Joshua Logan's 1967 film of the hit Broadway musical about the love triangle between King Arthur (Richard Harris), Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero) is strong on star emphasis and weak on such fundamentals as story and sets. Except for a handful of solidly dramatic scenes--such as Guenevere grieving, late in the film, for the ruination she and Lancelot have caused--there's not a lot to get excited about. (The story's theme of a lost, great society, however, certainly struck a chord in the 1960s.) The Lerner-Loewe songs ("If Ever I Would Leave You," "Camelot") pretty much sell themselves, even if they are, at best, only proficiently performed in this movie. --Tom Keogh

MISSING LINES.......2007-07-24
ALTHOUGH I LOVE THIS MOVIE, I WAS VERY IRRITATED AT THE BEGINNING BECAUSE THE DIALOGUE WAS MISSING...ONLY THE MUSIC WAS THERE. I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG THIS WENT ON. I PUT IN THE VIDEO INSTEAD.
Abysmal production of a great musical.......2007-05-25
Vanessa Redgrave can't sing - perhaps the song should be "The Simple Joys of Silence" instead of "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood".
Franco Nero leaves you cold.
Richard Harris, however, is the one, bright, shining moment in this Camelot. The Broadway Version which he did in '82 is head and shoulders above this.
Best King Arthur story going.......2007-03-12
Great acting, wonderful vocals, outstanding cinematography for its time. I loved it as a kid and I love it now too. It seems a bit long by today's standards, but mainly because people are now used to bam-bam-bam action. This is a classy classic with eternal themes.
The Arthur Legend.......2007-01-19
'Camelot' provides a romaticized version of the Arthurian Legend, with the emphasis on the relation between Arthur and Guinevere, while the controversy between Celt and Saxon is not mentioned.
Fantastic performances of both Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave, with excellent 'lasting' music like 'How to handle a woman'. For the 'afficionado' of the Arthurian legend a 'must-have'.
Great gift.......2007-01-19
My parents asked for this DVD for Christmas and I gave it to them. They love this movie and have enjoyed it for years now. They were very happy to have received it and have watched it several times. My sister borrowed it from them and is now watching too!

A live-on-stage performance filmed for HBO in 1982, Camelot returns Richard Harris to the role he immortalized on film in 1967. Harris replaced the original King Arthur, Richard Burton, in this revival production as it was on its way to New York's Winter Garden Theatre, which turned out to be Harris' only role on the Broadway stage. Fifteen years later, he's an older and wiser Arthur, a little more world-weary but still with a twinkle in his eye. He's paired with Meg Bussert, whose Guinevere is not as beautiful as Vanessa Redgrave in the film, but a better singer and appropriately younger. Bussert, who was Tony-nominated for her role in Brigadoon the year before, sounds eerily like original Broadway star Julie Andrews at times. Richard Muenz (The Most Happy Fella revival) plays Lancelot, Barrie Ingham plays Pellinore, and Richard Backus is Mordred. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's score is still a great classic, and here two songs cut from the movie are restored, "Before I Gaze at You Again" and "The Seven Deadly Virtues," but inexplicably cut is "Then You May Take Me to the Fair." Not surprisingly the production has a more stagebound feel compared to the sumptuous feature film, but it's good to have a more faithful version of the show available on DVD. --David Horiuchi
Description
Experience Camelot's "one brief, shining moment" as Lerner and Loewe envisioned itlive on a Broadway stage. Working at the top of his talent, Richard Harris heads an all-star cast in one of Broadway's wittiest, most literate musicals, filled with memorable tunes. Recorded at New York's historic Winter Garden Theatre in 1982, this production captures all the immediacy and intimacy of a live performance viewed from the best seat in the house.
Idealistic King Arthur longs to create a perfectly principled kingdom, but sees his dream undone by a tragic love triangle involving Queen Guenevere (Meg Bussert) and his best friend Lancelot (Richard Muenz). In this thoroughly engaging Tony®-nominated production, the medieval monarch's visiona place where "violence is not strength, and compassion is not weakness"speaks to our time and for all time.
Recommended for family viewing by the National Education Association
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE original Broadway PLAYBILL® (DVD-ROM) and bios of Lerner & Loewe and Richard Harris.
Customer Reviews:
just for broadway buffs.......2007-08-22
Beautiful close-ups which allow you to appreciate the fine performances of the whole cast. Richard Harris is remarkable.Lighting is warm as on the stage. However the grainy picture throughout diminishes the pleasure of watching, and the result is that you can love it only if you are a Broadway fan. Also complain the lack of subtitles. Might it have been edited better? After all it's one of the most important musicals and it deserved better care.
Wonderful DVD - Terrible Service.......2007-07-29
First, the product: The 1982 Broadway Camelot is far superior to the movie version. Where the movie seems dull and flat, this stage performance is captivating. Richard Harris appears to have a lot of fun after doing this part for so many years, and Meg Bussert is wonderful as the sweetly manipulative Guinevere. If you are trying to decide between this and the movie version, just stop and buy this one.
Second, the service. I wish Amazon would allow ratings on service. If they did, I'd give them a half-star on this order. When this DVD was announced early this year, I put in my order. In early May - when it was supposed to ship - I received an email that it would be delayed until mid-July. Even though the web site claimed it was in stock, I was patient. However, in mid-July I received yet ANOTHER email that it would now be September before I received my order. Amazon's site STILL claimed it was in stock. So, in frustration, I cancelled my Amazon order and found another online service to buy it from. I received it within the week.
I don't know what game Amazon was playing - since you can't talk to anyone very easily. Still, I now have this wonderful DVD. I strongly urge you to get it - I just hope you have better luck than I do in getting it.
Wonderful Broadway on TV.......2007-07-23
I originally saw this on HBO. Loved it and was so happy to find it on DVD. If you love Richard Harris you will love this. He is fantastic.
much better than the current roadshow.......2007-07-15
The DVD of Richard HArris in Camelot is truly a delight to watch and to recall since I saw that particular production live. The current production touring with Michael York comes up completely pale and unterinteresting since York only speaks his way through the songs while Richard Harris puts his whole heart and soul into the production. Save yourself money and buy this DVD so you will always be able to witness this magnificent performance. The only negative thing about the DVD is that it plays very dark.
The best ever Camelot.......2007-06-27
I have been waiting for YEARS for this version to become available. As far as I am concerned, it is the ONLY version of Camelot! The absolute best!

Following their animated/live action hit Space Jam, Warner Bros. jumped into the fully animated feature competition by playing it safe, giving the Arthurian legend a conspicuously Disneyesque facelift. Ingredients from Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas are evident in the tale of a girl named Kayley (Jessalyn Gilsig) whose father, a Knight of the Round Table, is killed by Sir Ruber (Gary Oldman), a maniacal brute who steals Excalibur and threatens to seize King Arthur's Camelot. Kayley enlists the blind, reclusive knight-aspirant Garrett (Cary Elwes) to brave the Enchanted Forest and retrieve the magic sword, and their adventure is (of course) fraught with danger. Adding extra punch to the movie's commercial appeal, the soundtrack songs are performed by big names like LeeAnn Rimes and Celine Dion. And if that's not enough to hold a kid's attention, there's a two-headed dragon ("we're the reason cousins shouldn't marry") voiced by Eric Idle and Don Rickles. With so much talent involved, it's entertaining but uninspired, although cleverly harmless riffs from Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver, and other movies spice up the adventure with enjoyable pop-culture references. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A magical feature-length animated adventure brimming with laughter and song! A heroic young girl, a handsome blind hermit and a comical two-headed dragon join forces to recover King Arthur's magical sword Excalibur after it is stolen by an evil enemy.
Customer Reviews:
Great movie for kids,.......2007-02-13
I bought this for my grandchildren and they love it. They watch it all of the time.
"We are the reason why cousins should never marry.".......2006-09-24
Plot in a nutshell - Baron Ruber (voice of Gary Oldman) wants all the power & wealth in the land, is thus expelled from the Round Table for it, and vows revenge on King Arthur (voice of Bond star Pierce Brosnan) and all who inhabit his realm. Years later, Ruber steals the sword Excalibur and plunges Camelot into chaos. The only hope is Kayley (voice of Jessalyn Gilsig), the plucky, super cute farm girl tomboy teen-aged daughter of a Round Table knight Ruber killed years ago, who manages to rope a blind forester/former stable boy named Garrett (voice of Cary Elwes) and a two-headed dinosaur/dragon mutant (voiced by Don Rickles and Eric Idle) into helping her retrieve Excalibur. Comedy, chaos and mayhem ensues.
Maybe not the best animated feature ever made, but still enjoyable in its old fashioned Disney kind of way. Combination of traditional hand-drawn animation set against CGI backgrounds makes for a beautifully uneven visual feast. Characters are fairly likable and good-natured enough not to annoy anyone.
Based on the book "The King's Dam0sel" by the late Vera Chapman.
Sophisticated production with a Gigantic Heart........2006-05-13
It might be easy for the rushed and hurried to quickly label this gentle animation as just another passable direct-to-video disneylike flick, but hold on, this isn?t one of them. This is a generous, colorful, thoughtful sophisticated movie, which achieved even more than it was intended. Particularly in one scene, which elevates this movie to the epic level.
Kayley, is chased by bad guys, and instead of your typical Indiana Jones like, brass and drums chase scene orchestral score..you are unexpectedly treated with an lovely, gentle, vaguely eerie song, (The Prayer) providing a big contrast with the intense and aggressive horse chase. (and its NOT in slow motion) "I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go...". Instantly you?re really worried with the mother, and those mildy cartoony villains become a real textured menace. They really made this work, and this movie is applause worthy for this scene alone.
Romantic Adventure.......2006-03-21
Quest for Camelot is my favorite movie. I love how a blind man can be so efficient and how a young girl can see him beyond his abilities.
Great Childrens Entertainment.........2006-02-22
I ordered the Quest for Camelot dvd for the wonderful Steve Perry video that was included on the disc. Having never watched the movie before I was pleasantly surprised. My 10 year old loves the movie and she loves the games that are included on the disc.

The Kennedy Mystique: Creating Camelot examines the skill with which John F. Kennedy used the media to create and sustain an image of glamour. Under Kennedy, not only was there an official White House photographer (Cecil Stoughton), but Kennedy had his own personal photographer (Jacques Lowe) who captured most of the intimate photos that have defined Kennedy in retrospect. In interviews, Stoughton and journalists of the time like Ben Bradlee discuss how Kennedy deflected attention away from his health and womanizing, focusing the public on a young, vital president and his warm, loving family. As television began to take hold of the country, becoming its dominant medium, Kennedy's photogenic looks became a powerful political tool. The Kennedy Mystique: Creating Camelot doesn't push its analysis too deeply, but it does describe the beginning of an era in which image has become as important to politics as substance. --Bret Fetzer

Nice National Geographic Special on JFK.......2006-01-14
First shown in 2003, this National Geographic special focused on how the press corps dealt with JFK's presidency and, with Stockard Channing's able narration, makes for some entertaining viewing. Ben Bradlee, White House photographer Cecil Stoughton (whom I have corresponded with) and Jacques Lowe set the scene very well. Worth having for those who want to revisit "Camelot."

Customer Reviews:
More legend than history..........2001-11-24
A good introduction to Arthurian legend. I was hoping the video would spend more time on the historical and archaeological data that supports (or doesn't support) the arguments about whether or not Arthur really existed. The video spent more time tracking the development of the legend in literature. Enjoyable all the same.
Great for Classrooms!.......2000-10-23
I have used this movie before in my English II class as we are reading Morte de Arthur. It really helps the students develop a sense of how Camelot's legend came about and how much of it could be true. Every year, someone asks, "Is this a folk tale, truth or non-fiction?" Now I pop in the tape and let them make up their own minds.

What those Kennedy women endured.......2007-07-30
Covering much of the same territory as other biopics on the Kennedys, THE WOMEN OF CAMELOT goes more in depth on the three,Jackie,Ethel and Joan who were married to Jack,Bobby and Teddy respectively.Though this 3 hour series hits all of the well known "hot spots" that occurred during the years 1953-1979, what this series does best is to keep the focus squarely on the women and their dealings with each other, their trusts and mistrusts with the Kennedy clan and their needs ,wants and desires that individually fueled them while being married to the most powerful family in America. The casting is outstanding. All three actresses have done a marvelous job at capturing the ladies language, look and movement. This film breezes through material quickly, but not in a way that characters are left undeveloped. History is not sacrificed and neither is character enrichment.Well done and worth the bargain price you pay.
The Women Of Camelot.......2007-01-03
This story stays pretty close to the book, which was great. You read alot about the husbands, it's interesting to see the women's side of things. I loved it.
Women of Camelot AKA Jackie, Ethel, Joan - 3 Hour DVD !.......2005-04-21
A most fascinating look a the Kennedy empire from the wives point of view. Based on the book by J. Randy Taraborrelli Jackie, Ethel, Joan - Involving extensive research, including interviews with those closest to the Kennedy family, oral histories from the JFK libraries and revealing personal letters and tapes. The DVD is 3 hours in length. Stereo surround and picture quality are excellent. Cinematagrophy is completely mesmerizing, with every scene similar to a historic color photograph. From the viewers point of view, the film creates a secret glimpse into the three women's lives. Outstandingly cast.

Hard to find a good "NORWAY" tour on DVD.......2006-12-12
I am a Norwegian living in the US. I bought this DVD to show it to visitors and friends here in the Memphis area. I was very disappointed after watching it the first time. The Norwegian classical music is great, but the quality of the filming is not very impressive. It is not even "half way done" I think. You are much better off buying a book with nice pictures and actual text in it since there is no commentary on this DVD.
Excellent.......2005-02-11
This is a beautiful, artist video. Watching it is like walking thru a museum of wonderful photographs. I'm going to Europe this summer and Norway will be my first stop.
Damaged - no stars.......2005-02-09
I was so disappointed to receive this DVD. First it took 5 attempts to get my player to "read" it. Then when it finely did play, pixils were visable, the music was skipping and a full 2 minutes into it, it stopped dead. I never heard any narration - maybe there isn't supposed to be, which my husband and I thought strange for a travel DVD. He also thought what we did see didn't amount to much. There isn't much up to date tourist information about Norway out there. And apparently there still isn't !
I was very disappointed with this DVD.......2005-02-04
The DVD looked as though the person filming was an amateur. The camera angles were odd and the places of interest were questionable. I am planning a trip to Norway this spring and was hoping to gain some insight into a few destinations with this DVD but it didn't focus on any points of interest. The music was pretty but this is not a DVD I would recommend if you want to see Norway!
