Mastering the alphabet involves much more than recognizing capital letters. Brainy Baby: ABC's offers a healthy dose of phonics and lowercase letter study as well, treating 2- to 5-year-olds to a lesson that proves equally entertaining and educational. The key to this delightful show's appeal stems from an engaging, interactive approach to learning. Vocally introducing each uppercase and lowercase letter pair, sharing each letter's sound (or sounds, as in the case of vowels and certain consonants), and showing examples of words beginning with each letter, a friendly narrator encourages viewers to repeat what they see and hear. Throughout the 40-minute program, playful review sessions help enforce each lesson. Upbeat music and exceptional camera work add to the package, making yet another positive contribution from the award-winning Brainy Baby Company. Favorite extras on the DVD version include a video sing-along and a read-along storybook narrated by a child. -- Liane Thomas
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT EDUCATIONAL DVD.......2007-04-15
I am so thankful to these reviews. They help so much in determining if a product is right for us. After reading all the reviews, I decided to purchase this DVD for our 20 month old son. He had been watching The Letter Factory (which is great) and I wanted to offer him something new. At first, I was worried, as he wanted to watch The Letter Factory, but after sitting through the DVD with him ONCE, from then on, he has been very interested in watching the video. I like it because it's not all hyper. It's taught in a relaxed calm method. No regrets. I LOVE the way they repeat over and over the sounds of the letters. It's an excellent video for learnig the alphabet and letter sounds. A++++ We bought ours directly from Brainy Baby. We didn't want to wait. We received our order within a week.
Great Learning tool.......2007-01-25
If your gonna let your kids watch TV atleast let it be educational. It's a great video. I'm sure it reinforced my son in learning his ABC's.
Great ABC Video.......2007-01-04
My 2 1/2 y.o. loves this video and asks for it often. He now knows all his letters and I believe this video has really helped.
May not be perfect, but my [...] is finally learning to talk........2006-08-25
I agree with most of the other reviewers regarding MOM OF MANY MUNCHKINS review. She was way too critical! For hating the dvd so much, she has it memorized. She is correct about the "uh" sound, but my son has started talking so much since we got this dvd from our local library. He has even started saying complete sentances! Brainy Baby may not be perfect, but they are obviously doing something right. He also watches it from beginning to end without getting bored, and even giggles when the babies giggle. It is very cute! I think they did a great job. We have to remember that this video was made for babies and toddlers, not grown up adults.
My TWO year old knows his letters, but he's learning the sounds wrong!!.......2006-04-06
This review was very difficult for me to write as I have mixed feelings toward the video. As a first grade teacher, I am very critical of anything that requires the very particular and accurate use of phonemic awareness. Unfortunately, as the mom in the last review pointed out, this video has many inconsistencies when the narrator and little girl say their letter sounds. First of all, when saying letter sounds, one NEVER wants to add the sound -uh after any letter!! For example, when saying the sound for "T" we don't say "TUH", we simply whisper it by dropping our tougue from the roof to the bottom of our mouth. Or, we say "W" not by saying "WUH" but by forming the W with our lips, then holding the W sound like wwwwww. Though most of the sounds in this video are correct, they occasionally slip into the "-uh" trap! How on earth are our children supposed to read if they add -uh to every consonant....tell me....for instance, what the heck is puh-a-tuh! (translation without the -uh and you get the word "pat"!)
Now, looking beyond the inconsistencies in pronounciation, I have to say that my 2 year old son LOVES the video!!! I am completely in awe and amazed that within one time of watching it, he repeats EVERY letter as it drops onto the screen. Though I find it terribly repetitive and boring, he is COMPLETELY engrossed!! And you know, HE IS the one who is supposed to love the video (not me!) so I suppose Brainy Baby has hit the mark on that aspect! He sits through the seven minute introduction and is totally aware as each written letter comes on. He enjoys the kids and babies on the screen and it doesn't seem to bother him that there is no real "action" or fun puppets like they have in the Baby Einstein videos. So, as a mother, I am overjoyed that he is enjoying the video, learning his letters AND gaining a nice vocabulary. He is slightly speech delayed, so anything that will help to improve his language awareness is a blessing.
So how do I rate this?? As a teacher, probably no more than a 3. As a mother, I'd have to give this a 5 since my own child is rapidly developing his language awareness just by watching a simple DVD! I haven't watched any other letters video, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Fantastic DVD!.......2007-08-30
I have four kids, and they have all loved this video. The songs are catchy and educational. Not only do the kids learn the letters, but they learn little tidbits like what makes an insect (6 legs, three body sections) and other fun facts. The images are bright and colorful and rival anything National Geographic.
The only downside to this show is just how catchy the songs are. I wake up at two in the morning singing "Ca-Ca-Ca-Chameleon".
They started watching around the age of 2.
must own.......2007-05-09
very educational of animals through snappy songs and educational for letter recognition. great for toddler. You may want to consider the animal counting as well. we own both!
fun and different.......2007-03-19
We originally bought this on VHS for our son and he wore out the tape!! Now that he is older, we purchased this on DVD for our daughter. The tunes are catchy and the animals are not the run-of-the-mill choices, normal in "kids" movies. When our son went to pre-school, all the other kids were saying "D" is for "dog", while he was saying "D" is for "dolphin".
My kids love this DVD.......2007-01-17
Although the animals are quite unusual, my kids (3 and 6) love this video. They watch it over and over and it does sustain their attention. My little one has learned letters watching this video. It exposes them to different animals they would otherwise not know. Great buy.
Pretty cool video.......2007-01-04
This video has 26 songs, one for each letter that says something like "A is for Armadillo" as the chorus. My 3-yr old son asks to watch it, although it doesn't hold his attention all of the way to Z....but, as I mentioned he is 3! I think this is a well done video, the footage is good, the choice of animals is interesting and the songs are cute.
Product Description
ABCs Sing-a-Long is a delightful collection of the most beloved children's songs. These timeless classics include songs like: A Dog Named Bingo, The Eensy Weensy Spider, Eat, Eat, Eat (the apples and bananas song), Ring Around the Rosie, Old MacDonald, Working on the Railroad, and many more! And just like the kids in ABCs Sing-a-Long, your kids will be laughing, singing, and dancing until it's time to settle down for a story break with the everlasting tale of The Hare and the Tortoise. Your children will love being a part of the singing and dancing activities - just as if they were one of the gang in this fun and exciting video!

Appalling.......2007-07-28
As others have pointed out, this DVD looks like nothing so much as a very badly shot home movie, starring the camera operator's family members in various costumes that look like they came out of the dress-up box. The music is equally dreadful, consisting of incredibly cheesy, karaoke/lounge singer-like versions of old nursery rhymes and songs. This is by far the worst DVD I have ever wasted good money on for our toddler. He stared at it for a few moments, and then ignored it. When we asked him if he would like to watch it again (in spite of how ghastly it was - we wanted to get some use out of it) he told us in no uncertain terms that he did not like it, which was a great relief to be honest. Please don't waste your money. You can play dress-ups and make your own amateurish home video for less cash, and you'll probably get a lot more enjoyment out of doing so.
Don't be so quick to judge!.......2007-06-13
While I agree that the video is brutal, my 3-year-old daughter LOVES LOVES LOVES it! She has never been a TV watcher, but this video absolutely enthralls her. She sits and watches it with the biggest smile on her face. She hops like a frog with the kids, she does the eensy-weensy spider, and she jumps over the candlestick like Jack. Mommies, our kid are who they are. We may not understand why they like what they do, but we need to support them in their interests. So-pop in this DVD, sit back, and enjoy this seriously low-budget production with a sense of humor.
WORST KID'S VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!.......2006-12-27
If I could select negative stars I would!! This movie has brought shame to the entire children's movie industry. Even though the DVD case gives a clean, well-produced, educational video impression, DO NOT be so easily fooled!! The movie appears to be a collection of home videos of a group of kids who had a little too much of extra time on their hands. The children in the video do not even interact with the song playing over the audio; they do not dance to it on rhyme or even sing along with it. During story time, the story is read over the audio, but the 'storyteller' in the movie just moves her lips clearly not actually reading the story. As other reviewers have brought up, the face paint was too scary and looked out of place. I am horrified that I even purchased this video and I STRONGLY urge you to refrain from making the same mistake I did!!!
Awful.......2006-05-02
Worst kid's DVD I have ever seen. I could only make it through a few songs before ejecting it and throwing it in the trash. Poorly made (think home video camera) and as another reviewer said, the face painting is a little scary.
Amatuer-ish.......2006-04-04
Video footage looks like it's from someone's home videos. Face painting is a little scary too. Audio is above average but has little coordination with video footage. Kid's may actually watch it a couple times but parents will be not happy with this video.

my 1 year old toddler twins loved this.......2006-07-07
We also rented this from the library and had to rent it again and again until I ordered it. The songs are catchy and fun. I don't think they learned all the letters from this particular video but they did have fun and danced alot.
i don't get it.......2006-01-08
I rented this DVD from the public library hoping my 17 month old would enjoy it while learning some ABCs. When it came on, my child immediately turned away and asked to see Baby Einstein. She likes to see real children and people and objects beeing portrayed on-screen which is why I thought this would be good. The DVD starts with Sharon, Lois & Bram on-stage in colorful getups dancing and singing a superfast rendition of the ABC song that is NOT the traditional one we are all used to. They are in front of a studio audience of children and parents who are also dancing around. It then cuts away to various scenes that fail miserably at trying to present the letters of the alphabet. Most of the scenes don't even make any sense at all and fail at teaching the child what letter they are even talking about. I must say that I stopped the DVD half-way thru when it became crystal clear that my child was not going to sit thru it, and I could barely stand it myself. I am so glad I did not waste my money on this as it would have ended up in a garage sale or donation pile. I think i'll put the money toward another Baby Einstein DVD.
