Description

Original HALLOWEEN star Jamie Lee Curtis (HALLOWEEN: H2O, TRUE LIES) is back and joined by Busta Rhymes (SHAFT) and Tyra Banks (COYOTE UGLY) in the terrifying HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION -- the latest in this electrifying horror film series! The reality programmers at DangerTainment (Rhymes, Banks) have selected Rudy (Sean Patrick Thomas -- SAVE THE LAST DANCE), Bill (Thomas Ian Nicholas -- AMERICAN PIE 1&2), and a group of thrill-seeking teenagers to spend one fun-filled night in the childhood home of serial killer Michael Myers. But the planned live broadcast turns deadly when their evening of excitement becomes a night of horror as Michael himself decides to crash the party!

Amazon.com

Number 8 in the Halloween line maintains connections to John Carpenter's original. Resurrection picks up the thread of Halloween: H2O, with poor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) now in a psychiatric hospital and determined to shut down homicidal Michael Myers once and for all. After this prologue, the story shifts to the old Myers house, where a TV reality show has enticed six teenagers to spend a single night in the spooky home. Needless to say, things are spoiled when Michael barges in: "I so did not sign up for this," sighs the young heroine, when the bloodletting begins. The mayhem is being broadcast live on the Internet, which makes the film a bit like Rear Window with Instant Messaging. The interesting premise is routinely handled, but that's enough to make this one of the better sequels in the series. Maybe they finally finished off Michael in this one, wink wink. --Robert Horton

1 out of 5 stars DONT EVEN WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2007-09-15

Im A Huge fan of the halloween series and i have to say this film is garbage, what kind of movie is this? internet horror? wtf i mean seriously having busta kill mike at the end? whats that all about!. dont even waste your money on this movie. i saw it when it first came in theaters and i laughed during the whole movie... wanna see a halloween movie worth the money? go see rob zombie's halloween atleast hes out killing again like he use to

2 out of 5 stars Too many cliches.......2007-09-02

The first minutes of the film with the final battle between Michael Myers and Laurie were the only high point of this film. After that happened, Halloween series enters the cliche zone. 2000 hasnt been very kind to any horror franchises. Its better then the Rob Zombie remake at least, PLEASE AVOID THAT MOVIE HALLOWEEN FANS! Myers was normal in this movie, the Zombie film made him look like he was on steriods. Probably an ode to the times. I love the Halloween series but I rank this as one of the worst films due to the dumb internet story line. If they ended this with the Myers-Strode finale then this movie would of been good. I know they had to film anther hour and twenty seven minutes of film though.

5 out of 5 stars HE'S BBBAAACCCKKK - MICHAEL NEVER DIES!!!.......2007-08-31

i'm a big holloween junkie, and a big michael myers addict. i love the whole series. this movie is great. there's suspense, thrills, kills. jamie lee curtis a great actress, does her part great. michaels home and those kids are tresspassing so beware!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Comeback!!!!.......2007-08-31

Had Its Moments! Mostley made up for H20. After The CrapFest that H20 was, This was a good attempt. Hopefully Rob Zombie does a Great Job on his Version.

2 out of 5 stars Tries to undo H20...but for what?.......2007-08-05

This movie was a HUGE disappointment. Its predecessor was a pleasant surprise, intelligently resolving (or so we thought) the whole "Halloween" series with a tremendously satisfying confrontation between Michael Myers and his long-suffering sister/prey, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). After that, I am baffled as to why Ms. Curtis (or should I say Mrs. Guest?) took part in this travesty, which undoes the above in ten misery-filled minutes. After which Jamie Lee is not seen again...guess why... Also, Josh Hartnett, as Laurie's son in "H20", isn't even mentioned as the series reverts to one-dimensional, character-free bloodletting. The rest of the movie is typical process of elimination of clueless teenagers, with some not-bad new twists (reality TV and webcams) in the formula. But all is hopelessly tainted by what came before.

In the long run, these series are unrewarding because the villains keep coming back, the heroes never really win, and the victims are never avenged. Unless the next sequel reveals that Laurie Strode survived her injuries, I'm going to consider H20, with its infinitely more satisfying (and logical!) conclusion, to be the end of the series.

Two stars because it's not awful, especially if you're fine with the callous disposal of the human element of the series (Jamie/Laurie) in favor of the faceless Michael Myers machine (and its conducivene$$ to more facele$$ $equel$).

When graphic novelist Aiden (Hugh Dancy) travels to Bucharest to research the loup garou legend, he nearly gets devoured in the latest female werewolf film, Blood and Chocolate. In the tradition of Werewolf Woman and Ginger Snaps, Blood and Chocolate stars Vivian Gandillon (Agnes Bruckner), a girl who's forced to face her lupine tendencies in order to discover how capable of loving Aiden she really is. Based on a book by Annette Curtis Clause, the film chronicles the lives of the remaining loup garou who are an extended Romanian family waiting for their pack leader, Gabriel, to select his new mate. His desire for Vivian means trouble when her wish to be with Aiden results in her revealing too much about the clan's secretive lifestyle. In this film, werewolves look fully human until their eyes glow with colored contact lenses while they fly through the air to then land as full-fledged wolves. Gone are the days, apparently, of films showing the transformation in all its hairy, explosive detail. A lack of scenes describing the werewolf metamorphosis make this film more a love story than a monster tale, though two forest gatherings in which the loup garou hunt human sacrifices offer some grizzly satisfaction. Unlike the aforementioned femme werewolf films, Blood and Chocolate features a girl fighting her urge to kill in a bid to unite humans with her brethren, making this movie the most peaceful in its genre. With a tame wolf as protagonist, the potential nightmare is really just a pleasant dream to unite the two disparate worlds. The question is: Do we want that to happen? --Trinie Dalton

Product Description

As a young girl living in the remote mountains of Colorado, Vivian (Bruckner) watched helplessly as her family was murdered by a pack of angry men for the secret they carried in their blood. Vivian survived the attack by running into the woods and changing into a wolf. Ten years later, Vivian is living a relatively safe and normal life in Bucharest, Romania. Vivian spends her days working in a chocolate shop and nights trawling the city's underground clubs, fending off the reckless antics of her cousin Rafe, and his gang of delinquents he refers to as "The Five."

Vivian's life begins to unravel when she has a chance encounter with Aiden (Dancy), an artist researching Bucharest' ancient art and relics for his next graphic novel. Aiden pursues Vivian until she relents and begins to see him, but she can't bring herself to tell him the truth - and lives in fear of showing him who she really is. Even though Vivian has sworn never to kill, she is as much an animal as she is human, and her love for Aiden threatens to cast him to the very wolves who saved her life and who are waiting for their chance to hunt him as prey.

4 out of 5 stars It's own story.......2007-09-17

I've read the book and saw the movie. I took both as its own story, the movie took the idea from the book yes but twisted the storyline into it's own story, rather weak. The movie itself was beautiful the scenery, etc made me want to be the photographer for it. Shouldn't judge a movie based on what book it came from each is it's own story.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Gothic Wolves!.......2007-09-11

I loved this movie!

I fell in love with it from the first transformation scene!

It was visually gothic in the style of The Lost Boys, The Covenant, Underworld, etc. The wolves (and the transformations of them from human) were GORGEOUS! I was expecting a gory transformation, but thankfully, it was artfully delicate, unforgettable and DIFFERENT!

This movie is great for women who love lushly-scenic, non-gory gothic-yet-modern romances (like me!:)

I wonder how they got so many real tame wolves for the film?

It was quite a treat, watching them perform. They really stole the movie, visually. The director should've focused on more scenes with them, in my opinion.

This one's in my collection and will be watched often!

Never read the book. But I might, now!

Great film for teens and adults.

3 out of 5 stars Warewolf story.......2007-09-10

If you are a fan of the warewolf movies, this one may be for you. I was hoping for much better production though especially with actors like Hugh Dancy and Olivier Martinez. Story is just too predictable and the happy ending totally spoiled the experience. For light entertainment, this one is just right. Do not expect too much and you will be fine. I did like the music in this movie. My sincere compliments to composers and performers.

1 out of 5 stars The movie's horrible, you're better off reading the book!.......2007-09-08

This movie wasn't great at all! It didn't follow the book for one second! I thought this movie would turn out like the book that I read in High School, but it SUCKED! It was like they didn't care enough about the central points that made the book work in the first place. I feel that the movie ripped me off because the characters in it didn't connect to the book at all! First of all, there's Agnes Bruckner, who played Vivian. She looked nothing like the "Vivian" in the book, her agenda and motivation were not the same, her personality was completely different from the book, her performance in the movie was poor in that Agnes just wasn't in character most of the time. The script was very stale and terrible! My imagination longed for more drama and accuracy. The red-haired woman who played Esme` underplayed the character(for whom was the most important hench-villaness in the book). Everybody's acting in this movie was just too flat in general!Whatever you do, avoid this movie like the plague! This movie wasn't even scary or clever. For those of you who loved the book, don't BOTHER with the movie because it's a DEAD END!

2 out of 5 stars They werent really werewolves..........2007-09-01

just regular wolves, and very easily killed. And why, except for two characters, were all of them teenagers? This movie was not as bad as I was expecting, but it could have been so much better.

It's hard to call Detroit Rock City a "coming of age" movie--since it's hard to argue that any of the characters do any genuine growing up. But even though it's about four young metalheads trying to get to a KISS concert, the movie actually has more in common with sincere portraits of adolescence than it does with raucous teen comedies. The four heroes are members of a teen metal band called Mystery (the s is written in the same font as the letters of KISS, lest anyone mistake their source of inspiration). After the drummer's religiously zealous mother burns their tickets to a long-awaited concert in nearby Detroit, the boys go anyway and try to get tickets through theft, skullduggery, and entering a male stripper contest. The jokes are broad and the movie culminates in an orgy of male adolescent wish-fulfillment, but here and there some loving attention is paid to the details of 1970s teenage life--the haircuts, clothes, and toys the filmmakers probably had when they were kids. Edward Furlong, as the band's singer, is his usual scruffy self and exudes his particular lopsided charm; the rest of the cast play their parts with similar high spirits. Though Detroit Rock City was probably meant to be a no-holds-barred comedy in the vein of American Pie, the end result is curiously wistful; no one's going to mistake it for The Last Picture Show, but something sincere and elegiac lurks in those bang-covered eyes. --Bret Fetzer

My husband and I enjoy the humor and KISS-era nostalgia, but I would never let my kids catch of glimpse of this. Excessive drug use and explicit sexual content.

This movie really takes you back to the late 70's, when Rock-n-Roll clashed with Disco! The movie is about 4 friends who go through great lengths to see their favorite band.........KISS! I loved it (I graduated in 1977) and my 25 year old son loved it! Need I say more?

Description

An indescribable nightmare begins when a group of young friends is stranded on an isolated road deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, with no hope of rescue. Desperate and fearing for their lives, the horror surges as they find themselves relentlessly pursued by a force of evil beyond their imagination! Featuring a hip ensemble of up-and-coming young stars, this blood-curdling epic is a shock-a-minute horror rush that will leave you screaming for more!

Amazon.com

Sultry Eliza Dushku runs for her life in a snug white tanktop, pursued by inbred backwoods cannibals in Wrong Turn. Dushku (Bring It On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a clump of other attractive young people (including Six Feet Under's Jeremy Sisto and Desmond Harrington of We Were Soldiers) get waylaid in the deep West Virginia wilds by a trio of grotesque mountain men, all given realistic ugliness by makeup artist Stan Winston (Interview with the Vampire, Terminator 2). Wrong Turn is the sort of movie where you know who's going to die by the order they appear in the credits, but fans of the inbred backwoods cannibals genre (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes) will find much to savor, particularly the scene in which Dushku and Harrington are trapped under a squalid bed while the inbred backwoods cannibals prepare one of their friends for dinner. Grisly. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars ONE WRONG TURN , ONE NASTY MOVIE!!.......2007-09-05

see, these are the reasons you stay away from the woods, the mountains, the backwood town, places you don't know where the hell they're going. one wrong turn might just be one dead end. a young hot group of people, inbred monsters, missing hikers, and nowhere near civilization can make for a very interesting horror flick. not to mention it hits close to reality. you know there's just some kind of stuff like this in the world somewhere. this group gets stranded, they go out to find some help, instead they find a few cannibals. now they have to run for their lives, all of them not making it of course. good story, nice thrills, good actors. eliza dushku, she's a bad girl in this flick. i give her respect, and desmond harrington, man that boy does his thing here. my hero. he manages to keep the light on him. and jeremy sisto, no i didn't like his ending. his acting was good, as always, but he didn't have to go out like that. other than that, enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars West Virginia, Mountain MomaTake me home, country roads!!.......2007-08-03

Does West Virginia have a Department of Tourism? If they do, are they aware of this film? Is this just an example of some good ol' boys from West Virginny having some fun? No, but this film delivers on what it advertises. It is fun though predictable. Sure you can pick out who is going to get killed and probably in what order. Yes, this plot has been done before. Yup, we've seen the same characters played by different actors in dozens (well quite a few) other films. Still, this film has some thrills, some scares, some serious blood letting and some real creepy folk you don't want to meet up with. And that scene where the SUV gets hauled up to the cabin and the couple are hiding under the bed...Whoa, momma. They were a lot stronger than I would have been in that situation. Not bad acting either. Fans of this type of movie should be satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Deliverance!!!.......2007-07-20

And in a NUTshell that is wut you have folks. Iz so crazy when a plot of this magnitude is dumbed down to the point of idiocy! Crazy h0rny teens get lost in woods then chased by deformed mutants who hail from Mississippi or sumthin. wut can I say for you to realize that you have to have this movie in your collection? I will say Eliza Dushku is great actress and is well done in the film. Some parts not realistic but what do you expect when dealing with people from the backwoods of Appalachian stuff.

5 out of 5 stars So it's really true what they say about Virginia.......2007-07-20

This movie is sooo great. I still will throw it in the dvd player time to time because it is just that awesome. If you are a horror fan and this little gem slipped by you, rent it, no don't rent it, buy it now. I can not wait for Wrong Turn 2 to come out!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Stoned Age.......2007-03-10

Overall a worth while movie to watch
but not as good as Dazed and Confused or Fast Times at Ridgemont High

5 out of 5 stars Groovy.......2007-03-09

Makes you remember old times. For those who lived the 80's stoned this is just what you'll remember. Alcohol, Sex, drugs and metal!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as funny as I remember........2006-10-29

The quality of the video is poor. It looks like they video taped it in a movie theater. The movie has some funny scenes but it's not as good as I remember. I probably liked it so much because my girlfriend at the time hated it.

Love,

Jarrod

5 out of 5 stars Grab a doobie and kick back for some laughs.......2006-08-28

I love this movie. It is definately a cult classic type of film and you will appreciate it a lot more if you were a crazy teen between 1979 to 1984. The plot is simple enough; 2 guys try to get laid and end up in the craziest situations. I wouldn't say this movie is "better" than Dazed & Confused, it is just different and much more realistic in my opinion. I can totaly relate with this film and all of its characters!

5 out of 5 stars "Scnappster?...........that stuff makes me whork!".......2006-06-01

This is probably my all-time favorite party movie. Hubbs and Joe are like a modern day Cheech & Chong. This movie had me laughing so hard, I was crying. I can totally relate to The Stoned Age, because I'm from a small town, and that is all me and my friends did was "drive around trying to get drunk, stoned, and laid". The blonde does get naked in this, but i didnt think that she was as hot as everyone else did. I highly recommend this movie!! It IS better than Dazed and Confused.

So who exactly was Deep Throat, that all-important source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein bust open the Watergate scandal? Well, according to this thoroughly funny, keenly smart comedy from director Andrew Fleming (The Craft), it was two sweetly daft teenage girls named Betsy and Arlene. Taking the history and figures from Watergate and running gleefully and sacrilegiously amok, Dick offers up a hilarious what-if scenario that takes the Nixon administration's downfall from grave tragedy to hilarious farce. When Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene (Michelle Williams) run into a shady figure in the stairwell of Arlene's Watergate apartment building, little do they know they've stumbled upon G. Gordon Liddy (Harry Shearer) on the night of the Democratic National Headquarters break-in. Later, on a White House field trip, they wind up meeting with Nixon himself (Dan Hedaya), who, to ensure their silence, decides to make them official White House dog walkers and "secret youth advisors." Of course, Betsy and Arlene soon find out their idol has feet of clay, and ultimately decide to aid "radical muckraking journalists" (and queasy rivals) Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Bernstein (Bruce McCullough) in their investigation. Fleming and cowriter Sheryl Longin's enfolding of the Watergate scandal is extremely clever and inspired, from Arlene's 18-and-a-half-minute declaration of love on Nixon's tape recorder to the Hello Dolly cookies (laced with a certain herbal stimulant) that help bring about the U.S.-Soviet accord. And after all the angsty-serious portraits of Watergate, it's bliss to see the prime players sent up mercilessly; in addition to Shearer, the cast boasts Dave Foley (Erlichman), Jim Breuer (John Dean), Saul Rubinek (Kissinger), and Ana Gasteyer (Rosemary Woods), all in fine form. Hedaya's Nixon, dead-on but never parodic, is an Oscar-worthy comic turn, and Dunst and Williams invest their characters with affection and humor; the success of the film lies in the way these talented actresses make us laugh with Betsy and Arlene, never at them. Don't be put off by the teen sheen on this comedy--it's also for all of us who still remember Watergate even after 25 years, and still love dancing on the scandal's grave. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Dick.......2007-07-12

A hilarious, strictly satirical take on the Nixon White House, "Dick" follows the inspired notion that two young teens unwittingly pierced the heart of the biggest scandal in presidential history--without realizing it. Dunst and Williams are endearing as the sweetly clueless teeny-boppers, while character actor Hedaya makes even tricky Dick loveable. Director Fleming never veers into pure parody, opting for a smart, irreverent twist on an iconic cultural moment.

5 out of 5 stars Historic Hilarity.......2007-06-29

This movie is genius!! It should be a companion piece to "All The President's Men." The fact the writers used actual historic people, quotes, and events and tied them into this crazy fictional world of a couple of ditzy girls is the most entertaining art imaginable. Kirsten Dunst is wonderful in everything she's done. This is no exception. This movie also proves (along with "Brokeback Mountain") that Michelle Williams can do anything.

5 out of 5 stars batcall.......2007-06-28

A great name for the second worst president in the history of the US. Funny movie though.

3 out of 5 stars FUN WITH DICK, BETSY AND ARLENE.......2007-03-01

Writer-director Andrew Fleming was already responsible for THREESOME in 1994, a movie about sexuality in college, which deserves to be rediscovered. Now with DICK, Fleming chose the delicate genre of the political satire. But, in order not to reject those of us who didn't read the Woodward-Bernstein book or see Alan J. Pakula's ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, that means a lot of people I suppose, Fleming transplants an unconvincing story of two odd teenagers in the Watergate story.

As I said before, the adventures of Betsy and Arlene in the White House hallways are in my opinion not funny at all however the description of the life in the early seventies and the portraits of President Nixon and his staff are particularly successful. And the scenes involving Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein even quite hilarious. So, all in all, the movie manages to grab your interest and deserves at least a rental. As a former reviewer already pointed it out, the bonus scenes of the DVD in the Blopper department are also very interesting.

A DVD zone flower power.

4 out of 5 stars Funny satire of Watergate.......2006-12-16

This is a very enjoyable movie, though young people might be lost at its many references. My favorite scene must be the one where one of the girls reveal to the other the meaning behind the expression Deep Throat, but there are many other great scenes, like when the girls first stumble upon the white house tapes, and reveal to them a Nixon they didn't know. The ending is also superb. What's great about this movie is the overall humor that was sorely missing in "All the President's Men" and "Nixon": in this film, Woodward and Bernstein are as much objects of ridicule as Nixon and Kissinger.

The poster for Teaching Mrs. Tingle may feature young TV cuties Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek), Marisa Coughlin (Wasteland), and Barry Watson (Seventh Heaven), but the real star is the actress playing the title character: Helen Mirren. Mirren plays a bitter, tyrannical teacher who, due to circumstantial evidence, believes goody two-shoes Holmes is guilty of cheating on her history final. Holmes, Coughlin, and Watson go to Mirren's home to convince her that there's been a misunderstanding, but Mirren refuses to listen. Terrified that this will ruin her chances to go to college, Holmes and her compatriots knock Mirren out and tie her to her bed. Unfortunately, they haven't any idea what to do next; when Mirren awakes, the situation becomes a battle of wits in which the teenagers are hopelessly outmatched. Coughlin and Watson are pretty to look at and Holmes has some genuine talent and a lot of charm, but Mirren--who's played Shakespeare on the stage and been in movies ranging from lurid and trashy (Caligula) to eerie and arty (The Comfort of Strangers) to lurid, trashy, eerie, and arty (The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover)--combines the cutting intelligence of Vanessa Redgrave, the steely will of Judi Dench, and a sensual energy that any young starlet would kill for. For fans of the British TV series Prime Suspect, in which Mirren plays the tough yet vulnerable Inspector Tennyson, this teen comedy-thriller is just an amusing footnote in Mirren's career; but if you've never been transfixed by this actress's mischievous sidelong glances, Teaching Mrs. Tingle might provide a good start. --Bret Fetzer

This is a greatly entertaining movie about the teacher you love to hate ~ with the wonderful and extremely talented Brittish actress Helen Mirren. It has a surprise ending too ~ to add to your viewing enjoyment. It is a must see ~ so buy it ~ you will not be disappointed!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Never quite accomplishes anything.......2006-08-05

This teen flick tries to be hip, tries to be suspenseful, and tries to be meaningful but never really attains any of these goals. When three young people kidnap their domineering teacher, the stakes could potentially be huge and traumatic, or just a lot of fun,but the screenwriter pulls back anytime viewers might start to care what happens, or might start to enjoy themselves.

In the Scream films, at any rate, the stakes were huge: Life or Death. In this film, thought they try to make you think the kids academic and career futures are at stake, it never quite rings true. Nor do any of the characters--who are all cliched and unlikeable. The scariest thing in the film (besides the whole premise) is the facile way they handle teen sex as just a consequenceless, "fun" thing. ONe of the characters loses her virginity to a guy her best friend likes and its handled as if she'd eaten the friend's last donut--a little annoying but no big deal. I'm not a prude, but this just seems wrong to me.

Hope they paid Mirren a lot to be in this film because it's a low point in her career as far as I'm concerned. Nothing could be lower in Katie Holmes' career than marrying Tom Cruise, so this may be a high point in her life.

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2006-08-03

Like Justin Timberlake, 'Teaching Mrs. Tingle' is a major guilty pleasure. It's not a great movie, but it's fun, smart and sassy and it has enough going for it to overshadow it's faults. The story follows Leanne (Holmes) as she struggles to make valedictorian so she can get her scholarship and get out of the small town rut she finds herself. The only problem is her history teacher Mrs. Tingle (Mirren) who fancies herself at ruining Leanne's life. When she accuses Leanne of cheating of her history final things spiral out of control and Leanne, along with her boisterous, somewhat ditzy friend Jo Lynn (Coughlin) and the school pretty boy/bad boy Luke (Watson) take matters into their own hands by kidnapping Tingle. There's just one problem. What do they do with her now? The movie is funny and smart and while not perfect it's enjoyable and complete entertainment from start to finish, with true talent like Holmes and Mirren chewing up their lines and Watson and Coughlin looking good while they let the pro's do the work (not to say that Holmes is a 'pro' but I have to admit that she is talented). I personally find this to be a film I can watch again and again and it always retains its fun factor.

3 out of 5 stars "Paging Mrs. Tingle!".......2006-05-22

While attempting to pound out reviews on Straw Dogs and Santa Sangre, a friend of mine lent me Teaching Mrs. Tingle which in comparison felt as light and fluffy as a down comforter. Here I was sweating bullets over two agonizingly lofty and intense pictures that require near perfection before a review could be deemed worthy of appearing in a public arena, and now I had at my fingertips a subject that I could easily discribe in simplistic terms of what works and what does not, needless to say, I decided to give my limited brain cells a rest and leave those two monstrosities in a couple of chaotic piles on the back burner.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a comedy that bases its humor on the familiar comedic elements of paying off long running gags, and exaggerating normality. Kattie Holmes has a long running gag about not getting the meaning of the word "ironic" right untill the closing moments of the film when she pays off the gag by teaching Mrs. Tingle what irony feels like, not that this gag is particularly funny but it does give the story a conveniently contrived conclusion. Marisa Coughlan's long running gag is that Mrs. Tingle can see right through all her acting attempts which is her characters life ambition, this gag also pays off at the conclusion of the film in a similarly contrived manner when she finally fools Mrs. Tingle with her acting ability. The problem is that this film has long since lost any of its funniness due to several plot twists that end up turning this comedy into a psycho thriller.

The best thing about Teaching Mrs. Tingle is Mrs. Tingle. The stylistic choice to exaggerate her character into the evilest teacher in the history of high schools is by far the most engrossing element in the whole film. Helen Mirren plays Mrs. Tingle, a role that recalls her days as Morgana in John Boormans Excalibur. Like Excalibur she is pretty much playing a mythological character, quite possibly Medusa. Her first introduction to the viewer is from the neck down as she briskly walks through the center of campus hallway in her severely buttoned down dark bussiness suit which looks like the attire of a modern day wicked witch. In a scene reminiscent of the running of the bulls in Pamplona Spain, or the parting of the Red Sea, the students and faculty members alike scatter from her path in total fright in a nice build up her insurmountably evil persona. Later in class she destroys her students ridiculously elaborite assignments and shakey psyches with her razor sharp mind and acid tongue as she floats in front of her students like some manevolent crocodile salivating for the next tender morsel to expose its weakness to her.

Playing the role of a sinister beast as opposed to just another straight person already places Helen Mirren at a huge advantage for stealing the attention away from the rest of the cast, but this disparity is all the more magnified by her incredibly powerful film presence which dwarfs the acting ability of her youthful counterparts. It is also interesting to notice the degree in which she separates herself from her hot young co-stars in the area of sex appeal. This is no small feat concidering that she was 53 during the filming of this movie, and is basicly playing a monster. Yet dispite these character and age drawbacks, and dispite not taking part in the films love triangle she still grossly overpowers her nubile co-stars with her sultry sensuality.

The real problem with this movie is that writer director Kevin Williamson made a poor choice to tie the films best feature to a bedpost and leave her there motionless for most of the film. To fill in the missing action, the story had to slither into its side stories which unfortunately revolve around tedious adolescent dramas. I guess he made a choice to do a humorous parody on the Exorcist, yet this very choice placed the film on an endless downward trajectory, it peters out, flatlines, and once it does it never recovers. It creates an maddening film experiance in that it starts off so promising only to lose all its bubbles and go flat. By the end of the film I no longer felt like I was watching something funny, in fact, while watching two of the principle characters violently tumble down a flight of stairs in slow motion, I was suddenly reminded of my review of Straw Dogs which I placed aside because of the scary feelings it gave me. Somehow I do not associate seeing a painful Peckenpah like action sequence with a fun highschool comedy, and I can't help feeling like Kevin Williamson wanted to do far too much with this idea and in the process made it so that none of it worked.

Ultimately this film might make an okay rentail if you are really really bored and have nothing better that you want to do, but ownership is out of the question, dispite how nice it was to see Helen Mirren play such a dynamic character. In keeping with the theme of irony, the true irony is that the choice to make a comedic Exorcist homage at all cost is ultimately what killed all the fun, now thats ironic.

3 out of 5 stars Amusing, but doesn't quite live upto its potential........2006-05-18

Teaching Mrs. Tingle (Kevin Williamson, 1999)

I avoided this film for years despite my fanboyish obsession with Helen Mirren simply because it was written and directed by the awful Kevin Williamson. I finally decided to get around to seeing it, and I discovered, much to my surprise, that Kevin Williamson is not really all that awful. (I am now faced with the idea that Craven and Williamson's collaborations are bad because of Craven and not Williamson, which is a truly depressing idea.) Teaching Mrs. Tingle is at least smart and funny, if predictable and cliched.

Eve Tingle (Mirren) is the history teacher from hell, a tyrant whose class is the one that keeps just about everyone from getting uniformly good grades. Thanks to a series of events that could only happen in Hollywood, good girl Leigh Ann Watson (Dawson's Creek's Katie Holmes) is discovered with the answers to Mrs. Tingle's final exam in her bag. With her best friend Jo Lynn (Pumpkin's Marisa Coughlan) and Luke (Seventh Heaven's Barry Watson), who was responsible for the whole mess in the first place, Leigh Ann goes over to Mrs. Tingle's house to plead her case. Things spiral out of control, and the three teens find themselves locked in a battle of wits with the teacher.

There has been a great deal made over the title's changing from Killing Mrs. Tingle being thanks to Columbine; did no one notice the incredible similarities to the 1997 TV movie Killing Mr. Griffin? Eh, guess not. In any case, you get pretty much what you came for. Jo Lynn is all too stereotypical. Luke is a tad more three-dimensional, but of the three teens, only Leigh Ann is drawn with anything akin to depth. Eve Tingle is the movie's best creation, but much of her depth is shown to the viewer and then made to disappear.

Despite the movie's weak characterization and derivative plot, it is at least amusing and decently-paced, which accounts for some of its watchability. You won't find classic film here, by any means, but not a bad way to kill an hour and a half or so if you enjoy staring rapturously at Helen Mirren. ** ½

Think of Soul Survivors as a more sincere version of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The night before Cassie (the Gwynethesque Melissa Sagemiller) starts college, she gets into a terrifying car accident with her boyfriend (Casey Affleck) and best friends (Wes Bentley from American Beauty and Eliza Dushku from Bring It On and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But was it an accident? And who survived? Cassie starts college--but she also keeps hallucinating about frightening men she saw at a party prior to the accident, as well as about undergoing surgery after it. Is college itself the hallucination? These slips from one reality to the next build an increasing sense of discomfort and anxiety--though some viewers may be made more anxious by a scene in which Sagemiller and Dushku step into a shower together. Or do they... --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Very weird movie.......2007-06-05

I watched it from start to finish and don't understand the movie. It is a very confusing movie.

1 out of 5 stars There's mind-screw, and then there's confusing rubbish.......2007-03-27

The lowdown: A girl named Cassie and her three friends are involved in a car accident in which her boyfriend dies. Two ugly ravers are out to get her. Her boyfriend, not one to be hindered by death, pops up every now and again. And, yeah...that's about it. Think Lost Highway meets Love Story, but with no point.

I like a good mind-screw movie as much as the next Joe, but good grief, Jon Voight, what the h*ll happened to this flick? This had "suck" written all over it from the get-go. It's not often you can tell a movie will bite the big one as early as the opening credits, but Soul Survivors breaks the mold. And to think I watched the extended version, which, you'll be stunned to find out, was one whole minute longer than the theatrical release. One minute. One lousy minute. Can't wait for Soul Survivors: Director's Cut, wherein we're treated to an additional 10 seconds of aimless story.

1) Acting. So-so. Melissa Sagemiller did aight as the titular, tormented lead. Wes Bentley and Casey Affleck were okay. Luke Wilson played a priest who spouted religious clichés. No, it was not as funny as it sounds. In fact, it was painful. Eliza Dushku lets her cleavage do the acting. I would blame the actors, but the screenplay gave 'em jack-all to work with.

2) Structure. Being a mind-screw movie, the scenes ricocheted everywhere. You get flashbacks, subliminal scenes that appear for a split-second, dreams, hallucinations, and a cornucopia of general weirdness. Chris likes mind-screw movies, but the structure has to be tight for the flick to work. Survivors lacked the cohesion necessary to mess with my mind and make the movie enjoyable as a whole. Too willy-nilly.

3) Plot. Cassie (Sagemiller) has a hallucination, then runs away. She then talks to Matt (Bentley) or Annabel (Dushku) who comfort her. Cassie then has another hallucination and runs away. Matt and/or Annabel proceed to comfort her. Press repeat. Yeah, that's my last two hours right there.

4) Repetition. Hehe, please, are you joking? I wouldn't torture a terrorist with this movie.

A true stink-bomb. Watch only for its unintentionally comedic value. The scene near the end where the cops walk toward Cassie reminded me of every zombie movie I ever watched. I laughed out loud right before predicting that Cassie would be hit with a car as she started backing up. Then she gets hit by a car. It's just that bad, folks. The only survivors in this affair are the ones who can sit through this pile of celluloidal excrement and live to tell about it.

Favorite line:
(Cassie to "Raven", who--you guessed it!--is a hardcore raver)
Cassie: Go back to the Addams' family!

2 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD AT ALL........2006-07-25

The plot of the film was vey promising but it took to long to get to the point and it became boring. Hoping that it would get better I finished seeing the film it went from promising to boring to straight out pathetic. I found that her boyfriend was not dead instead it was her two friend (Dushku and whats his face) and that she was in limbo the whole time while trying to be rivied in the operating table. When you read this it may sound good be when you see the film it's just anti-climatic. The performance where some what stale even though they are all good actors they fall short in this film. I would not recomend this movie to anyone and i'm sad to see many suffered seein this movie just like I have.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best but not that bad........2006-07-06

Alot of people are rating the movie poorly because they didnt understand it. The storyline isnt really that bad. Granted if you dont like movies that make you think then you wont like this. I am very picky about the movies I watch and what I consider to be worth watching. This movie grabbed my attention a few years ago and I rented it and thought it was good. Granted I wouldnt buy it for more than 10 bucks. Its not that bad of a movie. Try renting it before you buy it though. If you like movies with a twist that will cause you to think and keep you wondering then this is a good movie. If you prefer movies where you know everything in the first 10 mins then this isnt one for you.

2 out of 5 stars Killer Cut??????.......2006-03-02

I'm glad I didn't watch the theatrical release of this movie because this "killer cut" is said to contain more blood and more terror. Geez. That must have been boring!!!!!! ( theatrical cut ). This is your basic supernatural movie about a woman who gets into a terrible car accident. She starts having hallucinations and begins to wonder who her real friends are. There is poor acting and basically the movie is boring and doesn't make much sense. Don't let the box fool you for you will be somewhat disappointed.
