Fun 80s movie.......2007-09-18
I've always wanted to get this movie, and I'm quite happy to finally be able to get this quality DVD release. The movie... really not a "great" movie to be honest, but it is cool that such a "little" movie got made. Somewhat dated and naive compared to recent fare, but From Beyond is smart and knowingly cheesy, creative and fun, and is certainly more interesting than the vast majority of 80s mainstream horror movies. From Beyond basically uses the same formula of Re-Animator was somewhat less success. This movie is a fun way to annoy those who are less openminded, they will absolutely HATE it! Others will enjoy.
A Great Sci-Fi Horror Film to Watch with Friends!.......2007-09-17
I first saw this on cable TV years ago with friends. We howled with laughter at its campiness-- and that was coming in on the last hour. I eventually saw the full film and fell in love with both its strangeness and subversiveness. It is an absurd tale of excess gone awry that is completely relevant to the human condition.
I greatly enjoyed watching the extended-cut DVD with friends. The added footage gave it extra punch from the toned-down version that I had seen on cable. And, it is a film that allows for comments or gasps to be exchanged during it without losing the thread of events. It's a fun horror film. There is lots of latex and some funny commentaries on s/m. It may not be for the faint of heart, but I would not call it particularly grizzly either. Enjoy!
Also, the extras are great. The interviews with the director are charming. And the section where you can see the story board images alongside the filmed sequences is ultra-cool. The director seems quite proud of his ability to draw detailed story board images and for good reason. Definitely check out the extras, even if you do not normally do so. You won't be disappointed!
Excellent DVD transfer!.......2007-09-15
Holy cow, this is one awesome release. I agree wholeheartedly with the other 5 star reviewers that this is an excellent movie, and thank the studio for it's release. The DVD transfer looks extremely clean and sharp. A+ on the video and sound. I don't see how it could get any better for DVD.
Finally on DVD!! One of Stuart Gordon's Best!.......2007-09-15
Having just got my DVD copy of From Beyond on Thursday, I'm very happy to finally have this on DVD. Now I can get rid of my old worn out videotape copy.
Finally, the film has been released uncut, with Stuart Gordon commentary with Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton-Yay!!.
The a couple of featurettes with Gordon, a interview with composer Richard Band, and a storyboard to film comparison.
This is a must for any Gordon fan, and horror fans.
( Plus if your a fan of Stuart Gordon, on the Return of The Living Dead: Collectors Edition, there is a featurette called The Decade of Darkness, with is about some 80's horror movies. It has Stuart Gordon, Joe Dante, John Landis, Dee Wallace, Tom Holland, Catherine Hicks etc).
I definitely recommend this interesting and at times strange film, but very enjoyable.
Finally.......2007-09-12
After years of waiting, Stuart Gordon's From Beyond is finally out on DVD, and be thankful that it is. Undoubtedly one of Gordon's (Re-Animator) best films and one of the best H.P. Lovecraft adaptations ever filmed, From Beyond revolves around survivor Crawford (the great Jeffrey Combs) of an experiment gone hideously awry. A psychiatrist (Barbara Crampton) however wants to continue the experiment, and returns to the house where everything went wrong, along with Crawford and a cop named Bubba (Dawn of the Dead's Ken Foree). Naturally, things don't go very well, but in Gordon's hands, the otherwise predictable story and events are frequently gross, and frequently entertaining. There's plenty of gorey, slimy moments to be had, as From Beyond is finally restored in all it's uncut glory after years of only being able to see it as a butchered, MPAA approved version that floated around on VHS. The DVD itself has some great special features as well, including an insightful commentary from Gordon, and a couple featurettes as well which detail the making of the film as well as it's re-editing for DVD. All in all, it's so great to finally have From Beyond in all it's uncut glory on DVD; and it's needless to say that if you're a real horror fan, this DVD belongs on your shelf.

Owing a major debt to Alien and its cinematic spawn, Pitch Black is a guilty pleasure that surpasses expectations. As he did with The Arrival, director David Twohy revitalizes a derivative story, allowing you to forgive its flaws and submit to its visceral thrills. Under casual scrutiny, the plot's logic crumbles like a stale cookie, but it's definitely fun while it lasts.
A spaceship crashes on a desert planet scorched under three suns. The mostly doomed survivors include a resourceful captain (Radha Mitchell), a drug-addled cop (Cole Hauser), and a deadly prisoner (Vin Diesel) who quickly escapes. These clashing personalities discover that the planet is plunging into the darkness of an extended eclipse, and it's populated by hordes of ravenous, razor-fanged beasties that only come out at night. The body count rises, and Pitch Black settles into familiar sci-fi territory.
What sets the movie apart is Twohy's developing visual style, suggesting that this veteran of B-movie schlock may advance to the big leagues. Like the makers of The Blair Witch Project, Twohy understands the frightening power of suggestion; his hungry monsters are better heard than seen (although once seen, they're chillingly effective), and Pitch Black gets full value from moments of genuine panic. Best of all, Twohy's got a well-matched cast, with Mitchell (so memorable with Ally Sheedy in High Art) and Diesel (Pvt. Caparzo from Saving Private Ryan) being the standouts. The latter makes the most of his muscle-man role, and his character's development is one more reason this movie works better than it should. --Jeff Shannon

ANOTHER REASON TO BE SCARED OF THE DARK!!!.......2007-09-04
man this movie was hard core, since the first time i watched it, and even now after many many times of seeing it. it's still a good one for me. man especially since vin diesel was up in there. my hero. movie does him justice. he's great, his acting, and his skills. let the world know who he was. he's been unstoppable since. another one of my favorites is cole hauser. i give him props. this was a thrill ride. you never know what's in the dark. there's always a scare of the unknown. don't venture in the dark alone. "i'm not the one you gotta worry about", nicely spoken. riddicks not the bad guy here, he's going to turn out to be the hero, the leader, their hope. good movie, if you haven't seen it you definitly should.
amazing movie.......2007-07-25
pitch black makes you love the bad guy and want the "good guys" to die. not many movies can do that. pure badassery...
Excellent Movie.......2007-07-07
However, not widely viewed prior to the release of Chronicles of Riddick. This is a sci-fi thriller! People marooned on a desert planet with a surprise when the sun goes down ("Pitch-Black). Riddick as always is a tough guy whose character you will like and want to see him in more movies. The choice of characters was very good. You develop distinct feelings towards each one and the writers did not let those emotions go to waste. Excellent cinematography. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting for the boogey men!
Director's log.......2007-05-02
(Pitch Black) is an unrated movie about transporting forty passengers and one Furian murderer. The ship gets caught in a meteor shower, kills the captain. The ship crashes on a baren desert planet. Soon the as lights go off, the only one they can trust is the murderer, because he's the only one who can see in the dark so I hope you're not afraid of the dark.
Great movie even better on HD-DVD.......2007-03-24
The extras are sparse, but the transfer really shows how much better HD-DVD looks over DVD. I have both and side to side you can see the lifelike coloring of the flashlights in the dark, details are clear. The movie is one of my wife's favorites and one of Diesels best.

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

ALIEN VS. AMERICAN SCIENTISTS.......2007-09-14
I have watched this movie numerous of times and I find that I love it more each time. Yesterday I let my eleven year old son watch it. When I told him what year that it came out he said, "Ahhh, come on, I hate it when you make me watch those old, stupid movies!" Within ten minutes he was engrossed. When the movie was over he told me that The Thing is now his favorite horror movie and that he was going to have nightmares. My point is that The Thing is such an incredible movie that every person, no matter what generation, is going to love it.
THE THINGS ARE AMONG US!!.......2007-09-01
they sure didn't give this movie the credit it deserved. i'm telling you john carpenter did it again. man, this movie was extra good. the actors did a phenomenal job, the whole idea was brilliant, and the setting...what better place. who's who. the aliens really do exist among us, but as humans. this one was just plain evil. for it's time the effects were great, personally one of the best. total isolation, the thing, paranoia sets in, distrust, and nowhere to go. all you have is to fight back, whether you're the last man standing. the ending was good, he leaves it all up to you. if they don't kill each other the weather surely will. i do recommend this mind blowing classic.
Class from Carpenter.......2007-09-01
I saw this at the Cinema in 1982 and on occasions had to watch through my fingers!
This film and Aliens were the last two great Sci-fi/horror films that did not have digital special effects. The effects in this film are astounding. For the younger people reading this (those born after the late 60's) you have to realise that what you see on the screen was actually created in the studio and not on a computer. They still look good compared with todays CGI and remain the pinnacle of animatronic special effects. Full credit to Rob Bottin the special effects wizard on The Thing.
The film itself is a claustraphobic affair once The Thing is loose in the camp, and you continally have doubts about which character is still human. The suspense is helped immensely by a intense music soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, who had obviously listened to some of Carpenters own soundtrack music.
Kurt Russell in the leading role does a great job as MacReady, and the supporting cast which includes Keith David (Platoon, Pitch Black) and Richard Dysart all give good performances.
This film was a high point for John Carpenters career, since whilst he has made some good films since (They Live for example) most of them have been very poor in comparison compared with this film.
The DVD has digital 5.1 sound.
"I know I'm human and some of you are human or you'd all jump me right now" McReady(Kurt Russell).......2007-08-30
I saw this one when it came out and have this one on my top 10 list of favorite horror movie. While it is true the effects are stunning and have yet to be matched, it is with repeat viewing that the better parts of the movie rise to the top.
This is a more accurate telling of the short story classic"Who Goes There?" which was the used to make the original "Thing". In that one we had a monster from outer space that was described as a "Carrot", while here we go back to the idea that the alien can assume the shape of anything it touches. This is where the movie gets it's scariest scenes from, you never know who is on your side or who is an alien.
The cast is great and once again Kurt Russell shows that he is a very fine actor and carry's this film. This is one that stays with you long after the movie is over.
Grotesque, violent, and repulsive horror at its best........2007-08-25
Years ago I saw this movie on television and I did not understand why this movie was considered a horror classic. On television most everything exciting was edited out and the plot was butchered due to the tv editing.
So I eventually watched it on DVD after a friend suggested I watch it again. I was very impressed. The Thing is not only a grotesque and ultra violent movie, especially for 1982, but it has a steady build up of suspence and twists and turns within the plot. Now, just because I said the movie was super gross especially for 1982 doesn't mean that The Thing doesn't stand strong against modern horror films. In fact The Thing creature is the sickest and most freaky alien I've ever seen in a movie. It would be awesome to see a sequel by the title of Alien VS. The Thing. I wonder who would win and what sort of mutants would form out of their battles.
This movie is highly recommended if you like horror, sci-fi and gore.

Even when his trademark twist-ending formula wears worrisomely thin as it does in The Village, M. Night Shyamalan is a true showman who knows how to serve up a spookfest. He's derailed this time by a howler of a "surprise" lifted almost directly from "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," an episode of The Twilight Zone starring Cliff Robertson that originally aired in 1961. Even if you're unfamiliar with that Rod Serling scenario, you'll have a good chance of guessing the surprise, which ranks well below The Sixth Sense and Signs on Shyamalan's shock-o-meter. That leaves you to appreciate Shyamalan's proven strengths, including a sharp eye for fear-laden compositions, a general sense of unease, delicate handling of fine actors (alas, most of them wasted here, save for Bryce Dallas Howard in a promising debut), and the cautious concealment of his ruse, which in this case involves a 19th-century village that maintains an anxious truce with dreadful creatures that live in the forbidden woods nearby. Will any of this take anyone by genuine surprise? That seems unlikely, since Emperor Shyamalan has clearly lost his clothes in The Village, but it's nice to have him around to scare us, even if he doesn't always succeed. --Jeff Shannon
Description
M. Night Shyamalan (SIGNS, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE), the director who brought you the world's greatest thrillers on DVD, now creates his most thought-provoking triumph yet ... breaking international records and dazzling audiences around the globe! THE VILLAGE is a smart, edge-of-your-seat chiller crawling with terrifying surprises and frightening twists and turns. An isolated, tight-knit community lives in mortal fear of an oppressive evil inhabiting the forbidden forest just beyond their tiny village. So frightening that no one ventures into the woods ... until one villager dares to face the unknown. With unforgettable performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, and newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, this powerful motion picture is one of Hollywood's best psychological thrillers and ranks with the best of Hitchcock!
Customer Reviews:
Spooky fun.......2007-09-15
Life in the tiny 19th century village of Covington Woods is idyllic; the tiny community lives in harmony, completely isolated from the distant Towns that are feared and never visited. The only problem is the constant threat of the hideous, red monsters that lurk in the woods and send the villagers rushing to their cellars every so often. Ivy (Bryce Dallas Howard), the plucky, blind daughter of elder Walker (William Hurt), has fallen in love with strong and shy Luscious (Joaquin Phoenix), son of the widow Hunt (Sigourney Weaver). When Lucious' life is in danger, Ivy asks for permission to leave the village for the first time and seek medicine in the Towns.
I really enjoyed this movie. The actors are all excellent and the creepy mood is lightened by a bit of innocent romance. Some of the characters are written as stereotypes - Ivy is the world's bravest, wisest, and most saintly blind person - but others are more intriguing: Adrien Brody gives a touching performance as a mentally retarded young man who causes trouble, and Joaquin Phoenix is sweet as the gentle hero. You'll have no trouble figuring out the twist early on, but that's OK; it's still a fun flick with a stellar cast.
Blair witch meets Little red riding hood.......2007-09-05
A silly fear-fest that manages to be completely un-scary, the Village looks good but fails to deliver on its promising setup. Despite its attractive production values and cast, I just don't see how this film could work at any level. I will say that this film does end exactly as it should with the moral that lies lead only to darkness. Maybe instead of filming, Mnight should have just told the story around campfires to Girl-Scouts.
Not my favorite by director, but still worth 5 stars.......2007-09-04
After having seen "Unbreakable," "Sixth Sense," and "Lady of the Water," I've become a fan of this film's director. I made efforts to look up all of his works and watch them. Though this is my least favorite of them, his work so exceeds my thoughts on other movies that this is still a "5 star" movie for me. As always, this wasn't predictable, which is why I am such a fan. Indeed, it is slow-paced, but I enjoy the leisurely story-telling atmosphere he usually creates. There is one very minor logic issue that didn't ruin the movie for us, and I won't describe here in detail because it would be a spoiler for those who haven't watched yet and for those who aren't as nit-picky as we are. As is typical for his movies, the violence level is quite low and not graphic. Bryce Howard is an excellent actress. I look forward to seeing more from her!
Love this movie.......2007-08-30
I was seriously scared by this movie until about half way through. Then I could relax and wonder what the twist would be this time. And even though I figured it out, it was so well done that I wasn't disapointed.
Casting here is just great. All the characters are human, well-written and fit perfectly into the world created. And, like everyone else, I found Bryce Dallas Howard's Ivy charming.
With most of M. Night Shyamalan's movies, I enjoy them but don't feel the need to watch them over and over - once you see it and then watch again to pick up all the clues, that's pretty much it. But the characters of "The Village" are so engaging that this was one we actaully bought.
And what is the deal with "Lady in the Water" having a highter rating??
We can mover towards hope.......2007-08-30
Everyone lives a full life in a self-sufficient 1800's village. We live in a symbiosis with a mysterious species. However we also live free form the evils that permeate those other villages beyond the forbidden forest. So what happens when we violate the truce with the other species?
The film is produced by M. Night Shyamalan; so there is no surprise in the formula or big picture. It is not hard to figure out the premise shortly into the story. However there are several surprising twists on the way.
The acting was surprisingly exceptional. We have well known actors that have the ability not to let their personalities overwhelm their characters.
The sets and period costumes were superb. You can see that there was a lot of time and money that went into them. You have the feel that you are there.
Although this film may not have achieved the potential in many eyes it is probably one of the best balance and almost believable stories Shyamalan has shown us. It is more than just a tale as we se how people relate and can relate under stress and great joy.
The archetype for the movie could have been lifted right out of a Joseph Campbell's book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" (1949). The four stages making up the cycle of a monomyth are "passage: separation-initiation-return:"

A stroke of genius.......2007-09-11
Like the very smart people who made "The Blair Witch Project," the even smarter people at the HPLHS turned their handicap (no budget,) into a virtue. In this case, making a silent film in the classic style of 1920s cinema. It works brilliantly, due to the creativity and skill of everyone involved. This film is clearly a labor of love, as is evident by the care taken in the production. Amateur filmmakers everywhere, especially those interested in the horror genre, should take huge inspiration from this terrific work. Who needs color and sound?

If you don't know who H.P. Lovecraft is, you are a trodlodyte. If you know, but don't like him, you are a cretin. If you know and love him, owning this film is a spiritual imperative. Not since "Nosferatu" has there been a such a perfectly silent tribute to undying evil. The challenge of translating a work of pure words to a work of no words, and yet communicating the message perfectly is superhumanly met by the good folk who produced "Call". It is the equivalent of a poem about the Mona Lisa that forms her smile in your mind's eye, or a drawing of "Stairway to Heaven" that makes you rock out.
Get this film.
For all the world to see..........2007-08-14
I've given my review this title, for one single reason: this DVD is not Region 1, as stated with the product information, but has region code 0.
This means that there's no restriction as to where you can play the movie: I guess you could see it anywhere in the world... I live in Europe (Belgium, to be exact) and it works on my crude DVD-player and TV-set as if they made it to measure (which I'm sure they didn't).
So don't hesitate to buy the disc because of the region coding.
That being said, the film is BRILLIANT and does a great job, and justice to the story.
The other fine points of this picture have already been statde by the other reviewers, so I'll leave it at that.
A Cyclopean chunk of sheer horror!.......2007-07-21
I was very pleasantly surprised with this movie. I knew it was independant and I knew it was LOW budget. There are plenty of other reviews that tell you the highlights of the movie, so I just want to say that if you're on this page and thinking about buying Call of Cthulhu... go ahead and do it!
Have You Answered The call?.......2007-07-14
I'm glad this film was made, and made the way it was. The Lovecraft Preservation Society really put forth an effort to make a faithful Lovecraft film, which as we all know, never really happens. The decision to do this in the old silent film style is a nice choice and fitting to the story. You can tell that the film was made recently because of the quality(and clarity) of the film used, regardless of attempts to show aging. There's just no substitiute for aged film like real aged film, but who wants to have this film sit around and corrode for 70 years before releasing it? That's not a complaint by any means. Everything else-the lighting, the camerawork, the acting-is dead on, just fabulous. You know that Hollywood would never get within five hundred miles of a project like this(unless it was a two and a half hour cgi packed action extravaganza directed by Michael Bay and starring Vin Diesel), but the recent Grindhouse has taught us that when someone tries to do a film in the style or genre of a bygone era, no one understands it, thinks it's dumb, and it flops. Fortunately Cthulhu is a much more hush hush production made on a shoestring and won't have to worry about box office bombing. It was made for fans by fans(I mean, who the hell's really gonna watch this other than Lovecraft fans?), and it's nice to know that things like this still happen in the film world. If you like the Lovecraft story or are a Lovecraft fan, this film should be a no brainer for you. We all know that Lovecraft translates differently from reader to reader, so folks may not consider this a perfect adaptation. But it is very accurate and very well done. A labor of love to be sure.

WTF!!!.......2007-09-08
This is a 1982 movie but it looks so clean and clear like it was made yesterday! I highly recomend this movie! Great story, nice effects for '82 The sound and picture will blow you away I'm glad I bought this movie! This was my first time ever watching it!
Great HD transfer of a great Carpenter movie.......2007-07-09
I already that the original on DVD, but didn't like how it upconverted, so I splurged on the HD version. Well worth it.
A Decent 80s Thriller.......2007-05-14
For what it is and for its age, this movie is pretty good. Plenty of surprises, outstanding pyrotechnics, big bangs! If you're a horror fan this one is worth a look.
There's a lot of latex rubber for the creature effects - not CGI - so if you're turned off by that, at least you're aware of it. It's not difficult to tell where the special effects are, yet they did a really good job considering the technology of the time.
The HD transfer's video is of high-quality, and the DD+ 5.1 soundtrack exceeded my expectations!
A great cast projects their desperate situation in a believable manner (yet the Doc's ability to come up with diagnoses so quickly is a little hard to believe - then again it's a movie and who has the time to wait for lab results)...anyway, "The Thing" definitely has it moments!
the thing.......2007-05-13
We got the order in a timely manner. It was exactly how it was described, however we ordered the wrong one as we have no hd player. Thank You
An atmospheric thriller.......2007-04-28
"The Thing" has a wonderful atmosphere right from the beginning, when the director establishes the vast isolation of Antarctica with some stunning shots. From there, he draws closer and closer in, with some actual horror mixed with well-done suspense. An added bonus: the glimpse at the technology of yesteryear, especially the computers and boomboxes. All the actors are well-chosen and create defineable characters and the fate of each comes as something of a shock. Carpenter even preserves the original opening of the movie he's remaking. Unfortunately, lately, I have to say he's rather lost his touch.

Gremlins is a whee of a film (if you don't mind the occasional gross-out) from producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante. Zach Galligan is the young man whose inventor father (Hoyt Axton) gives him an odd Christmas present: a tiny, furry creature that comes with a set of rules: don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and keep him away from direct sunlight. But Galligan breaks the first rule and the damp little critter pops out a dozen little offspring. Then the offspring break the second rule and, overnight, turn from cute furry guys to malevolent scaly guys with world domination on their mind. The only way to stop them: rule three. But it's an anxious (and extremely funny) battle to make it to daylight--and the bad gremlins find ways to multiply over and over. Great special effects and a gruesome sense of humor make this a wild (if occasionally dark and scary) ride. --Marshall Fine
Description
A man buys a Mogwai as a Christmas present for his son. The young boy is told to keep the pet away from water, out of the light and never to feed it after midnight. Inadvertently, the creature is dampened and almost instantly, produces half a dozen furry replicas of itself --which continue to multiply and turn the small town upside-down.

Gizmo .......2007-09-16
I remember seeing this movie when I was little, and Gizmo was all I really remembered of it, I'm glad. This movie is actually really poorly written, but the gremlins are just so cute you forget. Watch out though, I bought this for my daughter and there is a scene in it where the kids are talking about why they don't believe in Santa. My daughter is 4 she didn't really catch it, but any older and you could have a discussion you don't want to have on your hands.
Gizmo is the cutest ever...........2007-09-14
This movie lures you in with cuteness, which just makes the later scenes even more scary and menacing...not TOO scary of course, but enough to make the movie fun. I love this movie almost as much as my "Bathroom Buddy."
Fun for the whole family.......2007-08-23
I bought this mainly for my daughter who is 6. She loved it. She, her Daddy and I sat and watched it together. Her Daddy and I hadn't seen it in years and she thought it was the funniest movie. She laughed so hard from beginning to end! The ending did make her cry a little, but after talking to her she was fine. Her Daddy and I both told her how we cried at that part too when we first saw it.......Yeah, she laughed at that!
I love this movie....we all do!
Those little creatures.......2007-05-21
Gremlins was part of a tradition of 80s horror movies that dealt with a campy action and some strange creature coming into people's otherwise ordinary lives and causing destruction. Steven Speilburg in his early career seemed to favor mainstream comic movies that had a slightly silly premise mixed in with action and some horror aspects, but kept it light and airy enough to appeal to children as well as adults. This was one of them, in keeping with his success from E.T.
Billy Peltzer is given an early Christmas gift from his father, who bought a curious creature called a mogwai from an ancient Chinese man's cherio shop. He is named Gizmo, and aside from being adorable and so cute you want to squeeze him all the time, there are some special rules for handling him. No bright lights, especially sunlight as it will kill him. Never get him wet, and never feed him after midnight. Naturally, these rules are going to be broken and disaster is going to strike.
When Billy accidentally gets him wet, five new mogwai are among them. Their antics are crafier, fouler, and sneekier than anything Gizmo attempted, as he is sweeter and good natured while these are the mean ones that sabatoge machines like they are famous for. Trouble is predicted ... And eventually they get Billy to feed them after midnight. Could it be more cheesy that he's watching Attack of the Pod People From Mars when he nods off to sleep, then wakes up the next day to find that the five are in cocoons? That night, they hatch, turn into horrible mosters, and wreck the town.
When they turn into the horrible green monsters, the movie takes another turn. They become ridiculous as well as destructive, turning it from a horror story into a somewhat silly chain of events. There is plenty of gross out as well, especially the Stripe's melting in the sunlight climax. It was a good time, a silly horror fantasy movie. And even after all these years, Gizmo is still so cute I want to squeeze him. :)
great balls of fire.......2007-05-19
For thoose of that grew up watching the criitters and ghoulies, and alien quadrioloies you will enjoy this 1984 classic movie of comedy, action, horror, and mild romance thrown in it. When billy peltzer breaks two of three world with his new pet a mowgi named Gizmo bought by his dad during a trip to china town. The town is over run with millions of gremlins running around killing people and causing millions of dollars in property damage. This movie was big hit even though it went dratically over budget cost about 11 million dollars to produce with all the puppetts, electronic, and occasional kyroptratics. Can billy make thing right before the town and all the people that occupy it are literally destroyed. If you like this see the sequel gremlins II there is also rumors go around on you tube and other websites that a gremlins three might be in production for release on dvd sometime later this years if there are now delays, cancellations or complications if it turns out to be true I will inform you when I find out the more precise release date.

the giant waste of time.......2007-09-10
What a disappointment! I had not seen this since the late 60's, when I was just a boy. The name of Willis O'Brien lured me, but the very ordinary commentary tells us that Obie had very little to do with the production. Incidentally, the two doing the commentary seem to know less about the movie than I do! Try as I might, I can't recommend this to any monster movie enthusiast.
It's just plain ol' fun.......2007-09-02
This is a type of movie that you would watch when nothing is on the Tube and you want to relax and enjoy yourself with a nice cold beer and a pizza. It is a fabulous experience to watch these movies and imagine what it must have been like to be in a drive-in seeing these movies for the first time on a friday night.
It take a unique individual with a love for the classics B Moster movies to enjoy these classics. I would recommend this, it rates up there with The Thing with James Arness or Them. Enjoy!
Lotsa fun, lotsa redundancy. . . .......2007-07-22
THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (great title, but "Behemoth" is a synonym for "Giant", so it's the Giant Giant!) is finally available on DVD, in a very clean letterboxed transfer with good, sharp sound. And, the Ferry Sequence is included! Pete Peterson and Willis O'Brien's Beast looks pretty darn good, considering that this is from 1959, with a fairly small budget. The London sequences are the best, with the animation fluid and the set-pieces consistently interesting. The Ferry Sequence works nicely, but, of course you can't make water bigger or smaller, so the model looks, well, pretty much like a model. Hey, what the heck, it's fun! Enjoy! I did!
And, as a bonus, the DVD also includes the original trailer and bemused commentary from effects pros Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett. They're a hoot!
So, pull up a mini-sub, make yourself comfortable, and have a ball with the GIANT GIANT. . .er, the BEHEMOTH BEHEMOTH. . .well, the big ol' prehistoric radioactive city-stompin' whatever it is!
The Giant Behemoth - DVD edition.......2007-07-20
Good news movie fans, the newly released DVD edition of "The Giant Behemoth" has the ferry scene in it! This scene was missing from the VHS copy, which many of the reviews here are talking about. So for all of you out there (like me) who have been waiting for a better copy of this movie, go for the DVD version!
Fed up waiting.......2007-07-19
I'd love to write a review, but as of 19 July, it hasn't arrived. Perhaps others should be aware of the inordinate time it seems to take to get stuff to the U.K.

Description
A volcanic eruption in the North Atlantic brings to the surface a 65-foot prehistoric monster. Two treasure divers capture the creature and take him to London where he is put on display in a circus. A scientist is thoughtful enough to point out that the sailors' bonanza is only an infant, and that a full-grown specimen would be over 200 feet in height. Sure enough, Gorgo's mama comes thundering ashore, reclaims her offspring and heads back to sea but not before she trashes a generous portion of London. The special effects in GORGO, provided by Tom Howard two-time Academy Award winner, are truly admirable. The monster is quite ferocious except when he wiggles his ears. Released by MGM in 1961. A Giant Monster Favorite.......2007-08-25
I always had a yen to see this film ever since the title monster appeared on the cover of an early issue of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine. I finally caught up with it much later in life and found it to be great fun. While I always prefered the stop-motion effects work in films like THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (also directed by GORGO's Eugene Lourie) I was never completely put out by a well done man-in-suit effect as we have here. The film plays out as a grand fable and clearly has a little bit of "dream logic" to it. The "Destruction Edition" DVD is a fine rendering of the film with strong color and decent clarity (I doubt if the film will ever look razor-sharp on disc). The extras are meager but palatable.
Horrible Audio.......2007-07-04
They absolutely butchered the audio on this release. The sound would echo from the front to the rear speakers which was very annoying. It was almost unwatchable. This DVD might wind up in the trash.
not anamorphic widescreen!!.......2007-06-17
I bought this on dvd upon it's original release (which left much to be desired but was better than VHS), so I was thrilled to see that it was to be re-released toting that it was widescreen. I bought it hoping that it was anamorphic, but for some reason...it's not. In this day and age where many older and oscure titles now get the red carpet treatment I am sad that this film did not. This was always my favorite non-Godzilla kaiju film and I always hear positive things about it. I'm sure in a couple of years, we'll get the ultramilked, super duper version that will hopefully get better treatment than this release.
The Irish Godzilla.......2007-05-25
First - the DVD. VCI has done an excellent job in cleaning up the print. It's by far the clearest, cleanest one I've seen. And widescreen! (I also think they've fiddled some parts of the sound, too - you'll hear what I mean.) Nice extras, too - including a "making of".
Ah, well, yes, London stands in for Tokyo, but young Gorgo hails from the Emerald Isle, or more specifically, "Nara Island", first cousin of "Oto Island". The islanders are indeed a surly lot of Gaelic-speaking, sweater wearing, Sasanach-hating fishermen. No women to be seen on the island, which probably accounts for their foul tempers. In fact, there's no woman in a lead or supporting role here, either. Strange - even eye-patch wearing Dr. Serizawa had a girlfriend...... But I digress.
Where "Godzilla" was a horrifying response to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, "Gorgo"'s moral center is a warning about avarice and disregard for nature. Young Sean's prescience is consistently disregarded by everyone else, much to their regret. The MST3K guys had a go at this one, but I think they should have saved the "treatment" for more deserving flicks. The blue-screen work here is better than Hitchcock's in "The Birds", and the miniature work is really outstanding. Sure, it's a "guy in a rubber suit" flick, but certainly light years ahead of REAL junk like "Sting of Death" or "Octaman". Russian-born director Eugène Lourié had quite an interesting career, including the outrageous anti-marijuana exploitation flick "She Shoulda Said No", and two earlier "giant lizard" movies: "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" and "The Giant Behemoth".
Minor trivia: greedy salvage captain William Sylvester later appeared in Kubrick's "2001" as terminally bored space traveller Dr. Heywood R. Floyd.
All-in-all, a very welcome cleanup and release, and for this reviewer, fond memories of a Saturday matinee. Recommended to all.
Where "Widescreen" = "Letterbox"; Come On Guys.......2007-05-18
Can't really add to any other comments about this film. It's great fun and very enjoyable.
However the "Widescreen Destruction Edition" is actually a LETTERBOX edition.
OK, it is widescreen, but it's not anamorphic widescreen. Just a little annoying.
Extras; Making Of featureete, photo gallery, Bios, Gorgo trailer & others. And a wonderful animated menu.
And the film runs 74 minute, not 86. Maybe they counted the delightful "Making Of" featurette thats' also included.
The film includes the manatory shot of little girl fleeing monster who drops her dolly which is then trampled by crowd.

LOVE these Vincent Price Movies!.......2007-08-10
This is perhaps one of the silliest of the thriller movies that Vincent Price made. My all time favorite (and it truly scared the bejeebees out of me) was "House of Wax." Anyhoo, the gimmickry and pure schlock of these productions made going to the movies so much fun. You never lost sleep from nightmares either. I'm happy to see them on Turner Classic Movies and released on DVD. Vincent Price plays a doctor and this isn't a Doc you want taking care of you. Vincent Price wants to prove his "Medical Theories" by trying them out on innocent people. Not exactly the nice doctor around the corner. The theory is silly of course because this ain't real science. However, If you're not sure, just make sure you SCREAM while you're watching it. Then The TINGLER won't get you too!! Great fun to have a bunch of these old black and white movies, a bowl of popcorn, and a rainy day.
As a Kid This is the ONLY Horror Movie That Ever Truly Scared Me Totally.......2007-07-28
I was a kid around 8 to 10 years old when I first watched this movie. I had seen House on Haunted Hill the old Vinent Price Version and Tingler not too long after. Now being autistic and disabled I had lots of hospital visits growing up so medicine, doctors and the mysteries of the body was never far from my mind.
Seeing and hearing about the Tingler made my little kid skin crawl. Add that to the human skeleton coming out of that water in House on Haunted Hill and this dude was set! My grandmother left a closet door open that had dry cleaning on it and in the bright moonlight night the plastic reflected the moonlight. From my vantage point it was just enough to put me in mind of the bones and tingler dude had a Nightmare so bad my parents insisted I stay home from school that next day.
Oh I look at Tingler now and laugh a little but, there is always that place inside me where the Tingler made its mark. I have watched thousands of horror movies since first seeing the Tingler and I laugh at most of them no matter how gore filled they are. What made Tingler so good was not the monster. Tingler has a strong psychological horror story sub-plot attached to it. Tingler made me think about the nature of fear and its effects on the body. Another thing that just creeps me out is that Tingler has strong Film Noir elements that just makes even its most outragous moments feel just a bit too real.
Vincemt Price was at the top of his form in Tingler. For an old Movie Tingler still has its bite. This film would have just been another bad B horror movie had it not been for the serially creepy intonations and hard psychotically mad doctor ghoulish features of one Vincent Price.
Scary childhood memories.......2007-07-07
The Tingler was the first "Scary" movie I ever saw! I was very young(11 or 12) when I saw it. I couldn't sleep at all that night! Although it is obviously an older movie, I still love it. Vincent Price was, as always great! I think most anyone in the "Baby Boomer" age would enjoy it. My grown kids even like it! Maybe I'll try it out on my grandkids!
Hokey and schlocky, "The Tingler" delivers!.......2007-02-07
At the writing of this review there were 38 other synopses of this film, "The Tingler". With that in mind, I won't waste the reader's time with another boring plot summary. Instead, let me just say that if the reader of this review is a fan of Vincent Price and especially, Director William Castle, then you will want to go get the "40th Anniversary" copy of this film. The extras, especially the short film on Castle, his films, and the promotional gimmicks that he used to sell them is great. But, back to this film....
"The Tingler" is one of those great old black and white films from the '50s that many Baby Boomers grew up with. Price is terrific as always and is surrounded with a solid cast of method actors. As mentioned by other reviewers, the "Tingler-animal"(?) is certainly hokey (and has it's exposed wires for propulsion in plain view), but that's ok. Castle's gimmick with "The Tingler" is called "Percepto" and unfortunately, viewers of the film won't get the effect that moviegoers got unless they want to hook themselves up to a battery or two. In theaters, "Percepto" was actually the act of hooking up movie seats with old motors that gave the viewer a small charge or vibration everytime someone screamed on the big screen.
The film does have a few actual thrills and chills throughout the movie. In particular, the "blood scene" used to scare one of the actors to death giving Price his chance to discover The Tingler is particularly memorable because the blood is colorized for the scene in brilliant scarlet.
RECOMMENDED FOR VINCENT PRICE AND WILLIAM CASTLE FANS, IN PARTICULAR!
Tingle away.......2006-08-20
William Castle was the king of gimmick horror, juicing up his sometimes-great-sometimes-really-hokey horror flicks with everything flying skeletons to two-tone glasses.
For "The Tingler," it was a buzzer in the seat called Percepto, which would be a shock to anyone watching the movie. The movie itself was a rather uneven but original idea, with Vincent Price playing a borderline doctor who discovers the very roots of human fear. It's entertaining, but has some big flaws.
Dr. Warren Chapin (Price) is performing autopsies at a local prison, where each dead man died in the electric chair -- and something crushed their spines. To further his research, he frightens his nasty wife and X-rays her, and finds something that appears when afraid, and vanishes when the victim screams. He tries taking acid to frighten himself, but the experiment fails.
Then the deaf-mute wife of an acquaintance is frightened to death by some ghastly visions, and Chapin extracts an enormous, centipede-like worm from her spine -- the "Tingler." After Chapin's wife almost kills him with it, he decides that some borders should never be crossed. But before he can return the Tingler to its dead host, it escapes.
All B-movie goodness, complete with a rubber worm and deliciously vitriolic dialogue. While the idea of a spinal parasite fed by fear is a really hokey idea, Castle plays it so straight that the audience doesn't really have an opening for scoffing. Like a good fantasy story, it creates its own reality.
Castle was at his best when he was doing nasty dialogue, and he's in good form here ("There's a word for you." "There's several for you!"). He builds up a sense of rising tension throughout the straightforward plot, which is only broken when the movie ends. And despite tubs of blood and giant worms, Castle also shows his talent for the understatedly creepy when Chapin takes acid.
In fact, "The Tingler" would be a great B-movie if it weren't for two very hokey scenes. One is of a black screen, with Price's voice exhorting, "The Tingler is in the theatre! Scream for your lives!" Very awkward. The other is the final scene, which makes absolutely no sense, and has nothing to do with what comes before it. I guess Castle just needed a shock ending.
It must have been nice for Price to play a non-villain for once -- his Chapin is obsessed and a little twisted, but he isn't insane or nasty, and by the last act he's realized that science isn't the end-all. Patricia Cutts and Philip Coolidge give good performances too, as David's toxic wife and as a sweaty theatre manager who isn't as timid as he seems to be.
"The Tingler" is a fairly entertaining cult horror movie, with good acting and a big rubber worm. If only it weren't for those two scenes.
