The Zorro brand of hot-blooded derring-do returns with The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. Banderas and Zeta-Jones flash a bit of their considerable charisma, but by and large they (and the movie as a whole) are on autopilot. Not awful, but lacking any real spark. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars It's more suitable for kids than adults.......2007-06-28

The action scenes are childish and funny. The plot is just an excuse to joke around. It's still enjoyable and worth watching once. The Mask of Zorro is much more exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to Watch If Relaxed.......2007-06-22

Antonio Banderas is a wonderful actor (not to mention the prowess of Catherine Zeta-Jones), so I knew from the start that there was a good chance I would like this movie. At the beginning the action sword fighting and running scenes are rather unrealistic, but I thought enjoyable to watch.

It's not the deepest drama or action movie you will watch, but that is just fine if you go into this movie for more of an "easy-to-watch" action/comedy.

When you sit down to watch this movie, please be relaxed. It's just a movie, and if you start to think of the historical inaccuracies you might become very frustrated. Some examples are (don't worry, no real spoilers)
*Keep in mind, this movie takes place in 1850
1) Abraham Lincoln appeared at the end - (Lincoln was president 1861-1865)
2) There is some talk of the Confederacy - (Confederacy was formed in 1861
3) General Bouregard meets an untimely demise - (He died in 1893)
Have fun and find more on your own.

If you like light, easy to watch movies - buy
If you like light movies but don't want to buy unless it's great - rent

5 out of 5 stars Legend of Zorro.......2007-05-07

This is probably one of my favorite films and I ordered this on DVD, as I only had it on VHS and it has been watched MANY times. I love the actor, like who wouldn't, unless they were dead or in a coma. The action and story are great, with LOTS of action and humor that I really liked. I,
also, have the sequel and TRULY hope there will be more to come.

3 out of 5 stars The Horse And The Kid Steal The Show.......2007-04-27

This review refers to the Widescreen Special DVD edition of "The Legend of Zorro"...

Kids will have no trouble sitting through this less then worthy sequel to the 1998 "Mask Of Zorro". With it's PG rating it has lost the fire and passion between the stars(Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones) and the storyline. It was definitely lacking in several areas that fans might have expected to find. There was plenty of swashbuckling action, explosions and acrobatics to keep the younger set invovled, but a bit lackluster and predictable. On the up side, it's worth the view as in the sequel to "Romancing the Stone","Jewel of the Nile" we have already come to love these characters and it's nice to see the story continue.Only not as good as Jewel. It did provided a few very funny moments that were mostly provided by the horse(think "Cat Ballou"), and the young son of the De La Vega's was a charmer and added a reason to care about what happens to the family.

The story picks up ten years after the first. California Statehood is in need of Zorro's help. The people want it, but there are a few who will stop at nothing to block it. These men are dangerous and evil and their plans include terrorizing and destruction. Meanwhile the De La Vegas are having problems of their own. Elena tells the big Z she wants him home, it's too risky for him to continue his heroic ways, and their son needs him to be a father. Zorro's first priority is the people, so Elena calls it splitsville. When Alejandro/Zorro, see her involved with the man who is behind all the evilness, he falls apart. But when his son and wife's life are in jeopardy, he heeds the call to action once more. It is then we see some of the sparks fly between the two. In a PG manner of course.

The DVD is gorgeous. Beautiful picture in anamorphic widescreen, great sound and some great special features. Commentary, deleted scenes, Behind the scenes featurettes, English and French subtitles(although I thought it strange there are no Spanish subtitles). There is also a full screen edition available for those who prefer.

Banderas and Zeta-Jones, although nice to look at just seemed to lack the chemistry in this one. I also very much missed the presence of the great Anthony Hopkins. After all saving the family AND the people of California all at once, could take a Knight in shining armour.

The first Zorro was a film I could watch over and over. This one, clocking in at just over two hours, had just a few to many Z's for me...Zzzzzzzzzzz, a bit of a snooze-fest. But I think it may be a good rental for that rainy day when the kids are cooped up in the house......Laurie

2 out of 5 stars Silly, Just Silly.......2007-04-14

There is only one word to describe this flick - SILLY. Good for 10 year olds and younger. Story weak. Acting mediocre. The action sequences look very "staged" and unnatural and are unbelievable. One glaring error. This movie is set in early California, before it becomes a state. Near the end of the film they show an American flag - and it has 50 STARS on it!!! Mama Mia!! Couldn't even get that right. The title should have been "The Legend of Zero".

Film buffs may remember the tangled tale of competing Robin Hood projects in 1991. Kevin Costner, riding high from his Oscar wins for Dances with Wolves, had his pick of projects at the time, and he juggled his interest in parallel Hood films that were under development at different studios. Costner chose Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, of course, directed by his friend Kevin Reynolds, while the other production (the one described here), attached to veteran British director John Irvin (The Dogs of War), ended up on cable television with another Yank, Patrick Bergin, in the lead. Comparisons were inevitable, even though the two films were very different from one another. A little harder edged and more surprising than Reynolds's work, the Irvin-Bergin movie made all that medieval heroism seem more an effort of the heart than previous versions. Roughing things up a bit is Uma Thurman as a bratty Maid Marion, not quite the traditional damsel in distress of yesteryear. Irvin keeps the adventure quotient up, but this is simply a darker, grittier variation on the old tale. With Jürgen Prochnow, Jeroen Krabbé, and Conrad Asquith. --Tom Keogh

Description

The Swashbuckling legend of Robin Hood unfolds in the 12th century when the mighty Normans ruled England with an iron fist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bullseye! .......2007-07-29

The best movie version of this tale by far. The acting, directing, especially the stage direction, the incredible camera work, the splendid screenplay, and the witty dialog blend artfully with the production to create magnificent historical verisimiliture (do read John Holt's Robin Hood). There is a wonderful cameo by Edward Fox as Prince John, which by itself is worth the price of the film.

3 out of 5 stars Robin Hood - Patrick Bergin.......2007-06-17

This product did not live up to the Robin Hood that I remember such as The Adventure's Of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn & Olivia De Havilland (1938) and Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves with Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (1991) these two are 10's. but this Robin Hood with Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman I would rate as a 3 it was medi-oaker.

5 out of 5 stars A good take on the legend.......2007-03-17

This version of Robin Hood puts the conflict on a local level rather than a national level, like most of the other tellings of the story. Robin is battling the evil in his own backyard, rather than dealing with the wrong doings of Prince John and the absence of Richard the Lionheart. I think Patrick Bergin did a wonderful job as Robin Hood and I think Uma Thurman gives my favorite performance as Marian.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Hood.......2007-03-12

The best Robin Hood movie ever! Patrick Bergin is excellent; has such a twinkle in his eye! The movie just gets better and better with repeated viewings!

5 out of 5 stars A uniquely real Robin Hood.......2007-03-08

Real-seeming people in real-seeming situations. The best I have ever seen.

An old fossil.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Dashing Errol Flynn is the definitive Robin Hood in the most gloriously swashbuckling version of the legendary story. Warner Brothers reunited Michael Curtiz, their top-action director, with the winning team of Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) and perennial villain Basil Rathbone as the aristocratic Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and pulled out all stops for the production. It became their costliest film to date, a grandly handsome, glowing Technicolor adventure set to a stirring, Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The decadent Prince John (a smoothly conniving Claude Rains) takes advantage of King Richard's absence to tax the country into poverty but meets his match in the medieval guerrilla rebel Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, who rise up and, to quote a cliché coined by the film, "steal from the rich and give to the poor." Stocky Alan Hale Sr. plays Robin's loyal friend Little John (a part he played in Douglas Fairbanks's silent version), Eugene Palette the portly Friar Tuck, and Melville Cooper the bumbling Sheriff of Nottingham. Flynn's confidence and cocky charm makes for a perfect Robin Hood, and his easygoing manner is a marvelous counterpoint to Rathbone's regal bearing and courtly diction. The film climaxes in their rousing battle-to-the-finish sword fight, a magnificently choreographed scene highlighted by Curtiz's inventive use of shadows cast upon the castle walls. --Sean Axmaker

    Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
James Cagney thrills in a rare (and limber) song-and-dance performance as composer-entertainer George M. Cohan. This nostalgic biography is told in flashbacks, covering Cohan's formative years becoming Broadway's brightest star and touching upon his loves, musicals, and artistic triumphs. Director Michael Curtiz (The Adventures of Robin Hood) offers Cagney ample opportunities to invent an utterly charming performance in what is practically a one-man show. If you've never seen Cagney as a hoofer, you're in for a treat: his dancing is as dynamic as anything else he's ever done on screen. --Tom Keogh

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
Ranked at No. 30 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 all-time greatest American films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a genuine masterpiece that was, ironically, a box-office failure when released in 1948. At that time audiences didn't accept Humphrey Bogart in a role that was intentionally unappealing, but time has proven this to be one of Bogart's very best performances. It's a grand adventure and a superior character study built around the timeless themes of greed and moral corruption. As adapted by writer-director John Huston (from a novel by enigmatic author B. Traven) it became a definitive treatment of fate and futility in the obsessive pursuit of wealth. Bogart plays Fred C. Dobbs, a down-and-out wage-worker in Mexico who stakes his meager earnings on a gold-prospecting expedition to the Sierra mountains. He's joined by a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston, the director's father) and a young, no-nonsense partner (Tim Holt), and when they strike a rich vein of gold, the movie becomes an observant study of wretched human behavior. Bogart is fiercely intense as his character grows increasingly paranoid and violent; Huston offers a compelling contrast as a weathered miner who's seen how gold can turn men into monsters. From its lively opening scenes (featuring young Robert Blake as a boy selling lottery tickets) to its final, devastating image of fateful irony, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre tells an unforgettable story of tragedy and truth. With dialogue that has been etched into the cultural consciousness (who can forget the Mexican bandit who snarls "I don't have to show you any stinking badges!") and well-earned Oscars for John and Walter Huston, this is an American classic that still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon

If you want to see 3 of the best classic films ever made by Hollywood, look no further! Bogart, Flynn and Cagney!

With these, you can't go wrong! A really great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Warner Bros. Legends Collection now on restored DVD box set........2003-11-03

Congratulations to Warner Brothers Studio for not only digitally restoring their classic movies but releasing them under the "Two-Disc Special Edition" Series. Now in addition to the two-disc sets they now box (for the first time) their 3 very best films into the "Warner Legends Collection".

All 3 movies are outstanding and are timeless classics. The American Film Institute (AFI) voted all 3 films into the greatest films including top 100 film circa 1998 for "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" & "Yankee Doody Dandy" (James Cagney received Best Actor Oscar).

"The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) with legend star Errol Flynn remains the best film even today depicting this fictional hero. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" Hollywood legend James Cagney in his Oscar winning song & dance man (as George M, Cohan) performance. "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1947) starring film legend Humphrey Bogart (many say this was his best role) is a western about gold treasure and what it does to man.

What makes this "Two-Disc Special Edition" Set so great? Each film has an all-new digital transfer from restored picture & audio elements. Disc 1 in this series includes; Each film has a unique "Night at the Movies" introduction by Leonard Maltin. Warner Brothers has provided the viewer with a complete specialized movie program circa the year each movie feature was made. First off, coming attractions, newsreel, Bugs Bunny Cartoon, Short Subject Film and finally the Main Feature presentation. This is an awesome treat!!!! Thank You, Warner Brothers Studio. Also you have up to 12 legendary star film trailers. Finally a full feature commentary. That's only Disc 1.
Disc 2 - has over 3 hours of extra features to include; documentaries, radio shows presentations, galleries of art/photo/publicity, cartoons, cast & crew, & vintage shorts.

With this "Warners Legend Collection" box set you get a bonus 7 disc, "Here's Looking At You, Warner Bros." - the history of Warner Bros. Studios. (108 min documentary) excellent bonus!!

All Movies & Extras are Standard Format (4:3 ratio / tv size) Pre- WideScreen 1953. Robin Hood is beautiful TECHNICOLOR. (even today it is still regarded as the best color) Pictures & sound are outstanding. This is a must have collectible box set. I especially love the "Night at the Movies" program. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Really great movies stay great.......2003-10-07

What a collection! Three of the best movies Warner Bros. ever made (and they made a lot) are given the lavish treatment on DVD usually reserved for only special new movies, and I am grateful they did it up right.

Each film is given the 2-disc treatment, with plenty of extras, plus excellent commentaries. I love when they give the classics this much attention.

Oh, there is one drawback...Hollywood, please, no more Leonard Maltin as host of classic DVDs! I know you probably think the public has a recognition of him as a famous movie reviewer, and thus his hosting must be a plus because will buy it, but you would be surprised to see how many of those people are truly, truly sick of him and shun his ever appearance. I know I got fed up with seeing him a long time ago. So has everybody I know. I almost hesitate picking up a DVD if he is anywhere on it. Turner Classic Movies' Robert Osborne is a much better choice for host. Osborne has style, sophistication, and an intelligence that is delivered on a friendly, low-key level. Maltin is too much in your face.

          Description

The MythBusters, Jamie and Adam, two special effects experts with over 30 years experience between them, set out to methodically bust three urban legends in each episode. They will apply modern day science with age-old legends and modern-day myths to prove or disprove what is real and what is truly urban legend. They don't just tell the myths, they'll put them to the test. Episode 36: Can a tissue box become a lethal missile? In KILLER TISSUE BOX, the myth states that, in a car smash, a box of tissues on the rear shelf will be propelled forward with enough force to crush your skull. What they discover-regardless of what the tissue box is doing, you're more likely to be distracted by the engine suddenly coming through the dash onto your lap. In SPLIT ARROW, the build team is trying to emulate Robin Hood. Legend has it that Mr Hood fired an arrow into an opponent's, splitting completely in twin. So Grant builds an arrow-shootin' robot, while Tory and Kari don the appropriate garb and head for a local Renaissance Fair, where they engage some ye olde archers in a contest. Whichever archer can split an arrow will win the MythBusters' coveted Golden Arrow Award. The archers seem more interested in receiving a kiss from the fair mythbustin' maiden, Kari.
