see it all (including her best early episodes), wait for the "Definitive Collection" to come to DVD. If you have to have this, buy it in the dual packaged edition with the "World's First" disc also available here on amazon.

3 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST - NOT COMPLETE - BUT FUN TO WATCH.......2007-04-14

Considering that Betty Boop cartoons are over 70-years old, they look good for their age (including Betty). Most versions we see today were edited for television to meet morality code standards and distributed by U. M. & M. TV Corp. The cartoons themselves were mostly Paramount releases. Betty ran between 1931-1939 and several titles have fell into public domain though Viacom is supposed to be the official owner of Betty.

What you get on this disc is a mixed bag of 11 cartoons but does include the elusive and highly sought after "Minnie The Moocher". The down side is that the Platinum Disc intro plays before each and every cartoon even if you select "play all". And they have a watermark that comes up periodically that isn't overly distracting but befuddles me as to why they do this when all here are basically public domain titles? Transfer quality is normal for Betty cartoons with no restoration.

Titles include: She Wronged Him Right / BB & Grampy / Minnie the Moocher / Musical Mountaineers / Stop That Noise / Swat The Fly / BB & The Little King / Happy You and Merry Me / House Cleaning Blues / The Impractical Joker / BB & Little Jimmy.

There was a Republic VHS and Laser Disc release long out of print that included all of Betty's titles but rights have switch hands and no news about a DVD set containing unedited versions any time soon from Paramount or any other outfit.
