I loved this collection- was amongst my favourite episodes. I got the Batman and Justice League collections as well- the 3 combined is really the definitive DC universe in my mind- amazing!

IF YOU LOVE SUPERMAN THEN YOU WILL LOVE THIS WHOLE SERIES. I HAD TO HAVE THIS WHOLE COLLECTION BECAUSE I GOT THE WHOLE COLLECTION OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE & JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED & I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT IN THOSE EPISODES SO NOW A LOT IS EXPLAINED BY WATCHING THE SUPERMAN SERIES. Superman TAS..........2007-05-25

To be honest, This show was not all that great. One reviewer said it's not fair to compare Supe's TAS to Batman TAS. But c'mon. Bruce Timm and his buddies really set the bar extremely high with Batman, but Superman though lighter and "nicer," well, just does not have as quality stories as Batman. I admit I'm a Batman fan OK. And of course he's way cooler. But if your'e going to take a guy from another planet who dresses up in red, yellow and blue tights, flies around and punches stuff, you need good story for people to take it seriously. Maybe it's just the boyscout in Superman that makes him so cheesy. So why the four stars. Well, I think some of the greatest episodes in this are...World's Finest 1,2 and 3. Yes, the ones with Batman. I'm sorry, Batman just makes even Superman look Cooler. But if youre a Supes fan you should definately get this. It's way better than any cartoon they have out there now ("The Batman"). It still deserves four stars because there are some great episodes like The Last Son of Krypton,The Way of All Flesh,Blast from the Past, The Late Mr. Kent, Apokolips Now, and of course the Finale, Legacy.I must say, Darkseid is great in this. There are a couple of lame episodes but if you like Supe's, definately get this.

A good series that never quite flew.......2006-09-22

Superman's most recent animated series could have been a great show, but it never quite made it. Part of the problem was an unfair comparison to the Batman series, which had just finished production (though it would be renewed briefly for the Superman/Batman hour). While Batman immediately had a sense of theme and mood--dark, gothic, and occasionally morbid--Superman suffered from being pushed into the daylight. It's easier to believe that criminals in a city of perpetual night would look and act like maniacs, but in sunny Metropolis it's often difficult to get beyond the silliness of the supervillains. The show's creators made a good decision by incorporating elements of Kirby's Fourth World (e.g., Darkseid's invasion of Earth) into the show, thereby placing Superman in a universe of super-powered beings even more larger-than-life than himself.

Unfortunately, the show did not last long enough to do a great job with the Fourth World, and it wasted too much time on trivial villains like Toyman, Parasite, Livewire and Bizarro. Meanwhile, promising villains like Brainiac (inventively rethought for the show), Metallo and two Kryptonian criminals showed up only rarely and might as well have been tossed altogether. After a fun beginning, where old and new characters were creatively introduced, the show tapered off into mediocrity, and ended with a handful of overly-preachy episodes that couldn't be saved, even by an excellent finale (once again utilizing the Fourth World).

Still, the show has some glorious highlights. The episode "Mxzpixilated" is one of the funniest things ever to hit television, and is one of the few Mxyzptlk stories I enjoy. Brainiac recreated as Krypton's artificial intelligence was a stroke of genius, and provided a new context for his previous "shrunken cities" shtick. Lana Lang as a fashion designer was a great idea that wasn't used often enough, but when it was it worked (especially in "The Late Mr. Kent"). The concept of Supergirl as a native of Krypton's sister planet was also well done, and she was a great, cheery character.

It's unfortunate that the show's creators never quite found the same groove that they found for Batman, but this series was still a valiant attempt at recreating the Superman mythos. Maybe the "Superman Curse" spreads into all attempts to tell Superman stories; very few of the shows and movies manage to do it well. Still, this is one of the best.

Own for nostalgia.......2007-09-03

Having the VHS release of several episodes, I was suprised at the poor quality of this product. My DVD back-up of my VHS tape looks better than most of these. But I understand these are not guaranteed sellers (will they EVER release the rest of the Superboy live-action series?) so it's best not to put a lot of money into the production, even up to the case art and DVD menus looking NOTHING like the cartoon. But if having a bad copy is better than none, I appreciate this being released, and through Amazon relatively cheaply. The retrospective featurette was great, a funny tale of how Filmation bluffed their way through getting DC to sign on with them for the series. So low marks for the technical quality, but good marks for getting it out on DVD.

Superman in the 60's.......2007-08-16

Superman in 1966. WOW. Cheesy, fun anamatics will give our children a taste of old school, and a look back into the history of superman. If you are a superman junky, then this 2 disc set is a must, because if you are younger than 30 years old, such as myself, you will say "wow, I didn't even know this exsisted!" Good animation and alot of fun. You will enjoy it.

COMPLETE SUPERMAN BUT NOT COMPLETE SHOW.......2007-08-14

This set contains all the Superman episodes that were produced in 1966, but they are missing the cartoons that were sandwiched in between which were usually Superboy cartoons.

This was a very cheesey series. Jimmey Olson is annoying, the Superman featured in these films comes across as a well meaning clumsly Gorilla.

Good but incomplete.......2007-08-01

This CD was a great trip down Memory lane. Very much enjoyed seeing those once familiar episodes. Granted, not up to the standards of say 'Superman the animated Series' or 'Justice League Unlimited' but darn good for its time.

Unfortunately missing is the episodes of Superboy that were sandwiched betweem the Superman episodes, Though they did manage to sneak one "up next" plug for the missing Superboy episodes in. Also missing were the episodes of the Justice League, Hawkman, The Atom, and the Teen Titans that were made when the series was combined with the Aquaman show. Ah well Hopefully an the Next DVD

Even with the missing parts it's a good DVD. (And ya gotta love the catchy theme Music). Less heavy on the More serious themes of current Super hero fair and aimed more at the kid crowd. Or just Big kid at heart).

Superman: The Animated Series, Volume Three, would sadly be the final run of this great animated series before getting cancelled. In this season the show was beginning to take on a daring new direction, which some might say was more grim (like the episode "Unity") and a bit darker than past Superman incarnations. The stories were also becoming more challenging and interesting, ending with Superman and Lois Lane locking lips. But the change to the formula was definitely an asset to the series giving Superman yet another modern facelift. The most notable change was the addition of the super villains from Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Since Superman was such a "superhero" it was really tough to find villains to fight him on an equal playing field. Kirby's Darkseid and Planet of the Apokolips characters provided some cool villains that could compete with Superman punch for punch, adding a mysterious, dark element to the Superman mythos. These characters make up some of the best episodes of the season including the great two part episodes "Apokolips…Now!," "Little Girl Lost" and " the series finale "Legacy." An extremely well written cartoon series.......2007-05-19

Sadly this is the last season of this great cartoon series. This is by far the darkest of all of the Superman seasons. The finale ("Legacy") is done brilliantly, ending the season on a rather bleak note. Additionally the last episode leads straight into the first episode of Justice League season 2. The JL episode does a fantastic job of continuing the dark tone set in the "Legacy". Highly recommended.

Great chapters of this series. There is nothing like seeing your favourite superheroe in a nice series, and nicely made. Great item for your collection.

"Lois, help! It's worse than kryptonite. My legs can't support this obscenely large hulking torso, when they draw me like this. It was so much easier in the Filmation days, when I had an even build."

The only other disappointment in this series is that kryptonite needn't exist. Just about everything else affects Superman to some extent as well. In a commentary in Vol 1 or 2, the producer said, "you got no show, if you don't do that." (Superfriends writers Hanna-Barbera got half hour stories out of a fully invulnerable Supes).
BUT APART FROM THAT, IT'S AN ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT SHOW.
This set may confuse collectors who didn't buy vol 2. The DVD set releases are not grouped as seasons 1-3.
Vol 1 gives you the shorter season 1 and the first few episodes of Season 2.
Vol 2 gives you most of season 2.
Vol 3 (this one) gives you the last few eps of season 2 and the whole of season 3.
I particularly enjoyed the premier appearances of other DC characters not on tv before. Rather than take a chance on giving them their own shows, Warner came up with a brainstorm. Almost every second episode of Superman in this DVD set teams Superman up (in the comic book style of DC Comics Presents...) with another Super Hero, including 2 more Batman appearances (one with Tim Drake Robin), the New Gods, Aquaman (drawn much better than his half naked long haired nose ringed appearance in Justice League), Legion of Super Heroes, and the first tv appearance of the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern (all but ignoring Hal Jordan, but it's good to see Kyle).
The Legion story is set in Clark Kent's college years, before he became Superman, and adapts the premise for Legion of Super Heroes: They go into the past from the 30th Century to young Clark's time, and team with him. A great prototype for the Legion series that aired last year.
Also, if you're wondering what happened to Batman's enemies Ras Al Gul and Bane in his own series, you'll get your answers here in two team-ups with Superman. "Knight Time" adapts the long running Knightfall Batman plotline of the early 1990s, using Superman as Batman's stand-in, rather than Jean-Paul. "Demon Reborn" pits Ras against Superman and Batman, whose Worlds Finest relationship is developing at just the right pace to continue in Justice League season one.

this is really good stuff, a lot of team ups for Superman with several of the most powerfull superheros of DC comics ever.
It only lake of some more featurings, but i can live with that,so far best content of the series.

Great Show, Poor Package.......2007-08-15

The show itself gets 5 stars; however, beware of the dvd packaging. One of the disks is one of those double sided disks that companies include to save money on a third disk. They are very annoying because both sides contain a data and can easily get scratched.

A good cartoon........2007-07-17

Superman the Animated series is Similar to the Batman one. All the episodes are enjoyable and the DVD contains commentary on key episodes. This version of Superman is a little different than in the movies. He is a lot weaker in this version and not as strong. I don't like that here in the series Braniac is a Supercomputer from Krypton. I also don't like some parts of the series because Superman fights robots and droids too much. Overall,this is a fun cartoon to watch and a good buy.

Nice to have, but..........2007-05-13

The DVD is very nice and must have but what you should now is that if you Superman season one dont buy Superman son of Krepton (included in season one). It is a waste of money! Also if you have Superman season 2 dont buy Superman Batman the movie (included in season 2)!Take care and dont waste your money like I did!At least amazone should mention this if WB dont care!

Superman lives on in one of the greatest cartoon versions of the Man of Steel ever made!!!.......2007-04-08

I still remember when this animated series was made and I fell in love with it since the first episode. This animated series comes on two disks with 18 episodes that has the Man of Steel battling aliens, giant robots, super computers, and his biggest rival of all, Lex Luthor! The action is great, especially in some of the episodes, and the voice casting for the characters was done really well. Add some extras to this disk set and you have a series that anyone of any age will enjoy!

Disk 1:

The Last Son of Krypton, Part 1: On an alien world called Krpton, a scientist named Jor-El realizes that the world is about to end and desperately tries to get the supreme council to evacuate the entire world. However the Supreme Council instead listens to Brainiac, a diabolical computer designed to collect the information about all the planets in the solar system, and also has intentions of letting Krpton be destroyed. Jor-El's pleas go to deaf ears and as the world ends the only survivor is Jor-El's son, who escapes on a spaceship sent to earth.

The Last Son of Krypton, Part 2: On earth, Kal-El [Jor-El's son] learns his alien heriatage from his adopted parents. Now knowing why he has all these special abilities Clark Kent is born and moves into the huge city of Metropolis to make a living as a newspaper reporter as well as saving people in times of need as Superman!

The Last Son of Krypton, Part 3: Lex Luthor, a powerful billonaire, sees Superman as a threat to running the city and hires a man named John Corban to attack superman in a huge robotic machine. [This wont be the last time you will see Corban in the series]

Fun and Games: Toyman, a deranged inventor inside a dummy suit, wants revenge for the murder of his father and its up to Superman to stop him. Really creepy ending to this episode.

A Little Peice of Home: During a robbery attempt at a museum, Superman comes across a strange rock called kryptonite which mysteriously weakens him. That is all the evidence needed for Lex Luthor to take hold of the rock and use it to try and kill Superman.

Feeding Time: A man named Rudy, who is in a low dead end job, is exposed to chemicals which turn him into a being that can absorb memories, strength, and knowledge of anyone that he touches, including Superman!

Disk 2 Side A

The Way of All Flesh: John Corban returns as he is about to be let free from jail, only to realize that he has been exposed to a virus that must lead to an operation to save his life. Lex Luthor then transforms him into Metallo, a cyborg like being with krptonite serving as his heart and power. A war then erupts with Corban and Superman.

Stolen Memories: Brainiac returns, this time showing up at Earth, and asks Superman to join him in exchange for memories and secrets of Krypton. However doubts follow superman and it isnt long before he discovers Brainiac's secrets.

The Main Man, Part 1: A bounty hunter named Lobo is hired by a collector of rare species to bring superman into his collection. This leads to a wild fight on earth and in space as both Superman and Lobo himself is double crossed and placed in the collector's habitat.

The Main Man, Part 2: Lobo and Superman now must team up to escape the collector and get back to safety. This leads to a huge showdown in the collector's giant spaceship involving other bounty hunters and dangerous rare species of aliens [my two favorite episodes!]

My Girl: A woman named Lana Lang, an old flame of Clark Kent's, shows up in Metropolis as Lex Luthor's new girlfriend. However Luthor realizes that lang is also mysteriously linked to Superman and decides to kill her in order to draw Superman into a trap.

Tools of the Trade: A criminal and his gang called Intergang are given weapons by a mysterious supplier who in turn works for one of Superman's most hated rivals, Darkside.

Two's a Crowd: A bomb maker is in a coma and has a bomb hidden in Metropolis somewhere. Superman has to resort to getting help from an enemy of his past in order to find the bomb before it is too late!

The Prometheon: A huge creature crashes on Earth and causes havoc by absorbing raw heat and attacking anything in its past. Superman must find a way to stop it before all of Metropolis is completely destroyed!

Disk 2 Side B:

Blasts from the Past [2 epsiodes] Superman discovers the Phantom Zone, where two krptonian criminals are being kept. Superman lets them out but soon realizes his big mistake after the two beings realize they can rule Earth after becoming as powerful as Superman.

Livewire: A woman with a loud mouth gets turned into a being of pure electricity in a huge accident. Blaming Superman for her transformation, Livewire as she now wants to be called is determined to destroy superman at all cost.

Speed Demon: The Flash, the first of the Justice League superheroes that shows up, challenges Superman to a race around the world. While they are racing the two superheroes realize a plot by someone called the Weather Wizard who wants to take over the world!

This is definately recommended, a good voice cast, great action, and a lot of drama makes this a great series to get in to! highly recommended!

A masterpiece of a cartoon series.......2007-03-09

What more can you say about a cartoon that was so well written, it won an emmy!?! AN EMMY for crying out loud! This award is given only to sitcoms such as Seinfeld(well deserved), Everybody Loves Raymond(also well deserved) and yeah..Friends(not so deserved). Bare in mind that this Superman, the animated series, came out at a time when everyone thought Superman was basically dead. Mainly because they had him brutally killed, beaten to death in the comics, by a character named Doomsday! Man was there publicity written all over the newspapers about it. From the Daily News, The New York Post, maybe even The NY Times. All were discussing how Superman, a hero that was basically indestructable, was beaten to death, in an epic battle that will go down in comic book history! I have to admit though, as hard as it was to see Superman dead, the story was well written and it was spread out to 2 different comics, Action comics and Superman, the Man of steel. I wonder if the story had anything to do with the fact that it was written by a woman who was writing for the Superman comic series at the time. Not sure if she's there anymore...I wonder why...Anyways, getting back to Superman, TAS, this series is a MUST BUY for anyone and I mean anyone, who enjoys a really well written and directed cartoon. (Can we really say "well directed" when we're talking about a tv cartoon?) It doesn't matter. This one is so well written that even my wife, who doesn't really care for such cartoons, was practically glued to the TV with me and my son, who's now 6. Yeah, it's a little too violent for any kid under the age of 5 so I wouldn't try to expose him/her to some of the violence in this cartoon. Unless of course, you want to see him flying from one couch to the other, and coming close to breaking your favorite Lava Lamp. I bought all 3 volumes which covers the entire run of Superman, TAS and I wasn't disapointed AT ALL!! This cartoon is like watching a mini movie and judging by some of the movies out there now, this cartoon by far, is SOOOOOO much more interesting and much better to watch. I guess they had to bring people back to believing in Superman after he was given such a horrible death in the comics. DC probably couldn't afford to loose one of it's biggest money makers not only in comics but in movies as well. Superman was so loved by millions of people, myself included, that they had to bring him back somehow, in the way people remembered him. And what a way to bring him back to life. It's shame that the cartoon only lasted for 3 or 4 years, from 1996 to I think 1999. But keep in mind that it also came on the heals of another great cartoon series, the Batman, TAS which by the way, was also written by the same writers as Superman, TAS. These cartoons are so good that once you put the first DVD, of Superman TAS, Volume one, you won't be able to stop watching the other DVD, as 2 DVDs come in each volume, which is 18 episodes in total! To be honest, I almost spent an entire day watching Volume 1 before I even realized,"man it's almost 6:00 PM"! But I watched it anyway..(c'mon, there was only 3 episodes left!) I haven't watched all 3 volumes yet, but believe me when I tell you that this cartoon is very addictive! It made me feel like a kid again and I'm 44 years old!! It's been a looong time since I watched a cartoon that was this good, and honestly, it's better than any cartoon that I've ever seen in the past. Simply put, THIS CARTOON SET IS ONE OF THE BEST BUYS I HAVE EVER MADE. I intend on buying the Batman, TAS also as well as the Justice League. These are cartoons that were made way ahead of their time. They are for the true superhero fans. They show how powerful your favorite Superheroes really are, and the battle scenes are excellent, just like the comics...maybe even better. Just thought you'd like to know, this movie was actually shown in 2 episodes of the Superman, the animated series. So if you're looking to buy the entire Superman,TAS, which I HIGHLY recommend,then DON'T BUY this movie as you'll be buying it twice! Getting back to this review. What else can be said but that it was a great great movie! Pairing superman & batman and both finding out each other secret identity. Plus the battle both Superman & Batman had with Luthor & the Joker was classic! I won't tell you what Batmen went up against in this movie, but it was verry similar to a battle that another well known superhero, Spiderman, had. Either way, it was a great battle and one of the best parts of this movie. The Lois Lane storyline was good also. It wasn't too violent so I watched this with my then 5 year old son and he LOVED IT! After it was done, he wanted to see it again. All I can say is that this cartoon brought back alot of memories of long ago when superhero cartoons were fun to watch. It wasn't watered down or politically corrected like the SuperFriends were, because you were able to see the heros using ALL of their powers. If you're a fan of good superhero cartoons, then this cartoon, (which again, you can see in it's entirety in the Superman, TAS)is well worth buying!

Bought this for my son who is 4 and he loved the interaction between Batman and Superman. As a mom, i found it interesting and not boring at all. Joker is really funny. I recommend it.

The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamil) has hatched an evil scheme as he finds a special object that contains kryptonite as he heads to Metropolis to make a deal with Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) to help take down Superman (voiced by Tim Daley). Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy) heads down to Metropolis to track him down as he meets Clark Kent and falls for the lovely Lois Lane as only he as Batman along with Superman can foil Luthor's and Joker's diabolical plan.

Wonderfully animated and fantastic full length feature animated movie that finally has the two greatest superheroes from DC meeting each other for the first time in animation. Bruce Timm (producer and co-director of the Batman and Superman 90's cartoons) has done it again with another winner in the Batman animated movie chronicles combining it with his "Superman The Animated Series", fans of both heroes shouldn't miss this movie.

The DVD doesn't offer much extras except for a game, interview, music montage, trailers and cast and crew info but if your into Batman and Superman get this movie.

Anyone up for a LIVE-ACTION "Batman/Superman Movie"?.......2006-11-30

I am. Anyway, to start out it's good fun to see Superman (Tim Daly) and Batman (Kevin Conroy) team up in one movie. There's nothing extra on the VHS version as far as trailers are concerned. But you can still enjoy the movie. "The New Batman Adventures" is much more violent than "Batman: the Animated Series", as for "Superman: The Animated Series" is less offensive than "TNBA" (if at all).

Trivia: Did you know that this movie was originaly three episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" titled "World's Finest"?

The Batman/Superman movie is really good! Batman/ Bruce Wane comes to Metropolis to make a business deal with Lex Luthor. Bruce Wayne is also in Metropolis becuase he wants to date Lois Lane. This story creates tension between Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane. Meanwhile the Joker and Harley Quinn are free and they make deal with Lex Luthor to get rid of Superman! This is great animated movie! Bruce Timm did a good job with the story and characters! Highly Recommended! A+

Superman, Volume 2.......2007-03-09

Well for anyone who enjoyed this series back in the 90's this is a must have. And if you really like Superman this is a must, must have! I grew up watching this show and since I am a huge fan of Superman once I had a good job and therefore money, I decided to get this series on DVD and I sure wasn't dissapointed. This Volume introduces some great villains and is full of awesome episodes with some interesting bonus material as well.

A fun and worthwhile revisioning of Superman - although the main character is often Lois Lane.......2007-01-29

There are a number of criticisms of the Man of Steel, most notably that he's so powerful there can be little suspense in his battles. Therefore, there are really only 2 types of battles in the Superman universe - those with villians as powerful as he, and those involving kryptonite (his Achillies Heel). The producers of the Superman: the Animated Series know this, and wisely introduce a number of innovations in order to keep the stories fresh.

The most important, from a storytelling perspective, is that the stories often centre on Lois Lane instead of Superman. This also allows the writers to give the Clark Kent personna lots of screen time, as a sidekick to Lois. The two best episodes of this season are examples of this: In "Brave New Metropolis," Lois is teleported to an alternate universe where Superman is a vaguely fascist policeman (the S on his suit is a stylised Nazi-SS lightning bolt) in Lex Luthor's dictatorship of Metropolis. The best episode of the series is called "The Late Mr. Kent," wherein Clark is hot on the tail of a sensitive story that results in a car bomb being detonated under him. Of course, Clark as Superman is unhurt, but Clark the human could never have survive the blast. This leads to the very entertaining and interesting storyline of Superman trying to figure out how to bring Clark back to life. (In the best scene in the season, the police are baffled that Clark's mom doesn't seem concerned that her son has just been killed. "Ma'am, are you sure you understand the implications of what I've just told you?")

Of course, there are also some knock-down, drag-out fights with some of Superman's arch enemies. Here, though, the series is not at its finest, although it's through no fault of its own. Superman simply doesn't have the cast of villians of, say, Batman. Even the most casual fan would be able to name several Batman villians (e.g., Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze). After Lex Luthor and Mr. Mxyzptlk (the latter of whom is a one-trick pony), there are no real first-line villians in Superman's pantheon. This show did introduce a new villain named Livewire (with a high-octane voice by Lori Petty), and this season does feature Darkseid in one episode and Brainiac in another. But, as expected, the vast number of shows are variations of some Lex scheme to destroy Superman, or take over the world, or whatever.

The highlight for many (and the reason I bought this disc) will be the 3-episode crossover with the Batman universe titled, appropriately, "World's Finest." Joker finds a large piece of kryptonite and offers to kill Superman for Lex Luthor. The friction common between Batman and Superman is evident, this time brought on by the neat twist of ahving Bruce Wayne date Lois Lane. Overall, it might be the most enjoyable multi-part story in all of the Superman/Batman animated series.

Superman Flies Higher In Volume Two.......2006-07-23

Further proof of my shame of not viewing this series when it was originally on air, Volume 2 features some of my favorite episodes. It features the three parter which really turned me on to the series and that was "World's Finest" which was (if memory serves me correct) was Batman's first appearance since his original series run ended around 1995. Around this time, they were making the re-vamp eppys of Bats but they didn't premiere until 1997 I believe.

Anyway, here is what's cookin' on Volume 2:

Disc 1

Identity Crisis - Bizzaro, the reverse Superman, is re-introduced here as a failed clone experiment gone ary by none other than Lex Luthor.

Target - Lois Lane, who has made her share of enemies both by her own strong personality and her association with Superman, is now the target of someone who has felt wronged by the spunky reporter.

Action Figures - Metallo shows up on an island with no memory of his past.

Mxzpixilated - A little alien with the hard to spell name shows up in Metropolis to make life miserable for both Superman and his alter ego, Clark Kent!

Double Dose - Freed from prison, Livewire wants revenge on Superman and enlists The Parasite to do it but will her lust for vengence blind her to a bigger danger?

Solar Power - A former boyfriend of Lois Lane gains the power to manipulate light and uses it to weaken and take down Superman!

When Mxyzpixilation meets Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!.......2006-06-17

Completely, absolutely, magnificently wonderful! If you liked "Superman, the Animated Series: Volume 1," then you'll adore and love "Superman, the Animated Series: Volume 2" because the best episodes of the 1997 animated series are here! Viewers first get introduced to one of Superman's most trickiest enemies - Mr. Mxyzptlk!!!!! A powerful being from the 5th dimmension, Mr. Mxyzptlk, is very hard for Superman to beat in the episode. Other great super-villains make their first appearance here too. Such characters include: Luminus, Karkull, Bizarro, and Darkseid (Darkseid made a small cameo in Volume 1, but this is his true first episode). In three of these great episodes, Barman and Superman must team-up in order to defeat Lex Luther and The Joker who are working together to destroy The Man of Steel! Also.....Superman meets his clone, Metallo returns with amnesia, someone is trying to secretly kill Lois Lane (but who?), Braniac downloads himself into Lex Luthor's computer, Parasite and Livewire team-up, Clark Kent is thought to be dead, Lois Lane gets stuck in an alternate version of Metropolis, and Superman must battle a really big monkey!

THE STORY LINE IS KINDA OFF FROM THE THINGS WE KNOW ALREADY FROM THE SUPERMAN ANIMATED SERIES LIKE BRAINIAC ACTING LIKE HE DON'T KNOW A DAG ON THING ABOUT KRYPTON WHEN HE IS SUPPOSED 2 BE FROM KRYPTON!! This was painful for a Superman: The Animated Series fan (me) to watch. Despite the similarity of the look of the movie to the series, most of the voices are different, the plot is totally diconnected with the show, and the characters are totally changed and flat. For example:

- Lex Luthor is a buffoon.
- Mercy is a brainless twit.
- Braniac is a laughing witless maniac.

I really wish I'd looked at the reviews here before watching this (let along buying it). Please, save your money and your respect for this great show, and pretend this garbage doesn't exist.

All brawn, no brain.......2007-08-11

As a lover of the Superman animated series of the late 90s and the Justice League and JLU series, I am terribly disappointed and outraged by this effort. At one point in the movie, Brainiac boasts that he has brawn as well as brains, but this movie is mostly a string of boring action scenes separated by and interwoven with insipid and ridiculous dialog. Powers Booth's depiction of Lex Luthor made ME sad, to paraphrase the character. There are moments that are reminiscent of the series, especially with Lois and Clark, but as a whole the movie feels like a rejected episode from the series that was padded into feature length. It is literally laughably bad; I guffawed when Superman kissed Lois and resuscitated her a la Sleeping Beauty.
Save your money and time - don't buy or rent this movie or bother watching it even if it's free.

Better than the consensus: an unbiased review........2007-07-13

I don't even care to write reviews normally, but "Brainiac Attacks" was so badly panned, I felt compelled to even the balance a little.

This is like an Elseworlds story - if one is used to just one version of Superman and his supporting cast, then I understand their disappointment with this movie. I was disappointed to find out that Tim Daly wasn't doing the voice overs in Justice League. However, I've moved on, and with a little openness, you can, too.

I liked this movie because it did something that the series only briefly touched on, then did without: should Superman reveal his identity to the one he loves...? The story has a good center, re-telling the pitfalls of superficiality, which is quite fitting considering the reviews this work has gotten.

I don't want to give away too much, but Superman was forced to make a couple of difficult decisions regarding his legacy and the woman he loves, making for compelling drama. Actually, the recent Superman live action movie went into the legacy bit, but didn't deal with it as this feature does.

Yes, Luthor is completely different - he and Mercy try a bit of comedy in this one, which isn't horrible, but Luthor's a pretty bad guy, which makes him seem openly psychotic (more like Joker) when he's trying to be funny. This is the only thing I really didn't like about any of the new characterizations, which is still a personal preference.

The action is good as well - I don't think I've seen Superman get walloped so good, even by Sinestro - Supes has a lot of getting up to do in these battles, which reminds me of why he's a hero to many.

Having said all of these complementary things, I have to say that I bought this movie for three dollars at Hollywood video, so if you're reading this review at about the time it was written, you should look into this. It was previously viewed and marked down from a still low $5.99. I wouldn't pay full price for most things though, but I would've paid more to get this movie if I didn't find it at Hollywood.

P.S. - I gave it five stars, 'cause to me it's take it, or leave it - and I think you should take it.

Among the greatest animated achievements of the forties.......2007-08-09

When watching these cartoons, if you focus on the depiction of Superman they can seem somewhat dated, but if you focus on execution and technique they remain amazing cinematic achievements. Most of the cartoons of decade, whether shorts or full lengths, were borrowing from cutting edge techniques in cinematography. Many were developing their own aesthetic, such as the masterful Warner Brothers cartoons or the great early feature length films by Disney, but the Fleischers decided to give these early adventures of Superman a distinct noir feel. By no stretch can these be considered film noir, a term that is slung about as if every other film from the decade qualified. But the use of shadow in these cartoons is striking and clearly derivative from the developers of film noir cinemagraphic technique like Nicholas Musuraca and others inspired by German Expressionism. Shot after shot in these cartoons are dominated by shadows and they constantly frame the scenes in interesting ways. It will remind many animation fans of techniques used by many of the more sophisticated anime animators.

But this clearly isn't our Superman. In many ways he still is, but in a host of ways this is a Superman who still hasn't quite developed into who we think of as the Man of Steel. For instance, his uniform is slightly different, the "S" placed against a black diamond shape on his chest. And for the most part this Superman seems unable to fly. Occasionally he does seem to be able to fly, but more often he seems to be able only to jump, as in his original incarnation. The rare use of X-ray vision is, to say the least, odd, with his eyes rolling back and glazing over is the most bizarre fashion. Nor is he as invulnerable or strong as our current superhero. But in many ways I actually prefer this. He seems more approachable, more comprehensible.

Apart from Lois Lane and Superman/Clark Kent, one will find no familiar characters here. No Jimmy Olsen, no Perry White, no Lex Luthor or any other villains. No kryptonite! The depiction of Lois Lane is, however, fascinating. Though Superman repeatedly has to save her she is no shrinking violet. She is brave and bold and heroic. On more than one occasion she is endangered doing what she believes must be done, such as when Japanese spies stealing a top secret airplane and she gets captured by using the radio to warn the military what has happened. Yeah, she gets captured, but without her the thieves would have stolen the plane. When she is on a runaway train that villains are attempting to steal she is shot at by bad guys driving alongside the train in a car. She picks up a machine gun and shoots back. In many of her incarnations Lois is depicted as more rash than brave, but that is not the case here.

These simply must be seen by anyone who is interested in Superman, the Fleischers in particular or the history of animation in general, or the history of heroic women in popular culture. Or even if you just love a good story.

I love these old Max Fleisher cartoons. My son does too, and he's only 2 years old. He won't let us watch anything else. It's always got to be superman. If you love superman like us, these cartoons are a must have for your dvd collection. The quality is great too.

Superman's Animated Screen Debut.......2007-07-08

Ahead of their time in terms of animation, Superman is still entertaining on this level to the degree that the newer animated series by Warner (as well as its Batman counterpart) are mimicing much of this original style. The comments that can be viewed prior to the cartoons themselves help one appreciate the incredible work (and money - $30,000.00 for one cartoon in an era when one could purchase a very nice home for around $10,000) that went into the making of this series. Definitely reflective of the era they were made and, by the time these were released, show how much Superman had entered the American psyche. Lots of fun.

The Complete Superman Cartoons - Diamond Anniversary Edition.......2007-05-22

The Fleischer Brothers' Studio were doing animation work, light years ahead of their time. Cartoon animation seems to be the correct arena to display a comic book story. The still pages of the comic strip come to life with amazing(and sometimes surrealistic) colors;check out "The Magnetic Telescope". Sammy Timberg's musical arrangements hold you riveted into the ever-progressing action of the plot. And then, there is always at the end of the story a comforting quip from Clark Kent to the viewers. This is Superman as he was meant to be. This is Superman from the 1940s. This is Superman who could leap tall buildings in a single bound. Not the Superman of today who travels from galaxy to galaxy. This is the time zone into which Superman was born. Relive it!!! Don't miss it!! Buy this treasure of American Mythology today!!

In the beginning..........2007-04-10

Holy cow, these 10-minute animated shorts are awesome! The funnest part in watching them is to see Superman, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and the whole gang in their originality. The stories are basic but smart, quick-paced, exciting, and heroic. Yeah, the soundtracks are a bit over-the top at times, but that was the music style of adventure movies in the 1940s. I love the spirited characterizations and some of the stories like with the volcano, the runaway train robbery, etc.

I also noticed how the recent Donner and Singer films have borrowed from these. Especially in "Superman Returns", his flying style of dropping out of the sky feet-first was originally done in these animations -- COOL! A must for Superman fans.
